1 INT. BRIDGE - NIGHT
[Track 1: They Are Everywhere] There are fires all around a crashed spaceship. Many corpses lay on the floor, their flesh melting from the flames - These corpses are alien warriors. Beside the control panels is the Master, his head bleeding from the crash. He wakes up, and a group of people are towering over him. One of them is a tall, imposing woman.
MASTER
Wha...Who are you? What happened?
?
Welcome. We see you're going to be a great asset to us.
The Master looks confused. He stands up.
MASTER
Would you care to tell me who you are?
?
Your new employers.
MASTER
I think you've got it wrong. No one employs me.
?
I'm afraid you don't have a choice, Master.
MASTER
How do you know me?
?
We know a great many things about you. Such as the way you just took on escaped a legion of Mandeville Warriors - impressive - but what we're more interested in, is your affiliation with the Time Lord known as the Doctor.
The Master scowls.
?
We need your help to defeat the threat he poses.
His scowl disappears.
?
Will you sign the Contract?
He grins.
Many years later...
2 EXT. WASTELAND - NIGHT
Pan across the surface of the planet. Sludge, dying tufts of grass and rocks carve craters and huge trenches into the ground, which is almost lifeless and barren. Above, a collection of dark mud clouds hang low in the sky, thundering intimidatingly. Upon the mountains, remnants of a long lost war litter the earth - smoke and fog, shrapnel, pieces of barbed wire, smouldering fires, dropped bullets and landmines - but how lost is the war really?
In one of the large valleys, a group of humanoids lie flat in a ditch. They're dressed in heavy, camouflaged combat gear, with guns slung over their shoulders and thick walking boots wedged firmly into the ground. One of the humanoids, a teenage boy, is grunting and wincing as he bleeds out from a great wound in his abdomen. An older woman, in her late 40s, pins him down with an outstretched arm, revealing three stripes on her armour.
ZAYIM
How many times do I have to tell you? Keep quiet.
TAYLOR
You try shutting up with a piece of your stomach ripped out!
A distant howl calls out, and they all turn in the direction of the noise.
ZAYIM
They've got our scent. Ammo check.
They all read a display on their guns, then look at each other - from the expression on their faces, it's obvious that it isn't good news.
ZAYIM
Right, okay. We've got to keep moving anyway.
TAYLOR
I- I can't.
ZAYIM
We've got no choice.
TAYLOR
I'm telling you, I can't!
ZAYIM
Fine. Then we head on without you.
JENDO
Captain, you can't be serious-
TAYLOR
No, she's right. I'll only slow you down. Besides, even if I got back to base, the surgery I'd need would- Agh- I wouldn't be able to digest anything, I'd starve. That is, if I didn't bleed out before I got the surgery.
ZAYIM
Then we go on. Good man, Taylor.
Zayim moves her position to lie on her front, almost as if she's a hunter, ready to pounce on her prey. But she knows full well that it's the other way around. She holds her hand up, as the rest of her squadron eagerly await her command. She throws her hand forward, leaping out and crawling across the terrain, aside from Taylor. They make their way slowly across the battlefield, hiding behind sandbags and in pits.
JENDO
I can't believe we just- just abandoned him!
ZAYIM
You heard him, he'd slow us down. There was nothing we could do for him. Either we all died or he sacrificed himself and we lived to fight in his honour.
JENDO
He was nineteen years old.
ZAYIM
Can we talk about this later? Our focus is to get back now.
A chilling scream silences them. Jendo's face falls, as do the other soldiers.
ZAYIM
He bought us time. He may have saved our lives.
LUKE
But he wasn't far behind, so neither are they.
ZAYIM
Our base is just up there, see?
She points to a cliff edge.
LUKE
And they can climb faster than us. I knew this was a pointless assault. This is suicide!
ZAYIM
What do you want us to do now? All of you, honestly. Tell me what we should do!
Zayim stares at them, angrily, as they remain silent.
ZAYIM
Exactly. We get back to base, live to fight another day. The quickest way is by climbing up. If anyone has a problem with it, you can stay here and do whatever you want.
Zayim goes to make her way to the wall, but stops as she hears a whisper in the wind, before a cry of the wind - obviously familiar to all of them.
JENDO
That's-
LUKE
It could be a trick, it's got to be.
ZAYIM
No, look.
The TARDIS materialises behind them - the light illuminating the environment around them, revealing wolf-like silhouettes closing in. Zayim starts to rush to the box.
JENDO
Captain, what are you doing?!
ZAYIM
It's them. We're not letting the enemy get their hands on them.
The TARDIS doors swing open, and Clara's head pops out.
CLARA
Ew, grim weather. Doesn't look very Italian to me-
As Clara steps out, she's pinned down by one of the wolves - it has certain humanoid features, its teeth baring, hulking and slobbering all over her - similar to a werewolf. She screams, drawing the Doctor out. Before he can help her, the soldiers pull him back, giving him just enough time to shut the TARDIS door behind him.
DOCTOR
Clara!
A high pitched wail causes the wolf to retreat. She picks herself up, before a group of Sontarans kidnap her.
CLARA
No! Get off me! I said get off!
DOCTOR
Let her go!
Pan out of the TARDIS in the middle and the two time travellers being dragged in different directions. [Track 1 ends]
ROLL TITLES
3 INT. RESISTANCE BASE - NIGHT
[Track 2: Zygon In The Painting] The Doctor is tied up in a chair in a large warehouse-like room, with soldiers dotted about, planning strategies cleaning their weapons. The concrete floor is covered in rubble and broken glass, with bunk beds and army equipment being decorated around the mess, such as gun racks and computers hanging off the corrugated metal walls . In the centre of the room, there's a large table with a map on top, showing off the battlefield, with the two bases on opposite sides and the unpredictable landscape.
DOCTOR
Wow, you really make your guests feel at home!
ZAYIM
Who are you? What are you doing here? What's that box thing?
DOCTOR
I counted three questions in four seconds. Super keen, aren't you?
ZAYIM
Who are you?
DOCTOR
I'm the Doctor.
ZAYIM
Knew it. He's here.
DOCTOR
You expected me?
LUKE
You're the entire reason we're at war.
DOCTOR
Oh - sorry. Not exactly sure what's going on, but that's the problem with time travellers, not everything happens in the correct order for us!
ZAYIM
Us. You mean your friend.
DOCTOR
Clara. That was Sontarans who took her, wasn't it? Sontarans and Lupein? Tell me, what are you guys doing sharing a planet with Sontarans?
GORDE
Sharing? Are you an idiot?
DOCTOR
Fighting, I get it. Explains the guns, I guess. Who are you?
ZAYIM
We're the Taulian Resistance.
DOCTOR
Ugh, that's a bit of a dull name, isn't it? "The Taulian Resistance". Resisting what? Sontaran occupation?
ZAYIM
The Contract. Believe it or not, those Sontarans aren't in charge here.
DOCTOR
My interest is piqued.
JENDO
This could very well still be a trap.
ZAYIM
You're right. Where are you from?
DOCTOR
Just from around, you know…
ZAYIM
What planet?!
DOCTOR
Gallifrey.
ZAYIM
Time Lord?
Jendo goes to speak, but Zayim stops her.
ZAYIM
Don't, I already know. What's a Time Lord doing here?
DOCTOR
I told you, I got here in the blue box. Well, actually I was aiming for the 15th century, we were going to meet Leonardo da Vinci with my helicopter blueprints. You don't think he thought them up himself, did you?
ZAYIM
This is getting us nowhere. He could be making this up. We need tangible proof.
DOCTOR
Wish I could help, but I need to get my friend back.
ZAYIM
Tough, she's with the Sontarans now.
DOCTOR
Well, then. You're gonna help me get her back.
He stares intensely. [Track 2 ends]
4 INT. SONTARAN CELL - NIGHT
[Track 3: The Final Days of Earth] Clara is trapped in a dungeon-like room with a thick purple glow. One wall is made of glass, separating her from the rest of the jail. She bangs on it.
CLARA
Let me out of here! I swear to god, once I'm free you will have HELL TO PAY!
She yells in frustration, hitting the glass one more time, then turning away. A Sontaran steps into view on the other side of the glass, slotting his hand into a panel on the side, causing the wall to slide up. She spins back around, shocked.
SONTARAN
You will follow me.
He brandishes his weapon at her, and she nods, stepping forward and following the clone, as she acknowledges the presence of another Sontaran, without a helmet, looking like a troll - by the first Sontaran's reaction, the striking of his breast, she can tell he's a superior rank.
SKITT
The prisoner from the blue box. Are we sure it's the Doctor?
SONTARAN
Yes, sir.
CLARA
Huh? I'm not the Doctor.
Skitt looks at the Sontaran.
SONTARAN
...No, sir.
SKITT
Gah! What do you mean, you're not the Doctor?
CLARA
Clara Oswald. Human. I just travel with the Doctor. Hi.
She smiles meekly. Skitt hesitates for a moment, unsure on what to do with the newly discovered information, then straightens himself.
SKITT
Well, if you travel with the Doctor, you may still be of use to us. Move on.
They walk on.
5 INT. SONTARAN CORRIDOR - NIGHT
The two Sontarans escort Clara along the corridor, in a similar design to the jail cell, but in a cleaner fashion, and a lot more tailored to the noblest warrior race.
CLARA
Who are you?
SKITT
I am Field Major Skitt of the Seventh Sontaran Strike Squad.
CLARA
Nice to meet you, I don't suppose? You know, I've met Sontarans before.
Skitt stops and turns to Clara.
SKITT
You have encountered us before and lived?
CLARA
Yeah, just the one. He was a lot nicer than you. Bit weird and aggressive but not… warmongering?
He recoils.
SKITT
A vermin creature. A dishonour to our troops.
Shaking his head, he continues on down the corridor, before stopping outside a door, and ushering Clara inside.
6 INT. STORAGE UNIT - NIGHT
They enter a dark hall, with a few rooms splitting off the side Clara looks through a small window, and sees a few of the Lupein creatures in a cell similar to the one she was in earlier.
CLARA
What are they?
SKITT
The Lupein. Basic primal race, but good at hunting. They've been presented to us as a gift.
CLARA
A gift?
SKITT
From our sponsors.
CLARA
Who are your sponsors?
Skitt reveals a toothy grin.
SKITT
The Contract. We're going to kill your friend the Doctor.
The lights turn on, revealing the size of the hall - so big that Clara can barely see the end - with dozens, if not hundreds of doors built in, each one holding a cell filled to the brim with different creatures - in one is a room full of Weevils, another has Zarbi, another has Ood, another has Macra - Clara is overwhelmed. Skitt types into a keypad beside one of the doors, then fits his hand into a panel below it.
CLARA
What are you doing, are you opening it?
SKITT
Correct.
Skitt and the Sontaran exit the hall and lock it as the door slowly opens. Clara stumbles back as a Silent creeps out, in a flowing, black robe, menacingly advancing on her. [Track 3 ends]
7 INT. RESISTANCE BASE - NIGHT
[Track 4: Bedroom Talk] Zayim is standing by a screen with a diagram of a galaxy on it. The Doctor has been untied and approaches it.
ZAYIM
The Contract spans this entire galaxy. No-one's quite sure where it came from, but anyone who seems to pass through this region of space suddenly just...ends up in their service.
DOCTOR
So the Sontarans?
ZAYIM
They were on their way to colonise the Newity Constellation. The Lizogar are the dominant life forms there.
DOCTOR
I know them, experts in gene splicing. Sorry to interrupt, but how is this anything to do with getting Clara back?
ZAYIM
For the last time, Doctor. Your friend's probably dead by now. We're not going in for her.
He sighs.
DOCTOR
Go on.
ZAYIM
The Sontarans were attempting to build breeding colonies on each planet of the Newity Constellation. Thousands upon thousands of them. They were this close to signing off on their deal, it would've given them the advantage to end their Great War, then poof. They end up here.
DOCTOR
They wouldn't willingly disobey direct orders, so something's changed. They learned of something that's far more important than beating the Rutans. And whatever it is, it can't be good.
He strokes his chin, deep in thought.
DOCTOR
What does the Contract want?
ZAYIM
You don't know?
DOCTOR
Wouldn't be asking if I did.
ZAYIM
You. You pose a threat to them - they think that gods shouldn't exist.
DOCTOR
I'm not a God.
ZAYIM
You act like one. The immortal traveller, interfering in matters across the Universe, against the law of the Time Lords. I don't blame the Time Lords for banning that - no-one should have the power of a God.
DOCTOR
I don't.
ZAYIM
But you do. It's believed that you created a weapon that only you can use - and when the time comes, you'll be the one to choose who to use it on. And it'll wipe the enemy of the Time Lord's out.
DOCTOR
I don't use weapons.
ZAYIM
That's what the legend says, and that's why we're fighting for it. If the Contract gets that weapon, they'll surely be able to hijack it and have unbelievable power over the Universe.
DOCTOR
And so will you if you find it.
ZAYIM
At least a tyrannical force won't be in control.
DOCTOR
And what would you do with that weapon if you had it?
ZAYIM
Destroy the Contract.
DOCTOR
So what makes you better than them?
ZAYIM
What gives you the right to judge us, Doctor? You say you're not a God, but here you are, claiming you're better than us.
DOCTOR
I'm not-
ZAYIM
If the Contract gets destroyed, so many people will be able to live free from their shadow. I shall have no regrets in ensuring that, and you certainly cannot change my mind.
She storms off. [Track 4 ends]
8 INT. STORAGE UNIT - NIGHT
Clara tries to pull open the locked door, hearing a faint clicking behind her. Slowly, she looks behind her, and jumps back as she sees a few Silence, in flowing, black robes. [Track 5: The Message]
CLARA
Wha-?
SILENT
More…
CLARA
Huh?
SILENT
More…!
CLARA
More what?
SILENT
Confess more!
CLARA
I haven't confessed anything yet… Have I?
She thinks for a moment.
CUT TO:
One of the Silence is right in front of her, its arm outstretched.
CLARA
My name is Clara Oswald! I came here with the Doctor!
CUT TO:
She realises.
CLARA
How did I forget that? ...Did you make me forget?
SILENT
Confess!
CLARA
What do you want from me?
SILENT
Why did you come? Tell us why you came.
Clara turns back around, trying to open the locked door, before hesitating for a moment. She starts pressing the buttons on the side.
CLARA
We wanted to meet Leonardo Da Vinci, but came here by mistake… Why did I say that?
She hears a faint clicking, then looks behind her, jumping back as she sees a few Silence in flowing, black robes.
CLARA
Wha-? Where did you come from?
SILENT
Confess!
CLARA
I've… How much have I already said? What have I told you?
SILENT
What do you know of the Doctor's demise?
CLARA
You should know, since you're the ones who want to kill him!
SILENT
What do you know of the Doctor's demise?
CLARA
Why do you want to know?!
SILENT
Confess!
CLARA
No!
One stretches out its arm, and Clara dodges under it, running backwards down the corridor, keeping her gaze fixed on them.
CLARA
So, I can only remember you if I can see you, right? Clever, but I'll just have to keep my eye on you. I'm great at staring contests - It's my party trick. Once the Doctor's introduced you to Weeping Angels, you stop blinking altogether.
She giggles. The Silents hiss.
CLARA
You want me to talk? Here I am, talking. Just not about what you want. Now what are you going to do?
SILENT
What do you know of the Doctor's demise?
CLARA
Not telling you.
SILENT
Confess…
CLARA
Make me.
SILENT
Confess!
CLARA
Make me!
[Track 5 ends] The Silence stop as the doors open, as a few Sontarans enter - including Skitt and another commanding Sontaran, removing his helmet to reveal that identical grotesque face. [Track 6: The War Room]
TRAGG
This is her?
SKITT
Yes, sir.
Tragg turns to one of his troops.
TRAGG
Check the full recordings - find out what the Silence got from her.
The Sontaran thumps his breast, before marching out, as the Silence return to their cell. Tragg approaches Clara, stroking her cheek.
TRAGG
We were monitoring you from outside. You are a very resilient female.
CLARA
Don't touch me!
She smacks his hand away, which obviously enrages him. He thrusts her against the wall.
TRAGG
You are my property. You will do as I say!
CLARA
Haha, I don't think so.
TRAGG
Oh, I will have great pleasure breaking your spirit. It shall be far more honourable than any battle I can participate in.
SKITT
Group Marshal Tragg - From what we know of our enemy, the Doctor will be preparing an assault to rescue his friend.
He loosens his grip on her.
TRAGG
Of course. We should be ready. Return the prisoner to her cell - I'll deal with her later. And have a firing squad on standby.
CLARA
Eh? Firing squad?!
The Sontarans push Clara along.
TRAGG
Have you made a report to the Contract yet?
SKITT
No, sir.
TRAGG
I shall do that now. I'm sure they will respond with orders almost immediately, but we should still initiate defensive maneuvers.
SKITT
Defense?
TRAGG
It is not my preferred choice either, but they want the Doctor alive. Only he can use this weapon.
SKITT
Why do we obey them, sir?
TRAGG
You know full well why. The Doctor has opposed us time and time again. Without his influence on the Universe, we may be able to crush the Rutan Host once and for all.
SKITT
Then why don't we just kill him? We have the resources.
TRAGG
The Contract has supported us in this war, so we answer to their strategies.
SKITT
You may outrank me, sir, but I am a Field Major, almost promoted to Battle Major. I command our troops out on the battlefield, in an offensive. We are not bred for… patience.
TRAGG
You're right, Skitt. I do outrank you. Now cease this treachery or you will join our prisoner on the firing line. Is that clear?
SKITT
Yes, sir.
Skitt scowls at Tragg as he strides back into the hallway. [Track 6 ends]
9 INT. RESISTANCE BASE - NIGHT
[Track 7: Whose Enigma] Zayim is conversing with the other troops, working on new tactics, whilst the Doctor sits in a chair to the side, staring into the middle distance intently. Jendo walks over, smiling softly and pulling up a chair beside him.
JENDO
Hi.
The Doctor ignores him.
JENDO
I, uh… I brought you some food.
He holds out a tray with some mush, offering it to the Doctor, which he continues to disregard.
JENDO
I know it's not much, but I mean, we're in a war. Knowing you, you probably dine on much richer things, right? You being a Time Lord and all. Actually, what do Time Lords eat?
The Doctor glares at Jendo, and he stops rambling.
JENDO
Sorry. Thinking about the girl?
Scoffing, the Doctor looks away.
DOCTOR
Was it that obvious?
JENDO
I'm sorry about the Captain, she only cares about winning the war, no matter the cost to our lives. It's stressful, but efficient. If it wasn't for her brutality, the Sontarans would've wiped us out years ago. Who was she?
DOCTOR
Clara Oswald. My best friend. When I took her away in the TARDIS to show her the stars, I vowed to look after her and make sure I always got her home safely. I've lost so many friends, I hoped… I hoped there would be one who would stick around by the end. I hoped she'd be the... I've lived a long life. So many battles, so many people have come and gone. And I remember every single moment. Every joy, every heartbreak, every victory, every defeat, every wonder and I wonder… when does it all stop?
Jendo places a reassuring hand on the Doctor's shoulder.
JENDO
I'm sorry for your loss. I tried to convince Zayim, but she's pretty hardline. But, like I said, she's a good Captain when it comes to the grand scale of things. It's times like these I remember something my old man used to say, you won't get far in this war with fair play. You know what the Sontarans are like. Actually, that's probably not helping, considering they...
He looks confused, then turns to Jendo.
DOCTOR
They what?
JENDO
You… you know what.
DOCTOR
Do I? Because we've been to hell and back. And if I know one thing about her, I know that she won't go down without a fight.
He stands up and storms over to Zayim.
DOCTOR
You alright, soldiers? At ease!
The Doctor starts to fiddle with the controls, which makes Zayim cross her arms and raise an eyebrow.
ZAYIM
Doctor, what are you doing?
DOCTOR
Upgrading your tech. Very outdated for a war, although I don't blame you - use whatever you can get your hands on. And you've done very well to take on the Sontarans for as long as you have, but you need something more.
The Doctor spins round and turns on the map, showing a 3-D model of a futuristic dome, with huge spires on the sides, like watch-towers.
DOCTOR
Look at that! Beautifully rendered, if I do say so myself.
ZAYIM
That's- that's the Sontaran base! How'd you get those plans?
DOCTOR
Not a plan, it's a live feed. Satellite imaging; just hacked into the outer surface of the Sontaran firewalls, not too shabby for a man with a screwdriver.
Zayim grins as she revels in the sight of her enemy's base. The Doctor wanders to the centre of the hall.
GORDE
Ooh, I don't like you smiling.
DOCTOR
You should smile! It's good, the more information we have on the Sontarans, the easier it will be for your upcoming assault.
ZAYIM
Assault?
DOCTOR
Yep! We're going out to save Clara.
ZAYIM
Doctor, how many times? No.
DOCTOR
I just helped you out big time, your turn to do a favour for me.
ZAYIM
We saved your life out there.
DOCTOR
You saved your own life because if the Sontarans got their hands on me, it'd be the end of everything.
ZAYIM
Not really convincing me to let you go to their base now. Look, I appreciate you doing this for us, but I'm sorry, your friend is dead.
DOCTOR
You don't know Clara - if anything, she's used her connection to me to keep her alive until we come and get her.
ZAYIM
Which we're not.
DOCTOR
Fine, you leave me no choice.
He whips out his sonic screwdriver, throwing it into the air and catching it, before using it on a big screen behind him. The number 60:00 flashes on, then turns to 59:59, 59:58, and so on.
ZAYIM
Wha-
SAI
That… that can't be. Is that-?
KIRA
He's set off the self-destruct!
Outcries from the soldiers.
DOCTOR
Oops, did I? I thought it was the oven timer.
ZAYIM
This isn't a joke!
DOCTOR
You're right, it's not. It's a shame how often I have to resort to this, but it works.
ZAYIM
Turn it off! I said, turn it off!
DOCTOR
No. Here's how I see it. Clara's in the heart of a vast empire that's after me. From here, we've got two choices. Either let us all die, stopping the Contract from ever getting this weapon, or help me find Clara, and only by my side will I find this weapon and even consider using it against them. But that's not a likely option, I'll probably just destroy it.
ZAYIM
Are you insane?
DOCTOR
Totally. I'm a Time Lord, it's how we roll.
Zayim snatches the sonic screwdriver.
ZAYIM
How does this damn thing work?
DOCTOR
Nice try. Isomorphic filter, testing it out. Too many people were using it - imagine stealing a screwdriver! Only I can turn that countdown off.
The hall is engulfed in chaos and yelling.
DOCTOR
It's your own fault for installing a self-destruct. And one of only 60 minutes.
ZAYIM
Stop this now!
DOCTOR
Only when Clara's here to see me stop it. Your choice, Captain.
Beat.
ZAYIM
Get that countermand code immediately.
The Doctor points the sonic screwdriver at the computer and it whirrs away with the green glow.
GORDE
I can't - he's locked the subframe!
ZAYIM
You've done what?
DOCTOR
You wanted me to stop kidding about? Well, here you go. Don't like it? Shame.
ZAYIM
Doctor!
DOCTOR
Captain! You're running out of time, so are we going to stand about, arguing, or are we going on a rescue mission?
Zayim's face turns sour and aggressive, then nods.
ZAYIM
It seems we have no choice.
She grimaces, as the Doctor straightens his jacket and strides off. [Track 7 ends]
10 INT. SONTARAN BASE CONTROL - NIGHT
[Track 8: A Machine That Makes Machines] Tragg marches into a large purple room filled to the brim with Sontarans and technology monitoring the planet, the base, their weaponry and more. He admires it, his helmet still off. A Sontaran trooper turns to him.
SONTARAN
Sir - the audio link is open.
TRAGG
Very good. I shall make my report. I am not to be disturbed.
The Sontaran makes the salute, striking his chest, then guarding the booth that Tragg enters.
11 INT. TELECOM ROOM - NIGHT
Tragg sits on a small chair - the room is designed similarly to a Sontaran pod, but in more of a box shape. The screen in front of Tragg switches on, with an abstract design flashing on, responding whenever a sound emerges from the speaker above it. Someone talks from the other side; it's a distorted voice, but still rather recognisable as the person who spoke to the Master.
?
Group Marshal Tragg. What is your report?
TRAGG
Excellent news, sir - the Doctor has arrived.
?
Are you sure it's him?
TRAGG
Yes, sir. We have his companion in custody. She has been interrogated.
?
And?
TRAGG
It seems the Doctor is unaware of our movements so far. He is not as intelligent as we predicted.
?
Do not underestimate him, Tragg. That is where your people have failed before.
Tragg turns sullen.
?
What else does he know?
TRAGG
It would appear that he has visited this place before - a long time in its future. The female claimed that a great battle had transpired, and had killed the Time Lord.
?
What about the weapon?
TRAGG
She has no knowledge of it.
Beat.
TRAGG
What do you suppose his death signifies? Are we successful?
?
His destiny is fixed. He will die, and he cannot change that fact.
TRAGG
Perhaps his destiny is what defeated your previous efforts. It is beneficial to us now, with the weapon a target.
?
Hmm. Where is the Time Lord now?
TRAGG
He… he is with the Resistance.
?
WHAT?!
The excessive volume almost breaks the speaker.
TRAGG
If I can explain-
?
You must retrieve him - NOW, Tragg. Unless your usefulness has expired. And you know what happens then. I expect a positive development from your report by dawn.
The screen fades away, leaving Tragg silent and in darkness. He checks to see that the door is still locked shut, before wearing a look of dread, before regaining his composure and regaining his status as a Sontaran.
12 INT. SONTARAN BASE CONTROL - NIGHT
Tragg exits, his spine straight, and ready for war.
TRAGG
Field Major Skitt! You will prepare the troops. We will execute the female, then crush the Resistance! Every last one of them!
Spit flies everywhere as he yells his command.
SKITT
We'll be ready, sir!
Skitt, like an excitable puppy, approaches a communicator built into the console in the middle of the room and begins to bark orders.
13 INT. SONTARAN CELL - NIGHT
Clara hears the Sontarans massing for war. She takes out her phone, but she sees that the signal has been jammed and sighs. She climbs up to the small window, seeing nothing but smoke outside. She tries to open it, but knows even she won't be able to fit through there.
14 INT. RESISTANCE BASE - NIGHT
Zayim is planning a strategy, with all the soldiers huddled around her. The Doctor is to the side, his head throbbing. Slowly, he staggers and collapses.
15 EXT. FOREST - EVENING
He lands on a bed of fallen leaves, his clothes now covered in dirt. He tries to stand up, but he seems glued to the floor.
DOCTOR
...Eh?
He turns around, staring up to a luscious forest, filled with beautiful trees of different shapes, colours and sizes - like a firework lighting the air. Animals prosper. Suddenly, a bright white stream of light pokes out from the ground, and pulls the Doctor down, surrounding his hand.
DOCTOR
What are you doing? Get off!
END
You are our target. YOU ARE OUR TARGET!
An accumulation of voices scream in his head, causing him to wince. He fights to free himself from the beam of light, but fails to get out of its grip. Suddenly, the world around him is convulsed in flames and destruction, as bombs fall and scuff the dirt, until all that is left is cinders and dust - with war raging all around. The Doctor, once again, tries to pick himself up, but realises he can only escape the carnage by crawling across the wartorn floor.
An air raid siren blares, as the Doctor looks over his shoulder to see a basic army, wearing gas masks, just poking their heads out of small man-made trenches. At intervals across the trench, they release a gas, pouring out onto the battlefield. Their enemy - a group of dark, cat-like creatures, who are obviously poorly equipped - succumb to the gas and decay quickly, their corpses left rotting.
Thunder slams, as large vessels enter the atmosphere, and fire lightning strikes onto the surface, ripping it apart and forming huge valley-like craters.
Futuristic laser bolts speed across the battlefield, as another species - arthropods with humanoid arms, mow down their enemy. The Doctor watches in horror as all these wars unfold before him.
A strange plant grows to almost fifty feet, it's vines reaching out and snatching soldiers from the ground and suffocating them, before it goes for the Doctor. With one final glance back to the combat zone, he sees a troop of Sontarans, raising their guns, about to execute Clara. He screams out, writhing in agony-
16 INT. RESISTANCE BASE - NIGHT
Zayim pulls the Doctor up off the dirty floor, and he awakes, dazed and disoriented. [Track 8 ends] She stares at him, expecting an answer, but his legs buckle and he falls back onto a chair. [Track 9: The Dream of Cyberia]
DOCTOR
Woah- Hey!
ZAYIM
Steady, now. What happened?
GORDE
Was it another vision strike?
DOCTOR
...A vision strike?
ZAYIM
Chop, chop, everyone, we need to reassemble and fast! All those affected, get to the rehabilitation suite and hydrate yourselves! Our offensive hasn't been cancelled, we've only got 45 minutes left! Sai, get up!
The Doctor throws his arm around Zayim, and together they make their way back to the map table.
DOCTOR
What's a vision strike?
ZAYIM
An effect of this planet. It's been through so many wars, it's believed that it's impacted the environment in some way. Randomly, some people are susceptible to getting visions of the planet - different aspects of it. No-one's ever reacted as violently as you have, though.
DOCTOR
Why?
ZAYIM
Why what?
DOCTOR
Why have there been so many wars?
ZAYIM
I dun- I don't know.
DOCTOR
Perhaps there's something that this planet has on someone. But that doesn't make sense, cos the vision I saw was of a beautiful world, it was so rich in fauna, and- and- and wildlife. Where did it all go wrong?
ZAYIM
Something to do with the weapon?
DOCTOR
Has to be. It doesn't matter for now. We're running out of time, we can think about it when Clara's safe and sound.
ZAYIM
You're right! Everyone, we're moving out in five minutes! Arm yourselves, and stay vigilant! The Sontarans have his friend, so they know the Doctor, so they'll know we're coming.
The Doctor focuses on the model of the Sontaran base. [Track 9 ends]
17 INT. SONTARAN CELL - NIGHT
The prison cell opens, and two Sontarans are on the other side.
SONTARAN
You will come with us.
They clutch Clara's arms, and pull her out.
18 EXT. SONTARAN TERRITORY - NIGHT
[Track 10: Up The Shard] The main doors slide open, and immediately Clara begins to cough as she sets foot in the toxic atmosphere - the Sontarans, however, are unfazed. They drag her to one of the outer walls of the dome, which has scorch marks on it - obviously from previous executions. In front of her is a firing squad, all eager to make the kill shot to add to their collection. They tie her up to a pole on the wall, her arms suspended in the air. She squirms.
CLARA
You don't need to do this! I can help you, I've got valuable information!
SKITT
See how she betrays so easily. Begging for her life in exchange for the damnation of her comrades. A sign of weakness.
Skitt smacks Clara, and she growls.
CLARA
Just tell me what you need to know!
SKITT
Do you really think I am that naive? This is a ploy to get information out of me. No rescues this time, human scum. We already have everything we need from you.
CLARA
But I haven't told you anything!
SKITT
That you can remember.
Clara frowns.
CLARA
What does that mean?
SKITT
The Contract extended to the Papal Mainframe. They deliver allies to our cause to assist in the killing of the Time Lord.
CLARA
Why do you want to kill the Doctor?
SKITT
He is too powerful for any mortal in this Universe. He must be stopped.
Beat.
SKITT
I tire of this conversation.
He steps out of the way, and advances behind the firing squad.
SKITT
Firing squad, raise armaments!
The Sontarans raise their blasters.
SKITT
Take aim!
They fix the crosshair on Clara. She closes her eyes, flinching. Silence. Clara opens her eyes, as a shell smashes into the ground, creating a large explosion - lots of Sontarans go flying through the air as a result of the blast. The rest of the Sontarans spring into action, diving behind barricades and shooting laser bolts at the Resistance and the Doctor - who are all wearing gas masks and armed with heavy weapons. Another grenade is thrown, exploding near Clara, which she narrowly avoids. The ropes binding her hands to the pole loosen, and she tries to wriggle her way out of them.
SKITT
Group Marshal! We have been ambushed! -Group Marshal?
Skitt hears the static over his radio, then looks up to the watchtowers - They have all been sealed off. Gorde bounds towards the entrance, placing a lock on the door and securing it shut. The Resistance surrounds the Sontaran troops, who are still fighting back, until Skitt calls them off. The Doctor moves forward.
SKITT
Doctor. At last we meet.
DOCTOR
Enough of the small talk. Where's Clara?
CLARA
Over here!
The Doctor gestures to Clara, and two of the Resistance troops rush over to her, placing a gas mask over her head and freeing her.
SKITT
I must say, after all of these generations of warfare, it is an honour to meet the enemy at last. But it shall be a greater honour to break your body.
DOCTOR
How creative. But by your armour, you're only a Field Major, in charge of ten Sontarans? We outnumber you, you're blocked from the rest of your battalion, so I'd say you're at a disadvantage, wouldn't you?
Clara stands by the Doctor's side now.
SKITT
Kill me if you wish. Sontarans do not fear death. My murder will incite even more anger towards you, and hundreds more shall join the cause.
DOCTOR
You're not a martyr, Field Major. You're a dictator, out of your depth.
CLARA
He's not in charge - there's a "Tragg" still in the base.
DOCTOR
Group Marshal Tragg? Oh, that's rich! The lost Sontaran Legion. Not much is known about them - so this is where you ended up, in the service of the Contract.
SKITT
We side with them. And we will die for them.
DOCTOR
Nope, that's not what's happening right now. Instead, you're going to confirm some theories of mine. Because I don't think this is the first time I've encountered your Contract, is it? Nah, didn't think so. Were they the ones who blew up my TARDIS?
CLARA
They did what?
SKITT
Correct. And we've been working on new, more inventive methods. Raising a Time Lord, recruiting the Master, and the Dalek Invasion of Earth in the 21st Century.
DOCTOR
Demon's Run. All this time, you've been busy, going up and down my timeline. All to stop me getting to Trenzalore and using the weapon first. Because that's where we are, isn't it? I worked it out a while back, didn't want to believe it, but this is Trenzalore. So now I'm here, you're going to, what, kill me? Or recruit me? Because you know that I'm going to find it.
SKITT
Do we?
DOCTOR
Better up your game, sir. Cos I'm the Doctor. And I'll never submit to your supremacy.
The Doctor, Clara and the Resistance, all turn their backs on the Sontarans, and start running off. Skitt picks up a blaster, about to shoot the Doctor, but he uses his sonic, and all the guns overload. [Track 10 ends]
19 INT. SONTARAN ENTRANCE - NIGHT
[Track 11: Cold War 0:00 - 1:08] Tragg and a squadron of Sontarans are bypassing the lock.
TRAGG
Hurry up!
The blast doors open suddenly, and they speed out.
20 EXT. SONTARAN TERRITORY - NIGHT
The Sontarans spread across the area, as the firing squad reset the energy packs on their blasters.
TRAGG
The female, Skitt! Where is she?
SKITT
Ambushed… Ambushed by the Resistance. They took her.
Tragg screeches.
TRAGG
You were AMBUSHED?! We knew they were coming! You insolent dog! How did you rise to the ranks of Field Major?!
Tragg kicks Skitt back onto the mud, bruising the right side of his face.
TRAGG
YOU hold responsibility, imbecile! You're disgusting and spineless! You don't deserve to be in my regiment!
SKITT
They were… prepared! They had superior technology!
TRAGG
Of course they did! They had the Doctor on their side! He's got powers beyond our wildest dreams, that's the whole point of this war! How couldn't you foresee this?
Tragg punches Skitt repeatedly, leaving a huge gash of green blood on his face. The other warriors all glance at each other - although they're wearing helmets, they're clearly shocked to see Tragg's aggression.
TRAGG
Review the footage! I need to see what happened out here! What does the Doctor know?!
Tragg looks at a Sontaran, then flings himself at the soldier.
TRAGG
GO!
The Sontaran rushes off, with the Group Marshal still fuming.
TRAGG
You may have cost us EVERYTHING, Skitt! This is a mistake you cannot atone for.
Tragg raises a pistol, and fires a shot through Skitt's skull, as his limp body flops onto the floor.
TRAGG
Must… I must report. You. Contact the Satellite Station. Find the Resistance and track them. Then go after them and destroy them! DESTROY THEM ALL!
Tragg stomps back inside, as the Sontarans recover from their abusive commander. [Track 11 ends]
21 EXT. WASTELAND - NIGHT
[Track 12: Trenzalore 0:00 - 1:42] The Doctor and Clara trudge alongside the Resistance upon one of the mountains, noticing broken shards of glass fixed firmly into the rock.
CLARA
So.
DOCTOR
So?
CLARA
I have a few questions.
DOCTOR
I expected so.
CLARA
Firstly - who is this lot?
DOCTOR
Taulian Resistance. Fighting the Sontarans.
CLARA
Secondly, why the gas masks?
DOCTOR
This planet has a long history of war. Some of them have had lasting effects - This time every solar rotation, poisonous toxins release from the clouds. Harmful to humans, but harmless to Sontarans.
CLARA
Oh yeah - you wanna talk about them?
DOCTOR
The Sontarans?
CLARA
Yeah. Why are they here? What do they want?
DOCTOR
Oh, you know...
CLARA
Not really, that's why I'm asking. All I know is I got kidnapped because of you. They want to kill you, and you were aware of that. So you know more than you're telling me.
Beat.
DOCTOR
Throughout my timeline, there's been… attempts.
CLARA
Attempts?
DOCTOR
Attempts to kill my life. By people who've signed a contract. They've recruited people to... blow up the TARDIS, steal a child and raise it as a psychopath, destroy the Earth - multiple times, I should think.
CLARA
Why?
The Doctor pulls Clara back, and talks to her quietly.
DOCTOR
We saw this planet in the future, remember? All those graves, one of them mine. I think that means…
Clara shakes her head.
CLARA
No. Don't say it.
DOCTOR
Get yourself back to the TARDIS.
CLARA
Don't be stupid! We're getting to the TARDIS together and flying away. I don't give a damn about your future, Doctor. I don't care if you're meant to die here, I'm keeping you alive.
Zayim stops, as the Doctor and Clara realise she's been listening in.
ZAYIM
You've been withholding information from us? You know we lose this?
Hysteria rises in the soldiers.
DOCTOR
Time can be rewritten, time can be changed. There is a chance that I don't die here. And my death doesn't necessarily mean you lose.
ZAYIM
But it's likely?
DOCTOR
We make our own future. It is not decided for us!
ZAYIM
Don't avoid the question - Is it more or less likely that time will run its course? Are you going to die here?
DOCTOR
Of course it's more likely - Death is always more likely in a war. But that's not stopping me. And it certainly shouldn't stop you.
Zayim pauses, then continues on. [Track 12 ends]
ZAYIM
Keep moving! That timer is still counting.
DOCTOR
How long left?
GORDE
Err… 29 minutes.
DOCTOR
29 minutes? That's ages.
ZAYIM
Not from where I'm standing.
DOCTOR
Plenty to do in 29 minutes, like-
He stands on a ridge, and points to the Resistance base.
DOCTOR
Get back to safety. Well, safe for a war. Clara and I will take the TARDIS and go that way, I don't want the Contract getting their hands on it.
ZAYIM
Nope, you're sticking with us. We can send a patrol out to retrieve it once you've cancelled the self-destruct.
The Doctor stares at Zayim. [Track 13: Spoonheads]
DOCTOR
You really don't trust anyone, do you?
ZAYIM
I've been fighting for a long time. Better to listen to orders and fight to your last breath than get swayed by sentiment.
DOCTOR
Careful, Captain. You almost sound like a Sontaran, there.
The Doctor walks past Zayim, as she freezes.
22 INT. SONTARAN BASE CONTROL - NIGHT
Tragg exits the Telecom Booth, snarling.
TRAGG
Support has arrived. Defences to maximum! All troops return to base!
An alarm wails, as Tragg stands at the central computer.
23 EXT. WASTELAND - NIGHT
Clara hears the siren in the distance.
CLARA
Something's up.
DOCTOR
I wonder what they're planning.
A rumble from overhead catches their attention. Fear is struck in the eyes of the soldiers as the clouds rip apart to make way for a threatening spacecraft, overpowering the atmosphere as the entire landscape is engulfed in its shadow. It is a great, egg-shaped ship, with long turrets extruding on both sides, forming an almost H-shape.
DOCTOR
What species?
ZAYIM
None. It's the Contract Mothership. They know you're here.
DOCTOR
Not surprising, the Sontarans must have a direct link with them.
It hangs silently in the sky.
JENDO
What is it doing?
DOCTOR
I expect we don't have to wait long to find out.
A bay door opens up - tiny in comparison to the rest of the ship - but hundreds of indeterminable objects fly out.
CLARA
What are they?
ZAYIM
Missiles?
DOCTOR
Run. RUN!
JENDO
Run where?
DOCTOR
JUST RUN!
The Doctor leads the Resistance across the battlefield, as the flying objects come into view - they are Dalek patrol ships - three black pods take the command, with countless bronze ones acting as support. They fire blasts down onto the surface, the ground erupting into fragments of gravel and earth. Slowly, the Resistance troops get struck down - Luke gets catapulted off the mountain, tumbling down the incline.
CLARA
We can't outrun them!
One more blast cuts them off from their base, as the ground collapses, toppling down and forming a huge cavern.
DOCTOR
Caves… Caves!
ZAYIM
What?
DOCTOR
There's an underground tunneling system! We'll be safe down there! Quick detour, come on!
CLARA
Quick?
DOCTOR
Better than being exposed out here!
The Doctor makes a swift turn left, and they all follow after him towards a small opening to the caves. The soldiers keep running, but the Doctor stops and turns back as Zayim aims her revolver at the patrol ships.
DOCTOR
Your gun won't make a dent in them, we've got to go!
ZAYIM
What kind of soldier would I be with my weapon fully charged?
DOCTOR
An alive one, now go!
Zayim fires a bolt at the patrol ship, but it reflects off the shield and hits the surface.
DOCTOR
See? Move it!
The Doctor grabs Zayim's hand and throws her forward, charging towards the caves where the rest of their group are waiting.
CLARA
Come on, come on!
An explosion cuts the Doctor off from Zayim and the caves. Zayim persists, making her way to safety, blocking Clara from running to the Doctor's aid.
CLARA
Doctor!
ZAYIM
You're staying right here!
CLARA
Doctor!
The Doctor runs along the crater, trying to make a way around, but the Daleks' firepower keeps making bigger ones. He groans.
DOCTOR
Okay, then. Geronimo!
He takes a few steps back, before leaping forward over the hole, his hands just clutching onto the ridge on the other side. Rocks smash apart around him as he tries to pull himself up, but he slips. Clara bursts past Zayim, knocking her to the floor, racing to the Doctor and reaching down for his hand. He tries to grab her, but nearly falls, regaining his balance on the crust. He tries again, this time being successful. She uses all her strength to lift the Doctor out of the ground, both of them yelling, before he falls by her side. They see the Daleks zooming towards them for another round, and both of them jump up and head towards the caves. They dive in as a blast hits the opening, the entrance crashing down and barricading them in.
24 INT. CAVES - NIGHT
They sigh with relief. [Track 13 ends]
DOCTOR
Augh… Is everyone okay?
CLARA
Pretty much.
Zayim pants.
DOCTOR
You okay?
ZAYIM
I've seen the Command Ship once before. I was… just a child. We had stolen a Sontaran pod and were looking for resources. They wiped an entire planet from the sky. I saw it, burning. Nothing left but rocks.
DOCTOR
Why?
ZAYIM
They were looking for you. Traces of artron energy. You come and go, Time Lord. You walk the Universe with your happy-go-lucky life. Leaving imprints on it, like footprints on a beach. Is there anywhere you haven't visited? The Contract believes that your travelling created this weapon. Whether it was intentionally or unintentionally, who knows? But you're the only one who can find it. That's the Legend of the Immortal Traveller.
DOCTOR
No. Not immortal.
ZAYIM
Not immortal? But the stories say you've regenerated eleven times now.
DOCTOR
Twelve. The secret of the Time War.
He turns away, ashamed.
DOCTOR
There was an incarnation… who fought against my code. He is not the Doctor.
ZAYIM
But he's still a regeneration?
DOCTOR
I can only regenerate twelve times, Zayim. I'm just as mortal as the rest of you.
ZAYIM
Well then, we're at an advantage. The Contract might not know this, so we can use this.
CLARA
What do you mean by that?
SAI
Captain. I have a suggestion. The Contract might destroy us all, wait for him to regenerate and capture him.
CLARA
That's what it seemed like out there.
ZAYIM
Alright, everyone, reform - we need to know how many we lost out there.
The soldiers form up, and Zayim performs a headcount. Clara looks at the Doctor.
CLARA
Daleks?
DOCTOR
Yeah. I had a suspicion. The Daleks invaded Earth a couple of years ago, remember? Somewhere they knew I'd be. The Daleks wouldn't be working under the Contract if they didn't get something from it.
CLARA
But the Daleks didn't win. I remember.
DOCTOR
Well, every contract has terms and conditions. Perhaps they reprogrammed those Daleks out there to keep working for them, no matter... what...
The Doctor suddenly moans as he hears a pounding.
CLARA
Doctor?
DOCTOR
I'm fine, I'm fine… Can you hear that?
CLARA
Hear what?
ZAYIM
What's going on?
CLARA
You, shut up a minute. Do you need to sit down?
DOCTOR
It's a… singing?
CLARA
No-one's singing.
ZAYIM
Who suffers from vision strikes?
A few soldiers raise their hands.
ZAYIM
You getting anything?
They shake their heads.
CLARA
Doctor, talk to us!
DOCTOR
Something's calling me. I think it's the source of whatever's manipulating the elements - the "weapon" you're after.
ZAYIM
Do you know where it is?
DOCTOR
It's a bit foggy, but yeah.
ZAYIM
Lead the way.
The Doctor walks on.
25 INT. SONTARAN BASE CONTROL - NIGHT
[Track 14: We Don't Need To Land] The lights flash red.
TRAGG
What's going on?
SONTARAN
We've lost contact with the North Sector - there's been a breach!
TRAGG
Why would they come back? It serves no tactical advantage!
SONTARAN
There's no enemy life signs in the base. Unknown allies are advancing. It's branded with the Contract Identity Seal, sir!
TRAGG
Open communications channel!
Over the tannoy, there are sounds of fighting, and the Sontarans getting annihilated.
TRAGG
That is NOT an ally! Lockdown procedures!
The doors are sealed shut, and the lights switch off. The Sontarans prepare to fight, aiming at the entrance. Suddenly, a massive blast knocks the doors off their hinges and they go flying across the room. Four Daleks glide in, and the Sontarans in the room raise their blasters.
DALEK
You have failed us, Group Marshal Tragg. You shall be punished.
TRAGG
No! We have devoted our lives to you! Don't!
The Sontarans turn to Tragg, then lay down their weapons.
TRAGG
What are you doing?
SONTARAN
You are not our commanding officer. No true Sontaran shows cowardice!
TRAGG
Destroy the Daleks! That is an order!
SONTARAN
You have no honour! We face death with dignity
DALEK
Exterminate!
The Daleks exterminate all the Sontarans except Tragg, then they close in on him!
TRAGG
No! I am Group Marshal Tragg! I am one of the most revered Sontarans in history! You can't do this to me! I'm Tragg the Aggressor!
He picks up a blaster and fires at the Daleks - nothing happens.
TRAGG
Stop it! We're on the same side!
DALEK
Exterminate!
TRAGG
NO! Please, I'll do anything! NOOOO!
One fatal laser fires into his chest, and he hits his head against the steel wall as he falls back onto the floor.
26 INT. CAVES - NIGHT
The soldiers make their way through the caves, sweating.
CLARA
Is it hot in here?
ZAYIM
The core of the planet expanded as a result of one of the old battles. It means that these caves are unusually hot and there can be tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, stuff like that.
CLARA
Lovely!
DOCTOR
We're getting close.
ZAYIM
You're sure?
DOCTOR
It's… very loud. We're really close, actually.
Beat.
DOCTOR
You should head back.
ZAYIM
What?
DOCTOR
I don't know what's here, but it's got to be dangerous. It's so powerful that the entire universe is fighting to control it.
GORDE
We can't leave you - you've got the countermand codes.
CLARA
And we can't let him get himself hurt.
ZAYIM
Besides, we're not letting you destroy it.
DOCTOR
For the last time, I'm not letting you use it.
Zayim grins.
ZAYIM
Who said you had a choice?
She takes out her gun and fires a shot into the Doctor. He screams, falling back against the wall. The soldiers all gasp.
JENDO
Captain!
CLARA
Doctor!
Clara crouches by his side, applying pressure to the wound as blood spills out
ZAYIM
We don't need the Time Lord anymore, we've found the weapon.
CLARA
He helped you!
ZAYIM
New plan, we're fanning out, finding that source and procuring whatever's there before the Sontarans can.
DOCTOR
But… what about the self-destruct? Only I can… stop it.
ZAYIM
We won't need our base if we've got the Sontarans'! Come on.
CLARA
Don't you dare! I'm telling you, Zayim, don't you dare!
ZAYIM
Don't follow us, or I'll have to shoot you too.
The soldiers hastily arm themselves and make their way through the tunnels. The Doctor falls onto his belly, crawling along the floor.
JENDO
We're just leaving him to die?
ZAYIM
Yes.
She turns back to the Doctor.
ZAYIM
I'm sorry it had to end this way, Doctor! But you're a liability. We've got a job to do, and when it comes to saving your reputation as a pacifist, or saving the Universe, we'd rather the Universe.
Zayim follows the troops, leaving Jendo the only one left. He hesitates, looking between the Doctor exhausted and pale on the floor and the rest of his squadron. He looks down, before abandoning the Doctor and Clara.
CLARA
How are you feeling?
DOCTOR
Oh, fine and dandy, you know(!)
CLARA
What can I do?
DOCTOR
Go after them. They can't get their hands on whatever's there. Either the power will overwhelm and kill them all or they'll commit genocide.
CLARA
I'm not leaving you, don't be stupid!
DOCTOR
We can't-
CLARA
Take my hand.
Clara pulls the Doctor up, and wraps his arm around her, as they limp after the soldiers. [Track 14 ends]
27 INT. SONTARAN BASE CONTROL - NIGHT
The Daleks have taken command of the base, like an infestation.
DALEK
Report. The traitors have been dealt with. They have been tracking the Resistance into the caves. They are nearing the core, where an energy spike has been detected.
?
Initiate shutdown of the Sontaran Base. Return to the Mothership. We shall send a force to investigate.
DALEK
We obey.
The Dalek presses its sucker onto the central monitor.
28 INT. STORAGE UNIT - NIGHT
The lights go dark, and all the creatures in the hall are gassed, dying slowly in their chambers.
29 INT. CAVE OPENING - NIGHT
[Track 15: The Crack 0:00 - 3:36] The soldiers climb under a small crevice to a great space, full of stalactites and dipped in a thick orange glow. Through one of the walls emits a bright light - It's the Crack, but wide open - almost like a window into a blank room.
GORDE
Is that it?
ZAYIM
What our ancestors have spent so long fighting for. In our grasp, finally.
KIRA
It's beautiful.
SAI
And kinda scary.
ZAYIM
Now's not the time to back out, Sai.
Zayim makes her way towards it, but Jendo holds her back.
JENDO
Are you sure about going towards it? It feels… wrong.
ZAYIM
The longer we wait, the closer the Sontarans get. Why are we doubting our chance to bring peace?
CLARA
Under here.
Zayim looks behind her, as Clara helps the Doctor into the opening.
ZAYIM
Still fighting?
DOCTOR
We're not so different after all. Have you found it?
ZAYIM
Keep him away.
DOCTOR
What is it? Show me.
Clara assists the Doctor to approach the light, but the soldiers raise their guns.
DOCTOR
I mean, you've already shot me once, what are you going to do?
CLARA
What's that light? I think there's…
DOCTOR
I need to get closer to identify it.
The Doctor hobbles along warily, until he gets a good look at it.
DOCTOR
Hello, again. Long time no see. What's on the other side of you, eh? You're familiar. Do I know you? Have we met before? I feel… stronger near you.
ZAYIM
Who are you talking to?
DOCTOR
Them.
He points inside the light.
ZAYIM
There's nothing there.
CLARA
Yes there is. Something… I can't quite make out.
DOCTOR
You can't see anything?
SAI
Some… faint figures.
DOCTOR
Oh, hang on. You get the vision strikes, right?
SAI
Yeah.
DOCTOR
Thought so. Some people have more exposure to them than others.
CLARA
You have to explain, Doctor.
DOCTOR
I'm still piecing it together myself. Where do I know you from?
Beat.
DOCTOR
Speak to me, come on! Talk to a dying man!
END
End. END.
DOCTOR
End? Ohh… No.
CLARA
What is it?
DOCTOR
There was a story on Gallifrey. A folk ghost story to scare the Time Lords. The End. Once, there was a great and powerful pioneer called Rassilon. He, amongst some others, formed the society of the Time Lords - a vigorous, dominant species, capable of some of the most magical things. And some of the worst. Claims were, should someone come to challenge Rassilon's dominion, the End would come and defy them. A weapon. That's why it's responding to me. A Time Lord. An immortal traveller, the last in existence, who's become just as powerful as the first. No-one knew if the End really existed - part of me believed that the Master always deliberately failed in case the End came for him. But here it is.
Whispers echo out from the light.
END
Doctor…
DOCTOR
That's me.
END
Doctor… Doctor Who?
ZAYIM
I can hear that.
CLARA
We all can.
END
Doctor Who? Doctor Who?
DOCTOR
The oldest question, hidden in plain sight. The identity of who could match Rassilon.
ZAYIM
You said it is a weapon.
DOCTOR
It is.
ZAYIM
So activate it.
DOCTOR
Are you insane?
ZAYIM
No. You are. You're a Time Lord, it's "how you roll".
Zayim points the gun at Clara.
ZAYIM
Prime the End, Doctor, or Clara's brains get splattered all over that very lovely wall there.
CLARA
Don't do it.
DOCTOR
There's a chance I might not be able to control it. I heard them earlier, I'm their target. Before today, I didn't even know if this existed-!
ZAYIM
Enough excuses!
The Doctor shakes his head.
DOCTOR
Fine.
CLARA
Doctor, no!
DOCTOR
I'm sorry.
CLARA
Could this kill you?
DOCTOR
Very possibly.
CLARA
Then don't do it!
DOCTOR
I don't have a choice!
CLARA
It's me, or the Universe!
DOCTOR
Exactly! There's no choice!
He sighs.
DOCTOR
Here we go.
The Doctor winces, reaching into the portal. The light shines brighter, amplifying and bouncing off the walls. Fiery energy pours out, surrounding the Doctor, who's shrieking.
CLARA
Look at him! You have to stop him!
There is a loud boom, and the roof collapses in on itself, before disappearing, and revealing the mud sky, with the Contract Mothership still above. The Doctor is flung back, and Clara catches him.
DOCTOR
We're in trouble, Clara.
CLARA
Doctor… What have you done?
ZAYIM
The Contract - defeated at last!
DOCTOR
You think that the End are going to stop at the Contract? Anyone it thinks has even a chance of overpowering Rassilon, it'll kill. You've just made me unleash the most deadly force in the Universe. Nothing can stop it now.
END
We are free. We shall do your bidding, Lord President!
DOCTOR
Look at what you've done!
There is a huge screech emerging from the light, torturing everyone around it. Lots of dark, shadowy figures fly out, shifting the environment around them, as thunder claps and lightning flashes. The Doctor resists the sound, pulling Clara out of the way.
CLARA
I can't… focus on them!
DOCTOR
You can't comprehend them, it's too much for you! Don't try, it'll… fry your brain!
ZAYIM
It… IT HURTS! STOP IT!
They all yell, writhing in agony, as the sound overwhelms them. The group is knocked out cold. [Track 15 ends]
CUT TO:
Silence. Blackness. [Track 16: This is How It Ends]
DOCTOR
Clara… Clara, wake up.
Clara opens her eyes slowly, to see the Doctor groaning.
CLARA
What… what's happening?
DOCTOR
The others haven't woken up yet. I wanted to talk to you first.
Clara looks out of the cavern to see huge towers and spires made from the ground - and more of them being built across the landscape speedily.
CLARA
Is that-?
DOCTOR
The End. Trenzalore is under their control, they've been building towards this for a long time. They can manipulate the environment and bend matter to their will. This is their fortress.
CLARA
So what now? We go and stop them, right?
A tear rolls down the Doctor's face.
DOCTOR
Clara Oswald. It's been an honour and a privilege to know you. And I know that you will do just fine on your own.
CLARA
You're saying goodbye? Don't say goodbye. Stop saying goodbye.
DOCTOR
Can't. Have to.
CLARA
You can't fight those things on your own!
DOCTOR
Don't worry; I've got a plan. The doorway into their dimension's been moved to their central tower. You're right, they're too powerful for me to defeat, but I can… stop the spread. If I can… close it off, then they're weakened. They feed off the power from their dimension, so if it closes up, maybe, just maybe they'll wither away and die. I think. I hope. I could be wrong, now wouldn't that be awkward?
The Doctor stands up, and Clara grabs him, sobbing.
CLARA
Don't go. I thought you hated endings.
DOCTOR
I do. But it's time.
He heaves a heavy sigh.
DOCTOR
...Goodbye.
He hugs her warmly.
DOCTOR
My impossible girl. Thank you.
CLARA
No. I won't let you go.
He lets her go, and starts to stagger away.
DOCTOR
This is it, eh?
CLARA
No!
DOCTOR
Yes. We saw the future, Clara. This is how it ends.
CLARA
I'm coming with you.
DOCTOR
No. Promise me you'll stay.
CLARA
Why?
DOCTOR
Because I can keep you safe. That's the best I can do. My final victory.
He smiles, then walks off.
DOCTOR
At least I'll have a dignified death. I was always so scared I'd die by tripping over a brick.
He climbs up the slope towards the central tower, which is beaming a black light into the sky. Clara goes to chase after him, but she stops, wiping a tear from her face, then going back to the soldiers, almost retching.
CLARA
Wake up! All of you, get up now!
She shakes their legs, tears still streaming down her face and her still wiping them away.
30 EXT. CENTRAL TOWER ENTRANCE - NIGHT
The Doctor pushes against the door, and it swings open with a big creak.
DOCTOR
Loving the design, you lot! Can you even hear me from up there? Don't worry, I'll come to you!
He enters and begins to climb the stairs leading to the top of the tower.
31 EXT. CAVE RUINS - NIGHT
The soldiers huddle around.
CLARA
Listen up you lot!
ZAYIM
What's going on?
CLARA
That doesn't matter. We have to help him. We have to help the Doctor.
ZAYIM
How?
CLARA
I don't know, but we can't just watch him die! We've got to do something! Even after you betrayed him, he's fighting to save your lives! You've been fighting in his name, and I'm here to tell you who he truly is. He doesn't care about who you are or what you've done. He doesn't care if you're a child or old or weak or strong or fighter or a coward! It's never been about whose side he's on. For him, it's been about protecting everyone. Saving lives. No matter what. He's not a god. He's an ordinary man trying to do the right thing. And sometimes he can't always do that. But he's trying his best for the entire Universe. And he loves everyone. And it's time we paid him back.
She looks to the soldiers - they're inspired, and ready to help. She beams away. [Track 16 ends]
32 INT. CENTRAL TOWER - NIGHT
[Track 17: Day of the Moon] The End fly around - they're shifting, unstable creatures, made from anti-matter and have a negative energy look about them - glowing and surrounded in shadow. The centre of the tower holds the pulsating doorway, projecting its power across the planet. The Doctor climbs up the stairs, and they all face him.
DOCTOR
Sorry I'm a bit slow. I'm not at my best right now - I got shot earlier. But I'm still more than a match for you.
END
You… are our target?
DOCTOR
Limited vocabulary? Don't worry, you'll adjust to our universe if you spend long enough, you'll get a grip on more words. Well, let's hope that doesn't happen, actually.
END
Doctor Who?
He laughs.
DOCTOR
What a question, eh? What a question. Everyone asks that, expecting different answers - a name, a statement. The thing is, you've got it wrong. There's only ever been one answer. It's just the Doctor. That's all the name you need. You play with Gods and Demons and Time Lords, and I wonder - do you know what the word "doctor" means? It means to help. To heal. And if you threaten this Universe, then I'm going to help it and stop you however I can. Cos you know why?
The Doctor paces around the tower.
DOCTOR
Because I'm the Doctor. I am the one you've been looking for. I've been running for so long, and here I am, finally. Against you. What I've been running from my whole life. Do you know what you are? You're me. When I stepped inside my TARDIS for the first time, I became something bigger than I could've ever imagined. You've watched me fight armies, and tricksters, and goblins, and phantoms, and monsters, and I never truly escaped the monster I carried with me the entire time. That monster is you. Born from Rassilon's power, sent out to fight the darkness, but killing so many in the process. I've put so many in danger, and even more now that you're free. Countless lives have been lost because of me. If I were to list them all, we'd be here all day, but I remember every single one. And that's what makes us different. Because you will, too - but you don't care about them. And I do. And today's the day when I save the Universe in honour of them. This stops today!
END
You… cannot stop us!
DOCTOR
Just watch me!
He runs to the portal, but the End shoot towards him, firing energy into his hearts - He goes straight onto the floor, laughing.
DOCTOR
You think that'll stop me? You really don't know me at all.
He stands back up, stumbling towards the portal.
DOCTOR
Haha. See ya.
He jumps inside, and the sky rumbles.
33 EXT. WASTELAND - NIGHT
The Resistance soldiers dart across, as the earth begins to shake violently.
ZAYIM
What is he doing?
CLARA
He's closing the portal! Nevermind him, it's just over there!
They speed up.
34 INT. CENTRAL TOWER - NIGHT
The portal starts to seal itself shut. The End flicker away slowly, but regain their stability. He cackles.
DOCTOR
Your time in this dimension is running out - and it wasn't short enough!
The tower begins to crumble, but the End use their powers to rebuild it.
DOCTOR
Don't fight it for much longer! You can't sustain yourself out here!
END
We will adapt!
DOCTOR
To do what? Your target is to kill me! And this is killing me anyway! Your job is going to be done before you've even done anything!
END
We will find new targets!
DOCTOR
And there you go again, killing more people! But that's not going to happen whilst I'm alive!
END
Then live no more.
One of the End throws itself at the Doctor, wrestling him, before pushing him to the side as it slams shut. [Track 17 ends] They pick his flaccid body up, drag him along the floor, and throw him off the side, falling… falling…
35 EXT. CENTRAL TOWER ENTRANCE
CRASH! The Doctor smashes into the ground. Around them, the End all freeze in place. Weakly, he watches on as they stop. The TARDIS materialises beside him, and Clara runs out.
CLARA
Doctor!
DOCTOR
Clara. My Clara. Here to see me off, eh?
CLARA
I was too late…
DOCTOR
No. You're here when I need you. That's the only time I wanted. By my side, at the end. I don't know how long it'll take the End to rebuild, but you can stop them. I have faith in you. I always have. Never forget to do the right thing.
CLARA
I won't. I won't.
The Doctor whispers.
DOCTOR
I know…
He shuts his eyes, and Clara droops her head, sobbing. [Track 18: Song For Four / Home 2:42 - 3:40] Suddenly, his eyes spring back open, as he hears a familiar tinkling, and a blazing light descending upon him. He looks confused. Jendo runs out from the blue box, and pulls Clara back.
CLARA
What's happening?!
JENDO
Get down!
The rest of the Resistance come out to gaze at the spectacle. He stands up, staring at his hands being engulfed in regeneration energy.
DOCTOR
Eh?
He realises:
36 INT. CAVE OPENING - NIGHT
The Doctor reaches into the portal. The light shines brighter, amplifying and bouncing off the walls. Fiery energy pours out, surrounding the Doctor, who's shrieking.
37 EXT. CENTRAL TOWER ENTRANCE - NIGHT
He whoops.
CLARA
Doctor?!
He throws one final glance to Clara.
DOCTOR
Don't be scared. Don't be scared!
Laughing wildly, the regenerative process takes full swing, his face changing, becoming wrinklier, his hair curling and greying. Clara watches on, terrified, before the regeneration energy disperses, and reveals -
The Twelfth Doctor. [Track 18 ends]
