Scene 1: Canyon
[Track 1: River's Path] The last vestiges of sunlight are seen through the gap the canyon, before darkness envelops the land. A strong wind blows the dead bushes. Tumbleweed rolls silently in the background.

Scene 2: Cliff Edge
A man stands atop the canyon ridge - he is dressed in a tattered tweed tuxedo, and a black bowler hat - looking down to a Native American camp. He pants. He speaks quietly with a strong American accent.

JACK: Dang it. After all this time, I can't even go back and tell them.

He straightens his posture.

JACK: Gotta keep moving...like they do.

He starts to run again, stumbling along the rocks, which are crumbling and slipping down the steep slope. He sees an overturned wagon. Running over to it, he climbs up and looks inside. There are two dead men inside, their skin rotting and green.

JACK: Monsters. They're nothing but monsters.

He sees a small revolver in the hands of one of the men. He picks it up.

JACK: Time to fight back.

As he jumps down, he continues to run, turning behind him, his vision exhausted, only to see a green blur following closely behind him.

JACK: Damn you! Why won't you stop?! Why won't you ever stop?

The man spins round, aiming the shining silver revolver and firing - but missing. He tries again - misses. He tries once more - but the round is empty.

JACK: Stupid-!

He falls to the ground, his stamina spent, dropping the revolver.

JACK: Can't give up - Can't give up!

He gets back up, staggering towards the edge. He hears a faint whistle - a steam train is passing in the canyon. He tumbles down the edge slowly, making it to the ground.

Scene 3: Canyon
Native Americans watch him tumble down the hill.

NATIVE AMERICAN: We have had enough trouble from them. We shall not save him and bring that trouble to us once again.

CUT TO:

Jack picks himself up, battered and bruised, and starts running towards the train - but something hits him. He falls over once more, as something towers over him - something sharp and menacing.

JACK: No!

He crawls back - there are others approaching him.

JACK: No! I won't let you get me too!

He screams. [Track 1 ends]

Scene 4: Train Car
The Doctor, Amy and Rory are sitting in a train booth. The Doctor is messing about, playing with a stetson.

AMY: Can you focus? I don't really like this time period, especially now after what happened with the Kahler.

DOCTOR: Oh, calm down. There's nothing wrong!

The train suddenly slams to a halt, throwing the passengers to the floor.

RORY: Augh...nothing wrong, you say?

DOCTOR: Perhaps it's normal?

RORY: Perhaps?

DOCTOR: Wait here.

The Doctor jumps to his feet, running to a door and using the sonic to open it.

Scene 5: Canyon
The Doctor sees the train driver. He is bending over, looking at something. The Doctor runs over.

DOCTOR: What's-Oh.

The driver is bent over the corpse of the cowboy - who's skin is green and rotting. The Doctor looks puzzled.

ROLL TITLES

Scene 6: Train Station
[Track 2: Sweetville] The Doctor, Amy and Rory carry the abnormal body off the train.

AMY: What is this? The mark of some criminal?

DOCTOR: Nope, aliens.

RORY: Definitely? That last time in Ancient Mesopotamia was embarrassing.

DOCTOR: Definitely aliens. I've seen something like this before.

AMY: When?

DOCTOR: Regenerations ago, when I had a big scarf, I met this Zolfa-Thuran called Meglos. He had a habit of taking over people's bodies and when he did, they look like cacti.

AMY: Could it be this Meglos?

DOCTOR: No, can't be. Similar, but not him.

DRIVER: In here.

Scene 7: Waiting Room
The Doctor rests the cowboy on a chair.

ENGINEER: This the ague? Never seen it like this before.

AMY (To Doctor): Ague?

DOCTOR (To Amy): Malaria.

AMY (To Doctor): Ah.

DOCTOR: No, the ague's symptoms are different to this. I need some blood samples.

ENGINEER: Blood samples? Nah, all he needs is that wonder drug.

AMY: Again, wonder drug?

DOCTOR: Uh- never mind. Trust me, That won't work. Let me deal with him myself, I'm a Doctor.

ENGINEER: ...Alright then.

The Doctor takes out the sonic and scans him. He flips the sonic up to check the readings.

DOCTOR: Hmm, there's a lot of brain focusing on...Rain Valley?

ENGINEER: Rain Valley, that's about 4 miles…that way. It's the closest town.

DOCTOR: I need someone to stay here and keep an eye on him.

AMY: I'll stay.

RORY: What?

AMY: You went to medical school, you can help him.

RORY: Right...not like I can study alien viruses.

DOCTOR: This isn't the most ideal of situations. The best place is in Mexico.

RORY: I don't want to spend another 5 hours on the train back to the TARDIS.

DOCTOR: Exactly. So this Rain Valley is the best we can get.

RORY: Yeah. See you, Amy.

AMY: Don't forget me.

Amy chuckles. Rory and the Doctor walk out. Behind Amy, the corpse twitches slightly.

Scene 8: Train Station
A man looks at the Doctor and Rory. He is wearing a leather poncho over a plain brown clothing.

ZACHARY: Hey.

The Doctor turns to look at the man.

DOCTOR: Oh.

The Doctor clears his throat, and replies in a clearly phoney American accent.

DOCTOR: Hi.

ZACHARY: I heard you wanted to go Rain Valley. That right?

DOCTOR: Might be. Who's asking?

ZACHARY: I'm heading that way. There ain't no trains 'til the morning.

[Track 2 ends]

RORY: And you just happen to be waiting at a train station, why?

ZACHARY: My transport needs a break.

DOCTOR: Your transport wouldn't be a horse by any chance, would it?

[Track 3: Out West 0:00 - 0:23]

RORY: Oh, no.

The Doctor is beaming wildly.

RORY: No, no, no!

CUT TO:

Scene 9: Desert
The Doctor is on a horse, galloping across the sandy plains, dragging a carriage behind it. He whoops. Rory sticks his head out of the window and shouts to the Doctor.

RORY: Perhaps you might want to slow down, Doctor!

DOCTOR: What?

RORY: Slow down!

DOCTOR: I can't hear you! Whooo!

The horse suddenly stops, and the Doctor is thrown forward. [Track 3 ends] He jumps up, stretching. Zachary climbs out of the carriage.

ZACHARY: Okay. Get in the back.

DOCTOR: Aw…

As Zachary walks past the Doctor, his hand glows with an olive tint, which the Doctor doesn't notice.

Scene 10: Carriage
The Doctor climbs in. Rory budges over.

RORY: Well done.

DOCTOR: Oh, shush.

They wait for a moment.

RORY: We're not moving.

Rory looks out.

RORY: Doctor!

[Track 4: Make Peace] The Doctor looks - Zachary has transformed. His face glows green and is cracked. He approaches the cab.

DOCTOR: Oh, hi! Cab for cactus?

The Doctor bursts out the other door, dragging Rory out into the desert.

Scene 11: Desert
The Doctor runs towards the horse, but Zachary cuts them off.

DOCTOR: Not that way!

RORY: Which way?

DOCTOR: Any way but that way!

They run off into the dry plains. Zachary stops, and kneels on the floor. He rests his hands on the dust. He hisses.

CUT TO:

The Doctor and Rory run across the desert.

RORY: Is he still following us?

DOCTOR: If not, then why not? I think he's got reinforcements!

Rory looks round.

RORY: You're kidding me.

DOCTOR: What?

RORY: Reinforcements!

They look and see the cacti springing to life, chasing them.

DOCTOR: They're kinda cute, aren't they?

RORY: It doesn't look like that's their intention! Aah!

Rory's foot is caught in a dead bush.

RORY: I can't move my foot, it's like the bush is holding onto it!

The Doctor uses the sonic on it, but it won't budge. The Cacti surround them, as the Doctor raises his hands, prompting Rory to do the same. Suddenly, a rain of gunshots cause them to duck to the floor. Three cowboys on horses ride towards them.

RORY: It's not hurting them!

DOCTOR: It's not meant to - it's a distraction! Can you wriggle free?

The Doctor and Rory run behind the cacti and over to the cowboys.

JAMES: What you doin' out here? Get on!

RORY: Thanks, mate!

OLLIE: Escape first, chat later!

The Doctor and Rory climb behind two of the men.

DOCTOR: Can I ride-Woah!

The cowboys turn the horses round and gallop off quickly. [Track 4 ends]

Scene 12: Waiting Room
Amy is getting a raggedy cloth, soaking it in slightly dirty water. The engineer walks in.

ENGINEER: We can't keep him here for long, ma'am. It's nearly 11 o'clock.

AMY: So?

ENGINEER: Y'know, how they attacking the workers.

Amy looks clueless.

ENGINEER: Those damned Indians. There's a camp nearby and we can't find it and wipe them out.

AMY: Do you really have to wipe them out?

ENGINEER: They're getting in the way of construction. It's a new world, ma'am. But we gotta shut down, stop them from looting here.

AMY: Well, we can't move him. We don't know about this at all, we can't let it spread, what if it's contagious?

ENGINEER: Perhaps it's some kinda...plant virus. He certainly looks like a cactus.

AMY: I don't know, can plant viruses adapt like that?

ENGINEER: You're askin' the wrong person, ma'am.

The cowboy stands up.

ENGINEER: Hey!

They spin round to see the zombified cowboy lumbering towards them. [Track 5: The Head of an Enemy]

AMY: Get back - now!

Amy pushes the engineer behind her and raises her hand towards the cowboy.

AMY: Hiya - do you remember your name? Do you know who you are? Can you speak English?

The cowboy stops, and glares at Amy.

AMY: Who are you?

The window smashes. The engineer has picked up a revolver and has tried to shoot the alienated cowboy. The cowboy retreats into the corner of the room.

AMY: What was that for?!

ENGINEER: I've...never fired a gun before!

AMY: Look, it doesn't want to hurt us! Maybe it just wants to communicate with us! This guy's just a host!

Amy looks back to the shy creature.

AMY: Are you okay?

As Amy slowly walks towards him, she jumps back as it snarls, its skin now spiky. It runs outside, pushing past the engineer.

ENGINEER: Aah! Damned thing scratched me.

AMY: It's not a thing, it's human, but there's someone else inside. It's not a virus, it's another life form. Alien. So we've gotta get after it.

ENGINEER: I don't gotta do anything. I'm gonna get a bandage for my hand, just get outta here.

Amy runs off after the cowboy. The engineer looks at the large gash on his hand that was made. A small green slime oozes out of the cut.

Scene 13: Train Station
Amy looks round, and catches sight of the creature running towards the mine. She chases after it.

AMY: Hey! Stop! I don't want to hurt you!

CUT TO:

Scene 14: Mine Entrance
The creature pushes the miners away and jumps into one of the minecart, letting it loose. Amy runs down the track.

Scene 15: Mine
As Amy reaches the bottom of the steep incline, she notices that the creature has already gone with the minecart toppled over. She runs over to one of the miners. [Track 5 ends]

MINER: Hey, you ain't s'posed ta be down here! Just like I told that green fella-

AMY: No time for that - The "green fella", he could hurt you. Get everyone out, trust me.

MINER: We're not just gonna up and leave! This is our money we're minin'!

AMY: If you don't, you're not going to get any money. Do you want to die?

MINER: Nah...I-I guess not.

AMY: Off you go, then.

The miner nods subtly and walks to the rest of the miners. Amy walks through the dark, damp caves, feeling the rough edge of the stone against the tips of her fingers. She starts to crouch as the roof of the mine gets lower.

AMY: Hello? Are you there? I don't want to hurt you. Just please, come out. We can talk.

She waits for a response, and then hears a low growl.

AMY: Okay, you want some space - I get that, backing up.

Amy crawls backwards.

AMY: That better? My name's Amy, what's yours?

The creature crawls out and looks at Amy.

AMY: Oh, hello. How about I call you...Spiky? That okay? Well, Spiky. If you want to invade, understand that I've got a friend, and he'll stop you. He's done so before. But if you just want to talk, we can set that up. He's at Rain Valley - Do you know Rain Valley? We can go there.

Spiky nods.

AMY: Good.

Amy breathes out calmly.

Scene 16: Shack Entrance
The Doctor, Rory and the others step off the horses into an old shack in the middle of the plains.

DOCTOR: Thanks for the help, guys - I'm the Doctor, this is Rory.

RORY: What are we doing here?

JAMES: It's dangerous to travel at night.

DOCTOR: Then what were you doing?

James starts breaking through the boards blocking up the old shack.

OLLIE: ...Zachary, the guy you encountered...he was one of us. But he got possessed. We had to get him away, we left him in the desert, but then we saw him fleeing towards civilisation. We had to stop him. Then those things came. Living cacti.

DOCTOR: You say he got possessed.

OLLIE: If you get scratched by one of those things, you're a dead man. You can't let them inject their venom into your blood.

RORY: Haven't you contacted the British Empire?

JAMES: What, and concede our independence? We only just got them out of this country, we ain't inviting them back in.

DOCTOR: What's the date?

OLLIE: The...the date?

DOCTOR: Yes.

OLLIE: Uh, 17th July.

DOCTOR: What year?

OLLIE: 1776, obviously. Why?

DOCTOR: Uh-No, no reason.

Rory walks over to the Doctor:

RORY (quietly): What is it?

DOCTOR (quietly): 17th July 1776. August 1776, the British return and war breaks out against the Settlers. The British end up taking New York, but that's not the point.

RORY (quietly): What is the point?

DOCTOR (quietly): If we don't stop whoever's here, they could take over the entire British Empire. The largest global Empire in history.

JAMES: Come in.

James opens the door, and they go in.

Scene 17: Shack Living Room
The Doctor, Rory and the others walk in. It is very dusty, derelict, cobwebs hiding in the corners of the room. James picks up an oil lamp and lights it.

JAMES: Just about works.

PETE: I'll go look around, make sure it's safe.

OLLIE: Alright - be careful, Pete, this place is old.

PETE: I know, I know.

Pete walks out. As the Doctor collapses onto a hard sofa, dust flies up and he coughs hardly, before clearing his throat.

DOCTOR: So, ahem, how do you know what they are?

OLLIE: We're from Rain Valley - We've been hunting those Cherokee tribes down for years. So obviously, they gone and done some sorta curse upon us.

RORY: A curse?

OLLIE: Yeah, one of those voodoo tricks.

DOCTOR: Nice suspicion, but it's not magic, it's not a curse. It's alien, extra-terrestrial, from space.

JAMES: That's just absurd.

DOCTOR: Better than your magic trick idea.

OLLIE: Who are these aliens, then? If you know this, then who are they?

DOCTOR: I don't know.

PETE (oc): Hey! Help!

They hear and their heads shoot left. They run up the stairs.

Scene 18: Shack Landing
They run up. Pete has fallen through the floor and is holding onto the unstable floorboards. He is trying to help himself up.

DOCTOR: Keep back, the floor might fall through more.

The Doctor edges carefully towards Pete, before reaching down to him. The Doctor pulls Pete up. He breathes heavily.

PETE: Thanks, man. Look down there, though.

They peer over the edge - something has tunneled from the shack under the ground.

DOCTOR: Hello, what made you, then?

The Doctor starts to climb down.

RORY: Doctor, careful!

DOCTOR: That's helpful - before you said that, I was just going to jump down.

The Doctor lands onto the floor carefully. He whips out the sonic and starts pointing it around.

DOCTOR: Yep, I'm getting traces of something not from Earth. We should go in.

RORY: You're joking, right?

DOCTOR: What?

RORY: Creepy, alien tunnel and you want to look?

[Track 6: I See You Silence]

PETE: What made this thing? Where does it go?

DOCTOR: Some sort of disembodied being, presumably. It probably just needed to build up its army, then it'd...oh. Oh, no.

OLLIE: What?

DOCTOR: They'd…return to fulfill their goals.

The Doctor looks scared at Ollie. He runs to one of the windows.

OLLIE: Oh, my god!

About a dozen cacti are marching towards the house, surrounding it.

OLLIE: You're right, they're coming!

DOCTOR: Is there a way out?

JAMES: No!

DOCTOR: Down here, come on!

RORY: What?

DOCTOR: This is our only way out!

RORY: So to escape the monsters, we're going into their tunnel?

DOCTOR: Yep, down here, quickly!

The Doctor helps them down, aside from James.

DOCTOR: Come on, James. You too!

JAMES: I can hold them off.

DOCTOR: What are you talking about?

OLLIE: Don't be ridiculous, James!

DOCTOR: You told us what would happen if they scratched you, we can't let them build up in numbers.

JAMES: Thanks for your concern, Doc, but you seem like you know what you're doing. If I can slow them down, you better make sure you send them to kingdom come.

OLLIE: Bullets can't stop them!

JAMES: It'll slow them down! Now, go!

Ollie sighs and throws up his revolver. James catches it.

DOCTOR: Thank you, James.

The Doctor leads the way into the cave. James hears banging, and runs down to see them breaking through the walls.

JAMES: Come on, then.

James starts firing the gun - but not at the cacti - at the roof. [Track 6 ends]

CUT TO:

Scene 19: Cave
The cave rumbles as the bullets' thunderous sound against the wood and stone of the shack, and dust falls from the ceiling as there is a loud crash, blocking off their entrance.

OLLIE: James!

DOCTOR: He destroyed the house.

PETE: We've got to keep moving, let's go!

DOCTOR: You're right. We know that they're getting ready for their plan.

They scramble through the tight space.

Scene 20: Rain Valley Entrance
The Sun peers over the horizon as Amy and Spiky get off a horse.

AMY: We found it - Rain Valley. I thought we were lost forever out there.

Spiky falls to the floor. [Track 7: It's A Fight!]

AMY: Hey, Spiky? You alright?

The ground shakes as Spiky screeches.

AMY: Spiky, what are you doing-? Oh, my god.

The plant life starts to awaken. They start to advance towards the town menacingly.

AMY: Stop it! Oh, my god! What have I done?

Amy runs off.

Scene 21: Rain Valley
Amy runs along. Some Settlers run over to her with pitchforks.

MORGAN: Hands up!

AMY: Listen, I'm not the one you want to be aggressive to! This may sound crazy, but a bunch of plants have come to life, and I don't think they're happy! I need to speak to the Doctor!

MORGAN: Doctor? There ain't no Doctor here!

WENDY: That ain't the point, Morgan!

MORGAN: You're right - alert the sheriff! I'll take her!

Morgan grabs Amy and drags her away.

AMY: Hey-What are you doing?! Get off!

MORGAN: You led them straight to us! You're in big trouble, missy!

CUT TO:

The villagers are all arming themselves with shotguns and torches. They all run to the outskirts, ready to defend.

Scene 22: Cave Opening
There is a large, elliptical cave opening, full of purple and blue crystals. In the centre of the cave is a hovering sphere, glowing green, it's appearance murky and gaseous. The Doctor, Rory, Ollie and Pete climb through.

DOCTOR: Oh! Okay. We must be in its ship

PETE: What is it?

DOCTOR: The disembodied form, I guess.

OLLIE: You're telling me this thing is an alien?

DOCTOR: Yes, I am. Hello? Are you capable of speech?

The Doctor reaches out.

RORY: Doctor!

DOCTOR: It's okay.

He touches the sphere and gasps.

DOCTOR: Ah! Telepathic creature - An intelligence. You don't happen to be great, do you? No, I didn't think so. Why are you here? Agh! Sorry, this hurts quite a bit. Go on.

[Track 7 ends] The Doctor listens as the sphere speaks in his mind.

DOCTOR: You...you're...Amy? You used her?

RORY: Amy? What's happened?!

DOCTOR: She's...No!

The Doctor jumps back, worried. [Track 8: The King]

DOCTOR: They're invading the Earth - they've been ordered to - I can't tell who, but they're doing it. And they tried to find Rain Valley, and Amy helped them.

RORY: Who? Amy helped who?

The Doctor gets back up.

DOCTOR: Tell me - who are you?

There is a low growl, before a whisper.

INTELLIGENCE: A…

PETE: It talks! How come it's talking now?

DOCTOR: It reached in my mind, learned the secret of the TARDIS telepathic circuits, replicating it.

OLLIE: Are we supposed to understand that?

RORY: It learned something our magic box can do.

OLLIE: Your magic what?

INTELLIGENCE: Z…

DOCTOR: Learning the concepts of the alphabet, identifying the dominant language of the planet - right now, probably the most commonly spoken language in the British Empire.

OLLIE: English.

INTELLIGENCE: We...

DOCTOR: Take your time.

INTELLIGENCE: We...We are...incomprehensible to your species.

DOCTOR: Then what can we call you? Identify yourself.

INTELLIGENCE: We are...Superious.

DOCTOR: Superious. Devised from our language, why?

SUPERIOUS: We are incomprehensible to your species. You know nothing of us.

DOCTOR: Then teach us. Tell us.

SUPERIOUS: We are...going to take your world. You belong to us.

DOCTOR: The invasion - It's started. Amy! Amy!

They turn around to leave, when three Cacti block off the entrance. Superious laughs evilly.

Scene 23: Rain Valley
Amy hears the gunfire. They approach a well.

AMY: Please, I'm not with them! I was tricked!

MORGAN: We don't have time or the resources to waste on shooting you. We'll just drown you.

AMY: Please, no, please, please! Where's the Doctor, I've got to find the Doctor!

MORGAN: I already told you, there ain't no Doctor here!

AMY: There's been some misunderstanding, please don't throw me down there!

Amy looks scared.

Scene 24: Rain Valley Outskirts
The Cacti continue to surround Rain Valley. The settlers fight back, terrified.

SETTLER: It's not working! We're going to die!

Their eyes widen with fear. [Track 8 ends]
