Amity...Still wasn't sure what to think about the recent events of Eclipse Lake. The whole thing ended with a partial victory for both sides, and both Luz and Eda had high hopes for the titans blood on the glove. It wasn't much, but they thought it would be enough for a temporary portal, at least. And now that Luz had recovered from the common mold, the residents and friends of the Owl House were already working on said portal.
Amity was happy about this, sure, but one thing kept bugging her. The Golden Guard. A big part of her was still furious at him for his deceit, manipulation, and most of all, his threatening of Luz. No one threatened her awesome girlfriend.
On the other hand though, she couldn't help but feel...bad...for the Golden Guard. As angry as Amity was at him, he really had seemed sorry for taking the key. He'd seemed so desperate back there; so terrified of what might happen if he failed. Not to mention the concern she felt for his breakdown earlier. He -Luz said his name was Hunter- definitely wasn't okay. Granted, most people in the emperor's coven probably weren't okay, but he couldn't have been much older than her. He was just a teenager...A kid...He was too young to be around the pressures of being in that coven-
No. No. Amity wasn't going to feel sorry for that jerk. Not yet anyway. Not until he begged forgiveness for all the crap he pulled back there. She tried to give him a chance in that cave, and look where that led. Even if she did want to try to help him again, she wasn't sure he'd accept the help.
"Amity! Hey! How's my awesome girlfriend?!" Luz exclaimed as Amity walked through the door of the Owl House. The Blight found herself quickly pulled into a tight hug.
Amity blushed and smiled at Luz. "Hey Luz. How's the-" she cut off her sentence as she watched something small and red barrel in through the still-open doorway.
"Amity? Hello-o-o, earth to Amity," Luz said, waving a hand in front of her face. "You okay? You kind of stopped in the middle of your-oh." She saw it too. The two girls were suddenly faced with a frantic looking cardinal. A red cardinal. A palisman. And they both knew who's palisman it was.
"Isn't that-" Amity started to say, raising an eyebrow.
"Lil' Rascal? What are you doing here?" Luz questioned, holding her hand out for the palisman to land on, which it did.
"That's the Golden Guard's palisman. Does that mean…" Amity's eyes widened and she quickly ran outside, looking in every direction in a hurry to see if the Golden Guard was approaching the house. If his palisman was here, surely he would be too...But why was he here? He already had the key, he'd have no reason to attack them now!
There was no sign of him though. No sign that the Golden Guard was here. It seemed to be that the cardinal came alone.
"Hooty?" Amity called back as she walked back inside the house. "Make sure no one's hiding around here. Keep any new faces away."
"Aye aye captain!" Hooty replied eagerly. The door slammed, and through the window, Amity could see the house demon looking everywhere someone could hide.
Lil' rascal started chirping like mad, fluttering his wings as if trying to make a point. Luz frowned. 'Sorry buddy, but I don't know what you're trying to tell me." More frantic chirping. Amity didn't think it was possible for a bird to look anxious, but it certainly did.
Luz turned to Amity and shrugged, the frown still on her face. "I don't know what he wants. It's kinda weird that he's even here right now, considering his witch is currently our enemy and all that. Hmm…" The human thought for a few seconds, and suddenly her eyes widened. "Is something wrong with Hunter? Is he in trouble? Does he need our help? Is that it?"
The tiny palisman nodded.
"Wow, wow, wow, slow down," Amity said, a confused look on her face. "Even if the Golden Guard does need help for whatever reason, why would he send his palisman to us for help? He has to know that we can't trust him after that stunt he pulled."
Luz turned back to Lil' Rascal. "I don't know? Why would you, little guy?"
More chirping. A few more seconds passed and Luz had a second realization. She glanced at Amity. The human suddenly looked very worried. "What if...It's because Hunter doesn't know Lil' Rascal is here."
Amity studied the bird. "If that's the case…"
"Then things could be pretty bad for him right now." Luz bit her lip. "What should we do? I know you don't exactly trust him, or-or even like him, but what if we're the only people who can help him right now? I only spoke to him a little, but it sounded like he doesn't have very many friends back at the emperor's castle."
Amity didn't like where this was headed. Not one bit. But she knew that her girlfriend had a point. "After what he did, helping him is the very last thing I want to do right now…"
"Amity-" Luz started, her brows furrowed.
Amity held up a hand. "But I think you're right. I saw how he was acting back in that cave. He was so worried that Kikimora would capture him-I think you're right in saying he doesn't have very many friends, if any, at that castle. He may be our enemy, but if he needs our help…" She paused for a moment. Luz's goodness really was rubbing off on her, huh? She wouldn't have even considered this a few months ago. "...I'll help."
Luz suddenly grinned and hugged Amity again. "Great! Lil' Rascal, can you lead the way?"
The red cardinal chirped and nodded. He flew over to the door, waiting expectantly for them to follow.
Luz and Amity looked at each other. Though they both just agreed to this, neither looked very happy.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Amity asked her girlfriend as they walked outside together.
"Nope!" Luz replied cheerfully. And with that, the two of them hopped on Amity's staff and flew after Hunter's palisman to who-knows-where.
