Erica ran down the field kicking the ball between her feet before passing it to her teammate so she could run ahead past the opponent to score a goal. Her teammate attempted to pass it back before the other team stole the ball. Erica furrowed her eyebrows and ran after the ball more determined to win. She stuck her leg out to take the ball, tripping the other player to the ground.
Erica took the ball from her and started running back towards her goal. She kicked it as hard as she could when she saw an opening and scored. The ref blew the whistle for half time and Erica ran to the sidelines to her mom. "I scored!" she smiled
She wrapped her arms around Erica tightly spinning in a circle "you did so great!" she smiled. "I'm so proud of you" she kissed her cheek putting her down. Monica grabbed Erica's water bottle to give to her.
An angry mother marched over to Monica holding her own daughter's hand. "Your kid tripped my daughter, that's against the rules."
Monica turned to face the mother crossing her arms. "The ref would've called a penalty if it was necessary. If my daughter taking the ball from your kid offends you, maybe they should be better at defense."
"She fell on the ground and hurt her knee, you think that magically happened?" she asked rhetorically.
"I think it was gravity," Erica chimed in sarcastically, making the teammates behind her giggle.
The mother glared at Erica and she stepped back putting her hands up. Monica couldn't help but notice she looked exactly like Chandler and she smiled at the resemblance. "If she broke the rules, the ref would've called it, he didn't so she scored fair and square. If your daughter needs a band-aid I have some in my purse, but I don't know what else to tell you" Monica shrugged.
She scoffed, taking her daughter's hand again, and walked away back to the other side of the field.
"She seems nice" Erica mumbled as she took a sip of her water.
"You're just like your Dad" she shook her head with a smile. "Just ignore her okay? You're doing great" Monica knelt next to her and started fixing her ponytail. "You guys are up by four points so just keep doing what you're doing, and focus on getting to the end. Have a snack sweetheart okay?" Monica held out a tupperware of orange slices.
Erica took one and started eating. "Thank you, Momma, where's Daddy?" she mumbled.
"You're welcome and your Dad should be here soon. He just had to pick up Jack from tennis."
"Okay," Erica smiled at her before grabbing another orange slice and going over to the team huddle.
The game had already started again when Chandler came up with Jack out of breath. "I'm sorry we're late" he breathed. "She was not letting Jack out of tennis and then we hit traffic…" he shook his head "it was a whole thing. How is she doing?" he looked out at the field.
"We're up by five. Earlier she scored and a Mom on the other team accused her of breaking the rules because her daughter fell" Monica rolled her eyes.
"Maybe it was gravity's fault" Chandler shrugged watching his daughter run. "Jack has a match next Saturday and I'm pretty sure he's going to win. He's been doing great in practice recently."
Monica smiled at Jack and crouched next to him "how was practice?" she asked.
"Fun!" Jack smiled. "Miss Graf said that I'm doing good and I like hitting the ball over the net a lot 'cause Shane can't do it. I'm going to win on Saturday, I know it!"
She pulled him into a hug "of course you will, you're going to do great sweetheart" Monia kissed his cheek.
Jack leaned into his mom as they all turned to watch Erica as she scored another goal. They cheered her on the whole game. The other team scored, tying the game, and she crossed her arms with a pout as she stomped her foot bitterly. Monica watched her daughter's face turn from disappointment to determination as she took off running to get the ball from the other players as the time was running out. The referee lifted the whistle to his lips as Erica kicked the ball as hard as she could. The ball entered the goal right before the whistle blew and her team erupted into cheers.
Erica ran to her mom and hugged her tightly "we won!"
"I'm so proud of you!" Monica wrapped her arms around her. "We can order a pizza to celebrate. How does that sound?"
"Yeah pizza!" Erica and Jack shouted together.
Monica chuckled softly, taking Jack's hand as Chandler carried Erica to the car to go back home.
