1 SPACE
[Track 1: Lift Off] Aerial view of a planet from orbit. Large, with a green gaseous atmosphere. Vorodin. A small, pod-like spacecraft suddenly shoots across space, the camera moving to follow it as it hurtles down. Pursuing it from behind are a group of four of five flashier looking pods. We see inside them are single pilots dressed in black uniforms, bold white hair and red eyes. Agents of the Shadow Proclamation.
PILOT 1
Move in, boost thrusters to 78 percent. We can't afford for him to make planetfall.
PILOT 2
Boosting thrusters now.
PILOT 1
Ready plasma cannons. If we can take out his engines, he'll be a sitting duck.
Outside, metal panels in the front of the flashy pods fold open, revealing bulky looking cannons.
PILOT 1
Lock onto target.
The display screen in front of him has a cross-hair target that lingers across the screen, trying to find the other pod. It zooms in the view, focusing onto the pod as it moves closer to the planet. Finally, it syncs up with it, and turns red.
PILOT 1
Fire!
The pods open fire, great red laser bolts shooting out and bombarding the other pod. It's engulfed in flames and smoke, but as it clears, we see the boosted on one side of the spaceship have been damaged. The ones on the other side, however, remain functional. They activate, turning the pod towards the planet.
PILOT 1
He's still got enough booster power to make planetfall. Move into blockade formation! Adjust for potential escape maneuvers.
The pods begin moving underneath the other pod, coming together to form a barrier.
PILOT 1
Channel all power into external force fields. He's coming at us with everything he's got.
Yellow shimmering fields of light surround each pod; a form of forcefield. The other pod speeds towards the wall.
PILOT 1
He's not slowing down. Brace for impact!
The other pod slams into the wall, smashing through the force fields which flicker and deactivate as sparks fly out from the other pods. Chunks of them are ripped away, some pilots thrown out into the vacuum of space. The side of the other pod, the one with the functioning boosters, is torn away in the collision, leaving the pod in freefall towards the planet, burning up as it passes into the atmosphere. The camera view fades out, revealing the viewpoint as it is being displayed on a holographic screen, in the middle of a white marble room.
2 INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION HALLWAY
Many people operate control panels and screens dotted around the room, all dressed in black robes, with white hair, and red eyes. Overlooking the room is the Shadow Architect.
SERVANT
Damage sustained by Justice Squad reads at 78%. The fugitive has entered Vorodin atmosphere.
The Shadow Architect bangs her fist into the control panel in front of her in anger.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Now he's outside of our jurisdiction. We can't make a move against him.
She presses a button on the panel in front of her which shuts off the display of the ships above Vorodin.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Time for plan B, it would seem.
She presses another button. It opens a vidlink to a dark figure, obscured by the camera.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Captain. The fugitive has escaped to Vorodin. Prepare your fleet for dispatch immediately.
The figure steps into the light. It's a Judoon.
KOL-DON-TON
At once, Architect.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Your payment will be delivered upon the fugitive entering our custody. Do not fail us.
The Captain nods, grunting viciously.
3 INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION CORRIDOR
The Judoon marches towards a grand double door. Standing either side of the door are two helmeted Judoon, who follow him out as he marches through the corridor. He reaches another door which slides open as he approaches, revealing a huge metal hanger.
4 INT. HANGAR
He stands up to the edge of a balcony overlooking the immense space. Forming a grid across the hangar are several of the Judoon's tubular ships.
KOL-DON-TON
Ro to sho. Wo bo no vo to co to fo. Do bo wo jo. To jo wo bo so. (Ready the ships. We advance on Vorodin to capture the fugitive. Execute all who intervene. Justice will be served.)
The camera pans down to reveal a squadron of hundreds of fully armoured Judoon standing to attention. All together, they click the safety off their bulky laser weapons, creating a huge sound that echoes ominously around the hanger. [Track 1 ends]
ROLL TITLES
5 INT. TARDIS
[Track 2: The Dance of The Naked Doctor 1:23 - 2:13] A loud, screeching alarm is blaring through the TARDIS, a light flashing on one of the control panels. The Doctor is running around frantically, pulling levers and pressing buttons, as Clara runs into the console room.
CLARA
What the hell is that noise?
DOCTOR
The parental guidance alarm.
CLARA
The what?
DOCTOR
The parental guidance alarm! I installed it years ago.
CLARA
Never mind that, can you just turn it off?
The Doctor flicks one final switch, and the alarm comes to a stop.
DOCTOR
Aha, see? Easy peasy.
CLARA
What is this parental guidance alarm then?
DOCTOR
It's a warning system, it scans our location and warns us if there's anything untoward or particularly nasty going on near us. I installed it years ago, back when I travelled with Susan. Didn't want her seeing anything too inappropriate while we travelled.
CLARA
Susan, your granddaughter, right? You mentioned her back on Akhaten.
DOCTOR
Glad you remembered.
CLARA
So, this alarm. Why's it going off?
DOCTOR
This planet we've just passed, Vorodin. Very nasty place, all sorts of dodgy dealings going on. That's what the Intergalactic Index is saying anyway.
CLARA
And how come the alarm's only going off now?
DOCTOR
What do you mean?
CLARA
Well since I've been with you we've hardly been to the friendliest places in the universe, and it's never gone off before.
DOCTOR
Of course it didn't because it wasn't turned on. It was probably reactivated alongside the HADS when I brought that back online. But when it is online, it works perfectly.
CLARA
Did it work when you were with Susan?
DOCTOR
...No. I don't think it has actually gone off before at all.
CLARA
Just a wild guess, but do you think maybe you never turned it on at all? You just forgot about it until it got turned back on with the HADS thingy?
DOCTOR
...Shut up.
Clara giggles. [Track 2 ends]
6 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - EVENING
[Track 3: Ahead Slow] A bustle of activity, in the centre of a great shining city of towers. Various creatures and aliens wander about the market, most of them green-skinned humanoids. It all seems surprisingly lively and colourful for a criminal undergrowth. Although the peace is quickly disturbed by a great rumbling sound and a slight shake of the ground. Everyone looks up as an object hurtles through the cloudy night sky, burning a deep copper colour. The pod the Shadow Proclamation was chasing. Sparks flying, bits of debris burning up and flying off and the pod descends. As it comes towards the market, people begin running and screaming. They scramble for cover and cover their heads with their arms as the pod just skims right above them. It continues through the sky, eventually reaching a derelict section of the city. It crashes straight into the buildings.
7 INT. RUINS - EVENING
The place is engulfed in smoke and dust. As it clears, it reveals a huge pile of rubble, with the burned and smashed remains of the pod strewn about. Eventually a hand pokes through, then an arm, a shoulder, and soon a head. A young man with that same shade of green skin, with a shock of dark black hair, wearing a plain grey jumpsuit, climbs his way from the wreckage, blood trickling down his forehead. Ririnax. He speaks with a rough, husky voice.
RIRINAX
Home. Home at last.
He stands up and begins to lumber out of the wrecked building.
8 INT. TARDIS
Clara looks at the TARDIS screen with the Doctor.
CLARA
So, with Vorodin being so nasty and vicious, we're heading straight past it.
DOCTOR
No, we're heading straight for it.
CLARA
Of course we are.
DOCTOR
In my 1000+ years of experience, I've found that in the deepest, darkest corners of the universe, there is always bound to be at least one person in desperate need of help. So we're going to find them.
CLARA
Are you sure that's a good idea?
DOCTOR
Probably not, but it's the right thing to do.
The Doctor pulls down the materialisation lever, and the TARDIS comes to a stop. He hops up to the TARDIS doors, with Clara following behind. Just before he goes to open them, he spins around, Clara yelping to a sudden stop to avoid bumping into him.
DOCTOR
Now, as I'm sure you probably guessed, this place is extremely dangerous, so there are three rules which you must strictly adhere to. One, don't wander off. Two, don't wander off. And three, don't wander off .
CLARA
Okay. You got it.
DOCTOR
Good. Now, let's go save some souls.
He takes Clara's hand and they leave the TARDIS. [Track 3 ends]
9 EXT. ALLEYWAY- NIGHT
[Track 4: A Tendency To Float] Round a corner from the main marketplace, the TARDIS is parked in a damp and dingy alleyway. The door swings open and out swing the Doctor and Clara.
CLARA
So, where do we start?
DOCTOR
Looks quiet. Might be good for the gossip routine. Go through the main market, keep our ears peeled for anything that sounds like trouble, then investigate further.
He licks a finger and holds it up in the air, before pointing to the right.
DOCTOR
This way, I think.
He drags her towards the market. The camera pans back, and we see on the other side of the alley looking towards them is Ririnax. As they leave, he walks up to the TARDIS. He looks all around it, and pushes open the door, and steps inside, his jaw dropping in astonishment.
10 INT. TARDIS
He marvels at the sight of the blue box's rather roomy interior.
RIRINAX
What are you?
He walks up to the console, and rubs his hands along the edge of it.
RIRINAX
You sound...alive.
He runs his hands along the edge of the console.
RIRINAX
You feel alive. Are you a ship?
A warping sound echoes through the room; the TARDIS responding.
RIRINAX
You're not like any ship I've ever seen. All this tech… you could probably slip right under the Judoon's scanners. Those two must have been your pilots. I've gotta find them.
He runs back out of the TARDIS. [Track 4 ends]
11 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - NIGHT
The Doctor and Clara walk through the market, listening to all the hustle and bustle of the crowd.
CLARA
I thought this place was supposed to be full of dirty criminals and arms dealers.
DOCTOR
Yes?
CLARA
So how come everybody looks like they're dressed for Mardi Gras? I hardly think that fits the typical uniform code for the scum of the universe.
DOCTOR
Don't be so cliched, there's thousands of cultures out there across the universe, each with a different way of expressing different ideals, different…
CLARA
Yeah, and they're not exactly selling the most dangerous looking contraband either. Look, there's a bird man thing over there selling flowers.
DOCTOR
This could all just be one massive front. Den of inequities do need to try and stay private, they can't just broadcast themselves out to the unsuspecting public, can they?
CLARA
We've been to plenty of dodgy places across the universe, and not a whole lot of them bothered to hide it.
DOCTOR
But it has to be. The TARDIS databanks showed it, and I've never known them to be wrong. Trust me, there's nothing that could possibly make this place worse than it already is.
[Track 5: Judoon Warning Transmission] Another great rumble, similar to before, but much much bigger. As they stumble to keep their balance, Clara and the Doctor look up towards the sky to see a fleet of five Judoon ships descending towards the planet.
DOCTOR
Well... maybe one thing could.
CLARA
What are they?
DOCTOR
Judoon. I suppose it only makes sense. Come on!
He grabs Clara's hand and they run for cover.
12 INT. JUDOON COMMAND SHIP - NIGHT
The Judoon Captain monitors his troops as the ship descends, as controlled by pilots in a variation of the standard armour, with white stripes decorating their helmets and a symbol of a Judoon craft on their chest.
JUDOON PILOT
No clo bro fo flo lo co. Sho so bo no sto. (No clear area for fleet landing, Captain. Sector surroundings by native structures.)
Kol-Don-Ton grunts, and walks up to one of the control screens.
KOL-DON-TON
Lo bro po lo sho. (Locate area of low significance.)
The pilots activate some controls, and a large red circle makes its way across a map of Vorodin.
JUDOON PILOT
Bro po vo sto lo bo mo fro zo. (Area of uninhibited structures located around main exclusion zone.)
KOL-DON-TON
Pro po co no. Do to sto co bo lo spo. (Prepare plasma cannons. Destroy the structures, clear a landing space.)
Outside, panels on the common ship's exterior open up, revealing huge and very deadly looking cannons, which protrude out and begin to open fire on the group of buildings around where the pod crashed.
13 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - NIGHT
People run and scream as rocks and debris fly split apart and fly into the light air, a little weaker than earth gravity, but still has enough similarity to force the rubble to come crashing down on top of them. Amongst the chaos, we see the Doctor and Clara trying to reach safety.
CLARA
You admit coming here was a mistake then, yeah?!
DOCTOR
I could have hardly predicted a Judoon squadron was going to land right on top of us, could I?
CLARA
Well, factor that in next time we decide to go on a suicide mission!
Another shot of the Judoon's cannons. A chunk of the building next to them is blown off, and slams towards them.
DOCTOR
Look out!
A great cloud of dust swarms up around them as more rocks fall, cutting them off from each other. Clara coughs and picks herself up off the floor.
CLARA
Doctor?
DOCTOR
Clara! Clara, are you alright?
CLARA
Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. What about you?
DOCTOR
Fine on my end too. But I can't get through.
Another crumble, as more of the building begins to topple.
DOCTOR
This place will be nothing but ruins in a minute! Get somewhere safe, away from the Judoon! I'll find you, I promise! Now go!
Clara gets to her feet and runs.
DOCTOR
TARDIS. Must get back to the TARDIS.
14 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - NIGHT
Clara is trying to push through the onslaught of people running away from the Judoon ships and their cannons. She fights against the current, trying to find a safe refuge, but the force of the crowd knocks her to the floor. She desperately looks around for a way out, though is trampled under the crowd. Suddenly, from the side of the street, she sees a man holding out his hand; Ririnax.
RIRINAX
Grab my hand!
Clara grunts, and stretches out towards him. She manages to reach him, and he helps her up and out of the crowd. They duck and hide down an empty alley.
CLARA
Thank you. I didn't know if I was gonna get out of that alive!
RIRINAX
I still don't know if any of us are gonna get out of this alive. Come on, we need to find somewhere safe. Before the Judoon get here.
He takes her hand and leads her down the alley. They dart down another alley, taking one more glance towards the Judoon ships.
RIRINAX
Let's not go down that way.
He drags her in another direction.
CUT TO:
Back at the Judoon landing site, the ships descend onto the remains of the destroyed buildings. Landing supports protrude out from the base of the skips as they land on the surface. At their base, a platform descends, and squadrons of Judoon begin marching out across the planet's surface. The public continue to flee, but the rhino thugs claim their first victims, grabbing them and shoving them to the floor to scan. [Track 5 ends]
15 INT. TARDIS
[Track 6: Quarantined] The doors swing open and the Doctor runs inside.
DOCTOR
Okay, biodata triangulation, haven't done this for a long while.
He frantically dashes about the console operating several controls.
DOCTOR
Let's hope I'm not too out of practice. Otherwise she'll be caught between the interior and exterior dimensions and be ripped apart. But let's try and stay optimistic.
He runs round to the dematerialisation lever, and yanks it down. The TARDIS engines vworp into life, before sputtering and fading back out again.
DOCTOR
That's not supposed to happen.
Suddenly, the lights around the console room flash red, and the display screen on the console is taken up by a red flashing warning, with an icon of a Judoon in the centre.
JUDOON (oc)
Kro Kro Tro Kro So Fro So So To.
The Doctor swings the screen round to look at it.
DOCTOR
An exclusion zone? Stupid, stupid Judoon! Ah, well. Looks like we're going to have to do this the old fashioned way.
He goes back to the controls, operating one panel with the screen in front of him.
DOCTOR
Sorry, old girl but I can't fly you to her, But I can still use you to find her.
On screen, we see a series of maps, which zoom in, focusing on one particular point which the Doctor navigates towards. Eventually, the screen focuses on a single building, with two flashing red dots inside.
DOCTOR
Gotcha. Hello, and who's your friend?
He presses some more buttons, and we see the screen select one of the red dots, which brings up another window, which brings up a form of database containing personal details. It cycles through them all, trying to find a match. As it does, we hear a small bong from the screen, although the camera is focused on the Doctor's face, which drops in shock.
DOCTOR
Oh dear. Not good. Not good at all.
He leaps forward, sprinting towards the door. [Track 6 ends]
16 INT. EMPTY BUILDING - NIGHT
[Track 7: Spock's Personal Log] This building appears to have been a warehouse of some kind. Clara sits on a crate, while Ririnax peeks tentatively out of a window.
RIRINAX
Monsters. Every last one of them.
CLARA
I'm sorry?
Ririnax turns away from the window.
RIRINAX
The Judoon.
CLARA
Who exactly are they? The Doctor...my friend, he mentioned them. I should really find him.
RIRINAX
They're mindless thugs. Mercenaries for hire.
CLARA
Mercenaries? What are they doing here? This place hardly seems like it's worth attacking.
RIRINAX
They're here for me.
CLARA
You?
RIRINAX
Don't you recognise me? The Shadow Proclamation's had my face out on wanted vidcoms for the past 20 cycles now.
CLARA
I've been away.
RIRINAX
I'm Ririnax. Although most people know me as Ririnax the Ravenous now.
CLARA
Okay. Cool sounding name, tiny bit threatening.
RIRNAX
Oh no, don't worry. I don't want to hurt you.
CLARA
Are you sure?
Clara looks around nervously.
RIRINAX
I just want your help.
CLARA
What with?
RIRINAX
I need you to get me away from the Judoon.
Clara nods, but inside is dreading what's coming.
17 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - NIGHT
The Doctor stops in the almost desolate marketplace for a moment to get his bearings, then turns to run down the market street. He comes to a corner in the street and turns it, and is faced with the Judoon Captain and his squadron, who have the citizens in chains and against the wall. It takes out a device and presses it against their mouth, and they speak into it.
KOL-DON-TON
Language assimilated. Designation: Mars English.
JUDOON TROOPER
No! To pro so jo bo ro! (No! This one speaks in Arat!)
Kol-Don-Ton is puzzled.
DOCTOR
Ah, hello. Judoon. Judoon without his helmet as well, so I'm guessing you're in charge. I think you'll need a universal translator.
The Judoon stares at the Doctor, who points over to a stall. It snaps, then it barks orders into its communicator, before heading towards the stall.
DOCTOR
Looks like 20 credits each!
They ignore the Doctor and snatch the devices from the stall and place them on their chest unit.
STALL OWNER
Oi, you can't do that! That's thieving, that is! That's my stock!
Once they have all placed a universal translator on, the Captain returns to the Doctor, raises his scanner and scans the Doctor's forehead.
KOL-DON-TON
Fugitive match negative.
DOCTOR
I should hope not. So, as I was saying, you're the boss.
KOL-DON-TON
I am Captain of this Judoon fleet.
DOCTOR
Fleet? Blimey. How can you bring a fleet here? The Shadow Proclamation has no jurisdiction over Vorodin, it's a Class 5 Epsilon Rate conforming planet.
KOL-DON-TON
Shadow Proclamation has no jurisdiction, but Judoon do.
DOCTOR
Even though you're working for them? Sounds like cheating to me.
KOL-DON-TON
How do you we are here from the Shadow Proclamation?
DOCTOR
Because I know who you're looking for?
KOL-DON-TON
Impossible.
DOCTOR
I'm very resourceful. You're here to find Ririnax the Ravenous. Wanted for accounts of slaughter and devastation on at least 27 different registered planets, and recently, escaped convict.
KOL-DON-TON
Where did you obtain this information?
DOCTOR
That's not important, the important thing is, I'm going to help you find him.
KOL-DON-TON
Judoon have no need of assistance.
DOCTOR
Would it help you to know where he's hiding?
Kol-Don-Ton huffs out of his nose in interest, almost like excitement.
DOCTOR
Yeah, that got your attention, didn't it?
KOL-DON-TON
You know where the fugitive is located?
DOCTOR
Indeed I do. He's got my friend with him. I need to make sure she's safe. And in the meantime, you can capture Ririnax and we can both be on our merry ways.
He looks to his squad for a moment, considering. The Doctor looks nervous as he does so.
KOL-DON-TON
These terms are acceptable...
DOCTOR
Brilliant! Let's be off then.
KOL-DON-TON
Under one condition.
DOCTOR
Oh?
KOL-DON-TON
We will monitor you, and you will not take any action without our permission.
DOCTOR
But what if my friend's in danger, what if I need to help her?
KOL-DON-TON
We are well equipped to deal with anything related to Ririnax. Now, you will take us to the fugitive.
He flashes his gun, and the Doctor stumbles back anxiously.
DOCTOR
Alright, alright, keep your horn on. This way.
The Doctor leads the Judoon squad down the streets.
18 INT. ABANDONED BUILDING - NIGHT
Clara looks at Ririnax quizzically.
CLARA
Why are the Judoon after you?
RIRINAX
They think I'm a criminal.
CLARA
And you're not?
RIRINAX
Of course I'm not. Do I look like a mass murdering psychopath?
CLARA
I dunno. I've never seen a mass murdering psychopath in person before. Aside from Daleks.
RIRINAX
Yeah, and you still haven't. You can trust me. I just need you to take me with you on your ship. The blue box thing.
CLARA
The TARDIS?
RIRINAX
If that's what it's called. I've never seen anything like it.
CLARA
I don't think anyone has.
RIRINAX
But whatever it is, I bet the Judoon haven't got a chance of catching it if we get away.
CLARA
Okay. Like I said before, I've got a friend. He's called the Doctor. If we can find him, then he can help us. He's the one who can fly the TARDIS, so he's the one you want to speak to.
RIRINAX
Okay. Thank you.
CLARA
Don't thank me yet. We're still stuck in here.
RIRINAX
Looks like the Judoon are just finishing up in this area. If we wait just a few more minutes, we can make our move.
CLARA
Let's just hope we can find the Doctor before they can find us.
19 EXT. VORODIN MARKET - NIGHT
The Doctor and the Judoon squad walk through the ruins of the marketplace.
DOCTOR
Was all this destruction really necessary?
KOL-DON-TON
We did what we must to catch the Fugitive.
DOCTOR
Yes, but isn't this a bit too far? I know Vorodin is hardly the friendliest of places in the galaxy... well, at least it wasn't supposed to be... but you didn't have to wreck it.
Kol-Don-Ton grunts in annoyance before storming up to the Doctor and pressing his face close against his.
KOL-DON-TON
You will not question our actions! You are here to assist in the capture of the Fugitive. If you continue to be defiant, you will be punished for insubordination.
DOCTOR
Uncooperative? I've just led you straight to your fugitive. He's inside there. Now if we want to catch him and save my friend, we've got to work together as a team. And I don't appreciate my teammates being rude to me.
KOL-DON-TON
We are here to capture the Fugitive, the status of your friend is irrelevant.
DOCTOR
It's relevant to me. If you lay one finger on her…
KOL-DON-TON
You have been issued one official warning, do not provoke me again!
DOCTOR
I'm not putting up with this anymore, I'm going in there and I'm going to do the job myself. If you would like to accompany me to do so, feel free to.
The Doctor storms off into the building. Kol-Don-Ton grunts, his eyebrows furrowing in anger, before stomping in after him. [Track 7 ends]
20 INT. ABANDONED BUILDING - NIGHT
Ririnax is back to peeking out of the window, while Clara is now standing, ready to go.
RIRINAX
Quick, get down!
Clara ducks down, behind the crate she was sat on.
CLARA
What is it?
RIRINAX
A Judoon squad just turned up. There's a guy with them.
CLARA
Guy? What guy?
RIRINAX
Dark floppy hair, purple clothes, currently arguing with the Judoon Captain. He looks like you, same species?
CLARA
Definitely not. But that's my friend.
RIRINAX
Whoever he is, he's led the Judoon straight to us.
CLARA
Why would he do that?
RIRINAX
I don't know, I've never met him! Quick, he's coming in. We need to hide.
They both find spots to hide. Clara finds a small copse of crates and hides within them all. There's a noise from outside; somebody entering the building. Clara sits in her spot nervous, trying to calm her breathing. But suddenly, from behind her, a shadow grows. She sees it, and realises someone is behind her, and yelps. She turns, revealing the figure to be the Doctor. He crouches down next to her, covering her mouth.
DOCTOR
Shush.
CLARA
Why should I? You've already found me.
DOCTOR
Yes but he hasn't, has he?
CLARA
Who?
DOCTOR
Ririnax. I assume that's who you're hiding from.
CLARA
What? No. I was hiding from you.
DOCTOR
Me?
CLARA
Yes! You brought the Judoon here, so I assumed you were trying to capture Ririnax.
DOCTOR
I was. We were. Why?
[Track 8: Cuddlefish]
CLARA
He's innocent.
DOCTOR
What?
CLARA
He's innocent!
DOCTOR
What are you…
Another sound, though this one much louder. Someone crashing their way into the building with no intention of being sneaky about it.
KOL-DON-TON
Locate the Fugitive and his accomplices. Execute on sight.
DOCTOR
Accomplices? We're not accomplices.
CLARA
We can worry about that later, we need to get back to the TARDIS.
She comes out from her hiding spot.
CLARA
Ririnax! We're getting out, come on!
A laser shot shoots by her head, but she ducks out of the way before it hits. Ririnax pokes his head out from his hiding spot, looking for where the Judoon are, as the squad piles into the room, guns all at the ready. He finds a clearing, and runs over to Clara, avoiding laser shots all the way there.
RIRINAX
You must be Clara's friend.
DOCTOR
We can do introductions later. Come on.
CLARA
How are we going to get out?
DOCTOR
The same way the intruder got in.
CLARA
Eh?
DOCTOR
Through the window! Come on!
He takes both their hands and they run towards the window.
DOCTOR
Geronimo!
The Doctor jumps through the window, with Clara and Ririnax following close behind.
21 EXT. VORODIN MARKET- NIGHT
As they recover, a barrage of laser fire shoots above them.
DOCTOR
Everybody okay?
CLARA
Just about!
DOCTOR
Excellent. This way then, you two. Don't go out of my sight.
They begin running through the streets, as the Judoon Captain walks up to the window and howls in anger. He takes a step back and leaps after the Doctor, running after them.
DOCTOR
A running Judoon? Well, there's a first time for everything!
RIRINAX
We can't outrun them! They've had special training, they can pursue criminals for hours without needing to breathe!
DOCTOR
In here!
They dive into another warehouse.
22 INT. WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
The trio enter the large room, stacked with barrels of random junk.
DOCTOR
What's this place, Ririnax?
RIRINAX
Pirates use it for smuggling, there's all sorts of tricks they use to hide goods.
DOCTOR
Like using mirrors!
The Doctor moves a mirror against the other wall, then gestures for the others to hide. The Judoon smashes through the wall they entered through, battering his armour a little. He snorts, seeing the hole in the reflection of the mirror. Once again, he begins to charge towards it, and the smashing of the glass disorients him. The three speed out of the warehouse whilst they have the chance, the Captain struggling to regain focus. [Track 8 ends]
23 INT. TARDIS
[Track 9: Torchbearer] The Doctor storms in, with Clara and Ririnax following close behind.
DOCTOR
So, what's the plan now?
CLARA
What do you mean 'what's the plan'? We've got to leave, let's go.
DOCTOR
Afraid we can't. The Judoon have set up an exclusion zone over the area, the TARDIS can't take off.
CLARA
Well, can't you just bypass it?
DOCTOR
Given two hours and a decent pair of nail clippers, I probably could. But first, I want to ask our friend Ririnax some questions.
RIRINAX
What about?
DOCTOR
About why the Judoon are so keen on tearing Vorodin apart. I've seen them chase criminals twice as deadly and destructive as you appear to be, but they've never destroyed this much to catch them. What's so special about you?
RIRINAX
I'd tell you. But I'm not sure you'd believe me.
CLARA
It's okay. The Judoon haven't got a cat in hell's chance of getting through those doors, so we've got all the time in the world. It's the least we can do to hear you out. Isn't it, Doctor?
DOCTOR (sighing)
I suppose.
RIRINAX
Thank you. The Shadow Proclamation's had control of this sector of the galaxy since before I was born. It's not a very lucrative sector of the galaxy, so more people tend to turn to petty crime to try and survive. I grew up here, so I was always surrounded by them. But as I grew up, I understood more and more about them. And their hypocrisy.
CLARA
Go on.
Ririnax nods slowly.
RIRINAX
So, the Proclamation believe strongly in deterrence; by punishing crimes harshly, they could discourage it. Naturally, the poorer areas are the worst affected. But whenever someone tried to question their punishments, they were suddenly silenced. They either disappeared or were hunted down by Judoon with criminal charges.
24 INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION
We see Ririnax dressed in a plain black uniform carrying papers through the corridors, whilst a voiceover of him recounting events from the TARDIS plays over the top.
RIRINAX (OC)
I eventually got myself into the Proclamation; only a small administration job, but it got me close enough to their databanks to expose them.
We see Ririnax approach a door, look around for anyone watching hum before he opens the door and enters. It looks like a server room, with great rows of machinery flashing and displaying reams of data. Ririnax goes over to a control terminal, a screen and keyboard set inside the wall.
RIRINAX (oc)
I hacked into their mainframe and sent all the records to Galactic Centre. Suddenly, I became Ririnax the Ravenous. Guilty of slaughter and devastation on at least 27 different planets.
25 INT. TARDIS
We flash back to the present.
CLARA
They made you a criminal to cover their tracks?
RIRINAX
Exactly. Suddenly, every law agency in the galaxy was after my head. But then they went too far. They started altering galactic databanks. They changed all records of Vorodin, my home, and made it out to be this horrible den full of criminals and arms dealers.
CLARA
So that's why the TARDIS was wrong about this place. Didn't anyone notice?
RIRINAX
They banned all space traffic to and from the planet. Eventually I was captured. I was put in Judoon custody awaiting trial.
26 INT. PROCLAMATION SHIP
Another flashback as Ririnax sits in a cell now in the grey jumpsuit he's still weaning.
RIRINAX (oc)
But as I was being transported back to the Proclamation, I saw my chance.
He looks outside through a metal grille in the door, then begins work on a control panel by the door.
RIRINAX (oc)
I knew my way around the Proclamation's security systems, so I was able to bypass the lock on my cell.
The cell door slides open, and he steps out. He runs through the ship's corridors until he reaches a bay with its walls lined with circular doors; presumably escape pods. Suddenly a loud alarm starts blaring through the ship.
RIRINAX (oc)
I managed to get away in an escape pod before they could put me back in.
Ririnax opens one of the doors, enters the pod, and begins operating the controls, launching it into space. [Track 9 ends]
27 INT. TARDIS
Flash back to the present.
RIRINAX
They chased me, but I managed to make it back here.
DOCTOR
Well, your story definitely seems to add up. I checked the TARDIS databanks, they haven't been updated since the Matrix was destroyed. Turns out they weren't as well protected as I thought. I'm sorry Ririnax.
RIRINAX
It's not your fault. I'm just glad you believe me. It's been so long since anybody has.
DOCTOR
We're here now. And we're going to put things right.
The Doctor once again starts running around the console. [Track 10: Romulans Arrive Pt. 1]
RIRINAX
How? What can you do?
DOCTOR
You say you grew up here, so you know the lay of the land, right?
RIRINAX
Right?
DOCTOR
Where's the tallest building?
Ririnax is confused, but the Doctor stands there, grinning like a puppy.
28 EXT. VORODIN SKY - NIGHT
Pan across the city towards a grand tower - City Hall.
29 INT. CITY HALL BELL TOWER - NIGHT
The doors swing open and the Doctor looks over at the view through the balcony.
DOCTOR
Yes, this will do nicely.
Clara pokes out behind him.
CLARA
Do nicely for what?
The Doctor takes out an advanced looking, but rather small television camera with what appear to be various kitchen utensils attached from his pocket.
DOCTOR
I've keyed this in to the Galactic Centre Broadcasting System, anything that this records will be broadcast across the galaxy. It can zoom in enough for you to get a nice and up close view of the Judoon being very over-enthusiastic with their work.
CLARA
We're shooting an expose. Are you sure this is gonna work?
DOCTOR
No idea, but it'll be fun to find out. Now get filming. Find as much nastiness as you can.
Clara works the camera. He bounds up to Ririnax.
DOCTOR
Now, I have a more important job for you.
RIRINAX
Really? What can I do?
DOCTOR
You said you managed to get into the Shadow Proclamation database.
RIRINAX
Yes.
DOCTOR
So now, you're going to do it again. Although this time, we're going to broadcast everything along the same channel as the camera. Not to Galactic Centre where it can be hidden and forgotten. We're making sure everybody knows what the Proclamation is doing.
RIRINAX
Right. I'll get to it.
DOCTOR
Good lad! Finish what you started.
The Doctor takes out more devices and begins to set up a laptop-like machine.
30 INT. SHADOW PROCLAMATION
The same control room from before, though this time in chaos, with several alarms flashing all at once, as servants desperately run around and operate controls. The entrance door slides open and the Shadow Architect enters.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
What is going on?
ALBINO SERVANT #1
It's the galactic broadcasts, Architect. They're streaming images directly from Vorodin.
We see on the screen a view of Vorodin from above, with the Judoon brutally shoving their way through citizens and shooting those who get in the way.
ALBINO SERVANT #2
Personal data streams across this sector are being flooded with information from our databanks.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Don't just stand there, do something, stop it!
ALBINO SERVANT #1
We're trying, The broadcast encryptions are beyond our capabilities.
ALBINO SERVANT #2
Galactic Centre are barraging our systems, they're threatening to move in on Vorodin and neutralise the Judoon fleet.
ALBINO SERVANT #1
What shall we do?
The Architect ponders for a minute, a mixture of fear and anger growing across her face.
SHADOW ARCHITECT
Tell them to retreat. Get them off of Vorodin.
The servant nods, and holds down a button in front of them.
ALBINO SERVANT #1
Contacting Judoon Justice Fleet. You are to retreat from Vorodin immediately. Abandon mission. Repeat. Retreat from Vorodin, abandon mission.
31 INT. CITY HALL BELL TOWER - NIGHT
Clara dangles from the balcony, watching as the Judoon realise what has just been broadcasted. An alert comes through the monitor.
RIRINAX
That's the retreat order. The Judoon are leaving.
CLARA
Sorry to burst your bubble, but they're staying put.
RIRINAX
What?
He runs up to the balcony and looks down.
32 EXT. VORODIN STREETS - NIGHT
The Judoon carry on with their work, though we can hear the order to retreat echoing in their helmets.
NYBO
Captain. We must move back…
KOL-DON-TON
No! The Fugitve must be eliminated. We must stay.
NYBO
...Yes, Captain.
The Judoon resume their destruction. [Track 10 ends]
33 INT. CITY HALL BELL TOWER - NIGHT
The Doctor frowns.
DOCTOR
They're disobeying orders. They don't want their secret to get out. That or they're too obsessed to stop now.
[Track 11: This Time There's Three Of Us 5:30 - 7:03]
RIRINAX
I know which one I'd put my money on. I've got to get down there. Rally the people, drive the Judoon away.
CLARA
Are you mad? You haven't got a chance, you'll be slaughtered.
DOCTOR
Not if you work together. A community spirit. Combine your talents, all of you. Your brains, your brawn, your loves, your hobbies, everything. Everything you sell, everything you work for. This is going to take all of your efforts but it'll stop the Judoon from pulling this off again. And maybe once you're done here, go to the Shadow Proclamation. You can do this. I believe in you.
Ririnax nods, running down the stairs.
34 EXT. VORODIN MARKETPLACE - NIGHT
The Judoon carry on firing at the people. Ririnax is stood in an alleyway. Before he steps out, he looks behind him at Clara and the Doctor on the balcony back at City Hall. They both nod encouragingly, and he nods back, before turning, letting out a big breath, clenching his fists and emerging. He steps out, and looks around. He finds a rock in the floor among the debris, and picks it up. Looking around, he finds one of the confused Judoon, and throws the rock towards it.
RIRINAX
You have no right to be here. Get off our planet!
He turns behind him, to see more people emerging from hiding, and beckons them to join him. They come out, and begin shouting alongside him, and marching against the Judoon.
RIRINAX
Use everything we can against them!
The people pick up rocks and throw them at the Judoon. They nab gear from the stalls and use it on them, and the police are overwhelmed. They try to fire their guns but suddenly their weapons suddenly stop working. As they stand confused, trying to get them to work again, the people continue to revolt against them.
35 INT. CITY HALL BELL TOWER - NIGHT
The Doctor and Clara watch the Judoon being driven back. Then, a bleep comes from the laptop and a video link opens up to an older man in a uniform with the insignia for 'Galactic Centre' printed on. The Doctor runs round to answer it.
DOCTOR
Hello, yes. You must be Galactic Centre then. Yes, the database leak came from here, yes it is genuine, here's the decryption logs to prove it.
He presses some buttons in front of him while the man on screen looks bewildered.
DOCTOR
And yes, that footage was genuine, you can run through any screen proofing software you like. Can't talk now, but thank you for your cooperation, bye now!
The man lets out a startle, but the Doctor turns the screen off before he can answer. [Track 11 ends] The pair beam. [Track 12: Forgetting 1:04 - 1:45]
CLARA
I think that makes up for it.
DOCTOR
Makes up for what?
CLARA
Waking me up with that stupid alarm.
DOCTOR
Ah, yes. Sorry about that. I'll get rid of it later.
CLARA
What do you mean later? We're not doing anything now, you've got plenty of time.
DOCTOR
Oh Clara, I thought you would have learned by now. All of time and space, someone out there still needs help.
CLARA
Well, when you put it like that…
DOCTOR
Shall we?
CLARA
Yes!
They run off down the stairs. Pan back to the markets of Vorodin, where the sounds of protests are echoing across the city. [Track 12 ends]
