Scene 1: Celtic Site
The plains of Ireland. A spectacular view in any time. An impressive limestone ridge gives way in the far distance to the towering mountain ranges. A fire burns in the night. A hustle of noise breaks the quiet as Celts begin to emerge from the nearby tents. Clearly hungry, but used to the order of calm times, they spread out around the pit and sit in the rich grass.
CUT TO:
As they are almost finished cooking, the air begins to change, there's the feeling that a sudden thunderstorm will break.
FRAYSHARX: Looks like we need to return to shelter. Keep those tales on hold, we will get to laugh together later.
[Track 1] Suddenly, something falls overhead. The feeling of a gathering storm breaks.
FRAYSHARX: Bad omens and then good! Night of nights! A fallen star!
KANTAR: Let us go see it! We may yet be rich!
The Celts run off.
ANDRAVAR: Wait! It's not a good idea! Do not go!
Scene 2: Crash Site
The Celts run along. There is a large object covered in rock half-buried into the ground. As some of the rock falls off, a door opens.
KANTAR: A message! From the Gods!
The Celts bow before the four figures that emerge. They are humanoid but much larger than usual, their clothes unfamiliar mechanical suits. Part of their skin is slightly exposed, revealing wires.
COMMANDER CARYLS: We are no Gods. We are here to show you... that the Universe is harsh.
They lift one of their arms, which has been replaced with a cannon. It fires an electrical blast at the Celts. They gasp in shock as they start to fall to the floor. They kill most, only a few manage to escape. The creatures start to spread out across the hills.

Scene 3: Stone Circle
[Track 2] The sun begins to rise over the plains of Ireland, revealing a stone circle. A wheezing noise, the sound of time being ripped apart, rises in the air and a small localised wind scatters the rabbits as the TARDIS materialises. The TARDIS doors open and the Doctor steps out onto the rich grass, taking a long sniff of the summer air and looking round to get his bearings.
DOCTOR: Hurry up you two, you'll miss the sunrise.
Amy and Rory step out of TARDIS.
RORY: Sorry, we were just...
AMY: Oh wow! In a word, glorious. Where are we? Wiltshire?
DOCTOR: Further.
RORY: An alien planet?
DOCTOR: Well, everywhere is alien to someone or other, but no. I've been to loads of stone circles in lots of galaxies, but the ones in Ireland really crackle with power.
The Doctor wanders around and puts his ears to each of the stones in turn.
AMY: What's the matter with you?
The Doctor ignores Amy and whips the sonic screwdriver around before popping it back into his inside left jacket pocket.
AMY: Doctor, are you okay? Should we be worried? I mean, when we were at Stonehenge…
The Doctor finally looks up to acknowledge Amy, patting one of the stones.
DOCTOR: Just checking. It's okay. These are good stones, magnificent stones.
AMY: Checking what? Are you expecting the stones to chase you around or something?
DOCTOR: Does that seem so ridiculous?
RORY: Well, yeah Doctor. They're stones. Big stones. Big stones weighing several tonnes. They may be big and heavy, Doctor, but they're not attack stones.
DOCTOR: You'd be surprised. While we were looking for part of the Key to Time, Romana and I ended up being chased by some of the Nine Travellers...
He looks down, sad.
AMY: How are you holding up?
DOCTOR: Uhh, well... Anyway, let's see who else is about and we'll come back to the circle in a bit.
The TARDIS shudders.
DOCTOR: Hmm, I'd better go check that out. You go on, I'll catch you up in a minute.
The Doctor heads into the TARDIS and Amy and Rory start walking towards the nearby stones outside of the circle.
RORY: He's really not doing well, is he?
AMY: She was the only other Time Lord still around. How would you feel?
The TARDIS stutters several times and starts to dematerialise. Amy and Rory turn back.
AMY: Doctor. Doctor!
The TARDIS completely dematerialises in front of them. Amy looks on furiously. Rory tries to remain calm.
RORY: Oh well, I expect he'll be back soon. Let's go see the sights.
[Track 3] As they move to lower ground beyond the clearing, they see three females and four males running out of a nearby wood. They are all tall and athletic. All wear leather with traditional wooden longbows in hand, a quiver and club on their backs and two or three bladed weapons at their hips and knees. They turn in formation when signalled by the lead runner.
AMY: What are they doing? There's nothing to hunt.
RORY: Maybe they can see something we can't.
The hunters turn sharply and head towards Amy and Rory.
AMY: Oh, my God.
Gunfire zips out of the trees towards the hunters.
RORY: They're not the hunters, they're the prey!
Rory looks for somewhere to hide or escape. He gestures towards the larger stones outside the circle.
RORY: There.
They run over to the masked hunters, the chasers still out of sight.
RORY: Follow us. We can get behind them and take them. Or escape.
All but one start to head towards the larger stones.
RORY: Come on, let's go!
REV: No. She will lead them away to buy our safety. She is wounded and they will be able to track her, whether she remains with us or not.
RORY: We can't just leave her!
REV: It is her duty to us. Now go! We will honour you and your sacrifice, sister.
VRELLA: For Tolvar! For peace!
With the rest of the party safe, Vrella fires arrows towards the woods as the large hunters emerge from it before leading them away. Vrella is shot dead.
REV: Sister! We will mourn!
RORY: Come on, now!
They run.
Scene 4: Celtic Site
The Celts arrive red-faced and puffing back at camp.
ANDRAVAR: By the Gods! What is this unrest?
FRAYSHARX: Strange beings from the skies! Giants. They have…strange weapons where their arms should be. They killed the others!
ANDRAVAR: All dead? I warned you of the mixed omens. You would not listen.
KANTAR: Always the omens with you! Can you never focus on the priorities?
Andravar sees something in the corner of his eye.
ANDRAVAR: Is that them? I know not dress of that sort.
Amy, Rory and the revolutionaries arrive, noticeably less out of breath than the Celts.
ANDRAVAR: These people are clearly more used to escaping trouble than looking for it.
KANTAR: Who are you sirs?
AMY: Excuse me? Hello! I think you'll find that a few of us are women.
FRAYSHARX: Forgive us, it is tradition among our people to greet the males of an unfamiliar group first. Kantar did not offer offence.
AMY: Good, then. I'm Amy and this is Rory. We've only just met these people.
REV: I am Rev of the Tolvarian Revolution. These are my kin. My sisters Fashih and Rin and my brothers Ulqarim, Rambir and Numed. Our sister Vrella fell earlier this day.
Andravar signals and waits for the other Celts to leave.
ANDRAVAR: Forgive me, I see you are not from these lands. We do not know your customs. How may we aid you in your grief?
REV: Thank you. We need a quiet place and fire. That is all. Afterwards we will rejoin you and speak of this day.
ANDRAVAR: We will prepare a meal and water. As we eat together you must tell us tales of your sister, that we too may remember and honour her.
Rev places a hand on Andravar's shoulder.
REV: Thank you. This day has brought us both loss and fortune.
ANDRAVAR: You may use my tent. Come to us when you are finished.
Andravar leaves quietly and the revolutionaries make for his tent. Amy and Rory hang back to talk privately.
AMY: What do we do?
RORY: I don't know. I don't want to intrude, maybe we should help this guy prepare.
Rev's hearing is sharp like any good hunter's.
REV: Our sister sacrificed herself as much for you as for us. You will join us, then we shall hunt the next morning.
Rev walks off.
Scene 5: Irish Plains
[Track 4] Between the Celtic camp to the east and the mountains and river to the west, the creatures pass Amy and Rory swords and other tools. They are joined by Fraysharx and Kantar.
RORY: I'm not sure I want to kill things.
AMY: Nor me really, sorry. We're not really cut out for this sort of thing.
RAMBIR: Anybody not born into the hunt rarely is, but it is necessary. It may save your lives one day. Our offspring were taught to be the best hunters in the universe, and now you are of our clan, you shall be taught too.
AMY: Yeah, but you know that Doctor we told you about...when he returns we'll be travelling with him.
RAMBIR: We understand this, Amy. But we must survive until then and much danger follows us. What of you two?
FRAYSHARX: I am content to learn your ways.
KANTAR: The practise will serve me well.
FASHIH: In a moment we will assess your knowledge, skills and fitness, but our first lesson is one of mercy. Do not hunt unnecessarily. Life is precious, even that of animals. Look for suitable prey, kill quickly to avoid suffering and keep waste to a minimum. There is a time and a place for sport and we will discuss this when you are proficient enough.
ULQARIM: Come, we need to make targets. (To Fraysharx and Kantar) We will need use of your tools to harvest wood and vine.
They set off eastwards at a strong pace. Suddenly the revolutionaries stand still, looking at the sky. Then Rory and Amy feel a vibration growing stronger and the beginnings of a feeling like being underwater.
REV: Oh, no. Run!
As they head towards the Celts' camp, there is a sonic boom that leaves Amy and Rory rubbing their ears as they try to follow the others. The air grows dark as a huge spaceship appears in the sky.
AMY: Look at that!
REV: There's no time! Keep running!
As they run, a series of smaller pulses sound and small patches of glowing light signal, followed by the appearance of seven other people, also running. They quickly fall into formation with the others.
RORY: We've got company!
Behind them, a large hunting party appears in separate flashes of light and sound. All around seven and a half feet tall, they are dressed in mechanical suits, but no cannons on their arms. Instead of hunting knives and bows they are armed with various types of guns bearing target beams and light-blades. Light glows from the eyes of their masks. The spaceship phases away.
RAMBIR: We won't make it to the camp.
REV: We must try!
Rev and the leader of the other hunted party make eye contact and signal. They split into two groups, one weaving left and the other right. In the confusion Rory and Amy continue straight.
AMY: Wait, we've lost them!
The chasers draw rifles and shoot glowing projectiles towards the runners. When they reach their targets glowing energy nets expand and glowing spikes thrust into the ground, anchoring and pulling the nets tight. Only Fraysharx, Kantar, Rambir and Numed escape.
ORTHODOX LEADER: Round the others up. We must join our comrades.
Scene 6: Stone Circle
The TARDIS materialises once more. The Doctor jumps out.
DOCTOR: Ah, thanks, old girl. What was all that about, eh? Now, where've Amy and Rory got to?
He looks around, spotting four humanoid figures running in the distance.
DOCTOR: Worth a look.
The Doctor unbuttons his jacket, straightens his bow tie and sets off at a good pace in the direction of the runners.
Scene 7: Celtic Site
Fraysharx, Kantar, Rambir and Numed arrive back at the camp.
ANDRAVAR: You anger the Gods! Now they arrive in a strange chariot in the sky to punish us. Will you not cease until we all are dead?
FRAYSHARX: People... walked out of the air and the strange ones hunting them captured our friends.
RAMBIR: More revolutionaries. And the Orthodox have found us.
ANDRAVAR: Is that one of them?
KANTAR: No, he is not one of them.
DOCTOR: I'm the Doctor, pleased to meet you... and you would be?
KANTAR: (gesturing with his hands) Andravar, Fraysharx and I am Kantar.
NUMED: I am Numed and this is Rambir, of the Tolvarian Revolutionaries.
DOCTOR: I need to find the Ponds, my friends.
FRAYSHARX: We were set upon not long ago. Your friends have been taken captive along with others.
A flash of darkness can be seen in The Doctor's eyes.
DOCTOR: Who by?
NUMED: The Tolvarian Orthodox.
[Track 5]
DOCTOR: I think you'd better tell me about them.
RAMBIR: A long time ago, we were a vast and powerful Empire.
Scene 8: Hedge Maze
Small beasts scamper away. A young Tolvarian, his armour bare, hides. Sensing his moment, the boy jumps out of the nearby vegetation and spears the beast.
NUMED (oc): We were proud hunters. Our offspring trained for years to be the best in the galaxy.
The Tolvarian looks up to the sky, holding the dead animal in its hand.
Scene 9: Throne Room
Three giant Tolvarian sit on thrones.
SAADAR: This one shows...promise. What is his name?
XAVIS: His name is Ptaral.
SAADAR: In the name of the Ancestors, he shall serve them well.
Pan out of the throne room slowly.
NUMED: But soon, that was all to come to an end.
Scene 10: Jungle
Panning out of the throne room, it is clear that there is a large war. Trees are on fire, there are lots of explosions and screams.
NUMED (oc): The truth became clear to us. Our gods, the Ancestors, who were true to be the Osirans, were not real. They lied to us, and used us.
Bullets fire across the woods, people impaling each other. Hundreds of corpses lay bloodied and dead as more hunters bound over them.
RAMBIR (oc): Our Elders claimed that they had a doorway to the realm of the Ancestors. We found the Osiran, and strangers helped us to unravel the truth that he used us just to escape from his prison. Those who learned the truth managed to tell us before they were all destroyed.
NUMED (oc): To our shame this was still not enough to stir us to overthrow our gods. Our true division came when some became truly cruel and callous, failing to honour those who fell during our hunts or in protecting our world. They punished children with energy whips for not learning fast enough to satisfy their greed and finally, the weakest of our children were sold into slavery.
Young Tolvarians scream as they watch the Orthodox storm through villages, slaughtering them all.
RAMBIR (oc): Even after this upheaval, the God-supporters called themselves the Orthodox. Our offspring and those who hadn't completed their training, joined those who chose technology over tradition.
Scene 11: Celtic Site
A tear rolls down Rambir's face.
RAMBIR: We had to defeat the Orthodox. My son...
NUMED: Retribution was swift. A dark matter ripper was used to defeat the uprising. Those few who avoided death or capture were forced to leave – the ripper destroyed Tolvar's ability to sustain life for millennia. Our attempt to find safety brought us here, but we failed to outrun our tormentors and have brought our war with us. We have been running for too long, now is the time to stand.
DOCTOR: I understand your loss. I am sorry Rambir, Numed. This ends now.
NUMED: Thank you, Doctor. I see that we are amongst kindred spirits. You have felt what we have, have you not-
[Track 6]
COMMANDER XANJU: Now!
The remainder of the Orthodox hunting party crashes into the camp, drawing their rifles. Rambir and Numed instantly rush towards the hunters with incredible speed and precision, pushing the rifles aside so that they are ineffective in such close quarters.
RAMBIR: Get back!
The Doctor pulls out the sonic screwdriver and permanently disables each rifle in turn. The Celts catch up, throwing themselves heartily at the hunters and wrestling them to the ground.
ANDRAVAR: Tie them up. Quickly.
Once their hands are tied behind them, the hunters are made to sit and their feet are also bound. The Doctor grabs a knife and holds it against Xanju's throat.
DOCTOR: I'm the Doctor. Where have you taken your captives?
COMMANDER XANJU: They will be in the hills to the west, between the river and the mountains.
The Doctor smiles and drops the knife..
KANTAR: There is a Roman camp there. The Roman forces are formidable, even more so in recent times. Perhaps they have aligned forces.
RAMBIR: The Orthodox are cunning and cruel. They may use the pretence of an alliance before subjugating these Romans you speak of.
Xanju laughs.
XANJU: Quite so. We will teach these Romans the meaning of formidable. (sarcastically) Good luck, Doctor.
KANTAR: Andravar and myself will lead you there and lend support. Together we will banish these beasts.
Scene 12: Roman Camp
[Track 7] The Doctor and the others climb up a steep hill. A large Roman camp sits atop the hill with a commanding view of the surrounding area. The ground has been mounded up on four sides, forming a perfect square with eight watchtowers for the camp to sit in. Rows of tents are laid out neatly in areas that serve different functions, with walkways between them.
ANDRAVAR: Many legionaries will be on foot elsewhere, establishing new camps and supply lines. The watchtowers are empty. We must assume that the Orthodox are already established here.
NUMED: Where will we find their tribe leader? Do you know of him?
KANTAR: There is the praetorium - the headquarters. We must assume the Praetorian and the Legate have gathered their forces near for protection, if they have not already succumbed.
Set away from the main area, Rambir spots Rory and Amy held together in an energy cage. The trapped Revolutionaries are in separate cages, clearly seen as threats.
CUT TO:
RORY: At least we'll be treated humanely by the Romans. They didn't beat or torture their prisoners. We'll be fed too.
AMY: Locked in a posh cage and then what? Be carted off somewhere and made to fight a gladiator?
RORY: We'll get a trial. More likely to end up as slaves though.
AMY: Ah, very humane then. Shame you didn't bring your Centurion uniform…
They cuddle up.
CUT TO:
The Doctor wants to free them immediately, but is held back gently by Numed and Rambir.
NUMED: Our kin are in danger too, Doctor. First we must observe and assess. We will wait while you find the captors. If necessary we will intervene here.
The Doctor, Fraysharx, Kantar and Andravar circle cautiously towards the rear of the praetorium, hearing people talking as they get nearer.
LEGATE QUIRINUS (oc): We must not take orders from these beings from the stars. We will be punished by the gods.
Scene 13: Inner Praetorium
Quirinus shakes his head disapprovingly.
PRAETOR JANUS: We may be able to make alliance with them.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: But they are neither human nor gods. Look at them!
PRAETOR JANUS: A strategic alliance could gain us permanent access to these "rifles". Maybe they have other advancements we can use to overthrow them when we are in position and the stars are right.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: We know not their motives. Look at their intentions for the prisoners. My gut tells me...
PRAETOR JANUS: You know me, my friend. I have not forgotten our childhood together. I would not easily turn aside your counsel. But we must decide now or we may lose the initiative.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Will we align ourselves for now and reassess when their character has been revealed. Be sure your men are prepared for the event of treachery.
PRAETOR JANUS: A temporary lowering of status may hurt our pride, but only in service of the glorious Empire of Rome.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Then we are agreed.
Scene 14: Roman Camp
[Track 8] Six Roman and six Orthodox soldiers approach the energy cages. They aim their weapons towards the prisoners as one of the Tolvarian soldiers presses a display on his rifle a few times. The cages disappear and the soldiers bind the prisoners' hands. Legate Quirinus strolls across from the praetorium.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: They appear to be clean enough, take them before the Praetor for sentencing.
The prisoners are led to the praetorium as the Doctor and the Celts rejoin the revolutionaries.
NUMED: We must prepare and await our moment to strike.
Scene 15: Inner Praetorium
The prisoners are led before the Praetor, who is accompanied by six praetorian guards and several Orthodox and Roman soldiers. The prisoners bow before being forced to kneel.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Have you anything to say before sentence is passed?
AMY: Well, it would be good to know what the charges are.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: It would serve no purpose. We have orders from 'above'.
Although Rory is aware that this refers to the Orthodox, he tries to split the two factions.
RORY: Wait, wait, wait! There is no 'above'. You are the Legate. (bowing his head) My Lord Praetor. There is no higher authority here.
Recognising Rory's respect, the Legate and Praetor briefly make eye contact with each other.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Things change. They have become more... complicated.
The Legate is about to offer further explanation but stays himself.
PRAETOR JANUS: You have been found to be enemies of the Tolvarian Orthodox. I sentence you to death.
AMY: Rory…?
RORY: Hang on, hang on, just hang on a minute. You don't execute prisoners...
LEGATE QUIRINUS: As I said, things change. Take them.
The Legate nods to the soldiers, who lead the prisoners away.
Scene 16: Execution Site
Once the prisoners are tied to wooden posts, the Orthodox soldiers pass rifles to the Roman soldiers. The rifles are more primitive than those carried by the Orthodox as standard. The Orthodox draw energy whips from their waists and crack them in readiness. Amy and Rory are terrified.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Cease this nonsense.
ORKAMT: They must bear the mark of our punishment before they are executed.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: I said CEASE. I will not say it a third time.
ORKAMT: Insolent dog!
The Romans and the Orthodox aim their weapons at each other as another Orthodox soldier strolls to them from the Praetorium, the laser cannons on his shoulders targeting the Romans.
COMMANDER CARYLS: STOP!
The Orthodox soldiers immediately lower their arm cannons and stand to attention.
COMMANDER CARYLS: Do we have a problem, Legate?
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Your soldiers dishonour us by their lack of discipline! Is it not enough that their lives are forfeit? Are we to resort to flogging them for petty entertainment?
COMMANDER CARYLS: Intriguing. We have very different ways. We will relent. (to the Orthodox soldiers) Leave.
The soldiers leave without looking at the others.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Thank you for your assistance, Commander.
Commander Caryls joins his men and speaks quietly so as not to be overheard.
COMMANDER CARYLS: These fools are too volatile to be malleable. Contact the Home Vessel and prepare for retrieval. Order them to cycle the dark matter ripper. We will punish their insolent tongues and take slaves to sell before we leave.
ORKAMT: Yes, sir!
Meanwhile, the Roman soldiers take a moment to familiarise themselves with their weapons.
AMY: Do we get a last request?
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Ready weapons.
The Romans raise their guns, about to fire.
AMY: I love you.
RORY: Me too.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Aim.
DOCTOR (oc): Ooh, I like your guns!
The Romans turn to see the Doctor approaching.
DOCTOR: Bit anachronistic, mind. Then again, I did travel to 400 BC in a police box from the 1960s. Get 'em off that lot, did you? Sorry, getting distracted. Leave my friends alone!
Hearing the newcomer, Commander Caryls and his soldiers rejoin the Legate.
COMMANDER CARYLS: Who are you, that you think you can tell us what to do?
DOCTOR: I'm the Doctor. And those are my friends.
COMMANDER CARYLS: Legate Quirinus, continue with the execution. We shall make sport of this Doctor afterwards. Let him see his friends die first.
The soldiers once again prepare to fire.
DOCTOR: Oh, didn't I mention? Those aren't my only friends.
[Track 9] The Celts and the revolutionaries, with the rest of the prisoners who they have now freed, arrive on either side of the Doctor ready for more combat, with the Praetor and his guards hot on their heels. The guards take up defensive positions around the Praetor with swords drawn, watching all directions. Andravar steps forward and waits for the Praetor to arrive before bowing.
ANDRAVAR: My Lord Praetor, my lord Legate. Your new companions intend to use you as slaves so they can wreak havoc on this planet and the universe. They intend there to be no enduring Empire of Rome, the declaration "civis romanus sum" will fall on deaf ears.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: How could the might of Rome fall?
ANDRAVAR: My Lords, permit my new friends to explain. My words and knowledge are inadequate.
The Praetor nods his assent. Rev steps forward and bows.
REV: My Lords, your new "allies", the Orthodox are waging a war against my people. They are priming a weapon many times more powerful than the ones your soldiers hold. They intend to destroy our changed society and shall be free to convert the whole Tolvarian empire back to the closed-minded way we once were. Now they are here, they will turn their attention to you. Once you are enslaved or destroyed their gaze will turn to the remainder of the universe.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: I do not believe these "Orthodox" have the numbers to subdue the mighty Roman Empire.
DOCTOR: They have travelled from the stars. Look at the weapons they bring, the body parts that help them to be precise in their kills. Haven't you wondered why they gave you less powerful weapons than their own?
COMMANDER CARYLS: Cease your prattling.
The sonic boom signalling the phasing of the spaceship sounds and once again the air grows dark. As the telltale sounds and light of teleport begin, the Revolutionaries leap into action to deal with the threat of the new Orthodox arrivals. The Roman soldiers raise their rifles but without orders stay in place.
COMMANDER CARYLS: These weapons are for you to dominate this planet. Kill them, Legate. Kill them all.
RORY: Legate, listen to me. I am a Centurion, like you. Trust me.
The Legate looks at Rory, and sighs.
COMMANDER CARYLS: He lies!
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Close your mouth, Commander. Centurions speak only the truth. Soldiers! Arise against treachery!
The Romans spring into action. The praetorian guard join the fight but remain close to their ward.
FRAYSHARX: This is what you get when you forsake your own people.
Commander Caryls raises his cannon arm.
COMMANDER CARYLS: These are not our people. They are a weakness that must be cleansed from the gene pool.
FRAYSHARX: Men are judged by how they treat their weakest. You are sorely lacking.
ANDRAVAR: Wise words, my friend.
The spaceship starts to become noticeably louder, its power building up in preparation.
COMMANDER CARYLS: We are superior to you. Don't believe that you will survive.
LEGATE QUIRINUS: Enough! I would never ignore the word of a Centurion. Free them.
Amy and Rory are freed.
COMMANDER CARYLS: You brought this upon us, Doctor. You shall die for this!
AMY: What's happening to that spaceship? It sounds like it's about to leave.
COMMANDER CARYLS: No, it's not leaving. Our dark matter ripper is powering up. We were discussing punishments with the Praetor earlier. He mentioned that sometimes it is necessary to cut ten percent of a legion because of desertion or mutiny. We thought the idea delightful, so we will begin by removing a tenth of this planet's population.
RORY: You can't, this is our planet. We are peaceful.
DOCTOR: It's okay, we'll stop it.
Realising the shared threat, the Celts, Revolutionaries and Romans circle the remainder of the Orthodox. The circle gets smaller and smaller as they advance and kill the Orthodox. Suddenly Fashih breaks formation and plunges a blade into Commander Caryls' neck. The Commander raises his hand to the wound but before he can speak he falls to the ground dead.
FASHIH: Our sister was forced to sacrifice herself. Recompense from her tormentors was required. A quick, merciful death. More than would have been afforded Vrella.
Rev faces the remainder of the Orthodox.
REV: Surrender now or share his fate.
The remaining Orthodox soldiers lower their weapon arms and kneel.
REV: Quickly, we must prevent the ripper from firing.
Ulqarim grabs Commander Caryls' arm and starts pressing the display panel.
ULQARIM: I will need help. We must be swift.
REV: Who will be Ulqarim's second?
Legate Quirinus grabs an additional rifle and steps forward without hesitation.
DOCTOR: Wait!
Before anything can be done, Ulqarim grabs the Legate's forearm and they phase away.
AMY: What's happening, Doctor?
REV: They have gone to disable the ripper.
DOCTOR: It's a one-way trip. Get down!
The spaceship implodes silently before a cacophony of sound and a shockwave explode out, knocking everyone off their feet. All except the Orthodox prisoners get to their feet. Shock or grief is clear on the faces of everyone assembled. [Track 10]
DOCTOR: Brave men. I'm sorry.
PRAETOR JANUS: Quirinus is...was my childhood friend. He always was brave, always the first to step into danger. We will miss him and honour him.
The Revolutionaries say nothing, instead throwing their heads back and roaring towards the sky. Seeing this, Amy, Rory, the Celts and the Legate's soldiers follow suit as the others look on. As the roar finishes, Rev looks around the group with tears in his eyes.
REV: Such compassion, such honour. Thank you, thank you all my friends.
Rambir places his hand on Rev's shoulder. He speaks quietly to all.
RAMBIR: We will hold ceremony when the moon is right. All will be welcome to join us in honouring our fallen.
ANDRAVAR: Let us prepare a feast to remember our losses and in celebration of new friends. Well, as much as our meagre foodstock will allow. We have plenty of mead though, which will warm the spirit.
PRAETOR JANUS: Come now! Allow us to provide the food. You are very welcome to bring that mead though! You must accept our hospitality.
REV: We shall, thank you.
Amy nods keenly.
RORY: We will.
DOCTOR: What will you do with the remainder of the Orthodox?
REV: Our planet is dead, our people scattered across the stars. If we are to survive we must reconcile. There are too few of us to do otherwise. Perhaps we may one day find a way off this planet and reunite with our people.
DOCTOR: We can help with a new home. How about we find you a nice little Level 2 planet?
REV: Is this possible? You have a spaceship large enough to carry us?
DOCTOR: Of course. You're sure you can bring your people together?
REV: A planet without technology... without such distractions and with no other choice but to begin anew. New bonds and bloodlines, a new community to build. (to the Orthodox) I believe we can reignite your passion for hunting in the manner of our earliest ancestors. Surely peace is the greatest trophy of all.
The Orthodox nod in agreement.
DOCTOR: Good on you. Now let's go sort that feast.
REV: Yes.
