Beast Boy paced in the hallway outside of Raven's bedroom door. He fidgeted with his gloves as he thought over what he would say to the girl. He knew that Raven was a pretty secretive person, but he hoped she would solve the nagging feeling he had in his gut about the odd candle in her room. He paused his pacing as he thought about the candle. It was thin and tall but never seemed to burn out even though he knew for months it had been aflame every time he entered her room to ask her a question or bug her until she agreed to come hang out with the rest of the team. It also had golden flecks that none of the other candles in her room seemed to have.

Suddenly, Raven's door swished open to reveal her levitating upright in the center of her room. Her legs were crossed and there was a book in her lap as her cape flowed around her.

"Your nervous energy is making it hard to enjoy my book. What do you want, Beast Boy?" Raven asked from her floating position.

Beast Boy cautiously entered the room. Normally, he would just barge in and relax on her bed or at her desk until she sent him through a portal to kick him out. But he felt an unexplainable weight to the situation and he didn't want to annoy her before he got an answer.

He noticed that her curtains were drawn back and sunlight flooded the room, contrasting with all the dark woods of her furniture. His eyes immediately flickered over to the candle and, as if on cue, a flame appeared.

"Hey, Rae. I've got a question," he started as he watched the flame dance.

Raven hummed in response, but didn't look up from the book she was reading or stop levitating.

Beast Boy nervously scratched the back of his head and continued, "I kinda noticed how this candle comes on whenever we're alone together…"

He shifted his gaze to her instead of the candle. Raven used her powers to flip the page of her book. She didn't even lift up her head to acknowledge him.

"...And I asked everyone else if, you know, it came on whenever they were alone with you…"

Which was the truth. Starfire had noticed the candle because of its shiny gold flecks, but said she had never seen it in use. Cyborg had said that he was never in Raven's room long enough to notice her stuff and then he teased Beast Boy for pestering Raven so much that he had noticed a random candle in her candle-filled room. Robin had simply said no and advised Beast Boy to talk to Raven if he thought the candle might in some way impact Raven or the team.

Beast Boy watched as Raven continued to silently read her book as if he weren't even in the room. He shifted from one foot to the other as he continued. "...And, uh, they all said no."

Raven flipped another page of her book.

"So, I guess I wanted to know if the candle," he kept his eyes on her, "meant anything?"

His ears twitched at the sound of Raven's voice, but she still kept her head down and covered by her cloak's hood.

"No," she said flatly.

"Um...are you sure? Cause it kinda feels like it's, um, responding to me?" He glanced at the candle as it continued to shine.

"No," she repeated.

He felt like he was on thin ice and at any minute he could be flung through a portal that led out of her room. But he took a deep breath to encourage himself to keep going. "And I know you've got like a lot of magic stuff that can mean things or whatever…So, does that candle mean something?" He gazed at her. "Something about us?"

Finally, something happened. Two things to be exact. One, Raven lost her balance slightly so that her levitating dropped a few inches. And two, Raven dropped her book. The hardcover thumped against the floor. Beast Boy quickly retrieved it and lifted it up towards her. She didn't reach for the book, but instead her eyes were on the candle.

"Not at all," she answered without looking at him.

"Are you sure?"

When she made eye contact, he felt like he had been the one lit on fire instead of the candle. Her eyes seemed to pierce through him and it made him feel pinned in place. His heart was beating faster than he ran whenever he morphed into a cheetah during missions. Sweat prickled against his forehead.

"Why's everything gotta be so intense with you," he murmured, not even meaning to say that out loud.

"I'm an intense person," she said above a whisper. "Forget about the candle."

"You know I won't," he replied honestly.

And for the second time, he obviously caught her off guard. Her intense gaze softened and she lost her levitating balance again. This time she gave up and floated her feet to the ground. She tugged on her hood even though it was already covering most of her face.

"It's just a candle," she lied.

Raven knew the candle was a soulmate candle that only lit up whenever two soulmates were alone in a room together. She glanced at the candle while the flame danced. She felt her face heat beneath her hood. Her eyes shifted back to Beast Boy, but he was still staring at the candle.

"But…"

She couldn't handle any more questions or his gaze, so she interrupted him with a distraction. "If you drop the discussion right now, I'll join movie night."

Beast Boy quickly turned to face her with a surprised and hopeful expression. "But you never join movie night when it's my turn to pick!"

"Do we have a deal?" She asked as she let go of her cloak and took back the discarded book from his hands.

Beast Boy thought over the situation. He knew there was more to the candle than Raven was sharing, but obviously he wasn't getting any answers tonight. He sighed. It was another mystery to add to the list of mysteries about Raven.

"Deal," he said as stuck out his hand for her to shake.

She rolled her eyes but reached out to shake his hand. When she made a motion to pull it back, he held on and stepped closer to her.

"But I'll figure it out one day."

He gave her a soft smile before letting go of her hand. He left her in the room, staring after him.
