A/N: Thank you for the reviews so far. We finally start getting somewhere in this chapter.
Chapter 4
The three brothers now looked uncomfortable. "Uh…we're gonna go…Mikey are you sure you remember the way back?" Leo asked.
"Yeah…" he felt so stupid in this moment and wished he never opened his big, dumb mouth.
"Don't go busting up anymore druggies okay Mikey?" Raph said before he, Leo and Donnie leapt to the next rooftop and away.
The awkward silence between Mira and Mikey stretched on until finally he gathered the courage to say. "I'm sorry…I am an idiot…we're just friends aren't we?" he hoped they were at least that.
Her expression softened. He really didn't remember…she was suddenly wrought with sadness that the memories they had made the past few weeks were now gone. She thought hard about how to answer this. "We are friends…but we've come to care about each other quite a lot over the past month."
His expression changed as he began grinning broadly then. "I'm pretty proud of past me at this point. Can you tell me about it? It might help my memories come back." He suggested.
"That's a great idea, okay let me tell you about the day we first met…" she said and gestured at him to come over sit in one the two chairs they always sat in.
By the end of it all he had a much better idea of where he stood with this girl. He figured he probably did have strong feelings for her judging by the way she described him and everything he had done so far for her. His memory was still hazy but at least he was now on the right track to remembering her.
"I thought you had decided you didn't want to see me anymore…" her voice suddenly said.
He felt a deep pang of guilt. He hated that he'd been reckless and caused this poor girl to worry in such a way. "I'm so sorry about that…I know I would never have wanted to make you feel that way." He said quietly.
She took his hand startling him a bit but he relaxed into her touch quickly giving her hand a squeeze. "It's okay Mikey, I can see now that the life you live is not always an easy one, it can be really dangerous, I'm sorry for what happened to you." She had a strong urge to hug him but she didn't want him to be overwhelmed. "Also you spoke just then as if you remembered me."
"Hey…I did." He squeezed her hand again happily. "It's working!"
She yawned suddenly and he was suddenly reminded of how late it was. "Hey, we can continue this next week okay?"
She bit her lip as she asked. "Promise?"
He suddenly pulled out his shell phone. "I promise. I'll add your number to my phone so this doesn't happen again."
She happily relayed her number and he added it in before sending her a quick message. Her phone pinged as she could see that it worked.
"Thank you…" she said, and hugged him. This time he placed his arms around her and it felt just like the hugs he used to give her. Feeling bold she tilted her head to his cheek and planted a soft kiss there.
She pulled away and gave him a shy smile. "So you don't forget about me again."
He gently touched the spot where she had kissed him with a look of awe. "I would never forget that, babe."
"Good…" she started to make her way to the rooftop entrance. "See you in a week."
"See you…" he said and watched her leave. He was definitely going to be back.
For the next week Mikey was plagued with dreams about dark hair and honey-coloured eyes and he soft body pressed against his. His memories still had not returned completely but he had flashes now and again. The way she smiled, the way she laughed when he said something stupid. The cute way she would bite her lip when she was nervous about something.
He decided to speak to Master Splinter about it.
He shuffled up to his Master's room and lightly tapped on the door.
"Enter Michelangelo." Came the sharp reply.
How does he do that…Mikey wondered. He meekly entered and kneeled before him, placing his hands on his thighs.
"Hello, my son." The aging rat said in a calm voice. "Please join me for some tea." He poured him a cup from his worn terracotta-coloured teapot.
Mikey accepted the tiny clay cup and took a sip. He wasn't a huge fan of tea but when your ninja-master-rat-father pours you a cup…you take it.
"What seems to be troubling you?" His father asked.
"Well, it's like this: I met a girl last month, Mira, and we became really good friends…right? Then I got my head conked out last week and forgot all the memories of meeting her and—"
Splinter held up a hand to stop him. "Slow down, my son. Let me process everything you just said." He took his own cup and drew a nice long sip of his tea. Then he gently set the cup down and tweaked his whiskers with one hand.
"So you have made a female friend and I trust you have taken the safety of our family into account…" Mikey gave a vigorous nod so he continued. "…and since your accident you have been unable to remember how you met her." He carefully explained. "Was her reaction to meeting you again after the accident a positive one?"
He took another sip. "Yes Sensei, she…hugged me." He said with a smile. "She was worried about me." He added.
His father smiled as well. "That is a good sign my son. It tells me that before those memories were lost you two were good friends and she enjoyed your company." He paused. "So where does your concern lie?"
"Just…what if I never get my memories back? Do we start all over again?" he asked worriedly.
"Do you value your friendship with her?" Another vigorous nod. "Then you owe it to yourself and her to try again."
"Also Sensei…I keep having these dreams about her…" He did not want to go into detail with some of them and hoped he wouldn't ask.
"That is your unconscious mind trying to work out its struggles while you sleep. I would suggest paying close attention to what your dreams are telling you." He advised.
"Hai, thank you Sensei." Mikey bowed his head.
"You are very welcome, my son and I am happy you have made a new friend, she must be very special indeed." His father said while taking another sip of his tea.
Mikey stood and bowed one more time before leaving. "Thank you Sensei, she is."
He left the room, silently shutting the door behind him. It was almost time to meet Mira. He tried to think of what past him would have brought with him for an activity.
He spied the projector and the movies he had brought with him all those weeks ago. Suddenly he had flashes of them sitting together and her soft head on his shoulder.
He snatched up the projector and the movies and put them in his backpack. He decided on a quick shower and a clean bandana before leaving as well.
He remembered the way but it felt like déjà vu as he jumped across the rooftops. The setting sun painted the city skyscrapers in a glorious orange glow. He had another flash; a small sailboat on the bay…was he looking at it through a telescope? No…that wasn't right…it was a camera…her camera!
He grinned broadly. Another memory!
He saw Mira just setting up the folding chairs when he hopped down causing her to jump in surprise. "You came!" she happily exclaimed. "Have your memories returned?"
"Not…completely but I remembered something as I was coming here, I must have looked through your camera and seen a sailboat…does that sound right?" he asked and watched her excitedly pull out a magazine of Sailing Weekly.
"This is the photo you took, you did it on one of our first meetings." She said, handing it to him.
Another memory jumped into his mind, it was the scent of roses…what could it be from? There were certainly no rose bushes up here.
"I remember! I took this picture and then…the only thing that's coming to my mind is the smell of roses…did I bring you some?" He asked.
Mira took a moment to think. The only thing that could be related to the smell of roses was…she felt her face grow hot. "Probably my shampoo? It contains rosewater."
Her…shampoo, which meant…Oh my God I'm such a creep. "Oh…I must have caught a whiff of it when you hugged me."
He looked so flustered she had to laugh. "It's okay, I…smelled you too if that helps?"
That couldn't help teasing her about. With a laugh he said. "Oh? Was it sweat and leather?" he joked.
She stuck her tongue out at him playfully. "No!...Yes, I mean, not exactly! It was those two things faintly but it was just a 'manly' smell okay?"
He laughed out loud and decided to rescue her. "It's alright babe, I was kidding, I shower. I hope past me wouldn't have thought of coming here without doing that."
She laughed at the ridiculousness of their conversation. She realized he was trying to make her feel less awkward by covering it up in humour aimed at himself. It was really sweet.
"Do you remember anything else?" she asked after she caught her breath again.
"Bits and pieces…Oh!" He took his backpack off and began rummaging around in it. He took out the projector and said. "Did I bring this? I feel like we watched a movie together with it."
"We did! We watched Demolition Man and I fell asleep on your shoulder." She said with a shy smile.
That whole memory now was complete, the movie, the sitting together and putting his arm around her as she fell asleep.
He suddenly grabbed her hands. "I remember now! That whole night!" He was so overcome with happiness he pulled her into his arms and spun her around gleefully.
She shrieked in surprise and laughed. "That's great Mikey!" her voice was a bit strained from his tight hug.
He put her down and smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, babe."
She took a breath and gave her head a shake. "Don't worry about it, I'm glad we're getting somewhere."
Pretty soon they were sitting together watching another movie on the projector, a different one this time. Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Mira felt comfortable enough to lean on his shoulder again and he put his arm around her like before but she didn't fall asleep this time.
When the movie ended and the two of them were standing by the edge of the building she asked. "Can you tell me more about the night you were attacked? Do you remember anything? You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to."
That night had come back too in bits and pieces. "I don't like to remember it but from what I can gather…I had a fight with my brother Leo before heading over to see you. I hadn't told him I was seeing you yet and Leo can be quite the busybody, I dunno if I mentioned that." She nodded and he continued. "I stormed out apparently and on my way to you I stuck my nose where it didn't belong and tried to break up a fight between a couple of drug dealers. They were a lot stronger than they looked and a nearby junkie must have drugged me with something. Anyway they beat me up and just left me there. Leo found me later." He finished.
Mira was almost too shocked to speak. "Y-you could've died…and I thought…" she could feel tears gathering in her eyes.
"Hey…" his voice took on a soothing tone as he gently tilted her face up to meet his. "I'm okay and whatever you felt when I was down is totally valid. I probably would've felt the same way."
She felt his rough thumb gently caress her cheek as he brushed her tears away. "I'm glad you're okay…" she whispered, her golden brown eyes staring into his bright blue ones.
He had the strongest urge to kiss her then but he immediately tamped it down. There was no way she was interested in him like that. As if he could be so lucky…his face drew closer but he stayed there waiting to see what she would do.
There was a pause and Mira could feel something building…like the air had changed between them. She glanced at those lips of his and wondered if he knew how to use them. After nothing happened it quickly became clear that he was waiting for her to make the first move.
Finally deciding to throw caution into the wind she stepped closer into his space, placed both of her hands on his biceps and closed the distance between their lips. They were softer and drier than she thought they would be and larger than hers but not overly so.
Mikey's brain had overloaded the moment her lips touched his. He had never kissed a girl before; he didn't know where to put his hands and flailed for a moment before placing them on her shoulders.
She giggled against his mouth as his display and pulled back. "Was that okay?" she asked.
He finally found his voice. "Um, yeah!" Crap, be cool about it! "I mean…that was really nice." He was embarrassed to admit that she was his first kiss.
Judging from his awkwardness she figured she was the first girl to ever kiss him and she was okay with that. "Good…because I liked it too."
Mikey felt warmth bloom in his chest and was glad that he didn't somehow manage to screw that up. "C-can we try again?" he stuttered.
A nod and once again her lips were on his firmly but not moving. He felt like they should move but he didn't know how. He felt her pull away and then brush her lips against his just a little bit before pressing against them once more. This time her lips were slightly open.
He was able to mimic her movements and tried to do the same. His upper lip caught her lower one and his bottom one was now being tickled by her tongue. His grip on her shoulders tightened when he felt her do that. It felt really good.
Pretty soon they fell into a rhythm together…kissing, sucking and her hot tongue in his mouth. It felt like heaven. He wished he had all of his memories back. Was this the first time they'd done this? He gently moved her back and stared intently into her eyes.
"Have we done this before?" he asked hoarsely.
She looked so beautiful to him then with her lips slightly swollen and the dazed look of happiness on her face. "No…" she answered. "This is the first time."
Without skipping a beat he said. "Good." And captured her lips once more. He was getting good at it now and their make-out session was becoming a little more intense. It just kept getting better and better.
He wanted to feel more of her. He moved one of his hands from her shoulder and let it tangle in her long dark tresses. The other hand he moved to the middle of her back gently rubbing her through her thin T-shirt.
Her hands were busy too. One had found its way to his chest while the other was curled around his neck and the back of his head. Her body was nearly pressed right against his.
Mira was amazed, kissing him was so different from anything she had experienced before but it was so much better. He was a fast learner and knew how to tug and pull on her lips and dance his tongue around in her mouth in a way that made her feel like melting right into him. She felt his arm slide around her more pulling her closer to him. She placed both arms around his neck and pressed herself as close as she could get.
Mikey let out an involuntary moan when he felt her soft curves right up against his firm chest. He had no idea kissing could feel this good but he had to know something…why him? He never thought that he would ever get this chance. Also he needed to come up for air.
He pulled his mouth away and took in a few deep breaths.
She looked worried. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Why did you stop?"
He held up a finger. "One: air…" and then the other. "Two: Why me? Not that I'm complaining but…have you seen me? Like, have you really taken a good look? I'm not like other guys, I'm…not human and I don't even have all of my memories back…" he said, looking ashamed of himself.
She placed both of her hands on his round cheeks making him look into her eyes. "This isn't some kind of casual thing for me…I like you. You're funny, sweet and kind. Also, I've dated 'human' guys. They've got nothing on you."
He couldn't help but smile bashfully at her praise. "I like you too…more than I've ever liked anyone…he gently slipped his fingers into her strands of hair. "Does this mean I can call you my girlfriend now?" he waggled his eye-ridges.
She dropped her hands and laughed. "Yes Mikey, you can call me that now." She wrapped her arms around his neck and said. "You get all the perks of having one too." She grinned.
He didn't know entirely what that would consist of but he couldn't wait to find out. He dipped down to capture her lips once more when his shell phone went off. He groaned and answered it. "Yo."
It was Leo just checking up on him. "I'm fine Leo, I'm with Mira…yeah." He paused. "I know it's late, yes morning practice…okay, see ya bye." He ended the call.
"Overprotective Leo?" she asked.
"Yeah…he's probably right though I should be heading back." He looked exremely regretful of that fact. "Same time next week?"
She nodded, biting her bottom lip again. "Unless I message you to come sooner…" she winked.
He pulled her in for one last firm, yet passionate kiss. "Hey…the sooner the better." He reluctantly pulled away and packed up his stuff. He blew her a kiss and leapt off the building with a loud 'whoop!' and then a further away 'cowabunga!'.
Mira doubled over laughing and couldn't help but release a dreamy sigh before going back inside.
Mikey was practically back-flipping over the buildings. His heart was so full at this moment it felt like it could burst.
Raph, the only one still awake certainly noticed the change in him when he arrived home.
"Ho-ohh, someone's in a good mood. Raph crowed. "Get some action there little bro?"
Mikey immediately stopped and gave his brother a glare. "It's not like that Raph…we just kissed is all…" he mumbled.
"What's that?" Raph put a hand to where his 'ear' was. "Couldn't hear ya bro."
He gave a major eye-roll. "Raph grow up." Those words sounded strange coming out of his mouth. "We just kissed. It's not a big deal!"
"Maybe not to me…but it was for you, first time kissing a girl?" he teased.
"Shut up…like you have any idea what you're doing in that department…" he knew he was baiting Raph here but it was like he couldn't help it.
His words were causing Raph to get a bit steamed. "Hey! I'll have you know that I know more on the subject than you baby bro…"
"Fine, I totally believe you since you've been SO open about that kind of thing." He said sarcastically.
Raph was getting more worked up by the minute. "You want proof?! Fine!" he stomped over to Mikey and pulled a single photograph out of his belt.
It was a pretty nice-looking girl with sandy-blond hair standing beside an oddly happy Raphael, the girl looked similar to Mira but older. The photo itself was the type printed out from a photo booth.
"This is Chrissy…we met last year. She actually found me, I had been been in a bad gang fight and I wasn't gonna make it back home. She found me and took me in for a night."
Mikey's eyes widened in realization. "That's the night we couldn't find you! Leo was so worried…" he gasped. "That means…"
Raph nodded. "After that, I…kept going back to see her and pretty soon we started doin' stuff…she'd call me up and I'd just go there. It wasn't serious or anythin'…until it was."
For once Mikey did not allow his attention-deficit to kick in, he was totally enraptured by this story.
"She started telling me she wanted something more…something I couldn't give her." He looked away, ashamed. "I was a coward so…I ended it…pretty sure I broke her heart that day."
"Jeez…Raph I had no idea, I-I'm sorry…" Mikey said reaching over to give his shoulder a pat.
"Nobody knew…and I'd like to keep it that way okay?" He said in a somewhat menacing voice. "The point is…I do know."
Mikey barely heard him; he now had this look of absolute wonder on his face. "Raph…do you realize what this means?! It means…we're compatible…" Mikey gasped dreamily. "That stuff is entirely possible with Mira…"
"Whoa, calm down lover-boy. This is a very delicate dance you're entering into." Raph said. "You gotta take things slow…and even then she might say no, are you prepared for that?"
Raph's words caused him to snap back to reality. He hadn't considered that but he knew he would never force her to do anything she didn't want to do with him. "Yeah…I am. I really like her, I wouldn't want her to be uncomfortable, I respect her far too much."
"Good answer, always ask for consent and if she says no at any time, you stop. Okay?" He explained. "Also you don't want to take chances with birth control, even though we're different, you never know…pregnancy could happen."
Mikey nodded. "That makes sense, I really appreciate this Raph…seriously." Mikey suddenly hugged him and squeezed tightly to emphasize his point.
"Okay, okay…jeez, just don't tell anyone what I told you, okay?" Raph said before heading off to his room.
"I promise…" Mikey said before heading to his own bedroom. It took him quite a long time to fall asleep. His mind was awhirl with thoughts about everything Raph had told him and thinking about Mira. When he finally did sleep, he dreamed another lost memory. This one was of him and Mira talking and laughing while playing a board game together. It was such a nice memory that Mikey didn't even mind that he had early morning practice and very little sleep.
End Chapter 4
A/N Aww, I really enjoyed writing the first kiss. Love these two.
