A/N: Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of the love on the first chapter. This second chapter was originally going to be smut, but I got a bit of a plot in my head and couldn't let it go. So, it looks like this story is turning into an actual story that will ultimately end in smut. Anyways, I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think in the comments!
A few days had passed since Teddy and Amelia had shared that kiss on the roof, and Teddy couldn't stop thinking about the brunette surgeon. The way her skin had been so soft; much softer than it was when she had kissed men. The way that Amelia had tasted like coffee and the cinnamon roll she had eaten for dinner. It reminded her of kissing Allison, only it had been so long that she wasn't sure if kissing Amelia was the same as kissing Allison, or just kissing another woman.
Teddy was once again lost in her thoughts about Allison and Amelia when the elevator doors pinged open on the second floor. Teddy was shaken out of these thoughts when the subject of her recent daydream stepped onto the elevator.
"Hey, Altman. Long time no see." Amelia said with a smile as she entered the elevator and pushed the button for the fifth floor. Teddy returned the smile.
"Sorry. I've been really busy since I've been back. Seems like Cardio forgot how to function without me. I thought Pierce's head was going to explode yesterday." The cardio surgeon explained with a laugh. Amelia laughed as well, leaning back against the wall and glancing quickly at the blonde.
The two surgeons stood in silence for a moment, the tension growing by the second. Finally, Teddy couldn't take it anymore and reached forward, hitting the emergency stop button. Teddy turned to face the blonde woman as the elevator came to a halt between floors.
"So, about what happened the other day…" The cardio surgeon trailed off. Amelia shrugged, shaking her head.
"Don't worry about it. We don't have to talk about it. I was out of line. It won't happen again." The neurosurgeon said quickly, brushing off the blonde woman's attempt to talk about what had happened on the roof. The cardio surgeon frowned, taking a step closer to the younger woman.
"What if I wanted it to happen again?" Teddy asked quietly, placing a hand on the wall behind Amelia. The brunette woman took a deep breath, trying to calm the butterflies dancing around in her stomach.
"Is that so?" Amelia asked coolly, eyes flicking down to glance at the older woman's lips. Teddy smiled, leaning in to meet Amelia's mouth with her own. Amelia sighed into the kiss, hands reaching around to rest on Teddy's lower back as the cardio surgeon's tongue swept across the brunette's lower lip, asking for access. Amelia moaned, opening her mouth for Teddy's tongue.
"Fuck, Altman." Amelia said as she pulled away a few seconds later, catching her breath. Her whole body felt like it was on fire. "Anyone ever tell you you're really good at that?" The brunette woman asked, leaning in to pull Teddy into another kiss. The cardio surgeon smiled into the kiss, hands finding purchase in Amelia's dark hair.
"I am, aren't I?" Teddy laughed, pulling away briefly before once again kissing the younger woman. Amelia hummed her approval.
"Wonderful, really." Amelia said with a laugh, hands attempting to pull Teddy even closer to her. Teddy froze at the compliment. She felt her heartbeat quicken, and suddenly the elevator seemed very small; it felt like the elevator was so small that she barely had room to breathe. The blonde let go of Amelia, taking a step back and hitting the emergency button to get the elevator moving again.
"You okay, Altman?" Amelia asked, suddenly very concerned about the older woman. Teddy nodded her head quickly, eyes never leaving the elevator doors as she tried to regulate her breathing.
"Yeah I…I just remembered I have to…check on a patient." She explained as the doors pinged open on the fifth floor. "I…I'll see you later." Teddy added quickly, walking briskly out of the elevator and down the hall without glancing back at the confused woman still in the elevator.
Amelia stood frozen to the spot as the elevator doors closed in front of her and it began moving downwards again. She wasn't sure what to do; thirty seconds ago, she had been sharing one of the hottest kisses she had had in a long time, and now she was standing alone in the elevator. Amelia sighed loudly, attempting to fix her disheveled scrubs as she wondered aloud,
"What the hell just happened?"
Amelia was still stuck on that thought – and on the kiss that had preceded it – a few hours later as she walked out of the operating room. Normally after a successful surgery, Amelia would be flying high; the adrenaline from having her hands in someone's brain, the satisfaction that came with knowing that she had just helped save someone's life. But today was different. Today, she just couldn't seem to shake the thought of Teddy making out with her in the elevator and then running away in a hurry.
The neurosurgeon was brought back to the scrub room when the pager on her hip beeped loudly. Glancing down at the noisy device, Amelia sighed.
"Son of a bitch." The brunette doctor said quietly. The message was from Teddy; asking her to meet her in one of the on-call rooms in half an hour. Was Teddy really paging her for what she thought she was? Sighing again, Amelia reached out a hand and grabbed the arm of a passing resident.
"Hey, Schmitt. Page Dr. Pierce and tell her to meet me in Room 314 as soon as she can." She told the resident. Schmitt nodded, hurrying off to page the cardio surgeon.
"You paged?" Maggie asked about ten minutes later, walking into the empty patient room to find Amelia sitting in a chair by the window. Amelia nodded, gesturing to the door. Maggie closed it behind her, leaning against the wall.
"I need to tell you something, but you can't tell Meredith." The neurosurgeon said, wringing her hands together. Maggie took a step toward the brunette.
"Amelia, I really don't know if I should –" Maggie began to protest before she was cut off by Amelia.
"I think I'm about to have sex with Teddy Altman." Amelia said quickly, her eyes wide. Maggie blinked.
"Okay, yeah. I'm not going to tell Mer about that." Maggie said, shaking her head. She paused for a moment, one question racing through her head. "I…are you even interested in women?" the cardiothoracic surgeon continued. Amelia laughed, leaning back in the chair.
"Did Mer really not tell you?" The neurosurgeon asked, raising an eyebrow. Maggie shook her head. Amelia sighed, rolling her eyes.
"Jesus Christ. Real secrets spread around this hospital like wildfire, but this non-secret can't seem to get farther than Meredith." Amelia complained. Maggie just stared at the other woman.
"Why are you telling me this?" Maggie asked finally, taking a seat on the end of the bed in front of the woman.
"Cause I'm freaking out a little and you always have something reassuring to say!" Amelia exclaimed, jumping to her feet, and beginning to pace around the room.
"I…I don't know. I, um, what makes you think that you're about to have sex with Altman?" Maggie asked, her eyes following Amelia as she paced back and forth. Amelia stopped walking for a moment, looking down at her feet. She couldn't bring herself to make eye contact with her sister.
"Because we kissed a few days ago on the roof, and then we had this moment earlier in the elevator that was…confusing…and now she's paged me to one of the on-call rooms." She explained, glancing up at the woman sitting on the bed. The younger woman smiled knowingly.
"Oh yeah. You're about to have sex." Maggie said with a laugh. Amelia sighed.
"Maggie! That's not helpful!" The neurosurgeon exclaimed, running a hand through her hair.
"I'm sorry! I really don't know what to tell you. Do you want to sleep with her?" The cardio surgeon asked. Amelia nodded, looking at her feet. God, did ever she want to sleep with her.
"Then what's the problem?" Maggie asked. The brunette woman shrugged.
"I…I don't know! It just feels…wrong. Altman's only been back for a few weeks, and the whole Allison thing practically killed her. I don't want to do anything to make that worse, or to scare her away." She explained quietly, still looking at her feet. Maggie frowned.
"Then tell her that. Tell her that you're worried that you might mess things up with her or her recovery or whatever. I know I'd appreciate it if someone I was going to maybe – or definitely – sleep with cared enough to tell me that." The cardio surgeon said, leaning forward to try and make eye contact with her sister. Amelia nodded, sitting back down in the chair across from Maggie before finally looking up to meet her sister's gaze.
"But what if she says she's okay but then we sleep together and she's not okay?" Amelia said, nervously pulling her bottom lip between her teeth.
"Well, let her make the call. I'm sure she knows what she can handle." Maggie reassured her, leaning forward and placing a hand on top of Amelia's fidgeting one. "Also, you don't have to sleep with her if you think it's a bad idea or too soon or whatever. You can also say no." Maggie continued, squeezing the nervous woman's hand reassuringly. Amelia sighed, nodding her head slowly.
"Yeah, you're right." The older woman said, running a hand through her hair again. "Ugh. Okay, I'm going to go find Altman. It's been like half an hour since she paged me." Amelia continued, standing up and running her hands over her scrubs to try and smooth them out before making her way to the door. "Thank you for your help, Maggie." She added over her shoulder as she reached for the doorknob.
"Amelia, wait." Maggie exclaimed from behind her. Amelia paused, turning around to face her sister. Maggie walked over to the older woman, smiling softly.
"I don't think I actually said…just…thank you for telling me. Even if it wasn't a secret. Just…thanks." The cardio surgeon told her sister sincerely, fidgeting with the edge of her lab coat.
"You're a good sister, Pierce." Amelia said with a smile, pulling the younger woman in for a hug. Maggie returned the embrace, letting out a breath she hadn't realized she had been holding.
"Let me know how it goes." She said as she let go of the brunette. "Well…maybe the kid friendly version of how it goes. I still have to work with Teddy…and live with you." Maggie added quickly. Amelia nodded, laughing as she opened the door and began to walk down the hall. Maggie turned the other way before practically running into Meredith at the nurse's station. The blonde woman smiled at her sister, looking between Maggie and Amelia.
"Hey Mer." Maggie greeted her, attempting to sound casual.
"What's going on?" Meredith asked, raising an eyebrow suspiciously. Maggie turned around, glancing behind her at Amelia's retreating form.
"Oh, Amelia and I were just…" The cardiothoracic surgeon trailed off, eyes darting around the hallway. "You know, you probably don't want to know." She said with a wave of her hand. Meredith smiled.
"Is it something dirty?" The blonde asked. Maggie nodded, running a hand through her hair. At least that wasn't a lie.
"Yeah, you're right. I don't want to know." Meredith said with a laugh before turning and walking into a patient's room.
It was about fifteen minutes later when Amelia finally made it to the on-call room Teddy had paged her to. She would have been there about fourteen minutes earlier, had it not been for an over-eager intern that wanted her to look at a patient's scans for a potential brain bleed. As it often was with over-eager interns, there hadn't been any noticeable bleeding on the scan, and Amelia had just been left more annoyed than when it had started.
Amelia paused outside of the on-call room, taking a second to stare at the door. Was she really about to do this? Was she really about to go into this on-call room and sleep with Altman? Well, whatever was about to happen. Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, Amelia raised a hand and softly knocked on the door. When there was no response, Amelia tried the handle. Finding it unlocked, she opened the door and was surprised to see that the room was dark.
"Altman?" The neurosurgeon asked, squinting as her eyes adjusted to the dark on-call room. There was a brief pause, before Teddy's voice echoed from somewhere in the dark.
"I'm here." She said quietly. Another brief pause.
"So…you paged me?" Amelia asked hesitantly, still scanning the dark room for the blonde surgeon. After a moment, her eyes landed on Teddy's dark form huddled on the bottom bunk.
"Yeah I…I'm sorry. I don't know why I paged. Just…sorry. You can forget about it." Teddy's tearful voice said quietly. Amelia raised an eyebrow.
"Okay…that doesn't sound good." Amelia said, a note of suspicion in her voice. The neurosurgeon leant back, flicking the lock on the door before walking over to sit on the edge of the bed. "You want to tell me what's going on?" The brunette asked the woman stretched out on the bed behind her. Teddy was silent for a moment, still facing the wall.
"It's…it's dumb. I'm just…having a hard day and…" The blonde surgeon trailed off, her voice catching in her throat. Amelia frowned, hearing the tears in the older woman's voice.
"Talk to me, Teddy. What happened?" She asked quietly. Teddy sniffed, wiping at her eyes.
"When we were…in the elevator…" The cardio surgeon trailed off, not sure of how to explain to Amelia what was going on without scaring her off completely. The last thing that Teddy wanted was to scare the younger woman.
"Teddy, if that's what this is about…nothing has to happen if you don't want it to. I shouldn't have kissed you to begin with. It…it was out of line, and it shouldn't have happened. It absolutely doesn't have to happen again." Amelia reassured the blonde. Teddy shook her head, sitting up.
"Oh, God, Amelia…no. I…I definitely want it to happen again. It's just that…when I kissed you earlier in the elevator, it…it reminded of when I was with…Allison. And I've just…been having a bad trauma day or whatever." The blonde attempted to explain, wiping away more tears. "I'm sorry. It's stupid. You don't have to stay. I don't want to upset you too." Teddy continued, laying back down on the bed and facing away from the brunette. Amelia frowned.
"Okay. First of all, it's not stupid." The neurosurgeon said, rolling her eyes. "Second of all, is it okay if I touch you? Just on the arm. Nothing improper, I promise." Amelia continued, hand hovering over Teddy's arm waiting for her consent. The blonde nodded, and Amelia gently set her hand on the older woman's arm.
"I'm so sorry that you're having a hard time. The last thing I wanted to do was upset you." The brunette surgeon explained, squeezing Teddy's arm. "That's actually what I came in here to tell you. That I don't want to do anything that makes you upset or makes your recovery more difficult." Amelia added, gently rubbing the upset woman's arm. Teddy let out a sob before covering her mouth with a hand.
"What do you need? I can go find Owen if you want, or –" Amelia began, before she was cut off by Teddy abruptly sitting up.
"No!" The blonde exclaimed. Noticing Amelia flinch at the loud noise, Teddy's demeanor softened. "Sorry. I didn't mean to yell. Just, please don't get Owen. He's still being weird about Allison." She explained. Amelia nodded, relaxing slightly as Teddy laid back down on the bed. The room was quiet for a moment, the only sound coming from commotion out in the hall.
"Would you stay with me for a bit?" Teddy asked quietly, breaking the silence. Snapped out of her thoughts, Amelia smiled.
"Of course." The brunette said softly. Kicking off her shoes, she swung her legs onto the edge of the bed. "But you have to scooch over so I can fit." Amelia told Teddy. The blonde did as she was told, rolling onto her back and sliding closer to the wall. Amelia closed her eyes as she relaxed into the space next to the blonde, her arm lightly brushing against Teddy's.
If this had happened even ten minutes ago, Amelia's brain would have taken the electricity she felt from the slight physical contact as a sign that she indeed wanted to jump the woman's bones. However, seeing Teddy so visibly upset made all those feelings go away instantly. She may have wanted to sleep with the cardio surgeon, but she didn't want to do it like this. If they were going to do this, she wanted them both to enjoy it; to enjoy each other. More than anything, Amelia just wanted Teddy to be happy.
"You said I was wonderful." Teddy said quietly, sounding very far away. Shaken out of her thoughts, Amelia opened her eyes, rolling over to face the cardio surgeon.
"Hm?" She asked. Teddy sighed.
"In the elevator today. You said I was wonderful…Allison used to say that. That I was wonderful." The blonde surgeon explained softly, still not looking at Amelia.
"Oh, Teddy. I'm so sorry. I didn't know. I never would have said that." The younger woman apologized quickly, grasping Teddy's hand in her own. Teddy shook her head.
"I know. It's not your fault. How could you have known?" She said, brushing off the apology.
"Well, I'm still sorry. I'll find another word to describe you from now on." Amelia smiled, squeezing the older woman's hand. "Like…amazing. Or brilliant. Or beautiful." She said, bringing their joint hands up to gently kiss the back of Teddy's knuckles. Teddy laughed softly.
"Sweet talker." The cardio surgeon said with a smile, rolling her eyes. Amelia smiled, letting go of the older woman's hand and rolling over onto her back. The two women sat in silence for a moment before Amelia spoke again.
"You know, when you originally paged me to this on-call room, I definitely thought we were about to have sex." She said quietly, making both of the women laugh. "So did Maggie, for that matter." Amelia added, still laughing.
"You told Pierce?" Teddy asked, suddenly serious.
"I…yes. Well, just some of it. I was kind of freaking out a little bit." Amelia said with a laugh. Feeling Teddy tense up beside her, she stopped laughing and continued. "She won't tell anyone, Teddy." The brunette reassured. Teddy nodded, taking a deep breath, and letting out a sigh.
"I know. I'm sorry. It's just…my automatic response with stuff like this." The cardio surgeon said quietly. "I promise I'm working on it." She continued. Amelia smiled sadly.
"It's okay. I probably shouldn't have said anything to anyone without asking you first." She told the blonde. Now it was Teddy's turn to smile sadly.
"She's your sister. Plus, everyone kind of already found out about me liking women after the whole Allison thing so…it's not like it's really a secret." The older woman said with a shrug. Slowly, Teddy moved closer to the brunette surgeon, letting her head rest in the crook of Amelia's shoulder and joining their hands.
"For what it's worth…I think I want to sleep with you too. Just…I think I need to take things a bit slower." Teddy said quietly, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks at the thought. Amelia smiled, placing a soft kiss on the top of the older woman's head.
"Of course." The brunette told her, smiling into her hair. "Would like to go to dinner with me sometime, Teddy?" Amelia continued. Teddy smiled, lifting her head off Amelia's shoulder to look at the younger woman.
"I'd love to." She said, leaning forward to place a soft kiss on Amelia's lips.
