I stood with Sam for a few minutes longer watching the scene begin to get quieter, now that the ambulance had gone and forensics were almost done, there wasn't much happening and it wasn't long before Jerry, Tracey and Oliver all came back over to where we stood.
Jerry was the first to speak, "Sammy, you good to take Andy back to the station?" He asked patting Sam on the shoulder as they reached us.
It took Sam a minute to respond as he was still watching me for any signs of distress from this now unfolding case.
"Uh yeah, I can do that if you don't need me for anything else?" He asked as he placed a comforting arm around my waist and I leaned into him slightly.
"You're all good brother, but if you don't want to go yet I can take McNally back to the station with me?" Oliver offered knowing that his offer would most likely be in vain but that it was also worth a shot.
"Actually Oliver, could you? I uh, wouldn't mind staying back as long as your good with that Babe?" Sam asked now pausing to look at me.
It took me a moment to respond because he never calls me anything but McNally at work, I'm ALWAYS McNally to him, His McNally Yes but it's always McNally Never Andy and ESPECIALLY not Babe!
I knew right in that moment that Sam was struggling to be strong and this was his way of trying to get himself back together.
I squeezed the arm that was around me and finally after what felt like hours found my voice.
"Yeah, that's fine Sam, I'll see you back at the barn!" I said leaning up to kiss his cheek again something that we never did at work but I also knew that he would need it if he was staying here.
It would be harder for him to be back at the station unable to work the case with being in a relationship with me and I knew that Jerry would let him stay despite this and I also knew that I would be of no help here so at least if I went back to the barn I could start on my paperwork while I waited for Sam.
Kissing me back gently Sam forced a smile in my direction before turning to Oliver and saying "Oliver, thanks brother! I owe you one! Please look after my girl and I'll be back soon!" He said as he moved to pat Oliver on the shoulder as he now guided me past him and towards the cruiser that we had come in that morning.
Oliver tried his best to cheer me up a bit by telling me all about his oldest daughter Izzy and her new boyfriend Jake,
"Honestly McNally, the kid is such an ass kisser and Zoe is falling for it, like he is such a great kid, a great guy for our daughter I just, I can't cut the kid any slack just yet. She might be almost 15 but it's just way too soon to be thinking that her dating is a good thing!" He said chuckling to himself.
I smiled and said as cheerily as I could although I knew he wasn't buying it
"Maybe Sam should come by and have a "Chat" to him? Think that would scare him off? Get him to dress up like he used to undercover and see how the kid reacts to that?" I asked suddenly feeling more into the conversation.
Grinning even more as Oliver broke into a deep belly laugh only reserved for when he was being 'Ollie' not Oliver.
It always warmed my heart being one of the few that saw him like this, the Dad, the Best Friend instead of the Cop.
"YES!" He said nodding his head and pointing one hand at me as we stopped at the lights
"We definitely need to do that; I reckon the kid will run a mile when he sees Sam AND we need to make sure he asks him about Drugs and Alcohol and all that classic Sam-Undercover act he can do!" Oliver said still chuckling as we moved through the street with the flow of traffic.
The playful banter continued all the way back to the station.
I loved how carefree Oliver could be.
By the time we got back to the barn we had come up with a plan to try and scare Izzy's boyfriend away and had made plans to do said activity next weekend at the Shaw's with Jerry, Tracie, and Leo as well.
Ollie was going to put on the BBQ and all Sam and I had to do was show up.
As we reached the barn I gave Oliver the thumbs up and headed to the changing rooms, I knew by the time I got changed that Sam would be back at we could go home there was no way I wanted to be anywhere else tonight, snuggled up with my man was all I wanted.
As I dressed I couldn't help but think back to how things were when Sam was making plans for us and our baby.
"You Know I think you should move in here before the baby is born, I mean you're here ALL the time, AND I have a spare room we can make into a nursery!" Sam said out of the blue one night as I was getting out of the shower and paused to look at my growing stomach, it was slightly prominent and I smiled as I rested my hand on it closing my eyes and taking a deep breath my smile growing as I felt a second hand on top of mine, Sam had joined me by the mirror.
"So, what do you think?" He asked as he hugged me and pulled me closer resting his head lightly on my shoulder.
Nodding I allowed him to take some of my weight as I rested back against him looking in the mirror.
"Sounds perfect, I have a scan next week and it's the 12 week one so we can let the rookies know after that!" I said gently now meeting Sam's eyes. Nodding he gently turned me around to face him.
"We can tell them when you are ready Andy, we don't have to say anything until then!" Sam reminded me gently taking my face in his hands and kissing me gently.
I nodded "We still have to tell my Dad and Sarah yet so I guess we should do that first." I said again resting my hands on my stomach as Sam now lead me to our bed.
"There is no rush Andy, honestly we could keep it a secret until you start showing, we can do whatever you want!" He muttered as he now began placing kisses all over my body as he began removing my clothes now as I lay on the bed completely content.
A while later as I snuggled into Sam's embrace even further and began drifting off to sleep I lay there smiling thinking about what my father's reaction to being a grandfather would be not to mention Sarah.
These thoughts filled me with excitement and helped carry me off to sleep.
The next few days passed quietly, work was average, never a dull day of course but nothing overly stressful, Sam was home every night and had the weekend off which was great because of the Shaw's BBQ plans.
It was the Friday before that Oliver and I clued Sam in to the idea we had come up with on our way back from the bank robbery and how he needed to help Oliver scare this kid off his daughter! Naturally Sam was all over it.
"So, you want me to dress up like a punk and offer the kid some drugs or something and if that doesn't work then what? Jump him? Rough him up a bit?" Sam asked now trying to hide his laughter as he looked at Oliver seriously.
"Anything Sammy, honestly this kid is brown nosing me and I'm getting irritated by this perfect boy image he is trying to put on for Zoe and Izzy, he has them eating out of his hand brother and I don't, I don't like it!" Oliver said shaking his head as he took a sip of his coffee
"And who better than the big bad Sam Swarek to play the protective Uncle and give this kid the once over!" Jerry said now stepping up behind Sam and slapping him hard on the back.
"Yeah and if that doesn't work we could always take him for a ride in your cruiser Oliver, who knows the last time that was cleaned!" I said gently passing Sam some tissues to clean up his coffee that he had spilt when Jerry came up behind him.
"Uh, let's try the scary Uncle Sam's a druggie path first because even I don't want to go near your cruiser Oliver!" I said grinning and winking at Sam.
"Yeah careful there Andy, you might not be a rookie anymore but I can still get sarge to assign you to cleaning the squads for a month!" He said gently patting me on the shoulder.
The whole affair at the Shaw's went well, Sam showed up looking as rough as possible, hair gel, greasy drugged up look and while it did freak the heck out of Izzy's younger sister's and Zoe but not our intended victim.
This kid laughed it off and didn't even blink an eye when Sam turned around and asked him if he wanted to buy a bag of weed. He politely declined and asked Oliver if he should call 911 and report Sam for trying to sell to a minor!
As Sam and I left the Shaw's a couple of hours later Oliver sighed. "Maybe this kid is better than I thought, I still don't think he is right for Izzy but now I guess only time can tell." Ollie said quietly patting Sam on the back as we reached the truck. Sam had left, changed, and come back a little while later fresh and looking like himself, the kid-Jamie just laughed his head off and thanked Sam for letting him 'see the real Uncle Sammy' because Izzy always talked about her cool Uncle Sammy and how he was the King of undercover. I sighed turning to hug Oliver before I got into the truck.
"Despite what happened tonight with the unsuccessful attempt at scaring Jamie off I had a great time so thank you Oliver, for a great night and please thank Zoe for me too it was great seeing her and the girls next time you guys should come to dinner at our place!" I said as I slid into the car and grabbed my seat belt as Sam shook hands with Oliver before climbing into the truck and starting the engine.
We drove back to Sam's and went straight to bed; it had been a long night but a great night. I knew Sam and I both needed this after everything that had happened over the past few months I knew that it did us good Oliver and Zoe included.
