Fancy seeing you here,
I've been loving seeing how people play within the halls of new Erebor but I've seen so few, thought I'd write some myself. I'll be updating this casually as I've had some of these chapters just getting dust on them but if you do like it please let me know, maybe share some ideas, as its always welcome. also, I'm not incredibly well versed in the histories and so it may not be on par with the books or movies so please try to keep it kind.
happy reading,

"I'll see you soon, Gram!" The hooded woman chimed from the doorpost, slipping on her sturdy black boots and placing her slim dark wooden bow into place on her back.
"You be safe, missy! Don't let that baldy tell you to do anything dangerous, remind him that you're not your father; or a lad in general!" She huffed from her spot in the kitchen as she kneed her dough on the countertop, mumbling a small "..goodness and I thought dwarves cared for their ladies. Maybe it only runs in the family then."
The younger one could only laugh. "They do, gram. Dwalin takes care to make sure I'm okay. It's my chosen work, you know this."
Her grandmother could only sigh. "Make sure to be careful anyway, I don't like having you kids so far away. And more so, I don't like all that orc blood on your boots."
"That simply shows that I won." She smirked glancing down at her boots, only a little black ooze remained as she got most of it off. but honestly, orcs bleed way too much for so little. she had only kicked the poor sod in the face a few times.
looking up only to meet a scolding glare her mouth twisted in a grimace before hummed in agreement. "I'll make Nyl come help you with the bakery when we can."
She tsked, "don't worry 'im too much now, I'll be fine. It's a bit of a trek from here to Erebor."
"Hardly, Dale is only a ride away, it'll do em good. I'll see you on my next trip! Be safe and rest when you can." She kissed her cheek, the older lady pulled her face against her own to butt foreheads gently. The dwarrowdam could only chuckle at the small human woman's gesture of endearment. "You spent way too much time with grandpa."
The old woman's laughter flew into the breeze, "well I would hope so, not to mention that my whole family happens to be dwarves."
"Well when you put it that way.." Stealing a cookie from the counter and throwing a last wave as she snuck by, her grandma huffing in amusement as she threw a small piece of scrap dough at her. She ducked quickly, closing the door behind her as she giggled to herself. Turning the corner of the wooden house to find Arena, a pure white pony feeding on some weeds.
"Rena, time to go."
Sunburnt yellow grass lay deceased beside the dirt path her pony traveled upon. Burn marks faded though still in small patches around the enormous field before her, a constant reminder of the history of her new home until his majesty finds himself a green thumb or perhaps runs out of patience with the reminder of his dangerous journey. Though she knew the lack of lush green was yet in sight due to his business within the mountain, then will come the decoration of their front yard. Still she sighed, giving her pony a good pat on the braided mane as the creature released a small complaint. It has been a long trek from the forest, she'll let her complain freely.
"We're almost there, girl. Just a bit more." She comforted. Looking up to the peak just ahead. A dark Iron gate coming into view as they upped the hill. Dwarven towers on each side of the entrance accompanied by several stout guards on each side. New ones, she noted.
"State your business." One of them shouted just when she was within earshot. Which, for dwarves, was far. Had she not been a dwarf herself, aside from an elf she doubt anyone else would have even heard the man. She wondered at just how big of a number did the man not get a response from. She rolled her eyes, not wishing to shout across the path. And simply continued her trek.
Just when he huffed at her lack of reply a solid slap on the back caught him off guard, causing the dwarf to jump and turn around, his mouth open with a retort only for it to fade on his lips. Blinking in surprise as he immediately coughed into his fist, returning to his position.
Two burly darrows stood behind him, crossing their arms with a huff. The one nearest him, the one to have had smacked his shoulder, wore a glare of annoyance at the ignorant dwarf. A almost overly large, perfectly well kept axe held on his back that shown the dedication to his craft and a bald head full of fading tattoos to show his time as a warrior. His silver bead as master of the guard shining in the sunlight within a braid on his beard. The one just beside him, looked on in amusement at the obviously eager recruit. His light blue eyes sparkling in mirth as his deep red mustache curved into a smirk. Seemingly only to be equipped with a small axe on his belt and two daggers in his bracers. Though anyone who knew the second in command would wager against that.
As the dam neared the gate a smile broke out on her features. "Kodur, Sir Dwalin. Fancy meeting you on this fine day." She laughed, dismounting to grab hold of Dwalins bracer and giving it a firm shake. She went to do the same to Kodur only to be slammed into, losing her balance only a moment until she caught herself. "Mahal, Runi! ever heard of a normal greeting?" She shoved him off playfully. The Darrow giving her a lopsided grin as his brown eyes sparkled in happiness and a bit of smug at how easy it was for him to knock her off her feet. That dolt.
She swatted her partners shoulder before leaning up and ruffling his mane of messy brown locks. Careful not to mess up his braids, though fairly easy as he only sported the ones showing he reached maturity and the one with the scouts bead on the end. He pouted and shoved her off. "Just cause you're older, doesn't mean you can treat me like a darrowling."
She smirked in challenge before tackling him as he had, ruffling his hair all the more as he whined and tried to push her away. Which was as he always forgot, incredibly harder than it looked for her small stature when she wasn't caught off guard. She chuckled evilly at his whines just as a throat cleared loudly behind them. Both of their eyes widened as they remembered their superiors. Bolting up, they both dusted off their clothes, standing in a orderly fashion beside Dwalin and Kodur. Just as Kodur started shouting for the group of guard to hear,
"Listen up recruits," earning all eyes as he pointed towards her and Runi. "these two are important members of the guard, they leave when they need to, they return when they need to, as directed by the royal line or a trusted member, it's none of your business to know except to let them go as they please. Any who wears this bead," He gestures to the one on Runi's head, as hers was still concealed by a hood. "Are to be granted access, you got it? Take it as a direct stamp of passage from the king."
"Yes sir!"
"Good, back to your post lads." He huffed in satisfaction. Just as Runi whispered something to the lass and she glared in turn, pinching his arm.
Their superiors and fellow scouts simply looked on in amusement, and the guards stared in amazement. Never had they actually seen the scouts of the mountain, nor had they pictured them to act so playfully. Or to be so young, in general.
Runi and the two higher ups followed her as she took Arena to the stables. Informing them to the sightings she encounters around Dale. Noticing her boots, "How many, lassie?" Dwalin groaned, knowing he would be the one to lead the party to go clean it up and double check the area.
"Just a couple scouts, nothing I couldn't handle." She shrugged, trying to scrape off her boot a bit in the dirt.
"I can't believe you had all the fun without me." Runi pouted. Kicking the dirt as they walked.
"You had the pleasure of accompanying Sir Kodur and Sir Dwalin at the weekly meeting with the king, look happier some would kill for that spot." She sideeyed him. Holding in a laugh as they all groaned, just remembering the how dull the meetings are. Runi glaring daggers her way, to which she knowingly smirked. She had always found a way out of those meetings since she started as a scout and realized just how boring they were. Simply being relied the duties given to her that week. Leaving him to attend the meetings in her place.
"You took awhile, stopped in Dale again, I take it?" Kodur smirked, Dwalin wincing in annoyance.
"Of course, grams sends her regards to everyone." She smiled, mumbling a small "and said 'baldy would do well not to see harm come to my granddaughter' the second my feet hit the lawn." Dwalin thrown his head back with a heavy sigh. The others laughing loudly.
"She'll never accept your loyalties aye? She wasn't even this bad when I was your fathers partner."
"Ay Sir, but she's fiercely protective of her grandchildren." Runi wipes his eyes. "Especially this one." He pointed to the girl who just continued to pat her ponies mane, clearly no longer paying attention to the conversation.
"and if it helps anything, she loves me." Runi laughed, Dwalin shoved him off the dirt path and into the grass. Kodur bent over laughing.
Coming up to the stable keep and speaking quietly to not startle the man. He always preferred animals to others. As she spoke to them, a man shouted to the group from nearby. Followed by a few footfalls. Startling the stable dwarf before she pat his shoulder in comfort. Continuing to talk to him about where her pony could use a wash next as the men spoke to the person calling after them.
She froze completely at the next sentence she overheard, muttering curses to herself as she dropped the reins into the mans hands, grabbed her swords sheath off the saddle and bolted past the group of guards.
Ignoring their confused calls and simply hoping she got there in time as their voices faded behind her.
"..Figured we just let it work itself out, it's the third one this week sir." The guard chuckled.
