If therapy was dull in black and white, Evalynn hated it even more in color. Everything was the same bland shade of… well she didn't know yet because Evan had driven her straight here after school so she didn't have time to check the Color Key. The only thing in the entire place that wasn't some variation of the bland color was Dr. Sherman's glasses. They were bright and bold and stuck out like a sore thumb.
"Evalynn, sweetie, did you hear what I just asked you?"
Evalynn blinked, focusing her gaze on the therapist on the chair across from her.
"N-no. S-sorry," she stammered.
"Do you have the letter I assigned you this week?"
Evalynn just shook her head, unwilling to admit that she had had the letter completed and printed out, ready for their session… It just didn't quite make it out the door with her. Instead it was in the clutches of her Soulmate while he was probably off getting high somewhere as usual. Dr. Sherman sighed, pushing those bright glasses further up her nose.
"It's been nearly a month since you brought me a letter, Evalynn. May I ask why you haven't been completing your assignment?"
"I j-just don't know what to write," Evalynn shrugged.
She picked at her cast… the part that was visible. After Connor disappeared, she had gotten her jacket out of her locker and put it on to cover up the name so no one would ask her about it. She didn't really feel like explaining why Connor Murphy was the only person who had bothered signing her cast.
"It's not that difficult," Dr. Sherman began. "You just start the way I told you, 'Dear Evalynn Hansen: Today is going to be a good day and here's why.' And then you just list the ways that you are going to make that day good."
"T-that easy?"
"That easy," the therapist nodded. "The hardest part is thinking of how you are going to make that day good, and even that isn't terribly difficult. Understand?"
"I-I think so," Evalynn muttered.
"Great. We have a little more time. Is there anything else on your mind that we should discuss today?"
Dr. Sherman looked at Evalynn expectantly, waiting for her response. Evalynn bit her lip, picking at her cast as she went back to staring at the bland wall. She thought about her day; her conversations in the morning with Alana, Jared and Evan, getting shoved by Connor in the hall, writing the letter, and her Soulmate's discovery of said letter after signing her cast…
Evalynn shook her head, looking back at Dr. Sherman.
"N-no. There's n-nothing."
The therapist studied her for a moment before nodding.
"Very well. I guess we can end a few minutes early, then. Is Evan here to take you home?"
"Y-yes, he is."
"Okie dokie. I'll see you next week, Evalynn. And this time I expect you to have a letter for me, okay?"
Evalynn nodded, standing from the couch she had been seated on for the past forty-five minutes. Exiting the room, she headed over to where Evan sat in the waiting room on his phone. He was probably texting Jared.
"Ready to go?" he asked her.
"Mm-hm."
"How was your session?"
"O-okay," Evalynn shrugged as they climbed into Evan's car.
"Cool. I'm just going to drop you off at home. I'm meeting up with Jared at his house."
"T-that's fine."
Evalynn turned, staring out the window at all the colors that blurred with the movement of the vehicle.
