Chapter 17: Prison break part 1: Life Inside the Cathedral

Eda and lilith were being led to the testing room of the comformitorium. The room was formerly a torture chamber back when this place was a prison.
Eda mumbled to herself rubbing her sore wrist.
"are you okay edalyn?" Lilith asked leaning her head to whisper to her sister.
"i'm fine, just a little sore. When I get my hands on that witch, I'll make her choke on that ruler."
"you shouldn't attempt to make her angry. We're here for a reason, remember?"
"shut up back there." The guard leading the girls said over his shoulder.
The two witches came upon a room and were seated in front of a woman in the white and blue robes of this church with a note pad and looking at the women.
"alright ladies, we are here to see how far we need to work to make you perfect for lord luca. Now what will ensue is a series of tests that will allow us to determine your value."
"Ugh tests, It's like I'm back in hexside." eda groaned.
"quiet!" the priestess yelled. "the first test is grace."
The witch used a spell circle to summon three huge tomes. "now you're goal is to walk two feet while balancing these books on your head. You first mouthy."
Eda rose and let the witch put the tomes on her head. Eda took a couple steps and did fine but immediately tripped when she got cocky and they fell.
The woman clicked her tongue and shook her head. "next you quiet one."
lilith rose and allowed the books to be placed on her head. The witch did the excerise masterfully as she started walking from one end of the room to the other.
The woman clapped her hands and smiled. "very well done! Let's see how you do in the next test."
The woman then summons an illusion of a baby and pitches it's cheeks as it starts crying. "it stands to reason that one of your duties as a companion of the lord is to bear his children and rear the children of yourself and your love sisters. So you're goal is to sooth this crying child."
"Oh no." Eda said.
"Mouthy you're up." the woman commanded making the child float to her.
Eda held it and rocked the baby as she tried to suppress disgust. She wasn't a mothering type but she tried her best but it still cried.
The woman groaned and just pressed the bridge of her nose. "they send me such inept woman and expect me to make them perfect wives for our lord. You next quiet one."
the baby floated to lilith who began rocking the baby more carefully. Something about this just felt right as she sung a little melody to the baby. The illusion began to calm and hold it's hand out to grab for lilith's hair which brought a smile to her face.
"I'm impressed quiet one… what is your name?"
"Lilith ma'am."
"a very pretty name… perfect for a potential wife of luca."
"Now girls, I want you to hop on one foot." she ordered.
"what why?"
"it is part of the test of obedeince." the woman explaine dglaring at eda.
Lilith did so perfectly but eda struggled falling flat in her face.
"Now get on all fours and bark like a hound."
Eda glared at her and turned her head sitting back down.
Lilith on the other hand got on her hands and knees then barked like dog.
The woman glared at eda and then just marked more stuff on her board.
The woman then laid her hand out like a young lady introducing herself at a party. "kiss the back of my hand."
Lilith did as she was told not rising from her spot.
"Now beg for a treat like an obeident hound." the woman instructed.
Lilith did so raising her hands like paws and giving big eyes that no one could say no to.
"great work as always lilith. As for you mouthy I have to say I am very disappointed."
"Bite me," Eda said.
The woman gasped and covered her mouth. "one as vulgar as her has no chance with lord luca but I have to adminster the last test… three important things that a love sister of lord luca must accomplish is entertainment, home making, and child rearing. We have already tested the latter now we shall test the former."
a montage of lilith and eda cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, and other home making activities which were mentally draining.
Eda did better then most of the other tasks but still had nothing on lilith as she just blew it out of the park.
The witches were also run talents on their singing, their message work, and their ability to be funny.
Eda only excelled at two out of three of the things where as lilith did her usual excellence.
"great work lilith, I see a bright future as one of lord luca's wifes for you."
"Thank you, love sister." Lilith said smiling.
Eda mimicked lilith and using her hand to mock her.
"now it is almost time for supper so for the next half hour you will be waiting in the dining room to write love letters for lord luca and after being appraised by the priestess in charge if it is pleasing then you'll receive your dinner."
the two witches were once again lead to the dining room where a bunch of women were seated around long benches as they sat down at the table writing letters.
Lilith went right to work on the letter. She had been doing this for awhile so it wasn't hard to write her feelings for lord luca and she was done in record time.
Meanwhile eda just sat idle. She tried striking up a conversation with one of the girls but she ignored her. Eda blew her hair out of her eyes and just crossed her arms tapping her foot. Trying to pass time.
"edalyn? Aren't you going to write a letter?"
"No, why would I? We're breaking these girls out anyway. Why are you so in this? Wait a minute, are you trying to make sure you're a proper girlfriend material for luca… you love sick school girl."
"Edalyn hush, I made you a letter. We need to blend in."
"well keep it. I don't want it." eda pushed the paper away from her.
"take it," lilith pushed her letter to eda.
"no!"
"darn it edalyn let me help you!" lilith screamed which drew the attention of the guards. They walked up to her and grabbed the letters.
"cheaters!" both of them grabbed eda and lilith separating them.
The priestess came to the two witches and clicked her tongue. "so this si the disobedient witch who failed all the entrance tests so spectalucularly. I think after this display you are a prime candidate for the comformity room. Take her away."
"edalyn!" Lilith yelled as eda was taken away struggling.
"as for you, I am very disappointed. You passed the test with flying colors and would risk your position for one so unremarkable. The high priestess will decide a proper punishment for you. Take her to the high priestess."
Lilith was escorted to the high priestesses office and lead up the stairs. Once there she was set down with two guards flanking her.
The priestess tapped her thumbs together and shook her head at lilith. "you have so much potential."
she rises from her seat and walks behind lilith "you're beautiful, kind, obedient, and very talented… you may even be first wife material for Lord luca if he returns. So the question is… why would you throw it all out by jeopardizing yourself for an unruly love sister."
Lilith started snorting with fake tears in your eyes. "well you see love mother, snort, that woman I helped was my baby sister… I just didn't want her to be punished… I'm sorry." lilith covered her face proud that she took a page out of edalyn's book.
The priestess patted her back and lifted lilith's chin to meet her eyes. "it's okay, lord luca values familial bonds in the love sisters… as long as they don't exceed his own when it comes to priority." the priestess's smile was reassuring.
"thank you love mother."
"anytime love sister lilith. But I am afraid you still must be punished. Please stick out your wrist."
Lilith did as she commanded and closed her eyes.
The witch slapped lilith's wrist ten times with a ruler leaving a few scratched but not nearly as bad as when edalyn got hit.
Lilith winced only a couple times but when it was done a couple real tears left her eyes.
The woman held Lilith's face and kissed he forehead. "you took your punishment well and it is for that along with all your achievement during your tests that I promote you to the angels choir.
"thank you love mother." lilith said through her tears.
"you've earned it, love sister."
meanwhile luca is being lead by a lesser priestess through the facility as he watched with horror at this temple devoted to him. Shaking his head in disgust, he follows the priestess.
The priestess however was talking about the various doctrine of this faith with an uneasing pride.
"and here we have the mess hall where the love sisters eat assuming they write good enough letters to lord luca."
"Letters?"
"Yes, love letters. If the love letter is well written then we give them their meal and allow them to read our religious texts."
"what happens if they aren't."
"then they go hungry and have to spend the duration of dinner and their free time studying lord luca and taking tests."
Luca gulped these people are so brutal. Okay, calm down. You just need to find luz and then you can escape and find a way to free these poor girls.
"now we shall take you to the altar and teach you all thirty seven loyal prayers to luca and then we can start the angelic choir's practice.
Luca nodded and followed the priestess.
The human boy had finished his prayers and after memorizing them all the priestess was satisfied. He was lead to a room kinda like the main area of a church. He was seated in the front pews.
"bring out the angels!" the priestess called. Clapping her hands commandingly.
At her order the a group of woman in white and blue robes walk in rows of two toward the choir area. They stand at their spot in a silent obedience.
Luca look each of them over. A lot of them were dead eyed like automatons and wore a thin fake smile. The rest looked frightened as the entire choir was stiff as a board. Luca recognized one fo these angels as lilith and noticed that her wrist was scarred.
"what's wrong with those woman?" Luca asked, pointing to the dead eyed girls.
The priestess clicked her tongue and shook her head. "It is shameful to say but some woman are too hard headed to be properly molded into lovers of lord luca with normal methods so we have to send them to the conformity room. It is a terrible fate but if it means luca has a loyal companion then…. Sacrifices need to be made."
the cold efficiency that the woman said that statement filled luca with dred. His eyes met lilith and he felt nothing but true fear for her.
"Now start the first hymn… love of a lord… go." she commanded and the angels started singing much to the horror of luca.
Meanwhile eda clawthorne is being led in cuffs as she is taken to the comformity roon. She recgonized this place as formerly being where the deep cells where. She was placed her when the emperor captured her for petrification and now she has returned.
The rooms had changed but the purpose was still the same. The witch looked at dsigust as girls strapped to chairs had to watch a video on loop on the display.
Eda shook her head then she saw a familiar girl from the wanted posters. Boscha was her name but now she had cold souless eyes and thin smile. A priestess in front of her had a clipboard and a pen.
"do you accept lord luca as your one and only?"
"I do love sister." her tone mechanical and lifeless.
"would you do anything for lord luca?"
"Yes love sister, luca is my lord and I am his humble servant."
"if it came to it when you die for lord luca?"
"yes love sister, if luca commanded it I'd cut my own throat."
"ugh, you guys are monsters." Eda responded, turning her head.
"Best get used to the sight witch." the guard said taking her arm.
"yeah, you're gonna be just like her in a moment." his friend chuckled.
Just then one of the priestesses were having a conversation amongst each other and eda overheard it.
"I don't get it, she's been in there for a week straight and still hasn't broken." one said.
Her friend shook her head and looked at her clipboard. "give her another week and if that fails then we'll get esdeath. Who would think this girl would be trouble. Go check on her again."
"Not me love sister, she freaks me out. I swear she is talking to something."
"there's nothing in that cell beside her… go!"
that sounds like luz, welp it's show time! "abracadabra!" eda excliamed. "this is the last time I let luca decide the command word." eda's cuffs came off and she used her spells circles to slam the guards agianst the wall and the priestesses in response raised the alarms.
why can a jail break never be easy?
