'It's dark' That was the first thing that I thought the moment I woke up, everywhere around me was dark as if I was in the depths of the abyss itself.
What is this? Am I still dreaming? Getting tired of the pitch black darkness, i tried to get up an- huh that's weird i can't …move. Panic surged within me as I thought of the multitude of ways on why the fuck i can't move and can't see anything. What is going on? Am i paralyzed? Blind? In a coma? Dead?
Calm down, panicking won't get anything done, it took me a while to realize that I wasn't actually breathing. I noticed when I took deep breaths to calm down, that should have made it worse and should have caused my heart to start stammering in my chest…. Except I didn't have a heart. Great.
One might be confused at my response on how fast it took me to calm down and the nonchalance that I couldn't breathe nor have a heart instead of falling into despair at the pants-shitting terror. Well that would be reasonable. But I was always a pragmatic person and good at adapting.
For all I knew this could have been sleep induced paralysis or… nope not going back to that again. I have to assume that's not the case. So, lacking in direction, I copied a scene from a popular movie that is similar to this situation.
Wiggle your big toe.
And after a few seconds it worked… i think. I could feel the big toe of my right foot move, but didn't feel quite right, almost numb, but it was fine for the movement. Encouraged by this turn of events, I started to work my way up. My other toes, my ankles, my legs.. Sooner than I would have thought I could move my limbs now, even if I was still blind. I tried to push myself to my feet-
And I immediately lost my balance and fell onto all fours, fingers and toes digging sharply into the floor. For a while I remained still. The feeling of this position… is strangely comfortable. I slowly tried to stand up again and I lost my balance again before I could stand straight. I twisted as I fell on all fours again with surprising grace. After a moment I started to suspect something and I started to pat down my body. Even with my muted sense of touch, it didn't take long to find out why. Almost everywhere I touched my body was tough and skeletal like biomechanical. My torso was too narrow and inhumanly proportioned, My arms were spindly and ended in clawed talons, my legs were digitrade, and my head was elongated and cylindrical with a domed smoother carapace on top save for a maw of razor sharp teeth.
My back possessed four tube-like dorsal spines, one pair larger the other one pair smaller, and a long ridged segmented tail that ended with a long blade swept between my legs. And I found I was missing one particular appendage on my groin.
I couldn't even curse due to the lack of proper lips or tongue made this whole experience a complete bullshit.
Eventually, I regained my composure. It was either to continue lamenting or do something productive, I chose the latter. Once I got moving I quickly discovered I was trapped in a small rectangular room. Which seemed to be made entirely out of rock or something else close to it. Even after stumbling around I didn't find any openings, no matter how much I clawed at that thing I could only scratch it. I was so frustrated that i'm not making any progress which drove me up to the ceiling.
Literally.
Well at least there's a silver-lining to this, I thought bleakly as I sat, my claws finding purchase on the rocky surface which allowed me to remain where I was. I let out a hissing sigh.
Ok let's assess, I thought as I released my grip and fell to the ground, landing deftly on my hands and feet as I did so. It was about a 15 foot drop to the ground, and even in my blinded state I knew when to brace for impact. I fell asleep last night in a room, then I woke up not in said room but underground with an inhuman body and if my impression is correct, a xenomorph drone, fortunately I didn't have the second jaw, but what happened before I slept? I started to recall a white room an- static. Huh i dozed off for a second there what about my name it should be- Static. Static. Bzz.
I found myself lying down having blacked out for a moment. It seems recalling past memories will render me unconscious, but that doesn't explain the static noises. Odd that I'm not upset over my apparent amnesia, that seems worrying. Regardless, best to put that on hold for now. I moved slowly as I once again tried to stand on two feet, but this time attempting to use my tail to properly balance myself. The sharp end point twitched erratically as I struggled to get it under control.
Which actually made sense, oddly enough. Since the human brain was not wired for a prehensile tail… assuming my brain is still that of a human, so it was a miracle i could use my tail at all.
The reason I couldn't see was that I didn't have eyes anymore. Just the smooth carapace where they should have been. And yet there were times where I could see fragments of things like a faint outline or impression for the briefest of moments. I let out an irritated growl at not having eyes anymore with as much force I could muster.
Suddenly I had a mental snap, and saw the whole room in a burst. Not an image per se, but I perceived the entire room as an impression of rough surfaces and jagged corners, the impression of angles and distances in a way I never saw before.
And in an instant it was gone and I was back in darkness. I flexed those unknown muscles in my throat in the same way to know it was not a feint, and again the image appeared in my head. Echolocation. I realized. I can see in ultrasound. That explains it.
I spent what I think was the following hour pacing about my room, practicing my movements and getting used to my new sight and balance. Not that it helped in my current situation seeing I was still trapped inside this damn box.
I'm trapped in here forever aren't i? I thought miserably. Suddenly I heard a faint crackling from the wall then a crack appeared which was then soon turned into a fissure. Not looking at a gift horse in the mouth. I sprung into action and dashed into the fissure
What awaited me on the other side of the fissure was not the outside with an open clearing and blue sky as I expected. But the one with rocky terrain filled with stalagmites, I was still underground. Guess I was too hopeful. I thought soberly as I looked behind me to check the fissure I came out of, but was stupefied that the fissure disappeared and replaced with a rocky terrain. That is strange.
Nevertheless, I should press on and find a means of escape. After walking about for the next few minutes, I eventually stumbled upon two diverging paths, one leads down while the other one led up. After careful consideration I took the latter path. I'm no cave expert but up should lead up right? After all, it's a long way up.
I should have known just because it was up did not mean up.
The cavern moved. Literally. The path behind collapsed which didn't allow me to backtrace and the path ahead that was leading up descended down. Just what is with this cavern? Is it alive? Am I still on earth?
I hissed to dismiss such thoughts. There were no other paths in this tunnel such as a hole in the ceiling I could scale and crept unto other than the one that the cavern wants me to go to. Alas, there was no point in brooding, instead I reluctantly trudged on to the very depths of hell.
At some point in time i reached an opening of the tunnel, i entered forthwith, i took a look around with what i had decided to call my vision 'blindsight', the new floor was very large, as my blindsight failed to show me any walls and ceilings aside from the one on my back that faded into darkness. In front of me appeared to be a large number of blocky shapes and pillars in a manner that reminded me of obstacles. It reminded me of an arena.
That thought filled me with an abrupt sense of trepidation, which did not help when I heard a roar from a short distance away. I quickly got on all fours and darted to the nearest structure, scaling it until I was on top of it, hoping to get cover and locate where it originated. It didn't take long to locate as the roars intensified and grew in number. 46 meters away was a group of… are those skeletons and lizardmen? My vision suddenly switched, The lizardmen looked mostly purple and dim orange. But how I rely on echolocation then how I can see colors. Thermal imaging. I realized as xenomorphs are also capable of detecting heat. I tried again to switch my vision to that of echolocation recalling the feeling of how it switched after a few tries it worked. Seems I can switch it back anytime Useful.
The group of skeletal monster's wielded a varied range of medieval weapons, such as swords, lances, maces, kite shields and bows. They appear to inhibit intelligence on how their formation is used, tight-knit spearmen at the front, archers at the back. While the group of lizardmen appeared more primal and animalistic in nature, growling and scraping the floor with their sharp claws as an intimidation tactic, their formation spread out and open.
This standoff appeared to be a territorial dispute. More and more of them appeared in their respective groups, their skirmish now turned into a full-out battled, climax reached when the skeletal archers let loose their arrows straight into the heart of the lizardmen, this in turn enraged the lizardmen as they charged without restraint as the spearmen braced for impact but a group of hidden lizardmen charged from the flanks of the skeletal army. Chaos ensues.
I could use this to my advantage, I thought to myself, perched precariously on the side of the pillar before I leapt to the closest pillar which I almost failed and fell had I not dug my claws into it, it was the first time i jumped in this body and missed the trajectory as i landed on the wall of the pillar, fortunately i got the hang of it the now and leapt to the second pillar without problems.
I stopped after the fourth pillar as I looked down at the fifth pillar as a stray lizardman was on top of it, eyes observing the battle ahead as if scouting, and back turned towards me. They do appear to have some semblance of intelligence after all, I thought as I scrutinized my options on whether i should tackle it or leave it alone and find another way, the other pillars where too far away, i couldn't also go down and stealthily run away from here with the chance of later being found by that scout or running into others.
I eventually settled into silencing the scout, I readied myself into action and leapt, pouncing unto the lizardman which let out a shocked yelp as we sailed downwards at about a 20 meter drop with a loud thud. I'm heavier than I look. That stunned the scout as I brought my tail up and strike downwards right towards its neck and gave out a squelching and gurgling sound as it flailed about. I twisted my tail that is still impaled on its neck which finally put it out of its misery.
I heard a roar and deftly dodged an attack that came behind me. There was another lizardman and this one was larger than the others and called upon two more with the last roar. I wasn't going to fight them on their terms, not with their advantage in numbers and assuming they were physically stronger than me, so I did what any sane person would do. I screeched before I spun and ran away into the darkness. As expected they chased after me but I was surprisingly fast and nimble on the rough terrain with no problems, eventually I outran them and they lost track of me. I could have escaped there and find another path that leads up but curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to test my body.
I returned back stealthily to the wall near them and found that the trio was still sticking to each other. I had hoped that they would eventually split up which would've made it easier but no point in that now let's see how far this body can go. I remained still perpendicular to the wall and scratched at it in order to produce noise but small enough to only attract the farthest one from the group which it did, and made its way all over here and close enough that there was only 4 meters gap between us but made no action whatsoever. It couldn't see me perfect, I thought sadistically. The lizardmen lost interest at the wall as there wasn't anything there and turned back but that was what led to its demise as I plunged my spear-like tail into its back and right out of its chest before pulling it up until I was face to face with it, then I bit off its neck.
This attracted the other lizardmen as it started to dart toward me, i threw the dead lizardmen on my tail onto it but was able to dodge it, but was immediately pounced back as i had lept to it after i threw the dead carcass onto it immediately which blinded it from seeing me. I brought my tail up to strike at its head but was dodged at the last second. The lizardmen then threw me off and rolled on top of me prepared to strike its long claws onto my flesh but… it forgot my tail as it came out of its left chest with a gem impaled by it, then suddenly it poofed out of existence.
This sudden turn of event caused me to forget about the third foe, as it tackled me to the nearby base of the pillar with such force it cracked under the pressure. That impact should have crushed every bone in my body… except I didn't feel an immense pain as I thought it would, a constant reminder I'm not in my old body anymore, I really need to figure this out at some point. And it wasn't at that right moment, because before I could even get back up that thing grabbed my tail and spun me around the nearby pillars before throwing me away. Everything distorted as I tumbled through the air, and I skipped a few times off the ground before I clawed at the ground slowing my momentum.
I cast a glance at my opponent, taking its full appearance in my head. It appeared to be larger and bulkier than the others and adorned an ornamental crested headpiece with feathers. I'll call that one chieftain for convenience's sake And it appeared to be very angry. It charged at me i avoided it and deftly dodged the tail aiming towards me as the chieftain spun back, i pounced onto its back my left hand clawed thrust onto it's back in order to not fall off and my right slashed at its back, it's thick hide finding my claws hard to leave a fatal wound but continuously slashing without abandon as i prepared my tail to strike. But it abruptly rolled on its back crushing me.
Before I could escape the chieftain was already on top of me, boxing me in and trying to tear me to bits as it pounded and clawed at me. I started to feel pain as it continued to strike at me while I tried to punch back and scratch it but the chieftain barely flinched, duking it out wasn't working, I needed a new plan.
My tail coiled around its leg and gashed at the chieftains left ankle which led out a pained cry and momentarily lost its balance. I pulled at the chieftain's left leg with my tail causing it to tumble backwards which allowed me to jump back and create some distance between us.
That thing is stronger than I but I'm faster, I thought as I attempted hit and run tactics on the chieftain on it's joints. As the fight dragged out the chieftain thrashed and roared but grew weaker and more sluggish as it continued to lose energy whether due to how tired it is or blood loss.
Noticing this I pounced on it and stabbed my tail right on to its neck, it gurgled and twitched before finally giving out and dying. I let out a triumphant hiss-like roar over my recent victory. As i pulled my tail back and found that it was bloodied the same as my hands. I haven't thought about this due to how surreal it was, but I have just killed 4 sentient beings and I felt… nothing. There was no feeling of horror and remorse, only cold hard emptiness. This was worrying, do I still have my humanity the moment I got this body? Stop dwelling upon it nothing good will come out, i'll figure it all out once i'm out of this damn cave.
I started to press on but before i knew it, there was movement on the back of my blindsight.
Now what.
Author's notes:
I noticed that there was a lack of xenos fics, so i figured rather than waiting for one why not make one myself and what not better than a xenomorph. This is also the first time I'm doing creative writing so constructive criticism is welcomed.
