Chapter 1: First Day

Nessie's POV

"Wake up Nessie! Wake up!"

I groaned and rolled over. I just wanted to go back to sleep. "Oh no you don't! It's the first day of school and I do not want to be late!"

"Go away," I mouthed at my annoying sister.

"No it is the first day of our Junior year and I do not want to be late,"

High School. My own personal version of hell as I called it. Summer break had been a break from the torture I'd been subjected to on a daily basis from Stacy and her inner circle of friends. They picked on a lot of kids but I was their favorite target. The freak of nature as they'd so often call me.

"Come on Nessie," my sister kept pushing my body in hopes of getting a response. There was no discouraging Lucy when she wanted something badly enough.

"Go away," I said again.

"Get up first and then I will leave you alone,"

I sighed and sat up in bed. "Happy now?" I asked her in a very sarcastic tone of voice.

"Very,"

"Why can't you just get school on you own?"

She rolled her eyes. "First of all because we both need to get to school. Second of all you're the only one who has a driver's license. Dad never got a chance to-" a look of sadness appeared on her face. We hadn't spoken much about our parents since they died in a car accident last May. Apparently they'd driven off a bridge. The police had ruled it a suicide but I didn't believe it for a second. My parents weren't suicidal. Something else happened that day.

Losing them hurt like hell. Even though they weren't our biological parents we still loved them. I was about five years old when I was adopted. I couldn't remember my real family but that didn't matter.

My parents couldn't have kids so they adopted all of us. Four in total. My eldest brother Michael who turned 18 this Summer. My sister Lucy and I who were both 16 years old. Then there was our youngest brother David who was only 8 years old.

Michael left for college this past Summer. He'd happily traded in the cold Alaskan climate for the much warmer weather in Florida.

So it was just Lucy, David, and I taking care of ourselves. Our brother had found a full time job in Florida and was sending us as much money as he could afford to do so. It wasn't enough though. My sister and I had been looking for part time jobs to help but nobody was hiring.

Why didn't we just leave for Florida with our brother? Because it was way too expensive. The house we lived in now was already paid off. It made no sense to go rent a place when we could live somewhere for free. As long as the government didn't find out that three underage minors were living alone everything would be fine.

I got out of bed very reluctantly. I got dressed and then went to the kitchen to make myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast. Lucy and David were already eating breakfast.

I looked at the clock and realized we were running late. I didn't even finish eating my sandwich. We had barely enough time to drop off my brother at his school.

"You know if you hadn't taken your sweet ass time getting out of bed this morning we wouldn't be running late," my sister remarked snidely. She was lucky that I was driving if not I would have punched her. Okay maybe not.

"We won't be late," I pressed my foot down on the gas and sped up. I got us there just in time. We weren't the first to arrive in the parking lot but we weren't the last to arrive either.

I quickly walked to my first class while Lucy went to hers. As much as I disliked school I had already memorized my schedule for the year.

I'd just taken a seat in my first period Biology class when I heard a guy ask "Is this seat taken?"

I looked up from my phone to see a pale boy with bronze hair and golden eyes looking down at me. He seemed oddly familiar. He smiled a crooked smile at me.

"Um no this seat is not taken. You can sit here," It's not like anyone would want to sit next to me. The freak who'd just lost her parents three months ago.

The boy sat next to me and watched me curiously. I figured I should make conversation with him.

"You must be new here. I don't think we've met before. I'm Renesmee,"

He smiled again. "I'm Edward Cullen and my siblings and I are new here. Our family just moved here,"

It was when I shook his ice cold hand that I realized why he seemed so familiar. Pale skin and golden eyes. He reminded me of the Denali clan.

The Denali clan as my siblings and I liked to call were a family consisting of five members Tanya, Kate, Carmen, Garrett, and Eleazar. We'd first met them when we moved to Alaska five years ago.

I still remembered it vividly. I was was walking around the woods chasing after Pokémon in Pokémon Go. I hadn't paid much attention to where I was going. When I looked up from my phone I realized that I had no idea where I was. I had no idea how to get back.

I began to panic and I screamed for help.

"Are you lost girl?"

My heart just about jumped out of my chest. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I saw the woman who was approaching me. She was so beautiful that I was sure she was an angel.

"What's your-" she stopped midsentence. She froze. She was as still as a statue. "It can't be,"

"It can't be what?"

"Nothing. What is your name?"

"Renesmee. Who are you?" I asked the extremely beautiful woman.

"I'm Tanya,"

"Can you help me Tanya? I'm lost,"

That was my family's friendship with the Denali clan began. They were the kindest people I had ever met. My siblings and I would visit them nearly every week or they'd visit us. Lucy and I loved to go shopping with Tanya and Kate especially.

Then about two weeks ago the Denalis started to avoid us like the plague. Every time I would call they would send my calls straight to voice-mail. Kate only answered once and that was just to tell me not to come visit them under any circumstance.

This was a family I'd go visit twice, sometimes even three times a week for the past five years. Now they wanted nothing to do with me at all. It didn't make any sense at all. Had I done something to offend them?

I took a deep breath. I looked at Edward and was startled to see that his eyes had turned black. He was gripping the table hard. His teeth were bared like an angry animal ready to attack.
