CHAPTER 1: ANCIENT DUCT

"Took ya long enough," Rod commented, rolling his eyes. He held the door to the cellar open, although he was still looking out past the arrivals, in case they'd been followed.

"You knew the time and place," Sanfred pointed out, leaning against the door to help prop it open. He was carrying Mine over his shoulder, while she moaned angrily, although a piece of duct tape was over her mouth to keep her silent. Her arms and wrists were bound as well.

"You sure no one else saw you come here? You could easily have fucked up along the way."

"Of course, I was seen," Sanfred shared without hesitation. "But they don't know which way I came."

"Well…" Rod looked the captive over, wondering what to make of everything. This had been their plan… only now he was just realizing what it entailed. "Wait, so now… we have to keep her here?"

"Yup," Sanfred replied cheerfully, making his way into the chamber. A large chair was set up by the corner of the room, and he plopped Mine down on it, while she glared up at him defiantly. "I guess, close the door and we can get to work."

"Already? Tonight?"

Even Sanfred shrugged, despite being usually eager to work. "Perhaps we could take a night off to rest first."

Relieved to hear it, Rod sealed the cellar door shut, making sure it was fully closed, to avoid any chance of being discovered by people searching from the outside. With that taken care of, Rod made his way inside, searching for the flagon of wine he had procured from his scavenging earlier in the day. Fortunately, he'd remembered to keep it in the bucket of ice, so the wine was cool, even after a hot day. He took a nice swig.

Sanfred was wearing a loose black cloak, with tail-ends from the sleeves that whipped up from the wind as he traveled. It looked patchy, perhaps like he was from poverty. Despite his garbs, he had neatly combed short dark brown hair and a thin mustache. "All right, little lady," he said in a low voice, as if he was still concerned about being overheard from outside. "Looks like we're here in this place, nice and cozy. Maybe I'll take the Ancient Duct Tape off your mouth."

Upon hearing it, Mine's eyes widened, and she was releasing muffled sounds from under the tape, as if she were clearly eager to be rid of the vocal obstructor.

However, Sanfred looked concerned. "Well, if you're just gonna scream and shout, I'll just leave the damned thing on."

In a flash, Mine froze, her eyes switching over to those of sadness.

"You won't get me with those sad-girl eyes either," Sanfred pointed out.

Next, Mine glared at him, although silently. She was tired of the games by now.

Fortunately, Sanfred didn't prolong things. He reached for the tape and delivered a quick tug motion, removing the strip in one swipe.

It was a painful one for Mine, but she gritted her teeth and endured it, simply glad to be able to breathe through her mouth again. "That hurt, you know," she muttered.

"Sorry," Sanfred said with a shrug. "It's not like I wanted to hurt you or anything. It was just necessary."

She tried to lean forward in her chair, but as soon as she did, her captor postured up, asserting his presence right away, warning her to remain put. "This is worse than that!" she said loudly. "Why did you kidnap me?"

"It's not kidnapping. It's capturing."

Mine's eyes squinted. "What are you… what's the difference? What do you want with me?"

Sanfred continued to stare at her in confusion. "Um… you do realize you're wanted right? There's a high reward for you."

Now it was Mine's turn to stare in surprise. "What? When did they put a hit out for me?"

"Does it matter? I saw it, then I saw you, then yeah. So really what I'm doing is totally legal."

"No, it's not!" she said defiantly.

"Keep your voice down," Sanfred ordered, his own tone suddenly filled with sternness. "Don't take advantage of my compassion. I'll leave you tied up with your mouth taped shut for your entire time here if that's what you'd prefer. I'm trying to give you some respect, though."

That helped Mine to put things in perspective a bit, but she still didn't grasp how this all began. "Why would there be a wanted poster for me? I'm just an innocent girl."

Suddenly, Sanfred and Rod were both standing next to each other. After a moment of silence, they erupted in laughter together, while Rod tossed the flagon about playfully.

"You? Innocent?" Sanfred shook his head in disbelief. "So, then… what about this?" He motioned to the wall across the room… where Mine's Ancient Empire Pumpkin was propped up.

"Hey! That's mine!" she nearly screamed. "I mean… what is that thing? Some kind of tool for building a palace?"

"God, you're terrible at acting like a dumb kid," Rod commented with a chuckle. "I could do better."

"He could," Sanfred agreed, still laughing over it all. "Anyway, I'm in need of a drink or ten. We have the evening to relax and enjoy some time off. Then tomorrow, we're going to review all the offers and figure out what to do with you."

"What? Offers?" Mine was talking, but the entire time she was feeling at the ropes that were keeping her wrists bound.

"Yeah," Sanfred explained. "You're worth more money to some people. Some want you alive. Some dead. Some want to marry you. You know, weird people shit. We just want to get the best deal out of it all."

Mine kept glaring defiantly but she said nothing.

"Just drink for now, though," Rod said with another laugh as he held the flagon over to Mine, propping it so some wine crawled down the opening toward her face. "Open up."

Instead, the liquid spilled on her face, and she brought her face away, closing her eyes in irritation.

"Lightweight," Rod muttered, pulling it back to drink on his own.

Apparently, Sanfred sensed that the torment was in bad taste, and he took the flagon away from Rod. Once he set it down, he fetched a small cloth and gently wiped Mine's face clean, although she remained bitter. "We'll feed you and give you water," he assured her. "Just don't be annoying. Be a good girl and get a good night of sleep. After tonight… things are gonna be kind of… bad."

While Mine gazed at her captors in shock and fear, they just seemed to laugh it off and drink on into the night.
