1 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
[Track 1: Almost The End] Suspense. The courtroom is a long, elegant hall, with drapes embracing an ethereal light into the room, as the windows present the star systems dancing around outside - this courthouse is based on an asteroid of some kind.

2 INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT
A short woman in a brown suit and heels hurries along - the people in the corridor stop their conversations to stare at her.

3 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
Only the accuser is talking - from his clothes and manner, he appears to be an authority figure, like the police of this society. The jury members look shamefully at the defendant, who is not seen.

JUDGE
Does the defendant accept the points made by the accuser?

The defendant stands up angrily - it's the Doctor!

DOCTOR
No. No, I do not!

JUDGE
Sit down.

DOCTOR
No!

The Judge presses a button underneath her desk. On the Doctor's wrist are handcuffs, which shock him momentarily, and he sits back down.

JUDGE
Very good.

The Doctor scowls.

4 INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT
The woman clutches tightly to a clipboard, filled with scribbles and different scraps of information.

5 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
The Judge looks at the empty seat next to the Doctor.

JUDGE
Your attorney seems to have failed you. You have no-one to assist your case?

DOCTOR
No, your honour. You know what English teachers are like, never reaching their deadlines in time.

JUDGE
Okay. Lord Doctor of Time, on behalf of the society of Qutov, for the safety and wellbeing of all those concerned, I find you…

The double doors at the back swing open.

CLARA
Objection!

Clara strides down the hallway, attracting murmurs from the jury.

CLARA
Silence in the court!

The Doctor raises an eyebrow, as Clara grabs the attention of the entire courtroom.

JUDGE
Who the hell are you?

CLARA
Your Honour, my name is Clara Oswald. And I'm here to turn the tables. I'm here to save the day. What I'm really trying to say, your Honour, is…

She looks over to the Doctor, then back to the judge.

CLARA
I'm here to prove my client innocent.

She winks. [Track 1 ends]

ROLL TITLES

6 EXT. ASTEROID SURFACE - NIGHT
A space shuttle lands outside a futuristic courthouse, looking similar to a church but made from a strong, cast iron metal. The blue police box stands proudly on an outcrop of rock upon the asteroid.

JUDGE (oc)
You're what?!

7 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
[Track 2: A Dying Husband] Clara sits beside the Doctor, placing her clipboard down.

CLARA
I said, I'm here to prove the Doctor innocent.

The Doctor and Clara talk to the side.

DOCTOR
You took your time.

CLARA
I'm here now, aren't I?

DOCTOR
Just.

CLARA
Would you have rather I didn't come at all?

DOCTOR
Depends, how much have you got?

CLARA
Everything.

JUDGE
If you're quite finished!

They turn back to the Judge.

CLARA
I apologise. Do go on.

JUDGE
I'm afraid that you're too late, uh, what was it? Miss… Oswald? In any case, I was just about to give a verdict.

CLARA
But you haven't given one yet. And I have evidence to support my client's case.

JUDGE
You've had your chance to give your case, and you weren't here.

CLARA
Ten minutes. That's all I need, ten minutes, to prove my client innocent.

JUDGE
Hmm…

She pulls out an electronic device, and pushes some buttons.

JUDGE
Ten minutes. Go.

She smirks.

CLARA
Exhibit A!

She holds up a picture. She throws it down. It zooms into the picture.

8 INT. TARDIS
Clara looks through her camera at the photo she just took. The Doctor turns round.

DOCTOR
Do you mind? I'm trying to operate a complicated space-time machine here. I don't need flash photography-

CLARA
Sorry, sorry, I'm excited! We haven't gone on a holiday in ages, and the journey's the best part! Especially in a "complicated space-time machine".

DOCTOR
So, any specific time periods?

CLARA
You're the time travelling genius, you decide! America, don't care when!

DOCTOR
Hmm.

He furrows his brow, then his eyes sparkle.

DOCTOR
Ohh, yes! Perfect spot for a picnic, sightseeing, the lot!

CLARA
When? Where?

DOCTOR
Just you wait!

The Doctor inputs some co-ordinates, then throws a lever forward. The TARDIS begins to materialise. Clara giggles.

CLARA
We there?

DOCTOR
Have a look.

Clara runs to the doors.

CLARA
The bright lights, the bustling people...

9 EXT. HARBOUR - DAY
Clara pokes her head out.

CLARA
The abandoned harbour with old boats everywhere.

She and the Doctor walk out.

CLARA
Doctor, where are we?

DOCTOR
Bedloe's Island!

Clara glares at him, unimpressed.

CLARA
You've failed this trip.

DOCTOR
Also known as Liberty Island!

CLARA
Wait, seriously?

The Doctor hands her a brochure.

CLARA
Where'd that come from?

DOCTOR
My pocket!

CLARA
You just happened to have a brochure of Liberty Island in your pocket when you just came up with the idea?

The Doctor stutters.

CLARA
Oh my god. You wanted to come here all along, didn't you? You just tricked me into thinking I chose the place.

DOCTOR
Perhaps.

CLARA
For God's sake! Come on then, take me to the Statue of Liberty.

She drags him off. He starts to protest.

DOCTOR
Uh, actually...

Clara marches off, fixing her gaze upon the brochure. She opens it to a double page with the Statue on it. She gets into exactly the same position as the picture.

CLARA
Behold, the Statue of...

She pulls down the Statue of Liberty, to reveal… [Track 2 ends]

CLARA
Nothing. Doctor, where is the Statue of Liberty?

In front of them is an empty field.

DOCTOR
Well, I did try to say-

CLARA
What have you done?

[Track 3: Something in the Spacesuit] Gunfire shoots across the field, and the Doctor pins Clara to the ground.

CLARA
What the hell?!

DOCTOR
Stay down!

CLARA
Who's shooting at us?

The Doctor looks over in the direction of the gunfire.

DOCTOR
They aren't!

There's a group of about twelve men, of Irish descent, all with thick facial hair, some bearded, some raggedy hair, but they're all wearing brown overalls. In their hands are some rather rudimentary pistols and pitchforks. The Doctor grabs Clara's hand and drags her towards the harbour. Clara points in the opposite direction.

CLARA
The TARDIS is that way!

DOCTOR
We're not going to the TARDIS!

CLARA
Why not?!

DOCTOR
Don't you want to know who they are shooting at?!

CLARA
Not if it's going to get us killed!

They make their way along the harbour, stray bullets splintering the wood and ripping it apart. One of the wood planks gives way and Clara drops down, but the Doctor pulls her back up almost instantly.

CLARA
Worst holiday ever!

DOCTOR
Don't prejudge, we haven't even tried the local cuisine yet!

CLARA
Come on!

DOCTOR
There was this one time where I went to Paris in the 80s-

CLARA
Doctor, seriously, shut up!

Clara points to an unused factory directly in front of her.

CLARA
We can take shelter there!

They keep sprinting forward, and as they reach it, they look around for a door. Clara runs past it, but the Doctor grabs her and shoves her inside.

10 INT. WAREHOUSE SIDE ENTRANCE - DAY
The Doctor and Clara press themselves up against the door whilst he takes out his sonic and uses it on the doorknob. [Track 3 ends] However, the Doctor's face gives Clara cause for concern.

CLARA
What is it?

DOCTOR
This door doesn't have a lock.

CLARA
Hang on, wait there.

Clara runs off and finds a small beam of wood, ramming it into the door and blocking it.

CLARA
That should do.

They catch their breath. [Track 4: Death is Locked In]

CLARA
Okay, Doctor. Fess up. Where are we?

DOCTOR
Well. It's 1863, not 1963.

CLARA
Okay…?

DOCTOR
So for one thing, the Statue of Liberty hasn't been built yet.

CLARA
Got that, what else?

DOCTOR
Secondly-

A distant slam silences both the Doctor and Clara. Both of them share worried expressions.

CLARA
Someone else is here.

Slowly, they edge through the warehouse, hiding behind shelves, as they hear a few whispers and running footsteps. The Doctor nods at the wall they're currently cowering behind, insinuating that the other people are on the other side. He gestures for them to run around it in three, two, one-
The Doctor and Clara scream, as do a group of black men - as the yells cease, both groups look defensive at the other. They notice that these men - around five in number - look sweaty and scared. Two of them are middle aged, one fashioning a thick moustache and one of them balding under a cap, but the other three are around 25 or younger, very athletic and fit, aside from one. They're armed with gardening equipment - the fatter man, Meriday, has a trowel; one of the middle aged men, the one with a moustache called Tandey holds a pair of scissors; the other middle aged man, Grafton, grips a fishing net, and the remaining two, Edgar and Ray, each possess one half of a broom.

CLARA
Hiya. We're not going to hurt you.

MERIDAY
Then what you doing sneaking up on us for? Keep back!

CLARA
What are you going to do with a trowel? Throw dirt at me?

DOCTOR
That's not helpful right now. I'm the Doctor and this is Clara.

EDGAR
Pleased to make your acquaintance, ma'am.

He flirts a little with Clara, who's clearly not interested.

MERIDAY
Doctor? Thought you posh folks had gone off to war already.

CLARA
War?

DOCTOR
Like I said, it's 1863.

CLARA
What happens in 1863?

TANDEY
You're British, ain't you? I recognise an accent like that anywhere.

CLARA
Yep.

TANDEY
That's surprising. Ain't had a lotta support from you recently.

CLARA
And who are you?

TANDEY
I'm Tandey, that's Ray, Edgar, Grafton and Meriday.

MERIDAY
Hey.

RAY
You serious? You're not after us?

CLARA
We're just on holiday, the Doctor just got the dates a bit mixed up.

DOCTOR
Who is after you?

TANDEY
Bad time to go on vacation. This is important - those fellas out on the dock, did they see ya?

CLARA
Well… Kinda.

TANDEY
Okay, we need to start heading out.

RAY
I saw a fire escape upstairs.

There's clamours from the men outside as the door behind them is smashed through.

DOCTOR
Then you lead the way.

The group run off, climbing up the stairs. A flash of white transitions into-

11 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
The judge glares at Clara, annoyed and with an impatient sigh.

JUDGE
Is this necessary? This is a court session trying a murder suspect, Miss Oswald, not storytime.

CLARA
I think you'll find this is.

JUDGE
Then please keep to the facts. This has no relation to the current crime - time travelling blue boxes, war, missing statues - are you sure you're in the right room? Please explain where you actually are during this story, and keep it brief.

CLARA
Funny you say that…

Clara places a book on the table.

12 INT. LANDING - DAY
The group of men are trying to break through the door, whilst Clara is rummaging through the shelves. She picks up that same book, and flicks through it. The Doctor snatches it off her and places it back.

CLARA
Doctor, this stock - it's from December 1860. Why did the workers abandon the factory and the stock? Why has nothing shipped from here in the past three years?

The Doctor drags Clara to the side and the pair whisper.

CLARA
What's going on?

DOCTOR
According to Grafton, the date specifically is the 13th July 1863. Bedloe's Island is just 8 miles away from New York, where the Draft Riots are taking place.

CLARA
Draft Riots?

DOCTOR
We're in the third year of the American Civil War. On March 3rd 1863, President Lincoln passed the Enrollment Act, conscripting working class citizens into the war.

CLARA
You're saying that lot out there are soldiers? Trying to get them into the military or something? They don't seem like soldiers. More farmers.

DOCTOR
That's cos they're not. The Emancipation Proclamation contradicted the draft - African Americans had a choice to sign up, but couldn't be forced into it.

GRAFTON
So those guys out there are scared we're gonna steal their jobs. And do it better.

MERIDAY
And knowing their lazy asses, we would.

EDGAR
Shut your mouth, Meriday - you're the laziest of all.

They laugh. There's a loud crash from downstairs, and the men flood inside. Meanwhile, Ray manages to burst through the door, and ushers everyone outside.

13 EXT. BALCONY - DAY
Once on a balcony, they hide behind boxes as they crawl along to a door at the end, which opens up onto the fire escape.

14 EXT. HARBOUR - DAY
They run across the harbour, every now and then looking back towards the warehouse to make sure they aren't being followed. [Track 4 ends]

CLARA
Where are we going now?

TANDEY
Back to Manhattan.

DOCTOR
Where all the riots are?

TANDEY
My wife's still there. Get in the boat!

They all climb into a boat, unmooring it from the post.

CLARA
Your wife?

They push away from the harbour and begin to sail away.

CUT TO:

15 EXT. HUDSON RIVER - DAY
[Track 5: Madam Mayor] They sit in the boat patiently, as it makes its way towards New York.

TANDEY
Maryann is my wife. We planned to hide in a safehouse on the opposite side of Bedloe, when the workers started getting aggravated, but on the way over, she vanished. It's been a week since then, and I've decided to go find her.

CLARA
All of you?

EDGAR
Tandey was kind enough to let us stay at the safehouse with them. The property's his. Least we could do was help him out.

TANDEY
And I think it adds to the risk, but whatever. What the heck do I know?

Tandey huffs, clearly out of breath, and Ray takes over the rowing for him.

TANDEY
Thanks. Hey, we all need to watch ourselves when we arrive at the bay. Those guys are dangerous. We just got a sneak preview of that over on the island. Imagine that but all over the city.

RAY
Just two days ago, on Lexington Avenue, I caught wind of a mob burning down buildings, police precincts, houses… I've never seen riots that vicious. What it must've been like… goddamn. Must've been terrifying.

GRAFTON
I understand their frustration but… there are children, innocent people. They think we're the enemies, but we don't want this. We didn't ask to get our rights through war or bloodshed or death, but it had to be done. We're lucky, we're free. But there are people in the South who ain't. And those white men can't be throwing hissy fits to help us. It's not fair on them to be forced into the army. But now they know what it's like to be forced into slavery. And instead of taking out on the Government and us, they should be taking it out on the people who started this damn war in the first place.

They all take a moment of silence, thinking about the terrors inflicted over America. [Track 5 ends]

DOCTOR
I'm sorry.

GRAFTON
Yeah, well. Nuffin' you can do about it. You ain't even a citizen.

DOCTOR
That's an understatement. Not even from Earth.

MERIDAY
Huh?

DOCTOR
Joke. Usually I'm opposed to them, but that might help the situation.

Meriday shakes his head.

16 EXT. NEW YORK - DAY
[Track 6: Big Fat Liar 1:03 - 2:18] Pan across industrial New York, smoke billowing from countless buildings across the city - it's a lot quieter, with the iconic skyscrapers missing from the horizon. In their place are smaller houses and structures made from brick, stone and wood. Instead of cars and planes roaring, or the bright lights of Times Square or Grand Central Terminal, horses ride on a rather flat road, with basic stone pavements, and there are few civilians parading the streets after the chaos over the past few days.

17 EXT. BEACH - DAY
The boat pulls up on the shore, and the group help each other out. They run over the pebbles towards the roads above them.

CLARA
It's a lot different to my time.

DOCTOR
We're about ten years too early for the Gilded Age. Capitalism blows up, politics leads the headlines and New York is never the same again.

Strangers stare at them, fear and paranoia weighting their eyes. She leans over to Edgar.

CLARA
What are they staring at?

EDGAR
Us. They think it's weird that black men freely roam the streets with what's going on; they think we might go about starting fights and protests.

CLARA
I'm sorry.

EDGAR
Don't be, I get it all the time.

CLARA
But you shouldn't. It's not okay. Things won't last like this, you know.

The Doctor overhears Clara's conversation, and begins to interject.

CLARA
Maybe not in this lifetime, but-

DOCTOR
Ahem. So, where do we start? The police?

TANDEY
Ha, you think they'll help us out? I don't know how things go over in Britain, sir, but in these parts, you can bet your ass that they won't be in a hurry to find a random black woman.

DOCTOR
Do you have to keep swearing?

TANDEY
You bet your damn ass I do.

Clara laughs, as the Doctor rolls his eyes.

TANDEY
My apartment. Maybe there'll be something there.

CLARA
So how do we get there? A taxi?

MERIDAY
A what?

Meriday looks confused, and Clara pats his shoulder.

CLARA
Don't worry about it.

TANDEY
We'll walk. It ain't too far.

The group wanders off down the road. [Track 6 ends]

18 INT. APARTMENT HALLWAY - DAY
They climb the flight of stairs out onto the landing. Tandey approaches his apartment and unlocks the door.

CLARA
Why do you have a flat above a clothes shop?

TANDEY
When you look like me, very little opportunities are available to you. You take what you can get. It might not be much, but it's a lot more than what many black men can get. Even in this day and age, with our President fighting for rights, we're strangers in our own lands.

Tandey unlocks the door, and peers inside…

19 INT. TANDEY'S APARTMENT - DAY
They step inside, and are horrified to find-
BEEP BEEP BEEP!

20 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
The Judge holds up her beeping timer.

JUDGE
Time's up. Story's over.

CLARA
Oh, okay. No worries. Nice to meet you, your Honour. See you in prison, Doctor. I'll see myself out.

She starts walking down the aisle. [Track 7: Eye Spy]

JUDGE
By the way...

Clara stops. And smiles.

JUDGE
...Just out of curiosity, what was in that room?

Clara turns round.

CLARA
I'm so glad you asked. May I?

She sits back down and resumes her story.

21 INT. TANDEY'S APARTMENT - DAY
They step inside, and are horrified to find the apartment trashed. The neutral beige wallpaper on the wall has been scratched off to reveal dusty, exposed brick, the furniture has been thrown across the floor, which have shards of glass from the lights sprinkled down onto them, and rusted nails sticking out.

TANDEY
What the heck?

DOCTOR
Your place is in a bit of a state. Watch your step.

TANDEY
This isn't… How did this happen?

MERIDAY
Burglars? Part of the riots?

GRAFTON
The door was still intact.

MERIDAY
They came in through the balcony.

GRAFTON
Let's see.

He opens the window with relative ease, thrusting his head out and glancing all around.

GRAFTON
Nope. No way to climb up.

MERIDAY
Then they climbed down.

RAY
Think we're a regular PI, do we, Meriday?

DOCTOR
All very good thoughts, Meriday, but no.

The Doctor presses himself to the floor, inspecting a small trail of slime across the floor. He picks up a small pile of goop, compressed together like an animal shed its skin, getting it all over his hands.

CLARA
What's that?

DOCTOR
No idea. We should take it back to the TARDIS to analyse.

CLARA
Which is back on Liberty Island, if you don't remember.

DOCTOR
Yes.

CLARA
About half an hour away.

DOCTOR
Yes.

CLARA
And swarming with angry-

DOCTOR
Yes, yes, I get the point.

Tandey pushes against another door, which is hanging off its hinges.

22 INT. TANDEY'S BEDROOM - DAY
He looks inside, and it's more of the same - the bed has been broken, and blood splattered all over the walls.

TANDEY
Oh my god.

The Doctor joins him.

DOCTOR
Blood. Some human, some…

He notices dark green stains.

DOCTOR
Some really not human.

He notices a sliver of light behind the wardrobe.

DOCTOR
What do you do for a living, Tandey?

TANDEY
I work on a building site.

The Doctor slowly opens the cupboard doors, and sees a hammer laid beside a hole out into the open, with a fire escape down to the street below. [Track 7 ends]

23 EXT. MANHATTAN STREET - DAY
[Track 8: The World Looks To The Skies] They run out of the shop along the pavement towards the fire escape. The road is a three-way intersection, rather busy, but not as crowded as it would usually be.

TANDEY
Here!

DOCTOR
So she came from this way, but where did she go next?

CLARA
And why couldn't she go out the front way?

DOCTOR
I think something broke in, threatened her. Hence the blood splatters. I'll go back up, look for anything else. You see where else she could've gone.

CLARA
Alright. Stay out of trouble.

DOCTOR
Always. You too.

GRAFTON
I'll go with the old man.

MERIDAY
Same. I'm not too good at running.

GRAFTON
We can tell.

The Doctor, Grafton and Meriday head back upstairs. Clara spots a building opposite, that has been incinerated and smashed, the stock battered and tape all around it. She grabs a local and pulls them close.

CLARA
Excuse me - what happened to that building?

LOCAL
I dunno, couple nights back. Buncha thugs came and robbed it. Probably looked a lot like your company.

EDGAR
What'd you say?

Tandey and Ray hold Edgar back.

CLARA
What happened to the people who did it?

LOCAL
I wasn't there. Look, get your hands off me, woman!

EDGAR
Don't speak to her that way!

LOCAL
What you saying, boy?!

CLARA
Hey, hey, no need to argue!

LOCAL
Too right. What you thinking?

The man saunters off, and Clara pulls Edgar back, who tries to lunge at him.

CLARA
We need you here with us, alright? Ignore him.

EDGAR
Yeah, yeah.

CLARA
What's down that way?

Clara points down one of the roads.

TANDEY
Police precinct.

CLARA
So robbers wouldn't have gone that way, gotta…

RAY
The financial district is down that way… they could've gone more stores - the looters are angry at the upper class, government types.

CLARA
Good thinking, Ray! So if she saw the robbers escaping, she would've gone away from it, along… along here!

Ray sprints off, leaving Clara, Edgar and Tandey trying to keep up.

TANDEY
All these young men dashing about…

CLARA
How old are you?

TANDEY
Just turned forty.

CLARA
Don't suppose she would've gone down the sewers?

TANDEY
We may be poor, but we ain't primitive, no matter what some people might like to believe. My wife wouldn't have gone down there.

CLARA
Is there anywhere she could've gone for safety? A friend's house, or somewhere like that?

TANDEY
I- I- I don't know. No, wait! Her brother owns this cafe.

CLARA
Let's try there.

TANDEY
It's on the other side of the city. We won't get there by running.

CLARA
Okay, so… no taxis, no TARDIS, no buses… God, I miss the 21st Century.

EDGAR
Huh?

CLARA
Nothing, nothing. Trains! Tell me you've got trains.

TANDEY
Yeah, but there's hardly any for public use. They're mainly for shipping goods out to the front lines.

CLARA
Then let's sneak on one!

EDGAR
Woah, woah.

TANDEY
You're kidding, right?

CLARA
Let's go!

Tandey sighs, and runs off. A small puddle of slime, bubbling and bulging, similar to the one in the apartment, is slowly slithering after them.

24 EXT. MANHATTAN STATION - DAY
Boxes and crates of ammunition, weapons and other resources fill the station platform, surrounded by soldiers, who are stacking the crates onto the train - they are dressed in the standard Union uniform; a long blue coat decorated with dirtied straps and buckles, tightly tucked into a black belt and fashioning a big rucksack. From the other side, the four creep through a few trees.

CLARA
There it is.

EDGAR
Oh, my god.

CLARA
What?

EDGAR
Sorry, I… It's those things… I've always been…

The train whistle blows, and the soldiers clear the platform.

RAY
It's moving.

EDGAR
I can't do this!

CLARA
You two, get on the train.

TANDEY
You sure?

CLARA
We're right behind you!

Tandey and Ray dash over to the train and clamber aboard.

CLARA
Are you coming?

EDGAR
I can't.

CLARA
It's fine if you can't, but we don't have time for you to think about it.

The wheels start to turn, and the train puffs smoke, chugging away. It accelerates, as Edgar stares at it in terror.

EDGAR
...Yeah. Yes, I'm coming.

CLARA
Good man! Come on.

Clara and Edgar chase after the train as it builds speed. The latter, being fairly well-built and muscular, manages to jump on, his knees scraping the metal as he finds his footing and grabs onto the rail. He reaches out for Clara, who's becoming more distant with each passing second. Suddenly, he manages to grab her hand and pulls her up, as the door swings open and they throw themselves in. [Track 8 ends]

25 INT. TRAIN - DAY
Clara falls onto Edgar, and the pair groan. Edgar soon realises his position, and grins, obviously into it. She pulls herself up and dusts herself off, glancing at him.

CLARA
I should tell you. I have a boyfriend.

EDGAR
Oh, uh… sorry. Didn't mean to-

CLARA
It's fine, honestly. I should make sure he's okay. Let's go check in with the others first.

26 INT. TANDEY'S APARTMENT - DAY
As Grafton and Meriday try to tidy the place, making it more habitable and a safer atmosphere, the Doctor paces around nervously.

MERIDAY
Doc, you might wanna cool it there.

DOCTOR
It doesn't make sense. How did they get in? Unless she didn't escape through the hole, whatever it was broke in- No, no, the hole was made from the inside. Why are you tampering with the evidence?

GRAFTON
You being so jittery ain't gonna be good for you. You're going to trip and hit your head over something. Besides, if we find a clue, we'll let you know.

The Time Lord glowers.

DOCTOR
There's something wrong. Okay! Meriday, I'm going to need your help.

The Doctor drags Meriday across the room.

MERIDAY
Oh! Uh, okay. Whaddya need?

DOCTOR
Imagine you're Tandey's wife. You and him are going to meet up at the safehouse on Bedloe, but something goes wrong. What went wrong?

MERIDAY
Missed the boat?

DOCTOR
Yes! How did you go over there?

MERIDAY
Oh, oh-

DOCTOR
Come on, come on, we don't have all day.

MERIDAY
There's a fella off of Bowery. If you name the right price, he'll get you out of town if you're in trouble.

DOCTOR
Sounds sketchy.

MERIDAY
He's a really nice guy. He's one of our only allies here.

DOCTOR
Why didn't you wait for her?

MERIDAY
Those Irishmen saw us coming, we didn't have time.

DOCTOR
Right, right. So she misses the boat for whatever reason, comes back here for when your mate comes back. Something changed; she never met up with him.

MERIDAY
Unless he did - he kidnapped her!

[Track 9: The Spy Master 0:00 - 2:35 (fadeout needed)]

DOCTOR
Hang on, hang on, I'm deducting.

MERIDAY
Am I actually needed, or are you just ranting to me?

DOCTOR
Yes. So, you come back, you're waiting for him to arrive. What would you do?

MERIDAY
Go about my daily business. Wouldn't go outside, of course. I'd make sure the door was locked.

DOCTOR
No forced entry, so they didn't come in that way.

MERIDAY
God, it's so stuffy in here.

GRAFTON
Don't take the Lord's name in vain.

DOCTOR
Open a window.

GRAFTON
A please would be...

Grafton's eyes tell of a sudden realisation.

GRAFTON
The window!

Grafton runs back to the window.

GRAFTON
You were right, Meriday. There wasn't a way up, so she didn't have a reason to lock this window - but there was a way down.

DOCTOR
The roof. They climbed down from the roof.

They jump out onto the balcony.

27 EXT. BALCONY - DAY
They speed up the stairs from the balcony, approaching the roof.

28 EXT. ROOFTOP - DAY
The Doctor takes out his sonic, and scans around, as the other two men admire the still-forming New York City skyline. They notice a large scorch mark on one of the stone pavings on the roof.

DOCTOR
Oh, I don't like this. The readings I'm getting off the sonic are very nasty indeed.

GRAFTON
The what?

DOCTOR
Scientific utensil. Long story, can't be bothered to explain it. But this here… this is the effect of a short-range teleport. Burnt out. Well, I say short-range, I mean. Short in cosmic terms.

MERIDAY
Wha?

DOCTOR
A planet hopper. If someone has this, they could jump from one planet to the next. I really don't like where this is going…

He reads the sonic again.

DOCTOR
This teleport has been used a total of… seventeen times. If I feed it back to all the planets close enough to jump to… That brings the source back to… In this age… Oh, no. Usang Jurro. If Usang Jurro is here...

MERIDAY
Doc, you gotta start explaining yourself.

DOCTOR
He's a criminal. A very dirty one. I chased him halfway across the galaxy once, I heard he only recently got out on parole. He's a serial murderer, and to escape imperial adjudicators, he assimilates the DNA of his victims-

A zap fries the sonic, and he drops it, his hand burned. Two figures beam down in a shaft of blue light - they wear thick black armour and restrain the Doctor. They speak in a dark, robotic voice.

ADJUDICATOR
Suspect located. Suspect restrained.

DOCTOR
Ah, right on time.

MERIDAY
Woah, leave him alone!

Meriday charges at the figures, but one batters him across the roof.

GRAFTON
Where did they come from?

DOCTOR
Imperial adjudicators, like I said. They're hunting down Jurro, aren't you? I'm not him, I promise.

ADJUDICATOR
Statement rejected. Advanced technology detected near transmat area.

DOCTOR
Scan my DNA - I'm not human, but I'm not from Qutov either.

GRAFTON
Qutov?

DOCTOR
Jurro's home planet.

The Doctor sticks out his palm, and one of the adjudicators takes out a device, scanning.

ADJUDICATOR
Traces of Qutov assimilation detected.

DOCTOR
Idiot. I touched the- IDIOT!

GRAFTON Doctor!

DOCTOR
Find Clara! It's possible that Tandey's wife could have been assimilated!

The adjudicators clench the Doctor's arms, and they disappear in the same way that they appeared, leaving the two men astounded at the spectacle they just witnessed.

29 INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE - EVENING
The train speeds along at a relaxing pace, as the city passes them by. Clara is on the phone, talking discreetly to Danny Pink, whilst the three Americans sit in a booth, discussing amongst each other.

RAY
What happened back there, Ed?

EDGAR
You know, I just… These machines, they- they bring back memories. There's a reason I don't want to go back to that war.

RAY
Back?

EDGAR
I served a while back, over in Gettysburg. The stuff I saw… those damned trains. I was unloading materials, and we got ambushed. The whole place erupted in flames. I barely made it out with my life. I swore once I got home that I would never fight again, but here I am, hardly keeping my temper because I was a coward.

He wipes a tear away. Flashes of a battlefield wash over his mind, explosions echoing all around him.

RAY
I didn't know, I'm-

EDGAR
I'm living with the horrors I faced. Can't seem to shake 'em. The only way I'm going to lose those memories is by... experiencing them again. And I can't do that.

[Track 9 ends] He walks off. Clara runs back over.

CLARA
I think we're stopping. Are we getting close?

TANDEY
This looks like Harlem to me.

CLARA
Then let's get ready. Quickly, to the doors.

The group scurry to the back as the train slows, steam clouding the vision of the windows.

30 EXT. HARLEM STATION - EVENING
[Track 10: Regicide] More Union soldiers rush out to the platform, all ready to load more gear onto the train. The door swings open, and the group climbs out sneakily, hiding behind the vehicle and making their way towards the bushes. Suddenly, they hear an exclaim of voices, and they all turn back to see the soldiers in a scrap with muddy serfs, all wielding pickaxes. Bullets spray out across the station, the civilians getting mowed down.

CLARA
They're being slaughtered! Should we help?

TANDEY
If you don't remember, their lot tried to kill us earlier. And they started the fight.

CLARA
They're disgruntled, they're mad at the Union.

TANDEY
Who are fighting for us. This whole situation is insane, no-one's in the right here, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get involved.

CLARA
You're right. Sorry.

Clara sees Edgar, sweating and hyperventilating.

EDGAR
It's happening again, it's happening again, it's happening again!

CLARA
Edgar! You need to calm down, this is an anxiety attack. I'm part of the mental health team at my school, some of my students experience this. Look at me, and take a deep breath.

RAY
Could we not do this here?

CLARA
Can you move?

EDGAR
I can't… I can't!

A soldier locks eyes with the group, his face turning sour, and grasping another set of ammunition, feeding it into his rifle, believing them to be with the rebels.

RAY
Clara, we gotta move!

CLARA
You go, I'm not leaving him!

TANDEY
Come on, this way!

Tandey grabs Ray and pulls him through the bushes.

CLARA
Edgar, we've got incoming. You can do this.

EDGAR
No, no, no!

Edgar's eyes shift indecisively, before seeing the soldier aim his rifle at Clara.

EDGAR
NO!

Edgar throws himself in front of the impending bullet, and she screams as it rips through his shirt. Immediately, his face turns barren and his body goes limp. As the soldier reloads, Ray dives back out and drags Clara with him. [Track 10 ends]

CLARA
We can't leave him!

RAY
It's too late and you know it is! Don't be an idiot! I'm not letting anyone else die, okay?!

They continue to make their way through the shrubbery, all with a heavy weight upon their heart as the image of Edgar's body bleeding out in front of them.

31 EXT. HARLEM STREET - EVENING
Clara dawdles behind Ray and Tandey.

RAY
You saw him, he got shot through the heart. There was no way he could've survived that.

CLARA
I know.

RAY
Thing is, I know how he felt now. Seeing him dead on the floor… Must've been how he felt at Gettysburg. God, the terror.

TANDEY
So much potential. So young. All because of me. He wouldn't have been in this situation if I hadn't stopped you. You coulda been waiting at the safehouse.

CLARA
We'll get you all back safe.

RAY
Bit too late for that.

CLARA
Not for you. It's never too late.

TANDEY
We're nearly here, just down this road.

They head down an alleyway and come out to another road, where a little café sits in front of them.

TANDEY
That's the place.

CLARA
You really think she'll be here?

TANDEY
No. But I hope to god she is.

They look at each other, their eyes full of desperation, optimism, fear and hope, ruined by war, but excited for the embrace of love.

32 INT. CAFE - EVENING
Light streams through the boarded up windows. The tables and chairs are barricading the entrances, adding difficulty to the challenge of breaking in. With one hefty shove, the furniture collapses, and the three walk in to a dark atmosphere.

TANDEY
Hello? Anyone around?

CLARA
Looks like someone's been here.

An empty glass wobbles on the bar, catching their attention. They edge towards it and peer over. A set of twins look up, of different genders. The woman sparkles as she sees Tandey, jumping up.

MARYANN
Tandey?

TANDEY
Maryann!

MARYANN
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

She pulls him in and kisses him, hugging him. Clara and Ray turn around, giving the couple privacy.

TANDEY
I can't believe you're alive! I-

MARYANN
Neither could I, there was… I was so scared for you. You're here!

Tears stream down their faces.
The other twin scoffs, jumping over the bar and shaking his head.

KAREEM
Alright, alright, lovebirds, cool it. Don't need you two getting rowdy in here, we got enough of that in the streets.

Kareem and Tandey shake hands.

KAREEM
Glad you're here in one piece.

TANDEY
Same to you.

KAREEM
Who are your friends?

TANDEY
That's Ray, and that's Clara.

CLARA
Nice to meet you.

KAREEM
Best not sell us out, ya hear?

CLARA
Wouldn't dream of it. Maryann - that's your name, right? We went to your apartment, and it looked like something had happened there.

MARYANN
I don't want to relive it.

CLARA
My friend's still there, I need to know.

KAREEM
Apparently, a pile of goop turned into herself.

CLARA
Like a doppelganger?

[Track 11: And Now This…]

USANG
Not exactly…

They hear a gurgling, raspy voice, and turn around - the slime climbs over the furniture and towards them.

MARYANN
It's back! That's it!

KAREEM
Wait, you were serious? I thought you went loopy!

Maryann hits Kareem.

CLARA
Okay, moving slime… Everyone, get back. Who are you?

USANG
The name… is Usang Jurro.

The slime begins to coalesce, reforming into a humanoid shape.

MARYANN
That's exactly what it did last time!

He grows limbs, growing to be above them.

CLARA
That's not you…

Jurro begins to take on a different colour, being almost pale, and its hair greying, with vicious eyebrows.

CLARA
That's…

A dark black button shirt forms, underneath a navy blue coat.

CLARA
The Doctor!

USANG
I assimilated his DNA when he touched me. I can divide my form and spread across this world. I can look like anyone, provided I've got a sample of their physicality. It's the perfect crime. Steal someone's body, commit a murder, and disappear! And the best thing is… The Imperial Adjudicators have lost my scent. Just as I assimilated some of his DNA, he absorbed some of mine. He's been arrested on my charges!

The Doctor gargles, his mouth dripping with the slime, which he wipes away.

USANG
I'm free as a bird.

Clara reaches into her pocket, as she sees Kareem reach down behind the counter.

CLARA
The problem is, you're missing one thing.

USANG
What's that?

CLARA
Me.

Clara swiftly takes out her camera, taking a photo. The flash temporarily stuns Usang, giving Kareem enough time to take out a bat from under the counter and throw it over to Tandey, who whacks him. His torso disappears, reverting back to its liquid form. [Track 11 ends]

USANG
Oh…

It reverts back into slime.

TANDEY
That's for attacking my wife!

CLARA
Nice work… Why do you have a bat?

KAREEM
Hey, it's an unsafe street. Gotta protect my business.

[Track 12: The Magical Mysterio Tour 1:14 - 3:01]

USANG
Bad move…

The slime begins to grow, its liquidy form stretching out, unstable and erratically (like the Venom symbiote from Spider-Man 3).

MARYANN
Oh, my…

CLARA
Back! Through the back door, go, run, go!

It lets out a bubbly cackle. They all retreat towards the back door, but as they open it, they see more goo covering the other side of the door and they slam it, holding it shut.

MARYANN
We're trapped!

A slimy tendril reaches out towards the group, but Tandey whacks it again. Kareem dives under it and behind the counter, picking up glasses and throwing it at the creature. However the glass just passes through it and smashes into tiny shards on the other side.

RAY
What the heck do we do?!

CLARA
I don't know!

The slime wraps itself around Maryann's ankle and throws her to the floor, pulling her into the substance. She shrieks.

MARYANN
Help!

CLARA
Get her, quick!

Just as half of her is drowned in the sludge, Clara and Ray grab her arms, yanking at her, like a tug of war between Usang Jurro and the humans. Tandey continues to use the bat against the creature. The back door is broken down and the slime comes pouring through, growing and suffocating them.. Chairs and tables topple and crash. Soon, the entire room has been engulfed in the slime. Nevertheless, they continue to fight.

USANG
I shall consume you all, and use your bodies as I please! It's a kinda undignified end, but I think it's kinda funny!

As they try to climb through the liquid towards the entrance, Clara sees an object in the centre, almost like a heart. Her vision begins to blur, her head throbbing, but she looks over to Tandey, pointing at the heart. He nods, obviously beginning to lose consciousness too, but still heading towards the object. He raises the bat and hits it to the side, and the entire creature slams against the wall, and the humans fall to the ground, covered in the substance.

CLARA
Jurro controls his form by that thing in the centre, it must be his heart! If we can trap it-

TANDEY
We'd be cutting the slime off from the source!

RAY
Are you sure?!

CLARA
It's the only idea I've got!

The slime launches itself at Tandey, and he is flung back, getting choked as it reaches into his mouth. The bat rolls across the floor. Everyone runs towards him, trying to pull him away, but the slime continues to stretch as he's pulled further away. Clara notes a bell cloche with some cakes under it, picking it up and running towards the heart. Another slime tendril tries to attack Clara but she uses the cloche to knock it out of the way, reaching for the heart and encasing it. He gurgles, and all the slime drops to the floor, creating puddles. [Track 12 ends]
Clara presses down against the cloche. They all relax, panting. Maryann buries herself in her husband's arms.

CLARA
It's not moving. I think it's worked.

KAREEM
Can you… let go?

CLARA
I dunno. Worth a try.

TANDEY
No!

CLARA
I can't stay here indefinitely.

Clara stands up, and the group surround the creature. [Track 13: I Am A Ghost]

MARYANN
It's disgusting...

RAY
Is that it? What do we do with it now?

TANDEY
Do we kill it?

CLARA
No. He said he had spread out across the city. This would be like chopping an arm off a starfish. And the Doctor's still in trouble.

RAY
What about Meriday and Grafton?

CLARA
I dunno. Would they know to come here?

TANDEY
You know Meriday.

CLARA
Right, right.

KAREEM
I'm sorry, WHAT?!

They all stare at Kareem.

KAREEM
Are we not gonna talk about how bonkers this is?

TANDEY
With what's going on outside, nothing's surprising anymore.

KAREEM
Seriously, though!

CLARA
Okay, let me explain. This puddle is an alien.

KAREEM
Off to a great start!

CLARA
He was going to murder your sister, but she escaped. I think he's murdered before, because the police arrested my friend instead.

KAREEM
Great. Gotta love the cops.

CLARA
They're not your cops. Intergalactic cops. But where are they from? What planet?

USANG
Like I'd tell you.

CLARA
Ugh, I hate the uncooperative types.

She steps away and addresses the others, slightly panicked.

CLARA
You know what's worrying me?

MARYANN
It could break out of the jar and kill us all? We're talking about an alien psychopath right now!

CLARA
Well, possibly, but no.

TANDEY
There's more of him across the city?

CLARA
Right. They could be on their way.

TANDEY
So we trap them again.

CLARA
But they'll be expecting it. And they've got eyes on us.

She glances over at the jar with the bubbling slime.

CLARA
Kareem, you got a chopping board?

Kareem passes her a chopping board, and she wedges it under the jar, so she's able to transport the trapped creature.

CLARA
Thanks. I'll be taking it, if you don't mind.

She looks at them all.

CLARA
I'll be off. I have to find the Doctor. You've all been… amazing. Thanks for the help. Now you're together, maybe you can- I mean, once you've found the others, you could…

TANDEY
Head back to the safehouse. Good idea.

MARYANN
I don't think so.

TANDEY
Huh?

MARYANN
We'll be okay here. It's not safe by any means, but we've managed on our own so far. We can fight. You can go, but Kareem and I are going to stay.

KAREEM
Uh- are we?

MARYANN
Yes, don't be a wimp.

KAREEM
Oh. Okay, we're staying, apparently.

TANDEY
It's dangerous.

MARYANN
You ain't changing my mind.

They bicker, much to Clara's amusement. She wanders off, still holding the jar. [Track 13 ends]

FADE TO WHITE:

33 INT. COURTROOM - NIGHT
[Track 14: Defending The Earth] She unzips her bag, and takes out the jar with Usang Jurro inside, placing it on the table.

USANG
Ow!

CLARA
Part of Usang Jurro. It would be helpful if you could find the rest of your culprit. I'm not sure you can try half a murderer. Here's a few memoirs I took when I realised I had to save the Doctor yet again.

She takes out a few more items.

JUDGE
How did you know that this was the place?

CLARA
My- the Doctor's spaceship has telepathic circuits. I keyed them into Usang's history, and his home planet was Qutov. I went to that planet, and someone I believe to be your daughter - she says hi, by the way - redirected me to the courthouse on the asteroid named 36b Aybor. AKA here. Does that satisfy you?

She presents all her evidence - photos of the Doctor, the harbour, the warehouse, the apartment, and Usang Jurro in the Doctor's form, as well as the book, the hammer, some ammunition from the train station and finally Usang Jurro.

CLARA
Anything to say, Usang?

USANG
You disgust me.

CLARA
Likewise. I rest my case. Is that it, or do you need to, like, formally end it?

JUDGE
Uh, of course. Lord Doctor of Time, I declare you not guilty.

She bangs her gavel.

JUDGE
Thank you for the evidence provided, Miss Oswald. We shall take your evidence to prove that Usang Jurro is the culprit.

CLARA
Go ahead.

She crouches down and stares at Usang.

CLARA
Nice try. But you messed with the wrong people. They're resilient. They go through a lot, they've fought and died for their future, and they win. And you lost, and now you're going to spend a very long time locked away. See ya!

The Imperial Adjudicators step forward, collecting the evidence and carrying it out. The slime begins to reform a tiny bit, scowling a little bit at her. [Track 14 ends]

34 INT. HALLWAY - NIGHT
[Track 15: The Last Thing We Need] The Doctor and Clara sit on a bench outside the courtroom.

DOCTOR
So- so, so… how was your day?

Clara sighs.

CLARA
Seriously?

DOCTOR
What?

CLARA
All that, and not even a simple thank you? Maybe I'll go talk to that judge, put you back in that prison cell until you learn your manners.

He grumbles.

DOCTOR
...Thank you.

CLARA
What was that?

DOCTOR
You heard it, thank you. Enjoy the moment, those don't come around often.

CLARA
They really don't!

She giggles.

DOCTOR
Come on. Back to the TARDIS. Weren't we talking about a holiday?

CLARA
Can we make one stop first?

The Doctor tilts his head, frowning.

35 INT. CLARA'S CLASSROOM - DAY
Clara stands in front of her class, looking warmly to them all.

CLARA
"The probability that we may fall in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just; it shall not deter me."

JEREMY
Eh? Miss, that doesn't even make sense.

CLARA
It's a quote, from Abraham Lincoln. The 16th President of the United States of America. He abolished slavery, modernised the economy, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't liable to mistake.

JEREMY
Miss. If I wanted a history lesson, I'd go down to Mr Jeffries' classroom.

CLARA
He fought for slavery, but during that fight, he created opponents. For his actions, sometimes rebellions were grown. People lost their lives.

JONATHAN
You're talking about the Draft Riots, right?

CLARA
Yes. The working class were forced into the army. But of course, many were frightened by the war, and they tried to fight against it in New York. But the Draft didn't include African Americans, and some of the Irish working class turned on them, and it soon turned into a race riot. But throughout all of that, you can see integrity. They fought for their honour. Lincoln continued to fight racism for another two years, those working class continued to fight for their freedom and many African Americans unfortunately had to fight for their survival. But they all had integrity.

JONATHAN
I read about a black family who stayed in New York as a statement, that others shouldn't be scared about standing up for themselves, and they were joined by an old Welshman and a young girl, and it was a monument for interracial peace in a time of racial rebellion.

CLARA
It was a Scotsman.

JONATHAN
Oh, sorry. I didn't realise you were there(!)

Clara smiles to herself and turns around.

CLARA (quietly)
Funny you should say that, actually…

FADE TO:

36 INT. CAFE - DAY
ONE WEEK LATER…
Business is slowly returning to normal in the cafe, with Tandey, Maryann and Kareem working behind the bar, serving customers. The Doctor and Clara stride in.

TANDEY
Hey, strangers! Glad to see a friendly face.

CLARA
Same to you.

KAREEM
Rescued your friend then?

CLARA
Yes, thanks - we just wanted to check in on you. Everyone else okay?

Tandey nods towards a table, and they see the rest of the group - Meriday stuffing his face, whilst Grafton is slightly repulsed and Ray is drinking a glass of water. He looks over to the Doctor and Clara, waving.

TANDEY
Same as usual, then.

KAREEM
Will you be staying for something to eat?

CLARA
Can't, sorry. The Doctor's taking me to Tibet. Knowing him, he's going to get it wrong somehow, though.

TANDEY
Enjoy your travels.

CLARA
Thank you very much.

DOCTOR
Nice to have met you.

They turn around and walk out.

TANDEY
Hey, uh, hey, Clara?

She looks back.

TANDEY
We gonna see ya again?

CLARA
Maybe.

TANDEY
You know, we won't forget him.

CLARA
Neither will I. He saved me. Even when he was scared, he showed bravery.

TANDEY
Yeah... That was always him. And it always will be.

She smiles, and they walk out. [Track 15 ends]
