BPOV
This was the worst pain I've ever felt, it felt like my brain was being crushed with an iron grip. I was both aware and completely unaware of what was happening around me. I didn't know if I had screamed or was screaming, but Charlie rushed into my room with a panicked look on his face. He grabbed the tank next to me, and placed the cannula on. I wasn't sure what he was saying or if he was saying anything, but I felt myself being carried away.
Everything made it worse, any light, sound, any stimuli. There was nothing I could do. I hoped Charlie hadn't seen Edward there, but I couldn't even focus on that. I couldn't muster the effort to think about the consequences of letting myself be pulled into the darkness. All I could do was close my eyes, and try to separate myself from the pain, it wasn't really a choice to retreat into darkness. It was enveloping me.
Then, thankfully, the world went black.

It was the middle of the night when Alice came to Bella's window.
"What are you doing here? You'll wake her," I said sharply.
"Edward. I saw-" Her words cut off. It was only a moment but I saw her vision. Bella waking, screaming, doubled over in agony. "You can't be here when Charlie hears her."
I was in disbelief. I knew she was trying to pull me outside, but the overwhelming urge to be there for her, to somehow help her kept me rooted in place. "Edward, it'll be any minute now. Come on. You'll be with her in a few minutes. Carlisle will help her. I already told him he's on his way to the hospital now."
I saw Emmett next. Of course Alice had brought reinforcements, she was right to do so. I didn't want to wake Bella, I wanted to give her this last moment of serenity before she awoke in such anguish, so I let Alice drag me out. Not a minute later, I heard her blood curdling scream. I felt myself go cold. Emmett's iron grip held me back from going to her, I tried not to fight him, but my instinct was to go to Bella. Alice stood in front of me, blocking me from Bella. I saw the distraught face of Alice for her future friend. Even Emmett flinched at her screams.
I watched as Charlie carried Bella to his cruiser, she was light even for a human. I had noticed very subtle differences in Bella the last few weeks. A human wouldn't be able to notice, but I saw her getting slightly thinner, slightly paler, more breathless as each day had passed. She wasn't screaming anymore, she looked unconscious, but to my relief I heard both of their heartbeats. You could hear her heart working hard, being put under strain with the insuperable pain. As soon as he was off, we were running to the hospital.
We had beat Charlie there, but he wasn't far. Carlisle was waiting for us at the entrance.
"Edward," he said in a calm, collected voice. "She'll be here soon, you'll need to give me room. You won't be able to see her right way. She'll be okay." I could barely register Carlisle's words.
"It'll be any second now," Alice said. "We shouldn't let Charlie see us."
Before I could protest, Emmett was pulling me away from the entrance.
I saw Charlie carrying an unresponsive Bella through the doors. She was placed on a stretcher when Carlisle got to her. The next hour was agony. A human wouldn't have made it to the hospital so fast, so we had to wait. After the hour, I walked in with Alice. I looked around for Charlie, and found him in the waiting room.
I had never seen him like that. He looked like he was in as much misery as I was. His thoughts, though still unclear, all surrounded Bella. He was replaying hearing her scream.
"Charlie?" The worry was evident in my tone.
"Edward? What-what are you doing here?" His voice was shaky, filled with exhaustion.
"My father called me. I hope that's okay. I wanted to see if she was okay."
"They haven't told me anything yet. She just-... I don't know what happened, she woke up screaming, she looked like she was in so much pain. She was unconscious when I brought her in." He was shaking his head. His face was pale, the distress clear in his voice.
Carlisle was blocking me from his thoughts, whatever it was, wasn't good. I tried not to catastrophize, but with each tick of the clock, my resolve wore thin. I fought the urge to smash the clock in my impatience.
It was hours before Carlisle came to update Charlie.
"There is new tumor growth, Charlie. There was fluid in the lungs preventing oxygenation. We have a tube in to drain it, but this new growth is making it harder for her to get the oxygen she needs. She may need to wear a cannula from now on. I'll have to see how her oxygen levels are when the fluid is drained, and when she is awake." His thoughts were much the same. He was trying to make sure Charlie didn't worry more than necessary. "You can see her now if you'd like, but be warned there is a tube for the draining, and she's sedated."
'Edward, let him see her, after I send him home, you can stay with her,' Carlisle thought.
I wasn't sure how he was going to send Charlie home, but I slightly nodded.
Charlie nodded, and started to follow Carlisle. I stayed in the waiting room trying to remain patient. Alice was sitting right next to me, her thoughts were a mix of worrying for Bella, trying to comfort me, and seeing glimpses of Bella's future. There were so many images, half of them ended with Bella in a casket, the others were Bella with red eyes. The only constant was me, this brought me solace. I would be with her until the very end, in immortality or in death. It was the images of Bella in a casket that broke my undead heart.
If I could cry, tears would be streaming down my face.
Nobody deserved illness like this, but Bella, she was, is the most pure being I had ever known. She was good. I couldn't understand why she was cursed to this suffering.
Alice's thoughts were still going back and forth.
"Please stop," I said sharply after seeing another image of Bella being laid to rest.
"Sorry," Alice started reciting the alphabet in a number of different languages to block her thoughts.
"I'm sorry," I said shaking my head. Alice gripped my shoulder. Every few minutes we shifted to keep up the human facade, but with each shift, I felt myself get more restless. I had existed a long time, and never once did I get this restless, useless feeling.
It took forever for me to hear Carlisle's thought directed to me. 'Charlie's going home. I told him to try to get some sleep, that Bella wouldn't want him to just sit here. I told him I'd call if I had any updates.'
I detested Bella's name being used in the past tense. It enraged me almost beyond rationality. I took a deep breath.
Then, I saw Charlie enter back into the waiting room. He approached me with the same pained look on his face.
"I'm going to head home. I'm coming back tomorrow to check on her, maybe I'll go to work." 'As a distraction,' his thoughts finished. "She would hate for us to interrupt our lives. She'll play it off as not a big deal even if it most certainly is. Well, you know how she is." His voice was gruff and unsteady.
I chuckled humorlessly, I know exactly how she is, how she would play this off as unimportant.
I nodded. "Yeah, I'll head home soon," I lied, I would not be leaving her side. Alice was pretending to sleep in the waiting room chair. "I should probably take her home."
"Thank you, for being here for her, the both of you." His head pointed to Alice, who could most definitely hear him. "She needs people, as much as she thinks she doesn't." His thoughts were nothing but sincerity and gratitude. I nodded again.
"I care for her, very much." This was an understatement, I was so deeply in love with her that it almost hurt. He nodded slightly and then left.
Carlisle reappeared by the door, nudging his head in the direction of Bella's room. 'Follow me'.
He was trying not to think about Bella. He stopped just short of her room.
'Edward, it isn't good.' I braced myself, "How long, Carlisle?"
'It's hard to say, she could have weeks, months, a year if we're lucky. Her last Chemotherapy didn't go well, it barely helped, and an infection almost killed her,' I shook my head in disbelief. 'It depends on the rate of growth. I'll ask her if she's open to trying treatment again, but it could kill her faster.'
Theoretically, I knew this. I had several medical degrees, but a foolish, naive part of me wanted to cling to hope. I clenched my jaw, "She won't. She won't put her parents through that again."
'Have you thought about changing her?'
My head snapped up at Carlisle. "Carlisle." My voice was sharp, he knew how I felt about my soul, about what I was.
'Have you ever thought about asking her? Maybe she wants to be with you forever. Maybe she doesn't want to be like us. You shouldn't make this decision for her. If you love her, you'll make it together.'
"You know how I feel about her." I was trying to remain calm, but I was failing.
"I do." 'Think about what will happen, I can see it on your face, losing her will destroy you. You know it too. Maybe she feels the same about you.'
I scoffed. I hoped she did, but she is a human, could she really feel as deeply about me, as I did for her? And if she did, could I really reconcile with what I felt about myself in order to change her? I couldn't think straight until I saw for myself that she was okay.
"I'm going to see her."
He stopped me again, 'There's blood, you can smell it. Are you certain you can handle it?'
I nodded, after hearing her scream and seeing her in Alice's vision like that, there was virtually no bloodlust left for her.
I only wanted her, not her blood.
When I walked in, seeing her felt like a punch to the gut. She wasn't intubated thankfully, just a cannula to help with oxygenation, a tube protruding from her side, an IV for medication, it pained me to see her lying there. Carlisle had given her pain medication, so she was unconscious. It was strange to see her lying there, she wasn't talking like she normally did when she was sleeping. She was too sedated. So I just sat next to her, holding her cold hand. I wasn't sure how long I had been there, when she started to stir, the monitor starting to beep a little faster.
"Carlisle, she's starting to wake up," I said. I knew he was still on this floor, so he would be able to hear me. He was in the room after a minute.
I heard her sigh. I think she knew where she was.
