JPOV
Sue had slowly been introducing Charlie into the mythological world that we lived in. She brought him to bonfires where my dad told the legends of our tribe and the "Cold Ones". Right now he didn't believe them, but I was going to change that.
It had been a real thorn in my side trying to figure out how I could manage the pack with Bella and Renesmee living in Canada. I was tied to the reservation, but I was also tied to Ness. I just needed to bring them closer together. I figured letting Charlie in on the pack's little secret, was one less complication with them moving closer.
There was the problem that everyone in town, and most people on the reservation thought Bella was dead. I needed Ness close, so I was making do in Canada, but I couldn't just leave my pack high and dry. Yesterday was the first time I had phased, so that was how they found out about Ness. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, they saved Bella from the other leech. It had been so painful leaving Bella behind the way I did. It was a situation I never wanted to be in again, my best friend or my imprint? It created an ache in my chest just thinking about it.
I pulled into my house to check in with my dad before I went to see Charlie. For the first time in weeks, I hopped on my motorcycle and rode to Charlie's house. I was lucky that he was alone, Sue would have tried to talk me out of it.
He opened the door, and I held back a flinch. He looked terrible. I guess losing a kid does that to a person. His eyes were sunken in, the lines around his eyes deeper than I had ever seen them, and he just looked so lifeless. It reminded of how Bella looked during her last few days as a human. I so badly wanted to tell him that Bella was alive, that he could go to her, but I needed to stick to the plan. One step at a time.
"Jake?" He whispered.
"Hey, Charlie."
"Have you talked to Billy? He's been worried sick," he scolded.
"Yeah, I talked to him. I wanted to talk to you actually," I said as he opened the door to let me in. I walked in and saw all of the wilting flowers that lined the hallway. Along with a stack of greeting cards that all had some cheesy condolence on it. It had been two months since Bella died and no one knew what to say to Charlie. Carlisle and Esme still came every once in a while, Billy and Sue could sometimes get through to him, but there was something different about Charlie. Something deep inside of him broke when he lost Bella.
Great, now I sounded like my dad.
"What's up, Jake?" His gruff, broken voice reminded me of why I was here.
"I needed to tell you something, something big, but you can't freak out. Okay?"
"Nothing surprises me anymore, kid."
I internally scoffed. Like any human, so naive. He hadn't even scratched the surface of this world, there was so much that people didn't know, so much that they were willing to overlook.
Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if no one questioned Bella coming back from the dead. Okay, that was going too far, but I knew people were so caught up in themselves and their own little world that they weren't paying attention.
I knew about the grief eating away at him too.
Another reason I was doing this, I told myself.
I knew what losing your own flesh and blood felt like. My mom died when I was young but even now I knew my dad still felt her absence. My sisters had actually gotten to know her in a way that I hadn't, but even I missed her sometimes. Or at least the idea of her. Thinking about my own loss made my decision so much easier. Charlie hadn't actually lost Bella, he could still have her, to me it was that simple.
"This isn't the world you think it is, Charlie. The legends? They're all true," I rushed out, feeling so determined yet so unsure about what I was actually doing.
"What?" He asked like he couldn't have possibly heard right.
"The legends that you've been hearing? They're all true," I said one more time.
He scoffed and started walking away from me.
"I can prove it to you," I blurted. This was definitely not part of the plan, but what could go wrong? I think his curiosity got the best of him because he followed me to the edge of the woods.
"What are you doing?" Charlie yelled, borderline freaking out as I started to take of my clothes. I didn't answer as I finished taking most of my clothes off. Then I phased.
"Do you have any idea what you've done, Jacob?" Edward growled at me. Jeez, we hadn't fought like that since Bella was a human. Bella rushed outside as soon as she heard him getting heated.
"What? What happened?" She asked, her eye flickering between the two of us. I almost scoffed. She was about to pop, she shouldn't be refereeing the two of us. Edward's eyes softened for the shortest second before remembering what I did. I knew from our little fight that Bella had the strength to take the both of us, but that she wouldn't out of fear of hurting the little monster. Edward's eyes snapped to me again.
I've been calling them that since I showed up here, Bella doesn't get offended, I snidely thought. It probably wasn't the smartest move to egg him on.
"You're finally right, it's not the wisest choice, Jacob. And she may have a Saint's ability to forgive but that doesn't mean she will once she finds out what you did."
"Can you guys just tell me what Jake did?" Bella asked, pinching the bridge of her nose. Something that she had gotten from Edward. His eyes flickered back to mine in victory, but I knew she had picked up somethings from me to, she picked up my favorite saying, 'sure, sure'. Edward's eyes got even angrier and I needed to stop pissing him off with my thoughts before he killed me. Or he could just stay out of my head, I internally scoffed.
"He phased in front of Charlie," Edward snitched. Of course I couldn't trust Mr. Angst to keep a secret. Bella's eyes went wild for a second as she thought about what that meant.
"Are you insane, Jacob? You could have given him a heart attack." I hadn't actually thought about that in the moment, but out of everything he had been through in the last few months, even most of Bella's lifetime was probably more strain than this.
"I'm trying to solve a problem here," I insisted. It would solve a lot of problems. I was one step closer to getting them back to Washington. And Charlie would get to see Bella again, I thought after I saw Edward's menacing glare.
"He can't know about us. He could be killed," Bella sneered. Man, her temper was almost as bad as when she was a human.
"Charlie's in hell without you, Bella. I've never seen him like that before. No one's getting through to him," I said softly.
"Don't pretend like you're doing this for anyone else's benefit, Jake. And how exactly did this scheme play out in your head? You introduce Charlie to our world, and then what? All of Forks thinks Bella is dead," Edward said emphasizing each word, his hands curling into fists.
"I haven't gotten that far yet, but it'll be so much better with Charlie in your lives. Bella, you've been so worried about him, and now you'll have a chance to be in his life again. He'll get to known Ness and the new little mon- baby."
"How much did you tell him, Jacob?" Bella demanded. Yup, she was pretty mad.
"Enough so that he can put it all together himself. If I'm right he'll probably ask Billy about the legends within the next few hours," I guessed, trying not to smirk.
"This doesn't change things, Jake. I want to go back, but we can't risk the exposure. Edward's right, the rest of Forks thinks I died two months ago. We can try to move closer to the Canadian border, but- I don't even know how to make any of this work. You're tied to the rez, and to Renesmee. We won't leave Renesmee, but we can't move back to Forks without implicating all of our family..." Bella started rambling. At least she understood the dilemma I was having too, it was all very Catch-22. She rambled like this as a human too, but now she didn't need to stop for air. She was going to talk herself in circles at this rate.
Thank God Edward leaned in, their foreheads touching and started murmuring reassurances to Bella. Maybe the intimacy of this moment would have bothered me before, but I didn't feel the pain of Bella's rejection anymore. I knew my place wasn't with her. It had always been him. Edward's eyes flickered to mine. I hated that he was always in my head. At least Bella didn't have to deal with that.
"Relax, my love. We'll figure it out," he whispered gently to Bella. Then he looked at me, "I don't like being in your head anymore than you do. And now, you're going to help us fix this mess that you've created."
They arranged for a family meeting before any decisions were made. We all sat in their living room as Rosalie, Jasper, and Edward took turns scolding me. I tried tuning them out, but each time I did, Edward snapped me back to reality.
"Alright, enough yelling at me," I groaned. "Let's go to the part where we decide what to do next, please."
"Alice?" Carlisle asked. "What does Charlie's future look like?"
"Well, as much as I hate to admit it, Jacob is right. He's not doing well," the pixie said, as Bella sucked in a breath. "Billy won't tell him anything."
"He won't be the one to break the treaty, he had too much respect for it," Jasper agreed.
"He'll let Charlie make his own judgements after telling him their legends, he's smart. He'll figure out that we have something to do with it in the next few days. He'll come find us, that's where things start to diverge."
"Bella's due to give birth in the next couple days," Carlisle added. "If we leave Forks, Alice?"
She shook her head, "It won't work. He'll figure it out, then he'll realize it has something to do with Bella."
"Look Charlie's a cop, he has resources that normal people don't have, unless you all want to be in hiding for the next several decades why don't we just tell him what happened?" I said.
"Bella?" Carlisle asked. "He's your father, what would you like to do?"
"So we either tell him and risk his life or not tell him and let him hunt all of you down for the next several decades? But either way he figures out that there is something not right about the family?" Bella asked rhetorically. I could see how hard her head was working, and I quickly wondered if a vampire could get headaches. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see Edward rolling his eyes at me. "Edward?"
"Hm?" He responded, no longer paying attention to me.
"Remember what you said about how you just let me fill in the gaps on my own? You never told me anything. Didn't confirm or deny. A need to know basis? At least at first," she chuckled.
"So just let Charlie think whatever he wants?" Emmett asked.
"More like if he's okay with not knowing the full story, then we can tell him I'm still alive," Bella responded. I had to hand it to her, it was a pretty good idea. They wouldn't be breaking anymore rules, and it was just one step closer to Forks.
"You reveal anything else to anyone else, and Bella won't be what you have to worry about," Edward whispered darkly. We didn't have a chance to disperse before I noticed Alice's eyes glaze over.
Suddenly the pixie, Alice, gasped, dropping the crystal vase in her hand. I wasn't sure what had just happened, but one second Edward was standing next to me ready to kill me, the next he was tightly clinging to Bella and Nessie.
Jasper rushed to her side. While the rest of us waited for someone to explain what just happened.
"Victoria...she- she went to the Volturi," Alice raggedly exhaled. Just from the sound of her breathing I knew nothing good was coming. "Aro...he killed her."
I didn't see the problem. This guy just took care of the problem, it was done and over with. Edward's eyes found mine and he shook his head. Bella sucked in a breath as she intently listen to Alice's next words.
"He didn't tell Marcus or Caius," she continued. "He's coming."
Everyone's eyes flickered to one another as we all wondered about what the hell just happened. And more importantly, what mess had we just gotten ourselves into?
Ahhh a cliffhanger!
I am so excited to finally be able to update this story.
Thanks for your patience and support guys during my little hiatus! I wanted to talk to you guys a bit and give you a story update. So... I'm sorry I've been gone, really and truly. I felt that this story needed my complete focus for at least a little while before I continued working on it, and I haven't been able to give it that. So I apologize. It's been a weird time for me. I graduated college! Which means that I have currently entered the 'now what' stage of adulthood. So that's been really fun... I've been mostly focused on that right now, which has left me with very little amounts of writing time, which sucks. But I've been figuring out ways to carve out writing time.
I am going to eventually rework this story, and I've got a lot of new ideas and outtakes to add to it so I'm very excited. This is the penultimate chapter. Next chapter will be my last. After that there will be an epilogue, we will not leave Charlie hanging guys! And after that...the reworking begins. I'm one of those readers (and evidently writers) that hates when a book ends. I do literally anything to postpone and procrastinate saying goodbye to characters I've grown to love, so I'm sad to say goodbye to this book, but I want to give you guys a good and wholesome ending. (For a while there, I had an alternate ending that made me so sad and upset, so I chose to write something that I, as a reader, would enjoy.
Also shameless self-promo: I'm working on another story! (And even a few one-shots!) It's up and there's several chapters up already, so check it out. *best puppy dog eyes* Please? Before I get any sarcastic comments, that story is already fully written. I do try to learn from my writing and publishing mistakes- most of the time.
Thanks and I'll see you very soon!
