Scene 1: Atlantic Ocean
[Track 1: You're a Dead Man 0:00 - 0:51] It is dark and foggy. The water is calm. Suddenly, a large, old-fashioned ship looms overhead. On its back is the word - Bucentaure.
Scene 2: Bucentaure Deck
A short man in a blue and white Navy uniform and a big hat stands on the deck, looking out into the mist. A few sailors work behind him, loading the cannons and mopping the wood. Something breaks through the cloudline, smashing into the distant water, emitting a green colour. It attracts the attention of a few other sailors, and they all nod in agreement, not saying a word. The short man runs towards the wheel, and points in the direction of the mysterious light.
FR SAILOR: Yes, Admiral Villeneuve.
The ship starts to cut through the water.
CUT TO:
Scene 3: TARDIS
The Doctor thrusts a lever forward.
DOCTOR: Landed?
AMY: And where are we?
DOCTOR: I told you - the past! There's an alien interference here. It seems that this interference is jamming the scanner though. Best go take a look.
The Doctor leads Amy and Rory out the TARDIS doors.
Scene 4: Victory Powder Room
There are young children stacking gunpowder bags and lifting cannonballs, passing them to the sailors, dressed in the English Navy uniform. The sailors aim their pistols at the Doctor.
DOCTOR: Oh! You've got guns. How welcoming.
The Doctor smiles awkwardly. [Track 1 ends]
ROLL TITLES
Scene 5: Atlantic Ocean
The boat sails through the murky water of blood and wood and fire.
Scene 6: Victory Powder Room
[Track 2: All For One 2:09 - 3:50] There is a loud bang! The ship rocks from side to side. The soldiers fall to the floor and get back up.
ENG SAILOR: Where the hell did you come from?
DOCTOR: Uh, we-
ENG SAILOR: Take them upstairs! Admiral Nelson will deal with them when we're done here.
DOCTOR: Admiral Nelson?
A few sailors grab the Doctor, Amy and Rory and throw them upstairs.
Scene 7: Victory Quarter Deck
The seas are choppy. Cannonballs are shot from a neighbouring ship. The French and Spanish ships are in a line, whilst the English are retreating.
DOCTOR: Ooh, they don't seem too happy!
RORY: I won't be if we don't get away from here quickly!
ENG SAILOR: Sir!
Someone turns round.
NELSON: What is it? Who are they?
ENG SAILOR: Stowaways, Admiral.
NELSON: What? Don't be ridiculous! First the Spanish, now these people?
DOCTOR: Spanish? What's up with the Spanish?
NELSON: Take a look for yourself!
The Doctor runs over to a telescope.
DOCTOR: This isn't right…
The Doctor checks his watch.
DOCTOR: Very wrong.
AMY: What is it?
DOCTOR: That ship. It's technology is far too advanced for this age, this is not good…
NELSON: They're catching up, now's our only chance to attack.
DOCTOR: What?! Are you insane?! You wouldn't last a minute against something like that!
NELSON: What choice do we have?
An explosion is heard in the distant, a bright green glow is seen coming towards the ship.
DOCTOR: Everybody brace!
The projectile hits the stern of the boat sending 2 of the sailors into the water.
NELSON: No!
Nelson runs to the side of the ship, peering over, but the Doctor holds him back.
DOCTOR: It's too late! Nothing could've survived that!
NELSON: And what is "that" exactly?
DOCTOR: This technology is not of this world… it's alien.
They must've salvaged that technology from a crashed spaceship. Cannons are no match against it!
Another blast causes them to fall to the floor. They help each other up.
NELSON: I don't understand...You're telling me that...the Spanish and French empires have allied themselves with beings from the heavens?
DOCTOR: Exactly. You don't stand a chance, you've got to retreat.
NELSON: So what do we do after that?
DOCTOR: We keep going as fast as we can until I think of something.
NELSON: That's what we've being doing before. We can't keep going like this. We fight like brave men or we die like cowards.
DOCTOR: Admiral, you have no choice but to trust me.
NELSON: We have plenty of choice - We don't know who you are!
DOCTOR: Admiral, it's now or never!
RORY: Just listen to him, for god's sake!
Nelson looks at the Doctor with a concerned expression.
NELSON: FULL SHEETS! Full sheets, lads!
ENG SAILOR: But Admiral, full sails in this wind is mad! We'll surely capsize!
NELSON: We have no other choice son, now get to it!
The Doctor face grows serious. He straightens his bowtie and proceeds to the main chambers, followed by Nelson and a few others. [Track 2 ends]
Scene 8: Captain's Chambers
[Track 3: Blood Ritual] As they enter the room they see a figure glancing out the rear window.
DOCTOR: Hello! I'm the Doc-
One of the sailors slaps the Doctor in the back of the head
ENG SAILOR: You will speak when spoken to!
DOCTOR: Ow! Alright, no need to be so...physical.
RORY: You had it coming.
NELSON: Leave us, the men will be needing you on deck.
ENG SAILOR: Aye, sir.
Both sailors leave the room shutting the door behind them.
NELSON: Now then, you can do me the pleasure of describing how you managed to sneak aboard my vessel?
DOCTOR: Ah yes, bit complicated, my radar was picking up some strange extraterrestrial technology readings and I'm doing it again, aren't I?
RORY: Yeah.
NELSON: Extraterrestrial what? What language are you speaking, fool?
DOCTOR: Um, might I just confirm - This is the HMS Victory, correct? Fella downstairs, he said that you were-
NELSON: Admiral Horatio Nelson. And you might be?
DOCTOR: Oh yes, sorry, where are my manners? I'm the Doctor and this is Amy and Rory.
NELSON: A Doctor, eh? You could come into some use at this time. Even if you are a spy.
DOCTOR: Why's that?
NELSON: You understand the tensions between the British and Franco-Spanish empires? We had them stuck of then coast of Cadiź, but they managed to escape. We went after them, but suddenly they overpowered us. Normally we would be able to be rid of them easily, our ships are far superior and faster than theirs, but their new-found weaponry is not like anything I've seen.
DOCTOR: Believe me, no one is meant to have this technology. At least not in this age.
NELSON: And how do you suppose we eliminate them?
DOCTOR: Eliminate? No, no, elimination is not my style, I prefer a civilised debate over a cuppa and a jammy dodger, mmm jammie dodgers.
NELSON: A debate with a the Spanish is mad. They don't speak our language.
DOCTOR: Oh, that won't be an issue. My telepathic circuits- I mean, I have a special machine that'll fix that.
NELSON: This plan is insane, how on earth will we stop them from shooting at us?
DOCTOR: Ah, you leave that to me.
The Doctor reaches into his pocket and pulls out a large white flag.
RORY: How the hell did that fit in there?
DOCTOR: Really Rory? Admiral Nelson, HMS Victory, alien advanced vessel, get in the moment.
NELSON: So you're suggesting we surrender?
DOCTOR: Not so much surrender, more like…cooling the moment.
AMY: Please never say that again.
NELSON: No, this is absurd. I won't surrender to such savages. I won't let the Victory be dishonored in such a way.
DOCTOR: Well Admiral, if you don't do this then there might not be an HMS Victory tomorrow so which will it be?
A haunting silence cloaks the deck as the tension rises.
NELSON: Fine. But if this all goes south, I'll make sure you're the first one to perish.
DOCTOR: Thanks, very reassuring.
NELSON: Right then, to the decks. I need to inform the men.
The Doctor, Nelson, Amy and Rory make their way towards the decks.
Scene 9: Victory Quarter Deck
They walk along hurriedly.
AMY: So, how is this going to work again?
DOCTOR: Basically we're gonna request a parlay with the Spanish lads in order to get ourselves on to their ship where Nelson will discuss a surrender while I scan around and find a way to disable their tech so Nelson's crew can take over the ship and we can all have a cuppa and a biscuit.
RORY: And what's the chances of that working?
DOCTOR: Oh I'm sorry, have you got a better plan?
RORY: Well maybe if you give me enough time to thi-
DOCTOR: Right let's get to it then.
Nelson strides up the wheel.
NELSON: Furl the sails, lads! Weigh the anchor!
SAILOR: But Captain, the Spanish will catch us; are you mad?
NELSON: No, but the Doctor sure is. But it's the best plan we've got.
DOCTOR: Oh, thanks.
NELSON: If it fails, I'll make sure he dies by my blade.
DOCTOR: Not so thanks.
The ship comes to a halt. One of the ships turns and heads towards them.
NELSON: Hoist the white flag, we're initiating a surrender.
The crew stand in line wearing the expressions of fear and anxiety. Nelson paces parallel to them as he figures tactics. The gunfire stops, yet the boat keeps approaching.
RORY: You were right - they're coming towards us.
AMY: They're not stopping - are they going to ram into us?
DOCTOR: Everyone...everyone, hold onto something!
NELSON: Doctor, we've got to-
DOCTOR: It's a test of loyalty! I know exactly who they are now! If they deem us to be lying, they'll kill us all! Prove to them that we're not going to hurt them! Drop your weapons in a pile and walk away!
NELSON: Are you sure?
DOCTOR: It's the creed of the Ro!
The Bucentaure doesn't decelerate. All the workers step away from the cannons and drop their pistols. Still, the Bucentaure moves towards the ship.
RORY: They're not stopping.
DOCTOR: I need a flare.
NELSON: A what?
DOCTOR: A flare, a firework, or something.
RORY: We're at sea, where are we supposed to find a firework?
AMY: The cannons!
The Doctor runs to one of the cannons and points it to the sky.
DOCTOR: I'm sorry.
The Doctor activates the sonic and throws it into the cannon. He lights the rope.
DOCTOR: Everyone down!
The cannonball fires into the sky, exploding in a green haze, with a loud sonic boom accompanying it. The Doctor looks sad.
DOCTOR: Aw.
The enemy ship slows down.
AMY: It's worked! They've stopped.
DOCTOR: They recognise the superior technology.
French naval soldiers climb aboard, armed.
DOCTOR: Hi! May I speak to the Ro please?
The French look at each other.
FR SAILOR: You. Come this way. The others will stay here.
DOCTOR: If you promise to not hurt them.
FR SAILOR: We have the advantage here, not you-
The sailor stops. It is clear he is listening to something.
FR SAILOR: I can guarantee that your friends will not be harmed. Who are you?
DOCTOR: I'm the Doctor.
FR SAILOR: The medic? So not the captain. Where is Nelson?
NELSON: Right here.
Nelson steps out.
FR SAILOR: Does your medic often speak for you?
NELSON: No, he does not. But he seems more knowledgeable about your new-found technology and the allies who presented them. Therefore, he is my ambassador.
FR SAILOR: Very well. Everyone move across the ship, get all the crew up here!
The French spread across the deck and run downstairs, a lot of shouting is hear. Amy looks at the Doctor.
AMY: Doctor-?
DOCTOR: Stay here. The crew need looking after.
AMY: Why do you always run off?
DOCTOR: Because it's fun. See ya!
The Doctor follows some of the French sailors, whilst the rest of the French stand on guard, rounding up the English. [Track 3 ends]
Scene 10: Bucentaure Quarter Deck
The Doctor is escorted on board. [Track 4: Parlay]
DOCTOR: Like your ship. It's pretty. Bit big, perhaps. Then again…
One of the crew slaps the Doctor over the head.
DOCTOR: Ow! Again? Really?
He sighs, and follows them down to the hull.
Scene 11: Bucentaure Hull
A thin layer of water waves about unsettled against the floor of the boat. The Doctor walks in, and the sailors guard the door. Villeneuve walks out.
DOCTOR: Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. What an honour. You're taller than I expected.
VILLENEUVE: Why am I not speaking to Nelson?
FR SAILOR: He told us that this man is their ambassador. He knows about our allies-
Villeneuve grabs the lapel of the sailor and brings him in close.
VILLENEUVE: You cretin! Don't you see? He's toying with us! You've brought nothing but a disposable to us!
Villeneuve throws the French soldier to the floor, and he runs off.
VILLENEUVE: Idiot! Get back out there and prepare to fire!
DOCTOR: No, please! I know about the Ro!
Villeneuve holds a hand up.
VILLENEUVE: Stop. How do you know about them?
DOCTOR: I've seen them before. They made you an offer, didn't they?
VILLENEUVE: The weaponry alone is enough to make a guess. Either that or there's a spy. And I'll find out who it is. But if you're telling the truth, we'd better detach.
DOCTOR: What? No! I just want to broker a peace here.
VILLENEUVE: Tell our men to withdraw. We're sinking their ship whilst they're still unarmed.
Villeneuve hesitates.
VILLENEUVE: I really don't think that-As you wish. You've been granted an audience.
A wooden wall slides up to reveal a six-legged alien, similar to a centaur, yet her skin is green and red hair flows down from her head.
DOCTOR: The Ro. Where's your mate?
VILLENEUVE: What?
DOCTOR: The Ro travel in pairs. Where's the other?
RO-460: My partner has been kidnapped. Once I have completed my task, he will be returned to me.
DOCTOR: And what is your task?
RO-460: To save the Franco-Spanish Empire.
DOCTOR: Saving the French Empire means causing history to crumble?
RO-460: Correct.
DOCTOR: Listen, guys. All I want is detente here - you know what that means?
VILLENEUVE: Of course I do - We're French!
DOCTOR: Well, in half an hour, something will happen that is a fixed point in time. You've already hurt this temporal tipping point, but this is like flipping an iceberg. All I want is to let that fixed point run its course. Whatever you want, I can help with that. I'm the Doctor, what's your name?
RO-460: 460.
DOCTOR: Fourth generation? Very nice. You've got a couple of rich cousins around the 430s, don't you? I'm getting distracted, aren't I? Now, 460. I am willing to negotiate terms here.
RO-460: Nothing will be negotiated until 461 is by my side again. I am following in the heritage of 360s. Destroy the English now. I've had my fun with this one. Toss him overboard.
The sailors grab the Doctor. [Track 4 ends]
DOCTOR: Ah! Watch it!
Scene 12: Bucentaure Quarter Deck
Amy and Rory look at the Doctor in confusion from the other boat as he steps onto the edge.
DOCTOR: Guys, guys! Come on! I think I've got jelly babies in my pocket somewhere, they always help!
The Doctor is pushed overboard.
Scene 13: Victory Quarter Deck
Amy pushes past the French.
AMY: Doctor!
RORY: Amy, no!
She looks over. All she sees is the polluted waters of war.
AMY: Doctor? Doctor!
She is dragged back to the others.
NELSON: I'm sorry, my dear.
AMY: He can't be dead, he can't be…
NELSON: This must be the end.
FR SAILOR: You heard the orders!
The French raise their weapons. The English huddle together. [Track 5: A Pressing Need To Save The World 0:00-1:31] Suddenly, some sailors climb over from the edge behind the French and ambush them. They fight, bullets randomly firing across the deck. Rory leads Amy to safety, but realises that the French have been overwhelmed. The English all pick up their weapons.
NELSON: Fantastic work! Where did you come from?
ENG SAILOR: Admiral Collingwood, sir.
NELSON: We lost contact with you a while ago, was everything okay?
ENG SAILOR: We nearly broke through their line, but their weapons outmatched ours.
NELSON: The same happened to us. Their weapons come from the stars. We've got to get onboard the Bucentaure and disable their weaponry. If we do so, then Collingwood's next offensive and ours will be successful.
DOCTOR (oc): Then it's a good thing I found this!
The Doctor climbs back up. Amy runs over. He holds up a machine.
DOCTOR: The power source to the Ro's method of travel. I need time to expand the range. It'll temporarily disable their weaponry, long enough for history to take its rightful course.
NELSON: Then let's get to it!
RORY: You'd better hurry, we've got company.
He gestures towards the French sailors climbing over.
Scene 14: Bucentaure Hull
Villeneuve listens over a speaker.
FR SAILOR: They have it, Admiral! Our ally's power source!
VILLENEUVE: Then procure it!
RO-460: No! If they activate it before we can claim it, then the technology is lost! Return to the formation immediately!
VILLENEUVE: Are you sure?
RO-460: Immediately, Villeneuve!
VILLENEUVE: Retreat. All soldiers, retreat, we are returning to the formation. Now!
Scene 15: Victory Quarter Deck
The Bucentaure starts to move back. The French all run off.
RORY: They're going?
DOCTOR: Calling for backup. I need the sonic, but-Aargh! Wait!
The Doctor kneels down to pick up a French gun. He grins.
DOCTOR: A laser! Amy, hold this. Don't move it!
He gives the power source to Amy.
AMY: Don't miss!
DOCTOR: I'll have you know, I participated in the 2079 Olympics for archery!
He pauses.
DOCTOR: Okay, I came last. Keep still!
The Doctor fires the laser, and it hits the device. It glows and whirrs.
DOCTOR: Look at that, perfect! Yes!
He drops the gun and takes it off Amy.
DOCTOR: Admiral, battle stations! After that ship!
NELSON: Well, you heard him! Move it, come on!
The crew run about, working. Nelson shouts across the hubbub.
Scene 16: Bucentaure Hull
A Frenchman runs down.
FR SAILOR: Admiral, they're coming-!
The Ro spins around and approaches them quickly and menacingly.
RO-460: Faster, then! Faster!
The sailor looks aghast at the Ro's appearance, but nods and runs out. [Track 5 ends]
RO-460: Do not fail me, Admiral, or your entire armoury will be lost.
VILLENEUVE: How do you suppose we retaliate once our reinforcements have backed us?
RO-460: The time will come when they will advance against us. We shall not retaliate until it is right, and their ships will be decimated once more. When it is too late to retreat. Prepare your ships, activate the long distance radio wavelengths. Nothing will stop the empire. Mechanisation will grow and spread across the globe, with you as their leader.
VILLENEUVE: Not me, no, no. Napoleon.
RO-460: Who needs Napoleon when you're leading the greatest victory in the history of this tiny little world?
Villeneuve thinks.
Scene 17: Captain's Chambers
The Doctor is fiddling with the device.
DOCTOR: Okay, it's ready.
He looks up at Amy and Rory, who walk in. They're wearing the Navy uniform, hands behind their back.
DOCTOR: Ooh, get you!
RORY: Don't worry, we didn't leave you out!
They reveal a hat, which he puts on excitedly, laughing.
DOCTOR: Oh...Geronimo!
Outside, there are clamours and yells. A sailor walks in. [Track 6: Battle in the Sky 0:00 - 2:17]
ENG SAILOR: We're approaching the Franco-Spanish. Admiral Nelson demands your presence.
The sailor closes the door behind him.
DOCTOR: 3 minutes until Collingwood breaks through the line. Let's go save history!
They run out.
Scene 18: Victory Quarter Deck
The Franco-Spanish ships are all in a line. They fire weakly, not damaging the ships too much, but rocking them about.
DOCTOR: Okay, we've got one shot at this and one shot only! I need covering fire!
NELSON: What are you going to do?
DOCTOR: I need to get onto the very front of the ship, that pole thing there. I can't get round to it from here, so I'm going to have to climb up the mast and over the sails and get down that way.
AMY: How unbelievably dangerous.
DOCTOR: I've got to be as close to the fleet as possible to do this - it's our only plan.
NELSON: We'll do it. Good luck.
The Doctor starts to climb the rigging, swaying in the wind.
NELSON: Harder fire! More power!
The Doctor struggles to pull himself up the rope, but manages to steady himself on the mast.
DOCTOR: Step 1 done - now for the difficult bit.
He hangs from the mast and shimmys across the pole slowly.
NELSON: You two, get down to the powder room, load the cannons!
Amy and Rory run downstairs. Another blast knocks the mast, and the Doctor starts to lose his grip. He yells, but manages to hold on.
DOCTOR: Okay, slightly regretting this.
Scene 19: Bucentaure Hull
460 snarls.
RO-460: Sink that ship! Annihilate them!
Scene 20: Victory Bow
The Doctor is hanging on the edge of the mast - below him is the front of the ship.
DOCTOR: Don't miss, don't miss, don't miss…
He lets go and lands on the pole.
DOCTOR: Haha! Knew it would work!
He takes out the core.
DOCTOR: Come on, let's do this!
He presses a button on the side, but nothing happens.
DOCTOR: What? No, no, no, no, not like this?
He hits it, and it activates. A wave of energy flies out, hitting all the Franco-Spanish ships.
Scene 21: Bucentaure Deck
The sailors try to fire their weapons, but they don't work.
Scene 22: Bucentaure Hull
Villeneuve listens over a speaker.
SP SAILOR: They've stopped! All of them! Our guns have stopped! They're not working!
RO-460: I warned you, Villeneuve!
He looks crestfallen.
Scene 23: Royal Sovereign Quarter Deck
Collingwood looks out.
COLLINGWOOD: Their fire power is down! Forward!
The ship advances.
Scene 24: Victory Quarter Deck
They watch as Collingwood's ship breaks through the blockade.
ENG SAILOR: We're through! We're through! They took out the Santa Anna! Farewell, Spaniards!
NELSON: There's no time to celebrate just yet! We must still capture the Bucentaure! We have defeated their first line of offence, now we shall defeat them overall!
Suddenly, a large wave throws the crew.
Scene 25: Victory Bow
The Doctor falls, clinging onto the pole with the tips of his fingers.
NELSON: Doctor! Are you okay?
DOCTOR: Just about - but I'm about to drop the core...it's falling out of reach!
NELSON: Get a rope, man! Quickly!
The sailors lower a rope, which the Doctor grabs, now able to hold onto the core tightly. They pull him up with difficulty. [Track 6 ends]
NELSON: Back to work everyone.
DOCTOR: Tell Amy and Rory to get to the TARDIS.
NELSON: The what?
DOCTOR: The TARDIS. Gotta go!
The Doctor flicks a few switches on the core and disappears in a zap of electricity. [Track 7: Onwards!]
ENG SAILOR : What did...
NELSON: Never mind that. The Doctor's friends, now!
Nelson and a sailor run.
Scene 25: Bucentaure Quarter Deck
The Doctor reappears. He flicks a switch, and all the weapons disarm, reforming on the core. He runs downstairs.
Scene 26: Bucentaure Hull
He aims the core at 460.
RO-460: What are you-No!
DOCTOR: Sorry, 460. I'll try and find your mate. But I don't like changing history.
RO-460: Villeneuve! Stop him! You will be a god! Hail the Elite-!
He throws the core at the Ro, and she disappears.
Scene 28: TARDIS
Amy and Rory run inside.
RORY: How do you know?
AMY: I just do, okay? It's the Doctor, of course he needs it.
RORY: Obviously. Do you know how to fly this thing?
AMY: Probably. It's that sort of day.
Amy pulls the handbrake, and the TARDIS dematerialises.
Scene 29: Bucentaure Hull
The Doctor is being apprehended by the French. A large gust of wind blows them all away, aside from the Doctor, who is beaming at the bright light forming in the shape of a wooden box. He runs inside.
Screen 30: Vortex
The TARDIS zooms off into the vortex. [Track 7 ends]
Scene 31: Victory Powder Room
Nelson is staring at the empty space, where the TARDIS was.
NELSON: Wh-Wh..What...But...where did they go? Ho-How?
He doesn't move a muscle.
