1 INT. TARDIS CORRIDOR
[Track 1: He Will Never Make A Time Lord] The camera creeps slowly, low to the floor of the TARDIS corridor. The light is the dim bluish, the current default for TARDIS Night mode. The TARDIS hum is loud. The camera creeps round a corner then through a door into the Library...

2 INT. TARDIS LIBRARY
The ambient orange light is replaced with subtle colours cast by the myriad bottles on the library shelves and the TARDIS hum is replaced with the uncountable whisperings of the bottled 'books'. The camera continues its creep over the rich carpet, then it focuses on the Doctor, sitting cross legged.

DOCTOR
Okay. Are we all ready?

The Doctor takes a deep breath.

BOTTLED BOOKS
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

The Doctor breathes out. The books echo a cacophony of moans and noises of complaints.
The Doctor hears a distant voice.

Clara (oc)
Doctor...? Doctor! Are you hiding somewhere?

The Doctor hurries to his feet and out into the corridor, his expression that of a guilty schoolboy.

3 INT. TARDIS CORRIDOR
The Doctor practically runs into Clara.

CLARA
Woah.. Is something the matter? I thought I heard voices complaining.

DOCTOR
No. Nothing. Deep dimensioning forces in this part of the TARDIS. Affects human brains oddly. Best not to come down here.

CLARA
Okay… Not acting suspiciously at all. Why are the lights on night setting and what are you up to down here?

DOCTOR
Reducing Universal warming and… things.

CLARA
Universal warming and things?

DOCTOR
I might have been sleeping. Anyway, back to the console room. There is something I want us to try.

The Doctor clicks his fingers and the lights return to TARDIS DAY. Clara lets the Doctor lead her round the corridor out of sight.

CLARA (oc)
I always imagined, if you ever slept, it would be standing on one leg with your head tucked under your arm like an Emu...

4 INT. TARDIS
The Doctor stands with Clara by the console's telepathic interface. Clara steps up keenly, rubbing her hands.

CLARA
What do you want me to think of?

DOCTOR
It's not always about you, Clara.

CLARA
Harsh. And arguably not true. So this is about you? Okay. I am intrigued.

DOCTOR
Am I a bad man, Clara?

CLARA
Haven't we done this already? You do your best to be a good person. That's all anyone can do.

DOCTOR
Travelling in time. Interfering. How can you know if in the end what is done is bad or good? If a change causes a friend to be born, but many others to suffer and die...

CLARA
The need of the one exceeding the needs of the many.

DOCTOR
And? Miss Oswald. How bad is that? How far from good?

The Doctor turns and plunges his hands deep into the TARDIS telepathic circuits. The upper console begins to spin. The sound of dematerialisation roars loud. [Track 1 ends]

ROLL TITLES

5 INT. BASIC ABODE - DAWN
[Track 2: Am I A Good Man?] It is a simple, one room hut. Dust motes in the air, but it seems homely. Orange dawn light comes through the window. A man with a simple hooded robe, Juhn, is sitting at what appears to be a wooden table with an over large, dark blue crystal sphere on it. He is late 20s white and pale, with hints of mixed race in his features. Juhn's head is cradled in his hands, elbows on the table, his nose nearly touching the sphere. As he concentrates the deep blue clears to the edges, like the reverse of blue/black ink in water. The TARDIS materialises in his view through the sphere, but he doesn't break concentration. The Doctor steps out first.

DOCTOR
...It's my mind's choice so of course I step out first.

CLARA
What, afraid your subconscious might have taken you someplace you don't want me to see?

DOCTOR
I've been to many places I don't want you to see.

CLARA
Man of mystery. Don't worry, I won't judge you.

DOCTOR
You judge everybody, Probably a teacher thing.

CLARA
Who's that?

The Doctor goes up to Juhn who is trembling, but does not show any reaction to the Doctor's approach. The Doctor waves his sonic about, paying particular attention to the sphere.

DOCTOR
Interesting. It is mostly just coloured water, but there is some advanced technology in the base.

He sweeps the sonic round the whole room.

DOCTOR
Actually the only technology in the room. It is a basic psychic test - the probability of the liquid naturally clearing is infinitesimal.

CLARA
So he is using his mind to separate the colouring from the water. Interesting. But what's more interesting is... you are being ignored as much as you are ignoring him. Hi, sorry to disturb you. I'm Clara.

Juhn gets up, the sphere diffuses back to dark blue and then he bows his head to Clara.

JUHN
Forgive me, my Lady. I thought… I thought you were an image in the sphere. My name is Juh… Leki. Leki.

DOCTOR
You need a lot more mental talent to summon images rather than just purify water.

JUHN
My Lady? Why do you let your servant use technology and speak without permission?

DOCTOR
What? Servant!…

JUHN
And how can he be so old?

DOCTOR
Old!

Clara holds up her hand. Visible amusement in her face.

CLARA
Shush.

The Doctor looks about to explode, his eyebrows very angry. Clara gestures with exaggerated authority.

CLARA
Shush. Just a boy with a toy. Old boy, old toy. Forgets his place sometimes. Have you seen images like us before, Juh Leki Le..

She deliberately struggles with the name, speaking slowly.

JUHN
Ju... Just Leki.

CLARA
Just Leki?

JUHN
Tomorrow is dawning my lady. The Meldons will come for me. Tomorrow I must die.

6 EXT. SQUARE OUTSIDE ABODE - DAY
Orange turns swiftly to light. The air is warm and dry. Two men, in rich purple, gold lined, robes, the Meldons, stand outside waiting perfectly still. They look like identical twins. Their faces are identical, an almost perfect blend of heritage and symmetry making them generically handsome. A young lady, Sereh, is dressed in a white suit with blue piping. Sereh is early 20s dark Asian . Other people are going about their business. Many women are dressed similarly to Sereh and many men are robed like Juhn.
The street is compacted earth with no pavements. Some vehicles, mostly personal auto piloted, with hexagonal levitation fields mix freely with pedestrians. The bustle is like a small town Earth morning crawl to work. It is a diverse representation of all the races from Earth, but there is no obvious disability representation, no obesity and no one over 30.
The door of the abode opens and Juhn steps out, head bowed followed by the Doctor and Clara. A man staggers up. He is dressed the same, he looks the same… Juhn's twin Leki. He is staggering, trying to speak. Sereh stops him from approaching. Juhn looks at him and raises his voice.

JUHN
Please, brother. I want to do this as you know it must be done.

Leki is struggling with Sereh, but he is weak. She holds him back. Juhn walks calmly to join the robed men. He hugs both in turn.

DOCTOR
Brothers? Twins?

CLARA
They look like twins. Leki and his brother and those two Meldons.

DOCTOR
Height and face shape are very much determined by genetics, but those Meldons are a bit too samey don't you think? I'll follow them, find out some more and save him.

CLARA
I'll see if I can help with his brother.

DOCTOR
Notice the sky, the shadows. Clara. Much is artificial. Watch for twins.

The Doctor begins to follow Juhn and the Meldons. Clara looks up at the sky, frowns and looks down. The Doctor is already out of sight.

CLARA
No sun. No shadows.

She studies the sky. The sky has joins. It is formed of huge, faint edged, hexagons. They form a dome, but it's curves are obscured by internal clouds, the edges reach far beyond the town buildings. Clara goes over to Sereh.

CLARA
Is he ill? Can I help?

SEREH
Who are you?

CLARA
Clara, a stranger if you like, I want to help.

Sereh glares. Fear, hate, panic all flash across her face as...

LEKI (slurred)
Leki… I'm Leki… No...Stop.

SEREH
Help me get him back to his house before…

The two thin human shaped Anatomics appear by silent teleportation. They are like golden anatomic models of humans. They are both beautiful and disturbing - like a person with their; skin, flesh and fat flayed off, exposing muscles and tendons, then dipped in gold.

ANATOMIC 1
Why is physical contact instigated?

ANATOMIC 2
Is medical assistance required?

Their voices are high, possibly female, but clipped and artificial. As it speaks Anatomic 2 raises its arm, palm out, fingers spread upwards. A thin needle extends from it's middle finger, faintly yellow, liquid dribbles down its length.

SEREH
It is emotional. Non medical. I am qualified. No sampling or diagnostic required.

ANATOMIC 2
Sedative.

As fast as lightning, Anatomic 2 stabs it's needle finger into Leki's heart. Leki slumps and Clara helps Sereh hold him up. The two anatomics walk away.

SEREH
My home is nearer.

7 EXT. VARIOUS STREETS - DAY
The Doctor is following the two robed men who are walking slowly either side of Juhn. People give way. Some fold their arms around themselves, self hugging and look down with sad respect. Bored, at the slow pace, the Doctor zig zags about the street as he follows. He doubles back to follow two Anatomics touching the top of his head, then gesturing with his hand at their heads checking their height. The Anatomics don't notice, but a group of girls in white school trouser suits do. Some glare, some laugh. A group of robed school boys is moving in the other direction from the girls. The Doctor looks back and forth at the movement of the children, then to other robed men, who are moving in the opposite direction as the women and children in white. A handful of men and women have more ordinary clothes. All the adults are under 30. The Doctor looks to the heart of the town, where stands an almost medieval Temple.

DOCTOR
Now look at that. A mix of technology. Basic and primeval in the centre, futuristic and genius on the outskirts. Why's that?

CUT TO:

8 EXT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
Clara and Sereh are struggling to get the barely conscious Leki into Sereh's clean white home.

CLARA
Good job you have an automatic front door.

SEREH
Get him in quick. Less people might see.

CLARA
I don't think that was correct grammar.

SEREH
Shut up and get him inside.

[Track 2 ends]

9 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
[Track 3: Account Closed] It has two storeys, a fish tank, a cat, and a hyper modern small kitchen/lounge. There is a clean antiseptic smell. The women get Leki to lie on the couch. Clara does not hide how impressed she is as she looks around.

CLARA
So, where's the glass ceilingglass ceiling.

SEREH
I don't understand?

CLARA
You and the woman seem to be achieving much more than the men.

SEREH
We Sigh have technology, the Meld men have their disciplines and studies. The others are helpers. Thank you for your help. You may go. Clara pauses quite a while.

CLARA
May I? First I am a lady, now a nobody. Is it my clothes or my face?

SEREH
Are you truly a stranger? You do not dress like a Sigh, but if you came from outside... ? I didn't mean to be rude.

As she talks Sereh opens a small metallic box. It contains colour crystal vapour injectors. She puts a yellow one to Leki's neck. He falls into sleep.

CLARA
Will that make him better?

SEREH
No. It will keep him unconscious until his brother is dead.

10 EXT. OUTSIDE TEMPLE - DAY
The purple and gold robed Meldons bow at the central Temple doors, They produce an iron key, open the door, enter and close it behind them. The Doctor hurries up. Trys the door. It is locked. He touches the stone surround and then the door that looks like heavy wood. He steps back and scans with his sonic on the lock.

DOCTOR
Metal lock, plastic door though.

The lock sparks. The Doctor tries several settings, more sparks in various colours, but the door stays shut. The Doctor thumps the metal plating about the lock.

DOCTOR
Too bulky and primitive.

A crowd is gathering, attracted by the Doctor's activity. The crowd is mostly robed, meld, men. There are few simply dressed men and fewer simply dressed women. No women dressed in white suits. None of the hexagonal based levitating personal transports. The Doctor speaks to the nearest person, a young Chinese man in simple work clothes.

DOCTOR
Do you have a key? Does anyone have a key?

MAN
How old are you?

The man touches his own face, then reaches towards the Doctor's face.

DOCTOR
No touching. I am against it. Keep clear.

He turns. Big gesture with the sonic pointing at the door. The sonic screeches and the plastic around the lock starts to smoke and melt.

11 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
Sereh is gently tousling Leki's hair.

SEREH
Juhn took Leki's place. Leki was kissed for death. Juhn knew how we felt about each other. Juhn did this for us. Juhn drugged him with the medicine I provided. All relations between Sigh and Meld and 'tomorrow deaths' by Anatomics or sacrifice to Pharie are proscribed. There is no space for wild love. Our babies are created from selections and combinations of our DNA and birthed from artificial wombs.

CLARA
So what you're saying is.. Your Pharie controls your society so certain groups perform certain functions? Like, women bred for technology skills, men for mental powers? I mean, kinda works, but that's horrible. What about the helpers?

SEREH
They farm, maintain the infrastructure, assist with anything. They help.

CLARA
So Pharie uses Anatomic and Meldons to control. Then the female Sigh, the male Melds and at the bottom the helpers?

SEREH
It's not how we want it!. When our colony ships landed, nearly all of the terraformers failed. We think the Pharie did this. There are many other domes, but we were only supposed to remain inside for 10 years not for generations. The planet outside is habitable now, but the Pharie still keeps us inside.

CLARA
I'm so sorry. And you said no one lives beyond thirty?

SEREH
Bred like animals and slaughtered young. There is a resistance movement.

CLARA
You don't live past thirty. You don't have much time.

SEREH
Bright candles. Burning bright. 'Bright Candles' is the Meld mens name for Sighs.

CLARA
And is there a Sigh woman name for the male Melds?

SEREH
The fools of Pharie.

Sereh seems slightly cheered by the mentioning of resistance, candles and fools. A wall dissolves into a view of the Doctor by the Temple door. His arms are held behind his back by a purple and gold robed handsome faced Melodons another is advancing towards him, A larger crowd has gathered. Behind him the Temple door is spitting flames, liquid thick black smoke roiling up, staining the Temple's stonework. [Track 3 ends]

12 EXT. OUTSIDE TEMPLE - DAY
[Track 4: Start The Clock] There is a sound like a gong. A strong cold wind roars in. The Doctor looks up as a giant skull-headed, skin-winged, creature appears above the Temple. All, except the Meldon holding the Doctor and the one in front of him, drop to their knees as if pushed by the wind. The temple door stops burning. The men cry out, praising the creature, which glares balefully down.

MAN
Pharie! Hail! Hail!

The Doctor too, falls to his knees. The creature suddenly disappears with a radiation of light and heat. Those kneeling are knocked over on their backs. The Meldon in front of the Doctor grabs the Doctor's head, bends him forwards and holds him in a long kiss to his lips…

13 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
Clara observes the kiss of the Doctor in, wall to ceiling, close up.

CLARA
He is not going to like that. Not at all.

The screen goes off. It is just a wall again. Sereh is struggling with Leki who is writhing and screaming.

LEKI
Juhn!

SEREH
Shush. I'm here. We are here.

CLARA
Why's it so cold?

As she speaks the spreading wave of light and heat arrives, brightens the windows and shakes the house.

CLARA
Why is it so hot?

LEKI
He's gone, my brother's gone.

Leki cries out in anguish, causing everything in the room, smaller than a chair, to rise into the air…

CLARA
What?

The room becomes chaos with Leki in the middle: Clara is thrown. Pinned to the wall. A chair strikes her leg, a vase of flowers smashes beside her face. Everything holds for a beat then falls to the ground. Clara sags. The cat hisses at Leki and flees the house via an almost invisible cat flap in the door. The goldfish bowl is untouched by the chaos.

SEREH
Hush, Leki. Rest.

CLARA
Is he all right?

SEREH
His brother is dead. No, he isn't.

Leki is unconscious. Clara hobbles over.

SEREH
I am sorry. You are injured. Your face is bleeding.

Clara raises her hand, touches and smears out a sliver of pottery, leaving a bloody trail. She goes to the cracked glass of the vanity cabinet trying to see her face in the three damaged mirrors.

CLARA
I don't think it's deep. You can fix it. Can't you?

SEREH
I can fix your cut, but your friend….

CLARA
The Doctor, yes.

SEREH
He has received the kiss of Pharie. Tomorrow he dies.

Clara's eyes widen even more than usual. [Track 4 ends]

14 EXT. MARKET SQUARE - NIGHT
[Track 5: We're Still Going To Kill You] It is the silver pink light of night in the dome. The Doctor is locked in stocks in the centre of the town's large Market Square. He is in a simple white smock which is stained from thrown fruit. A cold chill in the air reveals the Doctor's breath. Clara is dressed in the blue piped white trousers and top - clothes from Sereh that are both too tight and too long. She is not happy and still limping from her leg injury . She has a blue plaster on her face. She steps gingerly over remains of rotten fruit and broken eggs on the ground.

CLARA
Are you awake?

DOCTOR
Why are you walking funny? Have you twisted your ankle?

CLARA
You smell even worse than you look. I've come to free you.

DOCTOR
You could have come earlier.

CLARA
I did. But I couldn't get close because of the children throwing stuff at the 'Naughty novelty old man.'

DOCTOR
Did you enjoy watching that?

CLARA
It was hilarious, got about fifteen minutes recorded on my phone. I've got your sonic.

DOCTOR
How did you get that?

CLARA
I'll explain later.

DOCTOR
It won't work... you might be able to soften the plastic but…

CLARA
I've brought this too.

Clara hefts a curved metal bar. She clangs it on the flagstones, the noise reverberates off the surrounding buildings, before she raises it to strike.

DOCTOR
What happened to your face? Did you cut yourself shaving?

CLARA
Shut up. I am so tempted to hit you rather than the lock.

Clara smashes the bar down onto the lock.

DOCTOR
Ow. You did hit me!

CLARA
Hold still then.

She repeats that action again.

DOCTOR
Ow. You're doing it on purpose!

CLARA
Keep stiller then.

DOCTOR
Ow.

CLARA
I haven't even hit it yet. Stop moaning.

DOCTOR
You could use it as a crowbar and lever me free.

CLARA
I could. But this is more satisfying.

Four hard smashes and the Doctor is free. He stands stiffly in his damp, stained smock.

CLARA
We need to get you a shower.

She waves her hand to ward off the smell.

15 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAWN
Orange pre-dawn light streams inside. Leki is hunched into an armchair. The Doctor, Clara and Sereh are standing round the table. It is projecting a map of the town. They all have mugs of coffee.

DOCTOR
How did you get my sonic?

CLARA
Same way I got your clothes back. With the help of the Sigh resistance movement, running around all day and a night with no sleep.

DOCTOR
So you cut yourself shaving because you were tired? You should be more careful. I don't think anyone would notice if you missed a day.

SEREH
You can take the plaster off now. It will be fully healed.

CLARA
Thank you, my leg is better too. Nice coffee.

Clara, struck by a thought, turns to the Doctor.

CLARA
Is there coffee on every future Earth settlement?

DOCTOR
Yes. Depressingly so. I do try and encourage tea drinking, but it is a big universe. Very hard to civilise it all.

SEREH
You will be taken at dawn, Doctor.

DOCTOR
Because I was kissed for death by these 'Meldons'? The suspiciously handsome twin men, of exactly the same height, wearing the fetching purple and gold?

LEKI
You will be taken as my brother was.

The Doctor moves over and puts his coffee mug on a damaged coffee table in front of Leki.

DOCTOR
Can you move this with your mind?

LEKI
No.

DOCTOR
You destroyed this whole room, except for Sereh and the goldfish, so you kept some control.

CLARA
Hey. Why did I get hurt then?

DOCTOR
Your brother's death has blasted open your synapses. And I am guessing you would have had the greater ability. Your brother should not have died. You should be the dead one.

CLARA
Doctor!

The mug of coffee rises and smashes into the Doctor's raised arm. Coffee on his sleeve and in his hair. The other coffee cups rise and circle the Doctor.

DOCTOR
That's good. Good control. Good job you survived.

Another coffee hits the back of the Doctor's head.

CLARA
Stop it, Doctor. Do you suddenly like having stuff thrown at you now?

Another coffee cup strikes the Doctor's head. Coffee runs down his face.

SEREH
Please, Leki - stop.

Sereh's own coffee mug returns and settles on the table in front of her.

DOCTOR
Will the Meldons find me here?

SEREH
Probably - we, that is me and Juhn - did not really think we would have been able to fool them… He just insisted we try.

DOCTOR
It is being twins. I told you to watch for twins, Clara.

CLARA
You told me, but you never explained why.

DOCTOR
I saw two Anatomics, which come in pairs. The Meldons also act as if twinned. It is ironic that they could not distinguish between real human twins. Can somebody get me a towel?

Clara rolls her eyes.

CUT TO:

The coffee cups have been refilled. The Doctor has bits of electronics scattered over the table, he is working frantically, burning his fingers as he manipulates welds that are still hot. Sereh is opening some dull tins, looking like dog food, onto plates.

SEREH
These are old Colony rations. All I can do with the Doctor dismantling the food unit.

The Doctor burns his fingers again.

DOCTOR
Can you replay the image of the Pharie?

SEREH
The screen only shows what we are required to witness. The Anatomics control the feed.

DOCTOR
They appear to be medical type androids? They interact with the Sigh women and oddly, or should that be evenly, come in pairs? Oddly being exactly the same height as the Meldons?. The Anatomics are not from the original Colony ship... Don't answer!

Clara's mobile rings.

CLARA
It's Danny.

She smiles as she answers.

CLARA
Hey, you.

The Doctor waves his sonic and Clara's phone sparks out of her hand. The Doctor, remarkably, catches it mid air.

CLARA
Seriously?

DOCTOR
I need some parts.

CLARA
I've already uploaded the video of you in the stocks.

DOCTOR
Leki, can you do the purification test with the coffee?

The Doctor doesn't even look at Leki. Leki regards him hatefully.

DOCTOR
Well?

The Doctor does not even look up from his work at his own coffee cup.

SEREH
All the cups are clear.

DOCTOR
Leki, with your mind you can affect any liquid in any container. Any container with any solution inside.

The Doctor pauses and looks at Leki to make sure he is listening. There is a knock at the door.

DOCTOR
I am not ready. Lock it!

SEREH
We have no locks!

DOCTOR
Block it!

The door opens automatically and two handsome men in gold and purple, the Meldons, enter.

DOCTOR
Nearly there.

The men walk over, Clara intercepts.

CLARA
Hello I'm Clara. Are you brothers? Actual brothers because you…

They push her aside and take the Doctor's arms pulling him effortlessly to his feet. They take him to the door.

DOCTOR
Leki, help. Their heads are just like our cups of coffee. An impure liquid in a head sized container. You can purify them!

Clara charges and grabs at one of the meldons, but even her momentum does not impact on them. They drag the Doctor out of the house.

16 EXT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAWN
The streets are busy, more Sigh women and girls in this area of town. The faces are much grimmer and eyes cast down than yesterday. The Doctor is struggling hard, but in vain with the two purple and gold robed Meldons.

DOCTOR
Leki, they're coffee heads, mostly just liquid in containers!

Leki comes to the door, pushes past Clara and Sereh and stares. The two robed Meldons fall limply to the ground. The street suddenly takes notice, people stop and draw closer.

DOCTOR
Help me get them inside.

17 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAWN
They lie the Meldons on the floor.

DOCTOR
Let me show you something.

The Doctor grabs the hair of the two fallen Meldons and slowly peels off their faces. Clara instinctively draws back. Two Anatomic, blood on gold, skulls are revealed.

DOCTOR
The Meldons are Anatomics too. They wear human skins for interaction with the psychic Melds, but don't need a disguise themselves around the Techy Sighs.

Clara moves closer.

CLARA
How did you know?

DOCTOR
Twins, Clara. Identical heights.

The nearest Meldon/Anatomic jerks to life. A needle full of red shoots out through the skin of its hand and it stabs into Clara's heart. [Track 5 ends]

DOCTOR
Clara!

CLARA
That was not nice.

DOCTOR
Leki, keep their heads purified with your mind. Clara? Focus on my face.

CLARA
You know your eyebrows….

Clara slumps into unconsciousness. The Doctor feels for a pulse and leans in to listen for a breath. Sereh has grabbed some sheets to try and tie up the Anatomics.

DOCTOR
That won't hold them.

The Doctor lays Clara on the couch, grabs his sonic and angrily explodes the head of the Anatomic that had injected Clara. Blue/black fluid pumps out and it writhes before settling and oozing and staining is purple and gold robes. Leki stares and the oozing fluid, for a moment, it Doctor adjusts the sonic and buzzes the other Anatomic's skull gently.

DOCTOR
What has it done to her?

LEKI
She is selected for death. Tomorrow she dies.

The Doctor's face hardens.

18 EXT. VARIOUS STREETS - DAY
[Track 6: Blue Rescue One] The Doctor is walking between two purple and gold robed figures, their heights are slightly different, their faces are ill fitting masks of skin. Leki is on the left, in slightly stained robes and the Meldon/Anatomic on the right.

LEKI
Sereh will do all she can for Clara.

DOCTOR
But normally everyone just stands by and lets them die.

LEKI
You judge us harshly.

DOCTOR
Am I wrong?

LEKI
You have more knowledge. But you would not have it if you lived as we do.

DOCTOR
Your environment is an unethical experiment. Eugenics to make women brilliant with technology and men with developed mental powers.

LEKI
It is evil. Why though? You know of the Pharie. Do you know why?

DOCTOR
Not entirely. It's behaviour is familiar. I've recognised it in Daemons. The Daemons experiment on whole planets purely for psionic powers. The Pharie dabbles, on a smaller scale, in both psionics and technology.

LEKI
Why?

DOCTOR
I don't know. Why am I expected to know everything? Their science is...

LEKI
Is what?

DOCTOR
My people have an acceptance with them. A truce from our dark times. I'll admit that… I've seen something like what is being done to you before. Caused it even. But it is not right. And I've got to fix this.

The Doctor scowls, flashing the sonic; setting a faster, angry, pace in the Meldon/Anatomic on his right.

19 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
Clara on the couch. Sereh is mopping her forehead.

CLARA
I can't move my… I can't move.

SEREH
Try your fingers and feet. Your fine motor skills should return first.

CLARA
Everything hurts. Burns. Where is the Doctor?

SEREH
Going to the temple with Leki. When the Pharie appears we are to activate his machine.

CLARA
Basically a fancy combination oven and mobile phone.

SEREH
The Doctor did explain. The Pharie takes energy, vibration, from the air to grow big and appear in the sky. Because of that there is a cold wind when it appears. The Doctor's machine causes interference with this.

CLARA
The power of this... lash up… would be insignificant.

SEREH
The Doctor says the insignificance is why it works. He used the word 'homeopathy'? The smaller the bigger. The subtler the suggestion the more powerful the effect. Pharie Science.

CLARA
I think I had more confidence without the explanation

SEREH
When the Pharie is big it is vulnerable to small effects. When it is invisibly small, huge power is needed to harm it. He said it is like shorter wavelengths having higher energy… But not really.

Clara rests her head. [Track 6 ends]

20 EXT. OUTSIDE TEMPLE - DAY
Leki and the Doctor stare up at the temple, feeling threatened by its size.

LEKI
Should we go in?

DOCTOR
We want it to come out. Perhaps I should set the door on fire again? Might be fun.

[Track 7: Siege Mode] The public are shocked as they watch the Doctor taking out his sonic to commit heresy once again. A chill wind blasts and the giant skull-headed, skin-winged Pharie appears in the sky for the second time.

21 INT. SEREH'S HOUSE - DAY
The wall screen shows the giant creature over the temple. Sereh hesitates briefly, until the wave of cold air hits her house, her exhaled breath suddenly visible. She switches the Doctor's machine on.

SEREH
The Doctor said we should get out.

CLARA
I can't move my legs!

Sereh rushes over to her.

22 EXT. OUTSIDE TEMPLE - DAY
The Pharie screams. It's wings beat erratically, it's claws scratch at the sky. It begins to tumble to the ground.

DOCTOR
Undercover!

The Doctor and Leki duck into the alcove of the temple doorway. The robed Anatomic mirrors Leki's movement, but there is not enough room. The Anatomic keeps walking robotically into the temple wall.

DOCTOR
Come on. Minimise. Minimise.

With an horrific roar the Pharie flaps up across the town and the lands. It scoops with its giant claws and rips Sereh's house from the ground, lifts it above it's head, crushes it and throws it up. People scream and take cover as the debris falls over a vast area of the town.

DOCTOR
It's not working...

With a wave of the sonic the Doctor explodes the head of the robed Meldon/Anatomic. Walking robotically into the wall. Its head leaves a slick black streak as it slides down the wall. The Pharie slaps the air, bursts into the sky and then lands crouching in front of the temple, in front of the Doctor, it's expression hateful and curious.. The Doctor holds the sonic like a gently buzzing candle. It is reflected deep in the Pharie's eye as it leans close to study them.

DOCTOR
Kneel.

LEKI
Never.

DOCTOR
It won't kill if we kneel.

The Doctor reaches up and pulls Leki to his knees. The Pharie opens its mouth. Warm putrid breath becomes a roar of heat and then the creature is gone. All the people that had failed to find shelter remain on their knees. A small single person transporter weaves through them - it is a bit like a Segway, but has an hexagonal base and a blue levitation field rather than wheels. Sereh drives, autopilot disengaged, Clara clings weakly to her.

LEKI
What now?

DOCTOR
I don't know.

His face falls. [Track 7 ends]

23 INT. BASIC ABODE - DAY
[Track 8: A Duty of Care] The one room with the TARDIS. They have lit every candle they could find, there is a comforting waxy smell. The Doctor and Clara alone. The Doctor has dismantled the base of the psychic test orb. Clara is sitting opposite, her hands trembling.

DOCTOR
Try and put this back together. It should help you recover.

He slides over the electronic pieces and wiring.

CLARA
I could probably make a necklace.

DOCTOR
Good idea.

CLARA
Can you explain again what is going on? Before the Sigh resistance leaders return.

DOCTOR
When a Pharie experiment goes wrong it will appear. The sacrifice of Juhn, instead of his twin Leki, caused it's first summoning. Me, not being part of it's experiment, summoned it a second time. The third time it appears it will decide what it will do with its failed experiment.

CLARA
I am guessing that will be bad.

DOCTOR
When the resistance act there could be even more deaths. Should we go back in time? Defeat the Pharie in the past. Prevent its sabotage of most of the terraformers. Get Leki his brother back?

CLARA
Can we do that? You've never said about doing that before.

DOCTOR
And you've never, ever, thought to ask about doing it.

CLARA
No I haven't. That's odd. Can we, though?

DOCTOR
What would happen if we did?

CLARA
A paradox?

DOCTOR
You say paradox as you have no idea.

CLARA
Do you have an idea?

DOCTOR
Only that things would be different. We would not save Leki's brother, none of these people would even be the same people the chance of….

CLARA
I blew in on a leaf Doctor, remember, I understand. If we alter the past, those we have met today will have never existed.

DOCTOR
God-like power at the press of button and a pull of a lever.

CLARA
And we are having this conversation outside the TARDIS so you are avoiding that temptation?

DOCTOR
I am not often tempted by such things. Are you?

CLARA
These people have experienced years of eugenic experimentation, cullings of anyone around the age of 30, but there are Sereh and Leki, two people in love, two people I don't want to end.

DOCTOR
You will keep your memories.

CLARA
They are real people. I don't want them to be only my memories.

DOCTOR
They will live on in the multiverse.

CLARA
Will they?

DOCTOR
I don't know. The multiverse is another concept of heaven.

CLARA
You fought in a Time War. Wasn't that a battle of Gods across the multiverse?

DOCTOR
It was endless versions of Hell being written and rewritten. Fought with technology without kindness.

CLARA
We are staying, Doctor. We help here. We help now.

Sereh, Leki enter with two women Foane and Jecky. Both are late 20s and dressed in the white suits with blue piping that identifies them as Sighs. Both mixed race. Foane is more African, Jecky more Asian.

LEKI
I couldn't get any help from the Melds, but I am ready.

He has a cylindrical canister in his hand. He is handling it very very gently.

SEREH
This is Foane and Jecky. The women are ready to act.

DOCTOR
Excellent. These are the two leading the diversionary groups.

The Doctor shakes their hands. They are hesitant.

DOCTOR
Foane. Jecky. Thank you.

The two women look both serious and amused by the Doctor. They leave with Leki.

CLARA
You remembered their names, you used actual names.

DOCTOR
It's important, because today they might die.

24 EXT. SQUARE OUTSIDE ABODE - DAY
Leki, Foane and Jecky meet with a hooded figure.

FOANE
You are here. Is it really you?

JECKY
The legend. You're real.

THE WOMAN
Come close. See and touch.

Foane approaches. Hesitantly she looks under The Woman's hood. The Woman is missing her left eye. She has deep black skin, wrinkled with sun damage and age.

THE WOMAN
Touch too.

Hesitantly Foane reaches to The Woman's right shoulder. The Woman has no right arm. Foane gently feels a small hand at The Woman's shoulder.

THE WOMAN
I was born of wild love outside of any dome. Born as I am, with only one eye and a barely grown arm. I am 60 years old. This is what it means to be free of the Pharie.

FOANE
This is what it means to be free.

Jecky steps up. Looks beneath the hood and feels the missing arm.

JECKY
This is what it means to be free.

THE WOMAN
Leki too.

Leki, with great reverence and respect, looks beneath The Woman's hood. Then feels her missing arm. He steps back and bows his head.

THE WOMAN
Look up. There is no hierarchy of Sighs, Melds, Helpers. This is what it means to be free of the Pharie.

LEKI
This is what it means to be free.

THE WOMAN
The time to act is now.

They all bow their heads. [Track 8 ends]

25 INT. BASIC ABODE - DAY
[Track 9: Saving Rigsy] The Doctor sits on the table.

DOCTOR
The first time, a wrong sacrifice was made. At its second appearance, for my death, there was no sacrifice at all.

SEREH
When the Anatomics take a Sigh, it is for death and recycling.

DOCTOR
Recycling. Sacrifice. Different words for different ideologies. There are three recycling points at the boundaries. The Anatomics will take Clara to one, yes? Foane and Jecky will go to the other points. The Pharie will come once more. It will decide whether its experiment here has succeeded or failed. It could continue, abandon or destroy.

SEREH
It is my fault.

LEKI
My brother's choice.

DOCTOR
You were put in a test tube. One experiment of many. By acting differently you yielded an unexpected result. Yes, you have caused the Pharie to come. What you did was not controlled for in its plan. You are greater than the Pharie. It does not know what to do with you. It does not understand love and self sacrifice.

CLARA
Is that what it is trying to understand?

DOCTOR
No. I don't know. I think it might be the opposite.

CLARA
The opposite?

In silence, two Anatomics appear within the house either side of Clara. Needles extended. All, but the Doctor, flinch away.

CLARA
Not again. For...

The needles enter Clara's heart and she and the Anatomics disappear in uncanny silence.

DOCTOR
Where is the nearest recy… Forget it, I've seen the map.

26 EXT. OUTSIDE BASIC ABODE - DAY
The Doctor runs outside and pushes a lady from a single person hexagonal transport. He looks at the controls, flashes the sonic and overrides the autopilot and safeties. It shoots off. in reverse, spins unsteadily, whilst the Doctor gets control, The blue levitation field crackles with power. The Doctor speeds off. [Track 9 ends]

27 EXT. RECYCLING POINT - DAY
[Track 10: Dreams Within Dreams 0:00 - 3:24] Clara is shrink wrapped in plastic to a large white stone slab in the open at the edge of the town. Medical equipment is about. Tubes are inserted into Clara and various flasks and cold storage devices are prepared. Beyond the stone slab fields radiate out. It is just possible to see the hexagonal sections that make up the edge of the dome on the horizon. Fields of wheat, maize and soya. Livestock of cattle, sheep and pigs. Complex, natural, smells. Very controlled, though not intensive, farming. The Doctor arrives, driving erratically. Sereh has almost caught up with more skillful driving.

DOCTOR
Seriously? No one made the connection between recycling and sacrifice?

The cold wind roars and the Pharie appears in the sky above.

DOCTOR
Hello. Quite the big man again, I see.

The sound of running comes. Hundreds of Sigh women, in their white suits with blue piping, are arriving. They are sweating, not aerobically fit, gasping for breath. The Doctor looks at them staggering disheveled to a halt.

DOCTOR
Magnificent! No one kneels. No one. Not one.

The Sigh straighten their backs. Their heavy breathing is like white noise. They are an army.

SEREH
No one was intending to kneel.

Sereh steps in front of the Doctor. And glares up at the Pharie.

SEREH
You will experiment on us no more.

The Pharie roars and beats the sky. The Anatomics step away from Clara and advance slowly towards Sereh.

SEREH
Doctor, we need time.

The Doctor flourishes the sonic, but it has no effect on the Anatomics.

DOCTOR
Psionics beats sonics this time. Leki?

SEREH
Busy. We need more time.

The Anatomics grasp Sereh's arms trying to force her to kneel, yet she continues to resist. Suddenly, she lets out a gut-wrenching shrill shriek as a bone in her left arm snaps.

DOCTOR
Leave her. Try and break me. You have no power here. These people choose their own destiny.

Though she is obviously in excruciating pain, she keeps standing. The Pharie lands, crouching behind the slab. It ignores the Doctor, turns it's giant leathery skull like head and focuses on Sereh. The Anatomics kick Sereh's legs, and they buckle, but now they hold her up.

DOCTOR
Stop this! I kneel! Look at me!

The Doctor kneels. None of the women do. Despite this, the Pharie continues to ignore him. Reaching down it scoops the pale bleeding form of Sereh up to study her.
There is a huge explosion from the centre of the town. A column of fire roars up from where the temple had stood. The column of fire hits the top of the dome and spreads across the sky. The burning from the explosion blocks out the artificial daylight and everything becomes lit a hellish red.
The Pharie roars, beating its wings, it flies off with Sereh. The Anatomics are wrestled to the ground by Sigh women. The Doctor rushes to release Clara. Some women start dismantling the Anatomics. More Sighs help disconnect Clara and pull her free. Others have bottles of acid which they pour onto the stone - which steams then cracks. The smell is powerful and sulfuric. The Doctor is firmly pushed out of the way by the competent women.

CLARA
What's happening?

DOCTOR
An awful lot more than I had anticipated.

The Woman arrives with several others, both women and men, several in their 40s all dressed in natural clothes. Some have middle age spread. Some are tall, some are short. The Woman proudly displays her missing eye, deformed limb and wrinkled skin. She holds a communication shard in her tiny hand, twists it between her mouth and ear, relaying orders and listening to reports. She comes up whilst a Sigh briefly checks Clara physically.

THE WOMAN
Foane and Jecky report other recycle points destroyed. Leki has destroyed the Temple. We don't think he survived.

DOCTOR
You organised all this?

THE WOMAN
The explosives and the acids were prepared.

DOCTOR
You must have been preparing for years.

THE WOMAN
You are stating the obvious.

CLARA
Sometimes his exposition is useful.

DOCTOR
Clara. It's not over yet.

28 EXT. OUTSIDE THE TEMPLE - DAY
Leki walks defiantly out of the hot rubble from the Temple. It seems miraculous he could be there unharmed. Revealed in the rubble is the very solid, robust, colony landing craft. The Pharie thumps down from the sky, crouching. It puts Sereh gently on the ground and leans forward its terrifying giant eyes staring at Leki.
Leki ignores it and rushes over to Sereh.

LEKI
No...

SEREH
It only hurts when I breathe.

LEKI
Keep still. Can you be made better?

SEREH
I am… of the Sigh. Of course.

The Pharie roars, catching Leki's attention.

PHARIE
WHY DO YOU DEFY ME?

SEREH
Always..

LEKI
We have always defied you.

SEREH
Failed…

LEKI
Your experiment has failed.

There is a long silence.

PHARIE
WHAT HAS FAILED WILL BE DESTROYED.

SEREH
Failed…

LEKI
I don't…

SEREH
You have failed. Not us. Not the experiment. You.

The Pharie pauses a long time, again, to answer.

PHARIE
NO. THE STRANGER ARRIVED. HE SPOILED THE EXPERIMENT. CONTAMINATED WITH OUTSIDE KNOWLEDGE. OUTSIDE TECHNOLOGY. NOT PART OF THE EXPERIMENT.

SEREH
No. It was we who defied you, because we are more than your experiment.

Sereh's body is broken on the ground. Leki is supporting her head. Her eyes are feverish with pain, but her voice gets briefly stronger.

SEREH
Acid and explosives were already prepared. I.. We…

LEKI
With my brother, Juhn, they defied you. Tricked you. Your failure is because of us. Not the Doctor.

Again the Pharie takes an age to respond.

PHARIE
NO. THIS DOCTOR ARRIVED. THE FAILURE BEGAN.

SEREH
The acid and explosives were pre…

[Track 10 ends] Sereh drifts unconscious.

LEKI
My brother chose to take my place, before the Doctor arrived. Acid and explosives have been prepared for years!

Another ominous pause.

PHARIE
THE DOCTOR CAME. THIS EXPERIMENT FAILED. IT SHALL BE DESTROYED.

[Track 11: Defending The Earth] The Woman, with the Doctor clinging on behind her, powers towards them driving the single transport the Doctor had sonicked for speed.

THE WOMAN
Wait.

The Pharie turns, slowly, reluctantly towards her

THE WOMAN
This woman, Sereh and this man's brother, Juhn, were never in your control.

PHARIE
WHO ARE YOU?

THE WOMAN
You do not know? Your experiment and you do not know?

PHARIE
YOU ARE A CONTAMINANT.

THE WOMAN
I was not planned in your experiment. Outside the dome are many born and living free, living despite high radiation levels, living to old age. Not just surviving. Prospering. Not just escaped from this settlement, but across the planet. Everywhere you have failed.

PHARIE
THEY ARE CONTAMINANTS.

THE WOMAN
Every Temple and every recycling stone, in every settlement, is being destroyed.

The Pharie flaps into the air and in a series of blinks witnesses the destruction of Temples and the melting of stones. People hugging and cheering. Sighs, Melds, Helpers and others from outside of the domes all together. Faces ripped from Meldan's to reveal the Anatomics within. Anatomics smashed, burned - some Melds using an Anatomic's head like a football. The Pharie thumps back to the ground.

PHARIE
THE DOCTOR CAME. CONTAMINATED THE EXPERIMENTS.

DOCTOR
No, I didn't. You don't get it. I don't know this lady. I didn't know about the acid or what was going to happen in the other domes. I have never been to the other settlements. This rebellion was always going to happen… You need to understand that.

PHARIE
YOU LIE.

WOMAN
I speak for all the Settlements. I planned the rebellion. We are all free of you. I do not lie.

PHARIE
NO. THE EXPERIMENT WAS CONTAMINATED. IT WILL BE DESTROYED.

The Doctor has moved quietly up to Leki and whispers.

DOCTOR
I think it's thoughts are a tiny bit cloudy.

LEKI
I don't understand….

DOCTOR
Coffee gone to its...

Leki looks up, cradling Sereh, his mind reaches into that of the Pharie. He senses the distinct chemical reactions in its alien brain and… purifies. The Pharie screams. It scratches at its head, tearing it's flesh. It staggers. Starts to shrink, but a cold wind blows in.

DOCTOR
Everyone. Back if you can!

The Doctor stays with Sereh and Leki. The Pharie shrinks to only 20 feet tall. It becomes covered in frost. Frozen still for a beat. Then cracks and crumbles into many hard bloody lumps. [Track 11 ends]

29 INT. BASIC ABODE - EVENING
[Track 12: In A Way, She's A Hybrid] The sound of partying and singing comes from outside. The Doctor enters followed by Clara who stops at the door to look back into the street.

CLARA
The outsiders have shown the Sighs how to make alcohol. I don't think those inside the dome can handle it.

DOCTOR
Come on, time to go. A boyfriend to bore you. Tiny human minds to educate in tiny ways.

CLARA
Come over here, Doctor.

Reluctantly he joins her at the doorway. They look at the crowds, hear the sounds and breathe in the smells of celebration.

CLARA
These people are happy. Free. See it. Share it.

The Doctor goes over reluctantly. Possibly he has the ghost of a smile, which he hides.

DOCTOR
These people freed themselves, let them celebrate.

CLARA
No. Leki told me, how you told him, how to kill the Pharie.

DOCTOR
I didn't want to kill the Pharie. I never want to kill anything.

CLARA
I mean, you had no choice.

DOCTOR
There's always a choice. It didn't learn it was wrong. No other Pharie learned from this mistake. It was powerful so it's mistakes are bigger. What I wanted was a good Pharie, not a dead one.

CLARA
We did good here. Listen to the celebration.

DOCTOR
I did not save Juhn. Also, because we were here, the Pharie used us as an excuse for the failure of its experiment. If we had not come, the rebellion would have occurred anyway and the Pharie would have had to accept its failure and learn from it.

CLARA
Do you know that?

DOCTOR
Of course I don't know that. No one will ever, now, know that.

CLARA
When we arrived, you said to Juhn that purifying water was a very minor psychic power.

DOCTOR
It is, but it can be used to kill. You think I should have taught Juhn, right then, that he could kill with a thought? Then Juhn could have killed the Pharie when it first appeared.

CLARA
We had only just arrived, you could not know what was going to happen.

Quietly the Doctor replies.

DOCTOR
I did not save Juhn. Do you still think I did good here?

CLARA
You did your best. That is all anyone can do.

DOCTOR
How could Leki have survived the explosion of the temple? He can, now, kill with a thought.

CLARA
Leki is a good man. Not some kind of monster.

DOCTOR
We hardly know him. Should we go forward in time to see what he does with his power?

CLARA
I'm tired. You're miserable. Let's go home. You owe me a new phone.

They enter the TARDIS and dematerialise. Outside a true dawn is rising as the hexagons of the dome open to a real red sky. [Track 12 ends]

30 INT. HOSPITAL UNIT - EVENING
Leki is beside Sereh's bed. All her limbs are splintered. It is warm in the hospital. Sereh is unconscious. He studies her for a minute then concentrates. Her eyes open.

SEREH
Leki are you…

LEKI
I'm here. Everything is alright.

SEREH
The pain is...

LEKI
That's okay. You can rest..

[Track 13: Welcome To Heaven] He looks at her and she is instantly asleep. He looks at his coffee and it begins to flash, brown/clear, brown/clear, faster and faster until it becomes an indistinct blur. Leki smiles. [Track 13 ends]
