That's What Friends Are For

"That has got to be, without a doubt, the strangest movie I've ever seen," Kairi said, as she and Selphie spilled out of the movie theater together and headed towards Kairi car, dodging other moviegoers, bright lights from cars and restaurants nearby, and stray popcorn that had fallen down here and there as they did so.

And after Kairi had said the words "without a doubt", she almost wished she could take them back, because they almost made it sound like what she had just witnessed was somehow whimsical… but "Tusk" was anything but. It was just plain bizarre and horrifying.

"Here, here," Selphie said, swiftly grabbing Kairi's arm, and pulling her back from a car speeding by that would have drenched her with mud puddle water, had Selphie not acted quickly enough.

Selphie really did have sharp skills, Kairi thought now—trying to think of anything but the film, that was apparently based on a true story, that she had just witnessed—and she promised herself that one day she was going to pull her into this saving the world business too, if she wanted. Tidus, Wakka, and Irvine, as well.

"There's a reason I was hiding behind you for most of it," Selphie continued on, just as the two finally made their way to Kairi's purple slug-bug and climbed inside. "But you actually did a good job of staying strong throughout the whole movie, Kairi. Look at you go! I bet the next time there's a Keyblade War, or whatever, you won't freeze in fear like you did in your first fight, and will slay the dragon or whatever!"

Kairi smiled widely at that, and leaned across her seat to kiss Selphie on the cheek for that. Because Selphie, perhaps better than anyone else, knew how ashamed Kairi felt for how she had acted that day, because she had confided in her when she thought that no one else would understand. So, Kairi really appreciated the vote of confidence from Selphie here.

And Selphie was really spoiling her for her birthday today—when Sora, Riku, and Irvine had all gotten a bad case of the flu, and Tidus and Wakka both had an audition for the blitzball team of their dreams and hadn't been able to make it—by taking her out to the movies (even if it had been a dumb one, but that had been Kairi's bad) and even helping her to pay for this beauty of a car!

"Thank you so much, Selph! I can't thank you enough for today!" Kairi told Selphie, as she handed her a thank you card for everything she had done… that also had a note in there for her that told Selphie that she should propose to Irvine—because he would want her to—even if they'd learned that romance somehow made his strange summoning ability weaken. But clearly, that boy who had had a crush on Selphie for ages appreciated Selphie much more than being able to call strange beasts with one-hundred percent accuracy. And Kairi wanted Selphie to know that.

"What are friends for?" Selphie beamed at Kairi, just as she began opening the card, seeming every bit the eager beaver herself.

And thinking that this probably was one of the best birthdays ever, all things considered, Kairi decided to make it even better, by delicately pulling out of the parking spot they were currently in, and driving to one of the nicer restaurants in town, so they could have a nice steak dinner together, on her.

It was the least she could do, after all, when Selphie had gone as far as to help her buy a freakin' car for her birthday!

Life really was great.

Author's Note: So, I literally wrote this at five o'clock in the morning and only edited it once. So any weirdness that might be here is because of those things.

But I headcanon that Kairi's birthday is September 17th, so I wanted to write something for her for it (even though this is late). And I wanted it to NOT have to do with Sora and Riku (as much as I love them), because Kairi has a life outside of them, so have a Kairi and Selphie friendship piece.

Yes, "Tusk" is a real movie and based on a real story, I guess. You can look it up, if you want to. Or not. Whatever floats your boat. I know about it, because a co-worker told me about it (he watched it around Halloween last year, I think), saying it was the most messed up movie ever. I didn't watch it, but I Googled it because I was curious, and I can definitely understand why he would say that.

Originally, I think I was going to have them talk about that movie more. But I can't say that I'm sad they didn't.

Anyway, goodnight, all.
