Scene 1: Drylands
[Track 1: The Council Of the Time Lords] There are pastures of red grass underneath the millions of Dalek ships and corpses, with mountains forming the landscape under the burnt orange sky. Behind the mountains stand...
The Citadel of the Time Lords. As time passes quickly, the ruins of the Time War fade away. Time now starts to pass normally, a huge statue of the Great Lord Rassilon glitches into existence, towering over the Drylands. A fiery coloured beam of light shines down from the sky, and three figures appear, looking up at it.
QU'LA (oc): It is rebuilt. They will stand again.
They all kneel before the statue, as it glows a yellow shade, similar to the beam of energy. [Track 1 ends]
Scene 2: Space
The TARDIS drifts.
Scene 3: TARDIS
[Track 2: Melody Malone 0:00 -1:23] The Doctor is munching on a packet of mini-cheddars, crumbs falling out of his mouth, sitting on the stairs, whilst Amy and Rory are sitting comfortably on the chairs, deep into the pages of their books. Some lights flash on the console, and catches Rory's attention.
RORY: Uh...Is the console meant to be doing that?
The Doctor jumps up, tilts his head at the console and walks over to it.
DOCTOR: What's that? That's never happened before. At least, I don't think it has-
The lights shut off. Amy and Rory put down their books frustratedly.
AMY: Doctor?
DOCTOR: Yeah, yeah. I know. Nothing's responding. Total shutdown. Perhaps there's something tampering with it…
The Doctor crawls under the console.
RORY: What can I do?
DOCTOR: Look after my mini-cheddars. You never know when you might need a mini-cheddar.
The Doctor starts to fiddle with the machinery under the console. Rory stares at the mini-cheddars.
AMY: Can you see anything?
Rory slowly takes a mini-cheddar from the packet.
DOCTOR: I think there's a loose wire here-
The console gives a brief, high pitched whine before a bang, messing with Amy's hair.
DOCTOR: Never mind, I pulled it loose.
Amy rolls her eyes.
RORY: Doctor, there's a code on the side of these lights.
DOCTOR: What code?
RORY: IX-B13.
DOCTOR: Hang on.
The Doctor climbs up from under the console and presents the sonic goofily, wiring it into the TARDIS.
DOCTOR: It'll give us a bit of temporary power, we can identify the code.
The sonic whirrs away, and the TARDIS lights up dimly. They hurry over to the keyboard and the scanner and type something in.
DOCTOR: Proximity detectors...
RORY: Proximity to what, though?
DOCTOR: I'm picking up an abnormal mass.
The TARDIS dies down once again, and the Doctor removed the sonic, which has a faint smoke trail coming from it.
DOCTOR: Burnt out. It'll take a while to recharge. For the meantime, let's go the old fashioned route.
The Doctor opens the wooden doors to the vacuum of space.
AMY: Nothing there…
DOCTOR: I got that, thanks.
The Doctor turns to the console.
DOCTOR: What don't you want us to see? What's there?
The TARDIS tries to pull a lever by itself, but the brakes hold it in place.
DOCTOR: You really want to leave, don't you? What's so bad about this place, eh? What's got you rumbled?
The Doctor darts back and presses a few buttons on the console. The TARDIS rumbles.
DOCTOR: That should stop you from misbehaving.
The TARDIS shoots out three grey spheres, attaching themselves to the Doctor, Amy and Rory. The spheres spread out to make a layer of fiber surrounding them, and a mask to see through.
DOCTOR: Then again...
RORY: Uh, what…? What?
DOCTOR: What's this for? What are you up to?
AMY: I can't take it it off.
DOCTOR: It's an impact suit. Why do we need these?
RORY: Can we get these off?
DOCTOR: Easily! Well, not easily, but not with difficulty. Well, some difficulty, but not a lot.
AMY: How?
DOCTOR: There's an electromagnetic charge on here, I just need to deactivate it. I'll need a few things. One-
The TARDIS is thrown on its side, and the three are chucked out. [Track 2 ends]
Scene 4: Space
They watch as the TARDIS starts to spiral out of control, as a loud ringing fills their ears. Flames start to cover the suit. Suddenly everything starts to go numb for the Doctor, and he blacks out.
CUT TO BLACK:
Scene 5: Mountaintop
The Doctor is awoken by Rory under a burnt orange sky.
DOCTOR: Eh? Oh...the TARDIS?
AMY: Dunno. But we've got worse. From the descriptions, you're not going to like what planet we're on…
The Doctor gets up and looks out.
DOCTOR: No…
It's Gallifrey.
ROLL TITLES
Scene 6: Corridor
They walk along.
RORY: What will happen now?
DOCTOR: I don't know. I don't want to know. There are worse acts than committing genocide. I didn't realise that until now.
A tear rolls down the Doctor's face.
FADE TO WHITE:
Scene 7: Mountaintop
[Track 3: The Beast Below 0:00 - 0:49] Flashback to the mountaintop. The Doctor grimaces at the sight of the Citadel, whilst his friends are gaping.
AMY: Doctor, how are we on Gallifrey?
DOCTOR: We're not. This isn't Gallifrey.
RORY: But the way you've described it-
DOCTOR: It looks like it, it isn't it. It can't be.
RORY: But-
DOCTOR: I can tell what my home is like, and this isn't it!
The Doctor storms off, heading down the mountaintop towards a forest.
AMY: Doctor! Wait up!
Amy and Rory jog after him. Something is watching them, and it sneaks away, and turns on a device.
R'TEI (oc): It is not as we predicted. The trap has ensnared them, but has not fooled.
QU'LA (oc): Then we must. Procure the machine.
R'TEI (oc): As you will me.
The mysterious figure starts to hobble away towards the Citadel, where the three were standing to watch over it.
Scene 8: Forest
Amy and Rory catch up to the Doctor.
RORY: I don't get it. What's wrong with Gallifrey returning?
DOCTOR: It couldn't be worse. The Time Lords Of Old, perhaps it would be. But the Time War changed them. War changes everyone. They became the most corrupt beings in existence. That's why I had to do it. Why I had to wipe them out.
AMY: So how can we be here?
DOCTOR: We're not. This is a fake, a copy. There were clones of the planet Gallifrey, but they were all destroyed. We can't be on one of those. Someone's playing some kind of sick game, and I intend to reach the endgame. I intend to win.
The Doctor walks on, whilst Amy and Rory lag behind.
AMY: I don't like this.
RORY: Me neither.
AMY: No matter what's going on here, we're going to get the Doctor off this planet and back to the TARDIS.
RORY: If we can get back to the TARDIS.
AMY: We will. Of course we will. Just make sure that the Doctor doesn't plot any vengeful ideas.
RORY: Right.
DOCTOR (oc): Move it, come on!
[Track 3 ends] Amy and Rory run over to the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Hang on, where's the River Lethe?
RORY: You might be mistaken. It might be down that way.
DOCTOR: No, it's definitely here...
There is a bright light shining in their faces. As the light subsides, a river flows.
DOCTOR: But...where did that come from?
AMY: Why are we at this river?
DOCTOR: This should take us along to the Citadel. If I remember correctly, the real Gallifrey had a boat here. It belonged to this old hermit who lived under this tree behind my home- My first home, anyway. He was a nice bloke. He's... gone now, though. Not everyone on Gallifrey was as corrupt as Rassilon. Some didn't deserve it. Not him. Never him. Uh- If we go walking for a bit, we should find it. Down there, see? On that dock. It's fallen out of disrepair, but I can fix it.
They run over to a small dock and climb onto a medium-sized boat.
CUT TO:
Scene 9: Boat Deck
The Doctor starts to fiddle with some wires.
DOCTOR: This way we'll get to the Citadel in a few hours. If we went on foot, we'd get there by nightfall. You should get some sleep, I think there's a bed downstairs.
AMY: You sure?
DOCTOR: Yeah, just go.
Amy and Rory open a door and go downstairs.
Scene 10: Boat Hull
[Track 4: Holding Hands] They walk into a small, cramped room with a bed.
RORY: It'll do for now, I guess. Come on.
The boat starts to move. They are quiet for a bit.
RORY: Sounds like that the boat is working.
Rory sits on the bed, as the tense silence rises.
RORY: Pretty planet, huh?
AMY: I feel that we should talk to him.
RORY: Oh, come on, Amy. Just relax for a bit. I'm sure he just needs some alone time.
AMY: Just imagine how the Doctor feels. He's standing on the planet that he burnt. He is the only one who lived here who is still alive. The whole planet is empty.
RORY: I know.
AMY: Come on, we'd best go up and make sure he's okay.
RORY: It's fine, I'll do it. You do as the Doctor says, get some sleep.
Rory gets up and walks upstairs whilst Amy collapses on the bed.
Scene 11: Boat Deck
The Doctor presses some buttons as Rory climbs onto the deck.
RORY: Hiya.
DOCTOR: Did Amy send you?
RORY: What? No, just come up here to keep you company.
DOCTOR: Thanks.
Neither of them say anything for a bit, they just listen to the settling waves.
DOCTOR: How do you feel, Rory?
RORY: Huh? How do you mean?
DOCTOR: When you're travelling with me. Sometimes I look in your eyes and I see a thought. That you're just Amy's husband. You're only travelling with me because of her.
RORY: Uh, I mean-I guess it started out that way, but-
DOCTOR: No, it didn't. I've always seen you as a friend, we've got more in common than just Amy.
RORY: Maybe, yeah. But what?
DOCTOR: Well, all the stuff we've seen. We've done that together.
RORY: If we're close friends, can I ask...did you have family? It's probably an inappropriate time, but did you?
DOCTOR: ...Everyone has families.
RORY: Married? Children?
DOCTOR: In human terms, yes. Time Lords don't really have small human practices like marriage. But I had a family. And they were happy, but it wasn't enough for us. There was so much to see beyond that sky. Unfortunately, after I left Gallifrey, all I had with me was my granddaughter. But eventually I lost her too. For her benefit. She was happy.
RORY: You had a granddaughter?
DOCTOR: I'm older than I look.
RORY: So, what is childhood like?
DOCTOR: Well, growing up, it was...it was amazing. Pure freedom. Playing on the mountains of the Shining World of the Seven Systems. Until the Academy.
[Track 4 ends] The Doctor looks at the Citadel.
DOCTOR: That's when childhood ended and you became a Time Lord. A life to serve and protect the web of time. That's when I left. I got bored of it. Glad to be home, though.
They continue to talk with each other as the boat continues down the river.
CUT TO:
It is getting darker, and the two suns are setting. The boat is close to the Citadel. The Doctor is now the only one on the deck.
DOCTOR: How can you be back? More importantly, why are you back?
Something scuttles towards the Doctor. It is a small, metallic, crab-like robot.
DOCTOR: Hello, what are you?
The Doctor picks it up.
DOCTOR: I'd say that this is some nanotech remote. What are you doing…
As the boat moves under the cover of the trees, the Doctor sees the statue of Rassilon towering over him, very close to the river.
DOCTOR: Here…?
The Doctor takes out the sonic.
DOCTOR: Broken. Of course. Why don't I make a spare? Thoughts for later.
The Doctor pulls the handbrake and the boat slows down. He runs over to the door leading to downstairs and knocks on the door.
DOCTOR: Just going to check something out, won't be long!
The Doctor climbs into the water and swims to the bank. He shakes off the water and heads towards the statue.
Scene 12: Boat Hull
[Track 5: Trust Me] Amy wakes up. It is now night.
AMY: Hmm? Rory?
RORY: Uh? What is it?
AMY: It's dark.
RORY: Yeah, so?
AMY: The Doctor said we'd make it to the Citadel before then. So where is he?
RORY: Well, we've stopped moving. Perhaps he's waiting for us to wake up.
AMY: I don't like this.
Amy gets up, as does Rory.
Scene 13: Boat Deck
They emerge onto the empty deck.
AMY: Doctor?
They see the big Rassilon statue, glowing yellow.
AMY: Oh no, Rory. Please don't tell me he's gone to see that.
RORY: We'd better go after him. Stay here.
Rory jumps into the water, wading through it. Amy picks up the crab-like remote.
Scene 14: Statue Base
Rory runs towards the statue, deep in its shadow.
RORY: Doctor?!
Rory finds a vial with some of the stone from the statue inside.
RORY: This isn't good. At all.
AMY: Rory!
Amy is running over, soaking wet.
RORY: I told you to stay there.
AMY: You're not getting rid of me that easy. Where's…
She sees the vial.
RORY: It might not be his.
AMY: We're the only people on this planet, Rory. Who else could it belong to?
Amy picks it up.
AMY: Where did he go?
Amy inspects the statue, and notices where the Doctor had taken his samples. Amy sees that the shape of the statue is moving very slightly.
AMY: Rory, look at this.
Amy touches the statue.
AMY: It's like the statue is moving.
A gap opens in the statue, leading to a dark corridor inside. Hesitantly, they step towards it.
Scene 15: Corridor
They look around as the entrance reforms as rock.
AMY: Doctor? Are you there?
RORY: This really isn't good. This is worse than not good.
AMY: Stop saying that. What do you think happened to him?
RORY: Whatever happened, we shouldn't wait to find out.
Rory leads Amy down the corridor. A CCTV camera is inactive, but hidden away in the corner of the room.
Scene 16: Main Hub
The Doctor wakes up, strapped to the wall. Three tall figures in large white cloaks surround him.
QU'LA: He wakes! Hail!
They bow before the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Uh...Hi. Any reason why I'm tied up?
QU'LA: We wish to know your power.
DOCTOR: Power? I don't have any power.
R'TEI: But you are one of the Great Ones. We foresaw.
DOCTOR: The Great One? Eight-legged creature? Power-hungry?
AK'HEI: We do not pray to the Eight Legs. Your vanquished foe is nothing compared to the might of the Time Lords.
Amy and Rory sneak in.
DOCTOR: What about the Time Lords?
AK'HEI: They are gods in contrast to us.
DOCTOR: They're not gods. If anything, they're Satan, they're Abaddon, Beelzebub. The Time Lords are the last people you want to be your deities.
[Track 5 ends]
AMY (whispering): I can't see anything.
RORY (whispering): Shush...
QU'LA: We shall see.
DOCTOR: See? How?
QU'LA: Our psychic fabrication machine shall lift your recent memories of the Time Lords and make them real.
DOCTOR: ...No. You're going to revive the Time Lords?
AK'HEI: All hail the Time Lords!
The Doctor hears chants and cheers blaring from the speakers.
DOCTOR: Who else is listening in?
They lower their hoods to reveal a long face, with grey fur, and a white stripe splitting through that grey fur. Their ears are pointed, similar to that of a cat's.
QU'LA: Our people! The Ozhman! They await the Arrival!
R'TEI: Hail the Arrival! All hail the-
DOCTOR: Time Lords, yes, I get it. But why though? Why celebrate them? What's so great about the Time Lords?
QU'LA: They control our existence. Space and Time, theirs to manipulate.
DOCTOR: No-one should have that power. Sworn never to interfere, maybe, but promises are broken.
QU'LA: We shall help them.
The Doctor laughs. [Track 6: The Salvation of Kahler-Jex]
DOCTOR: Are you serious? You think that you can change the Time Lords? After what they became, really?
QU'LA: Yes. Reconfigure the device. A Time Lord was all we needed. That's why Gallifrey was prepared.
DOCTOR: Wait, you mean…
QU'LA: Correct. This is not Gallifrey.
DOCTOR: I knew it. Where are we, then?
QU'LA: A simulation. Your memories of Gallifrey formed this planet.
DOCTOR: This statue is a broadcasting station, powered by nanotechnology, with remotes all around the simulation to keep it in place. Oh, very clever. A mystery to draw me in, then I'm on my home planet, I have to investigate.
R'TEI: Your memories of them are strong, we can feed off them, we can make them real again.
AK'HEI: The psychic fabrication machine is ready.
DOCTOR: Trust me, you don't want to do this.
QU'LA: Why would you not bring back your species? You told us that not everyone on Gallifrey deserved to die.
DOCTOR: But those who shouldn't have died, you're not bringing them back. You just want the corrupt, the amoral, the decadent! Why should you decide who lives or dies on Gallifrey?
R'TEI: Why should you? The Outcasts were weak. They do not deserve the status of God.
QU'LA: Activate the device.
The controls start to whirr, and a circlular device shoots a yellow beam into the Doctor's head. He screams in pain.
AMY: We've got to stop them.
The Time Lords start to appear on Gallifrey, dressed in war armour and equipped with weapons. The crowds roar with praise. Amy finds something in her pockets.
AMY: I've got an idea.
Amy takes out the nanotech remote and presses a few buttons.
AMY: Let's see what this does…
The nanobots all start to shift, and the room starts to collapse. The beam stops, and the Doctor pants.
QU'LA: What have you done?
DOCTOR: Nothing, I've...I've done nothing.
R'TEI: There's been a fault in the simulation projectors.
AMY: You mean this thing?
Amy and Rory get up.
R'TEI: You! Give me that device!
AMY: Nuh-uh. Not until you let the Doctor go.
R'TEI: He will strengthen our faith.
AMY: You want stronger memories? I'll give you them, just let him go.
Ak'hei works at the controls.
AK'HEI: The nanobots have failed, I cannot check your credibility.
QU'LA: Why would you help us?
AMY: Because I agree with you. The Time Lords didn't deserve to die.
They look at each other, and Qu'la nods. R'Tei grabs Amy and straps her in, letting the Doctor go.
RORY (whispering): What is she doing?
DOCTOR (whispering): The worst thing I'll ever let her do.
AK'HEI: The controls are able to power the psychic fabrication machine. You haven't damaged that.
The beam shoots into Amy. Suddenly, the controls spark, and the Time Lords turn into hairy, red, devilish monsters.
QU'LA: What are they? What are they?!
DOCTOR: The Time Lords. The true Time Lords. I tried to remember them as they were, but eventually, they would've turned into that.
AK'HEI: We...We can't rescuscitate them! We can't!
QU'LA: D-d-d-destroy them! Switch it o-off!
They switch off the machine, and the beam stops. They tremble at the Doctor.
R'TEI: How could that be the Time Lords? It wasn't!
DOCTOR: That's what the Time War made them into. Monsters.
AK'HEI: Our faith is gone...what else have we to strive for?
They all kneel to the floor. The Doctor rests his hands on their shoulders.
DOCTOR: I'm...I'm so sorry.
The travellers walk out as the Ozhman breathe heavily, their bodies shaking from the revelation. A few Ozhman are curled up in a ball, trying to forget. But they never will. Cries in anguish come out from the speaker. [Track 6 ends]
Scene 17: Corridor
[Track 7: The Course Of My Life] The three walk along.
RORY: Did you know what would happen?
DOCTOR: Of course I did. Amy's never met the Time Lords, just what I've told her. So the machine fixated on how she thought they were like.
RORY: What will happen now? To the Ozhman?
DOCTOR: I don't know. I don't want to know. There are worse acts than committing genocide. I didn't realise that until now.
A tear rolls down the Doctor's face. Amy hugs the Doctor. They walk on.
RORY: How are we supposed to get back to the TARDIS?
Qu'la steps in front of them.
QU'LA: You don't.
Qu'la raises a gun. The Doctor pushes Amy and Rory behind him.
DOCTOR: Come on, now,
QU'LA: You've ruined our purpose for existence. The Time Lords cannot be allowed to live. And that must mean you must die.
AMY: I'm sorry, I really am. I know that you have lost all hope and faith in your gods. That is never a good thing. But life and death, it's not ours to control. It's too much for us.
Qu'la hesitates.
QU'LA: No, this is trickery.
DOCTOR: Could you do it? Your first murder? It only gets easier after that and then we become like the Time Lords. Trust me, I fought and killed. But people like us, who've been tormented and sent through hell, we have to live on, carry our legacy and teach others the correct path.
Qu'la pauses, and then breaks down into tears, dropping the gun. Rory picks it up and throws it away.
QU'LA: How can I continue on from this? How can any of us?
DOCTOR: The same way I did. Find people who restore your faith in the universe. My friends are always capable of that...Well, most of the time, anyway.
RORY: Where's the way out? Please tell us.
QU'LA: It's...go right, then there's a cupboard at the end. Your TT Capsule is there.
Qu'la stands aside.
AMY: Thank you.
They walk past Qu'la.
Scene 18: Main Hub
Qu'la walks back in.
QU'LA: We must return to the Homeworld. We shall learn and recuperate from our mistakes there.
R'Tei and Ak'Hei nod in agreement. Qu'la switches on the microphone.
QU'LA: This is a dark day for our species. However, through the smoke and the ruins lie stepping stones to our future, and only together can we work towards new beginnings.
The three stand in a circle and kneel on the floor.
QU'LA: Nothing lasts forever. But what ends makes paths for new things.
They look to each other. [Track 7 ends]
Scene 19: Drylands
The statue stops glowing, and everything starts to pixelate and go dark.
Scene 20: Space
[Track 8: A Secret He Will Take To The Grave] The TARDIS flies away.
Scene 21: TARDIS
The Doctor flicks a few switches.
DOCTOR: I'm not getting any other traces of the simulation. The TARDIS detected Gallifrey but was conflicted about its existence, so shook us out to stop going there. The Ozhman must've used some teleport beam to get us there.
AMY: How could you have let me do that? I ruined their lives.
DOCTOR: No...no, you didn't. You've saved them. Do you know how many families and planets were lost because of the Time War? You stopped them from reigniting the pain and loss and fear and anger that surrounded us.
AMY: At what cost?
DOCTOR: It's the start of a new chapter in their lives. The Time Lords had no right to be gods, and you fixed that. Now they'll work out something worthwhile to live for. Now you two, bed.
RORY: We just slept earlier.
DOCTOR: Well, go and do something. Go on, go.
RORY: Fine.
Rory leads Amy out. The Doctor types something into the console and an image of Gallifrey appears on the scanner. He smiles at it fondly. He closes his eyes.
Scene 22: Mountain
It's Gallifrey again - the early days. The two suns are setting in the distance. A child runs up. The floor is grey and lifeless. The child shivers from the cold.
EIGHTH DOCTOR (oc): A meteor storm, the sky above us was dancing with lights! Purple, green, brilliant yellow...!
TENTH DOCTOR (oc): The sky's a burnt orange, with the Citadel enclosed in a mighty glass dome, shining under the twin suns. Beyond that, the mountains go on forever. Slopes of deep red grass, capped with snow...
The child sees a monk and runs to it. He wears a brown gown with a hood, his face obscured. He is rather tall. The monk looks up - the child is now the Doctor. The monk points to a daisy in the rocks.
DOCTOR: I'm sorry. You helped me on my darkest day and now...I've let you down.
The monk has no reaction.
DOCTOR: You learned the secret of life. To see colour to everything but now...All I can see is bloodshed and warfare. I don't know what to do.
The monk looks to the daisy.
DOCTOR: What, the daisy?
The daisy burns. The Doctor falls to the ground to pick up the ashes.
DOCTOR: No...
A raspy voice emanates from under the monk's hood.
MONK: Just because it is gone, it does not mean the secret of life is gone. The meaning is still there, you just have to find it.
DOCTOR: The secret of life is colour, though. There's so much in this universe, I think I take it for granted.
MONK: It is not colour, it has never been colour and you know that.
DOCTOR: Then what was it?
MONK: Experience. That daisy gave you an experience you never knew and you understood the value of the universe.
DOCTOR: Yes. If there's one experience I can truly believe in, it's Amy and Rory's. Their eyes are still young, they still love this universe.
MONK: Experience the universe from their eyes.
DOCTOR: Yes. Thank you.
Tears are in the Doctor's eyes, but as he turns, he sees the colour of the planet once again. He turns back to the monk.
DOCTOR: I shall miss you.
The monk fades away, and the Doctor starts to walk back down the mountain. [Track 8 ends]
