#0 Prologue
Foreword
Hello all! Welcome to a little creativity muscle flexing exercise! It's something I came up with a bit on a whim, but once I started to make the class I felt like I really wanted to give it an honest go. Writing is something I enjoy, and never had the drive to really give it a try for others reading, so I figured I'd start with something a bit familiar and a bit with some pre-established world building so I can start to work those creativity muscles.
First, some house cleaning things though. This takes place a few years before the main events of the series, so as to avoid potential story beats getting awkward or dealing with things happening in the manga/anime. It's just a personal thing that I wish to borrow the greater world, not the characters/scenario itself. While big plot characters like the manga 1-A, All-Might, All for One, etc. aren't going to appear, that's not to say a few teachers or other pro heroes won't make an appearance if it makes sense to.
Next, the elephant in the room. I'm terrible at names. Absolutely dreadful at them. Especially when I don't speak the source language at all. I did the best I could with them, looking up certain words and doing what limited knowledge I have; but I know they're all pretty bad. Feel free to take some joking jabs at them if you'd like of course, just know that the names are basically totally made up. In that light I'd appreciate it if nothing else if you would go a tad easy on me on that front, thanks!
Lastly, goals for this project. With a class of twenty students plus their homeroom teacher, I have a lot to cover in this prologue! I plan on hopefully giving every student their own short story, as if it was an episode or two of the show or so. There won't be some big overarching plot, no super big bad they have to defeat. Just students going through their lives preparing to be heroes. Some might be super heavy, others more lighthearted.
That said, the order is completely up in the air! I hope you'll take the time to read through the prologue and get a feel for who I've come up with. In the comments or reviews, feel free to let me know who you would like to see get their story first! If a few clearly stand out to people I'll probably go ahead and do them first.
Thank you so much for giving this a read and I hope you enjoy.
The familiar tones of a school bell ring out across the campus on a warm spring day. The first day of an entirely new year. Graduates saying their goodbyes fresh in the minds of students advancing a grade, while the bright eyed first years walk about in awe of the large twin buildings and the walkway that connects the two. U. A. High School, the premiere hero school in the country. Trees rustle gently from a small gust of wind as long shadows of the morning sun stretch across the yard over a sea of grey jackets and deeper green pants and skirts.
The slow filling in of students commence as the initial alert echoes across the yard, shuffling their way into the doors as groups and grades start to disperse. Fresh first years look about a tad worried or nervously as the first floor posters have convenient maps of the school on them for the start of the year, along with little drawings of principal Nezu on the sides giving little tips on efficient routes on where to get to where one might need to go.
This however was not a group of those bright eyed and bushy tailed students. The layouts are familiar enough after a year of training, study, and experience at such a place of hero learning. A level of casualness sounds in the steps of these students, as compared to the more heavy thuds of first years a little more self conscious. As the final bell to signify the start of homeroom rings, the class of 2-A is already filled with students, already a group of friends and in many ways partners in their dreams of becoming pro heroes.
The students chat a bit as the door up front opens, quieting down as their homeroom teacher arrives. The younger woman walks in, dressed in a blouse with her ID card hanging from her neck on a lanyard as she would explain is to help the first years identify her at a glance. A pencil skirt to just above her knees and black tights into some very slightly raised shoes. The slight clicking of her heels helps get the students to quiet down who might not have immediately noticed her arrival.
The woman brushes her dark brown hair to the side some, creating a slight curve of her bangs towards her ear. Down to her shoulders her hair dangles, given a bit more care today for the first day of the term, a bit shinier and a bit more product added to it. She gave a soft smile as her eyes scanned the room, clear irises giving a 'seeing more than she should' vibe. "Good morning everyone." She greets the class.
"Good morning Tamashini-sensei" the group of students greet in unison in a bevy of different tones and attitudes.
-Yondaka Tamashini. Quirk: Mind reader! The homeroom teacher of class 2-A has the ability to read minds! The more people around the harder it is to pick out individual thoughts. The closer she is to her target the easier it becomes! Strives to create the perfect image of a good teacher!-
"It's good to see everyone again!" The teacher happily accepted the greeting from the twenty students she had been placed in charge of last year. "I hope you're all prepared for your second year here. Some of you already have your provisional licenses, some of you don't. No need to worry, everyone grows at their own pace, and I'm here to get you all to where you need to be. Whether it's work studies or simply internships, you're all going to start getting more practical experience than during your first years. It's going to be a very busy year, so I hope you came with a bit of ~spring~ in your step." She couldn't help but smile a bit at her end of opening talk, spending a lot of thought on it last night.
The class sat there in relative quiet, at this point used to their homeroom teacher's attempts at lightening the mood or creating a more friendly atmosphere, and rather than risk her anger instead tend to just let her have her fun despite the atmosphere thinking it was pretty lame. "Oh I get it.", comes the voice of a girl with long floppy ears a few seconds later. A bit soft so as to not disturb the class.
Tamashini's eyebrow twitched lightly, despite her stoic smile and otherwise generally pleasant demeanor. She could tell the joke fell flat, but since no one is saying anything she also can't really reprimand them either. On the one hand, she was happy the students had matured enough to not just outright say it was a bad joke and hurt her feelings, but on the other she missed being able to blow off some steam when they would do so at the start of their first years. She let out a soft cough to break the quiet.
"Anyways…" she continued. "Let's have a word from the class rep and vice rep to get us going." She conceded the point of her joke and called up two students from the group, who proceeded to rise from their seats and head toward the big chalkboard up front and the teacher podium in front of it. Tamashini stepped aside as a girl came up to the front and center, standing nearby the boy who also came up.
The girl, class rep, was the epitome of traditional pretty. Long straight black hair to her mid back, light parts of her bangs to the side. A soft face that wasn't too round with fluttery brown eyes. A big cheerful smile of her wide lips beamed over her classmates. She was thin with just the right amount of curves where she wanted them to be and brushed some of her hair aside for presence.
"Good morning fellow students of now 2-A. It's a pleasure to see you all once again as we join together once more. What felt like a long and tiring first year went by in a flash, and we now find ourselves as senpai to the coming in students. Our progress continues well on our paths to becoming heroes, and I'm truly honored to continue to be your class representative. Your wonderful faces and cheerful demeanor are all I need to feel ready to go on this next chapter of our education and training. Please work with me and each other so that we can continue to create a wonderful school life for all of us."
The class applauded, happy smiles on their faces as everyone seemed quite pleased with the whole talk from their rep. A soft ring of the clapping bounced about the room as the gentle atmosphere created in the classroom ebbs. The clapping subsided as the students exhaled a soft sigh of contentment at the sight and sound of their class rep. Tamashini-sensei waved her lightly off the podium now that she was done. "Nice speech but please don't use your quirk in class…" She said with a warm smile on her face as well.
-Hime Egaone. Quirk: Motivational Speaker! Her words can win over anyone willing to listen, and make them feel good and bring them to her side through mutual understanding! Great for diffusing arguments!-
"Now now, I'm simply repairing the mood." Hime's eyes narrowed ever so slightly as she went to stand next to her teacher, who was finally able to let go of her smile as the motivational speaker quirk was released. As the class rep came down from the slight podium, the vice rep stepped up. A boy of average size, and frizzy black hair that swept back with a bit of front covering and not much care into styling it. His brown eyes underneath some glasses look over the class.
"I'm in your care this year too…" He turned and walked off the podium in a trudge. Tamashini could get a clear listen on his inner voice. 'Well, no point trying to follow that up.' the boy thought to himself as the class seemed a bit relieved he didn't go on with a small speech as well. Tamashini couldn't help but softly sigh to herself. She had to break the tie for vice rep since everyone voted for Hime probably due to her power, and she felt a guy of his looks would do a good job. Which, to be fair, he would do, but she wishes he was a bit more sociable.
-Ryo Marisu. Quirk: Hard light! He can create constructs out of light and manipulate them! The larger and more complex the shape it is, the weaker and easier to break it becomes!-
Tamashini-sensei let the two return to their seats while returning to her station as teacher herself and gave a slight ahem as she opened her class roll, "I know everyone is here just by looking over your wonderful faces, but since it is indeed the first day I think roll call is in order to help get us going. Starting off, Barusu Lei." She looked up from her ledger towards the student she called.
"Here!" the young man stated. Short spiky black hair straight up, a well toned body and an eager, energetic face. His hand twirled around his pencil quickly and impressively as it spun about as if it was practically floating in the air. A straight laced demeanor failed to hide his energetic nature and eagerness to get going.
-Barsus Lei. Quirk: Weapon Master! Any tool he picks up he learns instantly on how to use it! In a matter of minutes he can learn to use almost anything! Kung Fu masters hate him!-
"Thank you but please stop playing with your pencil…." Tamashini smiled but tried to sound more teacher-like than before as she looked the boy over from her spot.
"Oh uh, sorry…." Barasu chuckled and grabbed the pencil firmly and put it on his desk, unable to hide his fidgety nature of wanting to just play around with things. He gave a loud ahem to plop down in his seat and let his teacher continue.
"Ok, then, next is Butaso Ieyatsu." Tamashini called out as a tall boy way in the back stood up. He snorted loudly through a long pig like snout of his mouth. He was large, muscular and rather thick in size. He had a hog head with big tusks from his lower jaw. His hair along a thin line from his forehead back tied into a loose ponytail. His nose wiggled lightly as he breathed through it.
"Here teach." His deep voice called to the front of the class from the back seat he had been placed in. A gravelly voice riddled with a throaty growl coming from deep in his diaphragm, standing firm and tall before plopping back down into his chair.
-Butaso Ieyatsu. Quirk: Hog! He's built and looks like a wild hog, tough with a thick hide and power to boot! His bad habit is snorting rather hard when he breathes!-
"Why do I have to sit in front of him…?" whines a tired groan from the girl sitting in front of him. Long, deep red hair unstyled hung from her head, with a rather unkept uniform with a button down and the tie a bit loose around her neck. Her narrow eyes also in red glare a bit back at the large guy behind her. Butaso's nose wiggled as the air going in caused a very light snort as he coughed and tried to hold his nose from moving so much.
"Monday, don't be so mean, you know that's how it goes." Tamashini-sensei sighed at her rude student and decided to check her off the roll too before moving in since the red head made the effort to chime in at all.
-Kaoki Masuku. Quirk: Persona! She has seven different personalities, each with their own power! Too bad they can't communicate so they're constantly re-learning what happened the other days of the week. Forgot what day it is? Just check her hair color!-
"Chisana Hanabe." the teacher called as a tiny girl from up front slid off her chair and raised her hand so she could be seen. If one didn't know better one could confuse her for a grade schooler. Her lighter brown hair dangles in twin tails around her shoulders. She answers present in a high pitched and cute tone before climbing back into her chair as her legs dangle slightly above the floor. Quick and to the point, as Tamashini preferred.
-Chisana Hanabe. Quirk: Shrink! She can shrink herself down to a tiny 2cm tall! Don't be fooled though, when she grows back to normal size quick she can launch herself pretty hard!-
"Hm, did you grow at all during this past year Chisana?" The girl next to her smirked as her brown ponytail practically wiggled from her smugness. While not being big herself, she was at least bigger and more high school looking than her neighbor. A thin frame with a bit of flatness around gave the girl a plain Jane sort of look to her. She continued to tease the little girl nearby.
Chisana pouted with a puff of her cheek as her eyes narrowed, slowly turning to the instigator. "Well at least my power and body work together correctly, background character." She chided in response as the teacher marked them both present, letting them get their rivalry out of their system.
"What'd you call me, you little brat?" The plain looking girl's arms bulked up hard as a vein stressed out on her head. "Don't forget I can rip you in half ten times over tiny tot!" She glared at the shrinking girl beside her.
-Rei Sakura. Quirk: Big Bombastic! The more people underestimate her for her plainness, the more power she gets and the more she grows! Beware her quick temper!-
Tamashini grunted a bit and clapped her hands a few times. "Enough you two!" She chided as the girls gave a heavy 'tch' at each other and quieted down, clearly not happy about being seated next to each other but considering how short they were, it was the only option for the teacher to consider. "Next, Haru Sokudo." She called out.
A boy more in the middle of the class stood up and smiled. His softer red hair like a setting sun waved lightly from the air as it swayed back and forth gently, fuzzy and free. "I'm here teacher, yup, happy to be back with everyone and hoping we can get things going at a good pace while-"
"Stopping you right there, the last thing we need is another speech." Tamashini cut off the student before he could really get going, as she knew once Haru got going it became increasingly harder to get him to stop. The boy chuckled and apologized, rubbing the back of his neck as he sat back down.
-Haru Sokudo. Quirk: Momentum! He can keep adding the force of things onto each other without any extra effort. One step becomes the speed of two, then four, then eight, and so on! Once he gets going it gets hard to stop...for him too!-
The teacher exhaled, already nipping bad habits in the bud. She felt a bit worried for her class as she scanned the room, seeing flecks of blue hair behind one of the guys while shifting about a bit. "I can see you Mahoko, you're not vanishing from class so easily." she worded a bit sternly, starting to lose some patience with her group. She ticked a few more students off as the culprit this time stood.
"Heh heh heh….sorry, I was trying to see if I could nix the line of sight…" The blue haired girl chuckled and lightly bonked her head in a 'tee hee' sort of way. She was tall and quite leggy for a girl, and her bright round eyes gave her a more feminie tone to her face compared to her stronger physical presence than most girls her age.
-Mahoko Hoshino. Quirk: Vanishing Act! She can make anything she touches disappear and reappear anywhere within a one hundred meter radius of herself! She does magic shows on Fridays-
Tamashini rubbed her temples slightly as she exhaled, wanting to keep things in a simple and orderly manner as things started to get out of control briefly with a few of her students. She turned to one of the students she knew wouldn't be as fussy to deal with. She looked over with a strong glint in her eye towards the boy. A rounder kid in size and stature, his combed over black hair gave an even smoother ball like shape to the rest of him as he blinked a bit at the teacher glaring at him.
He stood up lightly, calling himself here in a moderate tone, and keeping it at that, sensing the teacher was in no mood for shenanigans at the moment, trying to measure how much more she could really take at the rate things were going. "Thank you Denta." the teacher said as he sat back down at his desk.
- Denta Sansuke. Quirk: Calculator! He can calculate the distance, speed, trajectory, and angle of just about anything! Very good for precise maneuvers and plans but is pretty weak in a fight-
"Heh heh heh, got a bit rounder lately have you Denta?" A girl behind him chuckled deeply and adjusted her glasses. She had black hair, spiked some at the bottom as it frayed outwards, otherwise smooth against her head. Her eyes flickered as if processing information. "A few grams in various places, hrm, I'd say you should lose weight, but just increasing the contrast with you and Tsuyo just makes the pairing even more forbidden, haaaa~" she sighed wistfully with a deep smirk on her face, eyes glistening at her own internal pairing she spoke of out loud.
-Akane Terige. Quirk: Gamer vision! She sees the world as an RPG! Stats, health, cooldowns for moves, damage values, she sees it all! Bad for privacy!-
Denta turned his neck around to look at the girl behind him, face filled with a mix of annoyance and fear at what might be going on in that girl's head. "S...seriously, why are you pairing me up with Tsuyo?" He grunted at her.
Tamashini at the front would hear everyone's voice asking that exact same question in unison, making it quite clear on her mind reading ability. She checked the two off the ledger and moved onto the partner in Akane's delusions, Tsuyo Yowa. Another citizen of the back row of class stood up. He was easily the tallest guy in class, and muscular to boot. Large and in charge one might say. His frayed black hair pointed a bit more backwards and down his neck gave him an even more intimidating edge to him. He greeted the teacher and specifically avoided looking at Denta and Akane further up as his attention turned to the window instead, a bit desperate not to get involved in the shenanigans.
-Tsuyo Yowa. Quirk: Critical hit! He has a random chance of his attacks doing massive damage! However his normal strikes are weaker than normal, so he works out a ton to make up for that!-
Tamashini crossed him off the ledger too. Her clear eyes darted about looking for a lower energy student to not cause another mishap, wanting to get through a normal school day before things picked up in earnest on things such as battle training that tends to get people riled up just for existing. "Sei Shineda!" she said a bit louder than she probably should have just to get attention
A girl with long white hair and extremely long bangs over parts of her eyes shook up with a soft ack, well, soft normally but might be a bit loud for her. "Ah….h….here…." She shuddered some, a bit worried that the teacher might be picking on her due to her classmates' hyperactive attitudes. Her boney body shook gently as she tried to sit back down quickly. Her long hair brushed against the floor slightly as she took her seat. Her sunken eyes staring down at her desk to avoid looking at anyone.
-Sei Shineda. Quirk: Haunted! Any person she marks by gazing at them will have terrifying visions until she consciously releases her quirk!-
Tamashini quickly looked to Sei's neighbor, to keep things moving quickly and efficiently without giving a moment to stray too far off course. "Birito Tobusa." She called as the boy next to Sei stood up briefly. His blonde hair completely slicked back with some hair gel, leaving some skin above his ears for a particular kind of haircut. Decently built as he jolted up. He called here, a bit intimidated as well by his teacher's more stern mood. As he sat back down every student in a circle around him yelped lightly at the static shock from the metal parts of the chairs
"S-sorry, lost a bit in concentration there." He apologized, voice coming out a bit synthesized, like it had gone through a filter. Enough to be perfectly understandable, but almost like a phone call.
-Birito Tobusa. Quirk: Telectric Man! He can become electricity and travel through electronics and electric wiring! Can only give people a slight static shock himself though.-
Tamashini's eyes scanned the room for the few remaining students she hadn't called on yet, slowly creeping across the lines of students before her. It was then she saw two fleshy, floppy ears bouncing lightly as if they were wings flapping ever so gently. Her eyebrows twitched slightly as she saw the display. "Pinochi, playing with others already?" She growled at the bowl cut boy sitting behind the girl whose ears were flapping ever so gracefully.
"Sorry Tamashini-sensei, just uh, they're kind of relaxing that way…." He calmly said. His bowl cut evenly trimmed across his head, a slightly pointed nose and well defined cheekbones and eyes. His hand holding some puppet handles pulled back on a pair of strings back into their frames.
-Pinochi Ningyoto. Quirk: Puppetmaster! With his puppet handles, he can use the strings to control objects! The effect is broken when the strings are cut!-
"Oh, it's okay. If it makes people happy they can play with my ears." The girl Pinochi had been messing with said in a slow, raspy tone for a girl. Her long, floppy ears reached down to her shoulders as if it were hair. She had light brown normal hair going fully backwards to her neck with streaks of white in it. Her face adorned with a very round and very big nose and perfectly circular round eyes you could just gaze into.
-Inuka Kabate. Quirk: Hound Dog! Extremely excellent hearing and smell, and can track down things like a pro as a result! Her dog attitude makes her easy to work with!-
"Well I'm glad the class is feeling fairly laid back…." Tamashini gruffed slightly, taking a deep breath as she crossed more names off the attendance sheet. The teacher pulled her finger down the roll to the last few students and looked them over. "Kagami Magaki" she called.
"Here teacher." A girl stood up, grey hair, perfectly parted along the center and to the sides. Her tie is completely straight and down the middle above her decently sized chest and completely symmetrical uniform, tucked in neatly so not a thing is amiss. A hair quickly comes loose, drifting into her vision. She gritted her teeth for a moment, reaching up to brush the hair back into place and exhaling as if some stress had just pent up in her.
-Kagami Magaki. Quirk: Mirror! She can cause anything to get mirrored! Think you should raise your right arm, now you're raising your left!-
"Oga Mizuho!" Tamashini called, moving right along as she marked a firm line on the ledger to get Kagami signed in. A boy more towards the back stood up. His light blue hair, wavy and relaxed to his shoulders, and a toned swimmer body on his strong angled face. A fairly relaxed guy who also said he was present, plopping back down as he leaned back a bit. His tie was a bit loose, but nothing more than that. Shaking in his teacher's enthusiasm to get this over with it seemed, never one for the formalities of a situation.
-Oga Mizuho. Quirk: Water Wraith! He can control water! The more pure it is, the better control he has! So don't go thinking he can like, make you bleed all over or something...that'd be gross.-
"Futaba Fukuba!" Tamashini exclaimed next, moving to a blonde, curly haired girl. Her uniform was neatly pressed and clean. Her bright eyes shone as she stood and greeted the teacher as her skirt swished ever so slightly.
"Here teacher, it's wonderful to be here starting another school year full of learning!" she responded fully to her teacher's loud call out of her. Futaba sat back down, pulling the skirt under her legs, back straight and attention right at the board. Her notebooks out and ready for whatever might be sprung upon her for classes.
-Futaba Fukua. Quirk: Sharp Dressed Gal! Whatever clothes she wears she gets the abilities of! Since she's in a school uniform she has all the abilities of a good student. Fun fact, has the best grades in the class as a result!-
"Rakun Kaneya-" Tamashini began as suddenly the bell rang for the general assembly to start the new term. In a flash her hand clenched and the pencil she was using broke completely in two, shattering splinters on the paper beneath it. Her body tense and stiff from seemingly wasting the entire start on roll call before the usual gathering so principal Nezu could speak to the students and faculty.
"Wow, lucky! We got through the entire opening period on just roll call!" A sandy blonde haired boy chimes as everyone gets up and begins to shuffle their way out of the classroom of 2-A. He skipped out from his seat in the back by the window after his classmates, humming gently to himself.
-Rakun Kaneyama. Quirk: Lucky lad! Everything seems to go his way! If he uses it too much though he gets strong cases of bad luck!-
Tamashini stood there in silence, being the only one left in the room. She wondered why anything in the school couldn't just go smoothly and normally. She exhaled hard, dusting the attendance sheet off with her well manicured hand, crossing off the last name on the list. She turned and followed suit, exiting the classroom and shutting the door behind her.
She would follow her class down the hallway, bundled together with them as everyone was pouring out of their places of study. The voices of everyone's inner brains feeling to her as if they were whispers echoing around the walls. She actually preferred this, as a bundle of noises are easier to ignore than a few individual voices. It was a difficult ability to control, so finding ways to not focus on it was a big part of Tamashini's lifestyle.
It was then though she picked up on a bit of a shared voice, or idea perhaps. With the teachers filing out with all their students. She heard a wave of gratitude that they got a pretty normal teacher compared to someone who was scary or overly doting. The teacher felt some of her anxiety escape a long exhale while following the flow of people. A small smile pursed her lips, heightening her mood.
"Well...it was just attendance after all."
