1 INT. BEDROOM - DAY
A teenage girl, Holly, is fast asleep in a stereotypical teenage girl bedroom - the windows are drawn, the wallpaper is yellow, but covered mostly with posters and revision techniques. Her eyes open slowly, and then they glisten as she realises:
HOLLY (Quietly)
Christmas!
[Track 1: Sparkle] She gets out of bed, runs to the window and opens the curtains.
It is snowing. Holly gasps in delight.
JOSEPH (oc)
He's been! Santa's been!
Holly smiles, grabs her dressing gown and runs out of the room.
2 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Joseph is running around the room excitedly as Holly walks in. Her parents are sat on the sofa, amused.
JOSEPH
He's been! Look, Holly, Santa's been!
HOLLY
Merry Christmas to you too.
MIRANDA
Who's going to open their present first?
JOSEPH
Ooh, me, me, me!
Joseph rustles through his stocking and takes out a present.
MIRANDA
Isn't Christmas exciting?
HOLLY
I know...
He rips it open. It's a toy robot.
JOSEPH
Cool! Thanks, Santa!
PAUL
Your turn, Holly.
Holly sighs.
HOLLY
I guess...
Holly opens one of them. It's a chemistry set.
PAUL
Isn't that the chemistry set you've wanted for ages?
HOLLY
Yeah! Nice, thanks. Come on, Joseph.
Whilst Joseph looks in his stocking, Miranda, their mum, starts talking.
MIRANDA
Right, so after this, we have a strict schedule to adhere to if we want Christmas to run smoothly. Relatives are coming over at half eleven, so we've got three and a half hours to prepare. I'm collecting the turkey in an hour. The vegetables need to be started by the time I get back. Okay? That's not directed at anyone in particular, but if they're not done, I will be angry.
Joseph opens another. It is the Jungle Book.
JOSEPH
Sweet!
HOLLY
I can't do anything till twelve. I'm meeting Rosy in a minute.
PAUL
I'll do the vegetables.
Holly opens another. It's a gardening set.
MIRANDA
Remember, if you're not helping out in the morning, you need to help with supper.
HOLLY
Fine.
MIRANDA
Christmas is so stressful. If only we had a time machine.
Holly glances up at her mum. [Track 1 ends]
3 EXT. HILL - DAY
[Track 2: The Halassi Androvar 00:00-00:35] Clara and the Doctor stand outside the TARDIS. It's snowing, and they're on a hill.
CLARA
See, isn't this nice?
DOCTOR
It's cold.
CLARA
It's December, what did you expect? I'm surprised it's snowing, though. It never snows. First White Christmas in ages. Are you sure this is Earth?
DOCTOR
Course I am, now come on, come on, come on. We need to try and find the source of the signal.
They start heading down the hill.
CLARA
And it's not from Earth, I assume?
DOCTOR
No, some sort of communication from another planet.
CLARA
Why don't you do that, whilst I go Christmas shopping?
DOCTOR
Or you could help me out.
CLARA
It's Christmas Day, I'm having lunch with family in a few hours, I don't have long to buy presents.
DOCTOR
Clara, I've got a time machine. You've got all the time in the world. Now, come on. We've got work to do.
They look down at the town.
DOCTOR
Merry Christmas...
Pan down to the snow-lain streets. [Track 2 ends]
ROLL TITLES
4 EXT. TOWN CENTRE - DAY
Holly and Rosy look round, bored. There are a few people milling about, but all the shops are closed.
ROSY
Nothing? Nothing's open?!
HOLLY
You are the worst planner ever. It's Christmas Day, what did you think would be open?
Rosy sighs.
HOLLY
Well, what now, maestro?
ROSY
Let's go to the park.
HOLLY
Yeah, that'll look really nice with all the snow.
ROSY
Not going to be able to get a Christmas present for my dad there, though.
[Track 3: The Streets of Rio 00:59-1:49]
HOLLY
Well, that's what you get for leaving it to the last minute.
Rosy and Holly walk down. As they leave, the Doctor and Clara walk past.
CLARA
So, what next?
DOCTOR
Ask the locals.
The Doctor and Clara walk over to an elderly man.
DOCTOR
Hello there, pudding brain, mind if we ask you some questions?
JEFFRIES
Well-
DOCTOR
Good, good. Thank you. Have you noticed anything strange around here?
JEFFRIES
Like what?
DOCTOR
Strange lights in the sky, rockets, that sort of thing.
JEFFRIES
Uh...I don't...think I have...although there was a new postman yesterday.
DOCTOR
Is that it?
JEFFRIES
Normally we have Trevor. Lovely man, never late. But yesterday, we had a new boy. Don't know his name, 'cos he didn't say hello. Trevor always used to say hello.
The Doctor walks off.
CLARA
Thanks for your time.
She walks off.
CLARA
Say hi to Trevor for me!
JEFFRIES
Wish I could...
CLARA
Okay, that was a bit of a waste of time.
DOCTOR
Why do old people even exist? They just sit around all day and do knitting. If I had my way, I'd ban them.
CLARA
Have you seen yourself lately? You're not one to talk.
JEFFRIES
Although...
The two of them stop and turn around.
JEFFRIES
There is that old house.
DOCTOR
Tell me more.
He grins. [Track 3 ends]
5 EXT. SILENTS' STREET - DAY
[Track 4: An Abandoned Base] The three of them walk down the road.
CLARA
Haunted?
JEFFRIES
I'm sure of it. It's just funny-looking. You know. There's leaves all over it. They need to get a gardener. My wife got a gardener last year, he's very good. Comes round once a month. I used to do that sort of thing, but, you know, with my old hip and that -
DOCTOR
Very nice, but if we could get back to the house?
JEFFRIES
Oh yes. Yes, s'very old. Funny thing is, it never used to be so overgrown. Only about six months back. But it's not like anyone moved out or anything. At least, there was no sign up front. Her indoors keeps saying mebbe they all died. I keep telling her, Joan, don't be so morbid.
CLARA
Cheery(!)
DOCTOR
Yes, brilliant. Where is this house?
JEFFRIES
Uh, just round the corner.
6 EXT. VILLAGE - DAY
Holly and Rosy are walking down.
HOLLY
I mean, it had the components to make loads of cool reactions!
ROSY
Sounds incredibly boring, but okay. Anything else?
HOLLY
Well, I got one of those massive perfumes.
ROSY
Ooh, which one?
HOLLY
It was one of those Chanel things. It was really big though. It'll last me for years! And I got one of those candle-making sets. All these chemicals that you mix together and it turns into a candle.
ROSY
Wow, this next year for you will be heaps of fun.
HOLLY
Shut up!
ROSY
All I'm saying is, a chemistry set, a candle-
HOLLY
Wait, shh!
They listen and hear a faint voice in the background.
ROSY
Oh no, it's Mr Jeffries!
HOLLY
Sir Talk-a-lot! He'll ramble on for ages about his Christmas turkey.
ROSY
Quick, cross the road.
They quickly cross the road.
HOLLY
Behind the bench.
They crouch behind the bench. The Doctor, Clara and the old man walk along.
ROSY
Who are they?
HOLLY
Dunno. Feel sorry for 'em though.
JEFFRIES
And I said, Joan, you don't need to get me anything for Christmas, as long as I've got you.
The Doctor rolls his eyes. [Track 4 ends]
DOCTOR
Now is this the house?
He points at a tall creepy house, guarded by some rusty gates. [Track 5: Browsing]
JEFFRIES
Why, yes, that is the house.
DOCTOR
Excellent. Thank you very much for your time, Mr Jeffries.
JEFFRIES
My pleasure, sir. Christmas is the time for giving, after all.
CLARA
Of course. Thanks, Jim.
They smile him off. When he turns the corner, they stop smiling and get to work. Meanwhile, Rosy goes to get up, but Holly stops her.
HOLLY Wait. I want to see what they're doing.
CLARA
Blimey, that man could talk for England.
DOCTOR
But he was right. Look. There's no snow on the other side of the gates.
CLARA
Or on the roof.
DOCTOR
All suggesting...
CLARA
They need to update their insulation?
DOCTOR
Well, I was going to say that something much more sinister is going on, but now that you mention it, that is an equally plausible explanation. Come on. Let's get in.
They start to climb over.
HOLLY
They're climbing over.
ROSY
That house has always given me the creeps.
HOLLY
I know what you mean. Look! There's not even snow on the roof.
ROSY
But it was snowing all last night.
The Doctor jumps down off the gates, followed by Clara.
DOCTOR
Nice one. Come on.
They walk off toward the house.
HOLLY
Let's follow them.
ROSY
What?
The two of them get up. Holly crosses the road, and Rosy starts to follow her.
ROSY
Are you mad?
HOLLY
Come on, aren't you a little intrigued?
ROSY
But I've got to be back by three.
HOLLY
Come on, we've got ages. Where's your spirit of adventure?
Rosy squirms, then runs over.
HOLLY
Come on, give me a boost.
ROSY
Why can't you give me a boost?
HOLLY
Because it was my idea.
ROSY
Exactly. You should be giving me a boost, because I don't want to do it.
HOLLY
Just do it, will you?
Rosy reluctantly holds out her hands. Holly steps in them and then climbs over. Rosy follows her.
HOLLY
See? That adrenaline rush.
ROSY
This is a bit exciting. We're like spies!
HOLLY
Don't ruin the moment. Come on. Stay quiet.
They sneak off.
7 EXT. HOUSE ENTRANCE - DAY
The Doctor and Clara look up at the house.
CLARA
Bit off-putting.
DOCTOR
Right. Clara, go round the back. See if you can get in. I'll see if I can get through a window or something.
CLARA
Fine...
DOCTOR
And be careful!
CLARA
What's going to happen? I'm not going to be strangled by the vines, am I?
DOCTOR
You joke about that...
Holly and Rosy are creeping about on the lawn, behind a bush.
ROSY
What if he's police?
HOLLY
No, I don't think so. He climbed over the gates, that's not a very official thing to do. And, I don't know, he just doesn't seem, policey.
ROSY
We should go back.
HOLLY
No, come on. Let's go that way. Try to get in.
8 EXT. BACKYARD - DAY
Clara wanders round. She sees broken bits of glass near a window that has ivy seeping out, then walks over to a broken door. She tries to push through and it topples down. She walks in.
9 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Holly and Rosy climb in from a window.
ROSY
Hey, look.
She points at a load of ivy coming from the floorboards, and around the walls.
HOLLY
It's weird. It never used to look so overgrown. How did it suddenly become so...
ROSY
Creepy.
Holly wanders over to a shelf. Holly finds weird bits and bobs. Suddenly, an eerie, ethereal noise starts from somewhere in the house. The two girls turn around nervously. [Track 5 ends]
10 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
[Track 6: Pre-Titles] Clara wanders in to the hall. It is also covered in ivy. The Doctor is trying to get through the door. Suddenly, the sounds start, and Clara turns.
DOCTOR (oc)
Clara? Is that you?
CLARA
No, it's not me. It's coming from upstairs.
DOCTOR (oc)
Wait one moment, I'm coming in.
CLARA
Yeah, yeah...
She walks towards the stairs.
11 EXT. HOUSE ENTRANCE - DAY
The Doctor tries the handle. It doesn't work.
DOCTOR Stupid door, the wood's all warped. Clara! Can you let me in?
12 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
There is no one in the hallway.
DOCTOR (oc)
Clara?
Pan round to see Clara walking up the staircase.
13 INT. LANDING - DAY
Clara reaches the landing and notices a door. It is covered in foliage. She slowly walks towards it.
14 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
The Doctor bangs on the door.
DOCTOR (oc)
Clara! What are you doing?
15 INT. LANDING - DAY
Clara reaches the door. She slowly turns the handle. It opens, and Clara walks in.
16 INT. BEDROOM - DAY
Clara walks in and looks round. There is scientific equipment strewn around the room. Plants cover the walls and floor. A machine in the middle of the room emits the sound. Clara calls down to the Doctor.
CLARA
I'm upstairs! There's all these plants everywhere. And, like, some sort of science equipment. The sound's definitely coming from here. There's like a machine in the room. It's weird. It feels like...alive. Like it's transmitting something. Communicating. I dunno...sort of like it's sending a message. Argh!
Suddenly, ivy vines grab her and pull her.
17 EXT. HOUSE ENTRANCE - DAY
The Doctor hears Clara scream.
DOCTOR
Clara!
He starts trying to break the door down.
18 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Holly and Rosy hear the scream and turn.
ROSY
What the hell-
HOLLY
Come on!
19 EXT. HOUSE - DAY
The Doctor pushes through. The door breaks.
20 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
Holly and Rosy run in. The door suddenly breaks, as the Doctor jumps through. Holly and Rosy jump.
DOCTOR
Who the hell are you?
HOLLY
Your friend's upstairs!
DOCTOR
Clara!
The Doctor pushes past them and runs up the stairs. Holly and Rosy follow.
21 INT. LANDING - DAY
The Doctor runs up, followed by the two girls. He looks round.
DOCTOR
Clara...
He notices a door wide open.
22 INT. BEDROOM - DAY
The Doctor walks in. Holly and Rosy are behind him. The Doctor looks around.
DOCTOR
She was here. This is what she was describing. So she's been taken. That sound's stopped though. Wait a second, who are you two?
HOLLY
We saw you climbing in. We were intrigued.
ROSY
Are you police?
The sound starts up again. The three of them look at the machine in the middle.
DOCTOR
Alive...she was right, it's sending a message. But to whom?
Suddenly, the machine opens up, and reveals a man, covered from head to toe in plants. The Doctor gasps.
It's a Krynoid, taken over a human. He's wearing a postman's outfit.
HOLLY
What is it?
DOCTOR
Krynoid!
ROSY
What's a Krynoid?
DOCTOR
It's that. Living plant, taken over a human host. Well, that solves the mystery of Trevor the postman.
KRYNOID
You have encountered the Krynoids before?
DOCTOR
A few times.
KRYNOID
Then you know what we are capable of.
DOCTOR
Growing to enormous sizes, psychic links with plants, yeah. Where's my friend?
KRYNOID
The female has been taken for testing.
DOCTOR
Testing? Testing what?
KRYNOID
You will also be taken for testing.
Suddenly, ivy wraps around their arms and legs. The three of them struggle as they are dragged to another door. The Krynoid man watches them.
ROSY
What's happening?
HOLLY
Weren't you listening? We're being taken for testing.
DOCTOR
I like that. Hey, scared one. Take a page out of her book. In a tight situation, always be sarcastic.
They are dragged away. [Track 6 ends]
23 INT. LAB - DAY
[Track 7: The Moon] Clara is strapped to a board. In front of her is a big machine, with little machines dotted around it.
CLARA
Hey, let me out! Doctor?
A Krynoid walks in.
CLARA
Who are you?
KRYNOID
We are the Krynoids.
CLARA
What are you doing? What's that machine?
The Krynoid walks over to the machine and starts to fiddle with the controls.
CLARA
I'm guessing I'm Christmas Dinner...now I know how the turkey feels. Tell me your plan. I'm gonna die, so you may as well tell me.
KRYNOID
You are a test subject for our gas.
CLARA
What gas? What's it for?
KRYNOID
The Krynoids are in need of a new breeding planet. Sol 3 has all the ideal conditions for photosynthesis.
CLARA
So you kill all the humans, and take over the planet. But how do you get the gas out there?
KRYNOID
Our children.
24 EXT. VILLAGE - DAY
Ivy creeps out from corners of the village, barely noticeable, but everywhere.
25 INT. LAB - DAY
The Doctor, Holly and Rosy are being held by the Krynoids and they are put into other boards next to Clara. The Krynoids leave.
DOCTOR Clara!
CLARA
Doctor! The ivy, it's dosed with gas. They're going to take over Earth!
DOCTOR
Of course.
HOLLY
What do they need us for?
DOCTOR
Testing the gas on us. They are perfecting it.
ROSY
Wait, let me get this straight. Living plants...taking over Earth...with poison ivy?
HOLLY
Plants are always alive, Rosy.
CLARA
What happens now?
DOCTOR
Houdini.
Clara raises an eyebrow. [Track 7 ends]
26 INT. CORRIDOR - DAY
[Track 8: They're In The Walls] Two Krynoids stand by the machine.
KRYNOID 1
Is the gas ready for testing?
KRYNOID 2
Affirmative.
27 INT. LAB - DAY
The two Krynoids walk in.
DOCTOR
Krynoids! I'll give you a choice. Go now.
KRYNOID 1
Why should we leave? We have you trapped.
DOCTOR
Well, then, it's clear that your observational skills are lacking.
KRYNOID 1
Explain.
[Track 8 ends]
DOCTOR
There used to be four of us.
[Track 9: A Good Man, An Incredible Liar] The Krynoid realises – only the Doctor, Rosy and Clara are still strapped down – there's an empty board.
28 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Holly runs in and looks around.
HOLLY
I need something...
MIRANDA (oc)
Holly? Is that you? I need you to come and set the table.
Holly spots her presents. She bends down, and picks up a gardening set, and her perfume. She smiles.
29 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
Miranda walks along the corridor.
MIRANDA Holly?
30 INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY
Miranda walks in. Holly is nowhere, and the presents are gone. Miranda shrugs and leaves.
31 EXT. VILLAGE - DAY
The ivy is spreading.
32 INT. LAB - DAY
The machine makes a powering up noise.
DOCTOR
What's it doing?
CLARA
It's like it's powering up.
KRYNOID
The master plan advances.
CLARA
The master plan? What's the master plan?
DOCTOR
The poison ivy. It's going to spread, across the world, killing everyone.
ROSY
Well, what happens to us?
KRYNOID
You will be destroyed.
HOLLY (oc)
Not on my watch!
The Krynoids turn to see Holly in the doorway. She is holding a remote control. She presses a button, and a small toy robot walks round the corner. It is on Lego legs that make it the height of Holly. The Krynoids stare in confusion.
The robot walks towards them. It stops before the Krynoid. Holly smiles and presses another button. The robot raises its arm, which holds a massive perfume bottle. Trailing from it is a long hose, which trails off behind Holly. It is attached at the other end to a cooking bowl, filled with a green liquid.
The robot sprays the Krynoid. It falls back and screams in pain.
KRYNOID
You will pay! Argh!
The Krynoid falls down.
ROSY
Is that it? Has the ivy stopped?
DOCTOR
Oh, I doubt it.
The machine is making strange noises, as all four jump to their feet.
DOCTOR
The machine is keeping the ivy functional. We need to stop it!
HOLLY
Got it. Quickly, get out!
She brings out a bowl full of orange liquid. She gets a test tube full of red liquid and starts to pour it into the bowl.
DOCTOR
Well, that's not going to do a lot.
He sonics it.
DOCTOR
Okay, now it will. We need to get out.
The Doctor, Clara, Rosy and Holly escape. [Track 9 ends]
33 EXT. VILLAGE - DAY
The house explodes. They are all watching it. [Track 10: Win Some Lose Some]
CLARA
Not the best Christmas fireworks display I've seen.
ROSY
What happened?
HOLLY
Weed killer. It was in my gardening set. I mixed it with some chemicals from my chemistry set, and poured it into my perfume.
DOCTOR
And the Krynoids all have a psychic link, so they all felt it. And then I just boosted the reactivity of those chemicals to create an explosion.
CLARA
So the Krynoids are gone?
DOCTOR
And so is the poison ivy. All thanks to Holly's Christmas presents.
HOLLY
So, what now? Do you expect us to just forget this ever happened?
DOCTOR
Well, I think you girls deserve a reward for your bravery. Come with me.
He walks away, followed by Clara. The girls look at each other in confusion and then follow.
34 EXT. ALIEN PLANET - DAY
The four sit on a picnic rug. Above them is a star-filled sky, with planets in the distance. They are eating Christmas dinner, and Clara puts a paper hat on a reluctant. They pull crackers and laugh and joke. The Doctor points up at a meteor shower and they all stare in awe.
35 INT. HALLWAY - DAY
Holly walks in. Miranda runs up.
MIRANDA
Where have you been? We're just about to have Christmas lunch, come on.
Holly laughs and follows her in. Through the window, we see the Doctor and Clara.
36 EXT. HOLLY'S HOUSE - DAY
They smile as they watch Holly leaving. Clara puts something in the Doctor's hand.
DOCTOR
What's this?
CLARA
Merry Christmas.
The Doctor unwraps the present in his palm.
It's a bow tie.
His fingers close around it. [Track 10 ends]
