A /N: Hey fellers!
Hope you guys are doing well. I once again bring you a chapter. This one mostly takes place on the Citadel, but it holds the start to the Omega DLC towards the end. I'll write that whole ordeal in the next Chapter… Only God knows when that will drop. Otherwise, I hope you guys enjoy the chapter!
And please, drop some reviews. It keeps me going!

Citadel.
"You sure you're alright Bailey?" Mads asked as he eyed Bailey for any signs of discomfort. Bailey had planted himself back in his chair in his office again. No rest for the weary, but that was pretty much true for everyone on the Citadel now.
"It's probably a good thing you had a medic with you. Doctors told me that the Medi-Gel saved my bacon… Pass along my thanks to Kaminski, will you?" Bailey requested.
"Sure. Did you happen to find that slimy Samuari Jack wannabe yet?" Mads asked.
"No, we searched the tunnels quite thoroughly. Seems he is more slippery than we imagined. He is probably long gone by now." Bailey replied.
"That fucker will turn up again soon enough. And when he does… I'll cut his fucking head off." Mads promised, and it wasn't a threat. When the time comes, he would do just that to him.
"Good… Trouble is, we can't even get a positive ID on him. He must have released some sort of VI into the system that erased all footage of him. He probably didn't trust Udina to do his job properly… Also, that reminds me: We got your friend Thane into the Huerta Memorial hospital. He is in for surgery. Apparently… There are certain complications..." Bailey explained.
"Shit… What's the issue?" Mads asked concerned. He had a hunch feeling that something wasn't right… That Thane would have low survival odds.
"I overheard one of the doctors say that there wasn't much Drell blood on the citadel. I notified his next of kin, Kolyat… You remember, the one that you saved and ran some jobs for me?" Bailey asked
"Yes, I remember him. I assume he is the right blood type then?" Mads answered.
"Yes, he is. I don't know if he is there or not. In fact, it's been a few hours since I received any form of update from them. I would suggest you go down there… The route should be clear of Cerberus." Bailey suggested.
"I will. Thank you Bailey." Mads said as he bowed his head.
"Oh, and you can tell Thane that the Salarian councilor says he is a hero… I don't know, maybe that will make things easier for him." Bailey suggested.
"Of course. I'll see you around Bailey." Mads bid farewell and promptly left the office. He hoped that Thane would make it, but something told him that wasn't going to be the case. At the very least Mads hoped that Kolyat would stand at his father side… until the bitter end.
The route down to the hospital was indeed clear of any and all Cerberus. The entire station was still in a state of emergency, and it would be until this war was over. Chaos had finally showed its ugly face on the Citadel, and maybe this would be enough to wake the population up to the fact that they couldn't hide forever.
The hospitals were getting full almost too quickly. Between all the civilians and refugees, there wasn't a lot of room anymore. This war was taking its toll on everyone. Only God knows how much overtime these doctors and nurses were operating on. When this war is over, if it ever will be over, there will be a lot of time off for everyone. The Galaxy will probably stand still until… Well, for a long time at least. That would still be a desired outcome however… At least compared with certain extinction.
Even in place like Huerta memorial, with all its chaos, people still stopped to look at him. Like he was the only one in the galaxy. There was a marine, who had just gotten the news that his leg would be cut off, and when Mads walked over talked a bit with the marine, he learned just how much people idolize him. The Marine had just learned that his life probably wouldn't be same ever again, and yet the Marine was trying to act disciplined in front of Mads. Apparently, talking with Mads had made that dude's month.
Despite the hundreds of fan letters he got sent every day, he never really realized just how much he meant to the people out there. In some ways, that was a burden he didn't want to carry, but on the other hand he was honored that people thought a fuck up like him was even worth the time of the day. Mads gladly talked with whoever needed someone to talk to. Dr. Michel had informed that he could see Thane in just a bit, so he would chat up all those who needed some company.
Finally, Dr. Michel told him he could walk in, but not before giving Mads a small update. While Kolyat had shown up, and had already given a fair amount of blood to his father… It was rather pointless. Thane's illness was rapidly shooting him in the foot. His body couldn't produce enough blood, and his body was under an intense amount of stress.
"Kolyat is saying his goodbyes… Maybe you should do the same." Dr. Michel suggested.
"Maybe… Maybe…." Mads replied as he took a deep breath. He opened the door to Thane's room. He was greeted with the sight of Kolyat standing by his father. It looked like he was praying, but Mads wasn't too sure. As Mads took a few steps closer, Kolyat turned around to greet him.
"Captain Romanov. I'm so glad you could make it… I'm not sure if you remember me; I'm Kolyat Krios, Thane's son. I came here to donate blood to my father…. He asked me to remove his oxygen mask so that he could… Well, I don't think it will be very long." Kolyat said. Mads placed a hand on Kolyat's shoulder.
"Of course I remember you, Kolyat… I'm-… I'm truly sorry about your father. He is a goddamn hero, even the Salarian councilor agrees with me. Thane helped me save a lot of life… So I'd like to be here with him." Mads requested.
"Of course." Kolyat replied as he stepped aside so Mads could get a closer look at Thane. It was clear that Thane wasn't doing too hot. He was coughing, and he seemed so meek. Mads stepped a little closer as Thane looked over at him.
"Captain… I'm afraid I won't-… I won't be joining you again." Thane remarked in a weak voice. He was struggling to say even the smallest words.
"You have done more than enough, Thane. In fact, you have done more than most." Mads reassured him. He wasn't sure if that was what Thane was looking for, however.
"That assassin should be ashamed of himself… He couldn't even defeat a dying Drell." Thane commented.
"I'll make sure to tell him that the next time I fight him." Mads laughed.
"There is something I must do before it gets worse. I must-..." Thane had to shallow a lump in his throat. It was hard to see Thane like this. Thane coughed a few times as he tried to regain his voice. Kolyat interrupted him. Kolyat prayed for him, very much in the same way Thane used to do.
"Kolyat… You speak as the priests do… You have been spending time with them." Thane said as he looked proudly up at his son. Kolyat stepped over to Mads and brought out a book.
"Captain… I brought a prayer book. Would you care to join me?" Kolyat requested.
"Of course..." Mads replied. It was the least he could do. They both prayed for a bit. The Drell religion was fascinating, but Mads still stuck by his own one. Mads wasn't sure what to think when Kolyat told him the prayer was for him, and not Thane. But he was honored that Thane thought about Mads, even in his dying moments. "Would you mind if I said a little prayer of my own?" Mads asked.
"Not at all, Captain." Kolyat replied. Mads cleared his throat and locked his hands together in a prayer.
"O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the souls of Thy departed servants in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which they have committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth…." Mads held a moment of pause.
"For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen." Mads prayed, and there was eerily quiet in the room. Mads gestured a cross in the air and went over to Thane. He slowly closed Thane's eyes. He always liked that prayer, he thought it was beautiful, but unfortunately… He've had a lot of opportunity to say it over the last few years.
"Rest in peace Brother. For your fight is over, and now your Salvation shall now come." Mads whispered. A small tear escaped down his cheek.
"Thank you Captain… That was beautiful..." Kolyat said.
Mads had headed down to the little restaurant he owned. It seemed to have been shot to hell, or at least the facade was. The interior was surprisingly well kept, and seemed to be in working order. Mads walked in, and saw that Tony was busying cleaning up the remaining blood from the floor. He cursed as the soap just didn't seem to do the job. Mads coughed to make his presence known.
"Romanov! Glad you could make it." Tony smiled as he put the cleaning supplies to the side in order to give Mads a big hug.
"How are you and your mom holding up?" Mads asked concerned. That experience must have been hard.
"We have faced violent customers with guns before, in both St. Petersburg and here on the citadel. But, it was still a bit scary… Mama and I have been talking, and we think that maybe we should go and help the war effort more..." Tony replied. Mads gestured for Tony to join him at the bar. Tony went on the other side to get some Vodka. He poured a glass to both himself and Mads. "So far, the best we could do was offer free meals to all Alliance soldiers… I don't know how to hold a hammer, but me and mom can cook food. If the Alliance needs us, we'll go there." Tony suggested.
"It might be a good idea. I don't know just how safe the Citadel will be from now on. I'm sure Admiral Hackett can find a use for you, if that is what you choose. Of course, the decision is up to you." Mads replied.
"I'll talk it over with mom a few more times before we commit to any ideas… But we want you to know that we are still grateful for all you have done for us." Tony said.
"There is no need to thank me. When I first met you and your mother… Well, I was in a dark place then. Maybe I still am, but meeting you guys helped me a lot." Mads reassured him as he eagerly drank his vodka.
"That goes both ways. But I'm glad you think so. We'll give you an answer within the next few days." Tony promised.
"Well, let's drink a bit then." Mads suggested as he gestured for a refill.
"Won't hear me complaining." Tony laughed as he filled up Mads' glass.
A few hours later…
After talking a bit more, Mads decided to leave the place. He still hadn't caught up with Kaiden yet. He realized that Kaiden might be a little shook up about the whole thing, since they were in fact aiming down sights at each other. Just as Mads gave light to a cigarette, his omni-tool beeped.
With curiosity, Mads opened it up to see what the message was. It was from none other than Aria T'Loak. Mads was confused, he hadn't spoken to that woman in… It must have been 7-8 months ago by now. He wondered what she wanted. It was a simple message, with the simple title of: Omega.
Mads had heard from some sources that Omega had fallen into Cerberus' hands. If Mads had to take a qualified guess, then Aria wanted his help in retaking it. She told him to come and meet him at a specific location, where they could talk. Mads wondered if he should really care. Omega had never been much more than a shit hole to him, but as it turned out… It was indeed in a rather strategic position, and there were in fact innocent people on it… Only God knows why they ever chose to relocate there. Not to mention all the element zero they could pull from those mines….
Mads decided that he would, at the very least, humor her. He quickly hailed a cab, so he could get to where he was needed. The ride to Dock 42 was rather short, but it still gave Mads some time to think. He wasn't really sure what might happen in this war. It had already claimed a few of his friends, and he wondered how many more it would claim before it was over… If it ever were to be over. It was in times like these, that Mads wanted to consult God one more time. To ask just exactly he expected Mads to do. Yet the big man seemed so awfully quiet all the time. That was enough to make Mads wonder if he even met him at all… Or if it was really just the dream of a dying man.
Before he could go deeper into that rabbit hole of a thought, he was interrupted by the cab stopping and demanding payment. Mads quickly transferred the required amount and stepped out of the cab. He looked around for a Batarian named Bray that supposedly was going to meet him there. As he walked a bit further on, he saw a Batarian in armor looking at him. That had to be him.
"Are you the meathead Aria spoke about?" Mads asked.
"Woah! Captain Romanov! What an honor! Oh damn… I forgot my autograph book at home. Curse me!" The Batarian named Bray sarcastically replied.
"Save it ass hat. Where is Aria?" Mads asked, but he couldn't help the small chuckle that was in his voice at Bray's remark.
Bray simply smiled as he gestured to the side. Mads looked over and saw a car fly up and open it's door. Inside was none other than Aria, who seemed to have finally managed to move her ass from that seat in Purgatory. Mads sat himself beside her in the car.
"Aria. Didn't know you were taking me for a drive." Mads remarked.
"I'm afraid there are too many eyes and ears in Purgatory. I need these to remain as quiet as possible. I can't take any chances when Cerberus just tried a push for power." Aria explained as she gestured for the driver to go.
"So, is this about Omega? I heard that Cerberus controls it." Mads asked.
"This is about your war, Romanov. Cerberus controlling the Terminus system seriously bolsters their mobility. Since taking Omega, they have spread through the galaxy… Surely the Alliance has noticed as well." Aria explained.
"Yeah, they have. So, what are you thinking?" Mads asked as he leaned back in his seat.
"I'm gonna take Omega back. I have been gathering Allies to help me in the fight against Cerberus. So, we're going to punch a hole through their line and land on Omega to invade… Once we're on Omega, it's a ground war, which is why I want you… I only accept the best." Aria answered as she began to big up some information on her data pad.
"I'm flattered." Mads replied sarcastically as she handed him the data pad.
"General Oleg Petrovsky is the one currently running the show on Omega… He is… The one who ousted me.
"Petrovsky? I think I heard about him once… Brilliant officer… Didn't know he was on Cerberus side." Mads replied.
"He is the illusive man's top military strategist… And best kept secret. But all you really need to know is that he is a merciless bastard." Aria said.
"So, what do we know about the occupation?" Mads asked.
"His army is massive and he has locked down Omega tight. That about all we know. " Aria elaborated.
"So you're riding on blind luck?" Mads asked.
"Not at all. There are plenty of secrets on Omega that only I know about. Secret that will help us win… But I'll tell you this; Petrovsky's invasion was precise and ruthless… He'll stop at nothing to win." Aria answered.
"That so? Sounds a whole lot like you, Aria." Mads remarked.
"Romanov-" Aria said as she looked over at him. "I know my reputation. I know that my methods aren't usually the most popular. I ruled Omega with an Iron Fist… But at least my people were free. They lives were theirs. I preserved that. This man? He took all that away, and he is going to pay. If you fuck with Omega's freedom, then you're playing with fire." Aria had pure anger in her blood. It was clear she wasn't happy with the hand she had been dealt. She wanted this man dead.
"When Omega is mine again, then I'll give you everything I have: Ships, Mercs, Eezo – All is yours for the war effort." Aria offered.
"Oh yeah? and what is the catch?" Mads asked. He knew there was one. Aria looked over at him with a smirk on her lips.
"I don't care much for the company you keep. I would prefer to keep you to myself." Aria answered.
"My crew are some of the best in the galaxy. Why wouldn't you want them?" Mads asked confused.
"I have already lined up my A-Team. You'll be the spearhead, and you'll even get to meet some old friends." Aria replied.
"And who might that be?" Mads asked.
"That is a surprise. Bray will give you the coordinates to my fleet." Aria signaled for the driver to stop and set them off. "Oh, and while you are on the Citadel, do try to be discreet." Aria requested.
"Understood." Mads replied as he stepped out of the car. Bray got out with him. Before Mads could even turn around, Aria flew off again with her driver. Bray got his Data pad out and pressed a few commands on it.
"The fleet will be here-" He handed over the Data pad to Mads. "We'll move as soon as you arrive." Bray said.
"Copy that." Mads said as he gave a final nod to Bray and headed off. This was probably an offer that was too good to pass up. The chance to get more resources for the war was not something you took for granted. But, Mads tried to figure out just who he might be working with. She said some old friends, so it was bound to be interesting.
Mads spent some time just exploring the Citadel. There was a lot of work being done, just like after Saren's attack three years ago. It was amazing to learn the station still held its head high, but now people understood the reality of war a bit better. Mads wasn't sure if it would help that much in the long run, but he hoped.
He made his way to the embassy. Javik had written a message to him. It said that he wanted to talk. Back in the Prothean cycle, the first thing fall was the citadel, as narrated by Vigil on Ilos.
"Does it live up to your expectation?" Mads asked as he approached Javik.
"I never saw it in my cycle. It fell first. Our government was seated here. As it fell, we were thrown into Chaos… Though, seeing it now is like a dream realized." Javik replied.
"It would have fallen in this cycle as well, if it wasn't for your scientist making sure it didn't happen again. If we lost the citadel now, we would be blind as well. Storing your government here? That's the first mistake of all civilizations it seems." Mads remarked.
"So it's true? You share power?" Javik asked. To someone like him, it was hard to believe.
"Yes, we do. Though democracy can be annoying as all hell sometimes, it's still the best we got. Though it makes me wonder if the civilizations before the Protheans were authoritarian as well." Mads theorized.
"It is hard to tell. But I admire this system, even if it is ineffective. I am glad I got to see this station, even though it is irrelevant." Javik remarked.
"I see this as a small victory. A living, breathing and free willed Prothean standing on the citadel. Just being here out of sheer spite? I like it." Mads reassured him.
"Maybe you are right… It feels… Right. However, I will now return to the Normandy. There is something I must do. Goodbye Captain." Javik bid farewell and left. Mads shook his head at the Prothean. Though he could be forgiven, this was so unlike anything in his time.
Mads decided he would stop by the terminal in the Spectre office, in order to see if there was anything new to go by. As Mads walked up there, he looked over at what used to Udina's office. It was currently locked down. Mads wondered if there would be a new human councilor before the war was over. Perhaps it was better to leave that position open for now. Just as Mads was pondering over that point, he heard someone say his name.
"Captain Romanov? I was hoping to meet you here." Mads turned around and saw that it was a Salarian talking to him.
"And you are?" Mads asked.
"Jondum Bau, Special Tactics and Reconnaissance. I was hoping to enlist your help on something." Jondum requested.
"And what might that be?" Mads asked with curiosity.
"Some information was leaked to me. It suggests that a high level Hanar diplomat might be indoctrinated." Jondum replied.
"That's a pretty big accusation. What do you build that on?" Mads asked.
"Evidence that an Alliance black ops raided a Batarian research station. The Batarians were studying Reaper tech." Jondum answered, in the usual fast paced way the Salarian did.
"Hold the phone… The Batarians had Reaper technology?" Mads asked concerned.
"The raid turned into a massacre. The Alliance ended up with nothing. They faked it to make it look like a power failure." Jondum explained.
"Probably for the best. The Batarian would have wanted war then… But how does any of this involve the Hanar?" Mads inquired.
"They maintain discreet gray market trade relations with the Batarians, and they were the ones to lead the Alliance to the base. We suspect that they might have escaped with the Batarians' Reaper tech. Which could mean they are indoctrinated, if your reports on indoctrination are to be believed." Jondum explained.
"Oh yeah? And who leaked this information to you?" Mads asked.
"It was an anonymous gift, though I believe it to be the master thief known as Kasumi Goto. I've been on her tail for years."
"I see… So you're hunting this thief as well?"
"She is a master thief. Her skills and intelligence are almost Salarian"
"Let's hope she appreciate the praise from the man who is hunting her down." Mads chuckled.
"I only need her data. Though I admire her personally, and since she sent me this, I would assume the feeling is mutual." Jondum theorized.
"Probably. But what do you need from me?" Mads offered.
"I know that the Hanar is a diplomat here on the citadel, but I don't have a public name. And the hanar will go to ground if I make a formal inquiry." Jondum said.
"Ah ha, we're hunting for information then?" Mads replied.
"Yes, I am tracking suspicious transmission to the Hanar home world. I could use your help." Jondum requested.
"I got it. I'll try and see what I can find in the Spectre office." Mads accepted.
"Thanks Captain. And for the record: Not everyone doubted your warnings about the Reapers. I just hope we are not too late." Jondum replied.
"Me too… Me too." They parted ways. Jondum went out to gather more information as Mads walked into the Specter office. It was doubtful that he could find anything in there that the Salarian couldn't, but that wasn't important. What was important was the fact that the Spectre office had the faint smell of a French perfume he hadn't smelled in over six months.
"You didn't take my advice." Mads said disappointingly.
"I do so like this perfume." Kasumi replied as she de-cloaked. "And some day you have to show me how you do that." Kasumi requested.
"What? Smell?" Mads asked with a laugh.
"You know what I mean." Kasumi answered with a sigh. "But it's still nice to see you again, Captain. How have you been?" Kasumi asked.
"Can't complain.. Aside from the all the favors I'm pulling out of my ass to simply try and gather allies. But it's nice to see you are helping Jondum, but where did you get the information?" Mads asked.
"So… Do you remember when you helped me recover Keiji's graybox from Donovan Hock? The one with information that could start a war?" Kasumi tried to remind him.
"The one I told you to destroy?" Mads asked back, with the same disappointing look on his face.
"Well… I did, but not well enough it seems… I pieced it back together… And it was big enough for me to leak it to Bau. If you don't mind, I'll tag along cloaked… Maybe I can help you dig up some information on the Hanar." Kasumi requested.
"Sure, be my guest. It will be just like old times." Mads accepted.
"It sure will!" Kasumi laughed as she once again activated her cloaking.
Mads and Kasumi spent the next 20 minutes going through different channels in the Citadel in order to catch the name of the Hanar they were searching for. It was weird to have Kasumi right next to him, and the man trying to catch her on the comms. Though Kasumi respected Bau for his abilities, and the feeling was mutual. Mads offered her immunity if she joined up with the Crucible project. Though Kasumi was hesitant to do it. She felt like he was offering her another suicide mission, and that might be true, but unless everyone pitches in, then it's murder for all.
"By the way, are you still with Tali? You two were so cute together!" Kasumi asked as Mads hacked a server to get the name of the Hanar operative.
"I don't know. I haven't seen Tali since I turned myself over to the Alliance, and I haven't been able to contact her." Mads admitted. "Have you heard from her?" Mads hopefully asked.
"We kept in contact for a few months after you turned yourself in. She was so worried about you. Did you even know that you are pretty much all she talks about? It's very cute, in a hopeless romantic way. But I haven't heard from her in three months by now. I hope she is okay." Kasumi expressed.
"Yeah, I hope so too. But I have a feeling we'll see each other again… Someday at least." Mads replied.
"Captain Romanov? I got the name of Hanar. His name is Zymandis, or 'Regards the Works of the Enkindlers in Despair'. I think he is in the embassy office right now!" Bau informed them.
"I'll be there in a sec!" Mads replied as he sprinted for the elevator. Kasumi followed after him.
"I'm still not sure if I'll be joining you." Kasumi remarked.
"You don't have to join me. I simply need your help on the crucible. Your hacking abilities are astounding, and could be put towards good use. Besides… There is going to be a lot of Tech just… Lying around." Mads tempted her.
"Hmmm. Haven't thought of it like that. Anyhow, we should try and stop this Hanar first." Kasumi suggested.
"Probably a good idea." Mads replied as he elevator stopped at the embassies. He quickly jogged over to the offices where the Hanar was supposed to be. Bau was already there, waiting for him. He still had no idea that Kasumi was with them, and it was probably best to keep it that way. They all went in, and began searching for the Hanar. It didn't take long before they found him.
There was a human in there as well, eye balling them like hell. He was probably on the payroll of the Hanar. "Are you Zymandis?" Mads asked as he kept his hand firmly on the grip of his Magnum. Hanar weren't known for their agility, but you never know.
"Or should we say: 'Regards the Works of the Enkindlers in Despair'?" Jondum added.
"It would appear this one has been exposed, but such matters are now irrelevant. The work of the Enkindlers cannot be stopped." Zymandis replied, as cryptic as the Hanar always are.
"Why the hell are you trying to aid the fucking enemy?" Mads asked with genuine confusion.
"We learned something very interesting from classified sources regarding the Enkindlers." Zymandis answered
"You mean the Protheans?" Mads inquired.
"Yes, as you are aware Captain; The Enkindlers eventually became the Collectors, and the Collectors serve the Reapers." Zymandis explained.
"Jesus H Christ… Please tell me you're joking." Mads exclaimed.
"And therefore, as faithful servants of the Enkindlers, we too much serve the Reapers." Zymandis said.
"You big dumb fucking Jellyfish. I should kill you right now." Mads replied as he slowly drew his gun from his holster.
"You know, I normally support religious freedom for all… But that's just crazy." Kasumi whispered, and Mads agreed. This was taken too far.
"Your skepticism does not matter. When the Enkindlers uplift us as their chosen sapients, the Galaxy will bear witness." Zymandis proclaimed.
"I highly doubt that." Mads responded.
"Your belief in your victory is mistaken. Our planetary defense network is largely automated. It can be disabled with a single virus…. Which I just uploaded." Zymandis informed them. Tension grew as the possibility of losing the Hanar home world was just in reach.
"Shit!… Wait! A Virus would be detected unless sent on low priority channels, which have a time lag. I may be able to block the upload!" Bau hopefully said, but the human lackey stepped out to try and kill Bau.
"You may be delayed..." Zymandis menacingly remarked.
"Help him! I'll handle this!" Kasumi ordered. Mads aim his gun at the human and blew his head clean off, and then he turned to the big stupid jelly fish that had started it all. Mads never knew Hanar exploded like that on impact…
"Got it! Upload is disabled. Looks like we are in the-…." A beeping noise was heard from the terminal. "Wait! He's got some kind of fail safe. GET DOWN!" Kasumi screamed as she tried to get out of the blast radius. The Terminal blew up, and it shook the very ground on which they stood. By all accounts, it looked like Kasumi kicked the bucket, but she was smart enough to activate her cloak as soon as she 'died'.
"She was here the entire time!" Bau said in disbelief.
"I knew her… She was an old friend." Mads replied.
"But-… I intended to arrest her." Bau clarified.
"She helped me take down the collectors, and she just gave her life to save the Hanar home world. I think we can find her innocent." Mads all but ordered.
"Point taken, Romanov. I was an honor to work with you. When the times comes… I'll be there to return the favor, alongside a few friends." Bau promised.
"Thank you. Let's hope this victory wasn't hollow." Mads remarked as Bau walked out. "You can come out now." Mads ordered.
"It's no fun when you always know." Kasumi said as she, once again, de-cloaked. "But, there is no way you are recruiting me to fight in a galactic war." Kasumi remarked.
"It doesn't have to be fighting. Just do as I instructed before, and you and I are even Steven. And there will probably be a lot of credits in it for you." Mads promised her.
"Okay, fine! You win. I'm in…. And cap? It was nice working with you again." Kasumi replied.
"You too Kasumi. Take care of yourself out there."
"Will do."
With the Hanar home world saved, Mads assumed that he should probably try and get to the Normandy before someone else came along to try and recruit him for a mission. There wasn't a deadline on Aria's quest, but Mads figured it should be done sooner rather than later. So, he double timed it back to Bay D24.
As soon as Mads opened the door to the terminal, he was greeted with Kaiden, who was obviously standing there waiting for him. He was leaning up against the railing, deep in thought about something. Mads could only guess what that might be.
"Kaiden? I couldn't find you… Are you alright?" Mads asked.
"I'm fine, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around what just happened." Kaiden's tone was a bit hard to decipher in that moment.
"Are you angry?" Mads asked to be sure.
"No… It's just-… I'm not used to staring down the gun of someone I worked with so closely. How it all went down, it had me thinking about-… I don't know…." Kaiden was indeed conflicted.
"Come on, let's hear it." Mads prepared himself for another argument with Kaiden. It seems like they were having those every time they met nowadays.
"I feel like… If I hadn't backed down first, then-… Then I fear you will have taken me out… Am I correct?" Kaiden asked.
"To be honest Kaiden, I'm not actually sure. The situation was tense, and the whole Citadel was in jeopardy… If you hadn't gone out of my way, then-… Well, it might have happened… I never want it to happen, and I'm thankful to God that it didn't happen. I understand your confusion, Kaiden… I am just as confused. But what matters is that you came around, that you trusted me." Mads tried to explain.
"But sometimes how things went down is important, Captain. You know, later when you have to live with yourself. Knowing you acted with honor and integrity- When it mattered..." Kaiden was beating himself up over this.
"Are you talking about that rat prick Udina? Look Kaiden, I took that shot because I knew there was no way Udina would surrender. I would do it again if I so had to. I trust you Kaiden, I knew you would come around. I know you act with integrity when it matters." Mads reassured Kaiden.
"Thanks Romanov… And look, there is another reason I'm here… There is someone I would like you to meet." Kaiden gestured for someone to come out of the shadows. Mads hadn't even realized there was a person there until now. When the figure emerged in the light, he knew who it was immediately.
"Lieutenant Shepard?" Mads hadn't seen Jane Shepard in… What must have been 8 or 9 years by this point.
"Captain Romanov. So nice to see you again, though it's Commander Shepard now." Jane offered a handshake, one that he accepted.
"Nice to see the Alliance recognized your skills." Mads remarked.
"You two know each other?" Kaiden asked confused.
"Yeah, I served with Commander Shepard during the Blitz. I recommended her for promotion after that." Mads replied. "And glad to see something became of it. How are your Mother and Brother?" Mads asked.
"They are fine and well. My Brother is serving on the SSV Hong Kong, and my Mother has been promoted to Rear Admiral." Jane was proud as she spoke.
"Nice to hear. So, what's the deal with this reunion?" Mads asked.
"Well, Hackett paired us together in a squad and offered us a position on the security detail for the Crucible. But… We would both love to come and serve on the Normandy instead…. If you would allow us." Kaiden requested.
"You're my brother Kaiden. You were there at the start, I think it is only fitting that you are there at the end. And as for you Commander Shepard; if my memory is sharp, I remember you as one hell of a soldier. It would be an honor to have you with me as well. Go ahead and board the Normandy, I'll speak with Hackett about the transfer." Mads replied with a smile.
"Thank you, Captain. I'm looking forward to fighting with you again." Jane said as she returned the smile. She picked up her bags and went onto the Normandy.
"I wanted to say thank you as well, Captain. And I want you to know: I'll never doubt you again, I promise." Kaiden said.
"I know, Kaiden. Also, I need to speak with you, Garrus and Liara in my cabin after I'm done with my meeting with Admiral Hackett. There is an important matter to discuss." Mads ordered.
"Yes sir!" Kaiden said as he saluted Mads and quickly boarded the Normandy as well. Mads followed close behind.
10 minutes later.
QEC/Comm Room.
"Romanov, I got Anderson patched in. I was just getting him up to speed." Hackett informed him, and Mads was very glad to see Anderson again, even though it was only in hologram form.
"Nice to see you still holding up, Anderson." Mads remarked.
"I'm fine, but I'm more worried about this whole mess. I mean: Udina? I know that son of a bitch was power hungry since day one, but I never imagined this!" Anderson exclaimed.
"I know, but he wasn't really the one in charge. Cerberus had their hands so far up his ass, they could tap his ribs. They were using him to take control of the Citadel." Mads replied.
"What the hell for?" Anderson asked confused.
"Fucked if I know. Best guess is that the Illusive man wanted it shut down to disorganize us, but I don't know for sure." Mads answered.
"It could have been a lot worse. Romanov stopped the assassination of Councilor Valern." Hackett added.
"Kai Leng..." Anderson almost muttered.
"Who?" Mads asked confused.
"That's the name of the assassin. I'll have Hackett send over my reports on him… But take my advice: Be careful, there is no telling what he is capable of." Anderson advised.
"You have met him before?" Mads asked intrigued.
"Kahlee Sanders and I have had our fair share of run ins with him. I once shot him in both legs, but that snake just came back more powerful than before." Anderson explained.
"So… He and the illusive man are pals?" Mads asked.
"That would be my guess. Given all they have done with you and Grayson, I wouldn't put it past them. It's almost certain he is stronger than he was before." Anderson wasn't fucking around with this.
"Thanks for the Intel, Anderson. I'll treat this with as much caution as possible." Mads replied.
"Well, their attempts seem to have had at least one side effect. The Asari are requesting an update on the Crucible." Hackett interrupted.
"Probably because Leng has them scared. But scared enough to send help?" Anderson theorized.
"Yes. The Asari and the Salarian are both throwing in their support. The Salarians have practically given us their entire fleet as a 'thank you' for saving their councilor. My guess is that they understand the reality of war now." Hackett informed them.
"That's great news! And what about the Crucible?" Mads asked. It felt good knowing that at least some good came of the failed coup.
"It's going along steadily. By our estimates, we have completely almost 50 percent of the known work." Hackett replied.
"Really? So damn quick?" Mads was astounded. He had no idea they were so well on their way.
"Yes. Once decoded, the schematics are designed in such a way that allows our researchers to easily translate the information. It's not Prothean specific." Hackett explained.
"And are we any closer on how to use it?" Anderson asked.
"That's still open for debate. But our scientists are certain it can bring enough energy to the table to destroy the Reapers. However, we are not sure how it will dispense that energy? And in what form?" Hackett informed them.
"You mean: How do we stop it from wiping us all out?" Anderson asked.
"Exactly. We believe that the Catalyst is the key to determining how to focus its energy on the Reapers." Hackett answered.
"Well, I'm still working on that. But, I have a request to make." Mads offered.
"Okay, let's hear it Captain." Hackett granted him.
"I have just spoken with Aria. She has promised me Eezo, Ships, Soldiers and a lot of other stuff for the War effort, if I help her retake Omega. However, she has requested that I come alone." Mads said.
"Hmmm… I see. Are you sure she can be trusted?" Hackett asked.
"I have never known Aria to be a liar. A ruthless dictator? Yes. But a liar? No. So, I'm requesting permission to help her on that mission. The Normandy will be commanded by Major Kaiden Alenko until my return." Mads answered.
"I see. Yes, I read your transfer request for Alenko and Shepard. I will approve it as soon as this meeting is over. As for the mission, I'll grant it. Just make sure she delivers." Hackett ordered.
"Yes sir!" Mads replied with a salute.
"Good. Now, I have to leave. Captain; I'll send you a report on the progress of the Crucible. We'll talk more once your mission to Omega is over. Hackett out." And with that, The hologram of Hackett disappeared.
"I have heard stories about Aria, Romanov. I'm not too sure you should do this." Anderson warned him.
"I know Aria. I can handle her. What about you? How is Earth?" Mads asked.
"I won't lie, Romanov. It's hard. The Reapers are destroying everything. We are having problems communicating, so we are mostly organizing on a local level. The Reapers are focusing on the bigger cities, so while I hate to say it…. That gives us opportunity to try and fight back at bit. Mostly hit and runs… Though, Russia seems to be doing quite well." Anderson answered.
"Really? Should have known the Russians are pushing back." Mads said.
"Not really pushing back, but they evacuated their major cities in record time. As far as I heard, they are given the Reapers pause. But, perhaps you should ask Sergei about that." Anderson smiled.
"Wait a minute? Sergei?" Mads asked, and Anderson added a new person to the call. Of course it was the Sergei Mads thought off.
"Well Well, if it isn't Romanov himself. How the hell are you?" Sergei laughed as he appeared. He now dawned full military gear. Mads knew that Sergei had planned to return to Earth, but he didn't know it actually succeed.
"Just peachy. And you?" Mads asked back.
"Not doing too badly myself. How can I help you gentlemen?" Sergei inquired.
"Anderson here was just telling me that Mother Russia is doing her part in fighting back the Reapers." Mads explained.
"Well yes. We managed to evacuate most of the big cities. As far as I heard, the Reapers were confused as hell when they showed up in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Most of the population is hiding out past the Ural Mountains. Say what you will about the Soviets, but they prepared well for a new World War." Sergei informed him.
"Glad to know it isn't all bad news from Earth." Mads proclaimed.
"Indeed. I'm supplying the resistance as best as I can do. Though, what keeps them going is news from the Normandy." Sergei replied.
"That so?" Mads asked with a laugh.
"It's true. Even here, the people get hope whenever news comes from the Normandy. You guys are heroes to them. It keeps morale up." Anderson added.
"Especially you Romanov. I heard that Alliance Division made up of Russian operators has re branded themselves to 'The Tsar's wolves'. They believe you to be the rightful ruler of Russia." Sergei laughed.
"Really? I'm… Honored, I guess?" Mads replied.
"You should be. Oh, and by the way. I left a package for you on the Citadel. It contains a lot of ammunition for your weapons. I figured you would need it." Sergei informed.
"I saw that. And thank you." Mads said as he bowed his head.
"No worries. Anyhow, I have to go. There are still Reapers about, unfortunately." Sergei bid farewell as his hologram disappeared as well.
"I suppose that is my cue to leave as well. Good luck on Omega, Romanov. I know you will make us proud. Anderson out." And so, the last figure disappeared. It was nice to know they were still holding out back there, and it was nice to know that they believed in him. Mads had almost gotten used to being ignored at every turn.
Captain's cabin.
Kaiden was already waiting for Mads in his Cabin. They others would probably be up in just a minute as well. "You want a drink?" Mads offered.
"No thanks." Kaiden politely declined.
"So… You and Shepard… Are you…?" Mads didn't even finish before Kaiden answered.
"Yes we are. And we're both happy."
"That's good. It's nice to know true Romance still exist. I know losing Ashley hit you hard." Mads remarked.
"Yes it did… So what did you want to discuss?" Kaiden asked just as Liara and Garrus entered the cabin as well. A nice subject changer. He still had emotional scars after that.
"Aria T'Loak offered me a deal: Help her retake Omega, and she would provide me with resources to help me finish this war." Mads explained.
"Aria T'Loak? Are you sure she can be trusted?" Liara asked. She, as the Shadow Broker, knew well of Aria's reputation.
"I believe she will uphold her end of the Deal, if that's what you mean." Mads replied. "And to that end, I'm making Major Alenko the CO of the Normandy until my return." Mads ordered.
"Me? Are you sure Captain?" Kaiden asked confused.
"You have proven yourself capable, Kaiden. I know that Garrus and Liara would do a good job as well, but it is probably more fitting to have a human in charge of an Alliance vessel. But, I ask that both of you-" Mads gestured to Garrus and Liara. "-Will help Alenko along the way. I don't know when I'll return. A day? A week? A Month?" Mads informed them.
"Of course." Liara replied, and Garrus nodded.
"And as such; Kaiden, your orders are to help Admiral Hackett in any way he deem necessary." Mads ordered.
"Yes sir. I won't let you down." Kaiden promised.
"I know you won't- But please, stay alive." Mads requested.
"Of course. We'll keep the Normandy in one piece until your return." Kaiden promised, again. Mads nodded.
"Well, that was all I wanted to discuss. Joker is flying me towards the location of Aria's fleet. I'll message you when I'm done on that fucking rock." Mads reassured them.
"Understood Captain. And please be safe as well. You are more vital than you know." Liara requested.
"I make no such promises, but I'll try."
11/4/2186
Aria's flagship.
Mads knew something was wrong as soon as he boarded that fucking vessel. He could feel it in his guts, but that was only confirmed once he saw the two individuals he would be working with. It was like some sort of galactic irony coming back to bite him in the ass.
"Look who it is! None other than the Famous Captain Romanov. What a wonderful opportunity!" Conrad Rorke proclaimed as he saw the Captain walking down the hall.
"Captain Romanov." William Sheridan greeted.
"You have got to be fucking kidding me..." Mads muttered.
