Trish gradually pushed down on her break to stop at the sign in front of the high school. The parking lot was pretty much empty, and the only reasons why she stayed after school so late on a Friday were for her best friend's meeting and her boyfriend's popularity. Ally hated driving so Trish drove her everywhere. And Trish knew that whenever she took pictures with Trent those were the ones that got the most likes. It was her favorite thing about him.
"Is that Dez?" Ally murmured as she peered out the windshield.
Trish bit the inside of her cheek. There had been one more reason that Trish decided to stay after school today. She had overheard during lunch that Dez was staying late to work on his filming project. So instead of taking enough pictures with Trent in the courtyard at lunch and instead of asking Austin to pick up Ally after he got home from his fancy private school, Trish made plans to stay. And during the hour and a half that she had remained after the bell, she made sure to drop by the videography classroom and annoy Dez Wade.
"Who?" Trish said in a bored tone as she sped up her windshield wipers.
Ally gave Trish a knowing look and then refocused her attention on the guy struggling with his bike in the rain. Her voice was full of concern as she said, "Look at him, Trish. It's raining so hard outside."
Trish glanced at him. "Yeah. He looks like a drenched doof. So what?" She held up her hand and spread her fingers over the steering wheel. "Do you think I should get my nails done tomorrow after my haircut?"
Ally frowned at her best friend. She crossed her arms and settled back into her seat. "Just because you think Dez is cute, doesn't mean you have to be mean to him, Trish."
Trish felt blood rush to her cheeks and her eyes widened in defense. "Have you lost your mind, Ally! No! Not even if everyone died and he was the last lanky dork on Earth!"
Ally raised an eyebrow. "Weren't you supposed to get that haircut after school...today? And yet, here you are. When I told you that Austin could pick me up." She made a point of looking out the window at Dez, who was huddled under a tree. "Where exactly were you during my meeting?"
Trish glared at Ally. "I was waiting for you. And because I'm a good friend, I changed my hair appointment. So, Rude, a thank you would be nice."
Ally loosened her crossed arms and smirked. "I walked by the videography classroom."
Trish turned away from Ally's accusing look. She gripped the steering wheel as her car remained idling in the rainy parking lot. "I have a boyfriend, Ally."
"I know," Ally said gently. "But as your best friend, I think you deserve someone better than Trent. Sure, he is good looking and cool, but there's no… spark between you two."
"Ugh." Trish rolled her eyes. "Not every relationship has to be like yours with Austin. I don't need a spark. Most people don't have a spark."
Ally shrugged good-naturedly. "I think you have one with Dez."
Trish looked at Ally as if her best friend had sprouted another head. "You must be huffing those pickle jars because there's no way that I could ever have a 'spark' with Dez Wade. He's annoying. And he dresses like a clown! And don't get me started on those stupid blue eyes!"
Ally raised both eyebrows and a smile formed in the corner of her lips. "Blue eyes, huh?"
"I mean, I guess they're probably blue. I don't know," Trish grumbled as she fidgeted with the fuzzy pink steering wheel cover.
"Uh huh," Ally said as she rolled down her window slightly.
"What are you doing?" Trish demanded, hating the panic in her voice.
"Excuse me! Dez! Over here! Do you need a ride?" Ally called out as she stuck her hand out and waved it in the rain.
Trish watched as Dez abandoned his bike and jogged over to her car. She quickly put her car in park and then messed with her hair in the rearview mirror. She bit her lip and wished she had gotten her haircut last weekend so it was more manageable.
"I don't love you anymore," Trish said under breath to Ally.
"Sure, you do. But maybe not as much," Ally whispered between giggles.
Dez slid into the back of the car, tossing his backpack to the side and shaking his hair like a dog would when wet. "Woo!" he said loudly as he clicked on his seatbelt. "I should've known it would rain. My knees always ache when it rains."
Trish looked over her shoulder and narrowed her eyes at him, "What? Are you my abuela or something? And don't get your gross Dez germs all over my backseat."
"Hi, Dez," Ally said cheerfully from the passenger seat. "Is your bike going to be okay?"
Dez waved his hand and nodded. "Oh, yeah. I'll walk back tomorrow and get it." He grabbed his backpack and unzipped it to reveal a bag of colorful jelly beans. "So, ladies, who wants a jelly bean sandwich?" He leaned forward so that his chin rested on Trish's shoulder. "You wouldn't happen to have any wheat bread, would ya?"
Trish felt a knot in her stomach from his closeness. Rain dripped from his hair onto her bare shoulder because she was wearing a sleeveless dress and had taken off her sweater earlier. She said through her teeth, "Get away from me."
Dez shrugged and settled back into the backseat. He grabbed a handful of jelly beans. "I'm so glad you guys stayed after! My phone's dead so I couldn't call my mom. I saw Trent and asked him for a lift, but he said no."
"Really?" Trish asked, slightly surprised. She knew Trent thought Dez was annoying, but they lived right beside each other. "He was going home. He could've given you a ride."
She ignored the fact that she also wouldn't have given Dez a ride home if Ally hadn't forced her to do so. But that was different. Her boyfriend wasn't the one with a secret crush. Trent was so full of himself, that he never did anything in secret.
"Eh, I don't think he likes me," Dez replied casually. He munched on his jelly beans and offered a handful to Ally.
Ally scrunched her nose at the jelly beans. "No thanks," she said politely as she gently pushed his hand away. "Why wouldn't Trent like you?"
Dez swallowed his candy and smacked his lips. He shifted his gaze to the back of Trish's head, but she was too busy taking the car out of park and driving forward. He said softly, "He thinks I want something he has."
Trish turned the wheel to drive down the road. She snorted and glanced at Dez in the rearview mirror. "What? A brain," she teased.
Ally smiled to herself. Her shoulder had been turned slightly so she could see Dez, which meant she saw the lovelorn look he was giving her best friend. She shifted in her seat and focused on the rain outside.
"Hey, Dez. If you don't have any plans tomorrow, Trish could use some company during her haircut. I had promised to go, but I just remembered that my dad needs my help," Ally said, not brave enough to look over at Trish.
"I didn't realize I needed company," Trish hissed below a whisper.
"Oh! I would love to go, Trish! I go with my mom and sister all the time," Dez said brightly. He wrapped up the rest of his jelly beans. "I'll save these for tomorrow then."
"Great," Trish muttered, sending a glare in Ally's direction.
Ally shrugged and mouthed, "You're welcome."
For the rest of the car ride, Trish ignored the excitement in her gut and resisted the urge to plan out her outfit for her haircut tomorrow with Dez.
