One Giant Leap for Pina
Pina hung her head low as she and Bozes had ultimately failed to steal a "gun" from Japan, defeated that she couldn't bring it back to have it reverse-engineered for the Empire. She looked out into the crowds of people that had been waving goodbye to them, or rather, their companions as they made their way through the Gate. She watched as the shining sun and structures of steel and glass disappear behind her, the darkness of the Gate consuming them as the headlights were turned on to light the road ahead. The redhead had to admit that Japan was quite an interesting place with such a variety of buildings, food, and even amazing literature she didn't know existed. It was all so fascinating and her curiosity extended outward to the world the JSDF called home, shocked to know that Japan had other nations that were considered the superpowers of the world.
What intrigued her more was the fact that the top three powers were so vast that their own controlled land could fit the entirety of Japan within it. She truly wondered what those lands were like, what political leanings they had, or if they had their own monarchs who were curious about the going-on's with Japan's Gate. Sadly, she and Bozes were only told the bare minimum when they asked about them and Itami's squad gave them a brief explanation with nothing noteworthy. Pina hoped that if she had to ever return to Japan that they would allow her to learn more about Earth as its whole.
"That was quite the experience, wouldn't you agree?" Tuka asked to no one in particular as she snuggled a bit more in her coat, amazed with how soft and warm it was.
"Truly eventful to say the very least, though the interruptions weren't warranted," Rory said as her attempts at seducing Itami all failed, either by those within the group or outside forces. "I mean really, who in their right mind tries to steal a weapon that is far too heavy for a normal person to carry?"
"Well, crime is still a thing no matter where you go, I'm just glad that nothing too serious happened while we were home," Itami said and Pina understood what he meant as he confided to her that he worried about everyone's safety.
There was an apparent extremist group of nationalists that weren't too keen on having those across the Gate visit their homeland, their activities gaining the attention of the Japanese government when messages were intercepted. Itami never really said what those messages contained, but all Pina knew was that they worried the soldier enough to remain on guard during their visit. The princess was honestly amazed at the response time that the soldiers guarding the Gate had when they tackled an individual, holding an unknown substance, that ran at the group when they went to pay their respects to the fallen. Itami was more than angered at the actions of his fellow countrymen, calling them "domestic terrorists" that were endangering their own country with their actions. Pina called those types of people insurgents and they were usually hanged for their actions, but Japan would find a humane way of dealing with them.
"I am fascinated by the things that I've come to learn in Japan, they'll help increase the power of my magic with these new formulas," Lelei said as she played with the closed device the Japanese gifted her.
"Making strides with your magic at such a young age, you are shaping to become a very powerful mage Lelei," Rory said as she gave an approving smile towards the blue-haired girl and Pina was just as impressed with the young teen.
"Correction, a powerful mage within our homeland. I do believe that the mages of the FEF have yet to truly show anyone what they're capable of." Lelei said and the princess had to agree with the young mage since none of the magic wielders looked to be truly going all out in battle.
That reminded Pina about the mission she had set Hamilton and Panache to accomplish, hoping that her trusted friend managed to succeed. Things went as smoothly as they could with the Japanese, so the worry about failing with them has subsided although the redhead would prefer to have a backup in case anything were to happen. A brief memory of her elder brother's brash attitude popping to the forefront of her mind and she could feel a pit in her stomach of how much things could fall apart because of him.
"My, you're right Lelei, even during the Flame Dragon attack neither Gray, Natsu, or their allies truly went all out," Rory said after she had given some thought to the young mage's words as the group was there to witness all of it, save for Pina and Bozes.
"Not to mention that the Diet wanted to speak with Gray and Wendy as well since they were the first representatives from the FEF we met. They really wanted to know what their people wanted out of allying themselves with us." Itami said as a few questions began springing up about the young man on a motorcycle that came to their aid.
That was a question that Pina recalled hearing when she was watching the conference take place on the rectangle the Japanese called a television. Many a spokesperson wondered about the report of a young man and teenage girl who were just as out of place in their world as the JSDF. Pina heard the other girls defend Itami and his people from accusations of failing to try and save more people and included the fact that Gray and Wendy had helped lessen the number of deaths even more with their actions. They were all heroes in Pina's opinion and she wondered why they were being ridiculed as cowards and failing at their duty to protect their charges, it was a Flame Dragon and those who survived are lucky to be alive.
"In any event, I'm just hoping that they won't be asking to meet anyone of the FEF just yet. It's one thing to have you guys visit, it's another to have magic powerhouses in the city." Itami joked as they continued to drive forward through the darkness.
"Itami, if I may, do you think it would be troublesome to ask for your help in contacting Sir Gray?" Pina needed to get into contact with the young man soon as she's been gone for two days and she couldn't contain her worry for her two knights.
"Well, I don't think it will be difficult to send word back to his base, but it will take time and the team will need to be debriefed of anything that has happened since we left..." Itami began before his radio device went off, calling out a name before the Japanese man picked it up and responded.
Pina watched him listen to what she assumed was his superiors for a time before he would reply accordingly, of course, it was all in Japanese so she was unsure of what they were communicating to one another. A part of her was willing to ask Lelei to translate for her, but she was sitting at the end of the vehicle and seemed to be engrossed with her new device more than anything. The princess turned back to see Itami's face light up in surprise before settling down and with a few final words, he put the radio back into its previous position.
"Well Pina, it's your lucky day. Headquarters just radioed that representatives from the FEF have arrived earlier today and amongst them is Gray and his group." Itami said and Pina felt the budding sense of elation deep within her now that the pieces were finally starting to come together.
The group continued to ride through the Gate, idle chatter taking up the majority of their time, and sometimes Pina would join when it moved to the topics she had the most interest in. The conversations went on for a few minutes before the shining rays of daylight began to peer through and the exit was fast approaching. Pina heard a solemn sigh escape Itami's mouth and she could understand that he wasn't willing to return, but the feeling couldn't be shared since she had a mission to accomplish. Once they were clear of the Gate and their vehicle had been inspected for any foreign substances, as was standard procedure from what Pina had learned, they had been instructed to a designated staging area to park.
Pina recognized the FEF's Pegasus once she got off the iron carriage and was surprised by the number of them compared to the first time she had seen them. As the rest of the group made their way off the vehicle, a soldier with glasses came to welcome Itami and instructed the group to follow him towards the refugee area. The princess listened to his explanation that the area around the base was transforming into a bustling trade hub, with some of the refugees either starting work as traders for the JSDF or building homes in the area. It was quite surprising to hear as Alnus had been regarded as a holy site for years and now Pina could see the early signs of a new town being built in the vicinity.
As they followed behind the group, Pina had caught sight of a familiar head of hair and armor across the way, politely excusing herself as she and Bozes made their way over to him. The dark-haired young man was in a conversation with another individual with white hair who seemed laid back as they spoke and apparently decided to leave when he had caught sight of Pina making her way to them.
"It good to see you again, Sir Gray," Pina said as Gray turned to face her, a calm smile on his face as he regarded the two.
"Likewise, Princess Pina and you too, Bozes." The mage responded as Pina could see her blonde companion bow in turn. "So how as the trip to Japan, any fun escapades?"
"Given to the current situation of my Empire, I'm afraid that it was all business for myself," Pina said as Gray nodded in understanding, turning his head to keep an eye on a set of double doors.
"I do hope you aren't too tired to conduct some more as there are a few people that would like to speak to you," Gray said as he let out a tired sigh once a barely dressed woman had emerged from the doors he kept his eye on. "If you would follow me, please."
Pina had a variety of questions with some involving the immodestly dressed woman that seemed expectant of Gray's arrival. Nevertheless, she and Bozes followed after the former royal and made themselves presentable in front of this woman. Before any introductions could be made, another group of people emerged and this time it was a large, towering bald man that made a great appearance with his long beard and flowing coat. On top of that, the soldiers belonging to the FEF stood straighter and got in designated positions once they caught sight of said man.
"Princess Pina Co Lada, these are the representatives of the Fiorean Expeditionary Forces; Supreme Commander Jura Neekis, Clara Greybourne, and Daronbolt Gryder." Gray introduced as they each bowed their heads in respective order of introduction. "And this is Ambassador Brandish Myu, she is the representative of Fiore's ally the Alvarez Empire."
Pina was not prepared for this.
These people were the ones in complete control of all the military forces within her homeland and were the ones who would make the decisions of how her Empire would be treated. She needed more time to center herself and make herself the diplomat she trained to become for years because of her upbringing. Of the group, the scantily clad woman wasn't close to what a representative should dress as, and yet it was quite obvious that she commanded respect. Pina quickly took a moment to center herself and bowed in respect to them, Bozes following suit.
"Princess Pina, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. Commander Scarlet and her team have expressed the eagerness you show to find a peaceful solution to this conflict." The large man began as FEF soldiers began to encircle the group to a point that Pina was starting to feel uncomfortable with. "We are very appreciative of your willingness to help."
"My Empire is my livelihood, so I must do what is best for those living in it," Pina replied smoothly as the Supreme Commander nodded his head to her words. "If I may ask, what brings you to Alnus?"
"Since peace talks are underway between your people and us, we've decided to extend the non-aggression pact with Japan for the foreseeable future." Ambassador Myu spoke up as the group began to move towards the Lieutenant General's office, with their escort in tow. "We've received word from the Queen that she'd like to discuss further cooperation personally with a representative of Japan, a gesture that would ease the concerns of her Senate."
"I see, I can assume that the talks with Hamilton went smoothly?" Pina asked and hoped against all odds that her petite friend didn't give them too much trouble.
"We laid out the necessary guidelines for peace and she understood the position needed to accomplish said goal. She may think that it didn't go well on her end, but I think it went fine." The Ambassador replied and Pina wasn't so sure if what she said should make her feel better since the woman felt just as dangerous as Natsu does.
"Have they come alongside you for this endeavor?" The redhead asked as she fell in step with the group, trying her best to stick close to Gray but inadvertently having to be nearby Ambassador Myu.
"I'm afraid this business primarily concerned the Queen's chosen representatives so the two knights you sent our way remain back at our base. No need to worry for them, they are being well taken care of." Daronbolt replied from behind the group, Pina noticing that he was keeping his distance from the Ambassador.
"Thank you for the hospitality on their behalf, I've been meaning to discuss this in person and the choice to come alongside the JSDF was a spur of the moment thing," Pina admitted although she had a distinct feeling they were more than aware of the reason why her trip occurred in the first place.
"It's quite alright, the Queen herself would've liked to speak to you in person as well if the Senate didn't require most of her attention. Fortunately, she sent us her most trusted aid in her stead in the form of Clara Greybourne." The Supreme Commander said as the named woman gave a short bow to Pina, surprised that the most trusted aid looked no older than Gray.
"My Queen is a very... proactive individual and she wished to ensure that Fiore was serious in the prospect of peace. Her care for her people takes precedence over the need to prolong a meaningless fight." Clara said as she adjusted her glasses, her demeanor very reminiscent of a seasoned diplomat in Pina's eyes.
"I hope to ease your worries when I say that I'll do my best to shift the Empire into friendly terms with the two nations we wrongfully attacked." Pina was still nervous with the present group and knew that it was in her best interest to admit the Empire was at fault over claiming deniability of their actions.
"For your sake princess, I hope so." Ambassador Myu cryptically said and the redhead couldn't even begin to fathom what Hamilton and Panache had to get through when being in a room with that woman.
"The Ambassador means well, Princess Pina, but perhaps you should join us in this meeting," Jura said as he guided the group along. "This may be between our two forces but with your agreed involvement, you should be privy to some future endeavors."
As the group of representatives entered the office building for the military operations of the JSDF, instead of being taken to the Lieutenant General's office, they were led to a meeting room. It was quite spacious and had available seating for everyone present, the FEF escort having been left behind at the entrance of the building. Inside the meeting room, Lieutenant General Hazama was already awaiting their return with a compliment of high officers, and also standing within the room was the man that had greeted them when they parked. Pina was planning to take a seat next to Gray but found him standing behind the Ambassador and quickly decided to take the available seat next to the Supreme Commander. Returning pleasantries were exchanged and Lieutenant General questioned if they had enough time to deliberate, which meant that these talks had been happening well before Pina arrived back to Alnus.
"I would like to assume that our current positions wouldn't clash with any reservations you have about the Special Region, but I can tell that isn't the case." Hazama began and Pina quickly deduced that the two factions weren't agreeing on terms about her homeland.
"You see, Lieutenant General, we've arranged a basic understanding between our factions earlier on and had explained that any matters dealing in the Special Region were time-sensitive," The Supreme Commander began as he presented a parchment on the table before him. "I came in person to encourage the idea of concluding your dealings here as quickly as you can and begin preparations to pull out of the Special Region."
The older Japanese man took the time to look over the parchment, discussing it with the other officers beside him and Pina took this time to truly analyze the current situation. It would seem that the FEF has come to propose to the JSDF the idea of leaving her homeland promptly, but there was more to it than that. The Supreme Commander must have set an outline of the course of actions needed for the JSDF to properly leave and the Lieutenant General has yet to budge at the idea. It was good news in Pina's ears if the FEF was purposely trying to get rid of the JSDF, but she was rather worried about what it would mean if the FEF became the only power that could still oppose the Empire. Peace negotiations aside, the FEF still had the strength to topple the Empire a dozen times over, and although she didn't think it possible, she couldn't shake the idea of Sir Gray taking a chance of ruling the Empire.
"I understand your concern, Supreme Commander, but the Japanese government hasn't the notion to pull out of the Special Region. We haven't really done a complete survey of the entire region and we are being pushed to continue operations here." Hazama seemed steadfast with the orders he was given, like any good soldier, but Pina could tell that those of the FEF didn't seem keen on his immovable stone attitude.
"Underlying order aside for being in the area, you've got to see that we are both on a precarious timeline. We've calculated the time remaining and we've decided to begin mobilization of key goals." Ambassador Myu said in a bored tone before shifting her gaze towards Pina. "The princess wants peace and we've agreed to help her reconstruct the Empire into a more unifying center for all living beings."
That was new. Pina wasn't aware of the fact that she wanted to accomplish something like that and she sent a confused look towards Gray. The armored man simply giving her a slow nod in the direction of the Ambassador and she had to trust his judgment in letting her carry the conversation.
"The first objective is to win favor within the political structure of the Empire and from there, simply play our cards right." She continued before reclining in her seat, the Japanese officers contemplating her words before going into a quiet discussion amongst themselves.
"By pulling in these political figures, do you hope to destabilize power to the Emperor and secure your sense of peace?" Hazama asked as the other officers continued to discuss amongst themselves.
"Although that would topple the crown, it wouldn't do any good to completely remove the royal family from their position of power," The Ambassador said as she pointed a finger towards Pina. "It'd be in their best interest to hand power off to a more feasible ruler who'll actually think about the empire's dire situation and bring back normalcy."
"Am I to believe that you plan on getting the senators to commit regicide and place the princess on the throne?" It was much more of a shock to Pina on hearing the FEF dethrone her father than it was to the JSDF command.
"To his person, no, but to his political stranglehold on his "Senate", then yes." The Ambassador replied simply and the redhead couldn't believe that everyone was on board with it.
"I understand that my father has made terrible mistakes with both of your worlds, but I'm positive that if you convince key members of the Senate, then even his mind would be changed." Pina offered as she couldn't bring herself to betray her father in such a way, especially by doing so with the help of their enemy.
"The princess is still the daughter of the Emperor and would have her reservations about the idea, but it could work in our favor to impress those senators with the resources at our disposal," Hazama said as this plan would have already been in motion given that there was one individual in the room who'd take up the task.
"Which is why these things must be done as soon as they can, time is not on our side." The Supreme Commander said and Hazama stiffened once again, his own way of a physical disagreement.
"I'm rather curious, you've mentioned that time is not an ally, why?" Pina's heard them refer to it and it seems that the JSDF's belief in their discoveries outweighs that of the FEF's knowledge about the Gate.
"The Gate is a magical construct that opens to two separate realities, which is no doubt requiring mass amounts of magical power to maintain. The Gate at the Artisian Valley is connected to another world with an abundance of magic, whereas the one here at Alnus Hill is connected to a world devoid of magic." The Ambassador answered as she eyed all the Japanese officers, many of which grew somewhat concerned about being reminded of the potential threat the Gate itself poses.
"Essentially, the one connecting our world is easier to maintain for a period of time; however, the Gate connecting to Japan is much harder and would cause strain over a prolonged amount of time." The Supreme Commander finished as Pina came to realize that the Gate's themselves will close at some point.
"And though I understand the concern, our research has compiled the data and the structural integrity of our Gate is still holding strong. We've prepared the necessary drills if we discover any changes to the Gate if what you theorize comes to pass." Hazama interjected and Pina was surprised that the Ambassador outwardly groaned into her seat after hearing him.
"Science is all well and good, but the very principles of magic defy it at every turn," The scantily clad woman said, causing the Japanese officers to eye each other in mild concern. "I'm curious to what your understanding of matter is."
"To put it simply; no matter the state of an object over time, its matter stays constant." One officer said and the Ambassador nodded her head, snapping her finger to call over a golden-haired woman.
"Gray, grab the hem of Dimaria's neckline and hold tight. Dimaria, let it happen or else." She commanded as the golden-haired woman sighed and Pina could almost hear her growl she let out at Gray when he stood behind her.
Though that was something else entirely as well since Pina never expected Gray to be commanded in such by someone else in such a fashion. That is until she remembered that Gray was no longer of royalty and decided to live a life of the commoner, so it must not have seemed odd to anyone else besides her. As Pina mused to herself, she made sure to pay attention to what the Ambassador planned to do with Dimaria.
"I want you to understand that we know what we're talking about when it concerns magic." The Ambassador said as she snapped her finger and in an instant, Dimaria vanished into thin air.
Everyone, aside from the FEF members, was shocked to see her completely dematerialize her own ally. Pina was the most blown away as she had never seen a mage capable of doing that with the snap of her finger, now extremely worried about what the high command of the FEF was truly capable of. Everyone gave worried glances to one another before they heard Gray click his tongue in annoyance and watched as he struggled with his hand.
"Relax, would you!? Keep stabbing my fingers and I'll drop you!" Gray complained as everyone tried to focus in on the armored young man's hand to see a miniature Dimaria struggling in his grasp.
"You see, I can bend the rules of matter to my will. I can throw a pebble and my target will have to deal with a two-ton boulder if I so choose," The Ambassador said and Pina knew she wasn't the only one to reel back in surprise at the fact that she could even do such a thing. "And I'm not limited to just simple objects, but even living beings as well."
"Wouldn't it be affected with the increased weight?" A different officer asked since even to Pina's understanding, the weight of the object would slow it down but it would still be dangerous if she were to throw it in an arc.
"It would if I made it, but I wouldn't. I can make Gray as massive as a Giant and he'd still be as fast as he currently is," She continued as she signaled the aforementioned young man to put down Dimaria, snapping her fingers again and reverting her into her normal height. "I've mastered this magic and my control is absolute."
"And Randi still likes to hold the moniker of "Country Destroyer" after all this time," Dimaria muttered to herself and the redhead couldn't fathom how easily the green-haired woman would be able to accomplish such a feat.
"This was merely a demonstration of the knowledge we possess of the various magics of our world, we're far from making threats if you had concerns. We simply implore you to truly consider the fact that the Gate plays by rules you don't understand and we have your best interest at hand." The Clara woman spoke up towards Hazama and for the first time, the older Japanese man seemed conflicted after witnessing the Ambassador's might.
"In light of all this, we'll take it into consideration and will bring this to our superiors." The Lieutenant-General replied and even though Pina could see the minor signs of defeat in his posture, she couldn't blame him since magic is a form that follows rules set beyond the understanding of regular people.
"That is all we ask for and as far as the second request we had for you?" The Supreme Commander asked and Hazama nodded his head as he sent out an officer.
"A new official for foreign affairs for the current situation has been assigned and has arrived alongside our guests," The Lieutenant General said as he pointed towards the door and Pina had recognized the faces that had entered the room. "I'd like for you to meet Koji Sugawara and Reiko Shirayuri, our new liaisons with the Special Region and now extended to the FEF."
"A pleasure to meet you both," The Supreme Commander said before he put two fingers to his temple and seemed to be deep in thought. "I'd like to ask if there are any preparations either of you needs to make."
Pina watched as they both looked at each other curiously and shook their heads, the princess understanding that they weren't expecting the question as a smile crossed the bald man's face.
"Good, because I've just received word that her majesty, Queen Hisui, has asked for an audience with the JSDF." A moment of silence befell the room at the Supreme Commander's words, both Japanese diplomats trying their best to keep steady from Pina's perspective.
"Th-That's such short notice Supreme Commander, we've just arrived and had hoped to establish the necessary items for an event with senators Princess Pina had mentioned to us in Japan," Sugawara said as Pina knew he wasn't prepared to meet a queen when he just met a princess not so long ago.
"I understand as I wasn't aware of this request until just now, but such a thing had to have been expected after already spending this amount of time without meeting one another in person," Jura said and Pina could relate to being unprepared but it had just occurred to her that this was her chance to even speak with the monarchy on the side of the FEF.
"If it is alright, and even though I have just returned from Japan, I would like to request joining in meeting the Queen of Fiore as well," Pina asked the Supreme Commander and was met with surprised faces all around, except for the Ambassador who raised an interested brow.
"Interesting, I would've thought that you had matters to attend to in regards of finding those who would be willing to talk peace in that senate of yours." The Ambassador said and although she was right, this was important as well and she couldn't risk missing such an opportunity of traveling alongside other strangers to their world.
"Yes, that is my responsibility but so is presenting myself to those who lead the countries I am establishing peace with." Pina had gone through one Gate and saw Japan, so she was prepared to see anything that came her way in Fiore, and standing on her own two feet as the Third Princess to the Saderan Empire will prove her commitment to her ideals.
"If this is your desire, then I'll clear you for passage with only a handful of retainers to be at your side. This extends to you as well Mr. Sugawara and Ms. Shirayuri." The Supreme Commander said and Pina was relieved to be able to bring along a few more companions for the trip, which only consisted of her more immediately available knights.
"If that is the case, may I suggest the squad that had returned to Japan alongside the princess for the Diet?" The glasses-wearing man suggested and the idea was debated amongst the officers before Hazama was looked towards for the final call.
"A limited number of retainers are allowed to go, so I will allow Yanagida's suggestion of using Lieutenant Itami's squad to guard our foreign affairs liaisons," Hazama ordered as the redhead watched Yanagida jot down Itami's new orders, Pina feeling relieved about having the Japanese man at her side on this journey. "He does have the most experience alongside the FEF both on and off the battlefield, making him a perfect candidate."
"Very well, we'll be departing within the hour so please take the time you need to gather yourselves and we'll make our way back to base and then to Fiore." The Supreme Commander said as everyone in the room stood up and bowed their heads in farewell, shaking a few hands here and there before the FEF filtered out the room.
Pina followed alongside them, hoping for a chance to speak with Gray, but he was still standing alongside the Ambassador who Pina herself wouldn't want to deal with. She was reluctant to not get the chance to speak but accepted the outcome as he walked her towards one of their own iron Pegasus and believed that he'd leave with her. She turned away since he would be leaving and decided that she and Bozes should stay close by the group that they traveled alongside with.
"Your Highness, do you think it's wise to leave for another excursion across another Gate?" Bozes asked as even Pina thought it wouldn't do good to have Zorzal be the only one out and about within the Empire.
"I have my fears of the damage that could be done in my absence, but where would it leave us if I didn't show myself to those in charge of Fiore, while I readily did so for those in Japan?" She wanted peace on all fronts and Pina couldn't risk showing any signs of favoritism for either faction.
"I understand your Highness, as for the retainers that will be at your side?" Pina was wary of that since most of her knights were either back at the Capital or stationed at Italica, which left her with the obvious options.
"You will stay by my side, obviously, but the others such as Beefeater wouldn't make it in time to arrive. In their place, we'll need to take Hamilton and Panache since they're the only ones readily available." Pina replied and as much as she trusts both of her knights, she had hoped to bring others to give those two a bit of reprieve after staying with the FEF.
"Understood" Bozes simply replied as they had rejoined with Rory and the others, Lelei fast at work with her new device as her master looked on wonder.
"It would seem that Lelei was far too eager than I had anticipated about going back into her research." Rory outwardly mused as Tuka was completely lost with all the images the blue-haired teen kept popping up and various formulas zooming past.
"With this device, you'll become a master in no time, my young student!" Master Cato said as Pina couldn't doubt that with the help of Japan's technology, mages would make far greater discoveries.
"Correction, the time for my exam is fast approaching, and this device, called a "laptop", has accelerated my thesis to near completion," Lelei said as she hit a few more buttons in rapid succession with another round of formulas expanding on the screen.
"I'm very proud of you my student, but you'll have to excuse me for now. Anti-intellectuals who do not appreciate nor respect the craft have arrived." Master Cato said as he had taken notice of herself and Bozes approaching, leaving in a huff back to the refugee camp.
"What seems to be the matter with Master Cato?" Pina asked as she only ever had the utmost respect towards the Elder mages of the Empire, so it was curious for her to see him so disappointed with them.
"I guess you haven't heard yet, but it seems like a band of Imperials tried to kidnap and forcefully conscript young mages into their military on the outskirts of Rondel," Rory answered and a panicked fear shot up Pina's spine at the implication that either her father or fool headed brother would dare to attack the mages.
"The actions of the Empire have disgusted many masters when they discovered that their students had been taken forcefully, I share their sentiment," Lelei said as she closed her laptop and sent a glare towards Pina and Bozes, much to their visible surprise.
"You are a subject of the Empire; how dare you disrespect your homeland in such a way!?" Bozes questioned harshly and Pina understood that it was her duty to defend their honor, but the redhead could only feel shame under the teenager's gaze.
"I am no Imperial, my people belonged to the Rurudo tribe. We are nomads with no affiliation to the Empire." Lelei replied before she collected her things and she too left the group, although with a more subdued annoyance than that of Master Cato.
"She has every right to be angry with you, your forces even tried to take her older sister from what the message Cato received told him" Rory added as she sat down at the table where Lelei previously was. "Mimoza explained what had occurred and you're lucky they weren't successful in the end or else you'd have to deal with an angry city of mages."
"Did they manage to escape capture?" Pina asked with a tad bit of hope in her tone as they couldn't keep making enemies of the wrong people.
"They did, but not of their own accord. A group of mages that come from the same force as Gray came to their rescue, decimating those that resisted and took prisoner of those who surrendered to Rondel." Rory said with a devilish smile, the princess concluding that the demi-goddess was no doubt thinking of the carnage that followed that battle.
"Master Cato explained that the magic used wasn't like any that "Mimoza" had ever seen or felt, that the power behind their spells was something she could never imagine being in the hands of regular mages," Tuka said as she tried to recollect what the old man had told them while they were gone.
"Why must we be cursed..." Pina muttered to herself as she couldn't believe another defeat befell the Empire and at the hands of the FEF once again.
"First, I get new orders to move out again and now everyone seems so unhappy!" Came the complaint of Itami as he walked up to the girls, Tomita at his side with an understanding half-smile.
"Off to discover more about the lands here, Itami?" Rory asked in a creepily innocent way that Pina truly wondered what was going through the Reaper's mind as she looked at Itami.
"Better, I got guard duty for two liaisons making their way towards the FEF," Itami complained as he plopped himself onto an available seat at the table.
"I'm sure it'll be much easier this time around, Lieutenant." Tomita offered in reassurance, but Pina watched the commanding officer groan into the table further.
"Right, especially since I got to keep watch of Kuribayashi's attitude while we're there and Kurokawa will make sure I'm on my best behavior." Itami sarcastically remarked and Pina was curious why he was upset to have Kuribayashi around since she was an excellent woman in her opinion.
"Look on the bright side, you'll have Kurata and me as well," Tomita said and Itami mumbled his thanks for his words as he sat upright.
"At least you'll both share my pain," Itami grumbled one last time before settling himself with his new orders.
"If you're leaving to visit their base, then I'll tag along as well. I'm rather curious to see what kind of a society those people live in with such advancements in magic." Rory said with a mischievous giggle that gave Pina a worrisome feeling, which Itami both shared and outwardly expressed.
"Wherever Father goes, I will go too!" Tuka announced and though no one openly questioned it, everyone was very confused by her claim and Pina couldn't comprehend why she considered the Japanese man her father.
"Are we even cleared to bring them along?" Tomita asked and Pina believed that to be a good question since only the Japanese diplomats and herself were allowed.
"I'll just talk to Gray and see if they'd let them through. I'm sure he's got a soft spot for a fellow mage like Lelei to help us convince him." Itami replied as he looked around in search of the blue-haired teen. "Where is Lelei anyways?"
"She walked off in a huff, it would seem that the Empire has really ticked her off," Rory answered as she eyed Pina the whole time and the Princess wanted to shrink beneath her gaze.
"Maybe visiting a base full of mages will make her happy again." Itami mused as he got back up, putting on his cap, and stretched his arms out over his head. "Tomita, go retrieve the rest of the squad coming with us and resupply. I'll go find Gray or Erza and see if they'd let us bring the girls with us."
"Roger" Tomita replied as he walked off to accomplish his orders, Itami sighing to himself as he walked away in an assured direction.
Pina decided to walk after him with Bozes on her heels, hoping that the direction he was going in was where she could find the War Maiden at the very least. Itami had noticed her catching up to him, but paid little mind to the fact and simply kept his pace as he made for where all the FEF Pegasus were resting. She watched him wave to a couple of soldiers that he passed along the way until making it to the area guarding the flying contraptions before being stopped by FEF soldiers. Pina watched as he tried to explain his reasoning for coming up to their area, but it didn't seem to have any effect as the soldiers stood strong in guarding the area. That is until Gray had rounded one of the Pegasus and called them off to allow Itami, Bozes, and herself to enter the area.
"You do know that unless you're a pilot, engineer, or a member of the FEF that you're restricted from coming this close to the Pelicans, right?" Gray questioned as they drew closer, Itami scratching the back of his neck while offering half apologies to him.
"Sorry about that, but I need to ask for a favor." Itami began as Gray raised an eyebrow to him and looked expectantly towards herself and Bozes.
"What he has to ask is unrelated to us, I was actually wishing to speak with you about something else," Pina responded as the young man nodded to her before moving his gaze back to Itami.
"A favor, huh? That's a first," Gray said as FEF soldiers began to board some of the Pelicans when they were summoned, and called off preparation checks to one another. "I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask what it is."
"I got my orders to follow you guys and apparently, the girls want to come with," Itami said and before Gray could respond, the Japanese man clasped his hands together and bowed his head. "Please allow them to come with, for my sake at the very least!"
"Don't need to beg for it, give me a minute," Gray said as he pulled out a small crystal-like disk and watched him visibly transfer magic to the object. "Blue Leader calling for Supreme Commander Jura."
"I hear you Blue Leader, what do you have for me?" Came the voice of the Supreme Commander as a blue-hued visage of his person appeared from the disk, much to Pina's awe at seeing an image so clear from a device so small.
"I've got a request to allow passage for three more people for the next trip," Gray said as the image of the Supreme Commander stroked his impressive beard.
"These individuals, who are they, and who placed the request?" He asked and Pina for the first time noticed that Itami was visibly nervous at his question.
"They are an elf girl, the mage girl Lelei La Lalena and Rory Mercury." Gray gave a quick look towards Itami and subsequently rolled his eyes as the Japanese man shrugged his shoulders nervously. "It comes under my request."
"Interesting. You do realize, Blue Leader, that if I allow this request then you are responsible for those three, correct? This is a diplomatic mission, so I can't have my men be responsible for three individuals not originally cleared for passage. Am I understood?" Even if it was merely just an image of him, the Supreme Commander felt very imposing to Pina and had decided to revoke an aspect of the conversation she wanted to have with Gray after.
"Understood, Supreme Commander. I'll take full responsibility for them." Gray agreed with a tired sigh, though there was a satisfied chuckle from Itami.
"Very well, request accepted. I'll notify my associates about the extended personnel list once I arrive back at the base. Supreme Commander Jura, out." With that, the image faded away and Gray stored the disk back in a pouch he had on his person while he sent an annoyed glare towards the smiling Itami.
"Thanks, Gray, I don't think I'd be able to handle the intensity of your Supreme Commander." The lieutenant joked as the young man rolled his eyes again.
"Yeah, well now I've got to keep tabs on those three, or else I've got to deal with two different superiors and Erza. Just make sure you're ready in case I'm not around to look after them." Gray ordered as Itami merely nodded his head in agreement before waving goodbye to them, walking back to his allies from what Pina had to assume.
"Honestly, he reminds me so much of Natsu without also being the idiot that Charcoal Breath usually is," Gray muttered as now it was just them left nearby one of the Pelicans, the young man waiting patiently for her to say something.
"Things sure seem to be moving far faster than what I had anticipated, especially with how things were left with my impromptu journey to Japan," Pina said as she's had to make numerous strides after his debacle with Bozes.
"That's for certain, but like what was discussed in that meeting room; we're all running on a timetable," Gray said as he examined the base around them, seeming to be lost in thought, while it came as a comfort to the pair that he wasn't directly looking at them.
"Forgive my next words, but I'm rather grateful that there will come a point where both of your forces must retreat to your homeland," Bozes said and though Pina sent a shocked look her way for it, she was utterly confused when Gray gave a short laugh.
"You can't really mean that Bozes, I was just starting to enjoy getting to know you," Gray said with a playful smirk and Bozes rolled her eyes openly at him. "I could say the same about you Pina, you're rather brave for not only visiting Japan but forwardly asking the Supreme Commander permission to travel with us. Color me impressed."
"I thank you for the kind words, Sir Gray, but I am merely doing everything within my power to ensure that the people of the Empire have security," Pina replied as her face grew hot, the ever-changing shifts of her moods and his words causing it.
"Would you be willing to share some insight about the queen you serve?" Bozes asked and Pina was happy the ringlet blonde brought it up as she was still reeling from earlier.
"My specific group of friends tends to be rather informal with Queen Hisui, but I suggest behaving in a manner befitting that of meeting a monarch." Gray offered and the redhead should've known it was just standard mannerisms, though she was intrigued by the fact that Gray and his particular group could be so casual with the ruler of their nation.
"Then we shall present ourselves accordingly to Queen Hisui," Pina said with a forced smile as Gray gave her a light nod in understanding, but a brief flash of blue lit up his eye before disappearing.
"No need to be nervous, she's an understanding woman and would find it admirable of you to seek her out of your own volition," Gray said although Pina was still in hidden surprise at seeing that same spark light his eye as it had done before. "I think things will be alright, but you'll have to excuse me, I need to start making preparations for our departure. I suggest you do as well since we'll be leaving soon."
Gray gave the Imperials a short wave as he walked away towards a group of soldiers gathering materials in crates. Pina watched with that same forced smile, waiting for the moment that he'd be out of earshot before turning on her heel to glare at Bozes.
"What was that about, Bozes!? How are you two on such friendly terms after just one meeting?" Pina didn't understand how the ringlet blonde could speak and react to him as if they've known each other since childhood.
"I don't know what to say, Your Highness. The best I can describe it is that he reminds me a great deal of Luvan Co Bardo." Bozes replied and the redhead was really confused at the blonde's comparison of the two young men.
"In what way does he remotely compare to Luvan?"
"The night in which he stopped me from entering Itami's room, his mannerisms and attitude changed from this fierce warrior that I first met to someone akin to an elder sibling taunting me," Bozes explained and Pina could only conclude that she had to have been there to see the shift since she only knows Gray in the light of a seasoned warrior and composed individual.
"Such a radical shift in disposition seems worrying, especially for one as strong as him." Pina couldn't really think of the young man in such a way, but she did get a taste of it when Bozes made her remark.
"I understand what you mean, Your Highness, but it wasn't as radical as I made it out to be," Bozes explained, taking a moment to find the right words to further her point. "The change was gradual the more we spoke to one another and it felt very natural as if this was the person he truly was. Of course, like Luvan, his attitude annoys me to no end."
"Then perhaps he should meet Luvan," Pina said after hearing Bozes' clearer explanation, starting to understand the picture even if it still didn't match up in her head.
"Oh, I'm afraid that won't be possible, Your Highness," Bozes said with a down casted look, an all telling sign of bad news Pina hadn't been made aware of. "Logistic officers believe he was one of the many casualties that were lost during the attack on the Artisian Valley."
"A pity..." Pina remembered Luvan as a good man, he was in training to be a knight when they reached the age to do it themselves, acting as a pseudo mentor to many of them and like an older sibling to others. Bozes being one such person he looked after like a younger sister.
"This campaign is a costly one, My Princess, and that is why I wish to help settle it for good," Bozes said with a spark of determination on her face and Pina was rather glad to see a fire burn within her after so many setbacks and revelations that were beyond their scope.
Pina smiled at her as she began to make her way back to the main portion of the base, knowing that that determination within Bozes had also to do with Luvan. As much as the ringlet blonde had found him annoying, Pina knew that Bozes was grateful to have him in her life and was putting on a brave face to not worry her. But this was why Pina was pushing herself through boundaries she had never believed she'd cross, all for the sake of those she cared about and those she could save from ill fates.
Within an hour, the group of Special Region and Japanese guests had all gathered at the meeting point for the journey. Pina had been curious by the lack of ground vehicles present, as she had been led to believe that they'd travel by land towards the FEF base. Pina turned around when she heard something roar to life as one of the FEF's Pelicans flew over towards them, her surprise mimicked by everyone present when its doors slid open. the redhead watched as Gray stepped off the flying contraption and outstretched his hand for them to come inside, no one really wanting to take the first step until Rory decided to board. As the Apostle got on, the other girls followed after her and then the Japanese dignitaries although Itami and his group had decided to wait for Pina to board.
"Flying...Why do we have to go flying?" Pina heard Bozes mutter as she placed a shaky foot onto the craft, immediately taking a seat once inside.
The redhead shared her sentiment as she had never flown before, the idea of traversing the skies like a bird had never crossed her mind and here she was about to go on her first flight. As she took her seat alongside Bozes, she had taken notice that Itami seemed rather nervous as well since he began humming a tune to himself to keep distracted. With the last of the JSDF aboard, Gray called out to the forefront of the craft and received a simple reply before the craft shook slightly and began to rise. The doors that they had entered through didn't close behind Gray, so they were all privy to watch themselves rise from the ground and a trio of FEF soldiers went to work to set up a rather heavy-looking object at the furthest side of the door.
Pina nervously clutched Bozes' hand as they rose higher and the JSDF base grew smaller below them, a few more roars echoing around them as the other Pelicans joined them in the sky. Six smaller craft had also joined them and once they created a formation of the flying vehicles, did Pina feel the weight of the craft pull forward and shut her eyes in response to the sudden movement.
"Open your eyes, Pina, you don't want to miss your first flight, do you?" Gray asked her and she tentatively opened one eye as the young man stood before her, extending one hand to show her what he meant.
At first, she was amazed that he could stand there so easily without fear of falling off the Pelican, but it transformed into wonderment as she took a good look outside. Pina watched as they flew over treetops, the ground below so far away, and yet they were blowing past all of it at a speed she couldn't have even begun to imagine. Off in the distance, she could see horses racing across a field before they flew well past their speed and couldn't believe how comfortable one soldier was with letting his legs dangle off the side. Pina was truly blown away with flying and tried her best to get Bozes to open her eyes so she wasn't the only one to have this experience no one else in the Empire would have the opportunity to have.
She watched as the ringlet blonde give a quick peek and clutched her arm tighter at the height they were flying at, the redhead trying to calm her down and have her enjoy the ride. Many of the others didn't seem as impressed with the flight, save for Tuka who seemed to share a similar feeling like her. She truly enjoyed the flight, but the familiar grasslands and mountains came into view and she knew that they were nearing the Artisian Valley. Their base was a tad larger than that of the JSDF, but what stood out the most was the towering beings guarding key entrances!
"Bozes look, Giants!" Pina couldn't believe her eyes at the hulking creatures that stood guard of the gates leading into the base, the very walls of the base reaching only their chests.
"By the Gods! I never thought I'd actually see one!" Bozes said as she finally opened her eyes, the sight being a good enough distraction from their flight.
"I got to admit Pina, dragon riders are one thing, but they got freaking Giant sentries!" Itami may have been nervous earlier, but Pina could tell that his joy overpowered his fears as they passed one of the massive beings.
The redhead watched as Tuka waved to one that was watching them and was pleasantly surprised by the Giant smiling at them and waving back at her. What's more was the fact that Pina could see winged demi-humans perched on his shoulders, who waved back at them as well. It was truly remarkable that the FEF had acquired Giants to fight alongside them and to top it off, they were actively working with other species. She could only imagine that Fiore itself was an accepting country for all walks of life, though a part of her felt saddened how easily the demi-species could be convinced to join those across the gate because of that acceptance.
As the moment passed, the Pelican shifted into a new direction as it made its way into a familiar landing zone where dozens more of the similar craft were docked. Ever graceful as the vehicle was, it made its descent, and Pina wondered if the soldier would tuck his legs back into the Pelican. She was curious when he didn't move even when the ground grew closer until they were less than two feet off the ground, that's when the soldier hopped off and made a bit of distance away from the craft. The redhead watched him make a few hand gestures toward the front where the drivers were and with every gesture did the craft shift until it landed safely. Though they were closer to the ground, Pina noted how tense Bozes was throughout the landing until the craft made a complete stop.
Gray was the first one off as a new team of soldiers were making their way towards the Pelican, the young man being saluted to before he gave some type of orders and the team dispersed. Once they cleared out, Gray turned to the group still aboard and gestured for them to come down. Pina watched Bozes quickly, but surprisingly gracefully, step off the Pelican and stood nearby Gray who tried his best not to look amused by the ringlet blonde's actions. Pina followed right after her, but at a much slower pace since she wanted to take in the sight of what the FEF had made of the Valley.
It held some similarities to the JSDF base, but it was far more different in the look of their buildings and the many different types of soldiers that were about. Some also wielded staves like the JSDF and then some carried a blade, which was quite interesting to her since she would've thought they'd all fight with those staves than a simple sword. Though there was more concern to be had when she had taken notice of the soldiers donning a black armor, with a much more threatening air about them and were obviously not part of the FEF's standard military.
"So this is what happens when you blend fantasy with modernism, quite the sight if I had to be honest," Sugawara commented as he stood next to Pina, slightly surprised by the Japanese man's sudden appearance.
"If this intrigues you, then I wonder how you'll react to Guns Magic." Gray chimed in as he drew closer, Pina noticing several curious looks from the other Japanese.
"Hold on, are you telling me that there is a specific magic that uses guns?" Kuribayashi asked and even Pina couldn't believe that such weapons are amplified even more with their magic.
"Pretty much, the troops are armed with magic weaponry but there are mages who specialize in the craft of Guns Magic. Like it's been said, magic takes many forms that just needs the right will to wield them." Gray replied and none of the group had much else to say about the subject since Pina could assume that everyone wanted a demonstration of this magic.
"Tell them all the wonders of Earth Land before they even get there, why don't you." Came the collected voice of Ambassador Myu as she made her way towards them with her guard of black-armored soldiers behind her.
"Just a small taste of what's to come is all I gave them, Lady Brandish," Gray replied and it was a jarring experience to hear him shift tones so easily, especially when he had to regard someone else as a superior.
"You'll leave them wanting more with tidbits, so tell them some of your own exploits instead. Easier on the mind to see everything first hand than for them to continuously ask for more information." That aloof attitude really was something else in Pina's opinion, but she knew that the green-haired woman could afford to do so after her stunning display of power.
"I think it best that I just drop it, for now, I don't have a lot to tell anyways, Lady Brandish." It was still strange to hear Gray speak that way, but it wasn't hard to hear the subtle annoyance in his tone.
"And I thought Yanagida had it out for you, Itami," Rory said to the soldier who gave a nervous laugh in reply, but the redhead saw how the Apostle had garnered the eye of the Ambassador.
"Just a simple suggestion is all I gave to Gray, nothing more." Ambassador Myu said as she eyed Rory, though the Apostle merely gave her a cheeky smirk at what she was doing.
"My, you must have an eye for someone like me, or else I would assume you're sizing me up," Rory said as she directed a challenging eye towards the Ambassador, who simply let out a huff and rolled her eyes.
"I was just curious to know whether or not my magic could affect someone that's been touched by divinity unless you're willing for a little experiment?" Pina couldn't believe someone would outwardly claim such a thing to an Apostle of any kind, much less ask if they'd agree to try.
"Oh my, now this'll be interesting to see. I accept, show me what your mortal magic can do." Rory replied with a giggle and Pina couldn't help but worry what the Ambassador would do once she failed to affect the Apostle in any way.
The redhead watched the Ambassador size up Rory once again, a simple head tilt when she believed the green-haired woman had figured it out before she snapped her fingers. Everyone waited for a brief time to see if it had taken effect, but nothing seemed to happen and Ambassador Myu tilted her head to the other side. A pensive looked passed by her features for a moment before she made a small hum and snapped her fingers again.
This time something did manage to happen as a small puff of smoke enveloped Rory for a moment, much to Itami's shock and worry. Pina knew he had nothing to worry about as the halberd she wielded still stood tall and another giggle emerged from within the smoke, the princess concluding that the Ambassador's magic must have been canceled and the smoke was the result of it.
"What a pity, I expected something to occur. Although I will say that I feel slightly heavier for some reason." Rory said as the Ambassador gave a half-smile and allowed the smoke to dissipate, revealing a shocking sight for everyone present.
As the smoke cleared, the petite form of Rory was no more for in her place stood a mature and busty woman. Her raven hair swayed in the wind as her attire transformed itself to match the new body she possesses, the halberd no longer being twice her size and her very form radiated with a beauty that was otherwise hidden because of her petite body and stunted age. Pina noticed Kuribayashi take a quick look at her bust before staring back at Rory's now ample bosom and a face of surprise sprang up in realization. Pina wouldn't even bother trying to compare hers as it was fairly obvious that there was no competition between the two, something she inwardly cringed at given to what she was used to seeing of the Apostle.
"I wasn't going to use my body for reference, so I used the next best thing that came to mind." Ambassador Myu said as Rory was simply mystified by her new "grown-up" body, from the length of her limbs to every new curve she'd never felt before.
"Dare I ask who you thought of, Lady Brandish?" Gray rhetorically asked as he too was amazed by the transformation, although wasn't willing to show a lot of it.
"It was Lucy." The Ambassador simply replied and Pina tried to wrack her brain to remember which person that was, only having the faintest of ideas who she meant.
Gray turned to look at Rory again, remarking something to himself although it seemed that the Ambassador had heard him as she raised a questioning brow at him. The dark-haired young man didn't notice it until he turned back around to face her, confused by the look she was giving him.
"I wouldn't have thought you were paying that much attention to Dimaria." The Ambassador said and Pina could've sworn a faint tinge of pink brushed his cheeks as he turned away from the green-haired woman's gaze.
"It was just a simple line of reasoning since she seems rather close to you is all," Gray replied as he did his best to keep himself steady, looking at anything in particular around him, to avoid facing the group.
Pina was speechless to see Gray in such a state, blown away at how easily the green-haired woman managed to fluster the otherwise collected young man. She found it...adorable that he made such an innocent mistake and reacted similarly, far from the battle-hardened ice mage she met at Italica. The princess now understanding what Bozes meant when she said that his demeanor naturally changes given the situation, which was very interesting to see such a thing.
"I can't believe the Princess of the Empire actually showed up on our doorstep." Came the aggressive tone of an all too familiar dragon that Pina feared to meet again.
The pink-haired dragon was making his way with an entourage of soldiers and familiar faces over to the group, which Pina tried her best not to shake beneath his gaze. Bozes hadn't met the dragon before, so she was already prepared to stop her when she made to defend her after hearing his tone. He glared at her for a time before he looked past her to see the others still focused on the now-adult bodied Rory, to which his glare transformed into confusion.
"Who's that?" Natsu questioned as he pointed at Rory who took a seductive stance which Pina thought would be far more effective in her form. "She smells and dresses like Rory, but she's much smaller than that."
Pina wasn't surprised that it did not affect a dragon, even in human form, since he didn't seem to react in any way to her stance. With a shrug, Rory decided to drop it as Tuka and Lelei continued with their examination of the demi-goddess as they've never seen magic do that to a person.
"That is Rory, merely fiddled with by my magic." Ambassador Myu replied to his question as he slowly nodded his head and turned his attention back to Pina.
"So, what brings you to our base? I got word that the Princess was on her way and I had to see it for myself," Pina could feel her hands grow clammy under his gaze and a part of her hoped the group that came with him all don't feel the same way as he does. "I've got to admit, you've got a lot of guts coming here after what your people pulled."
"That's enough, Natsu" Came the commanding tone of the War Maiden as she made her way to the forefront of the newly arrived group. "Princess Pina has come to finally settle this dispute and put it all behind us."
The War Maiden stood between her and Natsu and was ever so grateful that she was willing to see reason instead of pure anger. Whether the dealings the dragon had against the Empire would ever subside was left to the wind, but the redhead knew that the rest of the FEF had to be quelled before everything becomes irredeemable. The most prominent person who needed it being Natsu, as she's heard tales about soldiers who've faced him in battle from passing conversation at the JSDF base.
"I'll believe it when I see it." Natsu huffed as Pina did her best not to look him in the eye, knowing that she'd grow extremely nervous under his gaze.
"Well, you're in luck. Pina is crossing the Gate to meet with Queen Hisui in person." The War Maiden seemed pleased with this course of action and it was surprising to see the astonished look on the pink-haired dragon.
"Looks like I'm heading back to Earth Land, too!" Natsu exclaimed as he quickly turned on his heel and dashed away to who knows where.
The rest of the group that came with him all looked at each other with confused stares before deciding to follow after him, albeit at a much more leisurely pace. Pina sighed to herself as she had hoped the dragon wouldn't be coming along this trip to their world, but fate teased her once again. On the other hand, she was glad he'd come since it meant that the fate of the Empire was far safer without him on the cusp of destroying it out of revenge.
"Looks like Dimaria is out of luck," Ambassador Myu spoke up as she watched the pink-haired dragon race off further into the base. "I've got to finish preparations so I'll leave you, for now, Gray."
"As you wish, Lady Brandish," Gray responded as the Ambassador began walking away, snapping her fingers as she went.
As she did, Rory was once again consumed in the smoke until it dissipated and revealed the original form of the Apostle once again. An audible whine escaped the Reaper's mouth at being turned back to her original self and Pina was just glad to see the Apostle that she was familiar with. Though she was rather curious as to why Kurata was playfully elbowing Itami's arm with an expression of sympathy on his face.
"You're going back home too, Erza?" Gray asked and the War Maiden shook her head, much to both their surprises as Pina had hoped to have her on the other side.
"I'm afraid that I'll be needed here to oversee the Special Forces movements, but it'll be alright. I got Laxus to go in my stead and I think it's for the best since he's overseen the Special Forces for quite a while already." The War Maiden explained and Pina felt lucky to have discovered that she was in charge of their military's Special Forces, even if it meant that the elites were very powerful beings and mages.
"Wait a minute, so all you guys were Special Forces this whole time!?" Kuribayashi was flabbergasted by the news from what Pina could understand, which was the same reaction when the brunette discovered that Itami was also Special Forces and a Ranger.
"I would've thought that was obvious, how often do you see a mage willingly jump into a fray headfirst?" Gray asked and was met with a glare from the shorter woman who didn't seem to appreciate his sass.
"Well, sorry! I haven't met a magic wizard before to know what is normal and what isn't." Pina could tell that the short woman was a tad annoyed, though there was still a hint of awe to the new information.
"Normal isn't something that's often used to describe higher-tiered mages and a rarity when it comes to Fairy Tail, I can tell you that much," The War Maiden said as she gave a relaxed smile towards the group. "I do wonder if you'll see the guild while you're there, could be a real treat to meet the others."
"One thing at a time Erza, first they've got to get ready to cross," Gray said as the War Maiden gave an understanding nod before Itami raised his hand to get their attention.
"C-Cross? Aren't we just here to meet the higher-ups in your base?" Itami looked genuinely confused and Pina noticed him go into a fit of annoyance aimed at Yanagida.
"Surprise, I guess. You're all headed to Fiore to meet with Queen Hisui." Gray said and the redhead watched as Itami's posture droop knowing that he's crossing over again.
"Well then, I suggest we don't keep our generous host waiting too long," Sugawara said as Pina made the first step towards Gray, the dark-haired young man catching on and began to lead them through the base.
As the group made their way through the base, they came across various training zones built for specific types; from weapons training to melee combat. Pina had noticed that it wasn't just limited to that either as there were zones in place for mages to spar with one another, which fascinated the magical girl in their group. The princess turned her head towards the sound of treads moving across the ground to see a massive tank moving across a plain, it shared similarities to those that the JSDF had although this one was much bigger. As she turned to show Bozes, she caught sight of Itami also pointing it out to the rest of his squad as it rolled by before it stopped at a designated spot.
Unlike the JSDF tanks, Pina watched as this one's treads split open into four separate segments before raising itself upward until the treads moved into position to form legs. It stood on all fours before the barrel jutted out the main body and moved onto a higher spot, seating a portion in a protective dome. She watched as it moved into position on all fours and angled its barrel at a certain point before settling itself. Pina now believed that those things could be considered iron elephants more than anything and feared what kind of devastating power it possesses given to what tanks could do. Before she could question Gray about it, Pina heard more of the similar noise at the other side and could see a similar tank take the same form.
"You know, I never would've thought magic and modernism could create something as crazy as that tank," Itami said towards Lelei who was merely mind blown with all the magical advancements around her, by Pina's guess anyway.
"I share your wonderment, that tank has magical properties completely foreign to me and carries immense magical power within," Lelei replied and Pina grew worried at how massive the magical difference was if she couldn't comprehend what made the tank work.
"Not to mention that they double as artillery and have Giants guarding the entrances," Kurokawa added as she took a glance towards the behemoths who seemed to be conversing with the harpies perched on top of their shoulders.
"Quite the fascinating sight, wouldn't you agree, Third Princess?" Rory asked towards Pina who grew very nervous to answer. "The Empire truly makes the brightest choices in who their next target would become."
"Hmm" Pina merely hummed as she couldn't truly answer the Apostle without damaging the Empire's image or falling into a trap the Reaper had no doubt set for her.
"Father, could you imagine what it would be like to ride atop of a Giant?" Tuka innocently asked Itami and once again, Pina couldn't understand her reasoning for doing regarding him as such.
"I'd prefer to keep my feet on the ground," Itami replied without batting an eye which the redhead couldn't understand how no one seemed to question the elf about her choice of a new father.
"I've been meaning to ask; who's your elf friend, daughter, I guess? I remember seeing her in Italica for a bit, but never got around to asking." Gray slowed his pace so that they could hear him and Pina just realized that the young man has never really met Tuka before.
"I'm Tuka Luna Marceau from the Kowan Forest and you are?"
"The name's Gray Fullbuster, a pleasure to meet you," Gray replied and Kurokawa gracefully elbowed Itami as he gave a short snort at the young man's last name, which Pina was unsure as to why he laughed.
"Nice to meet you too and your friend?" Tuka asked and Pina, like the others, was confused at her request since she had already met the War Maiden some time ago.
"That's Erza Scarlet. I thought you knew her already. She told me about meeting an elf a while ago."
"No silly, I mean the one within you." There was a moment of silence amongst the group as they walked, unsure of what to make of her claim and Pina could see a devilish grin appear on Rory's face from the corner of her eye.
"Another time, maybe." Gray simply replied as he returned to his original pace, Pina now unsure of what to make of the young man after that.
"Doesn't that sound suspicious," Kuribayashi muttered as she eyed Gray wearily and Bozes followed suit since Pina did not doubt that the ringlet blonde was curious about what he was hiding.
"I hear you, but I don't think we should start asking questions until he's ready. Never know what's going on and asking needless questions won't help in the long run." Itami said as he gave an understanding glance towards Gray before turning to look at Tuka. "But what did you mean by his friend within him?"
"She's referring to the soul tagging along with Gray," Rory answered as her smile grew a little wider, much to Pina's worry.
"He has two souls in him? How'd you catch that?" Itami asked as even Pina was unsure of how either of them could even tell in the first place.
"It's rather simple as Rory is an Apostle of Emory, so she is given the ability to sense souls around her. It's also how she becomes their beacon to be cleansed through her body if they come from a battlefield." Lelei began to answer as she motioned to Rory with her staff and then pointed over towards Tuka. "As for Tuka, she is an uncommon forest High Elf with strong connections to the spirits of life itself, she can commune and see the spirits around her just as Rory can."
"Well done, Lelei." Rory praised the blue-haired girl as she went back to watching Gray's back. "I'm simply curious as to who or what has decided to latch onto Gray."
"I'm guessing neither of you can tell what it is aside from being another soul, huh?" Kuribayashi asked as she finally decided to turn her gaze away from the ice mage and back to their surroundings.
"I'm afraid not, all I can tell is that it's almost in sync with Gray, but it's powerful and has this dark energy to it," Tuka replied and now Pina was far more confused as now she was worried about continuing her dealings with Gray if a dark entity resides within him.
"It's close to a symbiotic relationship, although it's nothing in comparison to Natsu," Rory said and now Pina couldn't help but feel afraid of what she had to say about the dragon. "There's a mutualism between Gray and his soul whereas Natsu shares a parasitic one with his."
"Is there any reason to worry about Natsu, do you think he'll become a risk?" Tomita asked as Pina understood that it was one thing dealing with the ice mage who was composed where Natsu was chaotic and has done questionable things in battle.
"Hard to say, Natsu seems to be the most in control for the time being. If that secondary soul takes over, I'm unsure what it could spell." Pina could tell that Rory was truly puzzled and it worried her for what it could mean to the Empire if this second soul was let loose in that Dragon's body.
"Nothing good I can assure you, that soul in Natsu isn't normal," Tuka added as Pina had to assume that the elf spent time around the pink-haired dragon to get a good read of that other soul.
"Yes, it's almost like an affront to nature. Something that shouldn't exist but does." The Apostle's words shook Pina to her core as she's heard tales from Grey about Gods who punish those that blaspheme their power. "It's artificial and unfortunately powerful as well."
"Then I guess we have to be extremely careful and hope that everyone else can handle it." Itami voiced and Pina was on board with allowing the FEF to handle the second soul if it ever broke loose within Natsu.
"As much as I agree with your words Itami, I ask you to hold onto your assumptions as we can't so brazenly make claims to members of the very kingdom we are visiting," Sugawara said as he adjusted his tie, but Pina couldn't shake this uncomfortable feeling she had. "We must show respect and present ourselves as trustworthy allies."
After all the new information Pina had heard, she grew fearful of relations deteriorating with the FEF as it would allow Natsu freer rein towards his actions. The princess has only ever seen Natsu bear his fangs at her and has always shown nothing short of aggression at the mention of the Empire, so Pina had every right to be cautious about the pink-haired dragon. If he set foot in the capital then it would be reduced to rubble and ash at his own hands because it was her father who chose to continue their slave trade and hopes to expand. Now she was forced to deal with powers far beyond anything she thought possible and do it with no support aside from those closest to her.
She wasn't much of a believer in the gods, but now she prayed toward any of them to give her strength.
