Connor stared at his Soulmate, mouth agape as she yelled at him.
"It's your fault I didn't succeed! If you had just let them pull the plug, I wouldn't be here!"
"Evalynn?" Heidi spoke softly, but Evalynn was too busy being mad at Connor to notice.
"You know how I feel! You read that letter! Why couldn't you have just let me die?!"
"Why couldn't I... Evalynn, do you have any idea how panicked I was when the colors dulled? I had no idea where you were, or if I would get to you in time! I told you in the library that day, I would be the first person to notice if you tried something, and I was right! And I wasn't about to stand by and watch my world revert to black and white while you died in my arms!"
"I WOULD BE BETTER OFF DEAD!"
"AND WHAT ABOUT US, HUH?! HOW WOULD YOU THINK I WOULD FEEL? HOW DO YOU THINK THEY WOULD FEEL?!"
Evalynn paused, as if just then remembering that there were other people in the room besides her and Connor. Her blue eyes widened as she looked from her mom to Evan and back guiltily.
"M-Mom, I-"
"I think it would be best to have you placed under suicide watch for a while," Heidi whispered, as if scared speaking at a normal tone would set her daughter off.
"S-suicide watch? B-but..."
"It's a good idea, Lynn," Evan spoke in a voice not much louder than their mother's.
"I'll go talk to the doctor," Heidi said, exiting the room.
Evalynn stared after her, mouth slightly agape, as she tried to process what was going on.
"Evalynn, please... Why'd you do it?" Connor finally asked, tone softest it had been since she woke up.
"D-Daniel Collins... H-he said..."
A tear slipped down Evalynn's cheek as she shook her head. Connor and Evan shared a knowing glance, mirroring stony expressions on their faces. They didn't need to know exactly what the jock had said to the girl in the hospital bed to know that it had to have been really bad. Before either boy could say anything else, however, Heidi returned with a doctor in tow.
"Okay, sweetie, this is Dr. Wilkinson. He and his team are going to look after you, alright?"
Evalynn didn't speak, only nodding her head to indicate she understood. Connor's heart broke a little, seeing his Soulmate so helpless and hopeless. Part of him wished he hadn't gotten so angry with her once she was awake, but everything had just caught up to him, causing him to let loose in the only way he knew how: by yelling and getting angry at everyone around him. He felt a tug on his arm, and turned to see Evan attempting to get him to leave the room with him.
Casting one last sad look in Evalynn's direction, Connor followed his Soulmate's twin out into the hall.
"We gotta do something," Evan said once they were out of earshot of the occupants in the room.
"What the fuck are we supposed to do? Collins and his lackeys are practically untouchable."
Evan bit his lip, pacing in front of Connor as he thought. He ran his hand through his hair in an almost desperate motion.
"There has to be something... Whatever he said to her..."
"I know," Connor muttered with a sigh.
He agreed with Evan. If there was any way to give Collins a piece of his mind, he would gladly take it. The bully had landed his Soulmate in a coma for three months. That wasn't something that was easily forgiven.
"What, um... what did she mean about a letter?"
Brown eyes met green ones in surprise. That was something Connor found interesting about the Hansen twins. He figured their father must have had green eyes, because their mother's were the purest blue he'd ever seen. And Evalynn's were that pretty blue flecked with bits of green and gold. Evan's were pure green. He swallowed, glancing back toward the door of Evalynn's room.
"Um... it was a letter to herself that she wrote on the first day of school. I, uh, might have taken it because it talked about me and I sort of freaked out on her about it. She talked about how much of a screw up she was and wondered if anyone would notice if she just... disappeared. I gave it back to her the next day and told her I'd notice."
"That's the day you got her from the table me and Jared were sitting at with her," Evan realized, remembering.
"Yeah," Connor nodded.
"Alright, so what are we gonna do about Collins?"
