Hi, I have had this idea locked in my head for a while. I hope you like it. Let me know what you think. This is for fan purpose only. Animaniacs and its characters belong to Warner Bros. and Steven Spielberg.
Yakko Warner hated waiting. He hated it more than he hated being told to be quiet or to eat more vegetables.
But lately, Yakko most certainly didn't mind waiting for the pretty Minerva Mink.
Each day, he waited for her to walk out of the dressing room and toss her platinum blonde hair over her shoulder. He waited for her to give a half smile when they passed each other on the set of Animaniacs. He waited for the right moment to finally ask her out on a date.
After all of that waiting, the right moment to ask out Minerva had come at last.
"Hellooo, Minerva!" Yakko howled when he approached her off set.
Minerva flinched at Yakko's brazen presence. She turned on her heels to see him. "Oh, hi," she greeted him flatly.
Yakko could barely hold himself up at the sight of her. His eyes ballooned with hearts and his arms sagged. His excitement was so heavy, he fell forward. When he picked himself up, he said, "If you're waiting for a star to fall, you got your wish!"
Minerva looked at him like she didn't know what to say. It was a good thing Yakko always knew what to say.
"So, can I take you out?"
"No," was all Minerva said.
Yakko laughed. "Don't get ahead of yourself, toots! I mean 'can I take you out' as in on a date," he said.
Minerva smirked and folded her arms. "A date with you?"
"No, Hugh Hefner! Of course a date with me!"
"Just imagine that: you take me to the park to get snow cones. We talk all night. We kiss and fall in love."
"Uhhhh…" Yakko's eyes widened in delight. He hadn't thought that far into it. "Sure! I like the way you think, toots!" Yakko applauded.
At that, Minerva laughed all the way down to her knees. It made Yakko feel proud. He loved making people laugh, but making Minerva laugh was like winning the jackpot at the casino. With how smooth things were already going, Yakko hoped he'd get to slide his quarter into a different kind of slot tonight.
"Okay! See you at seven this evening!" he said through a big, toothy grin and hurried back to his water tower.
When Yakko told his siblings, Wakko and Dot, about his big date with Minerva Mink, they felt inclined to help him get ready. Despite being a smooth talker with the ladies, he had never actually gotten one to say yes to a date with him before. Dot and Wakko knew how important this was to their big brother. They had to help him make an impression.
While Yakko gave his underarms a speedy sniff to determine whether he could go one more day without showering, Dot and Wakko examined Yakko's selection of clothes. They shoveled out lots of clothes from the drawer, tossing them over their shoulders, and creating a pile.
"This shirt!" Dot exclaimed and then held up a button up shirt with black and green vertical stripes to Yakko's collar bone.
"No!" Wakko objected. "These pants!" He held a baggy pair of black pants with a pattern of purple stars scattered all over the legs to Yakko's waist.
"No way! What do you know about style?" Dot barked at Wakko.
"I know it's something you need to work on," Wakko snarked.
"Why I oughta-"
"I have an idea!" Yakko intervened. "I'll wear both the shirt and the pants!"
"Okay!" Dot and Wakko accepted.
Yakko hurried to get dressed and then came back to look at himself in the mirror. He felt very stylish and thought his siblings did excellent work.
Next, Yakko thought bringing Minerva a nice gift would be a nice gesture.
"A bouquet of flowers!" Dot suggested.
"No! Chocolates!" Wakko countered.
Yakko was running out of time and didn't want to listen to any more arguing. Then, a light bulb illuminated over his head. He had an idea!
"A bouquet of chocolate!" Yakko cried. He rolled some wrapping paper into a funnel and loaded it with candy bars.
Dot and Wakko looked pleased that Yakko found a way to use both of their suggestions.
It was now time for Yakko to get going, but he couldn't leave just before loading his pants with extra bologna slices for good luck.
When he got to the park he sat down on a bench visible for Minerva to have no trouble spotting him. Yakko held up his wrist to look at his watch. It was seven o'clock but all he saw was that his hands were shaking. He took deep breaths to extinguish the fire of excitement he was feeling inside. Soon the wait for one of the most beautiful girls he knew would be over.
As Yakko waited on the bench, he closed his eyes and saw himself presenting Minerva with the bouquet of chocolates.
"Oh, Yakko! For me? How sweet of you," Minerva would say.
And then Yakko would chuckle and reply, "Well, a bouquet of chocolate isn't the only thing sweet of me, toots!"
Yakko opened his eyes again to watch the people meander the park freely and under no compulsion of time. He tried not to check the time too much, but when it felt like a long moment had passed, his eyes darted down to his wrist again.
7:37.
It was getting late. Where could she be? Yakko tried not to worry too much. It must take time to look as good as Minerva Mink. Maybe perfecting her makeup ran her behind?
But even so, the snow cone stand would be closing soon, and Yakko wanted to make sure he met Minerva's requests. He decided to walk to the stand and order two cherry snow cones. He hoped they wouldn't melt before Minerva made it.
8:17.
It was dark now and the people meandering the park had now gone home. Still holding the cones in his shaking hands, Yakko had no way to catch his tears so they fell freely and mixed with the snow cone syrup that had streamed into a puddle on his lap.
Minerva wasn't coming and Yakko had waited all this time for her. He tossed the running snow cones along with the bouquet into a trash can and slugged home. When he walked through the front door, his sibs darted towards him.
Yakko tried to look confident. He didn't have the heart to tell them what a big loser he was.
"How did it go!?" Dot asked.
"Oh, um….it went great. I just think it's best that Minerva and I remain costars," was all Yakko could manage without a voice crack.
"That's too bad," Wakko said through a pout. "You don't have Minerva and you don't have any more chocolate."
Yakko could feel his eyes bubbling up with tears again. He sprinted to the bathroom before any tears could fall. He turned on the faucet and this time he took a shower without hesitation.
When morning came, Yakko was surprisingly in a better mood. He cried all night long, but it wasn't until he ran out of tears that he realized Minerva probably had a reasonable explanation for standing him up.
'Maybe she got too nervous and bailed,' Yakko thought.
Yakko approached Minerva after filming later that day. He had a friendly smile on his face.
"Hi, Minerva!"
But Minerva grimaced at the site of Yakko. She folded her arms and turned her whole back to him. Yakko suddenly became angry. His rage ignited in him like fire and this time taking a deep breath wouldn't extinguish the combustion.
"Can you at least spare me a minute to talk about why you wasted my time yesterday?" Yakko said through his clenched teeth.
Minerva turned slightly to look at Yakko through the corner of her eye. She sniggered through her fingers.
"You poor thing. You actually thought I would go on a date with you? Sounds like you wasted your own time."
"But you said-"
"No!" Minerva aggressively twisted her whole body to face Yakko, thrusting her finger in his face. "I never said, 'Yes, Yakko! I'd love to lower my standards and subject myself to a horrible date with a loser like you!'"
Yakko looked down to his feet in shame. For the first time in his life, he didn't know what to say.
"And even if I had gone on that date, what would I have gained?" Minerva didn't let Yakko answer that. Instead, she flipped her hair in her usual, confident manner, and walked away.
For a moment, Yakko couldn't move. But he wasn't going to cry. Whatever Minerva wants, Minerva gets. If making Yakko look like a fool was what Minerva wanted, then he'd fulfill that.
Yakko shoved an arm deep into his slacks and rummaged around until he found a megaphone! He turned over a nearby bucket and stepped on top of it.
"Everyone! Could I have your attention please?" Yakko called out.
The cast of Animaniacs curiously walked over to hear what Yakko had to say. Dot and Wakko came to Yakko's side, not sure what was going on but ready to follow their brother's lead as always. Minerva kept at a distance but still listened.
"It seems I fell from the stupid tree and hit too many branches," Yakko began.
There was a buzzing of low chuckling.
Yakko continued. "I asked Minerva Mink out on a date yesterday! Can you believe it?"
Everyone applauded Yakko except Minerva who was just giving him her worst look.
"Well, I waited and waited and to my surprise she didn't show up because, guess what? She never actually agreed to go on a date with me in the first place."
Everyone gasped and turned to look at Minerva. She still had her arms folded and was rolling her eyes.
"Joke's on me, am I right? But don't worry, toots. You at least gave me some new material for my next stand up."
"Whatever, loser!" Minerva scoffed. She threw up a hand and walked away.
Everyone applauded for Yakko while Dot and Wakko threw their arms around his waist to hug him. Deep down, Yakko was still quite hurt, but he knew he'd feel better sooner or later. He'd just have to wait.
