Leliana leaned over the railing, looking at all the beautiful ravens occupying the various cages, when she spied one that looked considerably different to the others.
At first glance, nothing about this raven would appear off but on closer inspection, this particular raven had much shinier feathers and more well-fed.
Leliana squinted, trying to get a better look at the raven without moving from her current position. Around its body hung a harness with a family crest of a distinct House.
Suddenly, the raven hopped off from the perch and glided down to a scout who had called it with three tongue clicks. Leliana moved, a look of confusion on her face.
The scout appeared to be attaching a small note to the leg of the raven and whisper something to it. With that, the raven took flight. Leliana approached the scout, realising that he wasn't one of hers.
"Scout." His face went white. "Yes, Sister Leliana?" She placed her hands behind her back, pacing back and forth in front of him. This was her signature move when she was looking to interrogate someone.
"Who did you send that raven to?"
"What raven?"
Leliana scrunched her lips at his response. The scout was sweating, knowing he had been caught but trying his best to play dumb. Leliana was not in the mood.
She proceeded to grab the scout by the ear, dragging him down the stairs in the tower.
"Ow, ow, ow!" repeated the scout as she dragged him into Josephine's office where Cassandra was conversing with the ambassador, throwing him to the ground in front of her desk. Josephine immediately stood up to look over her desk at the cowering figure.
Cassandra took out her blade and held it under the chin of the scout, forcing his head up to be met by the twin glares of Leliana and Cassandra, whilst Josephine's was more sympathetic.
"I caught this scout sending a message using an unknown raven. He is not one of mine. And the raven had a harness with a crest on it."
"I'm new."
"And who were you sending that raven to?"
"I wasn't sending any ravens!"
"Liar!" growled Cassandra, her blade starting to gently cut the skin of his neck. "You are clearly a spy! Tell us who you work for or pay with your life!"
"I swear, I wasn't doing anything!"
Josephine studied the face of the rather frightened scout. She noticed from his features that he was distinctly from the Free Marches. A captivating thought entered her mind.
"Modest in temper…."
"Bold in deed." The scout covered his mouth with both his hands, his eye wide in shock. Cassandra and Leliana look at each other in confusion, then to Josephine who smiled arrogantly.
She pulled a letter from one of the drawers in her desk and set it down, pointing at the crest. "Was this the one you saw Leliana?"
Leliana peered over the paper, "yes."
"Then we do indeed have a spy in our midst, but …. "Josephine gestured to Cassandra to lower her sword, blood beginning to trickle from the light wound she had inflicted.
"He is the spy of a friend."
"What friend?" Leliana and Cassandra enquired in unison.
Josephine gestured to the spy to tell. He now stood, looking incredibly defeated, with his hand to his neck to stop the light bleeding.
"Lucille Eostre Blythe, First Lady of the House Trevelyan. Noble House of Ostwick."
Josephine beamed. "I had always heard rumours of the Grand Lady's reach extended all over, and it would appear that not even our Inquisition is spared."
The scout lowered his head, "When she heard the Inquisition was in need of recruits, the Noble Lady was quite adamant that I join up."
Josephine let out a little squeal of delight, the entire situation was nothing less than thrilling to her. Cassandra and Leliana did not share in her enthusiasm. But Josephine did not care and could not stop herself from grinning ear to ear.
The spy put his hands together, his eyes filled with pleading. He knew that his life was very much on the line.
"I promise all the information I have sent is about the Inquisitor herself, nothing else. The Noble Lady is very protective of her Grand Niece and would want to know about the relationship …. between …. "
The scout immediately noticed the combined looks of confusion from the faces around him.
"Between?" All three leaned in closer to him, as beads of sweat profusely dripped down his face.
"Between herself and the Commander …. They were seen kissing on the battlements …. I thought everyone knew?"
"WHAT!"
