When Connor entered his house after school, he was immediately confronted by Zoe.
"You were supposed to give me a ride home after school," she told him angrily.
Connor's heart clenched in his chest, wishing he wasn't such a failure that he couldn't even remember to give his sister a ride home. However, before he could give away his true feelings, he got defensive.
"You got home, didn't you?"
"You're such an asshole," Zoe stormed off, stomping up the stairs to her room.
Feeling like even more of a screw-up, Connor headed in the same direction at a much slower pace. He barely paused at her door as he passed it to get to his room, hearing the soft strumming of her guitar from within. When he reached his room, he rolled his eyes as he entered. Unlike every other room in the house, his didn't have a door. His dad had removed it his freshman year when his mom mentioned that she was concerned he was smoking while inside.
He wasn't, not that anyone would believe him. So, he had to deal with having his whole life on display to his family. Changing was the worst part. He had to go in the hall bathroom just so he had some privacy. Plopping down on his bed, he reached into his pocket for his phone, finding the letter he had taken from Evalynn instead.
Connor pulled it out, staring for a moment. He felt bad about taking it. He had only gone into the computer lab because he felt bad for shoving her earlier and wanted to apologize… which he hadn't done. He groaned as he realized that not only was he rude once again, he had told her they could pretend to be friends, instead of acknowledging the whole Soulmate thing.
Skimming the first few lines of the letter again, he suddenly sat up, realizing the implications of what she had written. She thought she was a screw-up… that she was such a failure, she couldn't even get things right with her Soulmate. Connor's eyes widened as he read the final sentence.
'I mean, face it: would anybody even notice if I just… disappeared tomorrow?' He swallowed, reading and re-reading the sentence over and over again. Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Disappeared tomorrow…
"Connor! Dinner!"
Connor ripped his eyes from the letter.
"Yeah!" he yelled back.
Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Connor shoved the letter back in his pocket as he exited his room and headed downstairs to the table. Zoe immediately stopped talking to their mother the second she noticed he had come into the room. Rolling his eyes, he filled a plate before leaving the table. The second he was out of the room, he heard Zoe start back up.
Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Would anybody notice… Evalynn had to know that he'd notice, right? The colors would disappear the second she did anything. He'd probably be the first to notice, now that they had found each other.
The next day, Connor sought her out at lunch. Evalynn was sitting at a table with her twin brother and his Soulmate. He saw her stiffen as he approached.
"Can I talk to you?"
Her eyes widened as she looked up at him. It struck him how pretty the color was. Connor cursed himself for not checking the Color Key when he got home yesterday. He would love to give a name to the hue in her sparkling gaze.
"O-okay," she stammered, standing up.
Evan and Kleinman both stared after the pair curiously as Connor led Evalynn away from the table. The Soulmates made their way to the library where they had more privacy.
"I'd notice."
"W-what?"
Connor turned, meeting Evalynn's confused expression. He swallowed, pulling out the folded letter from his pocket and holding it out to her.
"You asked in this, if anybody would notice if you just disappeared? I'd notice."
She stared at the paper in his hand for a moment, before reaching out and taking it from him.
"Y-you read it?"
"Well… yeah."
Connor watched as she flipped the letter over in her hands. He wished he could know what she was thinking at that moment.
"You'd notice?"
Her voice was so timid, as if she was scared to speak confidently.
"Um… Yeah. I mean, with the colors… I'd probably know before anyone else did…"
"T-the colors," she whispered.
He watched her eyes glance around the room before meeting his own.
"T-thank you."
"You're welcome."
