Never Leave Me
They didn't have long left, he knew he'd hate himself if he didn't get there in time to help. Patrick was flying through the air as fast as the jetpack could go, he was so close to the volcano now. So close to reuniting with his friends and getting to apologise to SpongeBob.
He never should have left, never should have let the sardines' praise inflate his ego. How could he abandon his friends when they only had a couple of days left?
He gasped as a green beam of light shot past him and into the volcano, the mountain shook terribly as an avalanche began. His eyes scanned feverishly over the terrain, looking for the only two people up there.
Why couldn't he see them?
He finally found Sandy, she was reaching out? His eyes followed her arms and he suddenly felt sick.
SpongeBob was falling!
He could make it! He knew he could make it! He shot towards his best friend.
"SpongeBob!" He called triumphantly, SpongeBob look at him in giddy relief.
"Patrick!" He cheered as he fell, he reached his hand out.
Patrick continued on his path ready to catch him, he was so close!
He missed. He felt the wind rush as his friend fell past him, he saw as relief turned to shock and those soft blue eyes widened to the size of dinner plates. Both boys screamed as SpongeBob fell into the rock pile below.
Red pooled around him quickly, his eyes were stuck wide open. A few more rocks fell on top of him, partially burying his lower half.
His lack of reaction told him he was dead. Patrick hadn't got there in time.
"SpongeBob!" The pink haired boy screamed as he sat up on his bed. He panted, wiping sweat from his face.
He had to find SpongeBob, had to check he was still alive.
He ran out of his home to find it was going dark, he ran past the Pineapple house. He knew where his friend should be.
He sprinted down the road, not even apologising when he bowled over a passer-by. His mind was on one thing only, he needed to know he got there in time.
It had to have just been a dream, he was sure he remembered catching his friend. Making up and saving the town!
They couldn't have done it without him!
Deep down, a voice pointed out the town wouldn't be there right now if he had failed but Patrick found it hard to believe.
Tears poured from his eyes in his panicked state, he continued his run.
He finally saw what he was looking for – the Krusty Krab. Three figures were grouped outside it, they started walking in his direction.
He stumbled as his eyes fell on the shortest figure, he was bouncing between the other two happily – that could only be one person.
He couldn't speak, he couldn't breathe so he just kept running towards that warm glow he knew so well.
Mr Krabs and Squidward yelled in alarm as Patrick's full weight barreled into their fry cook, SpongeBob wheezed as he was winded by large, strong arms. Patrick had enough sense to not let himself knock the smaller boy off his feet lest he hurt him.
"P-Patrick!?" SpongeBob gasped as he felt his friend snuggle into him, crying and shaking. He was quick to wrap his freckled arms around him in return, he rubbed his back gently. "Hey? What's going on?"
Patrick still couldn't find his voice, he just sniffled and hugged him tighter. SpongeBob winced but didn't complain.
"It's ok…" SpongeBob shushed as sobs shook his friend's frame, "It's ok… just tell me what happened…"
Patrick stayed silent.
"Maybe ye should let him go lad?" Mr Krabs put a gentle hand on Patrick's back, "I think yer hurtin' 'im."
Patrick violently shoved SpongeBob away in panic, luckily Squidward caught the boy before he could fall over. The pink-haired boy stared in fear at his friend as he held his hands against his chest, afraid to touch him again. How could he be so stupid? He'd hurt his friend!
"Patrick!" Squidward scolded as he placed SpongeBob back onto his feet. "What is wrong with you!?"
SpongeBob stepped towards his panicked best friend.
"It's ok! You didn't hurt me!" He insisted gently, "I'm all good, see?"
He twirled and smiled.
Patrick just nodded shakily; SpongeBob noticed his knees were trembling terribly. He looked like he was about to fall.
"C'mon buddy," He took his friend's hand as he pulled him to sit down on the path with him, "Let's sit down for a sec."
Patrick followed heavily, SpongeBob shuffled closer and snuggled into his side. Mr Krabs and Squidward stood by awkwardly – unsure of what to do or how they could help.
"You wanna tell me what happened?" SpongeBob coaxed softly.
"…Bad dream." Patrick admitted after a moment of deep breathing, "Really bad dream…"
"Ok… what happened in the dream?" SpongeBob looked up at his friend's pale face.
"I didn't make it in time." Patrick whimpered as his tears began to fall again, he took a shuddering breath. "I was too late."
SpongeBob sighed sadly, understanding now what his friend was upset over. He leaned on him again as he thought about what to say.
"What is he talking about?" Squidward asked quietly, "What was he too late for?"
The freckled boy took a deep breath before explaining.
"When Sandy and I climbed Mount Humongous there was an avalanche… I fell…" He bowed his head slightly. "Patrick saved me when he flew in with Sandy's jetpack… he got there just in time…"
Mr Krabs and Squidward stared at him in shock, they didn't realise how close they had been to never seeing the boy again.
"I told you it was dangerous!" Squidward scolded, hiding his fear with anger.
SpongeBob rolled his eyes.
"Not the time!" He hushed his tall friend.
"You made it in time, you saved my life!" SpongeBob stressed as he looked up at his distressed friend once again, "I'm still here!"
"Yeah! Yer holdin' him lad. Ye brought our boy home." Mr Krabs suddenly piped up, sounding grateful at this new information.
"But it's my fault!" Patrick continued to cry, "If I hadn't been so dumb and stubborn, I would've been there next to you! I wouldn't have let you fall!"
SpongeBob frowned.
"It's not your fault! I understand why you left, I didn't listen to you and that was wrong of me!" SpongeBob shifted in place, "Everything's ok now! You don't know what would've happened if you were there, maybe you would've fallen instead and nobody would be there to save you!"
"I guess… Still, I shouldn't have abandoned you." Patrick sniffed, he reached over and grabbed SpongeBob's hand. "I promise I'll never leave you again."
"I'll never leave you either." SpongeBob nodded reassuringly, "I'll be right here by your side!"
Patrick chuckled wetly.
Mr Krabs and Squidward helped the two up and continued their walk home in comfortable silence. The two best friends wished them goodnight before turning to look up at the Pineapple.
"Hey, uh…" Patrick shuffled awkwardly, "Can I… Maybe stay here tonight?"
"Of course!" SpongeBob smiled fondly, "We can have a sleepover! We'll watch a movie, eat popcorn and fall asleep together on the couch! How does that sound buddy?"
"Sounds like the best night ever." Patrick smiled gratefully.
And the two did exactly that. SpongeBob was the first to fall asleep, using his best friend as a pillow.
"Thanks buddy, you're the best." Patrick mumbled sleepily,
"You're welcome…" SpongeBob slurred as he fell asleep, Patrick chuckled fondly.
He too drifted off to sleep, feeling cozy with his friend's weight against him and his breath on his ear. He slept better that night than he had since the incident.
