Student housing

Two years later

Elsa had hoped she'd seen the end of the Kent State traffic.

She'd happily learned the bus routes back when she'd first started attending. With college in her rearview, it was back to the frustration of rush hour in a college town. Well, technically it was the same traffic, bus or car, but at least in a bus you could play on your phone the whole time.

The sun was low in the sky by the time she made it to their block. The lot next to their apartment was thankfully not half as congested as the streets – it seemed the college had over-appropriated student housing from the town.

She tugged at her collar as she pulled into her spot. She was lucky, she knew, to have a job related to her major so soon after graduating, but the dress code was crazily uptight. She barely had enough nice outfits to make it through the week, and only after cribbing from Elsa Schneider's wardrobe. She'd be free of the starchy shirt soon enough, though.

She stepped inside, dragged herself up the stairs, and pulled open the door. No need to fumble for her keys – her roommate had gotten into the habit of unlocking the door just before she got home.

Anna, sitting on the couch, turned to face her with a broad smile. "Hey, Elsa," she said. "How was work?"

"Dreadful," Elsa said. "Stressful as all hell." Yet now that she was standing there, she couldn't seem to wipe a smile off her face.

"Oh no," Anna said. She patted the couch next to her. "What happened?"

"Same old stuff," Elsa said, walking towards Anna. "The client wanted a change a week before we shipped, supervisor and PM were eating at me from both sides, and Garrett got the best parking spot again."

She plopped down onto the couch. Anna put her hands on Elsa's shoulders and began to knead. Elsa tilted her head back and sighed as, in one motion, Anna pulled off her suit jacket and delicately placed it on the coat rack. "Really," Anna said, voice soft and sympathetic. "Tell me all about it."

In general, life had grown more unpredictable once Elsa got a job, but some things were constant. On some days, they would go to the gym after she got back from work, and others they'd take a walk. This was not one of those days.

Elsa's head lolled back, nestling itself even further into Anna's shoulder. Anna took this as a signal to mute the TV, yet left the image on to illuminate the now dark room. They had both put away their laptops already, meaning their bed was merely a few groggy steps away.

The carnage of the room was relatively well contained, which Anna felt proud of. The Chinese food containers that once contained their dinner were stacked neatly on the end table, joined by only their two most recent cups. Elsa had cleaned up her act in the past year or so, but they both knew who was truly to thank for it.

Through no conscious actions of either sister, Elsa had slowly shed all of her formal clothes as the night went on. She was now covered by only her underclothes and Anna's arms, the latter of which were wrapped snugly around her waist. Anna herself was down only her jeans, for no reason beyond laziness.

She nudged Elsa. "Bedtime," she muttered into her ear as Elsa slowly returned to the realm of the living, if only for a short while.

"Mmh," Elsa said in what she had come to understand was an affirmative grunt.

Neither one of them had the energy to carry the other, so it was a sleepy shuffle that brought each of them to the bed. Elsa relieved Anna of her shirt, and they both crawled into bed. It was too warm for pajamas, so Anna had the pleasure of viewing Elsa in her black lacy underwear for her remaining thirty seconds or so of consciousness for the night.

"Good night," Elsa mumbled.

Anna smiled. "Good night."

They wouldn't remember any of their dreams the next morning, but that was okay. With the lives they were now living, how could any dream hope to compete?
