Hello everyone! This is going to be a special project for me! I started this account in 2018 hoping to get back into fanfiction writing and the fandom as a whole. Since then I've wrote quite a few stories and improved greatly as a writer! The first story I wrote on this profile by the name of Mind Visions was a very interesting concept, and I've always wanted to explore more of it! I figured that after two years, why don't we come back and see what it would have been like had I written it now, with all the additional experience that comes with that! This story will be expanding upon the things brought up in the original Mind Visions, but it will be tied together with a full story, rather than the individual chapter structure of the original! So, without further delay, I present the remaster of Mind Visions, also known as...
The Kitsune Legacy
Awakening
"Can't lose me Egghead!" The taunt echoed throughout the trees, breaking the silence of the normally tranquil landscape. A hovercraft carrying the aforementioned scientist darted through the trees, followed closely by a blue and orange blur.
"We'll see about that rodent!" Eggman yelled back, accelerating further and taking a sharp right turn to avoid oncoming foliage. Sitting on the console's surface was a Chaos Emerald, its green hue cloaking the surface beneath it in soft green light.
Sonic accelerated and tried to pull alongside the craft, causing the scientist to turn sharply to the left, attempting to avoid being cut off. The hedgehog slowed down slightly, allowing the orange blur with him to catch up.
"We're close right?" The speedster asked.
"Yep," The fox replied, before speaking into the communicator situated on his wrist. "Just a little further, you two ready?"
"Yep, we're all set!" Amy's voice responded.
"Ready here as well." Knuckles' voice answered.
As the hovercraft approached a clearing in the trees, a set of ancient ruins came into view. Coated in plant life and foliage, it had been abandoned for centuries. The hallow archway that dominated the exterior of the structure acting as the perfect location to set a trap. As they approached, Sonic and Tails moved alongside their target, boxing him in and preventing an easy escape on either side.
"Now!"
As soon as that word was spoken, Knuckles dropped from the top of the arch, landing firmly on the vehicle and swiping the gemstone from the console before jumping off and clinging to one of the nearby walls. Eggman whipped his head around to look backward at the echidna, unaware of a pink hedgehog in front of him, readying her hammer.
"Miserable little pests!" The scientist shouted. "You'll pay for-" He didn't have the time to finish as Amy's mallet struck the front of the craft, smashing the metal plating inward and shattering the glass on the front. The impact knocked the scientist off balance and he lost control, sending the craft crashing into the dirt. Smoke flowed outward from the machine as it slowly ascended into the air once more, and Eggman straightened his goggles, growling at the assembled group.
While he debated on trying to get the gem back, the damage sustained to the hovercraft forced him to retreat, grumbling to himself as he vanished into the distance.
"Nice job!" Tails commented, "You guys were perfect!"
"Well, we couldn't have done it without your planning." Amy responded, causing the kit to blush a little.
"Thanks..." The fox turned to face the ruin that they were at. "This thing is huge!"
"Seriously," Knuckles responded. "Not sure who built it though..."
Sonic glanced at Tails out of the corner of his vision. "Race you to the top!"
"Oh, you're on!" Came the response as the two dashed up the stone building.
Knuckles sighed, "Can those two be serious for one second?"
"I'm not sure it's in their vocabulary." Amy responded, letting a quiet chuckle escape her thoughts.
While the hedgehog darted inside the building, the fox took to the air. Landing atop the large central archway just in time to have the blue speedster rush by him as they continued up. Following him indoors to a small room situated on the upper half of the structure, Tails spotted the evening sunlight through a hole in the ceiling and flew up to it, pulling himself through only to find the sight of familiar red and white shoes.
"Sorry bud," The hedgehog began. "Looks like I beat you this time!"
Tails let out a laugh and allowed the hedgehog to help pull him up. "Fair and square... You want to give this place a look on the way back down?"
"Looked interesting enough, I don't see why not?"
The duo made their way down a small walkway on the outside of the building, finding a large interior room decorated with vines and moss among the chipped and crumbling rock carvings.
"This place is awesome!" Tails responded, "To think a civilization built something like this without any of our technology!"
"Really makes you think huh?"
After saying this, Tails' ears perked up. He could have sworn he heard a voice of some sort, a whisper if he had to describe it, and it certainly didn't belong to anybody he knew.
"Must have just been the wind." He thought to himself, figuring the cracks in the rock could create that sort of sound. As he thought that however, he heard the voice again. This time he just barely managed to make out a single word among its sentence. "Come..."
"Sonic? Tails? You in here?" Amy's voice echoed, as she and Knuckles entered.
"Look at this place!" Tails answered.
"Reminds me of Angel Island a bit..." The echidna responded.
"There any chance one of the echidna tribes built this thing?" Sonic asked, causing Knuckles to ponder the question for a moment.
"Well, it's not impossible. Most of their work would have been near Angel Island, so I doubt it. But this design doesn't look like any tribe that I know of."
The azure hedgehog grabbed the green gemstone out of the echidna's hand, "Just figured it was worth asking. Whelp, me and Tails have probably got to be headed back, right bud?"
"Yeah," The fox responded.
The duo said their goodbyes and returned home. By the time they arrived night had fallen, and they quickly got into their shared bunkbed to sleep. Tails however, found himself unable to. He tossed and turned in his top bunk, thinking about the voice he'd heard at the ruins. He'd just been imagining things, right? Surely it was all in his head? Eventually, however, his curiosity had to be sated and he carefully made his way down the short ladder to the floor and silently left the room. Heading downstairs and putting on his shoes, stepped outside, retrieving a flashlight for the trip along the way. His trek through the trees at night was rather peaceful and helped him to relax a bit. Eventually, the temple came into view, but as he approached a voice from behind him scared him out of his thoughts.
"Where do you think you're going?" He'd heard Sonic ask, startling the fox and causing him to drop his flashlight.
"I just thought I'd check this place out again..." Tails responded, leaning down and grabbing his light back.
"In the middle of the night?"
"Y- Yeah..." Came the nervous answer.
"Tails, I can tell when something's bothering you ya know. So, what's up? You can tell me."
The fox sighed, "When we were here earlier, I thought I heard a voice almost call for me... It wasn't anybody that was with us though, and I couldn't make out what it was saying as it wasn't much louder than a whisper. I just need to know if I did hear something. I can't sleep until then."
There was a pause for a moment as Sonic took in the answer. "Alright, but I'm coming with you."
Tails nodded and the duo made their way into the stone structure. It was a very different experience at night, as the flashlight illuminated the small cracks and sprawling vines, casting shadows across the walls and ceilings. As soon as the two entered the doorway, Tails felt the voice call to him once again.
"I just heard it again!" He exclaimed, "It's coming from down below somewhere..."
The two made their way down a stairwell into the depths of the structure. Coming across a small internal chamber. As they reached the bottom of the stairwell, the voice spoke once again. Instructing Tails further down into the depths, Sonic tentatively followed closely behind as the fox lead the duo further down into darkness.
As soon as they'd reached the bottom of another set of stairs, they found themselves face to face with a wall covered in intricate carvings across its surface. Situated in the middle of the carving was a circular dark blue sapphire, about the size of a palm. Ancient runes that the two of them couldn't hope to decipher sat around the gem as it reflected the glow from the flashlight throughout the room.
"Touch the stone..." The voice spoke again. As it said that, the fox found himself almost drawn to the gem. He wanted to touch it. No, he needed to touch it. But before he could, Sonic grabbed him by the arm.
"Tails, I can't hear a thing! You're starting to scare me..."
"How can you not hear it!? Let me go!"
Out of shock from the sudden outburst, Sonic released his grip and the fox stepped up to the gemstone removing his glove revealing the white-furred paw underneath and set it against the cold glasslike surface. For a moment, all was still and quiet. Tails removed his hand from the gem. Instantly, he heard a voice speak in his head, then another, then several more as his own thoughts were drowned out by a maddening cacophony of voices and sounds. He clutched his hands to his temples and fell to his knees, digging his fingers into the fur on his head in pain. Sonic was instantly at his side.
"Tails! You alright!?" He asked, panic filling his voice.
Rather than a response however, Tails screamed. Throwing his head back in pain as he opened his eyes, revealing a bright blue glow shining from them. After a moment, the fox relaxed, and his scream subsided, leaving his exhausted panting as the only noise.
"I- I'm gonna help you up here alright..." Sonic began, trying his best to assist the younger of the two to his feet.
The fox was incredibly uneasy on his feet, shaking as he spoke. "Sonic... I feel dizzy..."
As soon as he said those words, he collapsed, his eyes closing as he fell limp.
"Tails? Tails!?" Sonic exclaimed before scooping him into his arms and dashed back up the stairs and out of the temple. Trying to find anybody that could help…
Alright everyone! Leave your thoughts down below! It's kind of incredible to be revisiting this idea years later and I hope you all like it just as much as I did! Until next time!
