Chapter 12: Baby News
"You two are going to have a what?" Edward repeated. He was way too calm. I didn't know if to answer him or stay quiet.
I decided that answering might be the better idea. "I'm pregnant with a baby boy. Carlisle just confirmed it this morning. Jacob is the father and-"
Oh shit. Oh holy crap. Edward's murderous gaze silenced me instantly. I looked at Jacob's face for any sign of fear. He looked a little scared.
"You-"
"Edward don't," Bella grabbed Edward and pulled him back. "Don't do anything that you're going to regret,"
"I'm not going to do anything I won't regret," he seethed angrily. "He got her pregnant!"
"Um excuse me but it's not just Jacob's fault that I'm pregnant. You do know that it takes two people to people to make a baby right? It's just as much my fault as it his-"
"If he hadn't seduced you-"
"Seduced me?" I laughed. "He didn't seduce me. It was the other way around actually. I seduced him,"
Edward looked like he was ready to kill me right about now. When will I learn to keep my mouth shut? Probably never because I never learn my lesson.
I felt someone pulling on me gently. It was Alice. I'd forgotten that she was there. "You better leave now Nessie. Trust me,"
All of my better instincts were telling me to listen to her. So I didn't fight her as she led me out of the house. "Where are we going?" I asked her.
"Away from here. You don't want to be anywhere near Edward when he gets angry,"
I still had absolutely no idea where Alice was taking me until the mall came into view. Of course...shopping. Why wasn't I surprised? Leave it to Alice to find an excuse to go shopping. As if she ever needed an excuse to go to the mall.
Alice was very enthusiastic about my baby and shopping for maternity clothes. Who knew that Prada made maternity clothing? Leave it to Alice to find the most fashionable and most expensive maternity clothing that existed.
I almost forgot about Edward's strange reaction to my news. Almost. I couldn't figure out why he cared so much that I was pregnant. It was mind boggling.
"Come on Nessie it's time to go to the next store,"
I sighed. "Aren't we done yet? Didn't you say that was the last store here that had maternity clothing?"
"The next store isn't for you. It's for the baby. Your baby will need clothes also,"
"and you do realize the baby won't be born for awhile still, right?"
She rolled her eyes at me. "It's never too early to start shopping. So stop trying to ruin my fun,"
"Alice there is no need to go shopping for baby clothes. I can buy cheap baby clothing at Target or Walmart. There is no need to go spend an excessive amount of money on clothes that he will just outgrow right away,"
She looked at me as if I'd just said something that was extremely offensive. "No baby of yours is going to be seen wearing something cheap. Watch he will be the most fashionable newborn baby anyone has ever seen,"
"and apparently wearing the most expensive baby clothes,"
"Exactly!" she said way too enthusiastically. "So stop trying to fight me on this because trust me when I say you're not going to win this fight,"
I shook my head in disbelief. "Fine," how is it possible that someone as tiny as Alice could be so irritating?
"What's wrong?" she asked intuitively.
"I guess I'm just not comfortable with all of this. That's all,"
"What are you not comfortable with?" she asked me worriedly. Irritating or not she was a good friend to me. Probably the best friend I ever had.
"With this,"
I gestured toward all the expensive designer clothing that she'd already bought for me.
"With people spending an absurd amount of money on me at once. I grew up in a very different family. We weren't rich by any means. My family just didn't spend money like this. I'd always been taught the importance of saving money and not spending it when you don't have to. Hell we were on government assistance for awhile because we didn't have enough money to get by. Yet you and you're family are different. You spend money without even giving it a second thought. Your lifestyle is just so foreign to me and I'm still having a hard time getting used to it. I'm not sure if I can,"
"I'm sorry Nessie," she said. "Sometimes I forget this all new to you. But I'm sure you will get used to it eventually,"
"I'm not so sure about that. Growing up having little to suddenly having everything isn't a very easy transition. My mindset is just too set in stone," I answered. "But I won't stop you from having your fun,"
"Thank you," she responded happily. "Now come on,"
Thankfully it was only after an hour that Alice decided that it was okay for us to leave. Edward wasn't home when we returned home. That was good because I didn't think I could deal with an angry Edward again. Although I was burning with the desire to find out why it bothered him so much that I was pregnant.
I went to my room and closed the door. A nap sounded heavenly right now. When I woke up a little over two hours l thought a walk sounded nice. Jacob wanted to go with me but oddly enough what I wanted was just to be alone for awhile.
I walked into town which was only a few miles away from the house. I stopped at the first bookstore that I saw and ended up buying books about pregnancy and what to expect. A far cry from the usual fantasy and science fiction books that I bought.
"Hey there sweetie," I heard a guy wolf whistle. I glanced behind me quickly and saw four guys who looked like they were only a few years older than I was. I felt a shiver run down my spine.
I picked up the pace hoping I could lose these guys. "Hey where do you think you're going!" one of the men had quickly caught up to me and tried to grab me. I quickly swung my bag of books at his head and ran as fast as I could.
I took a wrong turn and quickly found myself trapped in a dead end. The four men had caught up to me. Even the one I thought I had incapacitated. They were blocking my only exit. I had nowhere to run.
I swung my bag at the first guy who approached me and this time I missed. He grabbed the bag and ripped it out of my hands. He quickly tossed it aside. "Oh this is going to be fun," he grabbed me and slammed my body against the wall. "Help!" I screamed hoping that someone would hear me.
The other men had caught up by this time. One had my arms and legs pinned to the wall so I couldn't fight. Another started removing my clothes.
I screamed for help again. Then something very strange happened. I could actually feel my body getting physically stronger. I hit one guy as hard as I could and he tumbled backwards.
"Let her go!" I heard a familiar voice scream. It was Edward. Relief flooded through me.
I ran to him and to my surprise I threw my arms around him. It was then that I realized I was crying. "Those men they tried to attack me! They tried to-they tried to-" I couldn't even say the words.
"I know. Get in the car right now. I will deal with them. No one even thinks about hurting my daughter and lives to talk about it!" he shouted as he left me behind.
What did he just say?
