More than fifteen minutes had passed since Beast Boy arrived at the on-campus coffee kiosk. There were a couple of drinks on the counter beneath the Pick-Up Line sign, but none of them were his. In fact, they looked long abandoned by the look of the wilted whipped cream peaks, dissolved ice, and steam-less cups.
"Hey, what's a guy gotta do to get some service around here," Beast Boy shouted over the counter.
All three coffee-shop workers on the other side of the counter looked at him with annoyed expressions. It was the first sign of acknowledgement he had received since arriving. One walked up to the counter as if he were going to help Beast Boy, but instead literally turned invisible. One shot some sort of laser from her eyes at the cup nearest the edge of the abandoned drinks. It started to bubble, causing Beast Boy to jump back slightly from the counter. She picked up the cup and removed the lid to let the steam flow out and then she walked away.
"Oh, so you get your drink?" Beast Boy called out as the girl opened a door and went to the back of the kiosk. He turned his attention to the last worker. The person was still making eye contact. "Hey, I ordered a…"
Before he could finish his sentence, the barista broke eye-contact to look down at their phone.
Beast boy's jaw dropped slightly. "Dude, seriously!"
From behind him he heard, "This is why I never do mobile orders."
Beast Boy recognized the monotone voice immediately. He nervously scratched the back of his head and chuckled as he turned around. "Oh, hey Rae."
Raven looked at him wordlessly for a moment. Her amethyst gaze made him feel like the warm drink that he wished he had. Raven was in his Civilian Safety class at the boarding school for superheroes that he went to.
"Don't call me Rae," she finally said before stepping around him and up to the counter.
"Oh yeah, cool cool," Beast Boy stammered.
Raven was one of the most interesting people in his class. She was the type of girl that was effortlessly cool and didn't care what anyone else thought about her. She was also one of the smartest people at the school. And she only ever hung out with Robin and Starfire, last year's prom king and queen. She was quiet and mysterious, which was the complete opposite of himself. Beast Boy was voted Most Likely to be Captured by A Villain for Talking Too Loud and he considered himself an open book. One thing that they did have in common, though, was that they both always stayed at the boarding school during holidays. He heard it was because her father was literally the devil or something.
"What did you order?" she asked.
Beast boy jumped slightly at the sound of her voice. He didn't expect her to talk to him. Normally whenever he tried to chat her up, she shut him down immediately. "Umm, a …" His mind went blank.
She waited for a few seconds before turning back to the counter. He watched as her magic enveloped different items where the baristas were supposed to make drinks. She used her powers to grab a coffee cup; squirt in hazelnut syrup and caramel syrup; pour in hot coffee and almond milk; and then top the entire drink off with vegan whipped cream. Once she was finished, she summoned the cup into her hands.
"Here," she said, holding the cup out to him.
"Thanks," Beast Boy said in a voice so soft that he didn't recognize it as his own. He gently took the cup. "Um, how did you know my drink order?"
"Lucky guess."
Beast Boy watched her grab a cup marked for tea from the counter. She gave him a blank look before stepping around him to walk away.
"Hi, I'm Beast Boy. We haven't officially met. But you're a total baddie. When we graduate and become real superheroes, I definitely want to be on your team," he whispered once she was a few feet away.
His heart nearly stopped when she looked over her shoulder.
"I'm Raven," she said and then turned and walked away.
