Soon, the lunch break was over and the competitors were lined up. Sanders was already setting up the tiles, as Chris began explaining.
"This next challenge will be different from the others. Only one member from each team will be competing. This is also gonna be an advantage challenge. You won't get eliminated unless you step out of the box and, if you win, you'll get a major advantage in the next challenge."
Jo slammed her fist into her palm. "Yeah, baby." She turned to Duncan. "You can sit back for this one. I'll blow through this challenge in five seconds."
Duncan didn't say anything, as he stared at his partner. He then looked up at Sanders, who was still setting up the tiles. When she suddenly noticed her new boyfriend staring at her, she stopped. She noticed Duncan was jutting his finger up and down, pointing at himself. The Cadet was confused, but quickly figured it out. She took the tile she had just placed and put in another. Once Chris asked her to reveal the participants, she turned them over revealing Amy, Zoey and Duncan to compete.
Jo stammered to herself. "WHAT?! I...wha- Why am I not-" Her words soon degraded to an annoyed grunt. She didn't see Duncan, trying to stifle a laugh.
Confessional (Duncan): With Jo no longer around, he was laughing a lot harder. "That will never...not...be funny." He said, through his chuckles.
Static.
As Jo grumbled in the spectator zone, the three chosen competitors stood in the center, in a circle. "The challenge for this," Chris started. "You'll be playing a game of Ninja. You play by only using your right arm and both of your legs . Whoever goes first will have to make a move. You want to try to get the other player out. You do this, but only in swift motion, by tapping another player's arm. If you do tap it, that person will be out. The other player can move their arm to avoid being hit, but only when the other player is attacking. Otherwise, you cannot move your arm at all. To start things off, everyone put your left arm behind your back and strike a ninja pose." The competitors did as instructed. Amy gave a panicked look and put her hand straight up. Zoey stepped back slightly and kept her hand to her side. Duncan leaned to the side and put his hand above his heart. "We'll start with Duncan, then Zoey and then Amy, then back to Duncan, Zoey and so on."
Duncan quickly took his chance and put his hand in the center. Zoey saw it and debated what to do. Duncan's smart, he probably wants me to go for it. She put her hand up her left shoulder. Amy definitely wasn't as comfortable playing the game. Without much thinking, she went straight for Duncan's hand. The Ex-Con knew she would and quickly pulled back. Now Amy's hand was left in the center and, since it was his turn, Duncan went straight for it. Amy didn't react in time and the Ex-Con tapped her hand.
"And, with that, Amy is out." Chris announced. The Twin groaned and walked to the viewing area. Duncan couldn't help but grin. Suddenly he saw a flash and, instinctively, pulled his arm back. He barely avoided Zoey's chop. He then tensed up, but saw Zoey playfully smirking at him. That eased Duncan up a bit, and he returned the look. He took another swing at Zoey's hand but she dodged it. This time, Zoey stepped to the side and away from her opponent. Duncan then used his turn to move towards her. Soon, the two were having an intense game, with close calls and...a little bit of trash talking. From the viewer's area, Mike couldn't help but smile. He liked seeing Zoey have fun, even if it wasn't with him.
Isn't with me… His thoughts echoed.
His smile fell and he sighed, probably louder than he meant to. Zoey heard him, and glanced over. She saw his downcast expression, and she frowned too. Unfortunately, she had forgotten that she was still playing. She snapped back, and froze...leaving her arm in the middle of the area, with Duncan's arm only a few inches away. Zoey gulped, once she realized her mistake.
Jo slapped her hands together. "Alright, we totally got this! Don't mess this up, Saggy Pants."
Duncan ignored her. He had seen what Zoey did, and knew what it meant. He looked at her hand. With little effort, he could easily tap her hand and win the challenge. However, he still felt he had a debt to pay.
Zoey looked at her hand nervously. But she was surprised when Duncan's hand went right under her own. He completely missed. Not only that, but he had now left himself wide open. The other competitors stared, dumbfound. None more Jo.
"What are you doing!? You could've won!"
Again, Duncan didn't listen. He saw Zoey start to focus, which is exactly what he wanted. With a simple tap, Zoey hit Duncan's hand. He was out and…
"Zoey is the winner of the challenge...somehow." Chris declared
The Indie Chick was still processing what just happened, but when she saw Duncan's smile, she calmed down. She then turned over to Mike who, surprisingly, was smiling back at her. She returned it, and they both stared at each other for a few seconds. But, like last time, it ended too soon, and the both of them immediately went back to ignoring each other.
Damnit Duncan thought.
"Now let's bring in the competitors that didn't compete." Chris announced.
Jo, Mike and Samey all stepped towards the center. The Jockette was readying herself up. "Unlike my partner, I'm gonna actually throw this challenge." She looked at her opponents. "So you two better not be expecting this to be easy." Samey and Mike just rolled their eyes.
Chef was now standing in front of the box, with a box full of red dodgeballs. He was tossing one up and down. "For this challenge," He said. "Y'all gonna be playing a game of dodgeball. But this one's gonna be a bit different One by one, each of you will come to the center of the box. I'm gonna throw ten dodgeballs at you. If you dodge all of them, you'll be safe. But if you get hit three times, or step out of the box, you and your partner will be eliminated."
"The order in which everyone goes will be determined by Sanders." Chris spoke up. "Since Zoey won the last challenge, Mike will get advantage in this one. He will be going last. And, in case you doubt Chef's throwing abilities…" He snapped his fingers. From behind him, Chef threw his dodgeball at the nearby rock wall. It flew like a rocket, and hit the wall with a loud THUMP. Some cracks appeared where the ball landed. However instead of stopping, the ball bounced back and ended up nailing Chris in the head. The force caused him to tumble down.
His face was smacked right into the sand, and his legs went straight up. He fell back down in a heap. Chef looked shocked, but also very guilty. The other competitors laughed at him.
Later, the first competitor was ready. The others waited in the viewing area. Jo grinned confidently. "You better bring your A-game, Chef. I ain't getting eliminated by some old guy who burns toast."
Chef just growled as he squeezed the dodgeball, in his hand. Chris blew a whistle, and his co-host immediately chucked the ball towards Jo. But the Jockette knew it was coming and twisted her body, narrowly dodging the ball. Chef threw another ball, and the same thing happened. Jo almost treated it like a game, and started taunting the Co-host. "Whatsa matter Chefy?" She mocked, as she dodged another ball. "You need your little army of interns to make yourself look tough." She ducked another, followed by a few more. "To be honest, that chubby intern with the glasses, was far more threatening than you've ever been." Now Chef was seeing red. He forcefully grabbed a dodgeball and hurled it towards the Jockette. Jo was actually caught off guard by the sheer force of the ball, and fell back into the sand, though she avoided getting hit. Before she could even think about getting up, Chef had thrown another ball at her. It hit her chest, and she was sent rolling backwards. Duncan got nervous, as he saw her heading towards the edge of the box. Thankfully, the Jockette skidded to a stop, a few feet away from the wooden plank. Duncan sighed, relieved.
Chef was about to pick up another ball, but Chris tapped in on the shoulder. "That's ten, my man. Jo's safe." Chef didn't respond, but continued glaring at the loud mouthed competitor.
As Jo started getting up, she was still laughing, though she was definitely feeling the effects of getting hit. "Is that all you…" She clutched her stomach and let out a groan. "Is that all you got Chef? I thought a...a guy like you...would…" She suddenly started hacking. "That a guy like you...would hit a little harder." She continued mocking as she headed towards the spectator's area.
Zoey looked concerned. "Jo, are you sure you're alright?"
The Jockette laughed. "I'm...I'm fine...you little...s-stupid...face." She swayed, as Duncan grabbed her shoulders.
"You should probably lie down." He said.
"You'd like that...you little...stupid...face." Jo let out another groan, as she lost balance again. Duncan and Zoey helped her to the ground. Now she was left, lying in the sand, mumbling in pain.
The next competitor, Samey, was soon ready for her part of the challenge. After seeing Jo being reduced to a stuttering wreck, she was more than a little nervous. Nonetheless, she put on a brave face. Chris blew his whistle, and Chef chucked the ball. Samey was almost thrown off guard, but she was able to dodge it. Chef tossed another, and she moved out of the way. Though she felt a gust of wind, as the ball soared past her. Now she was getting nervous. After dodging another, Chef picked up two. He tossed one straight up, into the air. Samey watched it, as it came down towards her. Suddenly, she realized what Chef was doing and she looked forward. She was just in time to see Chef's second ball leave his hand. Though she moved away, it wasn't fast enough. The ball struck her in the shoulder, and the impact caused her to almost fall back. She winced, and clutched where the ball had hit her. Thankfully, she was able to avoid the next ball.
I don't know if I can keep going on like this, she thought. That really hurt.
"You've got this, sis'."
Samey turned and saw Amy giving her a thumbs up, and a smile. Almost instantly, Samey's doubts were cast aside. Still holding her shoulder, she bobbed and weaved and was successfully able to avoid the remaining dodgeballs. Chris stopped Chef, and Samey headed towards the spectator's area. Amy gave her a comforting pat on her uninjured shoulder. Though Samey was still in pain, she smiled.
Confessional (Samey): She was still smiling, as she sighed. "It's so nice to have a sister that cheers you on, instead of laughing at you when you fall over."
Static
Last one up was Mike. He slapped in cheeks a few times to psych himself up. Chef had a hand on his right shoulder and was wincing slightly. Chris looked at the camera. "Looks like Chef might be getting tired. All Mike has to do is avoid getting hit, and everyone's safe."
Soon Chef was ready. He threw the ball towards Mike. It was at a much slower speed than usual, so Mike had no issue dodging it. He gracefully leaped to the side, then again when Chef tossed the second ball.
Confessional (Mike): He was grinning proudly. "Thank you, Svetlana."
Static.
As the Spikey-haired competitor swiftly dodged the balls, something was still lingering on his mind. He slipped suddenly and nearly fell over. Chef saw the opportunity and threw the ball again. Mike snapped back, but not in time. He jumped back, but the dodgeball grazed his hand.
Chris shot a finger at him. "Ohhh...Mike. That's not good. Two more hits and you're done."
Mike grabbed his wrist and tried shaking the pain off. Chef threw another ball, which Mike avoided. However in that instance, his gaze locked on the viewing area. And there he saw Zoey. She looked worried. Was she thinking about the possibility of getting eliminated, or was she worried for Mike's wellbeing? Mike debated what it could be, which turned out to be a mistake. Since Mike was distracted, Chef took the opportunity to chuck another dodgeball. It struck him right in the stomach. He winced and fell on his bottom. He glanced to see Chef ready to throw another ball.
"Mike!" came a voice.
At once, Mike's eyes shot open. Almost instinctively, he leaned back and brought his knees to his chest. The dodgeball left Chef's hand, and headed towards the spikey haired competitor. Suddenly, Mike kicked his legs up and pushed against the sand with his hands. His back left the ground. The ball soared underneath, missing him by inches. He stood upright and caught his breath. Like him, the other competitors were just as shocked as what happened.
Chef just grinned. "Nice trick, bub. But this last one's gonna do it for you." He pulled his arm back and aimed. Mike gulped. Since he was standing at point blank range, he had no idea where Chef was going to throw. He braced himself and held firm. The other competitors watched him, unsure of how this would end. Chef was in the process of chucking the ball, when he heard a sudden crack and his arm faltered. The ball left his hand, but it landed on the sand, with a dull bounce, right at his feet. Chef looked feebly at it.
A mocking laugh followed soon after. "Geez, Chef." Chris taunted. "You end your last throw like that? Come on, we're supposed to make this tough for these guys." Chef just glared as he rubbed his throwing arm. Chris turned to the others. "Congratulations to our three competitors. You pulled through for your team, and thus, no one is eliminated...yet."
Jo grinned, while Amy and Samey shared a high five. Mike let out a sigh of relief and he looked at his partner. She didn't look especially happy, but her stance looked a lot more relaxed. He wanted to thank her, but he still didn't know what to say.
Confessional (Duncan): "Zoey wants to forgive Mike. I know it. You saw what she did." He crossed his arms and thought for a moment. "I need to find a way to get those two together...and maybe Sanders can help me with that."
Static.
Sanders was placing the tiles for the next challenge. She looked at each of them and thought about where to put them.
Confessional (Sanders): "I know Duncan's my...boyfriend…" She smiled and blushed a little. "I still love saying that. But maybe I shouldn't be giving the advantage every chance I get. Remember what happened to Gwen and Trent? Macarthur won't let me forget it."
Static
Soon, all the competitors were on one side of the box. Amy was holding a trash bag, Mike had a potato sack and Jo was standing next to a metal trash can. They all stared, confused, at what they had.
Chris explained. "This challenge is easy if you've ever been to a country fair. All duos will be competing in a...potato sack race."
Duncan looked down at the trash can. "So...we're using a-"
"Yes, Duncan." Chris interrupted. "Whatever Sanders gave you is what you'll be using in this race. First to reach the end wins. Both duos must be inside your, for lack of a better term, vehicle, at all times."
Duncan turned his gaze to Jo, who was already getting in the can. Then he glanced up towards the stage. Sanders was watching him, with a sly grin. She followed it up with a shrug. Duncan sighed.
Confessional (Duncan): He thought for a few seconds, before also shrugging. "Eh...I guess that's fair."
Static.
After about a minute, all the competitors were in their given "vehicles." Amy and Samey found the trash bag a little awkward, but weren't too worried. Mike and Zoey felt very awkward being so close to each other, and Jo and Duncan even more so.
"You're standing on my foot, Numb Skull." Jo snapped.
"Hey, Genius." Duncan retorted. "We're in a garbage can. There's barely any room for me to stand."
A grin formed on Jo's face. "This is kinda appropriate, y'know? Garbage cans are normally for useless things. So it only makes sense that you would end up in one." She proceeded to belt out a hearty laugh.
Duncan was about to remind Jo that she was also in the trash can, but he was interrupted by an airhorn. With the start of the challenge, Jo was quick to try and get things moving.
"Come on, BigFoot. Let's get this thing moving."
The trash can was swaying from side to side, and they weren't moving forward. Duncan was worried. "Hold on, we need to-" It didn't matter. With all the rocking about they were doing, the only forward momentum they got was them falling forward, into the sand.
"And it looks like Jo and Duncan are down for the count." Chris announced.
Duncan grumbled to himself, while Jo spat out some sand.
Mike and Zoey, meanwhile, weren't having the same issues, but were still experiencing complications. The bag was holding nicely, but they weren't talking to each other. They were neck and neck with Amy and Samey, who weren't having the same problem.
Mike glanced over at Zoey. Come on. Just talk to her He said to himself. We don't need to patch anything, we just need to finish the race. Despite his thoughts, all he did was stare at his partner. He sighed. Dang it.
Zoey, on the other hand, was having similar thoughts. We just need to finish this challenge. We can work as a team for another thirty seconds. What he did wasn't that bad. Was it?
Since neither were talking, they weren't coordinating how, and when, to jump. Sure enough, Zoey jumped while Mike was in the process of landing. She felt the sang and then felt her hands let go of the sack. She jumped up a couple of inches into the air, and her waist got caught on the bag. She finally ended up falling forward and face planted into the sand.
"And with Mike and Zoey experiencing issues," Chris narrated. "That only leaves…" At that moment, Amy and Samey had reached the other side of the box. "...The Twins!" Chris finished. "They win, and will get an advantage in the next challenge." The two dropped the bag, and high-fived.
Jo pounded her fist into the sand, while Duncan just glared. Mike was still looking down at Zoey. She had slightly picked herself up and was spitting sand out of her mouth. Say something to her! Mike shouted at himself. Ask if she's alright. Help her up. Do...something.
But instead of doing anything, he chose...to just stare blankly and say nothing.
Soon, it was time for another challenge. Chris told Sanders that she had to choose a duo to sit out. She looked at the three tiles and picked up the one with Duncan and Jo's name. The Ex-Con could see what she was doing and suddenly realized something. Sanders was about to put the tile on the board, when something caught her eye. Duncan was looking up at her, like he was trying to get her attention. It worked, as Sanders stared back at him, with a curious expression. The Ex-Con then tilted his head to the side repeatedly. The Cadet was confused, and looked where he was signaling.
She didn't catch it, at first, but figured he could mean only one thing. Mike and Zoey? She thought Why is he- It suddenly hit her. Sanders looked down at her tile, then at Duncan. He was now nodding to her. Still somewhat confused, Sanders put down her tile and picked up another. She placed it on the board and turned it around.
Chris looked up. "Mike and Zoey. You two are sitting out of the challenge." The two were a little surprised, and looked nervously at each other. They instantly turned away. Chris clapped his hands. "For the rest of you, this will be an elimination challenge. Amy and Samey, you have the advantage, so you will…"
As Chris went on, Mike and Zoey headed to the spectators area. Neither said a word. For a while, at least. Despite their refusal to speak, both kept glancing at each other.
This is driving me insane Mike thought I should say something to her, right? If Zoey wanted to break up with me, she'd say so...wouldn't she? I'd rather she just give me an answer, then keep me waiting. Unless she's gonna break up with me. He gulped nervously.
He keeps looking at me, Zoey thought to herself Maybe I should just...I don't even know what. I... She considered her options. Alright, fine. I'll do it.
Slowly, Zoey turned her head to face Mike. The Spikey Haired competitor cast another quick glance, before realizing that Zoey was staring at him. Thinking the worst, he reluctantly met her gaze. The two stared, in silence, neither giving an idea of how they were feeling.
Eventually, Mike sighed. "Zoey, I-"
"Mike, I can't do this anymore."
The Ex-MPD's heart shattered. It's over. He thought glumly. It's really over. He tried to stop himself from shedding any tears. I should've seen this coming. Wiping his eyes, he looked back at Zoey. "Zoey...I understand if you don't want to see me anymore. I'll admit, it's gonna take a while for me to get over you, but I-"
"What?" Zoey looked confused. "Mike, I'm not breaking up with you."
Mike went wide eyed. "You're...you're not?"
"No. I thought about it for a while and I…" She struggled to get the words out. "Look, what you did was bad and...we're definitely gonna have a talk about it later." She paused. "And…I don't know if this is the right thing to do, but..." She slowly started to smile. "I don't think I want to be mad at you anymore."
Mike's shock turned to excitement. He laughed happily. "Zoey, I- Thank you so much!" He stepped forward and took both of Zoey's hands in his own. "I'm really sorry I ever thought you would cheat on me. I just-" He didn't get the chance to finish.
"Mike." Zoey smiled warmly. "It's fine…" Her smile fell slightly. "...Ok, maybe it's not, but..." She shook her head, and smiled again. "I don't want to let our first fight be our last." She held his hands up to her chest and her cheeks blushed. "I...I still love you."
Mike beamed. "I love you too, Zoey." The two let go of their hands, and wrapped each other in a tight hug. Mike felt all of his fears melt away, and for the first time in a while, he felt happy. Like, really happy. "I missed this a lot."
"Me too." Zoey responded. She released the hug, and the two kissed. But Zoey suddenly realized something. That wasn't enough. Zoey grabbed Mike's face and kissed him again. And again. And Again. And-
"Ahem."
Mike and Zoey stopped and turned. "If you guys are done sucking face," Chris quipped. "We're done with the challenge. Since Duncan and Jo were able to beat the Twins score, no one gets eliminated."
"What was the challenge?" Zoey asked.
Chris turned. "Partner squats." He started walking away. "Now if you'll excuse me, Chef and I have to get ready for the next challenge."
Mike and Zoey looked over. Amy and Samey were standing next to each other, but Jo held up Duncan, in a fireman's carry. The Ex-Con was not entertained. "I am the Squat champion!" Jo screamed. She put both of her hands up, and unceremoniously dumped Duncan onto the sand. He let out a grunt, but seemed more annoyed than hurt. Then he looked up to notice Mike and Zoey. As soon as he saw Zoey smiling at him, he figured it out. He grinned back at her.
Confessional (Duncan): He had his arms crossed, and he was smirking proudly. "Call me glue, because I just put them back together." He held his smile, before it slowly fell. He cringed, and sighed. "Geez...that was lame."
Static.
Chris and Chef soon returned. Though they had brought a few things with them. For one, they had come back with more people. Specifically, the interns. The competitors stared, confused. The interns all had devilish looks on their faces and were chuckling menacingly. To make things even more disturbing, they were all carrying hockey sticks. Chef was carrying a burlap sack, over his shoulder. Whatever was in the bag was moving and making weird chomping noises.
The competitors watched as Chris guided them around the box. Now there were two interns occupying each side. Once he was done, Chris cleared his throat. "Now, you all might have questions about this next challenge."
"Yeah…" Zoey noted. "Like, why are the interns here?"
"And why are they carrying hockey sticks?" Jo added.
Chris pointed a finger. "I can answer both of those questions. The interns are here...well, because of what happened during the…" He coughed into his fist. "Rioting challenge...so I'm allowing them to have a little fun." Chef started walking towards one of the intern duos. "As for the hockey sticks, we thought it would be fun to pay tribute to an old challenge. One of you might recognize it."
Chef emptied the bag in front of some of the interns. It was revealed that the contents inside the sack were...snapping turtles. Duncan immediately knew what was going on, and gulped. The other competitors figured it out too and did the same.
"Wait," came a voice.
Chris turned around and looked at Sanders. "What is it?"
"What am I supposed to do for this? I thought you said this was 'Sanders says.' Shouldn't I give, like, an advantage, or something?"
Chris just shrugged. "Eh, this is more of a gift to the interns. You don't have to do anything. Just be lucky you're not the one taking part."
Sanders considered her options, before quickly figuring he was right, and walked off.
Chris turned and continued explaining. "The interns will be firing slapshots at all of you. But instead of pucks we'll be using snapping turtles, as you've probably figured out. If you get caught in their sharp toothy clutches, you'll stand to the side in the spectator's area. That means you'll be out of the challenge. But, more importantly, if both members of one duo end up getting bit...they'll be eliminated...from the game. Survive this challenge long enough, and everyone will be safe."
The competitors shared nervous glances, but they were quickly interrupted. Chris blew a whistle and the challenge began. The interns wasted no time as they each shot the turtles at the competitors. They were all able to dodge the first shot, but it wasn't easy. Since they were surrounded, they had to keep constantly glancing around.
Duncan and Samey were able to dodge the first few shots. Samey avoided another, before realizing something. She turned towards her sister. Amy was able to avoid the turtles, at first, but she was clearly panicking. The intern that was closest to her did another slap shot towards her. The flying turtle caused Amy to stumble, and fall back. It flew over her head and out of the box. Amy quickly saw that the intern was ready for another shot. The Twin squeaked in fright, shut her eyes and held up her hands. She heard the slap and waited.
Chomp.
"OW!"
Amy opened her eyes. She checked around to make sure she was alright. Then she looked up. The snapping turtle had not come in contact with her, but it did with Samey, who had stepped in front of her sister. The turtle was biting her arm and she was wincing from it.
"Looks like Samey is the first one out," Chris pointed. "Now it's up to Amy to keep them going out."
Despite the clear pain on her face, Samey managed a smile towards her sister. Amy was surprised, but returned it. Jo suddenly rushed in, and grabbed the turtle from Samey's arm. She ran to the center, and held it in front of her.
Confessional (Jo): "I'm a genius," she said confidently. "The turtles can't get me if I use one of them as a shield. Now my chances of winning just doubled." She put her hands behind her back and sighed contently. "Not that I need the help or anything."
Static
One of the black haired interns shot another turtle towards the Jockette. She put her plan into action and held the turtle out. The slapshot turtle soared towards it, and bounced off the other's shell. The intern launched another, and the same thing happened. Jo laughed as she waited for another turtle.
Duncan, still dodging more projectiles, glanced over at his partner. "What are you doing?"
While still holding out the turtle, Jo grinned. "Just proving why I'm the best."
"Your plan isn't going to work."
Now Jo was annoyed. "And what would you know about having good plans, Smart Gu- OW!"
Jo dropped the turtle and clutched her left hand. There was a bite mark on her thumb. "How-"
"Hey, Jo." Chris butt in. "Maybe keeping one of the turtles within biting distance wasn't such a good idea."
Jo's surprise turned to annoyance, as she headed towards the spectator's zone.
Confessional (Jo): Her thumb was now all bandaged up. She was glaring at it intently (though it looked more like a pout). "I'm still a genius…" she mumbled.
Static
Mike and Zoey, meanwhile, were having very little issues with the challenge. Smartly, they had decided to work together and were treating the challenge like a dance. They both had their fingers locked together and had their chests pressed against each other. When an intern shot a turtle towards them, Mike stepped back with his left foot, while Zoey stepped forward with her right. They swiftly avoided the projectile, and did the same with the others.
Amy, still in a panic, saw what they were doing and got an idea. She ran towards the duo and stood behind them. They were too preoccupied to notice and continued their dance. Now with two people in front of her, Amy found it much easier to dodge the turtles. Though at one point, Zoey leaned back and Mike leaned forward, exposing the twin. An intern saw her and quickly shot a turtle in her direction. Amy's eyes widened, but she had the wherewithal to duck.
One of the other interns went for another shot, but quickly realized something. He glanced down. He had no more turtles to launch. He looked at the other interns and saw that they had run out as well.
Chris walked up. "Looks like the challenge is over." He looked over at the spectator's zone. "Since Samey and Jo were the only ones bit, and no duos were taken out, everyone is safe."
The competitors sighed, relieved to be done with the challenge.
Duncan looked over at his partner and grinned. "Looks like I'm not the weak link in this duo."
The other competitors laughed, as Jo grimaced.
Chris had allowed the competitors another break. Since there was no food left, all they could do was talk with one another.
Amy quickly took her sister and they walked to the other side of the box. "That last challenge was too close."
Samey sighed. "Yeah, sorry about that."
Amy put a hand to her sister's shoulder. "It's fine. We're still in this. But we need to make sure someone gets eliminated soon."
Samey raised an eyebrow. "How are we gonna do that? Unless someone loses an elimination challenge, the game will keep going."
"But there's still another way to get someone eliminated..." And she whispered her plan to Samey.
Confessional (Samey): She gave an uncomfortable look. "I'm still a little on the fence about this whole 'try to get someone else eliminated' thing." She thought for a moment, before shaking the feeling away. "But my sister's smart. Maybe I should trust her. She is family after all." She chuckled a bit, before it faded into an uncortable sigh.
Static
Sanders had come down from her elevated stage, and was standing outside the square. Duncan walked towards her.
"So…" Sanders asked, trying to think of what to say. "How's it going...babe?"
Duncan opened his mouth to speak, but stopped. He looked at Sanders weirdly. "Babe?"
The Cadet blushed a deep shade of red, and looked away. "Sorry, I just...I just thought that since we're in a relationship now, we should...call each other...that...sometimes."
Surprisingly, Duncan started laughing. Sanders turned back, curious. The Ex-Con looked at her, still chuckling. "Sorry...I just wasn't expecting that." He calmed down. "Honestly, it's fine...babe."
The two stared, then burst out into laughter. Once the chuckling ceased, Duncan spoke again. "Actually, I wanted to tell you that you don't have to always keep giving me the advantage for each challenge." He shot a thumb in Jo's direction. She was stretching by herself. "I think you're gonna cause Jo to pop a blood vessel, which would be hilarious- don't get me wrong- but I kinda need her for the other challenges."
Sanders smirked. "Sure thing."
Duncan smiled back. He still couldn't explain it, but Sanders was such an easy person to be around. He didn't have to walk around eggshells or feel like he was solving a puzzle. He could actually talk to someone, and get a straight answer.
The two heard footsteps, and turned. Zoey was walking up to them, with a big smile on her face. She stepped next to Duncan. "Thanks a bunch, Sanders." She said. The Cadet was confused, but Zoey continued. "I really didn't know what to do with Mike, but I'm glad you forced us to talk to each other. We really needed it."
Sanders still wasn't getting it, until she looked at Duncan. A smirk crept across her face, and she turned back to Zoey. "Actually...it wasn't my idea. It was Duncan's."
Zoey went wide eyed. She quickly spun her head towards the Ex-Con. Duncan wasn't looking at her. In fact, he was going through great efforts to not meet her gaze. Eventually, he sighed. "I...I owed you one." Zoey stared for a few more seconds. Duncan knew what was coming, and wasn't surprised when he felt two arms wrap around him. He couldn't help but smirk.
"Thank you, Duncan." Zoey whispered. "Thank you so much."
Sanders smiled warmly at the two. She saw Mike had been watching them. He looked noticeably calm.
Chris soon announced the end of the break and pointed towards Sanders. "This next challenge will be another advantage one." As Sanders set up the tiles, Chris explained what they'd be doing. "You'll all be playing a game of chicken fight. One person sits on your partner's shoulders, trying to knock down an opposing team. The bottom person will maneuver and keep the top person from falling, while also getting them in a good position to separate the other teams. Understood? I don't care." He pointed to the stand. "Sanders will reveal who will drive and who will push...right now."
Sanders had just placed the last tile, and she turned the poles over. Jo looked up and immediately let out a hearty laugh, slapping the back of her partner in the process. "Looks like I'm not the one carrying the team anymore, eh Mohawk?"
Duncan winced from the slap, as he stared at the tiles. Indeed, Jo was right. Duncan was gonna have to let Jo sit on his shoulders. He turned to his girlfriend. Really he mouthed, giving a confused look. Sanders playfully smirked, and shrugged. Duncan was already regretting his earlier choice of words.
Soon the competitors were ready. Amy was sitting on her sister's shoulder, while Mike carried Zoey. Duncan had just lifted Jo up. The Jockette punched her open palm. "Everyone of you is going down."
Chris sounded an air horn and the challenge began. The Twins immediately went to Mike and Zoey, trying to knock them down. Jo grinned, and was about to demand Duncan charge into battle, when she was suddenly dropped down. Within seconds, Duncan had lowered her to the ground and he, himself, was now standing upright. Jo froze for a few seconds, before turning back around. "What are you doing? We're- You just cost us the challenge!"
Duncan stared at her, confusingly. "I didn't cost us anything. It's not an elimination challenge. Why take the risk?"
Jo looked like she was about to blow a gasket. "I- You-" She shot a finger at the Ex-Con's chest. "You've messed with me for the last time...I'll...I'll...Ah, the hell with it." Without another word, she lunged at her partner. Duncan was surprised, and couldn't stop himself from being taken down. The two grappled and rolled around in the sand. Sanders watched on, concerned.
Zoey was still trying to push down Amy, when she saw Jo and Duncan. Her gaze lingered for a few seconds.
Amy noticed this, and looked down at her sister. "Now!"
Samey was confused. "Now, what?"
"Win the challenge for us." Amy clarified.
"But I-"
"Just do it!" Amy grabbed onto Zoey's wrists
Samey wasn't sure what she meant, but didn't want to ask again. Thinking quickly, she raised her foot slightly. Amy was keeping them upright, so her sister didn't lose her balance. The Twin positioned her leg and brought her leg down hard. Right onto Mike's foot. The Spikey-haired competitor cringed, and yelped. He picked up his foot slightly. That snapped Zoey from her gaze.
"Are you alright, Mike?" She looked down.
Before Mike could answer, Amy let go of the Indie Chick's wrists and pushed her back. She wouldn't have fallen, had it not been for one thing. Mike was still feeling the effects of the stomp, and with Zoey being thrown back, and his foot off the ground, it was no wonder what happened next. The sudden change of weight was too much for Mike and he couldn't keep himself upright. Zoey, meanwhile, felt herself falling backwards. Mike hopped back a few times, but couldn't stop his momentum. Zoey turned slightly and ended up landing on her shoulder. She winced and clutched it.
Samey watched, in shock, at what just happened. Mike held his foot, but quickly realized something else. He sat up and scrambled over to his girlfriend. "Are you ok, Zoey?"
The Indie Chick sighed and pushed herself up, with her good arm. "I'm...I think I'm fine. I just landed on it awkwardly."
Mike sighed, relieved. From the bottom of the stage, Chris was watching the two. He then looked over at Jo and Duncan, who were still fighting. He smirked, then turned to the final team. "Amy. Samey. Under normal circumstances, the carrier is not allowed to hit another carrier. You'd be disqualified and we'd go onto the next challenge. But...that doesn't really matter right now." He paused. "A member of one of the teams exited the box, and that means they've been...eliminated."
Jo, who was on top of Duncan, about to punch him, snapped out of her anger. Duncan, who had a death grip on the Jockette's wrists, did the same. They both looked around. Neither of them had their arms or legs outside the box.
"Did you step outside the box?" Jo demanded, pointing at her partner.
Duncan pushed her hand away. "How am I supposed to know?" He quipped. "You punched me in the eye like ten times."
Zoey rubbed her shoulder, making sure it wasn't injured. Then a thought struck her. She turned her head, and looked behind her. The hand that she had used to prop herself up, was, in fact, just outside the box. Meaning only one thing…
"Zoey and Mike." Chris pointed. "It is my unfortunate task to inform you that...you've been eliminated from the game." The shock and realization suddenly hit them, and the other competitors. Duncan watched them, eyes wide and shocked. Jo, well...Jo was just happy it wasn't her.
Amy, who was back on the ground, looked excitedly at Samey. "They're gone. We're in the final five!" And she hugged her sister. Samey didn't react to it though. She was still processing what she just did.
Zoey looked ashamed. She just stared at her hand, not saying anything.
"Zoey…" The Indie Chick turned around and came face to face with her boyfriend. Mike gave a sympathetic, but still sad, look. Before Zoey could say anything, Mike cut her off. "It's my fault. This wouldn't have happened if I hadn't fallen." He turned, and glared at the Twins. Amy didn't notice, or didn't care, but Samey looked very uncomfortable.
"Mike." The Spiky Haired competitor looked back. This time, it was Zoey's turn to speak. "It wasn't your fault. I put my hand on the outside." Before Mike could argue, Zoey interrupted. "Besides…" She took his hand, and smiled. "If I had to be eliminated with anyone...I'm glad it was with you."
Mike beamed, and the two gazed into each other's eyes for a few seconds. Zoey then wrapped her arms around her boyfriend's neck and took him down into the sand with her. Mike was surprised at first, until Zoey started laughing. He couldn't help but join in.
Duncan watched the happy couple. He was definitely bummed that Zoey was eliminated, but he also felt really happy that he had helped reunite the two. He figured it was a good time to head off, and he turned around. As soon as he did, a pair of arms wrapped around his shoulders and neck. He tensed up, but relaxed once he realized who it was.
"That was a really cool thing you just did." Sanders said, slightly releasing her hug. "And...and, I'll be honest, I'm really glad it wasn't you that got eliminated."
Duncan chuckled, and smiled. "Thanks...me too." He hesitated, but decided to return the hug. Then he released it, once something caught his eye. He marched over and glared. "Hey...Jo." The Jockette turned. "You wanna finish that fight? I think I have a few more teeth I can knock down your throat."
Jo was surprised, but gave a devilish grin. She wiped her lip, sending a small splotch of blood onto the ground. "Gladly." She went to tackle her opponent, but Duncan saw it coming. He wrapped his arm around her neck, catching her in a headlock, and taking her down to the ground.
As the two wrestled, Sanders just watched in amusement.
Later that night, at the Dock of Shame, Mike and Zoey stood next to each other. They looked out at the Boat of Losers, where an impatient Chef was waiting to take them away. Then they turned to the competitors, ready to say goodbye. Duncan, who was now sporting a few bandages, and Sanders were both there and, for some reason, so was Jo, who had a bandage wrapped around her head. Both she and Duncan had a black eye. Mike and Zoey turned to each other, both clearly confused by the Jockette's presence, but shrugged nonetheless.
Duncan was the first one they walked up to. He and Zoey shared a smile. The Indie Chick then held her hand out. The Ex-Con stared confusingly at it.
"What?" He exclaimed. "What's this crap? I don't even get a hug!?"
Zoey laughed and put her hand down. "I knew it. I knew you wanted one."
Duncan froze, processing what just happened to him. Then he chuckled too. "I taught you well."
He stretched his arms out, and they embraced in a tight hug. "I'm gonna miss you." Zoey said, tightening her grip . Then she glanced up. "We're totally gonna do a double date, right?"
Duncan gave an uncomfortable look, then turned to Sanders. She thought for a moment, before shrugging. The Ex-Con looked back down at Zoey. "I...I don't think I'm ready for that just yet."
Zoey chuckled and released the hug. The two shared one more smile, then Zoey went over to say goodbye to Sanders, while Mike walked up to Duncan.
"Thanks for everything, Duncan." He said. "I'm sorry for all the trouble we put you through."
Duncan smirked. "No worries, man." He held out his fist. Mike's face lit up, and he returned the fist bump. He started to walk past, but Duncan put his hand on his shoulder, stopping him. "And...Mike." He whispered, so only he could hear. "Don't let her go." Mike was surprised, and glanced at him. Duncan sighed. "Don't tell Zoey I said this, but...she gives the best hugs."
Mike's shocked face slowly turned to a small smile. "I won't Duncan. And I know."
The Ex-Con nodded and gave a few pats on Mike's shoulder. The Spikey Haired competitor walked to Zoey, who was just finishing up with Sanders. Once they finished their goodbyes with her, Jo was the only one left.
"Well, Jo…" Zoey said, awkwardly. "...I'll admit I'm a little surprised you're here, but it's a nice change."
Jo scoffed. "Actually, I'm not here for you either of you guys, I really don't care that you're leaving."
Zoey and Mike's hopeful faces fell. "Well, it wouldn't be Jo if she didn't insult us." Mike mumbled.
The Jockette groaned. "Fine, I'll admit that a small, and I mean…" She put up her thumb and index finger and held them close. "...VERY small, part of me will miss having you numbskulls around."
Mike and Zoey looked at each other, and shrugged. That was probably the best they were gonna get.
Soon, the two came to the boat. With a confident nod, the two held hands and stepped onboard.
Chef rolled his eyes. "Finally…" He mumbled. He blasted the horn, and accelerated forward. As the boat drove off, the couple waved to the other competitors. Duncan and Sanders waved back, while Jo stared, snickering to herself. Once the boat was out of sight, she looked at them. "Hey…Duncan?"
The Ex-Con went wide eyed, and he looked at the Jockette. "Did you just call me by my actual name?"
Jo ignored the question, and tried to hold back her wide grin, as she stifled another laugh. "You do realize that with Little Miss Niceness and Spikey gone…" She paused, letting out a small laugh.
"What?" Duncan said, annoyed.
"...you're the only dude left." Jo couldn't hold in her laughter anymore. "You're stuck with nothing but chicks." She fell onto the dock, clutching her gut.
Duncan and Sanders watched her, confused. The Ex-Con looked at his girlfriend, then turned forward. He thought for a moment, then went wide eyed. "She's right...I am the only guy left."
Sanders looked down at the still dying of laughter, Jo, and smirked. "Do you really count Jo as a chick?"
Duncan couldn't help but laugh, and he smiled at the Cadet. "Good one." He hesitated for a second, but reluctantly put his arm around Sanders' shoulders. The Cadet was surprised at first, but quickly broke out into a smile. She leaned her head on the Ex-Con's shoulder. Duncan didn't immediately look comfortable, but he breathed in and relaxed.
From behind them, Chris jumped in front of another camera. "Alright, so it looks like Duncan and Sanders are here to stay. And Jo…" He turned and watched the Jockette, who was struggling to stand up. He faced the camera again. "Hopefully, she'll remember to breathe. Goodbye Mike and Zoey. You two deserve each other, and...that's why you got eliminated together. We're in the final five now. Who's gonna step up and push their way to the finale? And who's gonna run out of gas and fall victim to another elimination? Stay tuned for another spectacular, action-packed episode of...Total...Drama...Legends!"
So, as most people figured out, Mike and Zoey were the ones going. Figured it would be a good time. I'm sorta anticipating mixed opinions on how the two reconciled. I had no intention of breaking them up, nor was I going to keep them as "just friends." They're too lovey dovey, and Zoey doesn't seem like the type to be mad at someone for too long. I'll tell you what, I'm gonna miss writing Zoey and Duncan together. They were easily my favorite duo to write for. Mike...not as much. I like him fine, but he was probably my least favorite to write for. Originally, Mike was supposed to keep his suspicions a secret, until this chapter. Zoey would then laugh it off and the two would reconcile. I realized that wasn't a good idea because I'd basically be writing the same thing every chapter leading up to this. Zoey is suspicious and Mike won't say anything. I also thought the ending was kinda half-assedI am glad I changed it.
Hopefully the next chapter won't take as long to get out. There is a later chapter that I'm really excited for, so hopefully that'll give me more motivation to write the next one. I'll see y'all next time!
Oh, and since it was asked before: What was with the weird gender ratio? To be honest, that's just how it came out. I don't think I realized it until after I was done with the elimination order.
