Sophia's POV
I looked up when I heard the door open again and Demetri walked in but he froze immediately when he saw I had the curtains open and looked like he was refusing to step into the beam of sunlight that was currently separating the room.
"Close the curtain" he glared and I frowned confused since he'd been out in daylight before and I knew it didn't burn them so what was he so afraid off. "Close it" I sighed moving the curtain back in front of the window darkening the room once again as I stood angrily and moved away from the window. "You shouldn't open them"
"Why you don't burn so what harm is a little sunlight" I spat at him sitting on the lounge putting my feet up not caring for politeness.
"It's-"
"Complicated" I spat cutting him off. "You know you say that a lot" I added putting my arms around my stomach in hopes it'd stop growling but he must have heard because his head snapped over to me.
"You're hungry!" he exclaimed and I rolled my eyes at him.
"Well it is a basic human need" I snapped since I was annoyed and angry at him still.
"I didn't even think-" I scoffed at him and his response was to sigh before he went over to a very old school phone by the door and pressed a button before picking up the phone. "Valentina, prepara del cibo e portalo subito in camera mia" I turned to him with confusion at the Italian before he hung up the phone. "I'm...sorry Sophia, I should have gotten you food hours ago" I ignored him focusing my eyes in my lap toying with the end of my shirt which was beginning to smell seeing as I'd been wearing it for the past three days.
{Translation: Valentina, prepare some food and bring it to my room right away}
It was only ten minutes later before there was a knock on the door and he answered it, I peered over seeing the same human receptionists from when I arrived standing there with what looked like a tray off food, Demetri took it from her then nodded his head clearly dismissing her before shutting the door in her face which I didn't find very polite he could have at least said thank you.
"Il tuo cibo, signora" he smirked placing the tray down in front of me on the coffee table and my eyes widened when I saw the amount of food knowing I couldn't possibly eat it all, there was a very large steak looking like it was cooked 'well-done', three baked potatoes, a side of roast carrots, asparagus and a glass of water on the side.
{Translation: Your food, miss}
"I don't speak Italian" I remarked glaring at him.
"I know" he smirked making me roll my eyes as I stared at the food, mouthwatering at the smell but I didn't know whether or not to trust it since I wouldn't put it past them to have poisoned it with something or worse something that turned me since I had no idea how one became a vampire, some legends state you have to ingest their blood and then be killed so how did I know this wasn't a part of their plan. "It's not poisoned Sophia"
"Why don't you eat it first" I argued and watched his face fall.
"I don't eat human food" he replied and my eyes furrowed.
"At all?" I asked and he shook his head.
"No, our bodies no longer process the ability to digest and we have to throw up if we eat any normal food, it's very unpleasant" he replied and I frowned at him but decided to risk it since I was starving and he'd revealed more about his species so I guess I had to trust him.
I ignored the vegetables and went straight for the steak, cutting it up and was unattractively scoffing it down drinking some water as well as my mouth was so parched before I moved onto the vegetables leaving the asparagus since I hated it all while Demetri just sat on the other couch watching me eat with mild curiosity in his eyes which unnerved me but I was too hungry to care right now.
"Enjoy yourself" I scoffed once I was finished and resumed my seat on the couch.
"Actually I did, it's been a millennium since I was able to study a human this close"
"So that's what I am to you, a lab rat to be studied before inevitably killed" I spat at him with a deep scowl on my face.
"That's not what I meant" he scowled back leaning back in his seat putting out his arms on the backrest looking like he was getting quite comfortable as he continued to stare at me.
"You know that's annoying right"
"Only to you" he smirked and I rolled my eyes as I stood and started walking through his room looking over everything for the second time, focusing more on the books seeing a lot of old fashioned titles and plays going back over centuries. "See anything you like?" he asked and I could feel his close proximity behind me as my fingers grazed over the books spines looking at the dust to see what book was more frequently touched and smiled when I saw Shakespearean plays was the cleanest.
"Have a liking to Shakespeare?" I asked him taking it out and flipping it open to the page that had been bookmarked and smiled seeing it was on the play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and when I looked up Demetri's eyes were of course fixated on me. "This is my favorite as well" I smiled at him. "I've always wished to visit Athens, I've heard the architecture is the most spectacular sights ever"
"Yes they are" he replied and I looked up at him.
"You've been?" I asked and he nodded with a small smile playing at his lips and then I realised that he's probably been everywhere by now in however many years he'd walked the earth as a vampire. "What am I talking about of course you have, there's probably nowhere you haven't been" I replied putting the book back in its shelf.
"I haven't been to Australia" he replied making me smirk a little with a small laugh. "Or the Caribbean"
"Let me guess, too sunny?" I asked but didn't get an answer meaning I was even more determined to find out why he avoided the sun so much.
"I'll take you to Greece one day" he decided to say instead and I spun back around to him with wide eyes.
"You're serious?" he nodded his head.
"I would love for you to see my birthplace, you wouldn't even need a tour guide" my eyes widened even further.
"Your Greek?" he nodded his head with a smile. "Huh that actually doesn't surprise me, you look like one of those perfect Greek statues" I replied walking into his closest and he of course continued to follow me.
"Did you just call me perfect?" he asked and I frowned realizing that I had indeed said that.
"Don't flatter yourself, I was merely stating an observation seeing as your obviously made to attract the opposite sex and your prey being humans, somethings got to assist you might as well be a pretty face" I replied as I ran my hands over his clothes seeing a whole lot of black and dark greys...did he wear any other colors. "And you already have a girl to fawn over you so why would I bother" I spat at him remembering the woman that had fixed my splintered my arm for me.
"You mean Heidi?" he asked, I frowned choosing not to reply as I continued on through the closet into the bathroom seeing it as well matched Demetri's personality, everything was black and grey. "You jealous?" he asked and I could hear the smile in his voice despite not looking at him, my eyes were on the gigantic floor level spa bath, what did a vampire need this huge of a bath for.
"Sure your baths big enough?"
"I don't know, never used it" he replied and I turned raising an eyebrow at him.
"Then why have it?"
"The Volturi have the best of the best" he shrugged and I rolled my eyes at him.
"Good to know" I muttered moving back into the bedroom. "You know I'm curious"
"Oh do enlighten me on your curiosity"
"Don't be a smartass" I remarked glaring at him.
"Seeing as I'm going to be stuck here I'd like to know my boundaries and rules"
"That sounds fair" he replied nodding his head and we took a seat on the couches again sitting opposite each other as he started explaining things to me.
1. Never leave the room without him around for my safety.
2. Do not speak to the ancients ever unless they ask to speak with me or give me permission to do so.
3. Don't leave the castle under any circumstances.
4. Do not pester Jane and Alec unless I want to suffer pain worse than death...yeah that one I was more than happy to follow.
"I guess I can follow them" I smiled at him crossing my legs and arms once he was finished and he smirked at me. "Anything else?" I pressed him.
"Yes actually, the curtains stay closed" he told me and my smile dropped.
"You know I'm going to need sun right"
"I'll get you vitamins" he argued and I rolled my eyes.
"What happens to a vampire in sunlight?" I asked him and he frowned avoiding my eyes.
"It doesn't matter" he replied and I sighed giving up, it wasn't my right to press him.
"So what do you do in your free time besides read obviously?" I asked him and he suddenly smiled getting up and held his hand out to me making me frown at him in confusion and distrust for a split second.
"You asked, do you trust me?"
"Well you did kidnapped me but I guess I kind of have to" I smirked especially when I saw his frown before I took his hand and let him pull me up from the couch and he started heading for the door. "Uh...I thought it wasn't safe"
"It's not but your with me and I won't let anything happen to you" he replied and I turned to him with a small smile, my heart fluttered a little at how that statement made me feel as he lead me out of his room and I was once again finding myself being lead through the halls as I was intrigued on where he was leading me.
He pushed open a set of double doors and we were walking outside, the sun had set about an hour ago meaning it was dark outside which meant I couldn't see what happened to him in the sunlight even though I was determined to find out eventually, the only lights were the manmade ones surrounding a beautiful garden surrounded by high stone walls meaning I was still trapped within the castle walls but it was nice to be outside.
"This is really what your life consists of, reading and late night strolls?" I asked him as he lead me around the gardens, the flowers were in bloom and it was actually quite beautiful with all the twinkling lights and if it had been any other guy that brought me here I would say it was romantic but this was Demetri.
"No I participate in other things"
"Like what?" I pressed.
"I can't tell you that" he replied suddenly tense which told me it was a topic he wasn't willing to discuss. "I'd rather talk about you, as you keep reminding me your stuck here so I think we order get to know each other"
"Small talk...really?" I smiled looking over at him as he walked beside me, hands clasped behind his back, I reckon us walking side by side like this would look like a scene from one of those old fashioned black and white movies that I loved, just without a chaperone but for Demetri this was probably normal for his time.
"Something wrong with small talk?" he asked making me shake my head.
"Okay, you told me you're Greek, when were you born?" I asked him waiting patiently for his answer.
"That's hard for me to remember" he replied making me frown as I stopped.
"What do you mean?"
"Over time some vampires lose their human memories, I've been alive for over a millennium" my eyes widened.
"You're a thousand years old?!" I exclaimed shocked since I hadn't really thought about how long he's been alive, he nodded with a small smile.
"I know I was born in Greece around 1000 AD, I don't remember much about my parents except that my mother died when I was quite young and even when I was human I couldn't remember her face all that well, my father was a very strict and controlling man, from the time I was considered an adult he was pushing me to be just like him, trying to get me to settle down with some broad and continue our family's name, I of course didn't want that"
"So how old were you when you..." I trailed off.
"We calculated time a bit differently, we counted the full moons, I lived through 254 which means I was turned around the age of 21" he explained and I nodded as we continued to walk.
"So were you turned by the Volturi?" I pressed.
"No I was turned by a man named Amun, the leader of the Egyptian coven" he explained and I frowned not understanding why he was with the Volturi if they weren't his maker, from what I got off the Cullen's is that a vampires coven is like their adopted family. "Enough about me though, I'd like to know more about you" he added and my frown deepened as I stopped, we were stood in front of a large fountain.
"There's honestly nothing worth telling"
"Call me interested" he pressed and I sighed.
"Well I've never known my family, they never bothered to even drop me off at an orphanage I was found abandoned in a park and put into the foster system where I was bounced from foster family to foster family my entire life, that was until I turned eighteen then I was thrown out of my last foster home forced to fend myself"
"And that's how you ended up in Seattle?" he pressed, I frowned looking down at my feet.
"Not exactly, I was mostly housed in Portland, Oregon but after I was kicked out of the system I started working in some dive bars-"
"You what?" he asked seemingly shocked by that.
"It was all the work I could find, I didn't exactly finish high school because I just couldn't keep up with all the moving around so I wasn't skilled to do anything else, while working at one bar I met a guy-" he cut me off with a small growl that I would've thought was possessive and jealous. "He promised me a better live and like an idiot I believed him, it was actually good for the first couple of months, we moved to Seattle and I got a job at a much better bar as a bartender but then things started getting bad, he'd stay at home and drank all day and by the time I got home he'd be drunk and demand dinner, I obliged obviously since I used to do it in my foster homes all the time but then the beatings would start whenever I was a little bit late or was too tired to cook-"
"He beat you?" Demetri asked and all I could do was nod my head. "When you said no one would notice your missing-"
"He's dead" I told him looking up seeing his eyes widen a little.
"How?" he asked and I frowned shaking my head, I didn't want to talk about it. "It's okay, you don't have to talk about it" I nodded my thanks before shivering a little as the wind held a chilly bite to it. "Your cold?" he pointed out but I shook my head. "Here" he pulled his grey cloak off and swung it over my shoulders clipping the clasp into place.
"Thanks but should I even be wearing this?" I asked and he frowned. "I kind of gathered that these were for the vampires"
"They're a symbol for your status in the guard"
"The guard?" I pressed.
"The Volturi Guard" he explained and I nodded my head.
"Are their like different levels since Jane and Alec have black cloaks but you and Felix have grey ones" he nodded his head.
"Yeah their higher up, more valued amongst the Volturi"
"What makes them more valued?" I pressed and he frowned and I instantly knew that wasn't something he was open to tell me, I had to understand that there was things in the vampire world that he wouldn't and probably couldn't tell me.
"Just avoid them" he reminded me and I nodded my head.
"No problem there" I replied yawning a little and he chuckled.
"I should probably get you into bed" he said and I glared at him.
"I'm not a kid" I protested but he just continued to laugh annoying the hell out of me, I glared once more and started walking away.
"Okay, okay I'm sorry" he quickly said catching up with me taking my arm and started leading me back inside the castle and made it back to his room without running into anyone thank god since I don't know how I'd feel around anyone else, I was growing comfortable with Demetri but I wasn't so sure about any other vampires. "You can use the bathroom, uh...I don't have any shampoo or uh...other things"
"It's fine" I shrugged.
"I also don't have any clothes fit for a woman-"
"Demetri, I'm fine really, I can sleep in what I've got on" he frowned but nodded none the less before he left me in the bathroom closing the door behind him and only once I couldn't hear his footsteps anymore did I undress and hop into the shower just to wash the last couple of days filth from my body.
Demetri didn't have any shampoo or body wash like he said so I pretty much just had to use water meaning it was a quick shower, once I was done I hopped out and re-dressed using a towel to dry my hair since there was no hair-dyer either but once I was finished I walked out of the bathroom through the closet and back into the bedroom seeing Demetri sitting in front of a lit fire in the fireplace with a book open in his lap feet crossed on the table but he looked up clearly hearing me.
"You can use the bed" I frowned looking at the bed hesitantly, I didn't feel comfortable sleeping in his bed.
"Uh...I'm good, I think I'll just take one of the couches" he frowned looking over at me as I walked over and handed him back his cloak before I took a seat on the other couch laying down my head because I was bordering on exhausted having not had a decent sleep.
"You sure you don't want the bed?" I nodded my head with my eyes closed hearing his sigh before I heard him move then a blanket was being draped over me and a pillow was being dropped on my face.
"Hey!" I protested eyes widening seeing him standing over me with a smile on his face amused clearly.
"You're the one that won't sleep in a perfectly comfortable bed" I frowned rolling my eyes as I placed the pillow under my head closing my eyes again as I pulled the blanket up to my chin listening to him settling into the other couch again, I peeked one eye open seeing him reading again with no light except the glow from the fire, I took him in as he stared down at the book, his eyes were furrowed tightly concentrating on the words of whatever he was reading and they captivated me and even though his irises were blood red I actually found him attractive as hell. "Anyone ever tell you it's rude to stare?" I immediately shut my eyes again and I even rolled over to face the back of the couch so I wasn't tempted to look again hearing his singular laugh as I willed myself to fall asleep.
Demetri's POV
I continued reading through one of Shakespeare's plays listening and watching Sophia sleep across from me, she'd turned to face away from me meaning I couldn't see her face but I could hear her heartbeat and I was confused by how soothing it actually sounded to me despite the fact that it was pumping her fragrant and delicious smelling blood all through her body and I don't think I'd ever get over it or used to it.
I understood Cullen's struggles with his own human, I envied his strength but he had his lifestyle to help with his restraint which is where I fell, my...hunger had never been tempted like this and my usual prey was exactly everything this girl was yet I didn't want to partake in my thirst for her blood but what if it came down to me not having a choice...what if she hurts herself in my presence and I can't control myself.
"No" I looked up at her seeing she was now laying on her back. "No...please...I'm sorry" my brows furrowed, she was dreaming and it clearly wasn't a very good one. "Help!" I was up in an instant as her screams grew more louder.
"Sophia" I touched her arm.
"No...I'M SORRY!"
"Sophia!" I called out to her. "Wake up, wake up" she had tears running down her face failing her arms out...god what the hell do I do. "Soph, wake up please" I begged her wrapping my hands around her wrists so that she wasn't going to hurt herself.
"What the hell Demetri?!" I glared up at Jane as she looked angry storming into my room. "Shut her up"
"Get out!" I yelled angry at her and Sophia chose that moment to finally wake up with a loud gasp and immediately looked around before her eyes fell onto Jane and she started backing away. "Jane leave" I told her and she glared at me, I prepared for the pain of her gift but it never came and she left the room without a word allowing me to turn my attention to Sophia.
"I'm sorry, I'm..." her tears grew more persistent and although I've never had any experience with consoling humans I found myself pulling her towards me in a hug keeping the blanket between us so I didn't shock her with my ice cold skin. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you" I chuckled.
"It's alright Soph"
"Soph?" she asked and I froze realizing that I was indeed calling her 'Soph'
"Are you okay?" she shook her head shivering and I knew it was out of fear of whatever she'd been dreaming of. "Come here" I pulled her into my lap surprising even myself but the thought of her fear and not physically being able to help her was enough for me to want to do anything I could to ease her pain.
"Demetri" she called after a few silent minutes.
"Yeah?"
"Thank you"
"For what?" I asked confused since I haven't done anything to be thanked for, I've done nothing for her except kidnapping her.
"For being kind to me, I can't even count the number of people in my life who have done that"
"I kidnapped you" I felt myself needing to remind her.
"I know" she replied confusing me looking down seeing her looking at me with a soft smile that seemed so out of place right now.
"I think you're still tired, you should go back to sleep" she sighed nodding before she shocked my entire body by entwining her hands in my shirt settling even closer to me, her natural instincts should be making her shy away from me but here she was wanting to be even closer seeming unfazed by my ice cold skin...this woman was something else entirely.
