Tears fill Juki's eyes as she reads the letter that presented itself to her upon pulling it out. It held Lin's handwriting that had resembled chicken scratch.
Dear, Juki
I wrote this letter ahead of time because I knew that once I get bad off, that I wouldn't be able to write you this letter. I wrote this because you were the only one that had ever cared since I was imprisoned. For that I'm so thankful for, and you're a very brave woman. I know I don't deserve the love and generosity that you've given me. I deserve this death that awaits me, I have dreams of my wife a lot now. She's always by my bedside, but she's not there comforting me. She's injecting me with poison, and telling me that I deserve this pain and suffering. I always knew that I wouldn't get a peaceful or painless death. For the longest since those events I wouldn't let anyone inside, and get to know me. Truth is I've always been a coward, and have paid my way through the justice system. I can say I'm sorry a trillion times over and it still doesn't make up for what I've done, for the lives I've taken and the families I've destroyed. I should be dying in prison where I belong, not on my own couch in the slums. I've always been selfish, even as a doctor.
If I wasn't being paid, the truth is I wouldn't have been saving lives, but I wanted to be an inspiration for other people. I wanted to look good for other people, despite my wife telling me to not impress the world around me. Nobody cared except you in the end, since you may be wondering why I'm going to confide in you when I'm close to going, and that reason is because you look like a close friend of mine back in the day that had died due to my own stupidity. Everyone around me ends up dying or leaving me. You didn't leave, and that's why I'm going to leave you with a secret that you will only know about.
Everyone thought I had gone bankrupt, but the truth is I have 109 million yen(1 million dollars) in my savings account that I will give to you upon my death. You deserve it, I don't after what I have done. I don't know my supposed daughter, but I have resources to find her. I didn't want her to know about me while I was alive, only after my death do I want her to know about me. If you do find her, only she can determine if she likes me or despises me. She may not be by my blood but I still held love for her, no matter who she is today. It may be cruel to say but my wife was justified in hating her, but wrong at the same time for not giving her a chance. The information for the bank and resources are deeper in the envelope, as well as the letter to my daughter. I hope you make it big in life Juki, don't make the same mistakes I did, that's all I ask. Farewell my only friend. Once I die, I want you to turn your life around. Go get a job, an apartment, make something big, and be creative with it. I wish you only the best, get out of the slums.
Your dearest friend-Lin
Juki nearly drops the letter in shock, tears bursting forth from her eyes, while she covers her mouth with her hands to muffle the crying bursting forth from her lips. She couldn't believe he left her with the only things left tied to him. The man had suffered nearly throughout his life, yet he didn't spend a dime of his savings, for he felt he was deserve worthy of it. He could have started a business, been living a good life. But he spent his last breath in the slums of all places in an apartment that was hardly worth calling a place of residence. Yet he wanted her to get out of this place, but at the same time where would she go?
It was then a thought came across her mind, as she gazed down at the dark floor. 'My family. Will they accept me back after all these years? I haven't seen them or even talked to them for so long. I wonder if they're mad at me for running away.' She holds her head dropping both the letter and the envelope onto the floor. ' Please I need a guide. Anything will work. I'm lost on what to do.' She pleaded into her head. For the next few hours she sat on that floor crying her eyes out, pleading with anyone to help her. Juki lost her only tether to her world, he was gone. She knew she couldn't stay here in this apartment, the landlord would have been informed of the situation a long while ago, and it wouldn't be too soon for him to come knocking to check out the place. He would rent it out to anyone else that was suckered enough to pay the outrighteous prices for a roof over their head.
Juki then looks down at the envelope slowly reaching out to pick it back up. She held the letter to her chest, it was written by Lin's hands. It was something the woman would treasure for the rest of her days. A lump was felt in the envelope as she reopened the envelope to a slip of paper coming out the top. Flipping it over she reads the chicken scratch once more, it simply read:
Juki on the bottom of this envelope is exactly 1 million yen(10,000 dollars) wrapped up. Use it to get yourself cleaned up, and rent out a place. Somewhere far away from the slums, please. You have a chance to help yourself, you have your whole life ahead of you. Now go live it, and don't fret over me anymore.
-Lin
Happiness yet sadness flooded her chest at the note. After counting out the money she confirmed that the amount was exact in full. She would do as Lin wished of her, and she would make sure he got a proper burial over it too, it was the least she could do for him. Getting what she had, she stuffed the envelope in her coat, and headed out the slums for the last time.
*In a school district*
About 20 minutes from the slums in a small elementary setting stood many kids awaiting their parents, chattering excitedly about this or that. When a white Mercedes parked on the sidewalk of the place, and out came a woman with shoulder length black hair, and stood at almost 5'10 feet. Her skin was paleish, with sunglasses over her face to obscure anyone from seeing her eyes. She wore a knee high dress, with a dark coat that hung just as low, with dark heels that clacked against the cement. She walked up to one of the teachers adorning a smile on her face.
The elderly teacher looked up at the woman while fussing at the children to stay in that area. "Yes mam, how may I help you?"
The woman pulls off her glasses to show off her jaded eyes, a small smile playing on her lips. "Yes. I'm here to pick up one Nakaya Aiya."
The woman lifts up an eyebrow, "And who are you? Her mother usually comes to pick her up. I'm not meaning to come off as rude, but unless you have some proof the mother has given you permission to come pick her up, then I can't let you get off with the child."
The woman pulls out her phone, scrolling through the phone showing the woman the text messages. "My name is Tsukumo Emiko. I'm a long time friend of Aiya's mother. Her mother got called in for an emergency, and asked me if I would come pick up the child." She puts her hands together, "The girl knows me. I babysit her sometimes when I come for a visit."
The old woman gives her one last look before going to retrieve the child, and upon the girl setting her eyes on the woman she gets happy. Running up to the woman, hugging her legs, "Aunty Emiko! You came to visit!" The girl lets her go, hopping on the spot, gazing up at the woman. "Are we having a movie night tonight?"
The old woman taps on Aiya's shoulder. "So you do know this woman?"
Aiya nods, "Yeah this is my aunty. She's not actually my aunt, but she may as well be! I've known her since I was 3."
"Ok. You're ready to go. Have a safe trip home." The old woman lets the girl go with Emiko. If the girl knows the woman, then it won't hurt. Ever since the kidnappings of the kids recently, the schools have been more cautious about who picked up who. She waves at Aiya, "See you tomorrow! Don't forget to let your mother look at that school trip slip!" She yelled after the girls retreating form.
Once in the car Aiya watches her aunt turn on the car, and pull out of the parking lot. "So where are we going?" The girl asked jittery. The last time her aunt picked her up when she was 4, they went out to the fair without her mother's knowledge.
Emiko smiles, "I found this amazing ice cream shop about 5 miles from here. I know you're a huge fan of ice cream, so I thought you would enjoy it."
"Yeah that sounds really good." Aiya puts her fingers over her lips, a huge smile on her lips. "No telling mom. You know how she is with sugar."
Emiko puts her finger over her lips, a wide smirk on her lips. "You know me. It's our own little secret. She won't know a thing." Both of them laughed, just making small chats while on the way to the shop. When Emiko parks she tells the girl to stay there while she goes inside to get her a surprise ice cream just like the girl wanted. After about 15 minutes Emiko comes back out, going inside the car, and handing the girl a banana split with 1 scoop of three different flavors, different syrups, and coated in a sugary outside interior. She herself got a shake, something simple yet not too sweet.
"Oh my gosh! This is so good." The girl squeals out digging into her sugary concoction. "Thank you aunty!"
"You're welcome. I knew you would want the most sugary thing on the menu. They call that the wacky banana snacky. It fits you perfectly." Emiko said, setting down her shake after taking a few sips so she could drive. "I'll wait for you to finish it, and get cleaned before your mother sees this mess and has a cow that her baby had sugar."
"It's really awesome." The girl takes a breath trying to eat through it.
Emiko watches the girl eat her treat when she hears a loud knock on the driver's side window beside her. Turning she sees a man standing right beside her car, as she pushes the window down just a tad. "Yes. What do you need?"
"I'm going to need you to step out of the car mam, your back windshield is busted." The man spoke in a gruff tone, hiding his eyes behind a pair of dark sunglasses.
Emiko shook her head, "No it's not busted. It's perfectly intact." She raises an eyebrow trying to keep up a strong front. "Who are you anyways? A cop?"
Before she can blink the back glass busted into a thousand pieces, causing both occupants to scream out in terror. There was a second man that she hadn't noticed at first, while the first one busted the glass in the driver's side seat, showering both her and the child in glass shards. The car door was yanked open, before her shoulders were grabbed, and she too was yanked out of the car with so much force it almost gave her whiplash. She could hear Aiya screaming on the other side where she too was grabbed by the second occupant.
Emiko tried kicking and biting her assailant before a third came around knocking her out with the end of a barrel of a gun, stunning her. She only heard bits and pieces after that. Waking up in a moving semi-dark vehicle, her hands tied behind her back, and her feet bound. The surface she was sitting on would bump every few minutes like the vehicle was speeding and swerving to get away. Opening her eyes she spots Aiya on the floor, her hands and feet bound together just like her own. The girl's eyes are blown wide open, terror shining through her chocolate orbs. The girl's mouth was gagged so she could only let out muffled cries, but Emiko noticed that there was slightly dry blood near her right eye. The monsters had hit the little girl, but Emiko looked around the van looking for anything that could get her out of her situation.
She spotted the first two men up farther in the van, as she stopped her wiggling when she saw the third one from before sitting down looking down at them, a bat in his hands, along with the gun from before sitting beside him. "You're awake. It's about goddamn time. Didn't know bitches slept so long." He takes out a cigarette, lighting it. "If you try to escape we'll have to kill ya both. The boss wants you both alive. The girl more than you though, but beggars can't be choosers now can we?"
"What do you want with us? Why take us?" Emiko asked him shakily, near bursting into tears.
"Cherry Bomb wasn't fast enough to take the kid, but it worked in our favor. You'll be suspected of kidnapping the child." He told her in a gruff tone, as he took a drag only to gaze back down, a sinister face staring back at her. "Of course after we take care of your memories. The boss could care less if you're alive, but you'd just be a bonus if you behaved like a good little dog. You would be taking the fall for this one."
Emiko remembered hearing about some mysterious woman taking kids recently, it was a woman every single time. Cherry Bomb was an obvious nickname for this woman, they would never use her real name. Emiko looked at the Aiya, "Why are you taking the kids? What have they ever done to you people? Are you selling them on the blackmarket? You sick fucks."
The man just laughs as he bangs on the metal opening to the driving side. "Ya hear this? This bitch thinks we'll give her the answers." The other men laugh at the statement before the third looks back at her, "You're not in control of this situation, so you're not in any position to be demanding anything out of us. You won't get a shred of any answer, you'll just have to see what the boss has planned for you two." He took another drag, blowing out the smoke lazily, "It won't take too much longer, we've been on the road for 6 hours now. Hope you enjoy our wonderful hospitality." The man said in the most humble yet sarcastic voice.
Before she could ask, the van stopped with one of the men telling the others that they were at the site. The men get out, not even a minute later the doors open shining sunlight into the darkness.
*Back in Yokohama*
Atsushi was sitting at the kitchen table watching Akutagawa make some dinner for the two of them. Not even 5 hours ago he had eventually spilled the beans about everything to his boyfriend. Surprisingly the other didn't get angry with him, but he was angry at the person that has been harassing his significant other. The two had talked it out, and they would roll around the punches, and share the blows from whatever came towards the future. The TV was playing in the background when Atsushi heard something about an incident that happened some 5, 6 hours ago, and decided to turn up the volume to listen in on what happened. On the screen was a reporter as two pictures were brought up on the screen beside her.
"On other news, at 4:14 this afternoon a white Mercedes was found outside the parking lot of Kimi's Ice Cream Parlour today. The fire crew managed to put out the flames fairly quickly. The police ran the license plates and discovered that the car belongs to 32 year old Tsukumo Emiko. According to witnesses, the woman had picked up the daughter of Nakaya Hinata. Whom was scheduled to pick up her daughter, but was called out for an emergency earlier in the day. Hinata consulted with her long time friend Emiko to go pick up her daughter after school had ended. Emiko picked up the daughter, 7 year old Nakaya Aiya. After picking the girl up from school she proceeded to take the girl to Kimi's Ice Cream Parlour for some ice cream according to the workers inside the building at the time. While sitting in the car, she was approached by 3 men, who proceeded to break the back window and the driver's side window out, violently pulled both Emiko and Aiya from the car. The footage proceeded to show the men knocking out the two girls before shoving them in a vehicle that was just out of the screenshot, and driving off." The woman sat professionally, "Unfortunately no one has been able to identify these men." A picture of the three men and the footage plays on the TV, "If you have any information on these three men, contact the station or the police."
The man beside her speaks up, "There are many people that believe that this case is connected to the missing kids. It's been told by the mother Hinata, that her daughter did have an ability, but it was a non-combative type. She has expressed her shock and anguish during this time in the case, and has asked if anyone has any information to contact the local authorities. Please help bring both Emiko and Aiya home. Please have a heart, and return two loving people back to her world. Let them come home." He clears his throat, "If anyone has a child that is an ability user, the police have informed the public to be careful who picks up your child, and where your child goes in these very dangerous times. The police have put up a curfew for anyone under 18 years of age to be roaming the streets. 9pm in the max curfew for anyone under 18. Please keep your children safe, and make sure you can trust who picks up your child, and who has your child at any time." He turns to the woman, another article popping up on the screen. "Another…."
Atsushi turns to Aku who had been watching the TV too, he has an unreadable expression on his own face. "That's horrible. Do you think it has to do with the missing kids?" Atsushi asked quietly.
"It could be. In this case there was no woman that abducted the child. The child knew the woman, and three men attacked both, kidnapping both. It's a hard one. Why kidnap the woman is the question." Akutagawa questioned.
"That is true. Maybe they took her to because she would have been a witness. Though why did a woman not kidnap the girl this time around? Wouldn't it have been easier? If not, why make a scene, and have the public grow tighter?" Atsushi questioned back, his hand on his chin in thought. "Should we inform Dazai-san about this?"
"I don't know but I'm sure he already knows about this by now. It doesn't take long for that man to know what needs to be known." Akutagawa says bringing out two teacups and a teapot, setting both on the surface of the island.
"I guess you're right." A sigh escapes his lips, "I just feel so useless. All these kids are disappearing, and people are being murdered. I feel like it's my fault for not finding out who's behind this. I feel like I have to apologize a thousand times over to the families to try to get some form of justice." He raises his head, "We're no closer to figuring out this case than we did in the beginning."
Akutagawa sits on the other side of the island, sipping his tea, pushing another cup Atsushi's way. "Now don't think like that. It's not your fault that all this is happening, it's whoever is behind this situation, fault. We'll find out who's behind this, and we'll make sure they ever set foot in Yokohama."
Atsushi nods, wiping some tears from his eyes. "Yeah we will."
Later on that night a woman was walking through the streets when a car stopped beside her, and a young man stuck his head out the window. "Are you ok mam? Do you need any help?"
The woman turned to him with a look of confusion on her face. "Yeah. Can you give me a ride to Nakaya Hinata's house? I'm visiting her from Tokyo."
The man paused, giving her one more look before his eyes got wide with shock. "Wait. Is your name Tsukumo Emiko?"
The woman raises her eyebrow, "Yeah…" She steps back, "How do you know my name? Are you a friend or family member of Hinata's I've never heard about?"
The man shakes his head, "No. You're all over the news. Have you seriously not been watching the news?"
She pointed at herself in shock. "I'm all over the news?! What did I do? This is the first time I've been here since a year ago. I'm here to surprise visit Aiya, my friend's daughter, for her upcoming birthday."
The man motions to the car. "Get in and I'll let you listen to what's going on. After that I'll drop you off at a police station so things can be settled out. Agreed?"
Emiko nods, getting into the car while the man turns on the radio. It was covering the story once more so late in the night. The horror gains on her face while she looks at the man. "How is that possible? I just got here. I had to take a bus because my car was stolen a few days ago." She crumples into herself, "Aiya she's gone. Oh my god I can't believe this!"
"I'll take you to the police station, and we'll figure this out, ok?" The man told her to pat her on the back.
She nods crying, tears streaming down her face. "Anything to get Aiya back! Oh my god I can't believe this!"
The man doesn't know what to do while he gets back on the road back to Yokohama, confused about what was happening at that moment.
