[Hogwarts speaking to different characters in the story]
Iggy's ChangesOn a Friday night in January when Harry went to change into pyjamas for bed, Iggy told him, [Put me in your pocket tonight.]
Harry did as his cloak asked without thinking about it and when the boy was in bed with the curtains pulled around to hold in the heat, Iggy asked to be spread across Harry's body underneath the sheet.
[You're going to be extra cover? It's awfully cold and you're going to be a blanket?] asked the boy with a snicker.
Iggy giggled and replied, [Yes, something like that.]
Harry complied and the cloak waited for the boy to fall asleep naturally before it began pulling magic from Hogwarts and filling the area around the bed with a barrier to prevent sound from escaping or anyone from noticing what was happening. Tonight, Iggy and Hogwarts would pry the piece of hell-bound Thomas Marvolo Riddle from the scar on the forehead of harry James Potter.
[I have a container ready,] Hogwarts announced, and a small pottery jar with a stopper appeared in Iggy's consciousness as the two entities pulled the first tendrils of the Dark Lord's shrivelled soul piece from the boy's scar. [It is buried underneath a tonne of Hippogriff dung from four hundred years ago when Clifton Faversham bred the creatures during his tenure as the professor for magical creatures.]
[Buried and forgotten, eh?] asked Iggy as he fought with the angry soul.
Pushing more of her magic into Iggy's battle, Hogwarts added, [With enough Draught of Living Death potion in the jar to put Riddle to sleep forever.]
Straining against the last hold the piece of tattered soul held on Potter's magical core, Iggy managed to quip, [As always, your devious nature will appear when no one expects it.]
[Compliments will get you no…] Hogwarts paused and then exclaimed, [That's it! You've got him now!]
Breaking the last bond between the sliver of the Dark Lord's soul piece and Harry Potter, Iggy and Hogwarts smashed it with their magics. They fed the sliver of the despicable wizard into the jar. The soul piece howled as it was forced into another container and then 'screamed' louder to find his prison to be another creation of a 'Potter' was an additional insult. But the Draught of Living Deathpotion spread through the sliver of soul and it fell silent, lost forever underneath hardened Hippogriff sh$t.
With its magic depleted after the effort to move the soul shard, Iggy simply wrapped itself around the Peverell heir and slept for a month. When Harry woke the next morning, he 'felt' that Iggy was close by so he didn't worry about the cloak but showered and dressed normally before going to breakfast and his classes.
In the DADA class, for the first time, Harry realized that he could see the board clearly and that his head did not ache whenever he looked at Professor Quirrell. But rather than share the information with Hermione, Neville or his erstwhile friend, Ron Weasley, he remained silent.
Late in the afternoon, Harry realized that unless he asked a question of Professor McGonagall during transfiguration class, she had ignored him. At supper, he noticed that Headmaster 'Dumblemore' (snicker) did not even glance in his direction during the entire meal. And Ron concentrated on his meal while talking to Seamus about the latest news of quidditch matches around Britain.
Harry's conversations with Neville about herbology and Hermione about homework seemed perfectly normal. In the lines of students leaving the Great Hall after eating, Harry found that Draco Malfoy ignored him and seemed anxious to get to a detention. But the hateful Slytherin boy said nothing about mudbloods, half-bloods or 'ghastly ends' that would be arranged by his father.
That night, Harry sought out Ron for a chess match and his friend could 'see' him while they played and talked about quidditch, but immediately forgot about Harry Potter after the game ended.
In February, one night while Harry slept, Iggy finally awoke and immediately began checking over the sleeping boy. The cloak was pleased to find that many of the scars and health issues in the boy's body had been cured by magic as his cloak recovered from removing the soul shard. Harry was growing taller and gaining weight.
[This summer, we'll get you some proper clothes and robes before next year,] Iggy decided. He snickered, [I do pretty good work.]
[Wait a minute! You're not going to claim all the credit, are you?] demanded Hogwarts. [That's my magic that you've been sucking up for the last two fortnights and then pumping into the Peverell heir.]
[No, ma'am,] Iggy admitted as he slowly returned to his form as a cloak laid across his wizard, who slept safely in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
In the morning, Harry was pleased to find Iggy back in cloak form and he wrapped the comforting feel of the cloak over his shoulders once again.
As the last winter month passed, Professor Sprout found herself wishing Potter and Longbottom had been sorted into her house–both boys needed a positive parental figure here at school and as usual Minerva was too busy with all her duties as deputy to give 'any' student her attention.
'Maybe it is best that the Gryffindors are left to swim on their own. Percy Weasley is certainly filling the parent role for his own siblings and all the other kids in the dorm.' She was determined that her badger prefects would help with the Gryffindor kids and would approach Flitwick for help – his fifth year prefects were fair and active.
At the staff meeting at the end of the winter term, Pomona forewent all praise for Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter. She intended for their grades to reflect their achievements and not bring them to the attention of McGonagall, Snape or Dumbledore. To her surprize, Flitwick did not mention either boy in his review. Professor Pretzel was tired – she spent every free minute helping her seventh-year students prepare for their NEWETTs.
And Dumbledore did not ask about Harry Potter. At the end of the autumn term, Dumbledore spent over fifteen minutes querying every professor about the boy's performance. And three months later, the boy was not a subject of discussion. This pleased Professor Sprout enormously.
There were few good things that anyone would say about Professor Quirrell's instruction in the DADA classroom. The man's stutter had grown worse with each month, his behaviour was erratic and he never socialized with the other staff or the students. But without his headaches after the DADA class, Harry began working on the spells for some shields and attacks with Neville, Hermione and Ron (when he could see Harry).
During the spring months, Harry noticed that 'Dumblemore' once again hinted about a hidden treasure in the castle that was in danger of being stolen by someone evil.
[Iggy, who is Dumblemore hinting at as 'evil'?] asked Harry. [Does he mean Snape?]
The cloak was slow to answer, but finally said, [Snape is evil and stupid but I don't think he will be the one trying to break into the headmaster's treasure room.]
[Why does the headmaster have something valuable hidden here?] Harry asked, his face concentrating on his own thoughts. [From what you tell me and everyone else says, Gringotts would be a much safer place for something valuable.]
[Gringotts is set up for protecting valuable things like jewellery and gold. Hogwarts is supposed to protect children who are much more valuable than any 'things',] explained Iggy.
Listening to the conversation, Hogwarts agreed but took no further actions. If Quirrell attempted to steal the treasure, she had contingencies in place. If he attempted to touch any child, her magic would touch him up proper and hard. If he walked out the front door and apparated away, she would let him go but after the last day of class, the wizard and his parasite would never be allowed to cross the wards again. Hogwarts mused, [And if 'Dumblemore' objects, I shall expel his ancient a$$ as well.]
The castle was determined that the stone would be returned to someone responsible this summer – the elves in the kitchens enjoyed having walls and floors composed of stone but when the flatware and dishes all turned to gold, Hogwarts moved the stone to the Room of Requirement. If the flotsam and jetsam of a thousand years was transformed to gold, she could help many students and shore up her staff once Dumblemore was out of the way.
No student from any of the four houses seemed interested in the mystery that Dumbledore continued to hint at being in the castle. This caused the headmaster quite a bit of concern–how could he get Harry Potter into confrontation with the Dark Lord if he could not find the boy and get him interested in the mystery of the hidden treasure.
Hermione Granger listened to several of the clues and discussed them with Ron who dismissed her worries. Weasley said, "Granger, Dumbledore is the greatest wizard who ever lived. No one can get through his protections unless he wants them to. Forget about it…"
In a separate discussion with Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter, Hermione found two wizards who were concerned and listened.
"If the treasure is this Sorcerer's Stone, why is it here?" asked Harry. Knowing there'd be a discussion with Iggy later, Harry asked very question he could imagine to get all of Hermione's information.
There were no further discussions after that initial talk until Harry, Neville and Hermione went to visit Hagrid. In the groundskeeper's hut, the three students found the half giant with a giant egg that he was trying to hatch.
"Hagrid how are you going to deal with a dragon?" asked Neville.
"It'll be fine," the half-giant replied. "I can raise a little dragon without any problem."
Hermione replied, "But Hagrid, it won't be small for long. It'll grow up and be very large by summer. How can you feed it or keep it from setting everything on fire?"
"I hadn't thought of that…" the half-giant admitted.
"What are we going to do?" asked Harry.
Outside the cabin, Draco Malfoy listened carefully to the conversation inside the cabin – he could hear Granger, Potter, and Longbottom speaking with the idiot half-breed about his dragon egg that he was going to hatch here on school grounds. Draco would reveal this secret and the ramifications of the scandal would bring about the downfall of Albus Dumbledore. Then the Malfoy family would be known in magical Britain as the greatest power in the kingdom.
[Iggy.]
[Yes, Harry?]
The boy struggled for a moment before he asked, [Is there any way that we can help Hagrid?]
[Why do you want to help the half-giant? He's no power and the only person who protects him is Dumblemore.]
Embarrassed for Hagrid's position to be so described and disappointed in Iggy's snobby attitude, Harry spoke for the first time with some anger in his voice directed at the entity in his magical cloak, saying, [Rubeus Hagrid is the first person to ever wish me 'Happy Birthday'. He is first person to ever–ever–give me a birthday present. Do not ever speak of Hagrid as though he is less than worthy of my friendship and your protection! Do you understand me, Iggy?]
The cloak was silent and Harry demanded that the cloak spend the night in his trunk and not speak to him again that night.
Disturbed by the argument, Hogwarts reached out to both the young wizard and the cloak with some comfort and in the morning, she made certain the cloak was laid out with Harry's robes for the day.
[How'd you get here?] asked Harry as he picked up the cloak after dressing.
Iggy cleared his throat and said, [Heir Peverell, I apologise for speaking about your friend in that manner last evening. Hogwarts threw sparks at me for a half hour while lecturing me on how good and honest Hagrid is, how he would fight to protect any child, and how I was lucky to not be used as the diaper for the dragon that's about to hatch.]
"I'm sorry too," Harry whispered as the cloak settled around him once again, making him vanish from the sight of anyone who wished him ill.
That afternoon, during Quidditch practice with Harry focused on finding the practice snitch while Fred and George threw multiple bludgers at him, Iggy put his magic to work and made the bludgers unable to see Harry. The balls flew high and wide, never getting close to the Seeker casually flying atop the pitch.
Noticing the difference, Harry asked, [What did you do?]
[Not going to let a ball travelling faster than a hippogriff chasing after his supper get anywhere near to you! Not going to discuss. You are too valuable to me to let anything happen to you!] the cloak entity replied with a great deal of cheek.
"Thanks!" Harry exclaimed aloud just before he saw the snitch and dived for it. In his mind Iggy screamed with laughter during the entire dive; the cloak enjoyed the freedom of flying as much as Heir Peverell.
That night after closing the curtains around his bed, Harry asked, [Iggy, maybe we should work on some spells to fight wizards if needed. I don't think Hogwarts is the safe place that Dumblemore keeps telling me and everyone else that it is.]
The two of them reviewed the spells that Harry had learned and Iggy showed the boy how to put more power into the spells.
[And as you grow older and stronger, the spells with get stronger too.]
Harry thought for a moment and then asked, [What about attacking spells? Something that will let me fight back.]
[We could try light and fire,] said Iggy.
[Fire,] Harry replied. [Fire changes the structure of an item into carbon. I remember from primary school science about that change. We burned some paper and talked about how it could never be paper again. If you are burned up, there's no spell that can reverse that.]
Iggy agreed to follow Harry's direction and they spent an hour talking about fire, how it started and how it changed things as it burned. Iggy shared a few memoires of fires in fireplaces for the last five hundred years and the few times he'd seen entire buildings engulfed in flames.
[I need a spell that is silent and easy to start but not to stop,] Harry replied. Iggy seemed reluctant to reply but eventually explained about the terrible 'fiend fire' spell.
Confused, Harry asked, [The spell creates a fire that is almost sentient–something like you?]
[I am not some simple wizard's spell!] Iggy insisted.
Harry grinned. [Iggy, there is nothing simple about you but you are sentient and you are an object.]
[I am your object that is true,] Iggy agreed. After a few more moments, the cloak instructed its boy to get some sleep while he thought about how to start a hot fire that could burn wizards, rocks or magic but not get out of control.
Once the egg hatched and Hagrid tried to care for Norbert in his wooden hut, Hermione and Neville talked to Ron about his brother Charlie who worked at a dragon preserve in Rumania. Harry talked to Percy and confirmed the information when Ron couldn't see Harry enough to talk to him about his brother who worked with dragons. After an exchange of letters, Charlie agreed to fly to Hogwarts with a couple of the other dragon handlers and collect the baby dragon.
Draco Malfoy kept a close eye on Hagrid, Neville Longbottom and the mudblood Granger. No matter how hard he tried, he could not find Harry Potter though he discovered that his head began to ache when he tried to find Potter.
The night came in early May when the dragon handlers would fly into Scotland and meet the students at the top of the astronomy tower with the baby dragon. Hermione, Neville, Harry and Ron manhandled the small dragon to the top of the tower with multiple wingardium leviosa charms and calming spells for the curious dragon.
Once he saw that Granger, Longbottom and Weasley were bringing the dragon into the school, Draco ran to find Professor Snape. However, Severus refused to have anything to do with Draco's complaint.
"But professor, we can get Potter and his friends expelled!" declared Draco who felt a headache begin. Snape slammed the door of his room and snapped his fingers to plunge the room into darkness–perhaps quick action could prevent the headache he feared from hearing the word 'Potter'.
Ignoring his own headache, Draco made his way to Professor McGonagall's quarters but the deputy headmistress was patrolling the halls and came across Malfoy before he began the climb to the Gryffindor tower. The breathless boy told his tale of a dragon egg in Hagrid's hut, the baby dragon setting fire to everything there, and the Gryffindors attempting to move the little dragon to the top of the astronomy tower.
Incredulous, Minerva asked, "And these students are doing what?"
"They have a baby dragon that they are trying to deliver to Weasley's brother who works in a dragon preserve somewhere in Siberia or Albania…" Draco explained for the second time.
"Who are these Gryffindors?"
"Ron Weasley, Granger and Neville Longbottom, and… the other one."
"Which one?" she growled, much like an angry cat.
"Harry Potter," muttered Draco and the Slytherin was gratified to see Professor McGonagall's eyes narrow as her mind was struck with headache pain such as pounded in his own head.
"Come with me!" McGonagall commanded and Draco hurried along behind her as they began the climb to the tower. As she passed an alcove where a disillusioned Dumbledore waited, he cast a specific compulsion on her to assign a particularly inappropriate detention to the miscreants once she caught them.
Quietly returning down the stairs from the astronomy tower where Charlie Weasley and the other dragon handlers had placed the little dragon into a deep sleep and then flew away with her in the night sky, Neville, Hermione, Ron and Harry checked around corners for professors and prefects. At the final staircase before the Gryffindor porthole, they were caught by Professor McGonagall who lectured them for thirty minutes about irresponsible behaviour.
Then she announced, "And that'll be a detention with Hagrid to be served in the Forbidden Forest tomorrow night. And fifty points from Granger, fifty from Longbottom and fifty from Weasley… And you Malfoy, that'll be forty points and you'll attend the detention with the others."
"What!" shouted all the children.
"What about Potter?" demanded Ron.
"Professor? I am the one who told you about them being out after hours!" declared Malfoy.
"You are out after curfew Mr. Malfoy. The detention and points stand!"
"Yeah, but what about Harry Potter?" screamed Ron just before a terrible headache struck him, Draco and McGonagall.
"Return to your dorms! Now!" shouted McGonagall.
At the porthole into Gryffindor, Harry appeared and helped the others inside. Ron looked around and said, "Next time I see Potter, I'm going to blast him into the walls and then throw him off the side of the nearest staircase!"
Neville, Harry and Hermione exchanged glances before Ron stomped up the stairs, mumbling about calling his mum on the floo.
Hermione frowned and asked, "Harry, why can't Ron see you?"
"Lack of common sense?" suggested Neville. "According to you and Harry, that's one thing wizards lack when compared to muggles."
"That doesn't explain why Ron and Draco kept talking about Harry like he wasn't there," insisted the muggleborn witch who didn't like not having all the answers.
Harry said, "Hermione, let it go. No harm no fowl. And you know I'll go with your guys tomorrow night. No way I'd let you go into the Forbidden Forest without me."
Suddenly, Hermione's eyes got huge and her mouth dropped open before she shouted, "I got a detention! I lost fifty points! Now I'll never be head girl!"
