Eileen sneezed again as she opened another box from Rowena's apartment. Sam laughed as he set the book he was looking at. "There isn't any dust on these books. Are you getting sick?"
She shot him a dirty look as she pulled out another stack of Rowena's journals. "No, I think your witch girlfriend is cursing me because I'm touching her stuff."
He walked over and kissed the top of her head as he pulled her into a hug. "You know Rowena was too old for me." She playfully slapped at him as he laughed, picking up a journal off of her pile. He flipped open the book, landing on a spell he had never seen before. "What's the Dark Hour?" Eileen looked at the page and shrugged.
Dean walked through the library, grabbing his laptop. "I'm going to bed. You two don't do anything I wouldn't do." He winked as Eileen giggled, blushing as she smiled.
"Hey Dean, have you ever heard of the Dark Hour?" Sam set down Rowena's journal so that everyone could see the page.
Dean smiled as he shook his head. "It's been at least twenty years since I've heard anyone talk about the Dark Hour. Dad looked for that for several years after you left for college. The lore said that it's a magical hour that occurs after midnight during a blue moon." He looked to see he had both of their total attention. "Ok so it's an hour that doesn't exist for the normal population but there's supposed to be a spell that when its cast it gives the caster an hour with a full formed spirit that they can ask questions and interact with. Dad searched for it thinking that he could talk to Mom and possibly get some answers. He never found the actual spell or maybe he wasn't doing it right or it wasn't truly a blue moon. Needless to say, he never talked to Mom." Dean looked at Rowena's handwriting and smiled. "But I would put my money on the ginger. I bet that this spell would allow whoever cast it to interact with a spirit for one precious hour." Dean winked at Sam as he started to walk off to his bedroom. "Also tomorrow is a blue moon, just saying Sammy."
Eileen watched as the man she was truly very fond of sat down in a daze. "Who do you want to see?" She asked, knowing that whoever it was had part of his heart.
He just shook his head. "I want to see Jess again," he looked up at her as she stepped back a little, "but not for why you THINK I want to see her." He stared at the page in the journal just wondering how he had never heard of the Dark Hour before. "Wow, the possibility of being able to see her again after all this time is flooring me but," he looked up at Eileen and smiled. "I need to apologize to her. I need to tell her that I should have told her WHAT the family business was so she could've had the option to walk away from me if it scared her. I need to tell her I'm so sorry she got caught up in the middle of all of this against her will." He smiled at Eileen as a tear rolled down her face. "I want to tell her that while I did love her completely, I love another now even more deeply."
Eileen leaned down and kissed him softly. "Then let's get the ingredients your ginger girlfriend specifies for this spell so you can see Jess one last time."
"Are you 100% sure that tonight is the blue moon, Dean?" Sam asked as he busily got the ingredients together. Most of what they needed they found in the bunker but Eileen ran into town to pick up a pure white candle.
"Yes Sammy. As per the weather man and the farmer's almanac, tonight is a blue moon." He glanced back over his shoulder at the door. "So since it's just me and you, tell me," Sam looked at Dean as he smirked. "Are you planning to see just how MUCH you can interact with the spirit?" He winked as Sam frowned at him. "I mean you have a WHOLE hour alone with her."
"Shut up, Dean! Damn it! I have some things I want to tell her and that's it." He then smiled. "But thanks for making me laugh, Jerk. I'm nervous about this all of a sudden." He put lavender and sage into the silver bowl as Dean nodded at him. He mindlessly broke the white birch branches into the bowl. "I have to be honest. I've missed her so much but I truly don't even know her any longer. I think I miss the idea of her. I miss…"
"You miss the fantasy of 'what could have been,' Sammy." Sam nodded feverishly in agreement, like it was the first time he thought of this feeling like that. "I know! I miss 'the what could have beens' in my life. Could I've married Cassie and been happy? Or could I've made a life with Lisa? Could I've raised Ben to be a good man? Would we be different if we didn't grow up like this?" He motioned to the bunker around them. "Would we have been as close as we are as brothers if Dad didn't drag us all over the country and leave us to our own devices all the time? How would we've turned out if we weren't God's favorite story?" Sam nodded as he heard the door open. He smiled as he watched Eileen start down the stairs. Dean smiled back at him as he took a sip of his bourbon. "Now, she is your 'will be'." Sam looked over at Dean, shocked. "If you let her walk away, it better be just to save her and even then, I think she'll stay until the end." He shrugged at his brother as Eileen walked into the room. "What can I say? I'm a helpless romantic."
"What's he talking about?" Eileen asked as she set down the white candles she got.
Sam just shook his head. "He's going to watch 'The Notebook' for the tenth time while I'm gone if you want to join him." She wrinkled up her nose as Sam laughed. "I take that as a NO." Dean flipped him off as he handed Eileen the black onyx knife. "Do we even know what happens here while the Dark Hour is happening?"
Dean shook his head. "There's nothing in the lore that Dad found and like I said, he never accomplished making it to the Hour. I can only guess either it will be like I blink and to me, nothing happened. You know it's midnight when you start the spell and it's still midnight when you get back or you get back at 2 am." Sam's face looked a little freaked out. "Don't worry! We'll be adding everything that happens to the lore for the next Men of Letters to have."
Sam put the last items in the bowl as Eileen passed him the knife. "Ok, here goes nothing." He sliced his hand, adding his blood over the photo of Jess and him from college. Eileen lit the candle and unknowingly placed her hand on Sam's shoulder as he finished the spell.
In a blink, the library around him disappeared. He glanced over to see Eileen standing with him. "What happened? I thought it was a one person trip."
"I guess when I touched you, I tagged along. I'm sorry, Sam. I know you wanted to have time alone with her to tell her..." They weren't alone. She felt eyes watching her as she talked to Sam. Eileen looked around the all white room to see a beautiful blonde looking at them like she wasn't sure who they were. "It looks like she doesn't recognize you."
"Did she call you Sam?" He nodded at her smiling sheepishly. "Sam Winchester?" She looked shocked at him. He had aged when she hadn't. "How long have I been…?"
He watched as she started to cry. He walked over pulling her into a bear hug. "It's been 15 years and I'm so sorry, Jess, for everything, for all of this."
She broke the hug. "Sorry for what exactly? I don't remember much of anything after we moved in together. Well that's a lie. I remember feeling like my body was being violated by some other being who wouldn't let me tell you it was there. It would take over when you were around and …"
"It's ok. You don't need to relive that time." He grabbed her hands as Eileen watched. "I'm sorry that I never told you what my dad did...well I can't even say 'a job' because it wasn't a job. He killed all of the things that went bump in the night. All of the things that regular humans think are fairy tales and horror stories. The Winchesters killed them all." Even though he knew he had an hour to explain, he felt like he needed to talk fast and tell her everything he hadn't. "It started the night my mom was killed. I was 6 months old, Dean was four and the whole event sent my dad into a crazed revenge state. All he could think about was killing the monster who killed her." He looked her in the eyes. "And who ultimately killed you." Tears were falling out of his eyes now as he watched her face fall. "I should have told you and given YOU the option of walking away from me."
"I wouldn't have had the option. The being invading my body told me it was destiny. I was part of the plan, how to get you to understand true pain. That I was the object that was supposed to send you over the edge and push you to become the Boy who would be King. They had big plans for you, Sam, but I guess you told them to screw off." He nodded as she continued. "The moment the fates put us together, I was done. I was a mere pawn in this game." She touched his face. Smiling, she ran her fingers through his hair ruffling it until he smiled back at her. "I can't say that I'm upset about being that object. I can't say that I'm mad that the fates picked me. I did get to spend some time with one of the coolest guys I've ever met."
He pulled her back into a deep hug, just holding her as close as he could. "I loved you so much. I wanted to marry you, but," before he could finish his statement, she broke their hug and smiled at him.
"But that wasn't meant to be. We were never meant to live happily ever after." She glanced over at Eileen and smiled at the woman who was staring back at her. "And now you love her." She motioned for Eileen to join them. Sam nodded as Eileen walked up but still stood away from the couple, giving them space and privacy. "Sam, I would never think that you would live your life without someone who loves you, who cares for you. I would never want that." She turned to look at Eileen. "Do you love him?"
Eileen looked at Sam and smiled. "Yes, I do."
"Good. That's all I can ask. Take care of him for me. He's been through a lot and he needs someone to tell him to relax every once in a while." Eileen nodded as Jess turned her attention back to Sam. "I love you, Sam Winchester. You have nothing to be sorry for." She kissed him softly. "You did nothing wrong and to tell you the truth, I would have said YES to you all over again even if I knew the odds." She hugged him tight one last time. He kissed the top of her head as she rubbed her head against his chest. "Goodbye, Sam. Be happy for me."
As Jess let Sam go, the all white room faded back into the bunker's library. They heard Dean talking as if he didn't know they were gone. "Seriously, I hope this works. I would love to allow some people who need answers to have the chance to…" Dean turned around from pouring his bourbon.
Sam stopped listening to Dean and turned to Eileen. "So you love me?" She smiled as she nodded. He pulled her into a hug. "I love you, too." He softly kissed her lips as she held him closer.
Dean turned around and looked at Sam and Eileen hugging each other. "Are you two lovebirds just going to stand there or are you going to try the spell?" He asked as he took a sip of his drink.
Sam smiled as he asked, "What time is it, Dean?" Eileen slyly smiled at Sam as they figured out that time must have stopped when they were gone.
Dean shook his head as he looked at his watch. "12:01 am. Why? You're going to miss your chance if you don't start the spell. A blue moon doesn't occur all the time hence the reason they say 'Once in a Blue Moon!'"
Sam smiled as he put his arm around Eileen's waist. "We just got back, Dean. I already spoke to Jess." He watched Dean's face light up.
"What? Are you kidding me?" Dean smiled like an excited little kid. "So time stops while someone makes it to this magical plane to talk to the spirit. Was it just Jess or were there more spirits? What did the plane look like?" Dean actually grabbed a notebook and started to write down the questions he was asking. "I have so many questions. I'm not normally really nerdy about things like this but after spending years watching Dad trying and failing, it's fan-fucking-tastic that it worked." He looked up to see Sam and Eileen kissing like horny teenagers. "What the hell guys? I'm talking and you two aren't even listening to me."
Sam laughed as they started walking out of the library. "So now you know what it feels like to be ME most days when I'm trying to talk to you, Jerk." Sam smiled as they passed Dean. "We know it was a success and now I think we're going to do things you haven't done in a while." He winked as Dean just frowned. "Good night, Dean."
"Whatever, Bitch." Dean grabbed the bottle of bourbon, his notebook of questions, and his glass before walking off to his room.
