Like Blood In My Veins

Chapter One~ Shoot for the Moon...

"Mommy, look!" a little girl squeeled with glee, chubby finger pointing to the sky.

"I know, sweetie. That's why we're here." A young woman and her daughter sat on a red and white gingam picnic blanket, thermos of hot chocolate set between them with two cups on either side of it. Shareesa gathered up the girl into her lap, holding her tight to keep the mid-autumn chill from her, even though she was already bundled up in a coat two sizes too big, along with a hat and scarf. "It just so happened that five years ago, on this very night, something just like this happened. The night you were born, your grandpa told me to look outside the window. And wouldn't you know it? Shooting stars. Angel tears falling for my little girl."

"Marcus told us in class that shooting stars are just bits of rock and gas getting too close to Earth and burning up, and that's why they look like that." The little girl pouted.

"Well," Shareesa swept her daughter's bangs out of her eyes and under her hat, green to match her eyes, "Don't you worry about what Marcus says. He's just a silly little boy. He doesn't know what he's talking about. Now, Kira Lee, I want you to watch. And the next one you see, I want you to squish your eyes closed real tight to hold that star in your heart. And then, I want you to make a wish. Wish it with all your heart, but don't ever tell it. Not until it comes true. You'll jinx it otherwise."

"Ok, mommy." Dutifully, the little girl turned her face to the sky, ignoring the cold breeze that had begun to pick up, stinging her cheeks. Her bright eyes searched the inky blackness pinpricked with spots of light. They sat in silence for a few minutes, waiting with bated breath.

A gasp left the girl's lips as the night sky began to light up with streaks of silver. "Make a wish, sweetie!" her mother urged.

She waited until she saw what she thought to be the biggest and brightest shooting star, the most beautiful angel tear, her child's mind told her, and squeezed her eyes shut. She wished and wished, the way any little girl does, for the same thing all little girls wish for.

Star light, star bright, my star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight:

I wish for a man like my daddy. Someone big and strong, that will love me like daddy loved mommy. I wish for him to be smart, and handsome, and perfect for me.
