1 EXT. GREENWICH PALACE - DAY
[Track 1: Fun and Games] A long aerial view of Greenwich Palace in all its Tudor glory - a vast building surrounded by acres of sprawling greenland. The sun is setting in the distance, casting an orange glow over the property.
2 EXT. COURTYARD - DAY
A large open air square, walled in on all sides by the grand brick buildings of the Tudor palace. The ground is paved with stone, and the courtyard is lined all around by potted olive trees.
A few people, probably Tudor staff, are wandering through the courtyard, but we focus in particular on Maria, a young attendant wearing a modest blue dress. She has dark skin - she is of Ethiopian-Iberian heritage - and quite plainly beautiful features. She hurries into the courtyard carrying a pile of folded bedsheets and looking quite anxious (a facial expression that, as we will come to see, tends to be the default for her).
From the opposite direction comes John, another black steward with a marginally more fancy outfit - a doublet of earthy green and skintight black tights. He is not walking with the same purposefulness as Maria, and once he spots her, his face perks up. When he speaks, his accent is difficult to pin down - elements of Spanish, Ethiopian, and Cockney English all jumbled together to create an accent suggestive of a well travelled man.

JOHN
Hey, Maria!

Maria looks up from her laundry and smiles when she sees John - there is a look of attraction between them, and a flirty atmosphere. Her accent is definitely much more Spanish than his, and she speaks with a generally shy disposition.

MARIA
Oh! Sorry, I didn't see you.

JOHN
No wonder, with all those bedsheets in front of your face!

MARIA
They're for her majesty.

JOHN
And there was me thinking the horses were getting real pampered.

He gives her a cheeky grin, and she smiles back.

MARIA
What've you been up to today?

JOHN
Well, I've just been with Dominick and the others. Discussing our plans for next week.

MARIA
Wow, such an exciting discussion!

JOHN
Hey, I have a major role in the ceremony, it has to be done right.

MARIA
A major role? I thought you just blow a trumpet, how hard can it be?

JOHN
Hey, how dare you! There's an art to the trumpet, I'll have you know. And how about you? You're coming with us to Westminster?

MARIA
Yes, her majesty has asked me to accompany her.

JOHN
Brilliant. Hey, you think we've got it bad - imagine all the planning they must be doing. Like spending a day in bedlam, eh?

MARIA
I wouldn't know.

JOHN
Hey, you're closer to Lady Catherine. You have a better picture than me.

MARIA
Listen, I just do what I'm told. Some of us take our jobs seriously.

JOHN
Oh, you should never do that.

MARIA
You should if you want to keep it!

JOHN
They'd never get rid of me. Best black trumpeter in England, that's what his Highness said to me.

MARIA
Yeah, you keep saying.

Suddenly, a large pale-skinned maid pops her head out of one of the doors and calls out to Maria.

JULIETTA
Maria! There you are. Come on, we've not got all day.

MARIA
Coming!

She glances at John.

MARIA
Meanwhile, some of us actually have to put the effort in.

JOHN
Ah! I weep for you.

MARIA
I'll see you! Don't go getting yourself into trouble.

JOHN
Me? Never.

He watches her walk away, into the building following Julietta, and laughs a little to himself, stood by himself in the now otherwise empty courtyard. But he is distracted by a sudden noise from behind him; his smile drops and he turns to face the direction of the sound. [Track 1 ends] Behind him is a door to a wine cellar which has been left ajar, just enough to let a sliver of blinding light out. Befuddled by what could be the source of this phenomenally bright light, John inches cautiously towards the cellar door. Once he arrives at the door, he reaches his hand slowly towards the handle and then, suddenly, wrenches the door open, flooding his face with light. And though we can't see what it is he is looking at, we can see his reaction: a face of pure terror. He lets out a bloodcurdling scream.

3 INT. TARDIS ARCHIVES
[Track 2: Old Fashioned Hero] The Doctor and Clara walk into a vast hall, something like a library. Floor-to-ceiling shelves line all the walls, with freestanding bookcases and filing cabinets creating a maze of pathways as far as the eye can see. If one were to look up, they would see walkways connecting upper levels, but would struggle to see anything resembling a ceiling - the room seems to stretch on forever. The room is lit by sconces along the bookcases, and the hall is bathed in a kaleidoscope of colours by a large stained glass window on one wall (although it is unclear where the light behind the window is coming from exactly).

DOCTOR
The TARDIS Archives!

CLARA
Woah! What is all this stuff?

DOCTOR
Historical records. Newspapers, manuscripts, tapestries. In Aisle G, a signed copy of the Domesday Book.

CLARA
Hang on. The TARDIS is supposed to be some supercomputer time machine thing-

DOCTOR
Vast understatement, but go on.

CLARA
Why do you need paper records? Surely the TARDIS has computer databanks.

DOCTOR
Yes, well, she does. But it's nice to have physical copies of things. Call me old fashioned.

CLARA
Ah, I get it. You're a hoarder.

DOCTOR
No! No. I'm not a hoarder!

CLARA
Right, and it's just coincidence that you need a home with infinite space.

DOCTOR
Yes! Besides, look.

He runs to the nearest filing cabinet and pulls one of the drawers out. It seems to extend much further than it logically should - almost as if it's bigger on the inside.

DOCTOR
I only keep records of big historical events.

CLARA
What counts as a big historical event?

DOCTOR
Well, you know.

She files through the contents of the drawer.

CLARA
June 28th 1914, assassination of Archduke Ferdinand...October 16th 1962, beginning of the Cuban missile crisis...January 12th 1999...what's significant about this date?

DOCTOR
Nothing. But my horoscope in that newspaper was spot on. Neptune did actually align with my path. It was...an eventful day.

He turns and spreads his arms, gesturing to the vast Archives.

DOCTOR
The Battle of Hastings! The Russian Revolution! The Wall Street Crash! Think of a significant event in history - it's right here in the TARDIS Archives to read all about. But you know what's better than reading about history?

CLARA
What?

DOCTOR
Living it. So! Pick a date! Any date!

CLARA
What, anything?

DOCTOR
All the major tipping points of time, the great men and women who changed history irrevocably. They're all alive right now outside the TARDIS doors, so pick a paper, and let's go meet them.

Clara looks around excitedly, like a child in a sweet shop. She starts to walk past the aisles, then points down one of them. It has a sign that reads "NO ENTRY".

CLARA
What's down there?

DOCTOR
The Daily Mail...let's leave that aisle, actually.

CLARA
Yeah.

He quickly steers her away, while Clara nods in understanding.
4 EXT. PALACE OF WESTMINSTER - EVENING
The TARDIS materialises, and the Doctor and Clara step out. Clara has dressed for the occasion, with a long Tudor ballgown. Behind them is the River Thames, and in front, looming over them, are the gates to the Palace of Westminster, offset by the orange and purple glow of the sunset.

CLARA
Oh yeah, that's the ticket.

DOCTOR
The Palace of Westminster, London. It's the 23rd of June, 1509. 6:43pm.

CLARA
Who are you, the speaking clock?

DOCTOR
Owner of a time machine.

CLARA
So, in a way...

The gates open slightly and two guards walk out sharply, brandishing pikes.

DOCTOR
Ah, good evening! You know, as far as welcomes go, I've had better. Though I must admit I've had worse.

GUARD
Who are you, and what is your business here?

The Doctor brandishes the psychic paper.

DOCTOR
We were invited! The honourable Doctor and Lady Oswald, visiting from the realm of Blackpool. Our presence was requested at the palace the day before the coronation.

One guard takes the psychic paper and reads it, then shows it to the other guard. They nod, and hand it back to the Doctor.

DOCTOR
Now. If you wouldn't mind...take us to see Henry the Eighth.

He grins. [Track 2 ends]

5 INT. CORRIDOR - EVENING
The two guards lead the Doctor and Clara down a corridor - at the end, in the distance, are a big set of double doors. The doors are flanked by two more guards.

CLARA
I've never been inside the Palace of Westminster. To think this becomes the Houses of Parliament one day!

DOCTOR
Two days ago, Henry Tudor and his new wife Catherine of Aragon rode from their residence, the Palace of Greenwich, to the Tower of London. From there, they made their way here, to the Palace of Westminster - that was about, oh, two hours ago. Tomorrow morning, they'll make a procession to Westminster Abbey for the official ceremony, where Henry will be crowned King. The day after, one of the guests writes a lovely manuscript recounting the coronation-

He pulls a tattered manuscript, handwritten and covered in drawings of Tudor roses, from his inside jacket pocket, and discreetly shows it to Clara.

DOCTOR
-which will, after a few hundred years' time, end up in the TARDIS archives for you to find half an hour ago.

CLARA
Thanks, BBC Bitesize. Brain slightly hurting now. Are history lessons always so… timey wimey?

DOCTOR
Hopefully, if I'm involved.

CLARA
How exactly did you get that manuscript?

DOCTOR
I have a wealth of sources. As well as a lifetime ban from the British Library.

The two guards knock on the doors. From behind the door, we hear:

HENRY (oc)
Enter!

The double doors open fully, and the guard gestures for the Doctor and Clara to walk in.

6 INT. THRONE ROOM - EVENING
[Track 3: Signora Rosanna Calvierri 0:00 - 2:26] The Doctor and Clara step into a long drawing room, befitting of a soon-to-be-king. The walls are covered in resplendent tapestries of red and gold, as well as grand Renaissance-style portraits in ornate frames: those with a keen eye would be lucky to recognise paintings of Henry VII, and one of his wife Elizabeth. One wall is made up almost entirely of windows, which allow an evening glow inside. The room itself is largely devoid of furnishings, save for a large intricately designed rug that draws the eye from the double doors at one end of the room, the threshold of which the two time travellers are still standing, all the way to a table with two thrones at the other end - one larger and one slightly smaller.
On the smaller throne sits Catherine of Aragon - a young woman of Spanish descent, in her early twenties. She is dressed regally and holds herself formally. Maria is stood beside her, her hands folded in front of her modestly.
Next to Catherine sits Henry VIII - a fairly masculine looking young man, barely an adult, and yet already full of pomposity and turkey legs, with a mop of ginger hair peeking out from beneath his regal headwear (not a crown - he's not king yet). He's muscular and physically fit, although it is clear that he has a lavish diet, not yet fat but the propensity to become that way should he continue to eat. He stares at the Doctor and Clara with a look of confusion and righteousness that reminds them who is in charge at all times.

CLARA
Woah.

The Doctor bows.

DOCTOR
Clara, might I introduce his royal highness Henry Tudor and her royal highness Catherine of Aragon.

CLARA
Nice to meet you, your highness-es.

She curtsies.

HENRY
Hello there. And who exactly are you? What are you doing here?

DOCTOR
Sorry, your Highness. We are the Doctor and Lady Oswald, come down for the coronation. You invited us to stay here for the night. Don't you remember?

HENRY
I did what?! Don't be so absurd!

DOCTOR
No, no, look, we have written invitation, signed by you.

He presents his psychic paper. A footman takes it from him and hands it to Henry, who looks at it perturbed. Catherine peers over his shoulder. When she speaks, she has a thick Spanish accent.

CATHERINE
That is your hand, my love.

HENRY
Yes, thank you, darling (!)

DOCTOR
Of course! With everything going on, it must have slipped your mind. Absolutely understandable, must be a hectic time for you. No offence taken, right Clara?

CLARA
Yes, quite right.

HENRY
Hmm. Yes, yes. Must have…yes, well. Let it never be said that I'm not a man of my word.

CATHERINE
You are most welcome here.

She looks to the footman.

CATHERINE
Is there a guest room prepared for the Doctor and Lady Oswald?

FOOTMAN
Uh...I shall endeavour to find out, your highness.

HENRY
Yes, well, see to it! Chop chop!

CLARA
Oh. Foreshadowing.

The Doctor nudges Clara.

HENRY
My apologies, for this lapse in my memory, but like you say, it's a busy time for us here. Please, make yourself at home.

DOCTOR
You're very kind. So! The big day tomorrow. You all geared up for it? Got the confetti ready?

HENRY
Everything is in place for my ascension to the throne. Tomorrow, I shall be crowned King, and omnipotent ruler over all of England, as is God's will. The most powerful man to walk the earth.

DOCTOR
But at least you've still got your humility, eh?

HENRY
This will be a truly grand occasion - one to showcase my awesome might.

CLARA
Blimey, if that ego gets any bigger, you're gonna have to give it its own throne.

CATHERINE
The King will not be mocked!

CLARA (sotto)
Not king yet.

DOCTOR
Sorry, your majesty. It's been a long journey. We don't want to cause a fuss. We'll stop talking now. Ex-communication! Eh? Funny?

HENRY
You'll do well to hold your tongues. You are in the presence of your future king. My role and power has been ordained by God himself. I mean - just last week, I received a sign from the heavens. And all those who saw it too take it as absolute proof of my divine right.

DOCTOR
A sign? How so?

HENRY
A ball of light from the heavens, near St James Park. Unfathomably bright, and falling to Earth like a shooting star. A sure sign that God has descended from high, and now walks the earth through me.

DOCTOR
Lights in the sky...odd. When did you say this was? A week ago?

HENRY
About then, yes. And quite a sight it was too. Now! Like you say, you have journeyed long today, and tomorrow is of course a momentous occasion. Please rest, weary travellers, and I shall see you tomorrow for the ceremony.

DOCTOR
Yes. Yes! Rest. Good.

Catherine gestures towards Maria, who steps forwards and nods.

CATHERINE
My lady-in-waiting Maria will conduct you to your room.

DOCTOR
Thank you, your highness. What's the wifi password?

CLARA
Come on, Doctor.

She grabs him and pulls him towards Maria.

MARIA
Follow me, please, your Lordship. Your Ladyship.

She gestures for them to follow her. They do, with the Doctor throwing a final peace sign as they leave. Henry sits back in his chair, slightly disgruntled.

7 INT. BEDROOM - EVENING
This is a fairly basic version of a palatial bedroom - a four poster bed, but a relatively small one; well-oiled wood-panelling on all of the walls, but with no wall decorations. The only source of light is a candelabra next to the bed, and the moonlight through a window. Clara walks into the room and sits on the edge of the bed. The Doctor follows her.

CLARA
Blimey, I thought it was all of Henry VIII that was big. Not just his head. This is a rubbish trip so far!

DOCTOR
Well, don't blame the taxi driver. You chose the destination.

CLARA
Yeah, because I thought the Tudors were cool! I didn't realise he'd have such an ego.

DOCTOR
Clara, he's an English monarch.

CLARA
Point taken.

DOCTOR
More to the point, he's an English monarch seeing lights in the sky...

CLARA
What are you thinking?

DOCTOR
My alien senses are tingling.

CLARA
Ugh! Today on "things to not say out loud"...

DOCTOR
I mean, come on. Lights in the sky. That is textbook alien.

CLARA
To be fair, it is also textbook religious experience. One step up from burning bush.

DOCTOR
Yes, and our royal friend would seem to agree. Best keep our eyes peeled anyway, just to be on the safe side. Tomorrow's an important day in history, and it would be a bit inconvenient if aliens were to show up and ruin it all.

CLARA
Just a bit.

DOCTOR
Let's keep our guard up. One wrong move, and it's lights out for the Tudor Dynasty.

Clara nods solemnly, then blows out the candles on the candelabra, plunging the room into blackness. [Track 3 ends]

8 INT. CORRIDOR - NIGHT
Clara walks down the corridor. Coming the other way is Maria.

MARIA
Are you alright, miss? It's very early.

CLARA
Oh! Hey, it was...Maria, right?

MARIA
That's right, miss. Did you have a good sleep?

CLARA
Yeah, I was just looking for the ladies room. Was hoping this place might have, y'know, plumbing. Probably wishful thinking. Thanks though. Are you okay?

MARIA
Oh, me? Uh. Yes. Sorry, no one really ever asks after me, miss.

CLARA
Oh! Well, they should. And you can call me Clara. I love your accent, by the way! Where's it from, if you don't mind me asking?

MARIA
Spanish, miss. I'm from the Emirate of Granada.

CLARA
Ah, that's nice! I went to Spain once. Two weeks in Tenerife. I went to all the landmarks - the bar, the pool, the sun loungers. So how long have you been in England?

MARIA
Seven years. I'm part of Lady Catherine's entourage, so I came over with her for her first marriage.

CLARA
And what do you think of England? Bit different from Spain, I can imagine.

MARIA
It's...different, yes. I think we're lucky to have Lady Catherine looking out for us. She keeps us fed and dressed, and made sure we learned good English when we came over. It's funny, because where I come from in Spain - it's called the Nasrid Kingdom - there's so many different people, and it doesn't matter what you look like. And then you come over here, and everyone has fair skin and if you're a Moor, well, you stand out. And people look at you a bit different. But Lady Catherine, well, she doesn't stand for that. She stands up for me, and all of the Moorish attendants. And well, she's going to be the queen soon, so people listen to her!

CLARA
That's nice. Always good to have someone fighting your corner. How many people did she bring with her in her entourage?

[Track 4: England Reborn]

MARIA
Oh, a lot. I couldn't count. Some white, some Moorish. Muslims, Jews. There's Catalina, Ana...John...

She smiles coyly.

CLARA
Oh yeah. I recognise that smile - the first-crush smile.

MARIA
I'm sorry?

CLARA
Trust me, I'm a teacher. I see that smile all the time on my teenage students. For them, it's usually followed by petty arguments and passive-aggressive tweets, but that's beside the point. Who's John?

Clara smiles cheekily at her, and Maria reciprocates.

MARIA
He's, uh...he's one of the royal musicians.

CLARA
Oh, he's in a band. Classic! What is it, a tribute act? Guns N War-of-the-Roses?

MARIA
He's one of the trumpeters who performs for His Majesty.

CLARA
Ugh, I take it all back. Is there any instrument less cool than the trumpet? What's he like?

MARIA
I dunno. He's just...nice. Like I say, round here there's not many Moors. So having someone who's from the same place as me - who grew up with the same things I did, speaks the same language - it's really nice. Just to be able to connect over that culture. And the same sense of humour! Like, he makes me laugh all the time. Every time I see him, he'll make some joke or do something funny, and even if I'm really busy, or stressed out, just in those few moments that I see him, I just feel better. It's nice to have someone like that. Someone that makes your job just a little bit easier.

CLARA
Yeah...yeah it is. Look at us, gossiping over a boy. So, is he here? Did he come to Westminster with you?

MARIA
I thought so, but... It's kinda odd, because when I saw him last week, he said he was making arrangements for the coronation, obviously. But then he didn't ride with us from Greenwich. I thought he might have come ahead of us, or maybe he was coming after, but I haven't seen him at all.

CLARA
He's gone missing?

MARIA
Yeah. Like, all of the trumpeters - there were four of them - they just haven't shown up. And like I say, I thought they might be following after, but I asked around, and no one knows where they went. The stewards have been panicking trying to find them but there's no trace. Someone was saying that they've probably all just run off to somewhere else, but there's me thinking- I mean, I know we weren't anything more than colleagues really, but I'd like to think he wouldn't have just run off without saying goodbye to me or at least telling me what he was doing. But, well, there we are. Maybe I was just misreading things.

CLARA
Hmm. And when did you say this happened?

MARIA
Like I said, probably about a week ago.

[Track 4 ends]

CLARA
Around the same time that those lights were in the sky...do you think they might
be connected?

MARIA
How do you mean?

[Track 5: Enemy Eyes Are Watching] But before she can answer, a noise and a bright light from the other end of the corridor break up their conversation. The two of them look up, and see a solemn hooded figure at the end of the hall, bathed in a bright white light. The details of the figure are hard to make out, but it stares at them, and tilts its head ominously. Maria gasps in shock.

MARIA
What on earth?!

CLARA
Get behind me.

MARIA
Is it an angel?

CLARA
That'd be nice, wouldn't it? You. Who are you and what are you doing here?

The figure continues to silently stare at them. Then, slowly, as the light begins to die down, it turns to its right and walks off through a doorway.

CLARA
Where's it going?

MARIA
It's headed towards his Majesty's bedchambers!

CLARA
I'm going to go after it. Go and find the Doctor! Tell him to come quickly!

MARIA
You're going after it? Why?

Clara is already pursuing it.

CLARA
Call it divine intervention!

She dives right.

9 INT. HENRY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Henry and Catherine are asleep in a grand four-poster bed, in the middle of an opulent wood-panelled bedroom. The bed is covered with luxurious bed-dressings, and expensive furnishings hang on the walls. Suddenly, their peaceful sleep is interrupted as the door swings open with a loud bang, as the ghostly hooded figure saunters in. Henry and Catherine awake with a start, and Henry sits up in fright.

HENRY
I say! What are you playing at?

CATHERINE
What is that?!

The figure looks at him intently. Even at this close distance, it is difficult to make out any discernible features - it appears slightly translucent, like a ghost. The halo of light still surrounds it somewhat, though faded now. Henry steps out of the bed, ready for a scrap.

CATHERINE
Henry!

But the figure just stares at him. Henry stares back, bemused and somewhat awestruck.

HENRY
No, my love. I think it's okay. Who are you?

Beat.

HENRY
Is this the Lord's work? Have you come from the heavens? Come for me?

The figure slowly stretches out its arm towards Henry. He reciprocates, offering out his arm as if to touch it. Suddenly, Clara comes barrelling round the corner and into the bedroom.

CLARA
Your majesty! Keep back.

HENRY
You! What the devil are you doing in my bedchambers?

CLARA
Oh, never mind the creepy figure in front of me!

HENRY
It is an angel. A sign from the heavens.

CLARA
I wouldn't be so sure.

She runs around the figure, putting herself between it and Henry.

CLARA
I'll ask again, then. Who are you and what do you want?

HENRY
Foolish woman! Remove yourself at once!

CLARA
Look, just keep back for a moment.

She looks behind her at Henry.

CLARA
Bit further back than that!

HENRY
But-

CLARA
BACK!

Henry, in shock, finds himself moving back, pressing his back against the bedframe.

HENRY
How dare you use that tone with me? Impudent woman.

CLARA
Ooh, someone's got an axe to grind. Sorry, not trying to give you any ideas. Listen. Just talk to me. Tell me who you are, and what you want with this man.

The figure lowers its arm and hisses at Clara.

CLARA
Cat got your tongue? Gonna say not from Earth, from the way you just appeared. So what planet? Oh yeah, not the first alien I've met, don't worry. Bracelet on your arm, what is that? Teleporter?

The figure tilts its head once more, as if recognising that this is a more worthy opponent than it was expecting.

CLARA
And you're here for him, yeah? But what for? Murder? Abduction? Experimentation?

HENRY
Ascension!

CLARA
Not right now!

The Doctor suddenly runs into the room, followed by a worried Maria.

DOCTOR
It's okay, I'm here! Don't panic!

HENRY
Oh, brilliant! Come in, why don't you? In fact, let's invite the whole palace!

CLARA
Do I look panicked?

DOCTOR
Knew you'd have it under control really. Ooh, hello, now what are you?

The figure turns to look at the Doctor.

DOCTOR
You know, it's really quite rude to walk in on someone while they're sleeping.

CATHERINE
Says the strange man in my bedroom.

DOCTOR
Touche. Look, it's late, so just leave his majesty alone, eh?

But the figure walks suddenly towards the Doctor, both arms outstretched as if to attack him. In a panic, the Doctor takes a step back and holds up his sonic screwdriver.

DOCTOR
Okay then, if you won't listen to reason-

He presses his sonic. The figure suddenly erupts in another glow of light, causing everyone to shield their eyes. When they look back, the figure has disappeared. [Track 5 ends]

MARIA
What just-?

DOCTOR
Triggered the teleport recall circuit. Sent it back to the original source of the teleport, with a quick disable function.

CLARA
Control-undo.

DOCTOR
Temporary exile.

CLARA
Don't like the sound of temporary.

DOCTOR
Well, I disabled the teleport link, so they can't use that again. But that was a super-short-range teleport, so it's nearby. It's not gonna stop trying to get in.

[Track 6: More is Jailed]

CATHERINE
If you're quite finished! Kindly get out of my bedchambers!

DOCTOR
Right! Yes. Sorry, you two. We'll leave you to, uh, sleeping and- and- and...other things. Come on, Clara. And you.

He beckons for Clara and Maria to follow him out of the room, which they do. Catherine huffily rearranges the bedspread and rests her head down, but Henry does not join her in bed. Instead, he stays standing, bemused, as he stares after the Doctor and friends. Then, after a moment's pause, he follows them.

CATHERINE
Henry-?

She sighs.

10 INT. CORRIDOR - NIGHT
The Doctor, Clara, and Maria stand in the corridor. Maria still seems visibly quite shaken and anxious. When they speak, they keep their voices low, so as not to disturb the sleeping royals.

MARIA
But I don't understand. What was that thing?

DOCTOR
Well, exactly. Good question.

Beat.

MARIA
And what's the answer?

DOCTOR
Yes, quite. Not sure yet. Clara? You were on reconnaissance.

CLARA
Definitely not a function.

DOCTOR
It was more of a job title.

CLARA
And definitely don't work for you. I didn't get anything out of it, if you're wondering. It was more of the silent type. But it seemed surprised to see someone with superior intellect. And it was definitely after Henry. So it's done its research, whatever it is. Not here on a whim.

Suddenly Henry appears angrily, but in similar hushed tones.

HENRY
What are you talking about?

CLARA
The weather (!)

DOCTOR
We're discussing our next plan of action against that figure in your room just now. We need to work out where it's gone now.

HENRY
It came from Heaven. From the right hand side of God Himself!

DOCTOR
It's a valid theory.

The Doctor holds up his sonic screwdriver, which is pulsating.

HENRY
Would you doubt the presence of a Divine Being?!

DOCTOR
No, no! In fact I've met quite a few. But my screwdriver has just fixed onto the location that the teleport link sent it back to...and it's not coming from above. It's on land. About half a mile away. Whatever your angel is...it's still on Earth.

HENRY
God on Earth. Like the Bible foretold. "And I shall walk among you and be your God, and ye shall be my people."

DOCTOR
We'd better go check it out. Stay here, Henry. Big day today, huh?

He slaps Henry on the back, then walks off, followed by Clara and Maria. Henry looks out after them, slightly stunned.

CLARA
So what do we do?

DOCTOR
The source of the teleport is over in that direction.

He points northwards.

CLARA
And I suppose you want us to run towards it.

DOCTOR
I want answers, and that's our best chance of getting some.

He turns to Maria.

DOCTOR
You. Maid person.

MARIA
Maria.

DOCTOR
What's over that way? Half a mile-ish from here.

MARIA
That way? That would probably take you to St James Park.

CLARA
St James Park...that's where Henry said he saw those lights in the sky.

DOCTOR
The plot thickens.

He turns back to Maria.

DOCTOR
Right, stay here. Keep an eye on the King. Let us know if anything happens. Clara, let's go investigate.

The two of them begin to run off.

MARIA
How can I tell you if something happens?

DOCTOR
Shout really loud. That should do it.

Maria stares on at them, perplexed and a little anxious.

11 EXT. PARK - DAWN
A large empty field surrounded by trees - this is St James Park. Early morning, as the sun is just beginning to peek out above the horizon. [Track 6 ends] The Doctor and Clara walk through. The Doctor is holding out the sonic in front of him like a torch - it is pulsing and showing him the way.

DOCTOR
We're getting close to the source of that teleport.

CLARA
This is where those lights in the sky were seen. Do you think they're linked?

DOCTOR
Well, could be a coincidence.

CLARA
You don't believe in coincidences.

DOCTOR
Best guess right now? Landing lights. Something landed here a week ago, and now somebody's trying to teleport out of it.

CLARA
As good a theory as any.

DOCTOR
The other option is that Henry's right - it's a sign of his divine right.

CLARA
I still don't like him.

DOCTOR
You don't believe him?

CLARA
Never said that.

They walk on for a few moments in silence.

DOCTOR
I never asked, are you religious?

CLARA
Not really. I'm technically a Catholic - I never worked out how to cancel my membership. Didn't really go to church, except for special occasions. You know. Christmas, Easter. But no, I don't think I am.

DOCTOR
Because you don't think God is real.

CLARA
Well, I don't think it matters if it's real. Real, not real, doesn't make it less important. As long as you've got something to believe in.

DOCTOR
So what's your problem with Henry?

CLARA
My problem is that he twists that belief into a weapon. Uses it to legitimise his...betterness. Weaponises his followers' faith in God, and tells him that he deserves to be king more than anyone else. Which, y'know, just kind of isn't true. He doesn't actually deserve to be king just cos his dad was.

DOCTOR
You know, that is technically treason.

CLARA
Yeah, well, behead me then.

She smiles cheekily, and the Doctor reciprocates.

DOCTOR
So. If you've got to have something to believe in, what's yours? What do you believe in?

CLARA
I live part time in a bigger-on-the-inside blue box that travels in time and space, owned by an alien in a bowtie. We're currently trekking through a field to find an angel that just threatened Henry VIII. I try to suspend belief where possible.

DOCTOR
It's called an open mind.

CLARA
What about you, Doctor? What do you believe in?

At that moment the sonic starts bleeping more furiously. The Doctor stops.

DOCTOR
Aha! This is the spot the sonic has locked onto.

But in front of the Doctor and Clara is nothing except the vast expanse of the field.

CLARA
Right. So we've learnt that the sonic is broken. This was a wild goose chase.

DOCTOR
Or...quite possibly, a leap of faith.

He reaches his hand out in front of him slowly, and his palm brushes against what should be the air, but instead feels hard, cold and metal. Almost like the outer hull of a spaceship. He spins round to face Clara.

DOCTOR
If I told you that we're standing in front of an invisible spaceship would you believe me?

Clara pauses for a moment. Then she smiles.

CLARA
Open mind, right?

The Doctor smiles back. He turns back, and once more holds out the sonic. As if by magic, an opening appears from nowhere, like a portal in the sky - this is the door leading into the spaceship. [Track 7: Open Up]

DOCTOR
"Be lifted up, o ancient doors, that the Lord may come in." The Lord of Time, that is.

CLARA
That screwdriver works miracles.

DOCTOR
Tell me about it.

They venture through the door and into the spaceship.

12 INT. SPACESHIP - DAWN
A bright white room, clinical and precise - a cross between a scientist's lab and the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. At one end is a control panel in front of a (currently covered) windscreen, with four seats facing it. At the other, doors lead off to other space-y corridors. Along the walls are various screens showing holographic data. There are tables littered around the room, filled with science-y equipment. In one corner is a tall tube, big enough to fit a human inside. In the very centre of the room are five T-shaped tables, surrounded by machines and wires. Atop them lay four comatose humans - one black and three white, all dressed in regal outfits - seemingly plugged into the machines. Their arms are outstretched, as if in the shape of a crucifix. One table is empty.

DOCTOR
All white. Clean, sharp, minimalist. I should go back to this look.

CLARA
Doctor, look, there's people here.

She runs over to the people and checks them. The Doctor busies himself with the equipment on a table at the side.

DOCTOR
Be careful. Don't touch.

Clara notes that each person is connected to a form of life-support - a heart-rate monitor, x-ray scanner and so on. Each of them is wearing a metallic futuristic crown, which again has multiple wires and cables protruding out of the top.

CLARA
Oh my God, these must be the missing trumpeters. Which means this must be John.

DOCTOR
Who?

CLARA
Never mind. What's over there?

DOCTOR
Scientific papers. Data about basic human psychology, blood samples. And over here... equipment. Teleporter, nuclear phase facilitator, somatic transmogrifier. This isn't just a spaceship. It's a laboratory.

He runs to the control panel.

DOCTOR
Data entry banks. With this kind of technological design...oh. It all makes sense now.

CLARA
What does? Who are they?

DOCTOR
The Nullu-Samet. The Scholars of the Seventh Sector. They're scientists - they live for the pursuit of knowledge. They've devoted their lives to compiling an exhaustive database of the Universe and everything in it. The biology, the psychology, the culture. All of it.

CLARA
Right, okay. Encyclopaedia Universum. Got it.

DOCTOR
Except they take it a little far. You know how when scientists on Earth conduct a study, they're subject to rules, guidelines. A set of restrictions to make sure things are done safely and ethically. Well, for the Nullu-Samet, no such restrictions exist. As far as they're concerned, if it results in further scientific enlightenment, they're free to do as they please. Regardless of whether they cause harm to their subjects or those around them.

CLARA
Scientists without an Ethics Board. Oh my god.

The Doctor joins Clara in the centre of the room, standing over the humans.

DOCTOR
These humans...the Nullu-Samet have taken them for analysis. An experimental study into the human race, and this is their sample population.

CLARA
Are they alive?

DOCTOR
Uhhh...yes. Yes, they are. Look, heart rates, brain activity. That's what these crown things are. Neural monitors. They scan brain waves, monitor activity.

CLARA
Mind readers. These poor people have been abducted, and plugged into machines just to read their minds.

DOCTOR
Gives you better results than a questionnaire. This is anthropology without morality.

[Track 7 ends]

CLARA
So...so, what now? What are they looking at?

The Doctor fiddles with the controls, and a series of displays pops up on one of the screens.

DOCTOR
They've applied filters to the neural monitors. Analysing mental correlations.

CLARA
Correlations how?

DOCTOR
Well, of course, everyone has their own lives, but they want to cut through that. They're not looking at the individual here. They're trying to see what everyone is thinking about that's the same. Like...like Twitter! The top hashtag. They're looking for the most important event in the minds of these people, and by extension, the human race.

She realises.

CLARA
Oh. What's number #1 trending in the Tudors' minds?

The Doctor has the same realisation.

DOCTOR
The coronation. Hashtag-King-Henry-the-Eighth.

CLARA
That's why they were coming for Henry! To analyse him!

DOCTOR
The data bank. It's open on an entry on cultural stratification analyses.

CLARA
Sorry, I failed my gobbledygook A-Level.

DOCTOR
How civilisations throughout the universe set out hierarchies of leadership. That's their research question: on what grounds do people become leaders in Earth culture?

CLARA
Well, nothing really. We know that, right? It's just family heritage that determines the monarchy.

DOCTOR
Family heritage. Your bloodline. Hence the blood samples. Testing for genetic predisposition, inherent traits that produce leaders. But Henry VIII is their main subject of interest, they're not going to stop at a blood test and a urine sample. They'll go for full dissection if they get their hands on him.

CLARA
Not so much off-with-their-heads as out-with-their-innards.

DOCTOR
Imagine the damage this could do to history! The Tudor lineage cut off before it's barely started. The whole of the world will take a different path, the timelines shunted irrevocably out of kilter. We've got to get to Henry before the Nullu-Samet do.

CLARA
But then...where are they? You sent them back to this spaceship. So where did they go?

DOCTOR
Well, I disabled their teleport. And by the looks of this central node, it's not been fixed.

CLARA
Then they've used something else. How are they planning on getting to Henry? What else have they got there?

The Doctor looks back at the table by the wall, and then at the subjects, and then at the four chairs by the control panel.

DOCTOR
Oh. Ah. Four pilots. Four royal trumpeters. Somatic transmogrification.

He fiddles with one of the wires on the helmet of the closest subject to him.

CLARA
Somatic what? Transmogrification, what's that?

DOCTOR
Shapeshift technology. They've hooked it into the neural monitors.

CLARA
Meaning?

DOCTOR
Meaning they can replicate the images of the subjects. Steal their faces so they appear human. Keep a live link open. They're not just invited to the coronation - they're employed!

13 EXT. WESTMINSTER ABBEY - MORNING
[Track 8: Man and Wife] The Tudor street is bustling with crowds of people, already celebrating and jostling around to try and get to the front. In the distance we can see the Palace of Westminster. The large doors to the Abbey are currently shut, and standing in front of them are four men in Tudor doublets and tights, holding long brass instruments. These are the Nullu-Samet, disguised as the trumpeters - one of them is, of course, John.

14 INT. THRONE ROOM - MORNING
Servers and staff rush around Henry, fitting him with regal clothes and fussing over his hair. They are preparing him for his big moment.

15 INT. SPACESHIP - MORNING
The Doctor is fiddling with some equipment on a table at the side - an empty neural monitor.

CLARA
Doctor, what are you doing?

DOCTOR
A thing. A clever thing. If I'm lucky, a very clever thing.

CLARA
So the humans here are linked to the Nullu-Samet?

DOCTOR
Yes, via the neural monitors. They keep the image alive, allow access to their memories and thought patterns. The Nullu-Samet are connected to the neural monitor network, and that's how we're going to stop them.

He picks up the brain monitor and runs towards the exterior door.

DOCTOR
Come on! We've got to get back to the palace!

16 INT. THRONE ROOM - MORNING
Henry, now all dressed in his regal garb, stands with his wife next to him. He smiles at her, and she back at him.

FOOTMAN
Your Highness?

They both turn to look at the footman.

FOOTMAN
Are you ready?

17 EXT. PARK - MORNING
The Doctor and Clara race through the park. However, they find that they are running into a stream of people heading in the other direction to get towards Westminster Abbey. Clara bumps into a group of Tudor peasants.

CLARA
Excuse me! We have to see the King!

PEASANT
Yeah, well, join the queue. We all wanna do that, you're no more important than the rest of us!

CLARA
No, I- oh, get out the way!

She dodges past them.

18 EXT. COURTYARD - MORNING
The Doctor and Clara rush in to see Maria waiting nervously. She looks up at them.

MARIA
Doctor! Lady Clara! What are you holding there?

CLARA
Yeah, no time to explain. We need to get to the king, where is he?

MARIA
He left for Westminster Abbey, about ten minutes ago.

DOCTOR
And you didn't go with him?

MARIA
I'm not part of the procession, I wasn't allowed.

DOCTOR
I thought I told you to keep an eye on him!

MARIA
I tried!

DOCTOR
Well, you're only human. I'll forgive it this one time.

CLARA
Which way did they go?

MARIA
They went out that way.

CLARA
Come on, show us.

The three of them run off again. [Track 8 ends]

19 INT. WESTMINSTER ABBEY - NIGHT
As a regal fanfare sounds, Henry stands in front of his throne. Before him are a congregation of noblemen and peers of the realm. The Archbishop of Canterbury steps forward, and addresses the congregation.

ARCHBISHOP
Sirs. I here present unto you King Henry, your undoubted king. Wherefore all you who are come this day to do your homage and service, are you willing to do the same?

CROWD
God save King Henry!

[Track 9: Sherlock Who] At that moment, the great front doors heave open once more, and the Doctor, Clara, and Maria come tumbling in, the Doctor still holding the neural monitor at his side. The crowd turns and gasps. Henry looks furious.

HENRY
Doctor!

DOCTOR
Oops. Sorry everyone. Are we interrupting? Again.

CLARA
King of bad timing, he is. And you'd think time would be his speciality, really.

HENRY
Doctor! You will not ruin my official coronation ceremony! I will have you executed for this.

DOCTOR
Yes, brilliant plan, Henry, but before you do that, if you could let me monologue for a couple of minutes, that would be great.

CLARA
He's king of monologues too.

HENRY
Why on Earth would I let you do that?!

DOCTOR
Because I'm going to save your life.

CLARA
Do excuse the Messiah complex.

HENRY
He's not the Messiah!

CLARA
No, he's a very naughty boy!

HENRY
Save me from what, Doctor?

DOCTOR
From an evil beyond your reckoning.

HENRY
An attempt on my life?

DOCTOR
A force from beyond the stars. But not angels. No, these have a far more hellish agenda. There is evil hiding in this very room, your Highness.

Henry stops, and looks at the Doctor, as if willing him to continue. The Doctor takes this cue, and starts walking down the aisle towards the King, acknowledging the crowds staring at him from the pews as he does so.

DOCTOR
Oh! Hello everyone! I'm the Doctor, this is Clara and Maria-

CLARA
Hi.

They tentatively follow him.

DOCTOR
-and we're friends of your new king Henry, and I say friends in the broadest terms possible. But you don't care about us, do you? No, you're here for the Big Dog! The coronation of Henry Tudor himself. A momentous occasion. And it's brought you lot from all over the country, hasn't it? The nobles, and the lords, and the peers of the realm- hi.

He shakes one of the noblemen's hand.

DOCTOR
A gathering of the wealthy and elite, the poshest toffs in the whole land. It's like the Bullingdon Club without modern hygiene. Or in other words, it's like the Bullingdon Club. In this room are gathered, perhaps for the first time in a generation, the most important people in the whole of England.

HENRY
You mentioned a hidden evil, Doctor.

DOCTOR
Yes! I did. Demons, your highness. And they just walked right in here. They're hidden, they're- they're disguised. As ordinary people. Just another face in the crowd. Quite clever, really. I mean, you can't disguise yourself as a posh toff. Like I say, you're the most famous faces in England right now, you can't avoid the paparazzi. And these guys need anonymity. But that's quite easy to achieve. Because in a room full of posh toffs, who is no one looking at?

He pivots and points to the four royal trumpeters - the disguised Nullu-Samet that we saw earlier. [Track 9 ends]

DOCTOR
The staff. The help. Silently watching, but secretly running the whole operation, and no one pays them a second glance. The names left off the bottom of the Forbes Rich List.

HENRY
I don't understand…

DOCTOR
Your missing trumpeters have mysteriously reappeared just in time for the coronation, your Maj! I'd almost call it a miracle.

Maria clocks the John duplicate, and goes to run to him.

MARIA
John!

The John duplicate notices Maria, and stares at her, but Clara stops her from getting to him.

CLARA
No, Maria, stay back.

A look of confusion and desperation flickers across the John duplicate's face, as if he recognises Maria. For a moment, we see those kindly feelings flash in his eyes. Then, as quickly as it appeared, that look disappears, and John recomposes himself.

CLARA
It's not really John, it just looks like him.

MARIA
No, but he's right there!

HENRY
Well? Speak up then, men! Where have you been this past week!

JOHN
We are here for you.

They step forward as one.

DOCTOR
Allow me to just cut in here. Because I know who you are, Nullu-Samet, Scholars of the Seventh Sector, and you are not welcome here. So leave.

JOHN
There will be no resistance.

Suddenly, they all point their trumpets at the Doctor and Henry. Almost magically, they shimmer and transform into futuristic blaster weapons.

DOCTOR
Blimey. Are those nuclear phase blasters in your pockets, or are you just pleased to see me?

CLARA
I always said the trumpet was an assault on the ears.

One of the royal guards steps forward with a sword, but is immediately disintegrated by John's blaster. The congregation gasp in horror. [Track 10: Superior Minds 0:00 - 1:41]

JOHN
There will be no resistance. We are here for the king. You will stand aside.

MARIA
What's happened to him?

DOCTOR
Okay, then. Scholars. You asked for this. Cos you know who I am? I'm the Doctor. You've compiled the most extensive database in the Universe, so you know me. The Doctor.

The Nullu-Samet stop.

JOHN
The Time Lord from Gallifrey.

DOCTOR
The one and only. Quite literally.

JOHN
Our records feature very little on you. The life of the Doctor is an enigma, the secrets of which we are yet to divulge.

DOCTOR
Well, then, let me enlighten you.

He holds up the neural monitor.

DOCTOR
You recognise this, don't you? Your brains are linked up to these - you're connected to the network. So what happens if I plug my big, complicated mind into it?

He crowns himself with the neural monitor, and presses a button on the side. Immediately it starts whirring, and a flash of light appears above his head. In this light, we see flashes of the Doctor's life - standing over the Racnoss in the rain; yelling "unlimited rice pudding!" at Davros; hooked into the Eye of Harmony in front of the Master in the TARDIS. The Nullu-Samet flinch in pain, as the same moments seem to flash in their eyes.

DOCTOR
The legends of the Daleks talk of the Oncoming Storm. The Ancient Books of the Eternals speak of the Warrior of Trenzalore. The records of Gallifrey mention the Prince of Perpetuity. They're all me. The Doctor. I fly among the stars, and walk on all the worlds below them. I have toppled more empires, destroyed more armies, saved more worlds than you can imagine. I am what stands between you and your evil schemes. The Universe is under my protection. I'm the Guardian Angel of all of Time and Space, and there is no higher power than me. Scared yet?

The Nullu-Samet flinch in pain as the memories of the Doctor infiltrate their minds. [Track 10 ends] Maria wears a look of horror on her face as she watches the Doctor's brainwaves. Henry stares in shock and adoration at the pictures that flicker before him. And the Doctor has a look of pure concentration, and almost evil - but it is cut short when the neural monitor starts to fizz and spark. The light above his head disappears, taking the images with it, and the Doctor stumbles back then slumps to the floor.

CLARA
Doctor! Get that headset off him.

She and Maria run up to him and rip the neural monitor off his head. He looks up weakly. [Track 11: We Need To Get Back To The TARDIS]

JOHN
We will take the king now.

CLARA
Doctor, are you okay?

DOCTOR
Yes. Yes. I may have overheated the neural monitor.

CLARA
Head too big for the helmet?

DOCTOR
Don't go on about it.

They jump up. The Nullu-Samet are now walking slowly towards Henry, who is backing away from them.

CLARA
So. Plan. Got one?

DOCTOR
Plan A was to scare them off with my reputation.

CLARA
Death by ego. Pants to that. What's Plan B?

DOCTOR
Well, I never got as far as Plan B.

CLARA
You mean there's no Plan B?

DOCTOR
I had a lot of faith in Plan A!

CLARA
And where did Plan A get you? Less death-by-ego, more ego-death.

DOCTOR
It usually works! Respect Plan A!

CLARA
Is it alright if I don't?

The Nullu-Samet are still advancing towards Henry.

HENRY
Begone, treacherous pigs!

MARIA
John, just stop it, please!

Again, we see a quick flicker of acknowledgment on John's face, no more than a split second.

DOCTOR
I'm sorry, but that's not John.

Clara's head drops, but suddenly jerks back up. [Track 11 ends]

CLARA
Oh. OH. But it is. He recognised her.

DOCTOR
I'm sorry?

CLARA
The Nullu-Samet, it's plugged into John's brainwaves, it's got his memories, his thoughts. Which means it's not just his face - John is in there somewhere! We just have to, I don't know, unlock it somehow.

[Track 12: Elizabeth Arrives At Court] After a moment's thought, she grabs Maria and drags her in front of John, putting the two of them between John and Henry.

DOCTOR
No, Clara-

CLARA
Maria. Talk to him.

MARIA
But- you said-

CLARA
Yeah, I know what I said. I was wrong. He's in there somewhere, the John you know. Talk to him. Remind him who he is. Who you are. Who the two of you could be.

She motions for Maria to step forward. Maria does so meekly, so she stands only a few steps in front of the John duplicate.

MARIA
John? Please just stop all of this..

JOHN
Stand aside, or you will be destroyed.

The John duplicate raises his blaster and points it at Maria.

DOCTOR
No-

The Doctor goes to intervene, but Clara puts her arm up, blocking him. When Maria speaks now, she has a slight quiver in her voice.

MARIA
Would you hurt me? I thought- look, remember his majesty's birthday last year? He had that banquet, and you played for him, and he was so impressed with you that he made sure all the leftovers from the feast were given to the trumpeters. And you managed to get a bit extra, and you snuck it out to the courtyard, and you shared it with me.

The John duplicate hesitates, but does not lower its gun. Maria looks anxiously at Clara.

CLARA
Keep going. Remind him.

MARIA
And, uh- and we sat out under the stars and ate these leftovers. And it was proper good food, do you remember? And you were laughing, and gloating, and you said that his majesty called you the-

20 INT. SPACESHIP - MORNING
We focus on the unconscious figure of the real John, lying on the table. Despite his apparently comatose state, eyes still closed, he murmurs (and we hear Maria in voiceover speaking at the same time):

JOHN
-best black trumpeter in England.

21 INT. WESTMINSTER ABBEY - MORNING
We see a little flicker in John's eyes.

MARIA
And you said that all this food reminded you of a zajal from back home. And it turned out I'd learnt the poem too, when I was young. "The time for Feast preparation has arrived; Monday's the procession, so give me my reward." And it was nice because we were just talking about stuff that no one else here really knew.
A small smile washes over the John duplicate's face, again just for a split second.

MARIA
And we looked up into the sky, and there was a shooting star. And you pointed at it, and you said to me-

The John duplicate seems to acknowledge it, because it suddenly speaks at the same time as Maria.

MARIA and JOHN
That's God looking out for us.

Suddenly we see John's eyes light up, as his true personality bleeds through into the duplicate's body. He drops his gun, and smiles at Maria.

JOHN
Maria.

MARIA
John.

22 INT. SPACESHIP - MORNING
Suddenly, the real John, on the table in the spaceship, awakens with a gasp, and sits bolt upright. [Track 12 ends]

23 INT. WESTMINSTER ABBEY - MORNING
Almost simultaneously with the previous scene, the John duplicate and all of the other duplicates yell in pain, and promptly collapse on the floor. Their images flicker and glitch like holograms, before dissolving to reveal five hooded figures in a heap on the floor.

MARIA
I- John!

DOCTOR
It's okay! I think. He's fine, he's safe.

The Doctor sonics the bodies.

DOCTOR
You exacerbated his neural activity, and his brainwaves replaced those of the host body's. It disrupted the link, overloaded the circuit and cut the network. Temporarily fried their brains.

CLARA
You reminded him of his humanity. You pulled him out of the dark and into the light.

She smiles at Maria. Henry walks over gingerly.

HENRY
Doctor...what just happened?

DOCTOR
Oh, you're still here! Henry, yes.

He looks up and remembers the congregation, staring at the whole spectacle with open mouths.

DOCTOR
Yes! Hello. Crowds of people. Love an audience. Well. This was all just the interval entertainment, bit of a light show, amateur dramatics, but anyway, don't let us keep you. On with the ceremony, that throne's not going to sit on itself, your maj. Can you lot help us get rid of these lumps?

He gestures to the guards, and then to the unconscious Nullu-Samet. The guards compose themselves, and then hurriedly run to pick up the limp bodies. The Doctor, Clara, and Maria jump up and start walking back down the aisle to the front doors.

DOCTOR
Brilliant stuff. We'll get out of your hair now. Thanks for...things.

He doubles back quickly, recognising a noble and leaning into him.

DOCTOR
If you feel like, I don't know, writing about today in a manuscript - don't mention this bit. Not much of a story really.

He rejoins Clara and Maria walking out.

DOCTOR
Don't want to confuse time too much.

They walk out, followed by the guards carrying the unconscious hooded bodies, leaving just the King and the Archbishop of Canterbury at the front of the abbey. The Archbishop slowly walks forward, and cautiously makes the sign of the cross.

ARCHBISHOP
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...

24 INT. BANQUET HALL - EVENING
[Track 13: Merry Gejelh] An inordinately long oak table, but there are only three people sat at it: on one side are Henry and Catherine, on their thrones, and opposite them is the Doctor, on a significantly less regal chair. Between them, a grand smorgasbord has been laid out: great platters with towering hunks of meat, pies in various dishes, bowls full of overflowing sauces. It's unsurprisingly extravagant for a Tudor king, but still a remarkably superfluous amount of food, and you wonder how the three guests could even get through a quarter of it.

DOCTOR
You got any Spam?

HENRY
Those traitors...the hooded fellows. What did you do with them?

DOCTOR
Clara and I took them back to their spaceship, and recalled it back to their home planet. We, uh, sent them back to where they came from.

HENRY
Back to the depths of hell to dine with Lucifer.

DOCTOR
Sure, if you want. Pass the salt?

CATHERINE
This is the King of England you're talking to!

DOCTOR
Is it? I thought it was the sultan of...salt, never mind.

Henry nods at one of the footmen behind the Doctor, who reaches for an ornate gold salt cellar, and passes it to the Doctor. The Doctor begins to pour out some salt.

HENRY
Today was the greatest test to my faith. Just as Job's faith was tested by the Devil, so too I was visited by demons who wished to disrupt the Lord's work.

DOCTOR
Hell hath no fury like an academic scorned.

HENRY
But they did not succeed, and my power was truly vindicated. So now I am sure. This is God's will. I am Henry Tudor, King of England. And so much more than a mere mortal...I know that I am destined to some day walk among the Heavens. But you'd know all about that, Doctor.

DOCTOR
What do you mean?

HENRY
I saw into your soul today. Those images of yourself...I don't know how you did it, but by some form of magic, you showed us your true self. You walk among the heavens and sit at God's table. You are power beyond even my reckoning.

The Doctor looks off into space, digesting the words that Henry has said.

HENRY
I'm right, aren't I? You are like me - the Holy Spirit flows through your veins and you stride across this world but are unlike any man who resides on it.

DOCTOR
I'm just a man.

HENRY
No. You are much more than that. You are something heavenly.

DOCTOR
A very old man. I've been around a while. Seen a lot, maybe too much, of the universe. I try to help where I can, if I can. I'm not important, or special - I just try to do the right thing.

HENRY
And you wield such power. You could challenge God himself. Such knowledge. I should like that kind of power.

DOCTOR
Power isn't everything. Sometimes it just gets in the way of doing the right thing.

HENRY
Power is a terrible thing in the wrong hands. But thankfully, God has decreed that mine are not the wrong hands.

CATHERINE
Doctor, your food.

The Doctor looks down. In his distraction, he has continued to absentmindedly pour salt onto his plate, and a small pillar has formed on it. [Track 13 ends]

DOCTOR
Oops. Could I get a new plate? Two hearts, my blood pressure is high enough already.

25 INT. SERVING QUARTERS - EVENING
[Track 14: From Their Bellies Like Two Sparrows] Clara walks into a bare room with a low ceiling. There is no furniture, except for two barrels in the corner of the room, upon which now sit John and Maria, smiling at each other.

CLARA
Thought I might find you two lovebirds here.

MARIA
Lady Clara! Shouldn't you be at the feast?

CLARA
Nah. I'm on the 5:2 diet - dunno if time travel counts as a cheat day. Anyway, they're boring. You two are miles more interesting than the King and his many meat pies.

John laughs, and Maria lets out a naughty giggle.

CLARA
How are you feeling, John? Recovered properly?

JOHN
I think so. Not feeling so weak any more.

CLARA
I went past the kitchen. The head chef gave me this to help get your strength up.

She holds up a jug with a red liquid sloshing inside it, and a small wicker basket with hunks of bread in it.

MARIA
Is that-?

CLARA
Wine. Sign of a good night, I always find. And some bread.

She hands them over, and Maria and John graciously take them.

MARIA
I've never drunk wine before.

CLARA
Yeah, well, don't have too much. Before you know it, it's 3 am and you're throwing up in a dustbin outside your neighbour's house. Or was that just me at university?

Maria shakes her head, amused.

MARIA
You know, as scary as today was, I feel so much more connected to God now. It really does feel like there's someone out there watching over us.

CLARA
Yeah. There just might be. A bit of faith's a wonderful thing to have. So what's next for you guys?

MARIA
We ride back to Greenwich tomorrow. I think, once we're back there and all the chaos of the past few days dies down, we'll have more time to just be in each other's company.

JOHN
Well, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm going to ask for a raise. From what Maria was saying, being missing got everyone really panicked. Clearly I'm more important than they thought. And if I'm so important, they can pay me what I'm worth.

CLARA
Good on you, John!

MARIA
And what about you, miss? You going back to Blackpool?

CLARA
Yeah, we'll be off soon. In fact, I'd better go check up on the Doctor, see how long he's going to be. Just wanted to say goodbye, though.

She turns to walk off.

JOHN
Goodbye, Lady Clara. And thank you.

MARIA
Yeah, we'll always remember you. You're pretty great.

CLARA
Oh, Maria. It's you two who are the great ones. Take care, guys.

She smiles cheekily, and then runs off, leaving the couple alone with each other. [Track 14 ends]

26 INT. TARDIS ARCHIVES
[Track 15: Made A New Friend] Clara relaxes on a burgundy Chesterfield armchair, watching the Doctor put the manuscript back into a filing cabinet. She has a large leather bound book in her lap that she is casually reading. Next to her is another armchair, empty, and between the two chairs is a small table, with two cups of tea on saucers.

DOCTOR
There we go. A place for everything, and everything in its place.

CLARA
Still can't get my head around this room - all of time and space filed away and organised under the Dewey Decimal System.

DOCTOR
Encyclopaedia Universum indeed.

Clara continues reading from the book in her lap.

CLARA
Found it! According to this footnote, John will successfully negotiate a pay rise of double his salary, after writing a letter to the newly crowned Henry VIII. In 1512, he gets married, and Henry sends him a wedding present as recognition of his services to the throne.

DOCTOR
I do love a good happy ending.

CLARA
Yeah, no thanks to the Oncoming Storm. Move over, Time Lord - in a room full of stuck up aliens and wannabe kings, what we really needed today was a little bit of humanity.

DOCTOR
Ah, humanity. I knew there was a reason I kept you lot around!

CLARA
Real life! Ordinary, human lives saved the day today. A love story.

DOCTOR
Yeah. You're right, yeah. And somehow, it gets relegated to a footnote.

CLARA
Ah, sod the history books! It's like you said, Doctor. It's one thing reading about history, but it's another thing living it.

The Doctor silently nods, and then slouches himself down on the other armchair with a big sigh.

DOCTOR
You asked me earlier what I believe in. I've lived such a long life. I've seen gods and kings and empires and armies and after all that...well, when you've been around as long as I have, what's there left to believe in? I've seen the lifecycle of the Universe from birth to death and I know the complete timeline of everything that ever happened. But when you know everything...can you believe anything?

And the Doctor properly looks Clara in the eyes for the first time during this conversation

DOCTOR
The way you look at the universe...it reminds me of me, all those years ago when I first began. So full of wonder, so entranced by everything. Able to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. And somewhere along the way I lost that. But you haven't. You get what's important, and that- well, to me, that's a miracle.

CLARA
Well. I'm only human.

He smiles fondly at her - when he speaks now, it's with a sincerity that was missing from the last time he used this comment.

DOCTOR
I knew there was a reason I kept you around. Humanity.

They smile at each other, their bright eyes full of mutual adoration and understanding.

27 EXT. COURTYARD - NIGHT
Maria and John walk through the courtyard, arm in arm, with loved-up grins on their faces. They look up and out to the stars. A shooting star seems to arc across the sky, leaving a trail of brilliant white in a rainbow arc across the dark blue of night. John points to it.

JOHN
You see that? That's God looking out for us.

As we slowly pan up from the couple, and towards the sky, we can hear that that shooting star is making a faint VWORP VWORP sound. [Track 15 ends]
