From the moment he walked through the door, Eddie knew something was up. Jamie Reagan was a hard person to read for most but after knowing him for nine years, being his better half, as he proudly called her, for almost four years and wife for almost three, she could read him instantly. He had a tell that only she could pick up on and that he didn't even know about.
"Hey you," she greeted cheerfully, walking over and giving him a hug. "How'd it go today?"
"Good," he replied, giving her a quick, somewhat forced smile as he placed his duffel bag on the couch. "Long. How was your day off?"
"Good," she answered. "Just got some stuff done around here. Are you hungry? I heated up some of the leftovers from Sunday dinner. I figured we shouldn't let them go to waste."
"I'm actually not that hungry," he informed her. "I was just going to shower and go to bed."
She gave him a look, "Are you sure? You pulled a double today and I'm sure you didn't have that much time to eat with how busy the precinct has been lately."
"Positive," Jamie responded. He gave her a small smile and kissed her cheek. "I'm okay, Eddie. It was a crazy day. I'm going to take a shower."
He moved past her and made his way into their bedroom, shutting the door behind him. Eddie sighed and decided to put up the dinner, not feeling very hungry herself anymore. She waited around in the living room, catching up on one of her favorite shows to give him some time alone before joining him for bed.
Eddie walked into the bedroom and found him sitting up in bed, reading through his latest book find. She went and put on her usual sleepwear of shorts and a baggy shirt, more often times taken from his side of the closet and slipped into bed beside him.
She stared at him for a minute before speaking.
"Jamie?" she said gently.
He turned his head toward her, "Hm?"
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing," he immediately replied, turning back to his book. "I'm good."
"After nine years of knowing each other, I feel like you seem to forget that I can read you pretty easily, Jamie." She scooted close to him and rested a hand on his arm. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. But just let me know of a way that I can help you because I know that you're not okay right now. I'm here for you in whatever way you need me. You know that."
He nodded after a long minute, "I do. And I love you for it."
"I love you too," she responded.
Jamie placed his book on the nightstand next to him and closed his eyes, taking a long, deep breath. "I was out riding with Rodriguez today and we responded to a call, a body laid out in the middle of an alley. No wallet, not anything on him to find out a name. It took awhile but we were finally able to put a name to him. We had to locate the family and tell them the news. I've done that quite a few times, more than I would like to remember but today just hit me harder than the others. The mom just broke down in my arms, Ed. She was so distraught that we had to call a bus to take her to the hospital and sedate her. I think it got to me because she looked so much like my mom and it made me start to think about when we found out that Joe passed away. She had been gone for four years when Joe died and a little bit of me is glad that she was. I don't know how I would've handled seeing her that way. Is that a bad thing?"
Eddie wrapped her arms around him and pressed a kiss to his shoulder. "No, not at all," she reassured him. "You didn't want to see her have to go through that. No one wants to see someone they love have to go through that. It's okay to feel that way."
"I can't lose another person I love," he said quietly after a few minutes. "... especially you. I really can't do any of this without you. You make everything okay for me. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you. I honestly think I wouldn't be able to take it."
"I can't promise that anything won't happen to me. I would never make you a promise that I can't keep," she said gently, running a hand through his damp hair. "But I can promise you this, I'll always do anything in my power to make it home to you. And I know that you do the same for me. I'm in it for the long haul with you, Jamie."
He leaned his head against hers, "You better be."
Eddie let out a small laugh. "Let's go to sleep, okay? You've had a long day. At least we can sleep in a little tomorrow before having to go in."
Jamie nodded, reaching over and turning off the lamp on his nightstand before laying down next to her. She scooted close and burrowed herself into his side.
"You're pretty great," she said softly, laying her head on his shoulder. "And I feel pretty damn lucky that I have you. Don't let anyone tell you any different. I just wanted you to know that. Goodnight."
He cuddled her closer. "Goodnight, Ed."
