Saturday morning was bright and sunny. The light coming into the room through the crack in his curtains was what woke Tony. He blinked a few times to clear the sleep from his eyes, and then smiled. David was really here, and Tony couldn't wait to take him out for a fun day. Breakfast was going to be first, though, so he quickly dressed and made his way to the kitchen.

"Good morning, Tony," said David. He was seated on the couch with a book.

"What are you doing up so early?" Tony asked.

"It's eight-thirty, Tony. That's not early," laughed David.

"It is certainly early on the weekend."

"You just need to sleep earlier," David declared as he put the book down and followed Tony to the kitchen.

"I was asleep before ten, thank you," Tony responded, laughing. He put a pan on the stove. "Now, do you want eggs and bacon or pancakes?"

"Pancakes! With smiley faces?"

"My favourite," grinned Tony as he quickly mixed up pancake batter and started frying.

"Tony?"

"Yeah, David?"

"Why did you really take me for the weekend?"

Tony didn't answer right away. He finished cooking the pancakes, put them on plates and came over to the table. Once he was sitting across the table from David, Tony said,

"Well, Jessie mentioned that you weren't able to be placed in a foster home on such short notice. I really didn't want you stuck in that shelter all weekend... Plus, I really like having you around. You make me smile, I'm happy when you're here."

David smiled. "I like you, too, Tony."

"David, how would you feel if someone adopted you once this case is over?"

"Is that someone you?"

"I don't know, maybe. Would you be happy living with a new family?"

"I guess so. I mean, they can't be worse than my dad, right?"

"No, I guess not."

"Would I be allowed to take all my stuff with me?"

"I think so. If there's anything you need at your house, I can get it for you."

David smiled again. "If I can have all my stuff, I will be okay anywhere."

The rest of breakfast passed in relative silence, and before he knew it, Tony had gotten David ready for the day. They were walking along the street together when David asked,

"Tony, are you married?"

"No," answered Tony. "I did meet someone a while ago. Her name is Mandy. Would you like to meet her one day?"

"Is she nice?"

"Very."

"Okay, I would like to meet her. Thank you, Tony."

With a big smile, Tony said, "You don't have to thank me, David. I would love for you to be a part of my life, and that means that Mandy needs to know you."

"What if she doesn't like me?"

"Then she can go away. You are way more important to me than a girl."

"But, that would make you sad."

"Maybe for a bit, but then I would find someone else and I'll be okay. If you're with me, I will be absolutely fine." Tony pointed to a park. "What do you think of that?"

David looked over. "A fair? Yay! Can we go, Tony? Please?"

"Definitely. I was hoping that you'd be interested. Come on." He took David's hand and led the child into the brightly coloured fair. The park was empty of people at nine-thirty in the morning, and it was perfect for the two of them to enjoy themselves.

"What's first, Tony?" asked David as he glanced around the park.

"Why don't you choose?" Tony said, smiling.

David looked around again, then pointed to a sign. "The hall of mirrors might be fun. Let's go there first!"

Nodding, Tony led his young charge to the entrance for the hall of mirrors. He paid the fee for the tickets and they walked inside. Tony smiled when David started running from mirror to mirror, squealing with delight. The Hall of Mirrors wasn't his favourite place at fairs, but he would suffer through it for David.

"Tony! Look!" David called out from somewhere in the maze of mirrors. "I found the exit! And, there's now three of me!" David added with a giggle.

Tony rounded a few corners and laughed. David was dancing around in one spot, his three reflections copying him. It was comical.

"Nice moves, David," said Tony. "What are you doing?"

"All of my reflections joined in for a dance party. Come and join us," laughed David.

Shaking his head, Tony went over and stood behind David, throwing in his own terrible dance moves. A few glorious minutes passed, then Tony took David's hand and led him out of the exit.

"Where to next?" Tony asked as they walked around the fairgrounds.

"The games?" David suggested, pointing to a colourful booth.

"Great plan." Tony looked at David, a cheeky smile on his face. "I hope you can beat me..." And they ran off to the first of the game booths.
