Audrey stood in bed. She stared at a pocket watch that she was holding in her wing. It was a gift that Melissa had given her. She started to tear up again.
That was when she heard a knock. Audrey wiped her tears away and called out to the knocker. "Come in!"
The door opened. It was Muriel. She stood and looked at Audrey sympathetically. She was concerned at the depressed duck.
"Oh, hey, Muriel," Audrey said before asking, "What do you want?"
"I came to tell you that Courage has a surprise waiting for you downstairs," she answered with a warm smile.
"A surprise? For me?" Audrey asked with confusion and surprise.
"Yes, and it's wouldn't be fair if we kept it waiting," Muriel said. She made some gestures for Audrey to follow her downstairs.
Blinking a couple of times, Audrey followed Muriel downstairs and gasped. There she was. A tall yellow cat with green stripes and green paws. Her blue eyes glimmered like diamonds.
"Miss me, Audrey?" she asked. Audrey wiped her eyes to make sure they weren't deceiving her. But for sure, Melissa was actually there. Audrey stood there, frozen in her place and blinking a bit. That was when the unexpected happened.
Courage was there to witness it. For the first time, Courage saw that Audrey was no longer depressed. For the first time, he actually saw her smile. Audrey's smile grew larger. With warning, she jumped onto Melissa, bringing her into a tight hug.
"It's you, it's actually you!" she said. This time her tone wasn't depressed either. It was really cheerful. Courage and Muriel smiled. "Melissa, you're back! I've MISSED you very much! I thought I'd never see you again!"
"Aw, I missed you too," Melissa told her best friend. Audrey looked at Courage, remembering that he told her that he would save Melissa. Courage and his pals: Kitty, Bunny, Shirley, and the Duck Brothers, all blinked at Audrey as they gave warm smiles.
Audrey continued to hug her long lost best friend. The two hugged each other. They giggled a bit and had always looked at Courage to give him smiles and blinks of their own.
"That's how it happened."
A year had passed since Courage saved Melissa. After a while, Audrey and Melissa decided to visit their old friend, especially after hearing about the passing of Muriel and Eustace. However they had no idea that 12 cats from outer space had already beat to the spot of living with Courage.
"Wow, Courage helped a lot of people," Melinda said.
"Well, Courage is very talented," Audrey said, giving Courage a nice pat on the head with her wing. Courage giggled a bit.
"We wish you could stay with us if you guys care about Courage so much and want to stay here with him, but I'm not sure there are any room for three more people," one of Melinda's brothers, Daniel, said.
"Though you can visit as much as you want to take care of Courage," Lenny added, "Kitty, Bunny, the Duck Brothers, and even Shirley do it almost everyday."
"That'd be lovely," Melissa said, giving Courage another pat on the head.
Courage certainly loved his new family. However, he knew that there would be many crazy things happening, more than what Muriel and Eustace experienced.
