Chapter 2 - The Generous Mr Haddock
Early mornings, if you've ever experience them, then you understand the pain of this.
" Ruffnut, we are late, get up, get up, get up!"
Astrid had worked throughout her summer break, but Ruff had lost her grandmother in the early weeks of June and took time to grieve and spend time with family. But even Astrid had slept through her alarm. The email stated that everyone was to attend the welcome introduction at 9:30, it was now 8:52 and both of them were running extremely late.
" 5 more minutes Astrid, ummm tired" she turned in her sheets, not wishing to carry on with this conversation with her unwanted guest.
" Ruff I hate to break it to you but we don't have 5 minutes" she literally dragged her by her arms, hearing her plop on the floor as she hit the ground like dead weight.
" For fuck sake Astrid!" From the moment Astrid became aquatinted with Ruffnut, it came clear that she wasn't a morning person. Ruff was a party animal some could say, she was wild and free, enjoyed her night life and enjoyed the pleasures that came with it.
" Come on! No messing about or I'm coming back and burning your favourite bra" it was a threat she's made before, but Ruff knew better, Astrid had kept her promise once before when it came to burning her matching thong, her favourite thong, that Astrid did burn.
" Not my favourite bra, Astrid! THAT'S MY SEXY BRA!"
xx
" Can't believe I got up for this" they walked into the large auditorium, the gathering took place in five minutes, she had no clue how they made it, but the lack of makeup and presentation of her hair might have been one reason.
They were hustled into the auditorium by now new first years, second years, and tutors that were in a rush to get a seat. Looking back Astrid remembered the first time she was brought in here, after moving into her 1st year halls and meeting a very fiery Thornston twin, they sat down in this big hall, and she was so excited and yet so nervous. She'd been given the chance to go to university, this had been her chance to make something better for herself. She remembered sitting on the same chairs she was sitting on now, but this time the butterflies in her stomach wasn't because of nerves.
It had something to do with the fact her boyfriend sat next to the head of the university, and she had no idea why.
" oh my god! It's Hiccup Haddock! He never shows up here" Ruff had a point, for the past two years she'd never heard of Hiccup Haddock before this summer. He'd never come here to the university and apparently he'd been an ambassador and paying a lot money into this uni for nearly five years, and yet she'd never heard of him.
" so what is he doing here?" And better yet why didn't he tell her.
They had sat down as the head had already started his introduction, a load of bullshit they'd heard before about making this year the best year and so on and so forth. It was the same speech each year.
" well apparently a girl from my class put on the group chat about him making an extra donation this year, and I'm talking a whopping 2 million and that's just to the uni itself. He's also paying to help the business management course and take five students into his intern program, my course, that could be me." She whispered under the voice of the head, but even though it may not seem it she was listening to everything.
Hiccup never mentioned any of this to her about the money or the internship, nothing, and it wasn't like he had no chance, she literally spent the weekend at his. " why so generous then?"
She could sense the spite in her voice, she thought she'd be the first Hiccup would tell about this, as their relationship was supposed to last through this last year, how was is supposed to when he kept something so simple from her, did he not trust her with his affairs? But her stare didn't go unnoticed, as Hiccup could spot her bright blue eyes anywhere, he saw her confusion, probably wondering why he didn't tell her he'd be there, probably wondering why he didn't tell her anything in the first place.
" Who cares," Ruff carried on, not noticing her friends discomfort, " anyway I'm surprised you haven't heard of anything about it?" Her heart quickened at that statement, did Ruffnut know something about the company she kept in her bed? She turned slowly, but ruff didn't look like she knew anything, hoe could she? She was careful, wasn't she?
" What do you mean?" She treaded carefully with her question, if it sounded like she was guilty of hiding something Ruffnut would sniff it out.
" Well he asked for half of his donation to go to the photography course. Now you can stop complaining about how stupid the equipment is, though I don't know why, you use your mothers camera for everything" though she had a point her mothers camera was her favourite camera to use, it wasn't the photography equipment itself that was the problem really, it was the computers and the software system that was the problem. But right now she didn't care, this was a whole low for Hiccup, keeping this from her, now she knew why, if he told her about his plan she would have said no. And thats why he didn't, but what was he thinking? This will draw attention in, why would the generous Mr Haddock paying into the photography department if it wasn't for the fact he was sleeping with one of the students.
" Wow, that was nice of him" she kept her tone low, try to put off the scent of anything fishy, she couldn't seem to excited or to worried about it, so she had to keep herself neutral, act as if she didn't care for this Mr Haddock that had made a contribution to her department.
" Well thats how he is, kind, caring, fucking hot" oh and she forgot to mention that her roommate was completely head over heels for him. " I mean I've read everything about him, and have you seen him in glasses. I never thought I'd be attracted to geeks, but he is one 6'1 exception." Was it weird that she was jealous of her friends obsession over her boyfriend. She knew Hiccup would never go for Ruff in that way, she knew deep down she was way out of Hiccup,s league, she saw Hiccup back in his teenage years, seen him through uni, and yes puberty was very nice to Hiccup coming into his twenties. But he was a geeky kid, always where those silly glasses, but she had to admit ruff was right, he did look cute in glasses.
She saw his geeky side now, even when he wore his clean cut suits and nicely cut hair, he still looked very geeky in his own way. Like when he sat doing his work, and he would bite his lip and sticking his tongue out while concentrating, sitting with his laptop on his knee, and trying to focus on his work hard.
" He'd be my one fantasy that I'd make an exception" her friends fantasising about her boyfriend was getting old.
And how was she to listen to it when she was trying to hide that her said 'fantasy' was in her bed last week, snuck him out the morning after, right under her nose and she had just spent this weekend wrapped up in his sheets, drinking his wine and eating his food.
" Well I wouldn't hold my breath, anyone like that wouldn't go for someone like us. He probably go for a heiress to a global corporation no doubt." Half of what she said was true, when she first found out about hiccup she thought thats all he'd go for, but she changed when he told her how he felt.
" Alright, fine I'll keep my fantasies to myself. Chill"
As the head finished his speech, the auditorium erupted with claps and while everyone was distracted by this Astrid took the chance to look straight into Hiccup eyes. And he knew he was in trouble.
Xx
Running was like flying, it was like freedom when you could feel the ground under your feet. The dirt crumble under your shoe as you run, the wind whipping against your face. That was what made it feel like flying.
Astrid took many qualities from her parents, from that Hiccup found out, she'd once told him about her parents loves and hobbies, and from that Hiccup found she took her photography skills from her mother, finding the beauty in what others wouldn't. He particularly liked the phrase her mother told her ' a photo captures the truth, there is no exaggerating it, it was just you and your camera, and the scenery in front was just beauty waiting to be captured'.
However she was much like her farther too, the love for running and keeping active, her farther was a personal trainer and she'd tell Hiccup stories about how her farther would take her on long bike rides and running, he even taught her how to fight, incase she needed a bit of self defence when growing up.
That's why he loved her so much, loved seeing those two sides that make an extraordinary woman. So he stood watching as her marathon society same to an end of their afternoon run. She was the fastest of course, she was the best, and he'd have her no other way but being just herself, whether she was first, middle or last. She was just her in her full glory.
Beautiful.
While Astrid on the other hand found herself sweaty and disgusting as she'd come to the end of her run, taking out her head phones while gasping for breath. But he didn't go unnoticed by her, he stood out like a sore thumb in a grey suit while everyone else was in gym gear. She even spotted him as far as the other side of the field, cursing in her head as he promised not to mix their relationship with her university life, how the hell was she supposed to explain this if he was popping up like this.
So of course she would have to address it, so she turned to her friend, Aya, a beautiful girl she met on her first marathon. She originated from Africa, moved to America and then ended up in Berk doing a historic degree.
" I'm going for another lap" placing her headphones back in.
" damn girl, you are a machine" she gave her friend a smile, before heading back off again, but while her friends head to get showered, she took a detour.
He saw her coming from a mile off, so he walked off behind some trees to stay out on view. He only waited a few minutes, she was running into his arms quicker than he thought, but as he held his arms out and waited for her to jump in them, he got a punch in the chest instead.
" ow, that hurt, that really hurt" he rubbed his chest before blocking another one of her punches, okay so she was mad, now he understands. " so by that look I'm guessing I'm not in your good books" her eyes were fire, as she tore her headphone from her ears.
" we are way past good books Hiccup Haddock, 1. You didn't tell me about you coming today, 2. I didn't give you permission to do so and 3. You are wearing a suit that I do not approve of" she finished, crossing her arms and looking him up and down, he found it quite sexy the way she was stood there, perfect just as she was.
Even if she was ripping strips of what he was wearing, but when she did it so sexy he could only forgive her.
" okay one minute, what's wrong with my suit?" He'd picked it out especially for today, something certificated, something plane and proper.
" it's grey, you know I prefer you in burgundy, compliments your hair" and there she was, making her opinion known in her own Astrid way. He wore a burgundy suit on their official first date and she fell completely in love with him in that suit. He was just perfect, for once something perfect in her life.
" okay, well next time I'll try better," he had that snarky Hiccup smirk on his face cause he knew she was teasing. "anyway, the reason I didn't tell you about me coming was you would have said no, and it was an invitation. Wasn't like I could turn it down now honey could I?" The way he said honey made this feel like a lovers spat, and in his own little way made it known that they were still 'them'.
" of course I'd say no, I thought you said due to your reputation with the press that it would be best while I'm at uni for us to stay 'separate'" she had a point, they literally spent the weekend just sat talking about it, he didn't want her hounded by the magazines anymore than she did. So he nodded along with her, agreeing like he had done the day before. " so why donate so much money and half of it to my department as well, and now you show up here. If someone sees you, if someone found out -" she had a point, that he knew, and it wasn't his intention to draw attention to her.
" I'm sorry, it was a gift, I wanted to do something nice for you" because he was her sweet Hiccup after all, and no she couldn't be mad for long.
" well a girl usually likes flowers, or a box of chocolates" he laughed, she'd never go for flowers and chocolates it just wasn't her. He wasn't exactly your normal girly girl.
" that's normal girls, you're different" if he was anyone else she might have found that statement to be offensive, but in reality it was just proof of how much Hiccup actual knew her. It was true, she wouldn't take kindly to flowers for she saw no use of them. Flowers, when not in the ground, had no use, they'd just die in a few days, so Astrid thought it best they stay in the ground, not waste them on her. And hiccup listened when she told him her theory, he liked the answer, said it was a very 'Astrid theory' what ever thats supposed to mean.
" No I guess i'm not, so tell me, what to get a girl who's not exactly normal?" The question was simple, she was testing how much he knew her, and since he kept trying to get her gifts, he might as well know what kind of girl she was.
" I can give it a guess," he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small wrapped box, presenting it to her in his hands. " I know you don't like gifts, but this is for a special occasion, congratulations for getting into your 3rd year, you deserve it." He tried handing it to her, but she couldn't except it, while she stood there arms crossed she watched his face turn from a warm smile, to disappointment. It would be rude not to except it, he'd put effort into it as she could see.
So slowly she un crossed her arms and excepted the gift, not before speaking her mind of course, " thank you, but you know how I feel about gifts, I don't need them, so you don't have to keep getting me them" his arms wrapped around her, puling her into his warmth, and she soon forgot what she was talking about when his lips touched hers reminding her she should have done that before getting into a 'lovers spat' with him in the first place.
" what if I feel obligated to give you one once in a while" he hummed as his nose rubbed against hers, could she really deny him, it was becoming clear he was a weakness of hers. " aren't you gonna open it?" He looked down at his gift still in her hands, she held the wrappings delicately as she used her fingers to undo the wrapping, unlike her Hiccup actually put some effort in his wrapping she just shoved it in a box or bag.
She pulled it off, revealing a watch box, the picture printed on the front looked very much like the watch Hiccup was wearing right now, " it's one of them fitness watches, I noticed you liked mine and you are always running and it helps to like track how long you've run for and all that stuff ... if you don't like it-" she realised she must have been too quiet for too long as he seemed to start to ramble and he only did that when he was nervous, she made him nervous. She'd figured that out before she'd first kissed him, the way she walked, talked, they way she looked at him with those big blue eyes. She made him very nervous.
But he wasn't complaining.
She jumped into his arms, wrapping herself around his body and giving him a squeeze before he could doubt himself anymore. " I love it!"
Releasing her grip only a tad to look him full in the face, " I love it so much, thank you" and thanking him the only way she knew, she kissed him, lingering slightly to gain his full attention. So when she pulled away, he followed her, wrapping his arms back around her waist and making it unable for her to escape.
" well I'm glad, but you should know I didn't turn up just to be punched at, and give you a present" he was expecting a slap but she decided not to since he did get her a lovely gift.
" oh go on, why are you here?" She was thinking about making a dig about how he wasn't here to just see her, but he was already on edge and she thought best to give him a rest, that said she was in a good mood.
" came to ask you out on a date?"
His goofy smile could make her giggle, but she yet saw the point of a date, they'd been on dates before, but as the summer came to an end the two rather spend time with each other than going out for meals. However she liked that, loved it even. But that didn't mean that she didn't get butterflies when he mentioned going for a date. It would be nice for a change, but then there was the question on where to go when they were supposed to keep themselves to themselves.
" and where Mr Haddock would you be taking me on the date? May I ask?" She played on it, edging closer and messing with hairs at the back of his neck. He would surprise her sometimes, with the romantic gestures he pulls out for her, that said she wasn't one for romance, not till Hiccup came, he was her one exception.
" the place we had her first official date" remembering it like it was only yesterday, the two knew this restaurant very well. Beautiful but not to cuisine, and had a lovely view of the ocean, but the only problem was that it was well known and very popular. So how the two were gonna sneak in, have a meal and the sneak out without anyone noticing them, she had no clue.
" not that I'm being ungrateful but how do you plan on getting us in and out without being seen, we are still keeping us a secret remember" he smirked at her worried face, not that he liked it when she worried, but he was the one worrying and she was the one laid back.
" let me handle that, and you just turn up." He kissed the top of her sweaty head, and she wouldn't mind, but she was sweaty. Not that he cared, it was Astrid after all.
So she sighed and nodded in agreement but still wanted to question his decision, " fine, what time do you want me to show up?" But decided not too, it wasn't her place to judge him, not yet anyway.
" I'll text you with the details of day and time, but don't worry too much about it okay" as he kissed her cheek she got the feeling he was gonna walk off. He may think he can get away with somethings, but Astrid was still top dog, and even though Hiccup might be the guy in this relationship but to hell if she wasn't gonna fight to wear the jeans in this relationship. So she pulled an 'Astrid move', thats what Hiccup called it, something that caught him off guard but all in all he didn't mind. He'd named it after a few times she did a punch and kiss, it was her way of getting him back but also getting a little some herself. Not that he complained, even if he'd have to suffer her right fist, he was getting a something sweet at the end.
He went to leave by walking past her, no way was she gonna let him slip away, she was a girl, she had needs of course. So she turned back around and grabbed his arm, pulling him back till his body crashed back into hers, he had no time to think, she'd wrapped her arms back around his neck and literally flung herself at him, kissing his lips full in motion and of course he wasn't going to stop her. His arm wrapped around her back so he held her close, and the other found her cheek, rubbing her skin with his thumb.
She was like electricity with him, he'd never been with anyone like her, that challenged him, made his head spin, but also secured him with how she feels about him. She drove him insane when they weren't together, but drove him absolutely mad when they were. She was like fire, bringing the spark back in him, making him feel nervous again, excited again, happy again.
As she pulled back and his lips stung from her pulling away, she could hear his protesting moan before she even opened her eyes, but when she did she could see she had him exactly where she wanted him.
" you didn't think I'd let you walk away without a proper kiss did you?" Her smirk was invited, his eyes couldn't leave her lips and as he went to kiss her again, she could see the desire in his eyes, and she knew she had him in her grasp. " ah ah ah! " she placed a finger over his lips pushing them back away from hers. " you've had your fair share today Mr Haddock, you'll have to earn your next one"
It was her turn to walk away, it might take time but she was gonna teach Hiccup she was in charge. He wouldn't have it any other way of course.
He watched her walk away, she was magnificent, beautiful and as she turned back to smile, he realised how lucky he was to have her. He couldn't follow her, she'd ran off in the direction of her changing rooms with her watch still in her hand. He used to watch her run back in summer when she was still training or doing it for fun, it was no secret that his girlfriend was competitive. He'd learned that on the day he met her, he'd found out so much about her that day, and it only made him want to learn more...
( 4 months ago, end of May 2020)
" yes Ruff everything is sorted you don't have to worry, just you and Tuff be there for your family and I'll sort out our apartment, okay love you, wish your family all the best from me"
Astrid locked her door and hung up the phone. She was in charge of all the legal documents for their new apartment they'd just bought. She turned to the lift and pressed the button to go down, she promised her friend that she'd take care of everything while she dealt with the loss of her beloved grandmother. To be honest she felt sorry and grateful at the same time, she obviously felt sorry for her friend and how much pain she must be in now, but at the same time she felt grateful in a weird way that none of her grandparents were alive today so she could one day feel the grief of loosing someone that close, all her grand parents were dead before she was even born. But deep down, she really felt jealous, Ruff still had two grandparents left, and she had over 20 years worth of love and caring from her grandmother, where as Astrid never had that, never had that kinda love only a grandparent could give.
The lift open and she got inside, pressing the button that would take her to the ground floor. She was thinking about her last two years with Ruff, that starting off in first year halls together, moving into second year halls straight after and now just as their second year has come to a close, they just bought and moved into their third living place for their final year. Since Astrid had to work here in the city of Berk she stayed all year round, where as Ruff did go home once in a while, to see family and stuff, but she was a Berkian born and raised, Astrid was born on the main land, the only connection she had to Berk was her grandfather Hofferson was from here and his ancestors before that. So she stayed, their new apartment was beautiful, in a lovely high rise only 5-10 minutes away from the university, it was a little more expensive than the past two, but she had her loan and Ruff (sadly) just got money off her grandmother in her will.
But even though Astrid was getting money off her sponsor, she still worked shifts along side her intern job at a Photography studio, it was un paid but she need the experience. So she did cafe shifts once in a while and now summer was here she could do more and longer shifts. Like just below the new apartment she'd just moved in, was a brand new coffee house, she applied and got the job, at least she didn't have to get a bus whenever she needed to go work, it was literally on her doorstep.
The lift doors opened and she walked out, the only thing was that the cafe was a separate to the apartment building, meaning even though it was in the building it was a separate company, so she just had to walk out the apartments block front door and walk to the separate door that was the cafe. But still it was as close as she was gonna get, wasn't it.
So thats how her day started, walking into her new job wrapping her apron around her waist and placing her long blonde hair in a high ponytail and getting ready to do the lunch run. Today wasn't too bad, all she had was a 1-5 shift, which she found quite lucky for her 2nd week into the job. It was just supposed to be a calm quiet day, that was she wasn't expecting the tall auburn customer who always ordered an almond latte to catch her eye. That said she caught his eye first, otherwise why was he always asking her to bring him 7 cups of coffee in the past hour and a half.
" Wow thats your 8th coffee since I got here, not that I'm complaining, more orders I have the more commission I get. I'm just worried that you're gonna die from over simulated heart failure." Those bright green eyes looked up at her and he tore them from his laptop, she'd just placed his coffee down, but he was too busy laughing at her that looking at his drink.
" Well what can I say, I like coffee" that smirk was hiding something more, like she had a sense that it was something else, so she played on it, seeing if it would play out right.
" Oh really, so it's just for the love of coffee?" The side of his mouth twitched, he couldn't keep the smile hidden for long, before she knew it the handsome stranger was grinning from ear to ear.
" Well there is something else but I'm afraid if I say it you'll hit me" that was true, he'd already guessed she was a little aggressive. However she was just happy her initial thought was right, he fancied her, and she was definitely not mad about that. " so i'll just start with something simple, my names Hiccup"
His hand was presented in front of her, as he offered his hand to be shaken, she obviously check for a ring as it was his left hand, and so far so good, so she shook it and tried her best not to mock his name, and tried wasn't really the right word, it just slipped out basically, " wow your parents must have really hated you"
It came out so quick she hadn't realised, and suddenly felt so stupid and blown her shot, until se heard him laugh, chuckle more like, he slipped his hand out of hers, but still kept his eyes on her with a very goofy smile on his face.
" I am so sorry, I shouldn't have said that, I don't know what I was thinking-" even though his smile and laughter put her nerves at ease, she still felt like such an embarrassment.
" No it fine, believe me I've been asking myself for years why a parent would give their child such an awful name, a name that was at the buttvof everyones jokes, but I've just had to get used to it." There was something by the way he said it that made that whole guilt just shift off. But that was nothing about the way she made him feel, he was captivated by her, her smile, her eyes, her personality, he knew she didn't mean what she said, but he found it funny anyway, cause she gorgeous and beautiful, and literally anything she could have said would have put a smile on his face.
" Still I shouldn't have said what I said, I was way out of line and if my boss found out, I'd be in shit" she shifted in her place, her hint was so obvious, but that was her just checking if he was going to complain about her.
" Well don't worry, I won't be the one to drop you in it," his smile was warm, reassuring, something bout it made her feel like she could be open and honest with him, she didn't like that she felt that way, but also in a way she did like it, she hadn't felt like that in a long while.
" Thank you"
" But maybe there is something you could do for me" her head told her not to trust a comment like that, but her heart was intrigued what he had to say, and trusted he was a good soul.
" What?" Against her better judgment she asked.
" Tell me more about yourself, let's start with your name?"
xx
After that the conversation just flowed, all day he stayed in the cafe asking her questions while she worked. She made little comments about how it couldn't be fun for him watching her clean floors and dish out coffee. Wasn't exactly entertaining. He disagreed.
Five o'clock rolled on quicker than she thought, talking to Hiccup was becoming like second nature, like it was so easy to just talk about anything. And of course he had offered to walk her home, not that he knew she lived a few floors above, but she accepted his offer, what kind of woman would she be if she didn't. He opened the door for her and followed her out, she didn't know how long it would take for him to realise the door to her apartment block was literally around the corner. But she was humouring him.
" So, where is it you live? If you don't mine me asking?" They turned the corner and the door was getting closer with each step, stopping by the entrance she pointed up, did take him long to understand what she was saying.
" Oh, not far at all" he had to give it to her, he was thinking he might have to catch 3 busses out of the city just to get her home, but he didn't mind, he would have liked to spend the time with her. At least now his car wasn't too far away.
" I would ask you up, but my better judgment is telling me to draw a line right here" if he was the person she was thinking he was, mysterious maybe, handsome and gorgeous defiantly, but also sweet, kind, and respectful, he'd respect her decision.
" Very wise miss Hofferson, I wasn't expecting an invitation, nor would I have excepted one even if you ask. Cause yes you are drop dead gorgeous but I need more time to get to know someone, more than a few hours anyway" his answer was perfect to say the least, he was just perfect to say the least. She could tell just by looking at the way his feet shifted he was as nervous as she was, made him even more attractive than she first thought he was. " however I would like to get to know you more, say over coffee? One where you are not serving it" the two giggled, he was probably more nervous than she was, especially when he would scratch the back of his neck.
" What like on a date?" She questioned what he meant, wanting him to actually say it himself, or testing the waters on whether he wanted a date or just a quick fling sorta thing.
" Oh no, I wouldn't want our first date to be coffee, it will be some place a lot more fancier," it was then that her heart skipped a beat, he was a confusing man, but that just made her more intrigued in him. " that is if you'd like to go on a date with me, miss Hofferson" they way he said her name like that, it set her skin aflame.
She knew by saying yes she'd be admitting to liking him, but maybe she didn't mind that. " yeah I wouldn't mind" of course she kept some of her dignity and didn't swoon over him like he probably wanted. But that didn't stop him from wooing her.
" so you gonna give me your phone number or am I gonna have to beg for it?" She smirked when he thought he might have to beg, but she wasn't gonna leave him hanging.
" we wouldn't want that now would me" casually pulling out her phone from her back pocket, she watched him do the same, less casual and more eager.
She was intrigued to learn more about this mysterious Hiccup.
