1 EXT. SPACE
[Track 1: Browsing] Stars. Endless, forever, and sparkling. We pan round from this sight to Mars – the Red Planet.
DOCTOR (oc)
We are made of decisions.
Beat.
DOCTOR
The decisions we make define us. What we are and what we will be. Whether we are helpful or hurtful. Together or alone. Broken or whole. Alive or dead. Good… or bad. To decide is to set course for the future. In the end, not all decisions lead to good things. But they're decisions we still have to make.
2 INT. TARDIS
The Doctor, standing on the upper-level of the console room, having underlined the word 'Decision' on his chalkboard. Clara stands on the main level of the room, right next to the console, with a distinct confused look etched into her face. The Doctor smiles, walking down the steps to the same level as Clara, stuffing his hands into his trouser pockets revealing his dark purple shirt behind his long black coat.
DOCTOR
So, now that I've answered your question, where to? I know a lovely place called Urgolis-
CLARA
No, that didn't answer my question. At all. In fact, you seemed to avoid it altogether.
DOCTOR
Didn't you hear me properly? I told you to get your ears checked out last time we-
CLARA
Doctor.
DOCTOR
Okay, alright, maybe I avoided your question with an excellent philosophical answer.
CLARA
I don't want a philosophical answer, I want a straightforward answer! A normal answer with no vague references to my original question!
The Doctor sighs.
DOCTOR
No.
CLARA
No?
DOCTOR
No, Danny Pink cannot travel in my TARDIS again. Anywhere. At all. Ever.
CLARA
Really?
DOCTOR
Really.
CLARA
You owe me.
DOCTOR
Since when?
CLARA
Since all the times I've saved your life! And you owe Danny too – he saved your- our lives back with the Skovox Blitzer, and you remember everything that happened in the Escape Room.
DOCTOR
I'd hardly call it saving my life. And he wouldn't stop speaking the entire time. Chatter, chatter, chatter. Does he never shut up?
CLARA
I don't want to argue about this.
DOCTOR
Great! Then we can move on. Urgolis Ninety it is-
The Doctor slides the handbrake round and goes to pull the throttle, but Clara shifts the handbrake back to its original place – stopping the TARDIS from dematerialising.
CLARA
Just because he made a decision to fight with guns doesn't mean he's a bad person.
DOCTOR
Decisions define us all. The moment he decided to kill, to pick up a gun, to be a soldier, no matter the cause, was the moment he was defined forever.
CLARA
What about you? What about the Time War? What about your decision to destroy the Contract?
DOCTOR
I've made amends. And I continue to make up for my mistakes as best I can. All he did was become a PE teacher.
CLARA
Yeah, but did those decisions – and every other aggressive decision you've ever made - define you as a soldier? Did they, Doctor?
The Doctor frowns at Clara. There's a moment of consideration.
DOCTOR
One more trip. ONE.
Clara smiles a huge smile and immediately hugs the Doctor, who looks incredibly uncomfortable as she does so.
CLARA
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The hug is broken as Clara steps away, that big smile still present.
CLARA
Thank you. I'll go get him.
She heads for the doors.
DOCTOR
Take your time, no rush. Really.
She stops abruptly, turning to the Doctor, smile gone.
CLARA
I know what you're like. If this box has moved even the tiniest bit by the time I get back, you'll be changing face again.
DOCTOR
I'll be right here.
The school teacher looks at the Time Lord, sceptical, before exiting the TARDIS. Once she's gone, he operates a set of controls. The monitor flickers to life and a message instantly plays.
ICE WARRIOR (oc)
Urgent- this is urgent. Mars- Mars is under attack. I have… failed my mission… I have failed-
Static. The Doctor raises an eyebrow and goes to pull the throttle down, engaging flight – but he doesn't. He stops himself before doing so, and he thinks for a moment, taking a small step back from the console. He then grins.
DOCTOR
Decisions, decisions.
3 EXT. MARS SURFACE - NIGHT
A barren dune of sand and dust. In the distance, we see a green figure trekking up a small hill. After a moment or two, the figure becomes more visible. We recognise this creature as an Ice Warrior – a hulking green scaly figure with a bullet shaped metallic helmet and two red blast-screens covering the eyes. It seems to be stumbling, and is rasping quite heavily. Suddenly, it falls to its knees. With its clamp-like hand, it brings some sort of device up to its mouth.
ICE WARRIOR
I have… failed...
The Ice Warrior lets out one final gasp before collapsing face first into the terrain. After a moment, its armour, its very being, begins to melt… [Track 1 ends]
ROLL TITLES
4 INT. TARDIS - NIGHT
Clara enters, followed shortly behind by Danny Pink, only to see the Doctor walking down the steps with the bright orange space suits bundled up in his arms, and a grin on his face.
CLARA
What… are you doing?
DOCTOR
Well, you wanted PE here to have another trip in the TARDIS. I thought we might as well do something different this time.
[Track 2: The Artefact] He puts the suits on the console and throws the throttle forward. The ship bursts to life, the central time rotor shifting up and down whilst the upper-rotor spins around fast. It's wilder than usual for this iteration of the Time Lord, bumpier.
CLARA
Doctor!
Suddenly, everything comes to a stop. The TARDIS has landed. Clara and Danny recover quickly.
DANNY
Are you out of your mind?!
DOCTOR
Good question. Come on, then-
The Time Lord chucks a space suit at Danny, then one at Clara.
DOCTOR
Get dressed; we haven't got all day!
5 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, OPERATIONS ROOM - DAY
We pan round an eerily dark room - the size of which is hard to make out at the minute. Despite the poor lighting, it is somewhat lit by the large screen we soon come to rest on. Said screen is split up into a number of different sections, all sections showcasing different imagery of the Mars surface. A lengthy console resides just beneath the screen, like a keyboard beneath a monitor. An Ice Warrior is at this main console, operating some slider controls.
VELK
Report 11-11-67. Hibernation units are failing across all of Mars. The plague's effects have spread quicker than expected.
As with all Ice Warriors, as this one speaks, he speaks in a low raspy voice, certain words followed shortly by a hiss.
SKEENO (oc)
And the vessel?
A similar if not somewhat different voice comes from the panel.
VELK
Scans are still in process.
SKEENO (oc)
Keep all sensors on high alert. Even the slightest change, above or below ground, I am to be informed immediately.
VELK
Of course, commander. And what of the ones who refuse to listen to the instructions of the Federation?
SKEENO (oc)
That concern is not one of yours, Velk. Return to your duties.
VELK
Yes, commander.
6 INT. TARDIS
An image of the Mars surface, right outside the ship, sits on one of the two monitors attached to the console.
DOCTOR (oc)
And does that look dangerous to you? No. It looks wonderfully dull. Big Brother hasn't even made its mark on the planet yet! Isn't that exciting?
CLARA (oc)
Judging books by their covers is a common saying on Earth, you know.
We pan round to the Doctor and Clara - both in space suits now - looking at the monitor, Danny standing in the background - also wearing a space suit - staring at the two.
DOCTOR
Really? I thought the Reneks invented that saying. Orange skin, no fingers. Never play a game of thumb wars with them, trust me. Okay, then, Miss Oswald, you wanted one more trip for your boyfriend here, so I'm giving you that one trip - and what better place than Mars? Nothing ever happens on Mars! Besides the few times something has happened there, but most of the time nothing ever happens there.
A big smile from the Time Lord – an eerie smile that sends a chill down the spine. He quickly walks over to the doors.
DANNY
Colour scheme's a bit much, isn't it?
Danny gestures to the suit. The Doctor looks at Danny as if he's stupid.
DOCTOR
Would you rather swan on in there and die?
Clara frowns as the Doctor exits the TARDIS.
DANNY
I told you.
CLARA
Hey, I'm not giving up hope just yet. You two have got to have something in common.
DANNY
I know you're trying. And I appreciate that. But, this… This isn't me. This is the opposite of me. He is the opposite of me.
Clara sighs.
CLARA
Let's just go explore Mars…
Danny edges towards the doors, terrified.
7 EXT. MARS SURFACE
Clara and Danny exit the police box only to see the Doctor looking about curiously.
CLARA
What's wrong now?
DOCTOR
Nothing. Just…
He frowns.
DOCTOR
Do you remember the Ice Warriors?
CLARA
How could I forget?
She looks at Danny.
CLARA
Scaly blokes.
DOCTOR
More accurately: Martians. An honour-based race, the Ice Warriors are as far from evil as it gets. Normally they get along perfectly fine with everyone else. Except for the times when they don't. Many a war has started because of the honour they hold so dear and so close. I assumed we would have landed in their rebuilding period. The source indicated as much... I expected to see structures. Many structures, in fact. Not deserted and empty land.
CLARA
Source? What source?
The Doctor kneels down, checking the ground and opting to ignore Clara's question.
CLARA
No. No, you don't get to do this today. Is something wrong here? Did you bring us here deliberately?
No reply.
DANNY
Clara-
CLARA
I want him to answer me. Doctor. Doctor! I said answer me!-
DOCTOR
I think I've made a very big mistake.
[Track 2 ends] Clara is briefly taken aback. She looks at Danny, who appears just as surprised.
DANNY
What?
The Doctor stands up, looking about, seemingly on edge.
DOCTOR
The ground. Look at the ground beneath me.
The two do so, seeing a dried-up puddle of the colour green.
CLARA
…And that is what exactly?
[Track 3: They're In The Walls]
DOCTOR
Ice Warrior. Melted down and dried up Ice Warrior.
Suddenly, the Doctor and Clara are surrounded in a faint white glow.
CLARA
What-
The Doctor and Clara both disappear, leaving Danny alone now.
DANNY
Clara?! Clara!
He looks around frantically. And then he's surrounded too - by Ice Warriors.
8 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
The Doctor and Clara appear on a metal dais.
CLARA
Danny!
DOCTOR
Ah...
CLARA
Doctor, we need to get back to-
DOCTOR
Not the time, Clara.
He nods his head forward, gesturing in front of them. Clara looks, seeing three Ice Warriors ahead of them with their wrist-weapons out and aiming. [Track 3 ends]
9 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
[Track 4: We're Still Going To Kill You] The Doctor and Clara are shoved in, seeing immediately an Ice Warrior that looks similar to that of an Ice Lord: Skeeno - a crack running across his helmet, partially reaching the left blast-screen that covers the left eye. He hisses briefly.
SKEENO
You have been sent by the Federation?
CLARA
We have?
DOCTOR
Yes-yes-yes, of course we have, Clara! Please, excuse my companion… commander?
Skeeno nods.
DOCTOR
Yes, yes, excuse her. She's got the mind of an old woman and the eyes of a tarsier. Doesn't know up from down, really.
CLARA
What?-
DOCTOR
Now, if you wouldn't mind telling us exactly why we were sent here?
SKEENO
You do not know?
DOCTOR
Uh, well- The Federation has very strict rules when it comes to… tender matters. Security mostly.
Skeeno looks unsure at the Doctor and his unnerving smile for a moment. He eventually moves over to a nearby panel and pushes a button. A holographic image pops out, flickering between being your typical blue static colour to normally coloured every few seconds, showing the Doctor and Clara a silver cloud.
DOCTOR
Fascinating…
CLARA
What's that? Gas?
DOCTOR
No, no. That is a plague. Raw, unfiltered, very much visible.
Clara takes a step forward, looking into it closer.
CLARA
How can you tell?
DOCTOR
Skills.
CLARA
What kind of skills?
DOCTOR
Being vastly intelligent – now, shut up. I assume this plague is a problem of yours?
SKEENO
It is far more than just a problem. It has the potential to destroy the entire Ice Warrior race if not contained.
DOCTOR
Then we stop it. I'm sure I could conjure up a vaccine given a little bit of time and some more information. When did it first appear? And how does it kill?
SKEENO
The first cases originated on one of our retrieval ships, returning the Ice Warriors home after our long sleep. Because of this, it is likely to assume that Mars is not the only planet affected, hence our contact with the Federation. It has forced us underground and has killed hundreds of our people.
Skeeno turns the hologram off.
SKEENO
As for your second question: there is little known. Our scientists have predicted that it elevates the temperature of the internal bodily systems and boils the skin.
DOCTOR
Predicted?
SKEENO
We cannot study it ourselves without contracting the plague. It takes only twelve hours to kill.
The Doctor digests the information for a few seconds.
CLARA
Danny...
DOCTOR
What? Who?
CLARA
Danny is still out there!
SKEENO
Dan-ee?
DOCTOR
An associate. Not very smart. PE. Terrible at maths.
Clara drags the Doctor to one side.
CLARA
We need to get him back. If that plague is at its peak up there, then he's in danger.
DOCTOR
He's a soldier. He can handle himself.
The Doctor goes to move away but Clara pulls him back.
CLARA
He's a human being!
DOCTOR
He'll be fine.
He attempts to go again, but, again, she pulls him back.
CLARA
Why do you hate him so much?
The Doctor looks for a moment, almost staring through Clara as he falls into something of a trance.
CLARA
I need to find him.
DOCTOR
…Yes, fine, yes.
He turns to Skeeno.
DOCTOR
Like I said, an associate of ours is still above. Why was he left behind?
SKEENO
The transmat can only carry two at a time, and our detectors registered you two as the… necessary beings.
DOCTOR
At least it's a simple answer. Can we get him back?
SKEENO
The female can go with two of my Warriors to collect him if that is what you wish. But if he cannot be found, if he has gone to the Forbidden Zone, then he is lost for good.
CLARA
Forbidden Zone?
DOCTOR
Oh.
The Doctor rubs his face, thinking.
CLARA
"Oh"? What do you mean "oh"? Doctor?!
DOCTOR
She's not- she doesn't- Can you explain for me? I need to think. Talking takes up space.
Clara turns her attention to Skeeno.
SKEENO
Some Warriors are… afraid. They fear the changes occurring to our way of life. We are moving forward; they wish to stay behind.
DOCTOR
The Galactic Federation. Big bunch. Lots of planets. Political entity, blah blah blah. Not a bad cause... not a great one either. A lot happens because of the Federation. Plenty of beings across the universe refuse to join in with the rest because they prefer their old ways, change being an abnormal thing for most of them.
CLARA
Great. Just great. A plague that burns you from the inside and a group of rogue Ice Warriors. Look who's talking now Mr. "Mars isn't dangerous"!
DOCTOR
I resent that statement. I resent it to death. I said nothing ever happens on Mars most of the time. Emphasis on the most part. We just happen to be sitting in one of the bad statistics, in which something does happen.
Clara rolls her eyes.
CLARA
Can I go save my boyfriend now?
The door out of the room slides open and Velk, with another Warrior behind him, enters.
VELK
You called for me, commander?
10 INT. REBEL BASE, HOLDING CELL - DAY
Danny is lying on a small platform attached to the wall - said platform, judging from the design, is supposed to be something of a bed. The math teacher doesn't seem all that bothered by his current position, nor the alien setting around him. He's stoic, in fact. Thinking. Waiting. Suddenly, the door into the room slides open, and Danny stands to attention as an Ice Warrior enters. His armour is battered, dirty in some places, with a crack across the chest. It observes Danny for a moment.
VAARD
Who are you?
DANNY
Danny Pink. From Earth.
VAARD
I see… I expected as much.
DANNY
You did?
VAARD
The Earth Alliance has always been a key player in matters such as these. They stand for nothing. Rogue elements are to be muted. The Galactic Federation is security. The Galactic Federation is peace. But some do not wish to be muzzled like the others. We wish for total freedom as things once were.
DANNY
...So the rest of your race is with this Galactic Federation, but you're against it?
VAARD
You sound uncertain.
DANNY
I am. I'm not with any Federation or Alliance.
VAARD
You are like us?
DANNY
I, uh… suppose so?
Vaard seems sceptical, a hiss lingering in the air for a moment before the silence is broken by-
VAARD
Then you will be able to help us in our work, I'm sure. We need as much assistance as possible. Follow me, Dan-ee.
The Ice Warrior turns and exits the room, Danny following somewhat hesitantly. [Track 4 ends]
11 EXT. MARS SURFACE - DAY
Clara and Velk, with an Ice Warrior following shortly behind, trek side by side across the land.
CLARA
The TARDIS isn't too far away now. I think.
She looks at the Warrior by her side. [Track 5: Reflections]
CLARA
So… what's your name?
VELK
I am Velk.
CLARA
Oh. And, um, how do you spell that?
No response – an awkward situation so far. But Clara looks curious more than anything else.
CLARA
What's it like? Being an Ice Warrior, I mean. I can't imagine it really. Do you eat? Do you… do you feel emotion? Like sadness?
Beat.
VELK
Why do you ask these questions?
CLARA
Because I… I'd like to get to know you and your people better. Last time I met one of your lot, it didn't exactly go swimmingly.
Another beat.
VELK
Opinions are usually kept muted. We are intelligent beings, but our lifestyle has always remained the same – not even the Federation can change all things. But sometimes I see much more than all of this. This world, it is bland. Colourless, in a way. It is our home, but that does not mean I enjoy it.
Clara's attention shifts forward.
CLARA
I know how that feels.
VELK
During hibernation deep underground, I... dreamt. I dreamt of beauty. Of land made of many colours. Of smoke rising from burnt and dead terrain to create life in the air, taking shape for the rest of eternity in clouds. Of the stars and how it could've been to fly with my brothers away from everything I've known. Of... love. I dreamt of many things.
Clara looks to him again, Velk's attention having drifted downwards now - seemingly ashamed at his admission.
CLARA
It's good to dream.
Velk looks up.
VELK
It is.
Clara smiles, but the moment is ultimately cut short as the trio reach the TARDIS.
CLARA
Danny?!
She heads over to the ship and tries the door.
CLARA
Locked. He can't be inside then.
Clara looks around and starts calling out as Velk walks up to the police box. [Track 5 ends]
CLARA
Danny! Danny, are you here?!
[Track 6: Spiked Bat]
VELK
This is your ship?
CLARA
Yeah, it's roomier than it looks. Danny! Danny!
VELK
But it is only a box.
The unnamed Ice Warrior at the back begins to operate a metal device clamped tightly in its right hand.
ICE WARRIOR
Energy has been detected.
CLARA
Same energy that's on me and the Doctor, yeah? And on the box?
ICE WARRIOR
Yes. The movement patterns indicate your associate has gone…
The Ice Warrior moves ahead.
ICE WARRIOR
…This way.
Clara rushes off.
CUT TO:
They come to a stop on a hill overlooking a large patch of land, and Clara looks on in awe. We pan round to see the sight: a huge jumble of metallic domes, all varying in size, all connected by corridors, all sit some distance away.
VELK
The Forbidden Zone.
CLARA
That's where Danny is?
The Ice Warrior wielding the device nods. Clara takes a moment, then sighs.
CLARA
Guess that's where we're going then.
VELK
There can be no rescue.
CLARA
Why not?
VELK
The traitors. They are few in numbers, but they possess a great weapon. Any attempt to destroy them would be met with nothing less than catastrophe.
CLARA
So? We get in there, we get out. Nobody has to know.
VELK
It would be suicide.
CLARA
I'm not letting him die in there.
VELK
He is not of importance.
CLARA
He is to me!
Velk hisses in response to that antagonistic snap.
CLARA
I- I'm sorry. Just... please. You told me you dreamt of love, yeah? Well, to love is to be compassionate. Saving his life, going in there to risk our lives, that's compassionate. I love him. Please.
Velk stares at Clara for a moment, eventually turning to the Ice Warrior that accompanied them here.
VELK
You may go back to base and update Commander Skeeno. I shall go with the human.
ICE WARRIOR
I-
VELK
It is an order, not a request.
The unnamed Ice Warrior, hesitant again, but gives in and nods slightly, agreeing to Velk's command, then going off on his own.
CLARA
Thank you.
VELK
We should be careful venturing into the territory of the traitors.
CLARA
Yeah…
She looks to the structure in the distance.
CLARA
We should.
Her eyes narrow, her mission fixed firmly in her mind. [Track 6 ends]
12 INT. ABANDONED RETRIEVAL SHIP - DAY
[Track 7: That Is The Moon] The Doctor is examining the dimly lit room - a torch in one hand and his sonic in the other. Suddenly, Skeeno emerges via the open entrance.
DOCTOR
Just an ordinary, boring old spacecraft. Not a trace of the plague anywhere...
The Doctor seems disappointed.
SKEENO
This is a good thing perhaps? If it were here still, we would both be dead.
DOCTOR
I'm talking about the lingering elements. Not enough to kill, but enough to examine. That's all we need.
SKEENO
Can no conclusion be made from what is already known?
DOCTOR
I have a theory more than a conclusion. From the lack of anything in here, and the information you provided… This plague may be a lot more alive than initially thought.
The Time Lord rubs his face.
DOCTOR
Whatever it is, it's not quite as simple as a mindless disease attacking vital organs and skin cells. It's more than that.
SKEENO
My primary concern is with the remedy to this issue, not the problem causing it. Can a cure be synthesised imminently?
The Doctor mulls it over for a few seconds.
DOCTOR
I don't think so. Not yet at least. I need more - not just an image of what the disease looks like and some basic information alongside it. I need the real deal. How about samples from the puddles? No- Wait. You tried to test them already, and the results were negative - correct?
Skeeno nods his head slightly, confirming it.
DOCTOR
Must've burnt the remnants of itself in the puddles. Just like in here. So, to get a cure, we need an actual piece of this plague pie. Know any good spots to find it?
The Ice Warrior commander stares – hesitant to say anything.
DOCTOR
I know it's dangerous. But more will burn if something isn't done.
SKEENO
...The rogue element. We believe they've contained some of the disease at their base.
DOCTOR
Do you have a data disk anywhere? Going to need what little progress I've made on-hand. Just in case.
SKEENO
It is unwise to travel there, Doctor. Death is a certainty if you do.
DOCTOR
I know. But I will anyway. Seems Clara had the right idea after all. Now, chop chop: data disk and exact coordinates for this so-called 'Forbidden Zone'.
A look from the Doctor deters Skeeno from going any further. The commander simply lowers his head, recognising the Time Lord's act, and exits. [Track 7 ends]
13 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
[Track 8: Spotting Movement] Danny and Vaard walk down one of the many long stretches of hallway connecting the numerous domes together. The design is simplistic, minimal. Just metal, some thick wiring running across the walls. The human of the duo lingers somewhat behind the Ice Warrior, looking around for possible exits as he moves – but the place is practically air-tight.
DANNY
What do you want me to help you with, exactly?
VAARD
Experimentation.
DANNY
...The cut me open sort, or?
VAARD
Not quite as animalistic as that. You are a free spirit, as are we. We have no desire to kill you, as long as you have no desire to kill us. We simply require assistance with a certain task.
DANNY
What kind of task?
VAARD
You will see.
They reach another dome/section of the base closed off by a hangar-like door, and step in as the automated entrance slides apart.
14 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
A cluttered room with control panels and advanced computers on one side, some rebel Ice Warriors tending to matters there, and, on the other side, an entire glass wall – tinted white – with a bulkhead door off to the side of said wall, presumably leading into the quarantined area. Behind the glass is a lone candle sat on a just as lone table; a small flame sat atop the wax. Danny takes in his new surroundings quickly.
DANNY
Cosy.
VAARD
Co-see?
DANNY
I, uh, I like the room, is what I mean.
Vaard brings his head up slightly, signifying understanding in some regard. The sinister Warrior proceeds to move over to a nearby control panel, whilst Danny looks in at the small flame contained behind the glass wall.
DANNY
Why have you locked up a candle?
VAARD
The destiny of the Ice Warrior race has come to a falter. That candle is no more than a candle, but the flame atop it is a deadly plague that will destroy all of us if we do not succeed in dominating it.
DANNY
Oh.
Danny gulps, taking a step back from the see-through wall.
DANNY
You said dominate... If it's so dangerous, wouldn't you mean to get rid of it, or- or something like that?
VAARD
All things behind that glass unit are contaminated. It killed five of our soldiers to contain it in the first place. It is the perfect weapon – against all life.
DANNY
…All life?
VAARD
All life. And you, Dan-ee, will be the first to test it.
Danny – eyes wide now with fear and uncertainty. [Track 8 ends]
15 EXT. THE FORBIDDEN ZONE - DAY
[Track 9: Feel Safe] Clara stands by one of the many corridors that connects the domes together, the structures now considerably bigger up close and personal.
CLARA
I'm not exactly seeing a door here.
VELK
Passing through the main entrance would result in failure, I have no doubt in that. This area is much more suitable for our intentions.
The Ice Warrior promptly gets into position, and, out of his wrist weapon, a beam fires – a steady beam, not a charged one intent to kill. It begins to cut through the metal plates of the corridor.
CLARA
Fancy. And sneaky. You could've been a burglar in another life.
No response.
CLARA
Are you sure they won't have security measures lined up and ready to kill us? Big guns and all that?
VELK
They are a strong and clever unit, but they are arrogant. The traitors believe no Warrior would step foot on the land around here without intent to join.
CLARA
Those guys have egos then. Great. Got to love an alien soldier with a big head.
She realises.
CLARA
But that's speculation on your behalf, yeah? Because your bunch, they would've already sprung a trap if they could get in and out without being noticed.
VELK
That is… correct.
CLARA
Brilliant - a plan based on a guess. Dealt with that concept far too much in my life.
Clara's tension looks to disappear as she crosses her arms, curiosity befalling her instead.
CLARA
You mentioned dreaming before?
Velk doesn't reply, but she continues nonetheless.
CLARA
Any specific favourites? Besides the wonderful sights and the wonderful colours and the wonderful clouds, I mean.
VELK
Do you mock me?
CLARA
No! No way. I didn't mean it like that- I was just- I was curious, that's all. Just a curious, stupid human.
Velk falls silent again, but only briefly.
VELK
I understand your meaning. Our civilization is no perfect thing. My dreams, they are perfect. In ways that are plentiful and joyous and sad. The lives I've lived in hibernation - lives that never will exist. I find that to be beautiful.
CLARA
That'd be described as bittersweet in Earthling terms.
VELK
Bittersweet.
The moment comes to a stop as the corridor plating falls in, a circular shape cut into the metal by Velk's tool.
CLARA
DIY entrance. Should've recorded that and put it up on Youtube. It's no slime, but still…
Velk doesn't react. Clara lets out a sigh in response.
CLARA
Waste of a good joke, that. Alright let's go-
He stops her by putting his clamp-like hand in her path.
VELK
You must remain silent now. If the traitors find you, they shall not be so welcoming.
CLARA
Which is why we need to find Danny as soon as possible.
VELK
Stealth is essential above all else.
CLARA
I get you. Thanks. For watching my back, I mean.
He nods slightly before entering, and Clara follows. [Track 9 ends]
16 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
[Track 10: Awakening the Ice Queen] Danny presses himself against the wall.
DANNY
I thought we were allies!
VAARD
We are. Our goals are the same: freedom. Freedom from the restraints set by others. But we require your help to achieve that freedom. And you can help in that.
DANNY
It'll kill me!
VAARD
Potentially – but nothing is without risk.
Danny steps around Vaard, but stops as if hitting a brick wall; in front of him, another Ice Warrior.
VAARD
Your death can be painless or painful, Dan-ee. We will make sure the latter is achieved with great success if you so desire?
The former soldier turned maths teacher looks at the glass room.
DANNY
…Alright.
VAARD
I am glad of your agreement.
DANNY
Yeah, well, I'm not.
Vaard hisses, gesturing towards the metallic door off to the side of the glass wall. Pressure releases from the frame of said door, indicating it's ready. Danny walks over to it, eyeing the exit as he does – but an Ice Warrior steps into view, ruining any chance of escape. His attention draws back to the door and he tugs it open, entering quickly as one of the Warriors shoves him.
17 INT. REBEL BASE, CONTAINMENT ROOM - DAY
The door closes, locking instantly. Danny edges forward – eyes on the lit candle, the flame atop it starting to move wildly now.
18 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
Clara and Velk make their way down the half-cylindrical hallway, the floor a straight smooth metal – wary of any potential aggressors as they go.
CLARA
I hope this scanner of yours is up to scratch.
VELK
Our equipment is not the most advanced technology available, but it is functional enough.
CLARA
I'm not certain if that makes me hopeful or the exact opposite.
[Track 10 ends] In that very moment, the white lighting of the base is replaced by a sinister dark red – an alarm starting to sound alongside the colour shift. [Track 11: An Abandoned Base]
CLARA
Pointing out the obvious as I do, that doesn't seem good.
VELK
We must retreat-
CLARA
No! Danny's still here, we can't just leave him because someone turned on the Devil's disco!
VELK
The traitors possess much stronger weapons than we do-
CLARA
So I keep hearing! But what weaponry, exactly? You're not telling me something, are you?
Velk looks down – uncertain.
VELK
We learnt not too long ago that the traitors have the plague contained, and are planning to weaponize it.
CLARA
What?!
VELK
If it has escaped, then we are in even further danger than before-
CLARA
...Okay, okay. Alright. Sure! Sure. Deadly plague on the loose, potentially right around the corner ready to infect and kill us straight off the bat. We can deal with that when- If it comes to it. For now, we focus on Danny.
The sweat on Clara's face can be seen a lot clearer under this more gruesome lighting. Her expression switches quickly from fear to confusion, spotting the hesitation in the Warrior's stiff movement.
CLARA
What is it? …Are you afraid?
Velk hisses angrily.
CLARA
It's okay-
VELK
I am not afraid.
CLARA
Yeah. Good. Because I bloody well am!
A nervous, albeit brief, chuckle from the human. Then, silence for a second or two.
CLARA
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you. But I won't- No, I can't leave this place without Danny.
Velk lets out a raspy noise - a noise that could easily be mistaken for a sigh.
VELK
Very well. We move forwards.
The Ice Warrior lumbers on whilst Clara lingers, a scared look on her face briefly... She quickly snaps out of it and follows, the red lighting and alarm ever prominent. [Track 11 ends]
19 INT. REBEL BASE, CONTAINMENT ROOM - DAY
Ringing - all around him. Danny Pink, reeling from a momentary unconscious state, gets to his feet with some struggle, eyes darting around. The man looks dizzy, the newly formed red lighting sending his head spinning even more, and us with him.
DANNY
Hello?
His voice echoes, ricocheting off the walls and bouncing back at him. And it persists for a moment, the school teacher grabbing at his head, disorientated and afraid-
Then, everything snaps back into place. And the ringing ceases. And the dizziness fades. And, instead, that blaring alarm replaces it all. Danny catches his breath in recovery, taking in his changed surroundings...
[Track 12: Escape] The glass that once sealed the containment room off is shattered, left as shards scattered across the metal floor. The candle on that little table is nothing now, the seemingly alien wax melted away into a puddle. The fire that once burned over it is gone too. As for the Ice Warriors in the Testing Station – they've been replaced by green splotches.
20 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
Danny steps out, the glass crunching beneath his shoes. He inspects one of the green puddles closer, confused and curious.
VAARD
Dan-ee-
That familiar raspy voice, even raspier now - and odd too. Something is very wrong. The ex-soldier looks about, swiftly spotting a clamp-like hand, presumably belonging to Vaard, stretching out from behind a nearby control panel, grabbing onto said panel and bringing the rest of the body up promptly—
VAARD
Help… me.
Vaard's armour, almost exactly as it was, but terribly scorched now. Within the armour, where Martian flesh once was, fire now resides – raw, burning hot to the touch, and alive. Fire, in humanoid shape, or Ice Warrior-shape, pouring out somewhat through the mouth hole in the helmet.
VAARD
Dan-ee. Help. Me.
The fire inside shifts wildly, angrily. Danny responds by quickly fleeing towards the exit, but it doesn't open automatically as it did before.
DANNY
Let me out! Somebody!
VAARD
There can be no escape.
Danny turns – this new hybrid of Ice Warrior and flames only a few feet away from him, the green scaly armour appearing almost black like charcoal thanks to the scorch marks.
21 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
Clara and Velk come to that large, hangar-like door, and immediately hear the banging coming from the other side of it, along with the muffled sounds of someone yelling out.
CLARA
Danny…?
Her eyes widen – realisation hits. He's calling out for help.
CLARA
No, no-
Clara looks at Velk.
CLARA
Get it open!
Velk hesitates but quickly shifts forward, the beam from earlier firing out of his wrist-device and colliding with the metal.
CLARA
It's taking too long!
She looks around frantically for a control panel or computer of some sort – but nothing. Not a thing. With that, she begins to bang on the metal door desperately.
CLARA
Danny!?
22 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
Danny, banging on the door as well. We pan away from him slightly, seeing the approaching threat, growing closer with each slow step. And we notice the radiating heat bouncing off the metal walls, roof and floor – the room is heating up drastically.
DANNY
Clara?!
23 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
Clara presses herself against the door.
CLARA
Danny! Are you-
24 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
Sweat has started to accumulate on Danny's face.
DANNY
I'm fine! I just…
He turns his head to see the Warrior almost upon him now.
DANNY
Just got a bit of a problem.
25 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
She shifts view to Velk, his progress in burning through the door minimal from the looks of it.
CLARA
Yeah, I guesed as much! Can't you go any faster?!
VELK
The metal is thicker than the previous one. It will take longer to proceed.
CLARA
We don't have longer!
She groans angrily before hitting her head gently against the metal, then letting it sit – her forehead now resting against the door.
CLARA
Danny, I don't- I-
26 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
Danny turns to face his foe head-on, the sweat dripping off him as he moves.
DANNY
Yeah... Don't think going down with my back turned would be a very honourable death for a soldier.
27 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
She shakes her head furiously.
CLARA
Don't you dare. Don't you dare!
28 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
He exhales, then inhales deeply. His eyes widen.
29 INT. REBEL BASE, CORRIDOR - DAY
Her please echo down the corridor.
CLARA
No!
She looks at Velk, her eyes full of fear-
CLARA
Do something.
[Track 12 ends]
DOCTOR (oc)
Fine, fine-
[Track 13: The Doctor Will See You Now 0:00 - 0:33] Clara looks, the Doctor standing a few feet away – hero pose on full display; hands on hips, legs spread apart, smirk on his face.
DOCTOR
But just this once.
He jumps into action, striding forward and pulling out the sonic. The Time Lord begins to use it on the door, scanning around the frame of it.
DOCTOR
Semi-deadlock security system. Don't see that too often.
CLARA
Just shut up with the rubbish and get it open!
In that moment, pressure releases from the frame and the door begins to open to reveal-
Danny Pink, collapsing back into Clara's arms, unconscious and sweating profusely. As she tends to him, the Doctor steps into the Testing Station.
DOCTOR (oc)
Very warm in here.
CLARA
He's struggling to breathe!
The Doctor steps back out again, sonicing aimlessly at the roof. The alarm ceases and the lighting returns to normal.
DOCTOR
Yeah, well, someone's put the oven on. He'll be fine. Here-
He unzips a pocket in his suit, retrieving a glass of water and handing it over.
DOCTOR
Drink up, PE. You'll need it for all the…
The Time Lord's attention drifts. Clara doesn't even bat an eyelid and instead gets to helping Danny drink.
30 INT. REBEL BASE, TESTING STATION - DAY
The Doctor wanders back in, kneeling down and examining the nearest green puddle.
DOCTOR
Quite the party I missed out on.
Velk steps in. [Track 13 ends]
DOCTOR
Bit warm for you, isn't it?
VELK
The heat is shifting. I will be fine for the moment.
DOCTOR
Mmm.
VELK
The human male's pleas indicated a greater threat in here – but there is nothing?
DOCTOR
Nothing now. Something was here…
[Track 14: Making Water] He nods toward the puddle, and Velk realises. The Ice Warrior bows his head, placing his arm across his chest in respect. The Doctor observes this act, putting on a confused expression.
DOCTOR
You honour even your enemies.
VELK
Traitors or not, we were brothers still.
The Doctor remains silent and instead moves off. He quickly finds himself kneeling down by a small-ish hole in the wall – freshly made by the looks of it - hidden previously by the control panels scattered about. Said hole is about big enough to crawl through – leading out onto the surface of Mars.
DOCTOR
Seems we have a nimble enemy on-hand.
VELK
What could have done this?
The Time Lord stands up from examining the hole and the scorch marks around it, turning to Velk with a frown etched into his face.
DOCTOR
I have an idea of what.
VELK
...The plague?
DOCTOR
The living plague.
CUT TO:
Danny is still unconscious, now lying in here instead of the corridor - having been moved off-screen. Clara is sitting by his side, looking over at the Doctor as he explains.
DOCTOR
A plague is a disease. And a disease… Well, a disease isn't normally alive. Not traditionally alive, anyway. Not in the way that we're alive. I've been meaning to look into it properly, but always find myself doing anything else out of sheer boredom-
CLARA
Doctor.
DOCTOR
I'll get to the point, then. This little plague running amok on Mars is not so little after all. It's clearly very dangerous, and it's clearly intelligent. And, being intelligent as it is, it's learnt. It's advanced forwards. It kills in seconds rather than hours now, as we can see here.
He gestures around at the numerous puddles of former Martians.
DOCTOR
If it's smart enough to change itself to kill more effectively… It's most likely sentient too. It knows who it's killing, what it's killing, and how it's killing. And it may even have a reason for killing, an objective, perhaps - which is the worst case scenario. Questions?
Clara shakes her head.
CLARA
Doesn't make sense.
DOCTOR
I'm sure it doesn't – but it checks out with the state of this place. Ice Warriors turned to soup, a destroyed containment unit, and a boiling temperature. Bit of brain power and it all adds up quite nicely.
VELK
This could be catastrophic for the reformation of the Empire.
DOCTOR
Yes, yes, it could. And it most likely will. But I might be able to stop it. Just need a plan.
CLARA
We need to find the thing first! And how do you find a deadly disease? Because it finds you most of the time.
DOCTOR
Agreed. Who's up for being bait?
CLARA
What?!-
DOCTOR
No, no. Forget that. I'm an idiot. You think like a plague to find a plague. And what does a plague want to do most of all?
CLARA
Uh- Spread! It wants to spread, right?
DOCTOR
Correct. Seek, locate-
CLARA
Destroy.
DOCTOR
And if it wants to spread, to all those different worlds out there, to all those different people, then it's going to need a vessel. A physical body to use and move and murder.
CLARA
So-
DANNY
It's taken control of an Ice Warrior.
The Doctor, Clara and Velk all turn, looking at Danny as he gets up, somewhat pained by doing so.
CLARA
You're awake-
Clara hugs him tightly.
CLARA
I thought you were a goner.
DANNY
Nearly was.
DOCTOR
We'll throw the celebratory party later - clowns and all. For now… You were saying?
DANNY
The leader of the… the rebellion. He was taken over by that thing. It was like his flesh was replaced by fire. Living fire.
DOCTOR
Oh, isn't that wonderful? Yes, yes, just brilliant. Now we have a living, sentient fire plague mixed together with an enraged Ice Warrior rebel leader, a rebel leader very much intent on rebuilding the old Martian Empire in place of the new one – using all means necessary!
The Doctor catches his breath as he paces around.
DOCTOR
I can only assume the internal struggle is a wild one.
DANNY
You think he's still alive?
DOCTOR
Not certain, no. But we've yet to be swatted out by the other rebel Warriors, which means they're otherwise occupied.
VELK
They will realise that their leader is no longer-
DOCTOR
A group of broken soldiers living off of hope without any real plans? They won't bat an eyelid at their new saviour, made of flames or not.
DANNY
What do you suggest we do then?
DOCTOR
Finally, a good question! And from PE of all people. You'll make a maths teacher yet.
The Doctor's pace shifts into a stride, the Time Lord pondering to himself as he goes.
DOCTOR
They'll be too busy with their new messiah to notice if a certain friendly Ice Warrior sneaks in-
He turns to Velk, a big eerie grin on full display. [Track 14 ends]
31 INT. REBEL BASE, MEETING ROOM - DAY
[Track 15: Hexadecimals] A huge dome - bigger than the one in previous scenes. The place is packed with Ice Warriors. At least thirty, perhaps forty. The lighting is somewhat dim, but the dais at the very front of the room is well-lit. On said dais, 'Vaard' stands tall. Still hot to the touch, still on fire, armour still scorched... An Ice Warrior enters the room carefully, not attracting any attention as he does - presumably this is Velk.
VAARD
My brothers.
A resounding hiss from most of the other Warriors – and not a pleasant one either.
VAARD
I understand the confusion. I am not what I once was, for I am superior now. Something changed me. And gave me insight. Our methods before were mellow, unimportant, affecting none and no-one. But today that changes. For today, the universe is to be dominated. The Ice Warriors have stood by too long, too unsure. Some had attempted domination before, but they lacked the ability to succeed. We, as a race, remained in the shadows until conflict was brought upon us, but, little did we know, soon the entire universe would attack. The-
A falter, a thought, and it continues…
VAARD
The Federation brought rules down on our people. They attempt to control us. The mighty Martian race will not be controlled. We are free for as long as we fight. So, do you fight with me? My brothers? My children?
The question hangs in the air for a moment before a generally positive hiss occurs – not at the same time, not in sync, a bit like a round of applause.
VAARD
To begin, we attack the enemy. The direct enemy, here on Mars. The-
Another falter. And another moment's thought for it…
32 INT. REBEL BASE, MONITORING ROOM
Clara and Danny watch events unfolding on one large screen divided into a number of different sections, all sections set to watch the Meeting Room.
CLARA
Ice Warriors aren't prone to warmth, right? So, why are they siding with this thing that's the literal embodiment of their enemy?
DOCTOR (oc)
Like I said before: they're desperate. Definitely concerned about your hearing.
The Doctor emerges - with a bit of struggle - from beneath the control panel under the screen of monitors, sonicing a computer chip as he gets to his feet.
DOCTOR
Speaking of hearing, if Velk activated that listening matrix I gave him properly, then this-
A fizzle, and a pop, and then-
VAARD (oc)
To begin, we attack the enemy. The direct enemy, here on Mars. The-
That falter from before.
VAARD (oc)
The Ice Warriors who side with the Federation. They possess technology we don't. Our weapons are greater, but they have a teleporter. A transmat machine that we will use to destroy all who stand against us. Are we in agreement?
Via the monitors, a resounding hiss is ejected, a bit like cheering.
CLARA
Not good.
DOCTOR
The Siege of the Ice Warriors… OK, time to get involved.
DANNY
How? What can we possibly do?
DOCTOR
Get to the transmat before the rebels do, but we need to move now.
CLARA
What about Velk?
DOCTOR
If he's not an idiot, then he'll stick with them and pretend he's an actual rebel for the time being, now move!
They hurry out. [Track 15 ends]
33 EXT. THE FORBIDDEN ZONE - DAY
[Track 16: Stealing A TARDIS] The Doctor, Clara and Danny escape through the hole in the corridors created earlier, and they start to make their way across the landscape as quickly as possible in those clunky space suits.
CUT TO:
The other side of the zone, one of those huge domes opens up, the Ice Warriors marching out as it does – all of them led by 'Vaard'.
34 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, ENTRANCE - DAY
Skeeno enters with two Warriors behind him just as the Doctor, Danny and Clara come down on an elevator-style platform.
SKEENO
Your return was not anticipated.
CLARA
We have an update on the situation.
DOCTOR
Lots of updates, in fact.
CLARA
Too many updates.
DANNY
You need to get your men ready for an attack immediately.
DOCTOR
Rebels are on their way with intent to very much kill. They want your transmat equipment.
SKEENO
They are only able to transport-
CLARA
Two at a time, yeah, we know. But they don't. And they really want to use it to take down the Federation head-on.
SKEENO
They would be slaughtered at the first step.
DOCTOR
Maybe normally, but they have a plague on their side- Look, look, I'll explain in a bit. Just take my word for it, and prep your soldiers and your defences, and be ready for a fight.
CUT TO:
35 EXT. MARS SURFACE - DAY
The rebellion comes into view on the vast rock surface. Marching. On the attack. Leading them is, of course, Vaard - or, as he is now, the Burning Warrior.
36 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, ENTRANCE - DAY
BOOM! Dust crashes inwards due to an explosion. From the lingering smoke, a group of Ice Warriors emerge alongside their leader.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
Spread out. The transmat must be located immediately. Eradicate any and all non-rebel Ice Warriors.
The Martians exchange uncertain glances, but the Burning Warrior doesn't bother to look back at them and see their hesitation. Instead, he moves forward, entering the tunnel system.
37 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TUNNELS - DAY
The Burning Warrior marches forwards, but is ambushed by two Ice Warriors who crash through fake walls in an attempt to kill. One lets off a single shot from his wrist device but 'Vaard' simply absorbs the attack, letting out a blast of literal fire in-turn and killing both immediately. He proceeds onward, killing any ambushing Ice Warriors on his way - and with extreme ease too.
38 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, OPERATIONS ROOM - DAY
Skeeno, Clara, and Danny watch everything unfolding on the multiple monitors. The commander hisses.
SKEENO
We are outnumbered.
The Doctor paces around in the background.
CLARA
Doctor, what do we do? They're getting crushed out there.
DOCTOR
Distract him. Or try.
CLARA
What? Distract who?
DOCTOR
Fire boy. The plague! Distract a plague. There. Do that. You can cross it off your bucket list if you like-
CLARA
It's not on my bucket list!
DOCTOR
Well, it is now! I need some time. I think I have a rough idea of what it's going to do. And if I'm right, there's only one way to stop it.
His expression is of utter seriousness for a moment but he hides it quickly.
CLARA
Can you not, for once, be vague?!
DOCTOR
No. Good luck.
The Doctor scurries out of the room before Clara can protest any further.
CLARA
Guess that's that, then.
DANNY
We'd be dead in seconds. You saw what it did to those soldiers - we'll need a proper strategy, and we don't exactly have time to think one up.
CLARA
Danny, I know. I do. But a lot could be at stake if we don't buy the Doctor some time. Strategies take too long!
DANNY
I-
SKEENO
I shall accompany you.
CLARA
You might die.
SKEENO
Then so be it.
Clara lets out a huff.
CLARA
Okay then.
39 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
The Doctor comes running in, skidding slightly to a stop almost comically. His eyes dart about, trying to find a specific panel to work at. A moment later and he decides, quickly operating a set of switches and pushing a number of buttons at what looks to be the main console.
40 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
An Ice Warrior standing guard at the main entrance is obliterated by fire, left as nothing but ash in seconds. The Burning Warrior steps in and lets out a deep hiss-
Clara is sitting on the teleport pad with a smug smile on her face, Skeeno by her side, and Danny nearby as well.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
Move.
CLARA
Or what?
The Burning Warrior steps forward aggressively.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
I will make your death a painful one.
CLARA
Yeah, thought so. You could just kill us all right now, though, right?
Danny observes as Clara stands up, swagger in her movement.
CLARA
You are, after all, a plague. An airborne one, even.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
Yes… And you would die beautifully.
CLARA
Never heard of a beautiful death before. Unless you count sacrificing yourself for someone.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
And you will sacrifice yourself?
CLARA
Nah! Not my cup of tea, personally. Got stuff to do. A bucket list, apparently. Plus, you wouldn't kill me, would you? Not right now, at least.
The Burning Warrior hisses again.
CLARA
You like the thrill of it all, don't you? For once, you get to properly feel, rather than whatever you feel normally as a floating cloud of invisible specs.
The Warrior's clamp-like hands clench, the creature growing increasingly agitated.
41 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
The Doctor pushes one final button, and a flashing red light engulfs the screen he'd been working at as a result. [Track 16 ends] He steps back, closes his eyes for a moment, sad almost. Then he turns, and he turns to face two Ice Warriors.
DOCTOR
Friend or foe?
They grab him.
DOCTOR
Foe it is.
The Doctor is dragged off. But as he's taken out, he looks back at the console he was working at to see the flashing red has ceased, an 'ARE YOU SURE?' screen having taken its place. His eyes widen.
42 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
[Track 17: Looking For A Way Out] The stand-off is still as it was, Danny possessing a nervous look now.
CLARA
How is it, anyway? The body, I mean. You're on fire - literally - but an Ice Warrior is still inside there, somewhere beneath the flames, otherwise you wouldn't… or couldn't exist, right? I'm right, aren't I?
THE BURNING WARRIOR
He had great plans. Plans to set the destiny of the Ice Warriors correct. His hate, his memories… They are perfect. Perfect for this. For me. For now. And I will utilise his ideas perfectly. The destiny of the universe is to change forever.
DOCTOR (oc)
Destiny, destiny, destiny…
The Burning Warrior turns to see the Doctor brought into the room by, presumably, a rebel. He's pushed to his knees promptly.
DOCTOR
Always comes back to destiny, doesn't it? Always thought that destiny's like a shelf: it'll slant after a while. And the Ice Warriors… and the universe... Their destiny has fallen off the wall.
CLARA
What happened to your plan?!
DOCTOR
Trouble. Going to need a plan B.
The Warrior of Flames faces Clara again, the fire within churning more and more – almost breaching the confines of the armour as it does. Skeeno steps forward as the walking plague goes for Clara, but, unfortunately, the commander is turned to dust instantly by a blast of fire.
CLARA
No-
The Burning Warrior grabs Clara, raising her up into the air by the throat.
DANNY
Clara!
Danny steps forward to intervene- but a blast interrupts him. Clara is dropped as the Burning Warrior's attention draws back to the doorway of the room, where the rebel from a moment ago is stood, hissing, steam floating off from his recently fired wrist weapon.
CLARA
Velk?
He fires another shot, and then another, and another, but all the blasts are simply absorbed by Vaard's armour.
The Burning Warrior lets out a blast of fire from its wrist weapon, the flames colliding directly with the rebel, now identified as Velk, burning and sending him to the ground as a result – but not destroying him entirely as it had done to the others.
DOCTOR
Clara, run! Get to the control room, now!
The Doctor takes out his sonic as Clara makes a dash out of the room, Danny following her, dodging a blast of fire in the process. The Time Lord raises the device, aiming it at the Burning Warrior as a threat.
DOCTOR
Sonic technology. Advanced sonic technology. You're made of particles, aren't you? This could discombobulate you in seconds.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
You lie.
DOCTOR
Willing to take that risk? I wouldn't, given your current position. You've worked hard to get here.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
I could invade your body and boil you from the inside within seconds.
DOCTOR
You could, yes. So, I suppose the question of the hour is: who's faster?
Beat. [Track 17 ends]
43 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
[Track 18: A Drink First] Clara and Danny run in.
CLARA
Keep an eye on the door, I need to… to figure out why the Doctor wanted us in here.
She walks off, leaving Danny to mind the door. He glances at her as she starts to look around, concerned.
CLARA
There was a reason he said this room specifically. Has to be, right?
DANNY
What about that?
He gestures toward the monitor that once displayed that 'ARE YOU SURE?' screen. It now shows a sequence of text. Clara moves over to it, reading the words promptly.
CLARA
Lots of stuff here. Alien stuff. I- I don't know what to do.
Danny steps up, grabbing Clara's hand.
DANNY
Take it slow. Figure it out. Yeah?
She nods, an appreciative smile on her face, before looking back to the monitor- And a light bulb goes off in her head, their intertwined hands breaking as she operates a control. The screen changes.
CLARA
Oh no. No, no, no. That can't be his… He can't have-
DANNY
...He had no plan, then.
44 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
Dust falls from the ceiling, the Doctor and the Burning Warrior aiming their respective weapons at one another still - the Time Lord with his sonic, and the Warrior with his wrist weapon.
DOCTOR
Seems like your rebel army are doing well for themselves.
A hiss is received in response.
DOCTOR
Very articulate wording, well done. So-
He glances at Velk on the floor - he's dead. The Doctor swiftly brings his attention back up to his opponent.
DOCTOR
Going to take the Earth first, I suppose?
THE BURNING WARRIOR
The teleport is the perfect weapon. Once I have integrated myself, I will spread everywhere.
DOCTOR
Ah. Appropriate with your branding then. Sorry, one moment-
He activates the sonic briefly, aiming it upwards as he does so, before bringing it back down to face off against the Burning Warrior.
45 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
A ringing noise for a moment until a pop- Danny and Clara look around as the Doctor's voice comes through.
DOCTOR (oc)
Dawdling is bad for the eyes according to the Reneks - what's taking you so long?
CLARA
You mean what's taking us so long blowing this place to high hell and us with it?! Yeah, good question!
46 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
The Doctor looks irritated.
DOCTOR
Clara, we haven't got any other option.
47 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
CLARA
So?! We- we think of something else!
DOCTOR (oc)
There isn't anything else.
CLARA
There is always something else.
48 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
THE BURNING WARRIOR
You plan to self-destruct the base?
The Time Lord sighs.
DOCTOR
Yes, yes. That's my plan. I mean, even if I did discombobulate you, you'd still come back. Plagues always stick around - most of the time, anyway. Eradicate you entirely in a big explosion, and you're gone for good.
49 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
Tears roll down her face.
CLARA
I won't do it. I won't.
DOCTOR (oc)
You have to, or the universe burns.
CLARA
No. No, it's not fair! You're making me like you!
50 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
The Doctor looks down momentarily, before steadying his eye contact with the Burning Warrior, sonic still at the ready, practically holding the creature in-place with the threat of it.
CLARA (oc)
There are Ice Warriors in this base. Some that are asleep in their hibernation units with no idea what's going on out here. Living, breathing, dreaming, innocent Ice Warriors that don't deserve to die this way!
DOCTOR
I know.
51 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
DOCTOR (oc)
We are made of decisions.
CLARA
Don't you dare.
DOCTOR (oc)
I'm asking you to make a decision right now, not for the good of us, not for the good of the Ice Warriors, but for the good of the universe. A handful will die, but not all. They live. You know that. It's not the same as what I had to do, but no, that doesn't make it any easier, doesn't make it better or more acceptable. But it makes it just a bit more bearable to live with. Or die with.
Beat.
CLARA
You told me decisions define us forever. Even the small ones. Well, this- this is one of the big ones! Does this define me? As a murderer?
52 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM - DAY
He looks at the Burning Warrior, hate in his eyes, anger boiling within the Time Lord quickly by the looks of his face, his temper rising to the surface, sweat accumulating on his flesh as a result of this tense moment.
DOCTOR
No. Because I was wrong. Decisions can define us... if we let them. But not always. Not forever.
53 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
CLARA
God, I hate you.
Danny places a hand on her shoulder. [Track 18 ends]
DANNY
We… we can do it together.
She looks at him, tears lingering.
CLARA
Why aren't you telling me no? We're both going to die.
[Track 19: The Golden Arrow 0:00 - 0:59]
DANNY
Because we have to. If it gets out, if it gets to Earth- We can't let that happen. I don't like to agree with him, but the Doctor's right. It's dangerous. I saw that back where it was being held. Those soldiers were nothing in seconds.
Her shoulders droop, visibly defeated.
CLARA
Guess we haven't got a choice then.
Clara moves back to the console, having drifted slightly during the argument. She pushes a button, multiple red flashes occur, followed swiftly by that 'ARE YOU SURE?' screen from before. Danny steps up next to her, placing his hand over hers on the button to initiate the destruction.
An alarm wails.
54 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, TRANSMAT ROOM
The Burning Warrior hisses at the Doctor.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
You'll die with us.
DOCTOR
Uh, actually, no I won't.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
What?
DOCTOR
Did I forget to mention? I worked out you're a fast evolving plague, so if I'd let you onto what I was really doing, you'd be off and away in seconds. Whilst I was in the control room, switched two codes around.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
What are you- AARGH!
Ice pours in from the vents, and the Warrior keels to the ground.
DOCTOR
Switched the self-destruct code with the ice reserves code, just to be safe - Plan C, if you will. Didn't you know Mars had water? You may be a plague, but you're still in the form of fire.
THE BURNING WARRIOR
Make… it… stop!
DOCTOR
It's as good as a cure.
The Doctor pushes the Burning Warrior off the transmat and reprograms it quickly, disappearing in the white aura.
55 INT. UNDERGROUND IW BASE, CONTROL ROOM - DAY
Ice surrounds Danny and Clara, who are huddling together for warmth. They begin to fall unconscious due to the serious drop in temperature, but as they black out, they hear the familiar wheezing of- [Track 19 ends]
FADE TO BLACK:
56 INT. TARDIS - DAY
[Track 20: Clara Lives] Danny awakens in a fit, breathing heavily and looking around. His blurry vision fades quickly, and he realises where he is– and that Clara is by his side.
DANNY
What-
Clara hugs him tightly, and he lets out a groan as a result.
CLARA
Sorry.
The Doctor emerges from the upper-level of the console room, holding a small pile of books and placing them on the stairs, one by one, as he goes, eventually laying one on every step, out of the way as to not disrupt walking up them. He and Clara are out of their space suits now, as is Danny himself.
DOCTOR
Hugs tend to kill. Especially in this situation.
CLARA
What happened back there?
The Doctor doesn't answer, opting instead to start working at the console.
DANNY
How are we-
DOCTOR
Activated the transmat to place me directly outside the TARDIS, which I then used to materialise around you two. Simple enough solution.
DANNY
...And the Ice Warriors?
DOCTOR
Frozen back into hibernation, and the plague is dead. Couldn't survive in that environment. It did the job and got any traces of the plague out of our system. Don't wanna be bringing that back to Earth, do we?
Clara looks for a moment, taking in the info, then realises.
CLARA
You made me think I was killing them. That I was going to destroy those Ice Warriors in that base.
DOCTOR
Nothing else could've been done. If the plague had worked out what was going on, it would've evolved to become resistant to the base's cooling system.
Danny looks at Clara.
DANNY
Are you okay?
She doesn't answer. She just continues to stare at the Doctor, anger boiling up.
DOCTOR
Like I said, there was no other option. I couldn't take the risk of it figuring out my plan.
CLARA
Doesn't make it right.
DOCTOR
Maybe not. I- I apologise. On the bright side, the Ice Warriors aren't gone. They never will be. They might be in stasis for a few years, but quite a few hives are still scattered about the universe, on their way home. They'll wake up soon enough, and their race will continue to thrive for a long time to come.
DANNY
This isn't going too far?
CLARA
Unfortunately, this is a normal Wednesday for him. And he did apologise, which makes a change.
The mood of the moment jolts suddenly as the Time Lord steps away from his work at the console.
DOCTOR
Well, PE?
DANNY
What?
DOCTOR
No 'Thank you, handsome Doctor?' I don't know why I bother sometimes.
DANNY
I don't care whether you save me or not. I was a soldier, it's what I signed up for. Falling on the front lines. What matters most is that you saved those innocent people, and you did. So... thank you for that.
The TARDIS lands, and Danny gives the Doctor a look, before leaving.
DOCTOR
Not even a thank you for saving his life! Honestly, some people.
CLARA
He's a good man, whether you believe it or not.
He glowers. [Track 20 ends]
DOCTOR
There's no such thing as a good man.
Clara goes to say more, but stops herself. She shakes her head subtly, disappointed, hesitates for a moment, but ultimately walks out, leaving the Time Lord alone. After a moment of staring at the doors, he leans against the console and rubs his eyes before focusing in on the handbrake.
DOCTOR
Just a bad man making the right decision every now and again.
The words linger for a moment. The quiet taking hold of the scene. Then, the Doctor slides the handbrake round and-
