BANG!
"What the heck..?" the noise woke him from his nap, startling him.
Rubbing his eye and cursing under his breath, he looked around the place, searching, until he found the source of the sound. Harry Potter, the Boy-Who-Lived, was lying on the ground wrapped still with the blanket and was staring at him in terror, his body shaking like a rocket.
Oh, the kid woke up much earlier than he expected.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa hey! Hey! Relax kid," the entity floated gently, yet close to the ground while raising his hands in surrender. "I'm not going to hurt you"
"Y-You are.." Harry whispered, clinging to his blanket, "..a flying dorito.."
"Flying dorito. Hahaha! That's a good one-! Wait.. can you see me? Like.. see me, see me!?"
The boy just nodded, not trusting his voice without taking his eyes off the stranger in his cupboard. How had he got here? Did someone else knows about him? About being here at all?
Harry couldn't help but gasp at the thought of Mr. Dorito telling the police about his life condition. Uncle Vernon had made it clear that they would treat Harry badly and send him straight to an orphanage where he would be mistreated worse than here. Where he truly belonged.
He didn't want to feel more pain.
The entity kept watching as the child lose himself in his own thoughts. He could guess how far his imagination was going. And as if he had been exposed, Harry looked at him again with terror and...
Damn, the shakings returned.
"Oh! No no no kid! Everything is fine!" he exclaimed altered, surprised by his own nerviousness. "It's just ... I wasn't expecting to find someone who could actually see me in the Real Realm and not in the Mindscape"
'As they usually do..' his mind finished the sentences.
"Mind.. scape?"
"That's right! That's where I came from!" and making his cane appear, he continued. "The fact that you can see me in the real world is sign that you have a great power within you. Very surprising considering that you're only a child"
"Power? Like.. m-magic?"
"Mmm ... if you see it that way... Then yes! You are a wizard, kid!"
"B-But magic doesn't exist," Harry said to himself, not noticing the change in the air or the squinting from his eye. "U-Uncle V-Vernon says that m-m-magic is only for freaks.."
The beast only looked at the kid, clearly taken aback by his words. A wizard thinking of not being a wizard? That's a new thing to think about. And that thought was so.. so.. worrisome.
"A freak.." without realizing it, his body slowly changed from a bright yellow to black, his eye wide open, now red, looking at Harry. "Do those things call you a freak?"
As it's happened before, the house began to shake, the entity trying to control again that unknown rage that was eating him away. Rage that disappeared when seeing the fear in the emeralds of the infant, returning him to his naturalness in seconds. Coughing uncomfortably, he adjusted his bowtie.
"Let's do something kid," he started. "Let's put aside everything your family told you and listen to me, okay?" seeing him nod with curious, he continued. "It's obvious that your family hates you for something that has to do with you. What exactly? I have no idea and I plan to find out! But what you have to know is that magic exists and I, my dear boy, am proof of it"
And to show his point he snapped his fingers and the food from before appeared on a small table in front of Harry, making him open his eyes in disbelief. That.. was magic? Magic was real?
"Wow .. I really used my last reserves.. Oouh, my shape hurts.. I need to sit down.. Ugh.. give me a second," Harry watched him fly past him and sit on the cushion, legs crossed and his cane spinning gracefully beside him. "But you see it now? Magic exists in many forms and sizes. It's just knowing how to find it. And you, kid, are a wizard by blood"
"I.." Harry doesn't know what to say. Him? Magical? That's all the things that Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia said to him that it wasn't real so.. did they lie to him? Or this triangular person is lying? Who to believe? He was so confused.
The dream demon looked at the little human in the floor, fighting with his thoughts for the second time. Sighing, he hit his cane to the wooden floor, bringing the kid's attention to him again.
"You should eat," he said, pointing at the plate. "You're so thin that you would break with the touch of a fly. Eat first and ask questions later"
Harry took small bites from the strange food on his plate, which seemed to be an assortment of things that he couldn't identify bathed in cheese, demanding to be eaten without considering anything around him. The food was certainly delicious, better than the leftovers his family gave him. Still, Harry couldn't help but feel uncomfortable with the presence of the triangle being beside him.
The stranger kept an eye on him, never appearing to blink. His hat floated comically on top of one of his points and the cane had remained still under his hands, leaning on it and having a better view of him where he sat.
Harry retain his head down, it wasn't good to stare, he could get upset and hit him with that cane. Was that why he had it near him? But he had been so kind to him by giving him food and a blanket. Could it be that he is faking it like Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia do when they're around people?
Harry stuck his fork into the food and continued to eat, tasting the mixture of flavors in his mouth.
'What is this called?' Harry thought taking another bite.
"Tartiflette"
The entity's voice surprised Harry, almost knocking his fork down the plate.
"H-Huh?"
"The dish is called Tartiflette," he said with his eye gleaming, still watching Harry's confused face. "It's a French meal of Savoyard," and pointing his cane, he continued. "It's made up of cooked potatoes, bacon, onion, pepper and crème fraîche. A good start for that palate of yours, kid. Don't forget to try the tea, it's one of my favorites"
Now looking at the cup next to the plate, Harry took it in trembling hands, feeling the heat go through his cold hands and take a small sip, tasting the sweet taste it have. Taking other sips, these being now long ones, the boy continued eating while the triangle creature closed his eye, waiting for him to finish.
"Why..?"
"Mmh?"
"Why ... are you nice to me?" Harry asked without looking up, gently setting the silverware on the empty plate. He was still hungry, but he didn't want to risk making the stranger angry by asking for more food.
"Why shouldn't I?" countered the beast, leaving the boy surprised.
"B-Because I'm a freak.." Harry replied in a thin voice.
"No, you're not," making his cane disappear, he floated slowly over Harry, coming close to his paled face, his big eye reflecting the expression of the mortal in front of him. "You want to know why I am nice with you?" Harry nodded. "It's simple, kid. Nobody deserves to be mistreated this way. You are as normal to me as the rest of the humans. But if you want to know my opinion, I think your family is the freak one here"
"I mean, look at those hideous faces they have!" he exclaimed. "I have never seen humans like those in my entire existence. Even the ones from the other planets are good looking unlike those people! And we're talking about millions of planets on the galaxy! Seriously, what the heck!?"
Harry was still looking at him, now with a hopeful glow on his eyes. There was someone who didn't think of him as a freak! He felt the tears come but he didn't let them fall, he was afraid that if he cried the stranger would change his mind and would leave, leaving him alone in the cupboard.
"Ugh! What do you guys want now!?" the yell of the entity being scared Harry, watching him fly up high a little and rub his temples. "I'm talking with the kid. Go away!"
Harry watched as his eye closed and groan in pain, worried. What was happening to him? Was he alright? Was... he hurting because of him? The boy looked down, feeling the tears return, but this time not like before. Should he... should he tell him that he could leave? He was going to come up with that idea when the gasp came back, not in pain but in shock.
"Oh, by the Isosceles, how could've I never thought of it!?" the flying triangle hit his face, growling silently before glaring at the kid again. "Hey kid! Whoa-ho, why the long face? Are you still hungry? Oh!" his eye widened, noticing Harry's teary eyes. "Oh man, did I scare you? Sorry about that, I have annoying voices that likes to annoy me when they feel like it"
Harry's sadness melted away at this. He was fine! It wasn't his weirdness! The boy nodded with a small weight released from his shoulders. The entity, instead, began to emphasize the idea in his head before rising into the air, excited.
"But let's not talk about them or they'll yell at me again. The most important thing is that the best idea of all has just occurred to me! I'm sure you'll love it," and seeing the curiosity reflected in his eyes, he laughed. "Let's go to my home!"
Harry was stunned, not believing his hearing. "To.. your home?"
"That's right!" Harry watched him spin in the air. "There we can do what we want! You and me. We can play chess games, read a few volumes from my collection. Or.. we could even watch movies! You like movies, don't ya?"
"B-But ... how will we get there?"
"You don't have to move, kid We will go right now!" he exclaimed, raising his arms and confetti appeared in the air, only to stop as considering something. "Nothing will happen to you, but I'll recommend you being on the cushion"
"What do you mea-"
*Snap*
THUMP!
Blackness.
That was all Harry could see around him. There was not a sound, listening only to his desperate breathing. Where was he? What was this place!?
"We're here" came a voice, echoing where he was standing. "You can open your eyes!"
'Open.. my eyes?'
Harry slowly raised his eyelids, meeting the entity's gaze in front of him in a large gray-painted space. Lots of things lay strewn on the floor. Books, pieces of paper, letters and other objects were on a red carpet that he had. The place was a complete disaster.
"Welcome to the Mindscape kid! Sorry for the mess, but I haven't brought anyone here in years," he said, flying past him, eyeing the mess.
Harry walked over to see a sky blue piece on the floor and taking it carefully he rotated it, curious. He had the King in his hand.
"Wait! I'll fix it"
Clapping his hands, the scattered things began to rise and move all over the place. Books being placed in the bookcases alphabetically, blueprints falling into a barrel with other heap of papers, blackboards and markers reduced in size and kept in a wooden box and then disappear to who knows where. The piece in his hand shot out to join a few more of the same shape, followed by pawns, horses, towers, and bishops that stood on top of a blue square board on a wooden table.
And after a minute, everything was in order.
"Tadah! Good as new! We won't want a messy place to hang out, right!?" the entity stopped and laughed to himself. "And where are my manners? Sit down! Make yourself comfortable!"
Harry sat on a reddish couch with gold accents that appeared out of nowhere, unable to help but run his hands through it. It was so smooth.
"Do you like it? It's of the best quality you will find in the world. In addition to being an Antique Norman style, they are very comfortable" he said, still being in the air. "What do you think of my place, kid? Cool, isn't it?"
"It's.. it's great.." Harry confessed with a shy smile.
"I know, right!? And you haven't seen anything yet! Like I said, you can do whatever you want here!"
And taking off his hat, the place turned to the side, causing Harry, who was still sitting in the comfortable couch, fell off scream, only to be received straight on the face by a pair of purple cushions, saving him from the fall.
"Whoops! I forget that you can't float .. But hey, I caught you! That's what it counts, right?"
Harry looked up from the cushion and saw the triangle being - who had now approached where he was - and, with bright eyes, he laughed. These were not forced or bitter. Rather, these were true ones, a purity of innocence that rejuvenated the child's almost destroyed soul.
"Yeah," he continued to laugh, sitting down on the soft cushion. "Yeah, you caught me!"
He accompanied Harry with his laughter, his body shining more than usual. He had removed Harry's own shell, now it was his turn to keep the kid out of it.
Having an idea, he snapped his fingers and the place blackened, leaving only the two of them in the void and making the child gasp, not knowing what was happening until little lights appeared around him, some passing quickly by their sides, shinning beautifully into the darkness.
Harry gazed beyond him, taking a look at everything around him.
Right at the wonders of the galaxy.
Delighted, he looked at each star that showed him, raising his hands in bright emeralds to reach the shower of shooting stars above them. Everything under the curious gaze from the immortal being at his side.
'Well, this seems familiar' he thought with his arms behind his back, accompanying him in the view of the universe.
It had been so long since he had seen the cosmos as it was before the creation of the planets, just one more memory of others. But this was the first time, apart from himself, that the boy contemplated how stunning the infinity of the galaxy was. How much it could offer him by looking at it. And seeing him with that passion, with that intensity of what he had once had was.. satisfying. Like he was seeing himself from the past but with another skin.
The voices whispered in soft tones and he unconsciously snapped his fingers, changing the scene around them once again.
Green was the next thing Harry saw, and the illusion of the gentle wind further messed up his black hair. The boy was now looking at the first vegetation on Earth, also being his first time to see the very beginning of his world.
Plucking a few petals from the flowers, the entity gathered them with both hands and launched them, a bunch of colorful butterflies appear flying through the skies and Harry, more excited than before, tried in vain to follow them. The being kept looking at the kid running around in the long grass, entertaining. He had to admit that seeing him scamper was funny, trying to jump and catch one of his butterflies and failing. Ahh.. childish purity. So amusing!
His relaxed expression changed to a frown, in thoughts.
The demon always expected some other information to be collected after giving his knowledge to people. But he could feel that with Harry was different.
It was the first time he had shared anything with a child rather than an adult. The boy clearly had nothing to offer him, there was nothing that he could give him more than giggles and expressions of happiness and innocence. However, he had shown him two memories that it would envy the many scientists and historians who for years have tried to discover the all, without success.
And the most surprising thing? He expected nothing in return!
Then he thought, still keeping his gaze on the slim boy, that coming to the Mindscape had been a great idea after all.
The fun ended when Harry stumbled and fell down at the river from a waterfall, being lifted up -now with a soaked shirt- to change the scene. He showed him the formation of the volcanoes, the Dinosaurs and their destruction, the appearance of the primitive man, the shaking of the earth, the separation Pangaea and the formation of the continents, the evolution and, finally, the true utility of the pillows.
The latter was rather an accident on Harry's part, because while the triangular entity explained to him about the differences of some magical plants, the boy innocently wished he could lean on something soft, and a pillow appeared in his hands soon after. For an instant he didn't believe it and, to test if it was real...
He ended up throwing it at him.
Straight on the face.
The immortal entity held the pillow with both hands, eye open and small pupil, then glared the surprised Harry and, with a snap, more white pillows rained down, the boy being hit by the same one that he threw at him. The pillow fight was going well until he formed what looked like a pillow tank -made of pillows- and attacked the boy without mercy, buried him alive within seconds.
Obviously he pulled him out of there only to lash out at him with the pillows again, giggling wildly with Harry. After that they both lay on top of them, looking once more at the sea of the cosmos, now being present the different planets that the entity proudly named.
"And that one over there is the planet 14DP5OVH19 kid. One of the strangest I have ever discovered!"
"Why?"
"Well it's... complicated... I haven't been there for a visit since... five million years? I don't know. I wonder how they were doing now.."
"And why don't you go to see them?"
He sighed and lifted himself, sitting cross-legged. Harry followed fearfully, thinking that he had angered him.
"You're born with a curious mind kid," he said without losing that happy tone, despite having his tired eye on him. "That's good.. Very good"
"I'm sorry.."
"Now now, why are you apologizing? You didn't do anything wrong," he said, beginning to float gently, a little above Harry. "I'm used to being asked whatever, so don't worry about me getting mad or stuff, okay?"
Harry winced but nodded anyway. He didn't believe that the entity knew of his concerns. However, the fact that he knew and was still kind to him filled him with a warmth in his chest. Harry was so grateful to him that he didn't feel the big smile on his face and being noticed by his all-seeing eye.
"Doesn't it bother you.. that I ask you questions?"
"Of course not! I love being asked!" he exclaimed cheerfully, raising his arms. "Tell me, how do you think the human being could create the electric light or the cars or the television? And what about the phone or the oven? Or something as simple as the pillow? Everything you know was thanks to me! ..although of course, they were the ones that applied it.." he said to himself the last part in a whisper, but Harry still heard him.
"Has anyone thanked you?"
The demon opened his eye on hearing that innocent question, dumbfounded.
"P-Pardon?"
"Someone must had thanked you at some point. I mean, you helped them create all of those things, right? They should have, because if it weren't for you they wouldn't have been recognized," Harry said, not realizing how strong his words were or their impact it had. Much less to notice the afflicted and confused look of the entity. "At least they should mention you somewhere, don't you think?"
The one-eyed entity was aware of many things. Hell, he was an entity that knew everything! But hearing those words was like receiving a big slap in his entire figure. How is it that he had noticed that now? After spending trillion years collecting, giving knowledge, his advice, his help. Has anyone ever thanked him? Did he even saw any reference of it? Sure, he saw his triangular shape on a dollar once. Or that weird cult that they made with his form years ago.
But there was nothing more than those things..
"Oh, I almost forgot!" Harry's voice brought him back as he shyly scrubbed his hair, his eyes nervously glaring at him and a smile stood on his flushed face. "T-Th-Thank you so much f-for made my birthday the best day of all!"
The warm feeling surrounded his body in a mixture of positive emotions, changing him to a light pink color. He was being thanked by a human child! Oooh, it felt somehow good, the honesty with which he had said it tripled his color. Was it possible to explode with so many emotions running through his mind!? Probably.
However, one word in particular didn't go unnoticed. He looked at the child with his yellow hue, incredulous.
"Today was... your birthday?"
"...yes" he whispered, mentally hitting himself by that slip. "I'm five years old now.."
'Five..' he thought in amazement and in shock. 'But he looks like a three old kid! '
He could not avoid the tumult of facts coming on his mind, some symbols forming in his eye as he went from one solution to another.
Malnutrition, broken bones, and lack of exercise stood the most. The bones would no longer be a problem unless his fat, ugly uncle came up with a hand on it. If that were the case they would take some time to amend, but they would. They could do some exercise at night by silencing the room, expanding the room, a few potions and his own power could make him gain some leg strength.
But without a diet to help him... that would bring problems in returning him to his proper size.
It would be difficult to manage the malnutrition at the current size of the child's stomach. Who knows how long they have left him without food during those years. However he would, he would make sure of it. With breakfast and dinner, he would have no problem since they would likely left him locked in the cupboard. But how would he keep the family away when it was lunchtime? They treat him as a slave! Maybe if he helped... if he helped, the kid could have more time for lunch.
That all would cost him much energy, but it would be worth it.
And maybe he could even alter their minds so they wouldn't bother him while gardening and-
The entity slapped himself mentally remembering that Harry was still in front of him, expectant.
"Five, huh? Well well well, what a coincidence of life. We must celebrate!"
"Celebrate?"
"That's right, after all it's the day you were born. So ask me what you want! With a snap of my fingers I can make your dreams come true"
"But won't you be... weak again?"
"In the Mindscape my powers are out of limits kid, don't worry. Maybe I'll be tired after I come back to the real world.. But that's not problem at all! Now, name me what you want most and I'll grant it for you in a second!"
Harry looked around as if searching for something, his mind turning away for a moment. Dudley could take advantage of the entity by demanding him everything he desire, new toys, new clothes, money, everything.
But he was not Dudley. He was just Harry, a boy hated by his family, a child who didn't want things he already had. Sure, except for one thing.
Looking up, green eyes met the slim pupil of the triangular entity.
"I think ... I have something," said Harry doubtfully.
"Really? Great! And what is it?"
The look of little Harry surprised him. There was so much hope and doubt that they made his eyes shine like true emeralds. They were the same eyes he had seen that time in the past.
"A friend," he confessed. "I al-always dreamed of having someone to be my friend. Dudley and his friends don't let anyone get close to me at school. You are... the first person I talk to and... unless... you don't want to grant it... t-that's fine, after all I'm just a freak, and freaks don't get gifts..."
The triangular entity only stared at him in a heavy silence, analyzing his words. He had done miracles to greedy people in the past. Fame, wealth, power, health, a soul mate and other things in exchange for his own whims. However, they had never asked him for something as innocent as having a friend. Was it so difficult to even have one?
For this boy it was.
And while it was impossible to believe it, both he and Harry Potter had something in common. Both suffered from a great emptiness that ate them inside, he to fill that something within his monotonous existence and Harry to have someone who can value him as he is. Not as an freak or useless but as the loving child he really was, just Harry.
And this is why the whispers brought him here, he realized.
He had thought that nothing in the universe would surprise him anymore, that everything he had enjoyed in those years would be only a single memory in history. Until now.
Harry was still looking at him with that hopeful glow but with a shadow passing through them in contained fear, and he couldn't blame him, he had never been able to have anything that was chores and hatred from his own family. And now that he had someone who was kind to him for the first time and offered him a gift, it was too much for the poor orphan boy to want a friend who would give him the love he deserved.
But.. Could he give him something like that?
'Unless...' a wild idea came to him in a flash, opening his eye.
Seeing all the possibilities and their cons, he made his decision.
"You know what kid? I really like you," and staying at the same height as the boy, he continued. "Of all the things you could have asked me you chose the most pure choice of all. And that's why I will fulfill your wish. In fact, your wait is finally over! Tell me, would you like to be my first human friend?"
Apparently those were the words he needed. The doubt was erased from him and a slight blush formed on his cheeks. A huge smile adorned his face and his eyes shone as if they had been polished like true gemstones. That face was totally priceless.
"Y-yes please!"
"Alright then!" his eye twinkled, offering him his hand. "Let's be the best friends the universe has ever seen!"
Harry, on impulse, took his little hand with a smile of pure happiness. A happiness that made them feel complete for the first time.
Yes, he thought as he watched the boy's tears fall and he was trying to wipe them away with his arm, he had made the right decision.
Blue flames appeared over their hands, surprising them both. The body of the triangle being began to shine like a star, illuminating the Mindscape and blinding Harry. Several characters passed through the entity's eye, leaving him indisposed to see what was happening. The fire soon transformed into chains that wrapped their arms in a strong grip and then merged into their skins.
Harry's back started to hurt causing him to exclaim and run his free hand through the clothing, trying to ease the sensation of burn. As soon as the pain came, it dissipated along with the yellow glow of the dream demon, bringing everything back to normal.
"Wow .. this has never happened to me before," the beast said looking at his hand and then focusing on Harry. "You're okay?"
"I think so... how about you?"
"Nah, don't worry. I am a being of pure energy. It would be very hard get hurt by anything… or so the voices told me," he said, ruffling his black hair, an action he has seen other humans do for generations and now he could do it too. "But let's put that aside. Now let's celebrate! A birthday party is nothing without a cake! Let's go!"
And without having time to ask, the entity snapped his fingers and levitated Harry on his side, taking him by the shoulders and they flew together in the depth of the Mindscape. The voice of the being and their laughter being the only things hearing from the place.
Starting now their new and strange way of friendship.
